Evenin'!
Janie, just my usual cup of decaf, please. I'll be in the back by the wood stove staying warm.
Actually it is unusually warm here in the Finger Lakes for mid December... Got up to 51°F today. Too warm to get a good fire going in the stove, and too cold to be comfortable without it. I got a load of wash done and hung up, moved a couple loads of wood to the back porch, and did my treasurers report for the MLK Committee meeting tomorrow night. Been raining here for the last few hours. calling for 1/4" of the stuff. Been dark and gloomy all day and will be the same tomorrow they say.
Have a good and safe night! Prayers going out for a lot of people and things tonight!

I was busy today. I installed draft gear boxes and Kadee #5's on five freight cars (three Life-Like, one Bachmann, one unknown) and installed #5's on an Athearn B&O 34' ribbed side hopper. For now it's time to select which of these ten cars I'm going to use on the layout and put the others in a box for whatever fate awaits them. There are sixteen others waiting to be worked on still. That box will go in the closet for now. When I get more couplers and screws I'll bring it out again and pick up where I left off.Tomorrow I think my father and I will be doing some Christmas shopping. The time for that is up to him.Well it's time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Well, had dinner and was too tired in front of TV so went for nap, too wide awake in bed so got up.
I have the pulmonologist tomorrow, so it should be an easy appointment, except he will tell me the age old "lose weight" routine. I would if I could.Ten more shopping.
Wednesday is of course grocery shopping day!
Tonight my back is killing me only after 2.5-3 hours of being out shopping.
Hey get this; An Armored truck transferring them. tipped over and splilled SILVER BULLION BARS on the highway...RT 81!!! Teh Driver FELL ASLEEP and one guy suffered a broken leg! Guess he was sitting too close to the silver bars! I'd say that would break a bone or two.
UPS strikes again at not delivering a package to me..2 of them this week. They change the address as they think they know better where I live than I DO!!! I was NOT A HAPPY CAMPER calling them to correct their error! THe one package finally came form last week!!! It took them a whole week to FIND MY HOUSE!! I even GAVE THEM DIRECTIONS! AND we are on Google Earth, and GPS systems!!!. Then I get a USPS post card telling me they "can't find me"and to call again for another package!!! GRRRRR!!!
We will be having Christmas Dinner with some old friends onteh 30th. When we all have time for it.We are bring dessert...MOH's famous BLACK FOREST CAKE....MMMM...
Schools around here are tightening security, but claim they are already "secure" and visitors are kept in the office or escorted around IF they are let in. ANy body with a multi-bullet, high powered rifle can blast anywhere they want to get into though. Blast out some windows and climb right in. The thing that bugs me is the COPY CATs who do this, like the young man who did Cinnecticut. The Principal's family was from around here for awhile, and anothe lady was a grad from here. So we have "ties" to there.

Had Sloppy Joe's for supper. I will need the antacid later for sure.
Go back to w**k tomorrow. Friday a repair guy is coming to the house and Saturday MOH will probably have me drive her to Sarasota to pick up a part for her new quilting machine that just came in and I guess is too large to ship to the house.
I trouble shot the reverse loop again today and it still has a intermittent problem. I talked to my friend and he will come over on 1/5 to try to figure the problem out.
JeremyB- Sorry about the job.
JR- I checked the gaps and they are OK and I cleaned everything without any change. It was a good idea.
Ray- What is the life of the batteries in the Prius?

