Hey, Vincent - if you find a place that carries that black styrofoam, let us know where, okay? (Of course, if it's from ExactRail, we may not be able to afford it, but...). Wink Man, I think your place's schedule-makers take the cake, for sure! Thumbs Down I don't think it would be possible to mess it up much worse! Wonder who they'll give that task to, once Daniel & Jeannene drop the ball the one last time?

I found some online. $20 bucks for a 1/2" x 24" x 108" piece. That's a better deal than the white stuff I bought (and cut earlier) for 10 bucks for a 1/2"x24"x48" I got from ACmoore:

http://www.reliablehardware.com/blackrigidpolyethylenefoam-12thick.aspx

I never did find my razorsaw, so I took the styrofoam I had and cut it with a handsaw. Worked fine. I have all the blocks cut out for my 21 Thrall 4000 Gons (20 MDC, 1 Athearn RTR), and maybe enough left over for my 13 PS 4000 Gons (all Walther's). I just need to get the hot glue gun from my sister to glue the wood load frames together.

As far as the schedule, I don't think Jeanne wants the scheduling duites again, and I'm pretty sure when Daniel screw up it'll go back to Donnavan. If that happens, I'll likely get saturdays off again.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evening, Flo, I'd like the roast beef special, with asparagus, a baked potato with butter and sour cream, and a glass of Finger Lakes wine, please. Thank you.

Hey, how come Vinnie looks a bit "on edge" tonight (y'might say, with an "itchy finger"...Surprise) tonight? You say I should ask JaBear? Hmm....

Terry - I knew that was the 'before' photo - I was trying to figure if the place/area (where you were going to put those trees) was back in that hill area (which in your photo was to the left of the train standing) or if you meant they were going into the area between the train and that highway next to the tracks. So, which area did you mean? Ah, I just got to your "after" photo - you were talking about the between-the-RR-and-the-highway area! And EXCELLENT job with the trees (and the placement of them)!! BowBow Yet more great w**k there!

SP&S Garry, yep, I hear you. I got (at a good price) a Digitrax DB150 (the booster that comes with their bigger sets, and the power supply for it), but the cost of the radio throttle and the panel (that you plug the throttle into to acquire a loco) are holding me up, also. So I plan to wire and put in blocks for DC now, with them set up to be readily converted over when I can afford the other parts of the DCC puzzle. (Besides, I figure I'll let the early adopters figure out the bugs and such, and then all we need to do is to ask them, since they'll be the DCC gurus by then, right? Smile, Wink & Grin

JaBear, so what's the deal with Vinnie today? (Don't ask? Um, okay...).Whistling Sorry for any (unintended) slight there, mate! Oops I shouldn't have made that mistake, since I do recall your (ahem...cough..) clarification of the whereabouts of your location. Wink I don't think I've told you before, but I like your signature! Thumbs Up

Ken, it sounds like you've been tending to a few gremlins on the layout. Good show, and hope you continue to make the progress with those cars lurking in the tunnel! Will your store be closed on Memorial Day (or date of observance, for the traditionalists who recall that far back...)?

Curt - your trip sounds like it was... (wait for it...) legendary! (okay, I'll probably hear from the lawyers tomorrow...) As you said, can't think of much of anything to make it better. Hope you can post some of your favorite photos after you get time to look through them.

Todd, a lot of the time, I use a white primer for my structure kits - but actually, on the Merchants' Row, I used a flat "Brick Red" (paint or primer, not for sure there). So I must be in good company, if you forget about the same sort of things. Thumbs Up Oh, on your last thing, I don't have a garage, so guess where my stuff winds up? Whistling (If a hint helps, I only have a 10X10 storage unit other than my apartment...)

David P. - so long as your layout does the trick for you, it's the right size! Keep in mind, some like almost-prototypical length mainline runs, others like industrial switching in one downtown section/district, some like coal train drags, others enjoy prairie RR's serving multiple grain elevators. There are great things about each (and trade-offs for each, as well). How've you & the layout been doing? And the business, also?

Hey, Vincent - if you find a place that carries that black styrofoam, let us know where, okay? (Of course, if it's from ExactRail, we may not be able to afford it, but...). Wink Man, I think your place's schedule-makers take the cake, for sure! Thumbs Down I don't think it would be possible to mess it up much worse! Wonder who they'll give that task to, once Daniel & Jeannene drop the ball the one last time?

