Good morning.

Bear .... Intersting about ANZAC Day. Hope you enjoyed the tradional rum. Thanks for the biscuits.

YGW ... Thanks for the b'day greetings for Shelley. No need to apolgize about the '68 Ford photo. Hope your new house is a great one ofr you. Is your new layout completed yet? LOL

Gary Weighmaster .... Sounds like you had a nice car back then. I had a '62 Chevy Impala convertible in the '60's.

Galaxy did not reply to my PM a couple of days ago, and I still assume he is without the internet.

Last night we went with neighbors to Patti's Retaurant in Grand Rivers, KY. We celebrated 3 b'days including Shelley's. Also, my good model railroad friend, Gus, has his brithday today. The other birthday was the wife of another model rairlaod friend here at the lake, Dan.

Later today, another model railroad friend will be visiting from Iowa. Hopefully, Mr. Murphy is absent.

Another cold morning, low 40s.  Nighttime temperatures are very close to freezing, and when I look at the weather radar there's snow not too far away.  What's wrong with this picture?

Happy ANZAC Day to our friends on the other side of the globe.  While our own Memorial Day holiday marks a somber occasion, it is, after all, still a holiday, and we typically treat it as the unofficial first day of summer, with cookouts and the opening of swimming pools.  Since most holidays really go back to pagan roots anyway, it seems more appropriate to lift one's spirits while lifting a chilled mug or two.

Good Morning

Whereupon we see clouds, a bit of sun and more wind...and a high of 50F

Going to see a few more people show up for another OP session, and see Spring schmooze some of them, lol.

So far the OP sessions had no incidents, accidents, no show turnouts, burnouts, meltdowns, or other disasterous terms...

Early start this morning as her-in-doors and myself attended the Dawn parade for ANZAC Day, Australia’s and New Zealand’s remembrance day for our fallen military. This year had a special significance as it marked 100 years since the landing by ANZAC troops at Gallipoli and the turnout was at least twice as many as last year, lots of young families with grand or great grandparent’s medals. It was a beautiful clear morning, the Southern Cross high in the sky, the steam from the hot pools drifting over, and then the sun rising over the hills, and reflecting off the calm lake.
So as it is part of ANZAC Day tradition, Chloe would you please administer a tot of Navy Rum to all who would like to join me in toasting those who served.
YGW. A stoat is a type of weasel.
While not in the building trade I’d say that most of the roofs are either of “corrugated iron” or pressed steel tiles, with a smattering of the concrete tiles, there are two such. roofed houses next door to me. I was surprised to see that US asphalt shingles are apparently available. If I were to replace or plan a new roof I’d personally use long run corrugated Coloursteel. You asked a while back how was New Zealand affected by WW2 and I only got round to giving you Part 1 of my answer. I have recently remembered this documentary which though it also includes Australia, explains things a lot better than I could. It has been uploaded in parts.

Well playing with my Thomas and friends today didn't pan out so well. I had track all over the living room in different directions with only two switch tracks. Which I had to get up and sit down a lot if anything happened. In which case it did, with Gordon and his three express coaches.

After a lot of derailing I decided to call it quits. I couldn't watch them neither because the stuff was blocking the view.

I had two other HO Scale layouts (ATSF, UP) but Thomas has lasted longer, but I still enjoy them when I have the urged.

Nothing makes me happier than playing with N Scale.

Work Front Even on my day off I have to deal with it. Idiot Dave (X Manager) is off vactaion as of today and should have been at are St Charles store today at 10:00 AM. Ken - sounds like the manufactures have gotten greedy.

YGW Not the fault of the manufactures but the U.S. public and the economy! In the 30's, 40's, 50 and 60 quailty is what consumers where looking for. Now it is prices, the lower the better! With you being in construction do you think a house built in 1920 is better built than in 2015? Now I'am not talking about insulation or technically but is skill and quality of material's?

 Later, Ken

Ah, the 68 Galaxie.  My FIRST brand new car, except mine was more of a gold color (my boss called it "cat scoures brown").  That's a fastback XL model by the way, distinguished by the cast aluminum grille, vacuum operated headlight covers.

Cambus - You must have been really ill for the Hosp. to keep you a week. Me deceased wife had an organ removed ( Gall bladder) and they tried to send her home the same day ! She was so ill that I stood in the way and told them in no uncertain terms she was staying. Glad you are out and better ! Sounds exciting about the new train digs !

Garry - My apologies on two fronts. Please forgive me for forgetting to wish your bride Happy Birthday also and you were ( of course ) right on the car. I stand corrected.

Ken - sounds like the manufactures have gotten greedy. Also possible the contracts protecting an area has expired and teh mattress manufatures have decided not to renew. You are in a bad position if that is the case.

