Evening guys
been busy working on things. I got my "freebie" module frame attached to some "freebie" 3/4" plywood. I say freebie because I found them both when going for walks. I sanded it down, now the fun part can begin. What do I put on it? It's an odd size, something like 42.5" by 29.75" (I had measured it, but forgot what it was) I was thinking of using what I have for track, having a double-track main parallel a stream and a road, with a branchline going off to the side and over the stream on the trestle I'm scratchbuilding. I kind of want to have the road between the stream and the tracks and have powerlines between the tracks and the road. Part of me is wondering if I could stick an N-scale layout on it.
I also finished my 20th thrall coal gondola. I wound up plucking the ladders off of one of my NP ones. As far as I can tell, NP never had a 50' thrall high-side gondola (normally used for coal) and the numbering MDC used was for woodchip hoppers (I've been saving a bunch of sawdust for loading it and my 3 BN ones and 1 GN one). So I have 21 Thrall 4000s (I got an athearn RTR one of the bay), 13 PS 4000s, and 16 3-bay hoppers (MDC). I'll eventually get some exactrail FMC 4000s for the mix to replace the MDC 3-bays (actual car, but I doubt they were used in unit train service like the PS/FMC/Thrall/etc. 4000s)
Garry, the only use of plywood I can recall by the BN was as grain doors in 40' boxcars on some branchlines; in the 80s. I suppose having a piece of plywood covering the bottom of the door opening was a lot cheaper then the metal ones.

Misterbeasley, Congrats to your daughter on graduating college. Although her situation with her BF sounds like the situations lots of girls my age get themselves into. I have a non-high-paying job, but have a degree. I just can't find anything as everyone wants 5-10 years experience.

We had a good trip from Home to Springfield (3 days, no pressure ) then went to Memphis for 3 days as we had not been there before. Took in all the Elvis stuff, Graceland etc. and several of their more famous BBQ joints, then back to Springfield as today was my Son's Convocation for his Masters in Psychology. Very impressive Ceremony and a great and funny Speaker. Steak BBQ tonight with C on C and sweet potato fries.
Doesn't look like I'll get to visit with Cape Jim or Garry and that is sad to me, I was hoping to work that in but now we have a week booked in Branson for all four of us.

Jeff, I can sympathize with you as one of the last things I did before leaving home was to have placed something on the layout that shouldn't have been there and knock an A-B set of orange (WP) FT-7s to the concrete along with about four freight cars. Lots of damage, sure hope it is all repairable. I really hate it when steps get broken off. I have not come up with a great way of replacing them to my satisfaction.
Well my Son is firing up the fire-pit, so I should go out there for a while, but will hit the hay soon as I have had to many late nights and early mornings this last week. This next week will be much more laid back.
Glad to hear Ulrich more upbeat and I hope he finds success in his new en devour.
There is some great work being done by you guys, by the way has anyone heard from Sue lately? Sure hope she and Larry are well.

I recall the Rock Island was even worse than C&NW regarding maintenace. They used bailing wire to hold together locomotive they "kitbashed" looking a bit like some of Jeff's creations. The Milwaukee Road was in similar condition. The last time I saw a MILW Erie Built FM passenger locomotive, it was hauling a commuter train, and part of its side panel was made of plywood instead of steel.

I got 3 packages in the mail today...
1} 2 Hawaiian shirts two kinds, but yet matching, one for MOH and one for me,
2} some other items of clothing I ordered and can't mention
3} A Bachmann EZ Command for MOH's N scale stuff..going DCC now.MOH sees the benefits form my HO scale use of the B EZC so wants one too....someone was kind enough to pass one on...
4} and one big bill to pay...for stuff ordered..in installments of course...
laundered the new clothes after trial fits, both MOH's and mine fit, good thing. I had to order one size up as my regular size came and lo, and behold, too small! will pass those onto train nut friend...he will enjoy them. will re-order for me.decided I will only order the cotton shirts now as the rayons are much "prettier", but also fraught with problems..the cotton ones are lightweight cotton and well made and won't have the problems the rayons do{coming apart}
Made a bunch of appts for MOH for next week..should make one for myself..my right shoulder is KILLING me.And the mouse doesn't help.
so dinner was turkey thighs will freeze leftovers to make "bird salad" as MOh calls it, or "Bird soup". MOH doens't like much bird, but loves Beef, so I said we have had a LTO of beef lately {been getting it at very nice discounts} so had it a LOT. Have to have my favorite in there somewhere..
well, soon for bed early morning for MOh tomorrow so early to bed.

Wednesday was a great day! Daughter called, #1 grandson was accepted into a prestigeous(sp) gifted and talented St. Paul school for next year.Pretty cool! Then, FB'd with PFC Son. He is in Kyrgistan. His flights out of sandbox were delayed. He leaves Kyrgistan monday early am and will be CONUS at Ft. Bliss that afternoon. Said he'd call when boots on the ground, or soon as possible.
VERY happy Dad here!

