Morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD MORNING!!!

HAPPY VETERAN'S DAY and a BIG THANK YOU for serving!

"Laid Out in Lavender"- ever wonder where that phrase comes from? we most often use it to mean we criticised or verbally chastised someone...but that can not be confirmed:

Meaning: Prepared for burial. The phrase has also been used to mean 'show something in the best possible light'. There are also reports of its use as meaning 'to criticize or condemn', but that usage can't be confirmed {at least not form Old English origins}

Origin:

The allusion is clearly to the practice of strewing lavender or other strong smelling herbs near dead bodies to mask their smell. The term was preceded by the much earlier phrase 'laid up in lavender'. This refers to the storage of clothes etc. with lavender to keep them fresh and free from insect damage - a precursor to mothballs. The practise was referred to in Robert Greene's, A quip for an upstart courtier, 1592. The phrase first printed in A new dictionary of the terms ancient and modern of the canting crew, 1690:

"Layd-up-in Lavender, when any Cloaths or other Moveables are pawn'd or dipt for present Money."

Laid out in lavender may or may not have derived from that earlier phrase. Either way it is an American coinage and isn't widely used elsewhere. The earliest citation of it that I've found is from the New York newspaper The Syracuse Herald, May 1926, in a book review:

"Now here is a regular detective story. It begins with a dog fight and winds up with the whole family laid out in lavender." [i.e., dead]

 Morning All

 Flo, Coffee Pleases!

To all my fellow Vets, thank you for your services.

JR It is a sad fact, but larger company's today real don't places a lot of value in there employes. "After all, we are just another brick in the wall" I will be calling the HR department when they are open.

Go in today at 8:45 to open, far as I know I will be the only opener this morning. Got to get in early to get the store up and running. In other words, make the coffee! Whistling

Have about 15 minutes before I have to start to get ready for work, guess I will run the trains.

 See you all tonight!

Morning, all.

Wow, what a crazy night last night. There was a gas explosion in a subdivision 3 miles from our house. We heard a very loud, short "BOOM!" and the whole house shook. The sound and sensation I felt on the second floor was as if a 320-pound offensive lineman had set up a stepladder right next to me, jumped off of the top rung, and stomped as he landed. We met all of our neighbors out in the street wondering what had just happened. And this was from 3 MILES AWAY! We're hearing there are two deaths, two homes reduced to sticks, and dozens more heavily damaged.

No modeling here for the last couple of weeks. Just too much going on. There are three shows/swap meets coming up in the next few weeks - odd because there are so few of them in these parts and then we get a rash of one per week. If only I had the means to go on a spending spree. Crying

Saluting our veterans with a photo of "our Eagle" ...

The photo was taken from our house several months ago. Since then, a storm knocked down the old tree. The eagle spends time elsewhere now, and we rarely see it anymore.

Blessings to our vets, and a big THANKS !

My sentiments exactly!!Big Smile

Good mornin y'all!! Cowboy

Cloe, Pancakes and bacon til I say when dear, ok?Smile

Lookin like a sunny day out there, with temps in the mid 60's. Perfect day to get my 16 year old son up on the roof to clear the gutters. SWMBO wont let me up there since the stroke, so I'll bomb monkeyboy out of bed .Cool Yesterday we whipped the yard in shape, pulled the dead starter/generator off the Cub Crapette, and redid the downspout and drain tubing on the north corner of the house.Big Smile Then last night I resuscitated a pair of older engines for use on the Grandson's layout.

Question for the Grandpa's in the room. We are starting them young, ages 5&7 (I started at 4). Height recommendations for a small 4 x 6  layout? Bear in mind they also have a 6 month old baby brother. Mine IIRC was on top of an old kitchen table, seemed high til I was about 10.

See, they do like trains!

So today all I HAVE to do in hold the ladder for monkeyboy, paint a bodyshell for a client, and play with my new camera! Smile, Wink & Grin. Ought work out fine!Big Smile

Y'all, have a good un, prayers for those in need, thanks to the veterens, and blessings to all!Cowboy

Karl:  If I had mine still here I'd be thinking the same thing, but, consider...if you remember the look of surprise at how close up it seemed it might be an idea to place it on an old kitchen table....

Now having said that...4X6 plywood on 2 saw horses?

Thanks to all who have served to keep us free. As it says at the top of every page on my own forum "Freedom Isn't Free". That is the absolute truth.

Good morning. It's 67° with 87% humidity. It'll be mostly cloudy with thunderstorms likely. Expecting a high of 78°.

Looks like it's going to be wet on this Veteran's Day. To those here who have served and to veterans everywhere, as one veteran to another, thanks.

