Good Evening Diners,
A sunny but very windy day here. I have managed to get most of the clean-up done on the back yard but hired a crew for the front who are at it now as we speak. There is too much sand from the winter application by the city, and too many spruce needles for me to reasonably clear so I decided to take the easy way out this year.
Todd, have you tried Tamiya masking tape? It is made for models and is only 1/4 " wide. It makes a very clean line.
Well tonight I might actually programme that BLI Pacific I bought in Feb. It has only been twice around the layout so it is due for a little run time. I had to paint the smoke box and firebox as both were painted in graphite. If BLI had bothered to check they would have found out that GTW( CN) only painted them black. Similarly the cab windows should have been red. They made other versions with a black smoke box and red windows, so I just don't get it. Oh well, they are the correct colour now. I used that Tamiya masking tape with nary a smudge or any bleeding. Brush only for me.
Gary, I will do a post or two about my trip but I have to go check on those fellows doing the front yard.

Got most of the things done I started out to do today, all except cutting the rear grass / weeds. Wife gave me a reprieve due to it hitting 95 degrees this afternoon.
Train Front While I did not get everything I wanted done, done I did clear a Erie Built engine that had lost power pick up on the rear truck to active duty again.

Talked with the site member that had them today on the phone, he made me a offer I could not refuses! 11 engines for $250.00 plus shipping! Only down side, where to come up with $300.00 for needed decoders? Plus most will need to be hardwired Just what I need, more engines to work on! Jeffery I guess the Sundown Shop is not for hire? Trade you some engines!
Speaking of shipping.Vince's you have a small package heading your way finally! By the way, the SD 40-2 looks great!
Galaxy Seems you sort of lucked out, I was think a whole new cluster, around $1000.00, glad it was as little as it was!
See you all later, Ken

Well,

I got my new peepers. They are not quite right, but I will give them a week, if not adjusting, then they go back. What concerns me is the right lens..ti is well, for lack of better word fuzzy and OUT of proportion..makes the computer screen seem like ti is 8 inches high on the left, and 13 inches high on the right. so not right. will probably have to go back...that is the trouble when the script is so close to the old one.

anywho Ti"N"y is spinning up and I'm running idea's through my head about roads, what can I use to make a road, a grade crossing, and a couple small lots or a big lot for the layout. I'll go make a thread for it because I also have questions about wiring and what can I do so I can have lighting accessories on the layout but the wires aren't long enough to reach the powerpack.
Heartland Division CB&QJeff. Thanks for sharing the Native American words. I still can't pronounce. I'll have to find a website that would help with that.
Jerry ....... It's good to see you. We care about you, and if you need anything, let us know.
Chris .... I like THAT C&NW GP7. The C&NW prototype pictures you show remind me of the deferred maintenance that was common on the C&NW. For example, one picture showed the crooked track. ..... I do have a CN&NW GP7 myself. It's an Atlas/Kato model. I have not converted it to DCC yet.
Galaxy .... Sounds familiar to me. Automotive electronics get very expensive to repair. The physical-mechaical stuff is in good shape, but the electronics go haywire.

Good afternoon.
Not a bad day today. Went kinda well actually. Felt weird getting in at 11:30 though.

Good morning. It's 72° with 43% humidity. It'll be sunny with a high of 85°.I'm not feeling good this morning so I'm getting a slow start. My balance is off by quite a bit so the room seems to tilt this way and that. Think I'll stay inside today. I probably won't be doing much of anything on the layout.Today's word is dokualela. It's something any model railroader is familiar with. It translates to 'locomotive'.
Morning All,
Currently 60 with an expected high of 87.
Today is another closing shift, and then a meeting after the store closes. I will not get home till after 11:00 tonight.
Waiting on some track I ordered, as well as a few turnouts and electrical switches, and some Switch Tender motors to arrive. I really wish there was a LHS closer than 100 miles. Well actually there is a Hobby Town, but not much railroad stuff, and a new model railroad shop, but it seems he has a lot of older stuff that looks like he bought at a rummage sale.
Still have several buildings to assemble. So that should keep me busy for some time, as well as doing some scenery work.
Prayers to all in need.

