 Flo, Beer Pleases

Monon Guy, Jim I heard about the exploding house, I was relived (sorry for the ones that lost there life's) it was on the south side of Indianapolis. I still have friends there, but they all live on the north-side.

Curt, I love snow, so snow and trains is a plus. Not John Boy level of snow (I saw it was a miss type) of 12 to 16 feet! But still like never less. Only thing I hate about winter? Here in the Train / Snake / Garage Room, I am either hot, or cold. Never can hit the perfect setting.

On the greed side, people buy tires when it snows! Whistling

Hiya gang!

Just an RBF for me tonight Cloe my dear, be heading to bed soon. Been a busy day here. Me & the youngin got the gutters cleaned out, and found a few loose shingles that needed attending to, along with a few odds & ends outside that needed fixin.  So with that done, I spent some time outside with the new camera photographing flowers and trees and the neighbors dogs. That is until Nascar came on, then spent a few hours through dinner watching the fireworks in Phoenix. Surprise Wow, somebody is gonna be paying some fines tomorrow!!Crying

In the middle of all this I tried to paint a body shell. The airbrush wasn't working right, the main valve was sticking. I disassembled it and cleaned it, and as I was reassembling it suddenly the one screw got very easy to turn. Opps,Embarrassed I had sheared off the main jet!!! AngryAngryAngry Oh boy, internet search for parts only got me the part #, now tomorrow I have to call Binks for the parts!

I also took a few pics down the basement!

2 shots, same engine,,,,,,not too shabby if I say so myself!

Well, better get to bed soon, tomorrow is a holiday.  Gubmint employees will be out in force tomorrow, making my workday more hectic than normal!!Hmm

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a decaf...  Have blood work in the morning so  will be late getting in for breakfast.

Karl, nice photos...  I bet you love your new camera!

I actually spent some time in the train rooms today...  Painted the earth on a strip of landscape behind the tracks, and found that one of my torti didn't have the DCC power or the wire to the frog installed...  It is a torti that has been in place several years and I couldn't figure out why I never finished the wiring on it.  So I hooked it up, turned on the track power and immediately found a dead short...  I did a check around the block to see if there was anything on the rails causing the short, and finally removed one of the wires for the DCC at the Torti...  Short still there.  Unhooked the other wire from DCC and the short goes away.  Hmmmmm!  I finally pulled the tortoise out of the turnout, and looked it over and compared to another one I had sitting around...  Duh!  I had the wires wrong right at the solder connections on the tortoise itself.  Got out the soldering iron and corrected it.  Checked it again, and it works fine.  Just need to reinstall it.  Of course it is in a bear of a place to get to.  At least all the screw holes are there, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

I guess I will call it a day...  See you tomorrow after I get home from the lab.

Prayers for all in need!

Well I did it again! When I was helping get my mother up off the floor earlier today I ripped my ankle open, again. It's not as bad as last time but bad enough. Looks like I'll be down for another few days.

Been watching some old movies on VHS tapes today. One was 'Atomic Train'. It's got a lot of flaws and inaccuracies and visual flubs but it's fair entertainment. One of those flaws is having a free rolling runaway train 300 miles from Denver rolling downhill toward the city. Not possible since most of the tracks run UPHILL toward the city. The train would have to be going away from the city to be rolling downhill. Another is that the trains brakes went away completely when the air system failed. I guess nobody ever told Hollywood that the brakes would lock up when the air brakes were compromised. It seemed that everyone forgot about the manual brakes as well. Did they not know how to turn a brake wheel? And I never knew Denver's skyline looked so much like Vancouver.

Well it's time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

GOOD MORNING!!!

HAPPY VETERAN's DAY {Observed} Thanks Once more to all those who serve{d} and will serve.

We often use the phrase "knock on wood", so:

Meaning:

This phrase is used by people who rap their knuckles on a piece of wood hoping to stave off bad luck. In the UK, the phrase 'touch wood' is used - often jokingly by tapping one's head. The phrases are sometimes spoken when a person is already experiencing some good fortune and hope that it will continue - for example "I've been winning on every race - touch wood".

ORIGIN:

The derivation may be the association that wood and trees have with good spirits in mythology, or with the Christian cross. It used to be considered good luck to tap trees to let the wood spirits within know you were there. Traditions of this sort still persist in Ireland.