What a crappy day.......
I lost my job today, grant it I couldn't stand the place or most of the people but I went in and did my job and was nice to people and came home at the end of the day. The last couple weeks I have been quite sick, actually was at the doctors a couple times and was diagnosed with the flu so have been just wiped out. On top of that a couple Fridays ago we had a big fire in the garbage dumpster and I was the only one who got a fire extinguisher and put it out. Alot of smoke and was around the fire for longer then I should have been, so that didn't make my flu symptoms feel any better. So I go in today still feeling like crap and hacking my brains out and they tell me sorry we dont need you anymore. I didnt have to sign any papers or nothing, just out the door.
Am I really upset? aside from the small paycheck not really. I like working but that place was crap, I guess the reputation it has around town here is right. I will start looking right away for something else. Well off to look around.
Great work Packer!
Well, I've added Kadee #5's to nine cars and one loco. Eight of the cars were body mount conversions. Looks like the fun has to stop though as I'm getting low on couplers, spring plates and screws. Time to put the stuff away until I get more supplies, whenever that is. So far I've added couplers to an IHC Lehigh Valley C628 loco, Life-Like ICG flat car with containers, Athearn 62' tank car, Life-Like 40' TOY'S R US boxcar, Life-Like 34' covered hopper, Life-Like Chessie 100 ton hopper, Conrail 40' boxcar, Life'Like (Industrial Rail) Chessie 40' boxcar, Life-Like Santa Fe 40' boxcar, Bachmann Burlington 41' Hi-Cube boxcar (1972).
awesome job Packer I scrolled down and saw your BN loco fleet, needless to say I was feeling a slight tinge of jealousy with an amount of awe and respect.
grrrrr... grumble grumble grumble... I asked athearn if they were ever going to do their challengers in SP&S or NP, got told that they weren't. time to go look for a used challenger that doesn't cost nearly $500 that I can rename, renumber, and detail to the proper SP&S specs.
why am I suddenly on this kick saw a picture of an NP challenger when I went to the toppenish railroad museum and this video.

Don't you just love the "Parts Price Game" that all the auto manufacturers play I replaced a power antenna in my 97 Firebird this summer. It was $294.56 just for the part plus another $200 to install it. I bought the darned antenna but passed on the install. It took me all of 20 min to take the old one out and put the new one in. As always, the auto companies have no problem ripping you off from start to finish.
End of Rant for today
On the RR front, I've been making really good progress the last week or so. Getting lots done and with luck may even be able to run a train for track testing purposes by the end of the week. That is unless the silly season gets in the way.

Dark and gloomy out there this morning in the Finger Lakes... Barry, will you please keep the dark and gloomy stuff at your house?!?
Waiting for the month to close on my credit card (usually happens on the 18th. of the month) to be able to finish my Christmas Shopping. Went and put more than I like to have on it this month and to avoid paying interest I always pay it off in full each month. I can do it, but it will take some $$$ from some other payments I try to make. So tomorrow I will head out to a Finger Lakes winery to finish the Christmas Shopping... I always send a "care Package" to my son in Chicago with his years supply of decent wine. Other wise he ends up having to buy the imported stuff from Clownifornia or someplace even worse... (please note the sarcasm... have to be loyal to our local wineries. They do produce some great wines!)

Gary, you would think they would not want the house! I just used a on line Mortgage Calculator to see what kind of payments I should be able to get.
Owe $53,000.00
Taxes $2400.00
Insurances $1300.00
Interest 5% and that is still high!

Payment would be $658.11

Good morning. It's 59° with 98% humidity. It'll be somewhat cloudy with a high of 68°.Nothing on the schedule today. I may work on some freight cars later. There are a couple of Life-Like 40' boxcars I'm interested in. Santa Fe No. 8565 car #16927, Chessie System No. 8476 car #26621. There's also a 40' single door Conrail boxcar #269976, blue with black doors, manufacturer unknown.
Good Morning All,
36F and still rainy. Haven't watched much tv these last few as I just want the coverage (and all the newspeople here in Neewtown) to go away so we can start getting back to our quiet desperation. Things will never be the same but we can at least help our friends and neighbors deal with the new reality and come to grips with life as it is.
Did spend some time in the train room putting in drops and hooking up the buss under the layout. I used 21ga solid house wire for the buss this time and I'm soldering the drops to the buss. Used a wire stripper to displace the sindulation enough to wrap and solder and it goes fairly quickly if the soldering tip is kept clean of excess resin and solder.
I really like the weathering jobs you are doing out there. I for one will not start playing with the rolling stock until I get all the track functional or at least laid down .
Curt - have you checked the gaps on the reversing section? I had the same issue on the last layout asnd it turned out the track had moved slightly and bridged the gap on one rail. I fixed that by regaping the rail and filling the voids with gel c.a. that I then shaped to suit.
Time to get into the shop and make things happen. Catcfh Y'all later, J.R.