Did the grocery shopping.Real exciting.
The Gr. Caravan is going to cost $290 to fix the "communication problem" between the engine and dashboard..the reason? the mother board for the guages is fried! It is a 4 spd auto with Tach, so hard to find even a used part! That is a close call...as I decided I would do it for $300 or less, but $300-500 I'd have to think about it and over $500 nah..I'd sell it and let somebody else deal with it. may sell it if I can for $2000. expect $1500 and take MAYBE $1200-$1000. Take that and a gift from parental units and buy a newER one. Would be nice. But then maybe the newER one would have same problems.??!!
Well, wiating for the call its done.
nap time
Going to be heading soon. So long everyone!

Need to get cracking today, first I need a hair cut. After that tackle the stupid paperwork.
Gary, So I was somewhat right, you lost the layout land rights with Mon and Dad. That is a tough one to over come.
Well got to get started on the paper work.

Lehigh Valley 2089 BN#24: Wish I had the ability to run locomotives like that! The largest that I am able to run are 2-6-0 Moguls. Currently have one from Model Power. However, given the fact that the BT&S is a short line, a Mountain would probably seem like overkill, though the Valley had them. Good morning. Don't have to be at school until 11:30 this morning. Happy about that. Reason is Keystone tests. Seniors are allowed to miss their morning classes for them.

I found it on the "bay" for $70 if I remember correctly, it was undecorated. It's a good runner, I would recommend it to you. It handles 11" curves like 85" cars handle the 18" and above curves.
thank you again guys, yeah I'm going have ti"N"y be my fallback layout 2 x 2 is plenty of space for the time being.

Zoe I'll have the Ham and Asparagus Omelet with a home fries and lots of dark Roast Coffee to start the day.
I'm sitting here by the computer just waiting for the delivery truck to arrive with my new mattress and box springs. Once every 23 years or so, when I can't get comfortable with the old mattress, I splurge and buy a new one. Hoping this helps me to sleep a bit more comfortably. Will know tonight...
The Seneca Waterways Boy Scout Council Recognition Dinner and annual meeting went very well last night and was enjoyable. Two of the people receiving Silver Beaver (the highest award a council can bestow on a volunteer) are folks I know and have worked with in Scouting for many years. One is a "recovering politician" (how he describes himself...) and is now a state supreme court judge and a county judge and I had a good chat. I was telling him about the Museums I volunteer with and he was very interested wanting to know where they are located, when they are open, etc. So I told him about the PiP and the bumper decal. Both he and his wife roared... I told him he had just jumped another 5 points in my esteem!
I also ran into my old Scoutmaster for Woodbadge who is retired from the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (Trombonist). We are also both alumni of Eastman School of Music. So I had a fine time with those folks and many others last night. Also talked with one of the Scout Field Directors who is a rail fan after the program last night and got him on board to get some participation from the council for our Scouting Day at the museum on June 2nd. The person from the museum drew a blank from the executive at the top, so I went to the guy whose job involves setting up such things...
I think I have a plan for getting everything on the list accomplished today... Just waiting for something to keep it from happening. Way too much going on here at the moment. Got three new items given to me yesterday.... If I am supposed to get everything done before I die, I will have to live a long time! (I hope!)
Have a great day out there!

