BN 24- Depending on how you want to weather your equipment it is not that expensive. I buy my brushes from Wally World, Jo-Ann's, and Lowe's and definitely not the expensive ones. I also either use powders or Acrylic paint (little bottles from Jo-Ann's). Granted with Christmas you are probably going to wait but compared to so much in this hobby weathering is pretty reasonable and you get a lot of bang for your buck.

ok, my LHS doesn't carry weathering kits so I have to order one. I'll check if they have some weathering brushes. I was gonna do the powder weathering, and find some graffiti for some of the cars I have.

Hi

evening check in.

KEN- you have to be very careful with a "rent to own deal" too. SOme only offer one year at a higher rent thna the house is worth with extra applied to your "down payment" to the owner. THEN YOU have to go get financing on yhour own! And with your credit damaged may be impossible. Others offer you a house with an exhorbitant interest rate to the former owner. Still ohters you pay mroe than the house is worth.  It could lead you itno a trap worse than the one you are gettign out of!  Check his details carefully with a lawyer  if you want to go that route!!! SOme are more or less a scam to illicit more "rent" out of you when they know you won't really qualify for a Mortgage loan to actaully buy the house. SOme are more or less scams to rip you off if the owner offers "financing".

Well, we rested after watching the movie "Secret of GIving" with RebaMcintire. GOOD movie.

Now maybe we have dinner, I dunno, we are a lazy day except for my chores earlier!

Rain still lurking I think, and do we feel it! The bones ache for both of us!

 Afternoon Dinners

 Flo, Beer Pleases

Went to K-10 today to see Simon 1966, fellow member here at the site. But I missed him, so I left. Just was not in the mood.

Bank Of Stupid Has Beat Me. Got the letter yesterday saying my Loan Will Not Be Modified, and the reason? Because of my poor credit score with me being behind on the house payment? Hum, maybe if they lowered my house payment (I have a old loan at 7% which was great when I bought the house) then I would not be behind! Bang Head Plus, I am not trying to buy a house, I am in the *&^% House!

It Is What It Is. I am tired of fighting with the Idiot Machine called Bank Of America, I give up and I am done!

While I am not looking forward to the move it self in a strange way I am looking forward to moving. Even Sue has wrapped her head around the idea, when this mess started 4 years ago she wanted to stay in the houses. House is bigger than we need and the utility bill in the summer is back breaking.

Drove around some today and found a smaller house I am guessing is 1100 sq feet (mine is 1557) and has a fenced in yard (for Shaddy the Irish Wolfhound) and a detached 2 car garage! Big Smile It is all so not far away from where Sue and I lived before we bought this house 21 years ago. It is all so a rent to own, I like that idea.

 See you all later, Ken

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, a cup of hot chocolate would hit the spot right now.

I'm soon to be heading out to go to an open house for my SIL's 70th. Birthday.  She also bought a house last summer just outside of Canandaigua and many of us haven't seen it yet, so this is a good change to see her "retirement" home.

Got some bad news from my son at church this morning.  His MIL little dog, Betsy, got hit and killed in the road yesterday afternoon.  She spent a lot of time outdoors, but has never before gone into the road that we know of.  She was a sweet little girl I have become very attached to. She would come over and put her head on my lap when I was sitting in the house and just look up at me with those beautiful brown eyes and beg for me to pet her....  I'm gonna miss the little thing.  We do become attached to pets, don't we (even when they aren't really ours...).

My granddaughters were both lambs in the Christmas Pageant at Church this morning.  They have one lamb costume fort a "Black Sheep"...  Guess who was the "Black Sheep" this year???  Granddaughter #2!  Type casting if I ever saw it...Whistling  My expensive old Shure Large Diaphragm Condenser mic did the job very well...  The Education Director for the Church wants to have the Church buy it from me.  Told her, "No, but ity can be borrowed any time you need it."

Best get moving.

Later!

I have the C628 back together and just put it through a test run. It runs like a champ and is awaiting the installation of a decoder. I have two perfectly good Digitrax DH123 decoders but I don't  have the DHWH 9-pin connectors for them.

Well, now that the nite's excitement is over.