Paul, I once had an idea like that about using the white beaded foamboard for something. Found out about the same kind of things you mentioned. Oops Any of it that I use nowadays, I take outside (on a non-windy day) to cut... (and that isn't very often at all!)

Our weather today was pretty warm (but I was only out in it once or twice, knowing it was hot and humid...). I think we got to the upper 80's (88 or 89 F, depending on which town/city we're talking about in the area). Didn't hear what the dreaded heat index was. I think we may get some rain through later tonight (but those in SW Missouri and Oklahoma/NE Ark. better watch out, it sounds like).

Talked with the landlord the tail end of this last week (about the dying fridge in my apartment - I think it's the original one), and tomorrow they're gonna see about getting me a new one. So in the few years I've been here, we've replaced: the air conditioner (older 220 v. for a newer, remote-controlled 110 v.), the faucet in the kitchen (and the squirter hose thingee), the shower/tub controls (both the shower head and the controls/lever thing). Luckily for them, I'm still here and paying rent...

Zzz..Huh?! Oh, sorry there - I got a full tummy with dinner, and kinda dozed off there a bit from it.

CB&Q Garry, have you had time lately to get much MRR'ing done, with your doctor's trip and keeping tabs on Gus and his progress?

[Edit]: Jeffrey - that SL&O billboard is the one I was asking about earlier. Glad you posted it. Thumbs Up

Prayers for those healing up (or in need of healing), in need of comfort and/or a good night's rest. And we might add a prayer for better w**k schedules for several Diners (and for calmer co-w**kers...).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.

It's been an uneventful day. I spent some time going through some old data CD's and DVD's looking for some software. Some of it won't run under Windows 8 but most of it will. One of those that does work is RRTRAINS 2000. Eventually I'll go through and make a new inventory of all my locos and rolling stock. The old inventory is woefully outdated. I also have to get around to printing up some cab numbers for my locos. That means first color matching the paint for the background color on the paper. Have you ever tried scanning a loco to get a good color match in MSPaint?  Not exactly my idea of fun. I have some clear and white Testor's decal film but my old HP 3930 Deskjet printer isn't the best at printing on that stuff and the results are entirely hit and miss, mostly miss. Usually the ink cracks badly as it dries. Tonight I'm listening to an old Niel Diamond CD I have. Viva Las Vegas.

Well, time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Ray: Thinking of you when I selected tonight's photo.

Good evening.

Did get my English done, and also got work done on the 109 by adding spots to it. Looks sharp now.

Night everyone.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a cup of decaf, and a hot fudge sundae would really, really hit the spot right now!

Man!  Am I beat...  Long, but fun, day out at the museum.  I drove in the parking lot about 9:35 AM, just after a few other crew members arrived on property, signed in both on the mandatory crew sheet and the museum volunteer log, got my radio and waited for what to do next.  Found gthey already had the caboose open so I oput my gear into Erie C-254 and claimed her as my charge for the day!  By the time I got on the caboose the engineer already had the 80 tonner 1654 started and warming up.  After checking out a few items that we needed like the guest log (just records the # of passengers each trip) I went back in the depot to find a blank copy of the form...  Weren't any!  We used the last copy last fall and no one thought to run more...  I finally suggested, after 3 of us spent 15 minutes checking every file cabinet and drawer in the office) that I just keep the stats on a ruled piece of paper.  The Conductor agreed and we all went back over to the train.  The engineer and conductor for the morning called a crew meeting to go over safety and procedures for the day.  We found that no one had certified the track being in gauge for our first run of the year, so we decided to leave early with extra crew to run a slow trip up the tracks and make sure everything was in proper order. At that point we have over an hour before the first official run of the day and figured we would have some time to relax at the upper end of the line...

We all boarded the train to take our assigned places to check the track and the engineer climbed into the cab ready to move the train.  He blew the horn for the move, decided he didn't need one of the engines up and running on the 80 tonner and went to switch it off whereupon both diesels immediately died!  I was on the front porch of C-254 and looked up at the engineer who said...  "Oh!  This is not good!!!"  He tried to start engine #1 and all it did was go click....  Then he said, This is definitely NOT good!!!"  It seems that 1654 has not been charging the batteries well or the batteries haven't been holding a charge well....  So!  The extension cord comes out and we fiddle with the batteries for 20 minutes...  We would have just started the 45 tonner or LV 211 but 211 is in the shop for a new water pump, and the 45 tonner (Beebee Station) was buried behind a whole string of equipment that couldn't be easily moved before we needed to start.  Luckily old 1654 decided to come to life after the charge and ran flawlessly the rest of the day, but I think will be getting new batteries or some charging work done on her this week!