Gary- I’m with everyone else on this. In life there are many people. Better get used to it because they will be in your life no matter what you do. Don’t let them get you in your hobby. I don’t know what happened, so I can’t comment on what was said. But whatever it was it was someones opinion I’m sure. Sometimes peoples comments come across wrong and sometimes….. exactly as they mean them from the safety and anonymity of their IP address. Look at it this way, if someone said they didn’t like your shirt, would you throw all your clothes away? If they said your haircut looked goofy, would you shave your head? What I would do is keep w**king, that is enjoying myself. Look we’ve all had issues when we started out as we were learning. Shoot, I still make more mistakes than you can shake a stick at. You had an issue with some masking tape, ok, many people told you how to best deal with that. What’s that mean? They’ve ALL had that happen. Myself included. Like I said I don’t know what was said, but I think you can see where I’m going with this. And Jeffrey, listen to him. He is the King of Blowing Off Comments. He knows what he speaks of. As for the parents, THAT’s something you have to deal with living under someone elses roof. Negotiation is required. Maybe one of those slide under the bed layouts that can be slid under the bed when not in use.
Jim- Hey thanks for the tip on sealing the tape prior to painting. Even with the burnishing I still have issues with crevises. Crevisses……Crack-like things.
Garry- Glad Gus is doing better.
Welp, best get a movin…..wait. I don’t have anything to do unt…no wait. Just remembered. The weight machine we bought for the boy during his High School Football days and gave away a couple years later….has come back. I have to clear out a space in the corner of the laundry room for it and get it out of the garage where it re appeared yesterday. I told them no givebacks. I guess they forgot. When Brenda said the weight machines coming back a week or so ago, I said “what weight machine?” Oh well. Need to do a bit of laundry anyway and then the groceries for the restaurant, then w**k tonight.
Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

ULRICH- I thought by now, you knew politics in any country, in any system, most notably the democratic-based ones, that politics is all about mudslinging, dirty digging and digging into each member's closet to see what they find there to discredit them! I hope this doesn't deter you and make your run as CLEAN as possible.. I could give you a campaign slogan or two, but that would be discussing it too much here and taboo! Stop in the diner when you can!
GARY BN N Scaler- I gather it was something your parents said. We had a situation like that some years ago. the minor pointed out {with our help} such things like: at least he wasn't into/spending money on drugs, They knew where he was, he wasn't running the streets getting into trouble, spending money on other than trains, etc etc...IIRC he won his argument to have space in the family room for his trains!!

JEFF and NP2626: Thanks guys! THAT's a nice looking steamer NP!
MIKE (MBINSEWI): Thank you sir! Walcott? Heck, THAT's not too far from home here in Clarence (Cedar Co.) I'm familiar with MIRON, they've bid some projects I've covered. One advantage to modeling the Cheap and Nothing Wasted, especially in the '87-'93 era: it's hard to over-weather the locomotives. Even the Zito repaints grimed-up fast!
The MP-15 in the background is destined to become the CNW 1303. Here's what it looked like just a year or two after a complete paint job:

Evening folks! Yea, I got time for quick one in a frosted mug please, my dear! Thanks, keep the change.
Just kind of strolling through the activities the of last day or so. Our grown kids joined us for a Mother's Day grill out yesterday, too cold to eat outside! but I use the grill all year around, so nothing new. Helping a friend of the son with his 1987 garden tractor. A little labor and some misc. parts, and it's good to go! And for payment, I get a Jiffy ice auger for ice fishing this winter, (Hopefully we get a summer this year before winter comes back! Yikes! ) It's not a new one, and he was going to sell it, and offered it to me for the tractor work. I don't mind that! Warm weather coming for the rest of the week! YESSSSS.
So, NP2626 never have had the chance to eat breakfast on a train. It sure is in the future plans though! The kids keep asking Ma and I when we might take a cruise. I don't want a cruise! just put me on a train and send me around the country! I'd be a happy man! Between her and I, we have family all over, so what a great vacation that would be!
Terry ! Nice trees man, coming up this week, leaving Thursday am, about 4:00. And we can't WAIT! I have lots to do up there. Grandson will be joining us the end of the month, coming from Colorado, spends his summer vacation with his dad and us, and he loves it up there. He told me last year..."Grandpa, I wait all school year for this!" I just about melted on the spot.
Garry, I wish your friend the best. Just a couple of nights ago, I watched a thing on Nova ( IIRC) about venom and spiders, and such......wow.....lots of bad things! And Todd and Galaxy thanks for the color / camera / light tutorial, I'm going to try the daylight bulbs. And, the foliage I used on the yellow-ish looking trees was WS light green, which, when you look at it, has a lot of yellow in it anyway. Chris I like those weathered C & NW jeeps, nice and beat-up. Just the way I always remember them, here in WI. By the way, I lived about 6 years of my life, in IA, on a farm by Walcott, Scott County. And the company I retired from, MIRON Const. Co., Inc has an office out there in Cedar Rapids. Never got sent there for work, always kept me busy in WI.
I better suck up and get outa here, before I put everyone to sleep! Have a good one folks!
Mike.