No layout plans for today with the exception of some cleaning up. That seems to be a never-ending battle.

The ankle has healed enough that the bleeding has stopped for now. I need to stay off it as much as possible for a couple more days.

Karl .... For grandkids, you may consider building a table with removable legs made from common 2x2's. Make them a height that fits the kids now, and repalce with longer legs later. .... Another thought. I made a layout for my son when he was a child that rolled under his bed.

Jeff .... Sorry you still have problems with your foot and ankle. Prayers for you.

Monon Jim ..... Sorry to hear about teh explosion that caused 2 deaths. Were there injured people, too.

Again. Thank You to those who have, are, will serve! Happy Veteran's day!!!

Went to Wally WOrld to get a few things.

Ended up picking up some new clothes that are actually in my size. I have to take what I can get when it comes to 3X. ANd TG Wally World has decided to carry them.

They had some nice thermal Henleys on sale for the same as regular Henleys which I picked a few of,,,the only ones they had in my size.

Also picked up a few casual dress shirts,,the only 2 in my size I grabbed. SO now I won't look so dowdy in "casual" clothes.

Need to go to the big and tall mens shop for the pants I need though.

Spent more than I should have, but as I said have to get when they have them....

Well, off to do laundry of hte newly aquired clothes...

Slow day here as my back is starting to bother me enough to aggrivate me!

Morning All,

Just sitting here drinking coffee.

Happy Veterans Day to all who have served, who are serving, and who will serve. Americans tend to forget our past very quickly but the military remembers and honors those who came before us. If you want to be impressed, talk to a WWII vet. I have talked with Sub Vets, Air Crew and several other servicemen and I have never failed to be impressed by them.

Garry- I am saying prayers for Jerry and Sallie.

Ken- I like that photo because I really enjoy train snow scenes.

Jim- Glad you and  your family is OK. Prayers for those who are not.

Karl- Nice display cases and future Model Railroaders.Smile

Jeff- I hope your ankle and foot are doing better.

Hope everyone has a good day and prayers for those in need.

Good Morning,

Well we certainly have winter here now and it is likely here to stay. A winter storm went through yesterday and we got about a foot of the white stuff. Thanks Johnboy!

It is Remembrance Day here and I especially remember my own Dad on this day for his service in the RCAF during WWII. He was a bomb aimer in a Halifax. I will likely watch a few programmes on the History Channel today.

Last week I got to go to Montreal on business but it was a very short trip, fly out on Thursday afternoon and back Friday afternoon. The return run meant 4 hours sitting in a plane which isn't my idea of fun.

Not much happening on the RR front. I just can't seem to get motivated in the last few weeks. I did start a Freight Station kit for the N scale but am only in the painting stage. I opened the box over a month ago and stared at it for some time. I might do more painting today.

Sorry to hear about Jerry's Sallie.

Well time to get moving,

CN Charlie

We lowered the flags (four) to half mast this morning in about 12' to 16' of new fresh snow at the Museum.

Thank you  to all the Vets of the Allied forces,  we owe you everything.

Back at work here for the third day and all I see for tomorrow is snow blowing, that will take me most of the day.

Prayers and blessings to all in need,  Galaxy, please do light a special candle for Jerry and Sallie.

Will check in later, --------Gators

Good Morning!!!

To all my fellow Veterans, from the bottom of my heart, Thank You very much.

Coffee and the Sunday breakfast buffet please. Thanks. Brenda got up almost two hours ago and said she was gonna make breakfast. Well, like I said it’s been two hours so……

Windy out there and boy do I mean windy. That means, all the chopped up leaves that were laying in the yard and grass clippings for the most part are…..gone

Karl- Keep in mind they won’t be that height for long, but still not full height for a while. Garry had a good idea, or just make a bit high for them now, but not too low for you. Low, but not too low.

Johnboy- Indifferent Feet!!??? 12 to 16 FEET??!!

Welp, got to sleep juuust a bit after 0326. Up at 0800. Not bad I guess. What taste over 4½ hours? Maybe nap today after all…Sunday and Veterens Day.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good Evening!

Pitch black dark outside - that makes me yawn all the time!

Janie, strong coffee and a slice of that apple pie, topped with vanilla ice cream, please.

Did not do much today, as I am still recovering from that cat´s hair allergy thing. Whenever I go to see my friend in the future, I will have to make a quick into his basement.  His birthday is coming up in a month and we are invited to his birthday party -. I don´t know how to make that.

There is a train show coming up in Bremen next weekend. Lothar and I will be going there. It is a nice hour´s train ride to Bremen. Good to get out of the house for a day!