Ken- Sorry hoss. Hate to see anyone lose their home. Especially after the government sent so much money to the banks to avoid this. Too bad they can’t do more than just “encourage” the banks to do things to lower the payments.
Our bank, what, two years ago, called us and said they wanted to lower our interest rate on our home loan. We. Like Ken, still had a 8.7% interest rate and was 15 years into a thirty. They called us and offered, or rather insisted, we re-sign at 3.1 for 15 years. No closing, no fees no, no additional time, no nothing. Just the time to come and sign a stack of papers and walk out with a lower payment hence big savings. Should have taken the offer of 10 years. Still would have been cheaper than old payment. Now why can’t Bank of America do that for Ken? The Bank that did it for us was…..Bank of Springfield.
Ray- Yes we do get attached to our little furry friends.
Garry- Nice job on the weathering.
You too Vincent! Garry’s right. Sweet bird of youth will fly away before you know it and suddenly you’ll be 40 and wonder where the time went. Then, while you’re trying to figure that out and remembering the things you’ve done, not done and wish you had….and hadn’t, they start singing Happy 50th birthday. Spend your time wisely and remember, If I’d a known I was gonna live this long I’d a took better care of myself, is not something you reeeeally want to be repeating.
OK. What to do today. Hmm. Well, first is Church stuff naturally, then I could try to finish my office today. Yes I got a couple things out and thrown away yesterday, but as soon as I started, well not as soon as I got started, but pretty close, about noon (had a few minor odd jobs to do first like a couple light bulbs and of course the shelf)…..Brenda appeared in the doorway. “watcha doin?” I said I was cleaning my room like I’d been trying to for some time. She said “oh”. Then proceeded to tell me she wanted to go into town to eat and stop by Walgreens for some smelly soap for the grandkids stockings before it got too late. I said Ok figuring I am hungry, and how long could this take? Hour, hour and a half total? (snort) more like 4 to 4 ½. She neglected to mention a few other places she wanted to go too while we were in town, so needless to say not much got done. She asked me last night as I was leaving to watch Ted, I thought you were gonna clean up your office. Cheaper to keep’er, just keep saying cheaper to keep’er.

I was watching the game last night but fell asleep in the middle of the 3rd quarter. It was a rout at that point though. IDK why I woke up so early, but I'm not tired...
Garry, Thanks for the compliments. This year's gone by pretty quick. As for saving I've had an IRA that I've been putting into ever since I was 18. I'm going to call the company that does it to see if I can get it to be gold-backed. BTW, I like that batch of cars.
BN24, Thanks. I can't really take the credit for coming up the rustoleum white thing. It was kind of mix of Jeff's (using bigger cans of less expensive paint) and Robby P's (thinned white for fades) ideas. The only issue I have with it is it takes about a week to fully dry; but I have another kind of thinner that may change it to a few hours. I think I have some pictures somewhere of cars I did with an airbrush following Pelle Soeburg's recomendation. I forgot the issue, but he was working on a Rock Island ACF 2-bay covered hopper. There's a bit more of my cheap weathering in here:http://s275.photobucket.com/albums/jj301/PackerPhan66/Train%20stuff/
Karl, thanks for the compliments.
JaBear, I had 2 of those. They were made by Life-like, but my 2 were from Industrial rail (who just rehashed the life-like trainset cars).