The British version of the phrase - 'touch wood', predates the American 'knock on wood' and was itself preceded by a Latin version  - 'absit omen', meaning 'far be that omen from us'. This dates from at least the early 17th century, when it is quoted by John Heywood in his collections of proverbs. It isn't clear when 'touch wood' began to be used as a token of good fortune but it must have been by 1850, when the academic correspondence magazine Notes and Queries published this:

There probably is some old English expression for averting evil, but it does not come to mind; "I touch wood," "Bar omen," "Bar ill-luck," seem clumsy.

'Knock on wood'  is known from the early 20th century; for example, The Syracuse Herald, February 1905:

Neglecting to knock on wood may have been responsible for the weather's unseemly behaviour today

Along those lines, MURPHY'S LAW May come into play with the mention of misfortune:SO

Meaning:  The so-called law is usually expressed as 'If anything can go wrong, it will'

ORIGIN:

Murphy's Law parallels two other common terms for what is essentially the same pessimistic idea - Sod's Law and Finagle's Law. Of these three, Murphy's Law is by far the more commonly used. The notion that 'if anything can go wrong, it will' is the simplest version of a notion that has been expressed in numerous ways. Many of these pre-date 'Murphy':

- Once a job is botched, any attempts to fix it make it worse. - Bread always falls buttered side down. - Whatever can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time, in the worst possible way.

The list of names for the supposed phenomenon is also arbitrarily long and, as well as the above 'laws', includes: The Fourth Law of Thermodynamics; Newton's Fourth Law of Motion; The Inverse Midas Touch, etc, etc.

In the use of Murphy, Sod and Finagle and also the less common Reilly's Law, the coiners of these names seem to have settled on a theme which calls on perceived negative allusions to the Irish. There is, in fact, nothing to link any of those names to anyone Irish, but they certainly sound as though there could be.

In reality, Murphy is commonly thought to be Captain Edward A. Murphy, an American aerospace engineer, who performed studies on deceleration for the U.S. Air Force in 1949. During the experiments, in which he had a less than cordial relationship with other members of the research team, he noted that if things could be done wrongly, they would be. In subsequent interviews, various team members have stated that they referred to the notion as 'Murphy's Law'. The expression wasn't put into print by them at the time though and the earliest citation of it is in Anne Roe's book The Making of a Scientist, 1952:

"There were a number of particularly delightful incidents. There is, for example, the physicist who introduced me to one of my favorite 'laws,' which he described as 'Murphy's law or the fourth law of thermodynamics' (actually there were only three last I heard) which states: 'If anything can go wrong it will.'"

Other sources have questioned that the Murphy in the name was an actual person. In his memoire Into Orbit, 1962, John Glenn states that:

"We blamed human errors like this on what aviation engineers call 'Murphy's Law'. 'Murphy' was a fictitious character who appeared in a series of educational cartoons put out by the U.S. Navy... Murphy was a careless, all-thumbs mechanic who was prone to make such mistakes as installing a propeller backwards."

The case for Edward A. Murphy being the source is fairly strong, but perhaps not quite 'beyond all reasonable doubt'.

Sod and Finagle certainly weren't real people. Sod's Law isn't known until later and the first example of it that I can find is from The New Statesman, October 1970:

"Sod's Law... is the force in nature which causes it to rain mostly at weekends, which makes you get flu when you are on holiday, and which makes the phone ring just as you've got into the bath."

This is a stronger variant of Murphy's Law, using the expletive 'sod' for accentuation. The term is, of course, short for 'sodomite', although the word had weakened into a general non-sexual term of abuse by 1970 - along the same lines of 'bugger'.

Finagle's Law follows a similar pattern. Finagle has been used in the USA, as a verb meaning 'to obtain a result by trickery; to deceive; to wangle'. A finagler is recorded in the American Dialect Society's Dialect Notes, 1922 as:

"One who stalls until someone else pays the check"

Soon afterwards (1926), Harold Wentworth listed it in the American Dialect Dictionary as 'US political cant.

The term probably had its origin in England. The English Dialect Dictionary lists the words fainaigue and feneague - meaning 'to cheat'.

The first example I have of 'Finagle's Law' in print dates from The Indiana Gazette, April 1979, although there are assertions that it dates from the 1940s. There's some evidence to show that Finagle's Law, while no doubt having been influenced by Murphy's Law, is not merely the same notion under another name. Finagle's Law is more often applied specifically as a spoof version of the Second Law of Thermodynamics and is stated as 'The perversity of the Universe tends towards a maximum'. This pseudo-science background also applies to 'Finagle's Constant' - a mythical mathematical constant which is added to one side of an equation to obtain a result when the facts don't match the theory.