The dishes are done.

the 2 loads of 3 laundry is done.

Cleaned up the kitchen a bit. {still have to attack and clean and organize the pantry}.

It is raining here...there is uspposed to be some snow storms {MAYBE} onthe way here. I would just as soon it be a 2-3 incher and not heavy to drag down power lines and trees...we need to EASE into winter, not get dumped on like other areas!

We shall see the models can take it more off the coast too. But the coastal areas in question don't need a blizzard too!

Well, I'd best get on t o the other load of laundry.

MOH is wrapping presents for the nurse tending MIL and for secret santa at work.

Well I'm deep into the C628 remotor project. I had intended to use a motor from a Model Power loco but that turned out to be too wide. I'd often wondered why Model Power still uses the ala Athearn wide hood body shells. Now I know. Their motor is too dang fat to fit in a scale width shell! So, change in plans. I had to do a bit of cutting on the C628's frame to do it but I shoehorned in a motor from an Athearn SW1000. I was able to reuse all the shaft pieces from the C628. I had to trim the male spline shafts a little to make up for the flywheels but everything looks to be fitting in place.

In the two photos below, the first shows the original motor in place. The second shows the Athearn motor set in place with the shafts connected.

Good Evening Gang!

I am late today. We stayed up late last night and somehow got up a lot later this morning. It was a gray and rainy day, so Petra and I just drifted along.

The number of my supporters has passed the 1,000 mark - it feels good to see that their is a fairly large group having interest in what I have to say Smile, Wink & Grin

All over the country, there have been special church services today to pay our respect and express our sympathy to the victims of the shooting in Connecticut.

Starting Tuesday, I´ll be able to do some work on that loco kit. Frankly, I am a little intimated.

Have a good one!

Good Morning!!!

Sunday Breakfast Buffet please. Yes and coffee too. Thanks.

JP- Good to see you. Sorry about the back, we’ve all been in your shoes at least once so you definitely have my sympathies. I’d also jump on the girlfriends suggestion about the layout. Keep in mind it could be a setup though. Let you get started on something you like to do, then come up with many reasons to pull you off it for a while. Seems to be some ego thing they have to see if you hold them more important than…..well whatever you have planned or whoever it's with.

I'm going up to the restaurant tonight at 8 pm as I usually do on Sundays to watch Family Guy and American Dad with a friend who works there. Tonight however, we will not be watching those, we are going to watch Ted. Something I'm keeping from Brenda until after because she will come up with some reason to hold me or keep me from going. Maybe not, but based on her usual M.O. the chances are good.

Looked up the planet Venus on the internet and yup, there it was…..the woman factory. At least that’s where they import the brains from. I have no idea where they get their logic from.

Speaking of backs Galaxy, glad yours is feeling better.

Did a couple loads of laundry yesterday, then Brenda decided we needed to go in town. She wanted to try some new place, turned out to be closed already (so we ate at Chedders which was so so), and go to Big Lots. Now people, at least here, don’t believe the commercials entirely. Some things are cheap, and some things are cheap because they either don’t make it anymore or….it’s cheap. But, if you can still get it…., Walmart’s cheaper. Bottle Tide laundry soap Big Lot’s price..$8, Walmart’s…$6.95. Yes same stuff. Today, I have to put shelf up and ohhhhhh….don’t know what she will change for me. I still you know have not got my office cleaned up yet. I told her I was gonna do that yesterday she said “yes, you should” 3 minutes later she spoke of us going into town.

Welp, best head out. I see Jeff’s brought that “Consolidated Gas” tanker in here twice now. Considering the diet in Louisiana and not know just how many people he “consolidated” with, I don’t want to be around ifn he cracks the valve on that thing. He’s just ornery enough to do it too.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

EDIT; And I have NO idea why the software changed the font during my chat with JP. According to this edit window, the font and type size are the same.

Morning All,

Just sitting here drinking some coffee.

Only plans for today is to install a tortoise, but I will have to rig something up since the machine will have to sit to the side of the switch. The switch sits on top of where 2 tables come together. When I was redoing it I tried different  locations but the current one was the only one that worked wellSigh. I may also wrap some Christmas presents.

