Good morning Diner Guests!

Today the Diner has been moved to Beautiful Helen, Georgia!  The leaves are turning, Oktoberfest is winding down, and preparations for Thanksgiving are being made.

I felt a bit sick today, my left side was hurting.  My job is not of the nature where I can call in sick or take a day off, but thankfully, it wasn't a long day.  I suspect a possible Kidney infection.

**Orders some cranberry juice, taking a sip, and makes an "ewww" face**

Prayers and thoughts to those who were affected by Sandy, or various other maladies.

Brad

(P.S., yeah, it may be *JUSSSSST* before midnight, but the train was running ahead of schedule)

Gidday All, a hot chocolate and one of Rays Butterscotch Toll House cookies, if he"s got one to spare that is, please.

Sandy still the lead story on the evening news here, down under, which is a little ironical as the past few days has been shorts, t shirt and, for my thinning, read, balding head, sun hat weather. Currently 55 F with a high of 66 F forecast tomorrow.

Helen , Georgia, eh!. Had to google it, thought we were in Southern Germany "til I read that it was a cunning plan by the town fathers to stop the decline in the town. Great roads for motorcyclists Hmm.

Her's food for thought Or FYI for all you who are oldER.

Make sure you put ANY and ALL Important relatives on your Medical Contact, notifications and discussions lists! This INCLUDES NAMING SPOUSES of your Children or WHOMEVER you want to, or should or could be in contact with your Drs, hospitals,  nurses, hospice care workers, ETC!

DON'T ASSUME they will talk to someone important to you such as SPOUSES OR INLAWS {children's spouses}!

Here's the scenario: MY MIL is on hospice home care. MY FIL had to go to ER Tuesday for problems. Wed. he returned to hospital ER and put in motion the hospice "respite care" clause for MIL in case he had to stay in the Hospital. That means MIL goes into the hospital too, to give FIL a break as primary caregiver, while he is recouping.

Hospice called here, but since My Other Half {MOH} was at work, The hospice nurse who called spent 15 minutes telling me why she couldn't talk to me because I was not on the "contact list", EVEN THOUGH I AM MOH'S LEGAL  SPOUSE. I could have made decisions without MOH, but I was NOT on the 'contact list'.

Now, I know what the FIL and MIL's Advanced Directives, Living Will, and Final wishes are,and have the paperwork here in the house SHOULD IT BE NECESSARY TO USE. BUT I CAN'T as I am NOT on the official "CONTACT LIST" ! SO it is NOT like I am in the dark about these matters.

So, NOW we will have FIL and MIL {actually INSIST THEY DO} put me on ALL "Contact lists" from NOW ON!

WE reminded MY father to do the same, cause even though MOH is MY SPOUSE, that doesn't mean they will talk to MOH either about MY father. MOH knows where the documents for MY father is at too, so MOH can access the info and is aware of my father's wishes too. AND MOH is not in the dark here either.

I have always listed my father as well as MOH on all my contact lists, just in case.

Also, DON'T assume they will even talk to YOUR spouse if need be, if they are not on your contact lists. Sounds silly, I know, but always put your spouse on your "contact lists" TOO!

ALSO, you should fill out 2 Health Care proxys  {HCP} for the closest next of kin INCLUDING SPOUSES, that you want to make the decisions for you in case you are incapacitated. THIS is a cover your butt Idea. MINI wallet sized HCP's can be had at the hospital or Dr's. office. One is to CARRY WITH YOU, and ONE FOR YOUR SPOUSE TO CARRY WITH THEM to PROVE they are indeed your HCP.

We learned this the HARD WAY!!!

Now maybe you will all have an easier time of it Should {when} something happens to you or your family.

Good Morning all,

Most of the roads are clear but over 10,000 people are still without power.  Mostly due to trees still on the ground that need to be cleared before power can be restored.  Some of the street lights over I-90/SR-2 are still on the ground and the anemometer from the airport is still missing.  It’s been raining here constantly for 7 days now with over 6” of rain on the ground.  If HD garden center is open I need to pick up about a yard of dirt to fill in the hole in the tree lawn and some siding for the garage.

Yesterday was my first day back in the office trying to “clean up” most of the bad bridges.  The guys down the hall continue to receive reports on damaged, off station, or missing ATON.

Good morning. It's 50° with 97% humidity and dense fog. Later it'll be mostly sunny with a high of 82°.

Well the morning will be pretty much shot. I have to go down to my parents place this morning and see that my mother gets her breakfast and morning meds then be there to watch over her until my father gets home. Later I have to go to town to pay bills, buy gas and groceries and do whatever else I need to get done.

Took Mon. & Tues. off of work because I do not work well in the middle of a hurricane.........asked the boss for a pair of work gloves and was given a hard time about it (was told they did not wear out working......insinuating I don`t do any work)..........worked 13 hours yesterday removing trees from one of the lines the RR owns......and was expected to work without a lunch break...........