BN/SP&S Gary, I hope your Oma continues to improve on her health. And I would second what Galaxy, Ulrich and others have said, that you don't need to put away your MRR stuff (even if someone in here said something that shouldn't have been said, don't let it keep you from enjoying your model railroading. At least, stick around the Diner, even if you don't go out into the main forum. One idea on your 3-era layout, your structures can be as old as the furthest-back time, but you'll likely need a bunch of autos, trucks, etc. (and maybe a variety of figures, depending on how far apart the three eras are).
I would have to agree with Ulrich's saying that sometimes you change how you had been thinking you wanted to build your layout. I've had "breaks" from MRR'ing - one was from somewhere before 1990 until a few (or a dozen?) years ago. Had a 4X8 sheet and other lumber and stuff stored in my storage shed about all of that time. When I decided to pull it out, I wound up using the lumber, but not making a 4X8 after all. Besides, from what little I have seen/read about the SP&S, it's in some beautiful country, so the fun part will be when you get going on the scenery, I suspect. (By the way, my plan now (& when I get more space) is sorta like a shelf layout. (Widest part of what I have right now, is 2-1/2 feet deep)
One more idea - get yourself a layout design program, and you can play around with different designs (and save the varieties) without cutting or messing up any wood. I'll let the other guys tell you what software on a PC is available; I use RailModeller on my Mac. (Can be found at: http://www.railmodeller.com/)
JaBear, if they only had a bridge from California over to NZ & Ozland - but with restrooms(loos?) every 3 or 4 hours along the way, of course! - it'd be somewhat more do-able to see "y'all Down Under" there. I looked up Otorohanga, and got a good chuckle out of the way they approached their "name" problem. Hey, it w*rked, right?
Barry - hope your op session on Wednesday goes as well (or better) about Mr. Murphy being MIA on that.
Jeffrey, so Mr. Berra (the catcher on New York's ball team was "Nail" or "Fork"? And on your painting, you do a great job - I can't tell which locos you finger-painted (and how do you get the fine detail with that?...).
Okay, Terry, so now, you know that the next time you're heading in the direction of the LHS with the wife, if she says you have 10 minutes, just say "Oh, I'll just take care of it on the way back. Don't want to make you late...." Right? Hey, man, you have a bunch of trees (but I couldn't see them for the forest...) When did you change over to modeling the Amazon, by the way? (The trees look good great, and I'm guessing that doesn't involve nearly as much w**k as we would expect, right?)
Chris, I forgot to tell you that I enjoyed your (oh-so-you!) signature on your posts. (chuckle,..guffaw..tee hee...)
Oh, BN/SP&S Gary - Jeff reminded me of one of our policies in the Diner. (We try not to feed any trolls that wander in...) As he said, they get bored easy and leave (or a forum moderator & Vinnie, uh.."talk" with the person...) And here's a rough plan of what my layout currently (about 2 to 2.5 feet by 8 feet, in two sections) looks like (disregard the colored dots - possible uncoupler spots):
W**k today was pretty good, not lots of people to tend to, and I was able to get all my paperw**k done before I left. I LIKE that! Did a little painting on the Merchants' Row storefronts - like part of what was done, and will see about the rest tomorrow evening.
Got an email from daughter tonight - she and their family are taking a short trip, and wanted me to feed their dog Joey (Skipperke dog) while they were out. I'll swing by after w**k and see where they keep the food and all that.
I'll be heading for home now. Prayers for a good night's rest for all who can use it, as well as for healing, comfort, and good friends.
Blessings,
Jim in Cape G.