GOOD MORNING!!!
Today is Monday DECEMBER 17th, 2013!!!
Sometimes in our daily struggles, we "Meet our Waterloo", SO:
Meaning:
Arrive at a final decisive contest
Origin:
This phrase refers to the 1815 battle outside the Belgian town of Waterloo in which Napoleon Bonaparte was finally defeated by forces commanded by the Duke of Wellington. The term Waterlooquickly became synonymous with anything difficult to master. It was referred to as such the year after the Battle of Waterloo by another English hero - Lord Byron, in a letter to Thomas Moore:
"It [Armenian] is... a Waterloo of an Alphabet."
Yet another English icon, Arthur Conan Doyle, was the first to refer to someone meeting their Waterloo, in Return of Sherlock Holmes, 1905:
"We have not yet met our Waterloo, Watson, but this is our Marengo."
This refers to the Battle of Marengo in Italy, in which Napoleon 's forces were surprised by an Austrian attack and came close to defeat.
And now for the Old Song, Waterloo by Stonewall Jackson, written by WILKIN, MARIJOHN / LOUDERMILK, JOHN D. :
Chorus: Waterloo Waterloo where will you meet your Waterloo Every puppy has his day everybody has to pay everybody has to meet his Waterloo Song: Now ol' Adam was the first in history with an apple he was tempted and deceived Just for spite the devil made him take a bite And that's where ol' Adam met his Waterloo Waterloo Waterloo...Little General Napoleon of France tried to conquer the world but lost his pants Met defeat known as Bonaparte's reterat and that's where Napoleon met his Waterloo Waterloo Waterloo...Now a feller who's darling proved untrue took her life but he lost his too Now he swings where the little birdie sings And that's where Tom Dooley met his Waterloo Waterloo Waterloo...
If you like the ABBA version: "Waterloo"
Thank you for this stroll down amnesia lane...
The prayer candles will be lit as long as we are home...
Have a great day!!!

Near a cornfield in Indiana...
Good evening. ........ We watched the entire memorial service in CT on TV. Emotional.
Here is the results of my recent weathering project. It is the 16 freight cars on 4 tracks closest to the camera. The 5 cars back at the flour mill are from past weathering projects. Next, I'll put away that messy stuff and clean up the work table. I have many more cars yet to weather at later times.
Vincent...... I'm gald you are doing so well. I think everybody has to play the hand they were dealt, and you are a real master playing your hand. Your modeling skills are very remarkable. If you don't mind advise from an older guy, I must say, the years will go by much faster than you can imagine, and so you must be careful to avoid wasting time. Also, I advise all young people to save their money and invest it wisely because it will be needed when you are older.
Ken .... Wow! 7%! That is a burden. There must be more the bank can do for you.
JR ...... Thinking and praying for you people in CT.

Evening gang!
Just a cup of decaf please Cloe,, gotta turn in soon.
Just stopped by to wet my whistle. Been a busy weekend, with all the upcoming holiday commotion, we got more lights outside than ever before, running trains around the wishing well out front, and now, running trains in the garage, which got finished today,
The grandsons are coming up Saturday. Wont they be surprised to see what Grandpop has in his garage. Something Santa dropped off early for the boys. Grandpop IS one of Santa's helper, dontcha know! Sunday I'll put it in the back of my truck and take it to their house.
I'm glad I got that much done today, cuz yesterday was the company Christmas party! See, I had to work yesterday til 3, go home, shower and get ready, then drive an hour and 15 minutes west of here to attend the party. (I live 15 minutes away from work) 2 of out other locations are an hour and a half from here. They said we'd have the party in the middle so more folks would attend. Some middle eh?? Oh well,,didn't matter anyway, when the owner started handing out Christmas cards, with checks inside!! Still, got home in the wee hours, slept til almost noon!