JaBear - Stoats what is that ? Is the photo in your post your home ? Are all of teh roofs there metal ? Here in this area we use "Asphalt shingles which are impreganted with "gravel" ?

UP831 - Chartreuse ? Dont think I know that fellow is he french ? Whistling Public responsibility ? Oh I can just see it know " Mrs. Polka Dot, do you know why we pulled you over ? Your dots were sashaying in Chartreuse and causing eye malfunctions !" Please come with me we have to take you down town to the fashion police station. Laugh

Mr. B - You may appreciate this. A few years ago I was laid off. During that period at night I used to dream about being back in construction. I would smell the smells, hear the noise, compressors , generators, heavy equipments etc... that sounded like a beautiful symphony to me !

Howmus - IF YOU DO  go mow in the snow I want a picture of THAT ! Oh my gosh that would be insanely funny !!!

Brake - It would be really neat if you were to add a real light in there vs. just a fake one.

Went to the mailbox yesterday and guess what I recieved ? My NMRA magazine AND my new NMRA shirt - oh happy day ! Now this eveing when I am relaxing I can wear my new favorite shirt and read the new magazine. What a glorious afternoon its gonna be. Just eight more days until we settle Big Smile

It's been 8 months since I played with Thomas, Gordon and Percy. (Bachmann HO, just in case you were thinking G.)

I do have HO track, I don't really play with my friends to much, but I would like to buy some more. I'm going to see if I make some room to play with them within an hour or so, but before I begin I need to get out track that's in the garage and make some room in the living room to exactly begin playing.

Last day of doctor-prescribed vocal rest. Voice is not what it once was, but it is not done healing. There is still a little discomfort when I swallow, but again, it is still healing. I have external bruises that are still tender so I have to remind myself the internal bruising is likewise still tender.

Mornin' everybody!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Natur's Path Smart Bran with skim milk and a large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dartk Raost coffee for my R&GV RR mug please...

Outside, when I first turned on the computer a couple hours ago, some really bright thing was lighting up the area!!!  I thought Whoooooa!  Sunshine!  Didn't last... 10 minutes later I couldn't see the house across the street due to something called a "Flurry"...  Right now the white stuff is moving sideways toward the South.  Currently 34°F outside (will get out the winter coat again) with a predicted possible high of 47°F later today.  Sigh

I have to be at the local Boys and Girls Club for the MLK Interviews by 2:30 today.  We only have 5 candidates this year.  All of them should get a scholarship from us as they are all excellent students and kids.  Doing a lot of good things in the community and making good choices for themselves.

Have about 3 days worth of stuff to get done today so I better get at it.  Wonder if I should be the first person on the block to mow my lawn?  Wonder what the neighbors would think to have me out mowing in the snowstorm.....

Another day, another loud compressor outside.  We're having the house power-washed in preparation for painting.  I'm going to go to the bagel shop to get away from the noise.

Ken, every time I think about mattresses I think about the episode of Star Trek when Captain Picard and Data spend the night aboard a Klingon vessel.  Klingons, apparantly, sleep on a bed of solid granite, like a kitchen counter top.  My wife likes one of those.  She sleeps on her back, while I sleep on my side and I'm very uncomfortable on those "firm" granite models.  I've been known to pull the cushions off the couch and make a bed from them in hotels with Marquis de Sade mattresses.

Galaxy?  We are getting more concerned with each passing day.

Good morning. Woke up to frost on the ground this morning.  It was very cool in SE Ohio yesterday.

Second foundation water proofing contractor stopped yesterday.  He wanted to sell an inside basement system in the worst way.  Told him I had no interest whatsoever as it would not take care of the basic problem of water seeping through the block and leaching out the portland cement over time.  He understood where I was coming from and said that they have done exactly what I am looking for and would quote exterior waterproofing and drainage.  Don't know whether I can afford the fix.

On the railroad front, nailing down another stock rail for the second turnout in a wye and laying ties for the wye curve.  May need to stain more ties to finish the curve.

Ken, your Serta comment struck a nerve as we have a very good friend who is doing battle with Serta over a failed two year old mattress.  I can understand your frustration as mattress stores seem to pop up around here all the time.

Ulrich, the steam HOn3 loco is pretty amazing.  Pretty good pulling power considering the very small size and only four driver wheels.

Blown Cylinder, your snow probably explains why it has been so cold here in SE Ohio.

John Boy, hope your part of the world stays a little drier this spring versus the last couple of years.

Hope everyone has a good weekend.  Time for some rice crispies and toast.

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual, please.

Day four and still no Galaxy.  Maybe he's in Perris, CA!