He'll work all summer here, then in the fall it's 2 years of post graduate work in China! Oh and yes,,,Dad will be getting a Bachmann QJ shipped home!
But tomorrow, I go to Pittsburg with 4 other friends for a run session on another layout! Hey,,,I gotta do what a train nuts gotta do!!

I dropped one of my F7 Frankenstein locos this morning. Busted the body into three pieces, knocked some drive parts out and broke a couple of solder joints! Put the drive back together and test ran it. Everything seems to work fine. The body however is beyond all hope. Looked on Ebay and found a used Athearn F7A body (UP) that'll make a suitable replacement after the Sundown shops have painted it into the L&A scheme. There goes $11 from the grocery fund. Oh well. It should be here Wednesday. I was going to put the Frankenstein F unit trio in service today but that'll have to wait unless I put on a Bachmann FT-A body.I got the large 'KEEP OFF!' labels cut out and put into an old pill bottle. That's what I keep my small model railroad parts in. Old pill bottles. Seems like a good use for them.In other news I spotted a brown recluse spider crawling across the top of my night stand. The TV users manual came in handy for once and the spider was no more than a greasy smear on the table top!

THAT Editor update: THAT has been in Jamaica for the past week or so. Whoever subbed in the paper putting together dept. laid-out two of the best danged sports pages I've seen in my almost five years on-staff. Maybe she'll take a hint and continue what they started. I get to meet Sliced Bread next week, THAT Editor called-off facetime for today, said she thought she had a conflict. I resisted the urge to say I've often thought she was conflicted... I'm sure I'm in for a little butt chewing, I used a source she doesn't like, for petty political reasons. But, the piece I quoted him in, his opinion was as valid as anybody else in the County, AND he even advocated for an idea by a guy on the opposite side of the poly-tick spectrum from himself. THAT oughta count for something. But, we shall see what we see when we see it.
Thanks again to all who complimented me on the CNW geep! GARRY, I think, commented on the rough track in a photo, THAT was in the ex-Rock Island "North Yard" in Cedar cRapids. CNW put the bucks into the East-West mainline, didn't worry so much about a yard THAT was primarily a staging area for local industries. IF my plans actually w**k, I'll have to finger-out a way to replicate THAT wavy up and down trackage. Any ideers on how to do THAT and still have the trains stay on the track?

They did the Eastbound first due to the heavier traffic (coal trains). The Westbound had more empties. Two 4500-series GP-9s and a pair of 4600-series GP38-2s were the power on this one.

Guten Morgen, it's payday and hopefully I get enough I can order my birthday present an N scale version of SP&S #750. they only have the hourglass version left, and only a couple of them too. then I have to get some MTL heavyweight cars and some Kato Smoothsides to repaint and decal with locomotive decals.

Graduation weekend is upon us. Our daughter Annie gets her bachelor's degree in Neuroscience from the University of New England tomorrow. We will be driving up this afternoon. And yes, she has a job, although it's not a high-paying one. We're a bit concerned about her living plans, as she expects to rent a place with her still-jobless boyfriend. We've told her we're not going to pick up his rent. But, she's an adult now and will have to make her own decisions. She's done OK so far.
As it turns out, I missed the cutoff for this week's Walthers shipment to my LHS, so that stuff will have to wait. I'll be away anyway, so another week won't matter. I've learned a lot from this hobby, and patience is certainly part of that.

Currently 48 with an expected high of 70 with a thunder shower or two.
Opening shift today. One of my daughters is in a community theater play, she gets some type of college credit for it, so I am going to the show after work. Then both daughters and I will go out for something to eat after. Should be a long day. I have this weekend off so not a big deal getting home so late.
Received my package from Walthers yesterday, so tomorrow I will do some track rearranging, and some benchwork rearranging. If the Switch Tender motors show up today, that would be great, but probably not until Monday.

Good morning. Temp 73°, humidity 93%, mostly cloudy, partly cloudy later. High 85°.First order of business on the layout this morning was to get my rebuilt C420 (Lima, Stewart, Athearn, Life-Like) speed matched with my GP9's. That took about fifteen minutes. Longest part of the process is moving the loco from the program track to the main and vice versa and making the entries for the CV's. Got it done and it no longer tries to leave the GP9's in the dust. I have more 'KEEP OFF!' labels to cut out. These are somewhat larger than the ones I cut out yesterday and there's not as many. Those yesterday are 7/16" by 3/32". These are 9/16" by 2/16". That doesn't seem like much but it's a very visible size difference. Later I'll see if I can get a photo of the two side by side. I have no other plans for today.

I'm still working on my sound decoder installation in my 2-10-2. I sent my Soundtraxx Tsuami back to the factory for warrenty work because the light functions did not work. They sent it back and today, I re-installed it. Lights work fine, but there is no sound at all. I checked the obvious stuff such as wiring and sound volume CV's, but I see no cause for this one. Time to email Soundtraxx customer support.
How about a new 1946 Ford ?