Had a very nice visit with the grand kids yesterday.

Todd- Glad you are feeling better.

Hope everyone has a good day and prayers for those in need.

Mornin' everyone...

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special, eggs over easy, bacon, homefries, and a double order of sourdough toast this morning to go along with the dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug.  Please and thank you Ma'am.

Having much the same weather as Barry is today here in the Finger Lakes.  Dull is a good word to describe what I see outside.  Currently 43°F under thick dark clouds.  Won't be making much electricity today I guess...

Today is the Christmas Pageant at Church.  My granddaughters will be lambs and angels I think...  Funny how much more fun these things are when relatives are in them.  LOL  This afternoon I will be going to Canandaigua to celebrate my oldest SIL's 70th. anniversary of her birth!  Growing up she was one of my sister's best friends.  That was how I met my future wife.  When I was in 5th. grade I remember thinking what a homily kid she was...  Either she changed, or my perception of girls changed... Probably some of both! Smile, Wink & Grin

Hope all of you have a good day.... And, don't forget to remember the innocents whose lives have been cut short and the families who lives have been changed forever!  I keep thinking that those kids were about the same age as my oldest granddaughter..... Sigh

Good morning. It's 67° with 100% humidity. The high will be 72°. There's a high chance of rain.

There's a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 1 pm. At the moment we're getting just a light rain but that's due to increase in severity around sunrise. Severe storms with locally heavy rain are possible. With the power company's track record there's a fair chance I may lose power at some point. Chances of cable going out are fairly good too.

This morning I'm working on the Mehano (IHC) Alco C628. After doing a direct comparison I found the wheelsets from a Model Power F2 are a perfect match for the C628. The axles and gears are identical as seen below and they have the slightly smaller flange needed to clear my turnouts.

That leaves two wheelsets needed for the idler axles, one per truck. On those I can carefully turn down the flanges on a couple of the pizza cutter wheelsets. I have six to work with, I should be able to get a couple right.

The plan for the rest of the day is to work on a few more freight cars and watch a couple of movies and/or documentaries.  Failing that I can always use this weather for what it seems to be made for. Sleeping.

Morning Coffee with the Sunday Paper in the Diner

GOOD MORNING!!!

I'm late this morning due to FIL having another "episode" at midnight Time, and so we have been up off and on all night. Note; he never has episodes at 1 in the afternoon, or 5 pm even, always around Time Midnite!!! and we go to bed around 8:30!! We barely heard the phone and he had to call 3 times to get us awake! Grrr...Bang Head SoapBox Over!

So, what will today's trivia be about?. lemme see: Nites like these, we get ZERO chance to "sleep like a top":

Meaning: sleep soundly

Origin:

Similes of the 'like a' type usually relate some verb with a noun that possesses the property the simile is aiming to convey; for example, 'drink like a fish', 'go over like a lead balloon'. Why 'top', or why 'log' in the related term 'sleep like a log' for that matter?

Tops, or more correctly spinning-tops', were popular amusements in the days before children had access to toys requiring batteries. The British Museum has on display tops from Egypt, dating from around 1250 BC. When a top is spinning well the precessional effect causes its axis to remain stationary and it can appear to be still, i.e. 'sleeping'.

The expression 'sleep like a top' is quite old and is recorded from at least 1693, when it appeared in William Congreve's The Old Batchelour:

"Should he seem to rouse, 'tis but well lashing him, and he will sleep like a Top."

Incidentally, 'sleep like a log' apparently derives from the immobility of logs, like tops, although some have suggested it to derive from the sound of sawing being like the sound of snoring.

Now we can 'sleep tight' since the nightmare is over:

Meaning: sleep well

Origin:

'Sleep tight' is a very well-used phrase in many parts of the English-speaking world. It's common at bedtime in the form of the rhyme "good night, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite".