Got up to Mi9dway with just enough time to !: certify the track was OK, and 2. get Midway opened up before the first trolley arrived with close to 50 visitors...  That gave us standing room only for the first trip back down the line...  i had just told those standing that they absolutely needed to maintain three points of contact just about the time we heard the 3 horn blasts signalling the train would be departing (backing down the line).  I was ignored by a few patrons as usual...  Engineer let her move a bit hard taking up coupler slack fast and C-254 gave a good solid G-force as she moved...  A couple of the passengers lost there balance and fell onto others!  No one was hurt and I calmly said, "That's why!"  At the other end every single person on my caboose followed my instructions on how to safely detrain...

Rest of the day was uneventful and low in attendance for opening day.  Most trips were less than a dozen passengers.  Not good for the bottom line, but I did have fun!

I do like playing with the 1/1 scale trains!!! Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh

Terry, glad to hear you son is back stateside!

Hope you all have a restful night!

I just don't know what can be done in 21 x 39 inches

Z Scale comes to mind if you don't mind watching your trains while wearing magnifier lenses. I ran Z Scale for a little while in the 80's. That didn't last long. N Scale seemed immense by comparison.

Good evening ....

Terry ... Nice layout photo! ... By the way, I think you said, but how far north are you in Wisonsin?

Ray .... Are you wornout from today's caboose duty?

How about a 1948 Pontiac since nobody was interested in the Fords or Plymouths?

not sure either it'd take a lot of skill(that I lack), if you need temporary power and cars you know who to holler at! Big Smile

lol. Most BN geeps eventually got converted to the GN standard of 4 steps. The easiest ones to model would be the ex-NP ones that hadn't yet been converted to 4-steps. IIRC, all the conversions were done in the late-70s to early 80s.

Packer, I see that N scale switching layout idea. I'd recommend Kato NW2, Atlas trainman GP15-1 for switching locos if you're doing the BN.

I'm thinking a GP7/9.... But IDK how I'd change the step wells like i've been changing the ones on my BN units.

Afternoon All,

Well got most of what I needed to do finished. OK I tried to cheap out and use some of the bead-board insulation I could get here, instead of the pink stuff I have been using, but need to get in Reno. Waste of time, energy and the few bucks I spent on it. Should have known better. I will try and stop at H.D. tomorrow after w**k and buy the right stuff.

Terry, nice looking trees. Also glad your son is back in the USA.

Prayers to all in need.

afternoon guys

Been looking for my razor saw ever since I got off work. I think my sister may have borrowed it... I'm wanting to cut the craft styrofoam I use for coal loads. It's pretty convincing when it's painted black because it retains some sparkle. I just wish I could find it in black. lol

The thing with the schedule was fine when one of my managers (Donnovan) made the schedule. He knew why, and with him being a fellow MRR (yeah, he has a layout in his attic) he understood and let me have it off. The thing was, when he made the schedules, everything worked fine (no on overtime, no shifts short or over-staffed, all positions covered, days off were usually consecutive, everyone got hours based on how they worked, etc.) and it was done by Friday (schedule starts Tuesdayat 6am). Everyone was happy with the schedule, except for nightshift (because they all wanted ALL weekend off to go clubbing, and there wasn't an excess of people so most could screw around). So the nightshift manager (Daniel) complained to the GM (Jeannene) about not getting enough responsibilities (yet he can't even keep his shift in line; I've had the back door blocked by trash, lots of customers in line, and most of them are smoking or hiding to text on their cellphones).