Blessing and prayers to those in need & have a good one!

Afternoon All,

Well I had to walk away from the layout a little bit ago. Since MOH and son are out of the house I decided I would do some quality coal drag action starting at the TT area bringing a K4s to the mine, hookup, and run the layout for awhile then do everything in reverse. I vacuumed the pit and calibrated the bridge then went to get the loco and the only track positions the TT is recognizing are Track 1 & 2 (programmed at the factory). I tried resetting and calibrating several times with no changeBang Head.

I remember what a hassle it was to set track positions before. The controller that comes with the TT only allows user controlled movement in the set track position mode unlike the old style controller. So as I said before I had to walk away.

Here are the numbers on the RS-1 number boards that I made from a Brother P-Touch label maker (black tape with white letters). I think it came out  pretty good. This size is next to the smallest size you can do.

Here's hoping for a less frustrating day.

Raining here. I had to go down to my parents place to help with my mother. She fell out of bed. Only her pride is hurt and I'm sure she can get over that. She's been moved to the couch in the great Room for now. My sister and niece are working on her bed to make it more friendly for her. It's really too high.

Heavy lifting is something I'm NOT supposed to be doing so it didn't do me much good. Now that I'm back home I need to check my foot again to make sure I didn't do any damage to then change the dressing. Hopefully the rest of the day will be uneventful.

Galaxy: I got the box you sent. Thanks. I'm sure that'll help make those cold days on the road a little more bearable.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, Turkey club sandwich, French Fries, and a cup of decaf for right now please.

I wish all of you a day of reflection, a day of thanksgiving, and a day of peace.  Thank you veterans!  I salute you!

I went to church this morning and I am pleased to report it was still there and the rafters did not fall on me or anything...  I was busy ushering this morning as well.  The  I got to sit next to a gentle by the name of C. L. Siebert Jr. MMR #62.  He is a very spry 96 year old who was the first to ever earn his MMR by modeling Trolleys, complete with working overhead catenary.  He is still modeling trolleys BTW.  He spends his Winters now with his Son's Family here in Geneva.  We had a nice chat after church.

Sun is presently shining so I think I shall do a bit of outdoor stuff that still needs to get done beofre the white stiff flies...

Later!

Howmus - Great picture of an Eagle. We have a lot of them here in Alberta along the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. Majestic birds to say the least.

Now here's a picture I took a good many years ago at the Winnipeg MB Rail Museum. I know it was some sort of Rail Liner but that's about it. Any out there that knows what make etc. it is?

Afternoon guys

I went racing yesterday and got a new best time (car same as before, except with the skinny front tires) of 8.43 @ 82.... Weird I dropped .14 seconds but had no MPH gain.

I haven't done much on the trains since the last fuel tank. I just haven't had the time to mess with them lately.

Jouhnboy...Is digging out from 12-16 FEET of snow, so some of us who had a mild day should'nt complain!

Jeffrey- Glad you like them. I was wondering if they had gotten there yet.  They are smaller than I thought them to be, but I DO hope they do you some good for some heat there! If they are designed to help out up here in cold climes, they should do nicely for you down there! They were inexpensive enough with the coupon so I could two for you. FOr the price, I hope they serve you well. If not, let me know! You may have to wire them in, but you can do that I am sure.

Afternoon/Evenin', Flo - I'll have a bowl of chili, grated cheddar on that, and a RBF, please 'n' thankyouma'am!

Man, I guy misses for some days and there's couple dozen pages (almost) to catch up (if I had that much time...). Whew! Various less-important things going on than what a lot of people have had on their plates lately.

Galaxy, I hear you about having to get the clothes that they have in your size, WHEN they have 'em in stock. Wow My problem is, my inseam is 34 inches. I will see pants in my waist size, but in 32 inseam, but they don't keep much of the 34-inchers around. That, and the ones I wear for w**k (Dockers), it appears aren't made quite "like they used to", as the saying goes. I'm lucky if a pair of pants makes it through 3 months, usually. Oh, well - as I said, could be much worse. Happy for you that you found some in your size!

Garry nudged me (sent an email) about stopping by. I do hope and Angel that there have been few new ailments going on among the other Diners lately.

Jeff, I see you've had a bit with your feet (injury/cut?). Hope they are on the mend, Angel and that you can stay off your feet to continue the healing up. Thumbs Up

I think it was Curt who mentioned about WWII vets - this morning in church, there were four WWII vets there (pretty amazing by itself). My service wasn't anything to compare with theirs, as though I was in the Navy, I never was on a ship (was at a Naval Air Training facility) and never saw any combat, even though it was around the time of Viet Nam and all of that. My thanks for all those who did serve outside of their country, as I know my situation was the exception. Captain

Johnboy, I see you're glad to be back home (and tending to your sn*w) - Was Todd correct? 12 to 16 FEET?!? Ouch! Surprise That may take a while to clear, even if you only had one sidewalk and one driveway!