There are many meanings of the word 'tight' and, unsurprisingly, there are several theories going the rounds as to the origin of 'sleep tight'. One is that the phrase dates from the days when mattresses were supported by ropes which needed to be pulled tight to provide a well-sprung bed. This was the notion that was put forward on a 2008 BBC antiques show, when the presenter lay on an oak settle to demonstrate the support provided by the understringing and to confidently pronounce "hence the expression 'night, night, sleep tight'". This explanation seems unlikely, as it is the bed rather than its occupant that is tight and no one (in my experience) ever wishes furniture a good night's sleep. He would have had more luck had he opted to say that 'settle down to sleep' derives from 'settle' or 'seat' - which it does.

The phrase 'sleep tight' itself was common in the late 20th century, and there could hardly have been a better way of cementing any phrase into the popular consciousness than by Lennon and McCartney using it in the lyrics of a song at the height of Beatlemania. That's where it found itself, in Good Night on the White Album in 1968:

Now it's time to say good night, Good night. Sleep tight.

The 'don't let the bedbugs bite' part has prompted some to suggest that the 'tight' refers to the tightness of bedclothes, intended to keep bedbugs at bay. That's hardly likely, as bedbugs live in mattresses and wouldn't be avoided by tying bedclothes tightly. Also, '...bedbugs bite' is an extended version of the original 'sleep tight' bedtime message, which didn't start to be used until the mid-20th century - well after 'sleep tight' was first used.

'Sleep tight' didn't derive from either bedcoverings or ancient furniture and, in fact, isn't a very old expression at all. The first citation of it that I can find is from 1866. In her diary Through Some Eventful Years, Susan Bradford Eppes included:

"All is ready and we leave as soon as breakfast is over. Goodbye little Diary. ‘Sleep tight and wake bright,’ for I will need you when I return."

There aren't many other known citations until the early 20th century and the OED lists none until 1933, by which time the innerspring mattress had been invented and most mattresses were supported by metal straps or springs. This puts the phrase out of general circulation at the date that rope-strung beds were commonly used, which makes the rope-stringing origin unlikely at best.

Susan Eppes' line, with its clear link between 'sleep tight' and 'sleep well', leads us to the most probable explanation for the phrase. The word tightly, although not often used in this way now, means 'soundly, properly, well'. The earlier phrase 'tight asleep' derives from this meaning, as seen in this example from Marie Beauchamp's novel Elizabeth and her German Garden, 1898:

And once, when there was a storm in the night, she complained loudly, and wanted to know why lieber Gott didn't do the scolding in the daytime, as she had been so tight asleep.

'Tight asleep' just meant 'soundly asleep', or to put it another way 'fast asleep', and 'sleep tight' just means 'sleep soundly'.

AngelThe prayer candles will be lit around 9 Am. Angel

Make today a great day!!!

Evening all.  Just stopping in for a few moments before heading to bed.   I can't help but feel and pray for those in CT that lost their loved ones.  When I heard about it, I called my wife and told her to hug the kids for me, and when I got home, I wrapped all three of them up as tightly as I could.  I don't understand how a person can get that messed up and I know that there is a special place in the basement for him.  I know that many on here are people of faith and I also know I can't really ask this without getting wrist-slapped, but I'm going to.

Y'all, I ask you to agree with me in  prayer for those children and adults lost yesterday in Newtown, CT.  They all lost their lives far, far too soon and we know that this was not in accordance with His plan.

Ok, that's enough for me, don't want to offend anyone, but I had to get it off my chest and out there.  Can't really talk about MRR stuff when things like this are happening.

Goodnight all, try to see y'all tomorrow morn before heading out.

Good evening ...

I suspect millions of people have been watching the tragic news. I think many are crying in front of their TV's. How horrible. Kids were only 6 or 7. ..... The shooter was just 20 years old. How can somebody get so bad off in just 20 years? ......

I think this country is losing too many of its youth to tragic situations. ... I mentioned last week how our community here lost 4 young people in a bad collision on a country road. The rest of the story was they were doing things they should not have been doing in addition to speeding.

So it's good to see people working with our youth to divert them from trouble.

Ken .... Your model railroad club is an example. Looks like you welcome teens and share the hobby with them. Good for you and your fellow club members.

Ray ..... You too. I know you have continued working with BSA and other groups that have constructive activites for young people. Bravo to you.