Ken:  you sound like me when it comes to talking about interior design.  Sometimes it's good to do a little soap box.  Gets that cardio-vascular workout going.

YGW:  only if the stripes and polka dots are directly adjacent to periwinkle and chartreuse plaids. Big Smile   It's actually more involved than that.  It's about licensing and public responsibility.  Some are in favor, some are against.

Well, I didn't look up a good quote so....

I'm ready, ready as anybody can be, I'm ready for you, I hope you're ready for me. -Mickinley Morganfield

I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Good evening Zoe, a hot chocolate and an Anzac biscuit please.
Good Grief Frank, bringing heavy artillery to a Bear Hunt is dashed unsporting of you!!
YGW, well they do say don’t come between a mother and her cubs, I guess your late wife was like mine, very protective of the kids. Actually New Zealands only native land mammals are 3 species of small bats; rats, weasels and stoats were introduced unfortunately, so my only experience of large predatory animals has been at the zoo or TV wildlife documentaries. That said a friend of mine while living in Canada did come between a mother black bear and her cubs and had to beat a very hasty retreat!
Particularly enjoyed the Dutch/ Welsh layout clip Ulrich, just shows how international model railroading is.
I was disappointed to see that Barry has got snow again, especially as Ray had mentioned the possibility of 80 F the other day. I had hoped you chaps were going to start getting some decent doses of Vitamin D, while not wishing to diminish the health and other issues of some of the diner’s patrons; it has been a rather dismal place over your winter and, in my opinion, needs to reflect more of Jeffreys positivity.
As this photo taken today from my deck shows the trees are certainly getting their autumnal colouring, and while, apart from a cold snap last week, it is still shirt and shorts weather during the day, 66 F today, more sun and light must be coming your way.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.
Cheers, the Bear.Smile

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Brew Please Beer

Sir Madog
Ken - even if the job sucks (at least from time to time), at the age of 59 (which I am turning in August) there is only a slim chance of finding a new and better one. So hang in there, bear it an grin!

Ulrich My Friend Problem is I like the job, it's the paychecks that sucke caboose! Smile, Wink & Grin Worst part is I never can plain out a budget. One month I may make as little as $1800.00 gross and next might be $3000.00 (Far and few in between I will add) Take today as example, had another good spiff sale, right around $165.00 in spiff. So in two days I made a extra $550.00. Then I will have a week I only make a extra $20.00?

When I first got into this line of work and polished my presentation and learned more about health and sleep it was not uncommon for me to make $200.00 plus each day. But that was in 2007 and the econmy is not at healthy as then. Plus the market is being flooded by Cheap Mattress! Serta makes junk till you spend $1000.00 or more on a queen set. It is easy to make a cheap mattress feel good, for a year too 3 years. After that it is time for a new one. A well made cheap mattress, well feels cheap but it will keep that feel for 5 to 8 years.

Other thing that hurts is it seems that everyone is selling mattress? Heck, places that are know for selling just cheap junk (Weekend Only, Big Lot's, Vaule City) are selling them. Even hardware stores are selling mattress here in the U.S. Yet, none of the people at theses store are trained in how a mattress works and what a customer turly needs! If they want a hard mattress, it is over there, soft mattress over there!

They are not trained to ask what kind of sleep problems a person is having or if there are back problems. A HARD MATTRESS IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS A OLD WIFETALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus in this bussines support does not mean firm or hard. If the mattress is firm you contour to the mattress. When you sink into the mattress contour to you and gives you better support!

OK,  I am off my SoapBox

Ulrich, JohnBoy, etc .... Thanks. I'll pass the greatings to my Main Squeeze.

YGW...  Google: "1968 Ford Galaxy images".

We just got back. I took Shelley out to eat in Paducah. Then she wanted to go shopping. Believe it or not; her choice for shopping was home improvement stores. We went to Lowes and Home Depot. Why? Because she wanted to go to the garden center. Now we have flower plants for her garden. I suspect a Honey Do project is about to take oplace.

Afternoon just a coke for me. Sorry I haven't been here for sometime but the health problems reared up again so again was hospitalised for a couple of weeks. When I came out my wife said that we were moving to another flat near her daughter (my stepdaughter) at first was not overly impressed until I saw that there was a 13x10 ft shed at the end of the garden. Had a look at it nice and water tight floored and level you can have it for your model railroad she said!!! Can't wait to move at last somewhere to built my railroad empire. Best wishes to all!!!!!

Whistling

Morning Gang,

Chloe, when you get a moment, I would like a double order of scrambled eggs on rye toast and a H.C. to chase.  Thanks much.......