Good Morning All:

Jeff you need to be careful with that ankle they don’t make spares.

It was really nice out yesterday so Katje and I walked 4 miles; normally we only walk 1 mile and she was worn out at the end of the walk.  I stopped out at LHS and picked up a copy of Classic Trains, they have an article on the B&O 2-8-8-2’s that ran out here hauling coal across the 1.75% grade to the docks.

Today reality sets in; it’s the middle of November so we will drop back to freezing all day today and over night again.

Lunchtime in Germany!

Chloe, I´ll have a Barry-sized burger, fries and a mug of coffee, please!

My Internet connection was down all morning, so I used the time to take a second look at some of the structures. Some of them just weren´t looking right, so I looked at some pictures we had taken during a visit to one of our coastal towns years back. Those were the days before digital photography ... Whistling

While some of the buildings were fine, I had to redo those gable-houses again. When I prepare the drawings, I always have the materials I can use in mind. In the 18.th century, merchants usually displayed their wealth by having highly ornamented houses. I previous drawings, I kind of left that out, not knowing how to model all those stucco ornaments. To cut things short, I have found a way, but I won´t be telling you until I start construction. The solution is so simple I am a little ashamed to tell it now... Whistling

This is what the houses now look like:

Each one will be in a different color, from light blue to a light pink and yellow.

Incorporated into the plan, it looks like this:

I hope to be able to buy some of the materials I need at the train show coming Friday.

Y´ all have a good´ un!

My Internet connection is playing hide and seek today... Thumbs Down

Flo, coffee and a slice of that pecan pie, please.

Slowly, I am turning into an architect, designing 18th century houses. It´s fun!

The color pic shows a little more detail:

There is a pun to all those names:

Optikermeister Ch. Augendübler = Ch. Eyeplugger, Optometrist

Notariat Dr. B. Stecher = Dr. B. Riber, Public Notary

Gewürzkontor H.C. Pepperkorn = H.C. Pepperkorn, Peppers & Spices

K.-U. Lagerfeld,  Feine Damenmoden = K.-U. Lagerfeld, Exquisit Lady´s Wear & Garments

OK, puns usually don´t translate well, but at least I gave it a try!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a waffle with maple syrup please. Thanks.

Colder today but not windy. Rained a lot yesterday.

Not much going on here othern the start of clean the house up project. Only have a room to carpet and Brenda to decide whether she wants her room carpeted or wood. She’s changed her mind a few times so far and I’ll just be patient. Basically for all practical purposes, the remodel is done. Yeah

Morning All,

Not much happening down here. Putting off getting up and sweeping the floor. Later MOH and I are going to a steak house here that has free meals for veterans todayDinner. I think I will also play around some more with the TT controller to see if I can move it manually other than in program mode. I go back to w**k tomorrow and the temps will be in the 80's so it will be busier than last week.

Hope everyone has a good day and prayers for those in need.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe just a cup of Dark roast coffee please...  Had breakfast downtown this morning.

When over to the Medical Group and waited in line to see the Vampire, then headed out to Water Street Cafe downtown where I had... a #2 Special, eggs over easy, bacon, home fries, and sour dough toast along with 3 cups of their excellent fresh brewed diner coffee.  While I was in there, I look up and standing next to me was one of my favorite students from way back when.  She is the daughter of the lady who owns Water Street Cafe.  The daughter is a restaurateur as well and has a restaurant a block down and across the street from Water Street Cafe.  She was one of the cutest students I ever taught, and still is. Water Street Cafe was packed this morning as they give free meals to all Veterans up to 11AM today!

Other than some gathering of info for the MLK Committee so we can finalize the 501c3 stuff and some local division, NMRA items, I may get to do some serious "Working on the Railway" today.

Jeffrey, be careful with the ankle problem.  I would hate to see it get infected on you.

Ulrich, good to see you planning a layout.  Hope it all goes well for you!

Later!

Good morning. It's 50° with 90% humidity. It's mostly cloudy with a small chance of rain. The high will be 65°.

Nothing special planned for today. My intention is to stay off my feet as much as possible. I don't need to make things any worse than they are already, so no moving around unless absolutely necessary. I have a lot more movies that need watching so I'd best get started.