Other diners are doing similar things.

Actually, some of the diners themselves are very young, and it is fantastic to have them aboard.

JP .... Good to see you here in the diner. WS makes good stuff, but I have not worked with that particular product. Good luck making a layout. I suggest doing one small section at a time.

Jeff ...... Sounds like Sundown Shops obtained a good supply of "raw matterial" and is not wasting time working on it.

Curt .... Glad you can be with grand kids, and hope all is good for them.

Galaxy .... That is a lot of meds. I pray you can somehow recover from the need for all of that. ... Thanks for keeping those candles lighted.

I getting back to my freight car weathering I started before getting the nasty flu/cold that kept me in bed several days.

I've been working on some freight cars today. I installed body mounted #5 Kadee couplers in #242 draft gear boxes on a Life-Like ICG flatcar and a Life-Like TOYS 'R' US boxcar. I also added #5's to an Athearn 62' tank car. I'll be putting #5's on a Tyco Erie 34' hopper when I mount a pair of #242 boxes on it.

I was tearing down a Model Power F2A when I chanced to look at the axle gears. I'll have to look at the gears in the C628 to be sure but they appear to be the same. If that's the case I'll have four wheelsets that'll fit the C628 that don't have pizza cutter flanges. I have a Model Power GP9 chassis around here somewhere that I can get the other two wheelsets from for the idler wheels. Only four axles on the C628 are driven.

I looked at the motor in a Bachmann F9A. It's a pancake motor, looks like from the early 90's and I have to say it's a complete wreck. It's twin in the other F9A is in great shape which is surprising since it is a pancake motor.

I'm toying with an idea about using the motor from the Model Power loco to replace the aging motor in the C628 or I may see if I can put an Athearn motor in it. Either way it'll be an improvement over the small 3 pole motor that's in it at present.

Well that's it for now. Time to call it a day. See y'all tomorrow.

Wow, slipping to the bottom of the page.

CAN'T let THAT happen!

Well, uneventful day, except as noted below I guess.

Typical dishes, laundry and then a few HOURS, yes hours, shredding papers and documents of importance no longer needed. I have put it off way too long! There is STILL a few more hours to do.Yes,hours. I tend to keep stuff like that way too long. But afte a year I think I can shred last december's nad this January's heat/light bill!  The credit card statemtents for a year or yaer and a half ago i can give up now.

My back is better today though I still move slowly to be sure nto to rack anything out of order.

Dinner was good.

**I found out yesterday and today that I am in the "top 20 customers" at my local pharmacy. In fact , I am in the top ten. In fact I am #7 of the top ten. I should say so, as my scripts cost about $14-$15 THOUSAND DOLLARS a year. Almost all filled there! So I got a thank you coupon to use in the store. Now they roll out the red carpet whenever I come in. The pharmacy regular day staff knows me very well, including almost all knowing my DOB, under which records are kept electronically now. the pharmacist on duty said she thought I had been in every day this week that she worked. I said I thought so too {I had a slot filled this week} , and that I must, because I am #7 top 20 customer. SHe said "you'll always be number one to me"...AW, SHUCKS!!! I blushed. BOY did I blush.  I'll bet she says that to all the old men.

SO, now that I am a "top 10", I feel kinda regal !

I am not only the "top ten" to MOH, but to the pharmacy as well.

too bad it doesn't come with money!

Well, on to the TV I guess then to beddy-poos and snuggles with cuddles {the cat}. {well, MOH too- but cuddles always gets betwixt and between us}

Good afternoon all...

My thoughts and prayers to those in need, especially the folks in Newtown CT, as well as those of us on these forumns who have family there.

Anyways, other than a back injury, I'm doing good. Monday evening, my back decided to pull a muscle in the lower portion, just above my right hip and send me to the floor. I didn't think it was serious at the time, until Tuesday morning when I went to shave and shower before going to work. I walked to the bathroom, with some pain, but ended up crawling back to bed cause the pain was so bad. Called my boss and told her I wasn't going to be in and that I'd let her know about the following day after a dr appt. The doc took me out of work until next Tuesday afternoon at the earliest. He also gave me some good drugs to help me out. So far, the back is doing well today except for some minor pain. Hopefully I can go back to work Tuesday after a follow-up w/ the doc.