I made a short video today of the test run of the C628 with it's new motor. I pulled out the small 3-pole motor Mehano put in at the factory. I had to cut an opening in the frame to allow the new motor to sit low and level in the chassis. The new motor came from an Athearn SW1000 switcher that was in the closet for a couple of years. It has a 5-pole skew wound armature and runs much smoother than the old motor did. I have a decoder for it but until I get a DHWH 9-pin connector the decoder might as well be on Mars.Anyhow, here's the C628 TEST RUN.I didn't do anything else on the layout today. Time to call it a day. See y'all tomorrow.
Evening guys
I've been too tired after work the past few to even stop by. It's been hell at work; extremely busy with most of my co-workers runing out back to smoke instead of helping out the other co-workers (the ones who actually work; pretty much just me, Brooke, and another girl). I think I ticked everyone off when I suggested no more smoke breaks (unless we are slow). I just said that because I was tired of being the one doing 2-3 people's work. Brooke has the same feelings on the smoke breaks as me, and she smokes (and she's started teasing me every now and then).
In other work news, it turns out one of my Managers is actually a train nut. He has circuits of lionel in his attic, and doesn't switch.
I've been working on my trains today. I tried to light the beacon in one of my P2K GP38-2s. It's kinda like the newer atlas Gp38s as far as the cab is built. Which makes it kinda hard to have a lit beacon in the right place. Guess I'll light it in the wrong spot.
BN24, weathering doesn't have to be expensive to have excelent results. Check these cars out:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj301/PackerPhan66/Train%20stuff/6-15-11weathering002.jpgThe BNFE refer was done with a cheap set of pastel crayon sticks, an old make-up brush, a stiffer broad brush (part of some bag that had a bunch of them), a can of valspar clear flat, a can of flat brown valspar, and a can of rustoleum rust metal primer. I sprayed the trucks and underframe with the flat brown, the wheels with the rusty metal primer, and the body with the clear flat. Then I scraped the pastel sticks with an X-acto blade onto either a paper towel or the model. I kinda forgot what exactly I did with the powders, but when I was happy with the results I dusted it with the clear flat.
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj301/PackerPhan66/Hiatusstuff003.jpgThis one I just used my airbrush on. Aside from the underframe and wheels being painted the same as the above car. I mixed up a little bit of rustoleum flat white with some laquer thinner (and I mean a little, I went by sight but I'd say it was an 8:1 ratio of thinner to paint; it looks like really watered down milk.) Then I lightly sprayed the car with it evenly. I like this method for dark or grey colored cars, it kinda washes out light cars (like yellow).
I recently picked up weathering with cheap acrylics for washes and rust spots. I'm still working on it.
Garry, it's hard for me to fathom; but all the shooters in the last 3 shootings (the washington mall, conneticut, and the theather one) were all in my age group. I wonder if this will affect my 2nd ammendment rights? Also the shooter in the school shooting also had the same mental disorder as me. I turned out pretty good though (at least I think so).
The past few days have been busy, but very productive. We got all the Christmas decorations in the house put up, including our Dept. 56 "Dickens Village", which covers the 2 bookcases in the living room plus all along the one wall in the dining room. It's an awful lot of work getting all that stuff out of the attic by going up and down 2 flights of stairs. Especially now that I have to do it by myself. It's impossible for the wife to help with her ankle in the shape it is. All that's left to do now is the tree itself.
Today we went railfanning and caught 6 trains in about 2 hours. And finally, I got to see one of Norfolk Southern's special paint jobs. It was the "Honoring Our Veterans" which they put into service in November. I have yet to catch any of the heritage units. Sorry about the quality of the photo, but it was very overcast and it seems my camera might be going.

Dennis- When DCC works right it is great, when it doesn't well.....I will leave it at that. Good luck with your problem. If my problem is still there after Christmas I will have a friend from the club come over and give it the once over (has electrical background). Take care.
Curt WebbI don't know if it is a Digitrax AR-1 issue or not.
Now you've got me wondering Curt, I just finished laying all the rail on my layout except the yard and the mine branch line and I've started the task of wiring my first DCC powered layout. Your mention of the AR1 problem makes me go "What have I got myself into"?
Got the programming track all wired up, watched the DigiTrax video on programming 3 times and still can't get it to work. Maybe my Son in Law will do it for me when the come for Christmas... Unless of course I luck out before then
Currently soldering the drop wires for the main buss. Slow going I'm finding but then if I take my time and do it right the first time....
Cheers
Dennis
Jeffery, you never cease to amaze me with your ability to make a new improved locomotive from you "spare parts" bin, especially with numb hands . Just goes to show ya what a person can overcome if they want to!
Waiting on supper. Chicken is in the oven.
Today was a good day but also a frustrating day. The good was I was able to rig the Tortoise (under the layout) to the side of the switch and rig a heavy duty throw wire to the switch on top the layout that will be covered by scenery.
The frustrating was running trains in the reverse loop. Last week when I tested it there were no problems at all in either direction. Now there seems to be shorting and stalling at both ends where the reverse loop joins the main but at random times, in other words sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Direction (reverse in or forward in) does not make a difference. I don't know if it is a Digitrax AR-1 issue or not.
Ken- Sorry to hear about your situation and wish you and YOH the best.
Jeff- Looking good.
Hope everybody has a good night and prayers for those in need.