CN Charlie and Barry, are you guys keeping up with Johnboy's accumulation of that lovely white stuff?Whistling

Ray, it sounds like your (retiring) Pastor got a bunch of people 'conned' into various charitable habits, so to speak. Good for him, and I hope he thoroughly enjoys his retirement!

Ken, I think that Charter has been taking lessons from your Bank of Stupid... [/rant on] I got a call from them, telling me that they were about to cut off my broadband connection because I hadn't paid. Except, when I quizzed their person about where they sent the bill (which I have NOT seen yet), it turned out they sent it to my physical address. (I was wondering where their bill was...) Small problem there about where they mailed the bill, though - I have never received mail at this physical address in the 7 or so years I've lived here. Haven't even put a label on the box out front, so they wouldn't find my name on the box if the mail carrier was looking. Have ONLY received my ('snail') mail at my post office box, for the past 20+ years I have been in town! I get the person to change my address and send another bill to the P.O. box. Next night I get another call about the bill, so I had the Charter person put the first month's bill on my card. Okay (I thought to myself), done. Later that same night, I get another call from Charter's collection folks (won't say what I thought of that person). Gave THAT numbskull the number that their person gave me for the payment I had made. They found it, but wanted me to pay for the second month's bill (which had only gone out in their mail a few days earlier, and the due date isn't until after my next paycheck). I escalated things to the supervisor, who was still trying to get me to pay (early, IMHO) the second bill. Filled her in on the whole matter (didn't have the "color 8X10's with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one..." to fax to them...). Explained to the supervisor that if Charter was going to be a (***expletive deleted***), I was really ready to tell them that *I* was going to yank the service myself (and go back to local WiFi's, like I have been using for the past 3+ years). Finally got them off the phone (without hanging up).

Oh, did I mention the trouble I'm having with the broadband? I have their box connected to the cable, and an Ethernet cable to my access point/router (WiFi with four Ethernet ports), and the laptop connect by E-net to my AP/router. Except, I don't want to leave the WiFi up and running without me there (for some enterprising teen home from school to try to hack in for free WiFi at my expense). So, I disconnect the AP/router in the morning from the cable modem box. Except that when I get back home after w**k, I have been having trouble getting the connection back up and running. I can get it running sometimes, and if I disconnect everything and step-by-step reconnect (the cable modem, start it, connect the AP/router, start that up, then connect the laptop to the AP/router's E-net cable), I can get it going. But I'd like a simpler method than unconnecting/unplugging everything and re-powering/reconnecting everything steo-by-step. If I didn't require the WiFi for my iPod/iPad to get email on it, I'd just put a network switch in place of the router... [/rant off]

Ulrich, I'll have to go back and find your On2 (On3?) layout design, as your designs are always great!

I saw that Mr. Beasley has power again, which he enjoys, I'm sure. Thumbs Up

Anyone hear from Rob? I think he lived in - Georgia? Carolinas? and I know we hadn't heard from him in what seemed like along while (even before Sandy hit the East coast).

Galaxy, did you and  YOH have any other power 'flickers' like I recall Ray mentioned having when Sandy started coming in?

Has NSJoe been in the Diner (before or since the storm)? I recall he lived in the Jersey area, but I wasn't for sure if he had gone to college this last fall, or if it was going to be next fall when he went.

Part (but not all..) of my being gone has been w**k.Grumpy Mind you, its okay when we have the two of us and up to 10 people seen at walk-in during the day. Problem has been, we've had more than usual, couple of 14-person days (and no lunch or break to get out of the building), and one 17 person day(!). And also, my co-w**ker last week had passed one kidney stone, then went to his Dr., passed another and had one that didn't want to get out. So Wednesday he was out, and the Thursday a.m. I go out and get into my car and it won't start(!)...So I guess they got an appreciation for us that day (until about quarter of 10 in the morning when I got the battery replaced and got to the office. Turned out one co-w**er (who usually covers the counties north of us) called in after I had let them know I was getting the battery replaced, and they conned her into coming in to cover that day. No wonder we're having trouble keeping up on our paperw**k. Sigh (How long until I can retire?....)

Nope, haven't got much done on the MRR'ing stuff lately.

Think I'll chill out in the corner booth, munch on my chili, and enjoy my RBF.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.