Good morning! Chloe I'd like a cheese bagel with cheesy scrambled eggs, a couple of hot sausage links, a blueberry muffin, and sliced potato.

I worked late last night, so my coworker and I could get a backlog of paperwork done. Taking it easy today, I'll likely read  until I have to work at 3pm. Had Saturday off and treated myself to a dinner of Thai food and a good micro-brew.

On the MR front, I just picked up a Walthers B60b and I'll number it for one I saw in Strasburg. This one has painted grab irons which I much prefer over the unpainted ones those I built before had.

Good Morning,

I'm off today as Remebrance Day is a civic holiday in this province so as it fell on a Sunday, we get today off instead.

CDN Dennis, I recognize the location of that railcar photo. It is in the yard of the GWWDRR, the Greater Winnipeg Water District Railway. It is a short line owned by the city that was built to costruct the viaduct from Shoal Lake to Winnipeg, about 100 miles or so in about 1912.  The museum is actually at the Union Station.

A lazy day here. No white stuff to shovel as we employ elves to do that. They really have upgraded their equipment and used a Bobcat yesterday to clear our drive. I might do more work on that freight station or run some HO trains. I have the U2g hooked up to a short consist of headend cars, mostly express reefers, but it derails at one spot on occasion. I just can't seem to see why except that I know that loco is very picky about trackwork.

I recently bought a new camera too. It is a Lumix FZ200. Time to start reading the manual.

Have a good day,

CN Charlie

Hi Guys,

Just about to get ready for work Sad.

Seem like about this time last Friday I was sitting here saying I was going to work on the layout on the weekend, but I didn't. I haven't really had the drive and ambition lately to start anything and every time I go in the layout room or the shop to work on something I end up walking out only a few minutes later. All I did was lay around on Saturday and play video games on the PC and PS3. I spent all day Sunday outside cleaning up the yard and cleaning gutters and basically finishing up all the autumn outdoor activities as it was beautiful out, probably the last of the warm days this fall. Well I'm off to grab something to eat before I go. Talk to you guys later tonight or tomorrow.

One of those rare weekends with no MR activity.  On Saturday, I joined about 10 other old friends out at another friends farm about 40 miles out of town for a 4 hour blastathon with many various weapons into his giant berm he made up as a backstop.  Beautiful sunny day at about 70 degrees.  Lots of Gunsmoke and noise for about 3 hours.

We, then, had our usual evening cookout on his large grill.  Steaks, burgers, hot dogs and other artery clogging delights consumed with the gusto of a hound dog.  Followed by a movie "War of the Worlds" (latest release), projected on a large screen.  All in all, a great day of fellowship, B.S.ing and venting spleen.

Sunday I had to clean 9 of my weapons (good for about 2 hours) and finally reloading at the RCBS bullet press the 45 long colt, 45-70, and 458 magnum rounds consumed yesterday. (3 hours)

My shoulder is still a bit sore (Monday) from the pounding, mostly from the 20 rounds of 458 magnum I fired.  I swear, that rifle kills on one end and mames on the other.  I'm glad this activity is scheduled among our geezers shooting group only twice a year.

Now its back to work and trying to shoehorn in some HOn3 activities before bed in the evning.

 Afternoon Dinners!

Why Thank You Flo, the beer is on the house? Free beer for the Vet's tonight, that works!

Odd humming coming from outside of the house? Stopped the trains 3 times to make sure it was not coming from the layout.

Curt I thought about going to Golden Corral, that the last places I should go with me watching my blood sugar. Just cannot tell my wife, she is all-wise ready to Dinner out!

Got called from work last night, was told to turn in my keys today! No I was not canned!  Seems I am being sent to another store, the South Kings Highway store in St Louis. Fine with me! I was there during my so called training and it is a busy store! I sort of hope it is permanent at this point. Yes, it is a farther drive, around 23 miles, but the store I am in cannot support 3 counter people.

Spent most of the day scanning and printing stuff for Bank Of Stupid!  Bang Head Got two more packets (1 For Maryville IL, 1 For Collinsville IL) yes, they still have it listed under two different address!  Plus I had the same stuff picked up from the house a few months ago! Bang Head

So, I am making copy's for both packets (got to keep the idiot's happy) and I am faxing everything as well! What do you want to bet that Bank Of Stupid says they did not get them!  SoapBox This as only be going on for, what 4 years now? Sigh

 See you all later.