So Daniel makes the schedule with Jeannene advising. My father told Jeannene why, and almost every time she made the schedule after that I had to work saturday. Jeannene can't make a schedule to save her life (lots of under or overstaffing, giving herself extra people and cutting other manager's shifts to be shorthanded, overtime galore, uncovered positions, playing favorites, no consecutive days off, etc.) and she never has it done early. She says having people have 2 days off in a row screws up the schedule, but I've worked 10 in a row when she was making them... She usually gets it out Monday night or Tuesday morning. Combine this with Daniel being a slacker (sits in the office on the computer all night long) and you have a reciepe for distaster. He's only made the schedule for 2 weeks, and he's screwed up both times. The first time he never did it, so Jeannene did it on sunday evening, then gave it to Donnavan to check. Then she changed it afterwards, and then the week was FUBAR. This week he did it, but waited until late at night to post it. So a lot of people came in thinking they had to work on tuesday, but didn't. On top of that, 3 people were on overtime by saturday, some shifts are short-handed, or postiones aren't covered (tomorrow they are missing a few spots, I work one of them but if I get callled in, I'll be overtime; me and a few others even told the Jeannene this and she didn't fix it). I think Jeannene may have had enough of it, since she said Daniel's on his last chance to get it right. Let's just say I hope Daniel screws up again (along with most people).

In other news I laid out track on my "fremi" (free-mini) module. It's 39x21, so not a whole lot of room. I have toyed with the idea of an N-scale switching layout though...

Terry, that does look good.

Curt, Sounds like you had fun. It could have been better, you could have won the lottery, lol

Good prevening. (If you watch The Big Bang Theory, you'll understand).

Working on the last English paper of the year. Hope to have time to work on the 109 a little more this evening. Going to add the dark gray spots to it. Will add decals afterwards.

A VERY good Sunday afternoon, Diners.83f and mostly cloudy, lots of humidity. Tornado watches south of us.

Got the trees planted, here's an after shot( for Cape JimLaugh):

PFC SON is CONUS. Somewhere in the US of A anyways. The DIL called. He is early. I am very relieved.

That's all for now!

Looked at the date on it. I was only two years old back then.

See JEFFREY I told you I've been into Model Railroading for a Looooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg time. Big Smile

I'd already surmised that from some of the stuff you sent. Several of the locos have been rebuilt and run like champs. The original manufacturers wouldn't recognize many parts of the drives though, especially that of the Lima diesel. I'm pretty sure that Stewart would have had a fit about what I did to an AS16 frame in repowering the Lima loco.

Sheesh! Just make me feel old why don't ya! By the way, you're welcome for the work on the GP9's. Just a simple matter of cutting the capacitors.

my layout bit it and tipped over. #50's fine, running a bit erraticaly but I think that's because I need clean its wheels and the track on ti"N"y.

Hello peoples. I just decided I would stick my head in and say hello. There is not much going on with me today. I got some yard work done this morning and this afternoon I will be going to the spillway for some fun with friends.

Jeff: Take it easy man. You cannot be bouncing all over the layout anymore. I know you are only 52 but with your health it is more like 72. Slow down.

Ken: I did not know your layout was so big. It makes my little 2-track shelf layout look like a flea circus.

Curt: It sounds like you have had a great vacation.

Galaxy: I hope your other half can get a good paying job.

Hello to ONR Fan. Welcome.Welcome

No train news except my Bmann gp9's are running great. Thanks Jeff.

I will be back when I can. CUL8R

Morning All,

Currently it is 50 with an expected high of 73 under mostly sunny skies.

Have to do some grocery shopping, and pick up one of my meds later. Then to Lowes to get some 1x3 lumber for benchwork joists. Then maybe drive into Reno, 30 miles one way, to Home Depot to get another sheet of foam, since Lowes does not carry the extruded type. If I get all that done early enough, I may get to lay some more track today.

Vincent, we have several people where I w**k that seem to be favorites of the manager that makes the schedule up. I am not one of them. There are guys that only have 1 closing shift a week, I usually get 3 or 4. Life is not fair, just grin and bear it.

1329 days until I retire, but who is counting.

   Prayers to all in need.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday breakfast buffet please. Thank you

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 87.

I like the photos of the old car carriersYes.

Jim- Looking good. I painted my corner café (Adele’s IIRC) white. Well, just the “wood” parts. What a pain THAT was. I need to learn to prime ANYthing to be painted white. Will I do it next time? No. Haven’t done it yet and I’ve been painting models for nigh-on 40+ years. Slow learner.

Gary- I just place the insulated joiner on one rail. It makes no difference which side, however, with my background, I felt most comfortable placing it on the negative rail as the trains normal forward direction of travel.

JP- Good to see you in more often.

Vincent- Now I don’t know this of course, but based on my experience, most likely someone complained you get Saturdays off regular or has been. When your Boss (or someone else) found out what it was for, either he decided or someone else complained about why you get off all the time for your leisure activity (they probably have a Thesaurus full of other terms they may have used) and they can’t get off for their leisure activities from time to time. And, since it has been awhile since you wo*ked a Saturday…Confused...you have time to make up.