I have an interview for a sheet metal shop today that was suppose to be Tuesday last week......but was stuck in Middletown NY for 4 day repairing some washouts that happened last year on the old Middletown & New Jersey RR.

Working for a shortline RR is not the thing to do with your life unless you are buddy-buddy and/or are related with the boss/owner .

I think I`m going to quit tomorrow.

Sorry for the rant.

Morning Becomes Electric!

Power came back on about 8:30 last night.  After manually heaving the garage doors open last night, I pulled the car in and turned off the headlights.  It didn't get dark.  The lights came on while I was parking the car.

I went to the kitchen, set up the coffee maker for the morning and reset the clock.  It was so nice to come downstairs to coffee this morning.

The Burbs of Boston did not really suffer much out at the edge of the storm, but there were a lot of trees down on power lines and there are still thousands without power.  But, the weather has been mild and the biggest issue we've had is keeping stuff in the freezer from thawing out.  Bags of ice work pretty well.  We were only down for 27 hours.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a big ole piece of peach PIE please. Thanks. No, no boiled peanuts for me. Yuck.

Pretty nice load of future wards of the state last night, but not a whole lot. Most all, save a couple, were what I would call trick or treat age. Haven’t had the teenagers dressed in regular clothes with a couple dabs of something on their faces or a goofy hat fleecing the kiddies candy for a couple years now. Nor have we had the influx from other towns, namely Springfield and Riverton arriving by the van load either. Most seemed to be from here or maybe their parents grew up here and bring their little tax deductions to see Grandma and Grandpa and then head out to reap the benefits of the old stomping grounds in safety. I don’t have a problem with that. It’s the ones who load up and hit us by bus loads because they can hit more houses in less time and probably more lights on per block, so that means a higher take in less time. Candy isn’t all that cheap you know, though that’s not the sole reason, but that makes it less for the neighbors kids.

Enough of that. Still w**king around the house and mow that Halloween is over, I no longer have an excuse to leave the spider webs up around the front door so they must come down I suppose. I use them as cheap and easy to install Halloween decorations. Brenda doesn’t really care for the real stuff, she would rather buy fake spider webs and install them. Myself, I say that’s a waste of money when nature provides for free. Like buying leaves to spread around. Why. Which reminds me, they have to get gone here soon too. My reasoning of they act as an alert that trick or treaters are coming is also no longer valid.

Also pray for the workers who are trying to restore power to those affected by the storms. They are working in very dangerous situations. I know it’s frustrating and people are short tempered and it’s perfectly understandable given the circumstances. But at the same time it’s not as easy as just putting a line back up and flipping the switch for power as they go. They have to untangle a nightmare, make sure that when they get a main line up, that all connections to homes along that stretch are good and all along anything that stretch feeds., disconnect the homes and sections that are not ready for the power to be reattached. It’s a slow process but flip a switch too soon and another person could be needlessly injured or worse.

It is also heartwarming to see on the news that amongst all the devastation, so many people in an area of the country that to the rest of us is portrayed as one of the rudest (much as described by them themselves), are coming out in droves to help those that have less to try and help each other make it through this disaster. Sharing food and power. Not so rude and heartless as portrayed if you ask meAngel.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

If you don't want to do this for yourself, then do it for them.

When my Mom was in her final days, it fell to me to deal with her care.  I read her "living will" about not wanting to be kept alive unnaturally, with no hope of recovery.  Those are my documented wishes for myself, too, but it was much easier to read it with her signature, and then to tell the doctor to let her go.

And what age would that be?

My Mom used to make up an elaborate costume for herself and go trick-or-treating in her retirement community.  Nobody had candy, so they invited her in for cocktails.

Not even one "Trick or Treater" for us last night as the event had been rescheduled for this coming Saturday because of the anticipated storm. Both communities rescheduled. I say both, because my side of the street is in one township and across the street is a different borough. We used to get anywhere from 250 to 300 kids, but over the last couple of years it has gone down to around 150. Halloween was always one of my favorite holidays and still is. The wife and I enjoy seeing the little ones in their costumes. Some very imaginative Mothers out there. We don't mind the older kids either. They are almost always polite and are simply having a good time. The number of outside decorations seems to be less this year too.

I recently picked up a Proto 1000 Budd RDC. I am a little disappointed in its performance. I only have a 4'x4' test oval at this time. One corner is a little warped, not terribly so, but enough that there is a small grade coming off the corner. The Budd comes to a complete stop as soon as it hits that little grade. A little nudge gets it going but it will stop there every time. I was wondering if any of you have one of these and how your's performs. I do need to check to make sure that the trucks are free and not binding.

I have to take the car to the dealer tomorrow for an oil change and tire rotation. Then I think we will stop at the Mall so the wife and I can get some exercise. We both need to walk and with her limited vision, that's the safest place. Plus there are plenty of places to sit down if her ankle starts to bother her. Then I get to watch the shoppers. A very pleasant pasttime indeed.