Looks like I got TOP so order what ever you like in the diner folks. It's on me. Wink

Ken what a GREAT picture!! Takes me back to my youth when Steam ruled and that is exactly the way it looked where I grew up. Thanks for the memory refresher.

Well folks, it's been quite a whirlwind weekend for me. If you remember, I have been working and working on getting the inside of our 4 season room (AKA - Sun room) finished. I finally got all the painting done and all the window trim done. Took too long by my personal standards but then I don't work as fast as I used to.

Saturday morning I went to Home Depot and bought 2 sets of verticals for the twin patio doors and two roman shades for the other two windows. In the afternoon, I drove down to Calgary to pick up my Digitrax order and drove back home after parting with $1100 in cash because the fellow I ordered it from only accepts cash. Mind you, by dealing with him, I saved about $300 due to his low over head (works out of his home - cash only ) so I guess it's worth the hassles.

Today I installed the blinds which is a job I loath but somebody had to do it. Of course I had to cut 3 inches off the  verticals so that made the cheese a little more binding. They are up at any rate Indifferent

Tonight I finally got to sit down and look at what I'd bought in my Digitrax order. Let me just say that at this moment in time I'm wondering if I was crazy deciding to go DCC. I intimidates the daylights out of me now that I've got it. Oh yes, one other thing.... I seem to have ordered two radio/infrared transeiviers   and I only need one plus I ordered 2 auto reversers with four on each so now I can have 8 reversing loops. Wrong part number Embarrassed Oh well,

So, that has been my weekend. Oh ya, as for carpeting, I said to heck with it and I'm going to let the pros install it. For the price they charge, it's worth it to me.

NOW I can get to work on the layout again at LONG LAST. Yes

Prayers for all in need. Time to go to bed!

Evening All,

Sitting here watching Trains & Locomotives. This episode is on a steam fest in 1990 in Sue's neck of  the woods. Other than that not much going on. I go back to w**k tomorrow so I will post on Friday.

I have decided what I am doing track wise on the layout. It's going to be a fairly major project  like when I changed the back side of the layout. The thing I dread the most is I will have to take down 2 PL signalsSad. The money for the project will come from my last 2 items that were sold on Ebay.

Our work shift bid request came out today for Jan-May 2013. I have to figure out what I want to request ad get it in. It's due next Monday.

Ken- Great PicBig Smile. Thanks for posting it.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Been watching some old George Sanders movies from the late thirties, early forties today. The Saint's Double Trouble, The Saint Takes Over, The Saint Strikes Back. I don't expect you young guys to know who George Sanders was. The older guys will likely know. Other than that I didn't do much of anything except approving some posts for the forums, deleting a couple of ad posts and doing some other mod duties.

Well time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just my usual cup of decaf please.  I can sure use it right now.  Damp and cold around here at the moment.  Too warm to light the wood stove, and too cold without turning the heat up to be comfortable.

Had some excitement here in the neighborhood tonight.  Just after suppertime as I was doing a crossword puzzle, I looked out the window and saw a pickup truck come down the street.  He got right in front of my house, turns on his flashing Blue Fireman's light, slams on his brakes, and does a u-turn at the intersection out front.  Then he roars back up the street...  Then there was not one, not two, but three big firetrucks come down my street syreens-a-blarin' and all kinds of red emergency lights and stuff.  They were fo9llowed by about 30 or so more pickem'up trucks an cars with them blue lights all flashing.  Figured this must be something big...  Glad they weren't visiting me!  Anyhoo, about 5 minutes later they all came down the street with no syreens, flashing lights of any color, and some disappointed gawkers following and bringing up the rear...  Whatever it was, it must not have amounted to much...  For that I'm thankful.

Barry, I asked Manét and he swears he doesn't know anything about any kittie named Spring playing with your laptop...  He has volunteered to investigate the matter though.  He is all packed:

He won't pick at your keys, but he likes to sleep on them instead...,.,

I got a few little items done in the train rooms today.  Continued building an elevated track that will climb from the yard to the mountain I have been doing to make a return loop on that end of the layout.  Did a bit more plaster cloth work and coated some done yesterday with a coat of diluted Joint compound...  Oh!  And I spent an hour an a half trying to get the %&#! tortoise machine back ion place under the turnout!  I did eventually get it but what a pain!  Got to use a lot of those words my Mommy said she would wash my mouth out with soap for using...

Have a great night all!  Prayers for those in need!