JaBear-  You’ll have to forgive me. I’m from Williamsville. We were taught New Zealand and Australia were the same. Yes I know sticky subject down thereBlack Eye. Also taught Chris Columbus discovered America (never could figure out how he could have "discovered" a land already populated, but we got a day off school for it so hey, it's your story. I was all for it), Mercury was safe to play with in Science class, believed we’d be living in space by 1999, Thought all people spoke English so when traveling abroad if you spoke slowly and loudly, the “foreigners” could understand you and imagine my surprise when I found out we didn’t own most of CanadaSurprise. I guess that’s what you get when your teachers are someones Mom or DadLaugh.

Not sure what I’ll do today, probably more outside w**k as I didn’t get to the removal of any living berry plants. Oh, and Brenda has done it againConfused. Found out I’m giving most of the berry plants to a girl and offered them up to someone else. Actually to the person who I already was going to give some to in the first place. But since she was gonna fill in a large place, I told her she could have the rest. Last night, Brenda offered me to dig all up today and give them all to him this afternoon saying to me…”there see? Done. That’s how you get rid of stuff” I said I already had done that. I didn’t go any further or she would have countered with why do you insist on giving to her what’s the difference who? Then continues until it sounds like you’re a teenager with a crush insisting on wanting to be the one who sharpens the prettiest girl in the class’ pencil. Funny thing is the person she gave them to is the girl’s dad. (shakes head) Oh well. You’d think I would be used to it by now.

ANYway…., lots of odds and ends still to do and like Barry, I too have a garage that has overfilled.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Morning All,

The train portion of the vacation is overCrying. It has been a incredible week. The highlights are:

Rode Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad

RR Museum of PA- When I walked in and saw what was there I was in awe.

Rode Strasburg RR

PA Dennis invited me to see his layout. He is a excellent modeler and very friendly. Had a enjoyable visit with him.

Steam Town- Rode a short excursion.

Altoona Railroaders Museum

Horseshoe Curve- Caught plenty of NS freight action. The highlight was NS was running the NKP Berkshire excursion train when we were there!! To make it even better the Pennsy heritage unit was on the other end! I have video of them in both directions. I asked myself afterwards "What could possibly make this day better?"

This coming week we will be visiting friends and family and should be home this coming Sunday.

I will talk to you later and prayers for those in need.

Good morning. It's 72° with 98 % humidity. The high will be 88°.

Not feeling up to par this morning. Nerve pain in the neck and back, cramps in rib muscles on right side. To say it's distracting is an understatement. Maybe I was moving around too much yesterday. I think I'll take it easy today.

Today's word is galadá adananádi. That translates to freight.

 Morning

 Flo, Diet Dew Pleases

Feel a little better this morning, to bad I have to work today. Sigh Going to be a long day as well.

Train Front Yesterday I did spray down all the electrical blocks of the layout with contact cleaner and the thermal protector did not kick in while running 8 engines. Today after work I will try 10 engines and see what happens.

Need to fish out 7 missing cars from under the 13 foot long tunnel when I get home as well. Never a fun thing to do.

 See you all after work.

CNCharlie

ONR fan, welcome. I've actually been to Millbrook a couple of times back in the mid '90s. I live in Winnipeg, by the way, and was there on business.

Well, time for lunch.

CN Charlie

Really?  What type of business?  Millbrook is a great little town to live in.  We moved here from Toronto about 10 years ago.  We wanted to raise our family away from the big city.

GEE Guys that wasn't "Australian" that was "New Zealand" !!!!! Smile, Wink & Grin

They might be our closest neighbours but they talk funny. We say "Gidday" whereas they say "G'day" and when we count to ten "six" is six not "sex" I could go on but it would be like suggesting that Canadians sound like "Yanks". (Looks nervously around for Vinnie in case he thinks I'm about to incite a "free for all". Will now take my banana milkshake and sit as unobtrusively as a large breaded bear-like person can in the rear booth).

Vincent, this will probably be cold comfort,to you, but there has been many times when I've been "the Boss" that I've had to miss out on going to the train club. Come to think of it, if you asked my wife, she'ed tell about the family times I've missed as well!!! Sigh

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Night All, "Sweet Dreams"'

Cheers, the Bear.