So, I've gotten a ïtch" to build a layout. Of course, my girlfriend helped me get the ïtch" after a discussion about my desires for a layout, by telling me to build one. So now, I'm debating on how I want to go about building it and where in the house to put it. I've thought about getting one of the Woodland Scenic Mod-u-rail kits and seeing how that section comes out to give me a idea as to whether to proceed and use  that system or just go buy the lumber and materials and do it that way. Any thoughts? Has anyone on here used the WS system?

Well, I'm off for a bit. Need to get some food Dinner and take my meds.

Hope everyone has a good Saturday.

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017

Good Morning.

I’m not going to do my usual goofy truth stretching posting today. I have my opinions on why things are different now, but that will only bring arguments. My heart goes out to all those affected by yesterdays tragic events.

J.R.- I couldn’t remember just where you were located, but when I first heard the news, I thought of you and wondered if you were close. I couldn’t remember if you had grandchildren and I hoped….well let’s say I had a sinking feelinga and I hoped you lived elsewhere or at least that your family wasn’t involved. I’m sorry about the loss of your friends and I’m sure you probably knew some families of the students and faculty. The adults were bad enough, I hope you didn’t know any of the children. My prayers for you and your family during this time as well.

Mornin' everyone.

Zoe, I'll have a couple sour creame glazed donuts to dunk in the dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug you are going to bring me...Big Smile  Thank you Ma'am.

Rather dark and gloomy here in the Finger Lakes this morning...  Barry keeps sending his weather my way!  Guess that is due to the prevailing winds around this area of the country and since Barry is almost due west of me...

Got the rest of my Christmas shopping done this morning down at the SERRV Shop at church.  While I was there I checked with the guy who usually does the sound for the services to see how the Large Diaphragm Condenser mic I took over to him yesterday performed for the rehearsal.  He grinned and said it was great.

I'm still in shock over the tragedy in Connecticut yesterday.  Sure takes the wind out of people....  Keep thinking about my beautiful little Granddaughters and how horrible all of the town must feel!

I need to keep moving as I have much to get done today.

Good morning. It's 66° with 90% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a small chance of rain. The high will be 75°.

Today I plan to work on some freight cars I received in the mail yesterday. There appears to be about three dozen. There were four locos packed in with them. An IHC C628, a Model Power F2A and two Bachmann F9A's with pancake motors. After cleaning and servicing them I have three of them running. The fourth, a Bachmann F9A has a motor that's a hopeless piece of junk. That and some body damage it has would make it a good candidate for an abandoned loco.

There are four 34' hoppers I've taken an immediate interest in. Three are Athearn (PRR 220558, B&O 233507, Virginian 9502), the fourth is Tyco (Erie 4065). I'm also looking at an Athearn 62' tanks car (consolidated gas supply corp GATX 94378).

That's all for now.

Morning All,

Slept crummy last night. The grand kids (Tony 7 and Quentin 5) are coming over in about 30 minutes so Peggy can do some Christmas shopping for them. Something happened at the Foster Home this week and they were removed so they are living in their new home full time now.Big Smile. There are emotional and discipline issues that will have to be overcome, but did I say I have grand kids nowBig SmileBig Smile.

Not sure what is happening later today.

JR- I am glad your son is OK.

Lee- Hope your Mom is OK. Does Dorothy live in a bad neighborhood? Have fun working on your layout and be sure to take some pictures.

Ken- That area is on the list for change but I want to fix the tore up areas first. Having never used  foam before, if I were to go to a box store what kind of foam would I be looking for? What kind of paint can be used on it?

Well I hope everyone has a good day and prayers for those in need especially in CT.

 Morning, I think?

 Flo, coffee pleases.

I stayed up way to late last night, watched Captain America on Netflixs. Not a bad movie, far fetch, but not bad. Paying for it this morning.

Well, off to work. I am off Sunday so I may head to K-10 Model Trains. They are having there open house.

  See you after work.