Well, we got back from Montana last evening about 8:30. It is about an 8 hour drive with pet stops etc.  along the way.  We had a great 5 days there with our youngest Son.  Toured Yellowstone again on Saturday. It was the first week-end of the year it was open. Saw lots of wildlife (no Lions though). Then helped my Son build a two barrel rain barrel set up. One above the other. horizontally.   It turned out great. Barrels came from a car wash and they had held soap,so we cleaned them well and they are white in color which is nice.

Picked up a Micro-Mark order that I had sent there (save postage) and of cource a visit to Jim's Junction to load up on odds and ends and then found some really neat farm machinery and construction vehicles at a Tractor Supply Store that will work fine for HO.  I had hoped to get a couple more Blue point Turnout controllers, But John was out of them so will order from here.

I also found a really neat tricycle at Tractor supply for my Grandson.  It is  a very heavy duty one with inflatable tires like on a big wheel barrow, and a heavy steel frame, comfortable seat and a bell.  He will think it is like a Monster Truck. He is too little right now, but will save it for his forth birthday next spring.  If I was to buy it up here I would expect to pay up to $150.00 for it, but got it there for $69.00.

Glad Ulrich is feeling somewhat better, hope that continues to progress.

I too, am concerned about Galaxy, hope all is well there in N.Y.

Garry,  Give Shelley an extra squeeze and whisper in her ear that John wishes her a very Happy Birthday as well.

Mr. B., that much overtime for a fella your age is like the Blackhawks playing until 1:00am the other night.  Sure glad you are having fun with that.

YGW.  Good luck with the move.

Anyone heard from Cape Jim or Jerry, lately??

Ken, Nice spiff on one sale.  Glad the trains are on time and running well. Don't invite any visitors over.  Mine all run great until I have a visitor.  The California Zephyr was running great and with my last visitor, after ten minutes of running fine the second last car derailed on a turnout and I could not determine a reason for that until the second day and I decided to clean the wheels on that car. They didn't look very dirty and not alot came off them, but it has ran fine ever since.  I think I will get around (soon) to cleaning all the wheels on that train.

Will check back later, but must go and get ready for a hair cut at noon and a trip to the Cancer Clinic at 2:20 this afternoon.  I go back to work part time on the 5th of May. So that is a week short of two months off this time. Last year it was six months medical leave. Having thoughts about retiring for good this fall, will see how that shakes out.

Later Gators,

Johnboy out...................to get spiffed up

Mornin'.........

Zoe, more Marrakesh Express Dark Roast coffee please.  A lot more. please!

I'm sitting here at my iMac watching the white crap fall out of the sky.  Unlike the guy to the North West of me up North of the Border Barry, that white crap isn't sticking but it is falling out of the sky.  Think I should take a break and go mow the lawn???  The contractor isn't here today yet, probably due to the crapstorm...

Since Galaxy is no where to be found, I will post a couple more life changing quotes from that famous writer and composer Anonymous:

Good morning, all.  I'm hoping for a Galaxy sighting, too.

It will only get up to 50 degrees here in New England for the next couple of days.  I'd really like to get out for a bicycle ride, but that's too cold for me.  I think I'll just take a walk instead.  I'll put on some boots and take a rail trail walk.  The Bedford and Billerica RR ran for less than a year (1877-8) but later became part of the Boston & Lowell and then the Boston & Maine.  It was finally abandoned in 1962.  The right-of-way is a dirt and gravel path now, and it provides a nice mountain bike path from the road a quarter of a mile from my house to the popular Minuteman Bikeway which runs into the city.

Well, it's not my wife's birthday, so I didn't do anything like that.  I can pretty much quote that particular rant from memory anyway.

A very big, smiling Happy B-Day to Shelley!

Good Afternoon!

Deep down in my memory I remember Galaxy saying something about him expecting to have computer problems coming up.  I hope it is just this which keeps him from joining us (and greeting the day with a new poem each time).

Ken - even if the job sucks (at least from time to time), at the age of 59 (which I am turning in August) there is only a slim chance of finding a new and better one. So hang in there, bear it an grin!

OzJim - good to see you back in here! Taking abreak from western civilisation? I could use that myself right now.

It took a little longer for the fog to clear today, but now it is bright and sunny again. From the inside it even looks nice and warm, but it isn´t. We have easterly winds blowing cold air down from Russia, preventing the sun to warm the land.

Ever seen a HOn30 live steam loco? Well here it is:

Wouldn´t it be nice to have one of those? It was built by the British modeler Brian Caton, who unfortunately does not run a business, so one cannot just order one. The one in the video is owned  by Gerd, a really talented model railroader, who also build big ride-on live steam engines.

Chloe, coffee and a handful of those chocolate chip cookies, please.

CUL!