Everyone stay safe and best wishes for those disrupted by Sandy.    Tom

Joe-Geeah???  Now Brad, nothing down there ever runs ahead of schedule!  Tastefully late, yes, but never, ever ahead of schedule.  Why they done gots laws against it ya know....Whistling  OK, so we're stuck in Georgia for November I guess.  I drove through there a couple times on my way to Flowidah to visit family but THAT is about all.  Sure hope there is something to see RR oriented around here... Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh

Mornin' everyone!  A happy All Saints Day to you, or All Hallows if if you like, and even Samhain for the Pagans out there, the first day of Winter in the ancient world.  Traditionally, the solstice was mid winter hence carols like, "In the deep mid-winter...."

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of granola cereal a couple chocolate chip cookies and lots of dark roast coffee to wash it all down with.

Dark and gloomy outside here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  Currently at the high for the day, 45°F.  I shall be relighting the wood stove soon.

Galaxy, good advise to all of us.  I will be seeing my lawyer soon to write a new will, the old one being about 30 years old now, and should check to make sure my sons names are among those who can access my medical records in an emergency.

Hope to spend some quality time in the Layout rooms today.  I have a lot of items to finish.

Later!

AngryJust spent the last 2 years going through the same things and yes, it's a royal pain to keep the health care providers up to date on all the combinations and permutations of who can do/decide on what Huh? However, they do have to CYA because of all the privacy, legal issues out thereAngry now days.

For instance...I recently received a check in the mail made out to my mothers Estate. House insurance rebate of just over $100. Now I am her executor and only child but the because the check came way late, and is made out to to the estate of....and the Estate account at the bank has been closed, I can't cash the check.

The insurance company will not issue the check in my name even though they have copies of the wills probate.

Round and round it goes... Grrrrrr. I suppose in 6 months I'll get a letter asking me why the check has'nt been cashed..

Duhhhhhh

Galaxy, good advise to all of us.  I will be seeing my lawyer soon to write a new will, the old one being about 30 years old now, and should check to make sure my sons names are among those who can access my medical records in an emergency.

RAY- Also consider adding your son's SPOUSES as well, if they know what you want...in case your sons are unavailable immediately, but the SPOUSE is! If you trust the spouse as well, name them too.

The Meals on Wheels program called looking for MOH {at work} Fortunately this woman talked to me as itg is no so "private" that they get MOW. I told her About the situation. Someone needs to call them to suspend service if not needed...and for how long. SO I can do that!

For example, had it been a real strong emergency and I got MOH at work to go to hospital, and I beat MOH there with the Advanced Directives,, even though those are my FIL's wishes, they can't talk to me about it-cause I am not on the contact list and not a direct child- and the hospital will go against his wishes to save his life. SO THINK ABOUT ADDING YOUR CHILDREN"S SPOUSES to contact lists...DON'T ASSUME they will talk to spouses!

If you DON't add spouses who may know your wishes or have paperwork, then the hospital will possibly go against your wishes {such as DO Not Resuscitate -DNR} and do so...

Just an FYI

Back from the morning duty call. Went to town and got the van inspected. From there went to pay on my loan, get gas and buy groceries.

Speaking of groceries, Ezra Johnson bought his wife a new grocery getter. Traffic jams shouldn't be a problem.

Looks like the Diner was on the Midnight Train to Georgia.

Here are some of the lyrics .....

L.A. proved too much for the man,
So he's leavin' the life he's come to know,
He said he's goin' back to find
Ooh, what's left of his world,
The world he left behind
Not so long ago.
He's leaving,
On that midnight train to Georgia,
And he's goin' back
To a simpler place and time.
And I'll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia,
I'd rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine.
He kept dreamin'
That someday he'd be a star.

Ray ..... Any cookies left. They look good!

Cheers, everybody ......

It took mine more than three years! And that was AFTER waiting almost a year for the skin to grow back on my feet. Ever been badly burned and seen the skin just peel off? That's what happened to my feet except they weren't burned. The skin just decided to part company with them. I found out later that it's a complication of diabetes. Things went downhill from there. Today I can hardly walk without the assistance of a cane and even then I can't go far, a couple hundred feet at the most. I could never do a job like yours where you're expected to be on your feet a lot. I would be in absolute agony!

OK Brad, takes us on a tour of Beautiful Helen, Georgia. So why are we here and what is there to see besides Glass Mountain, Alpine Mini Golf, Cool Water Tubing and the like? Are we in a train yard, siting on a spur or in a old closed Denny's Restaurant?

Today our excursion train, powered by restored G&NW Ten-Wheeler #203, will be taking us to Robertstown to visit some of the sawmills in operation.  Tomorrow's tour includes Nora Mills.  Next week we will interchange at Clermont, GA, and follow the line to Chestatee to visit the Pyrite/Copper Mines.

(Historical notes:  The sawmills are long gone, as is the Chestatee Mining operation, but the mine shafts are still there.  Nora Mills, however, was still in business last time I checked, about 2-3 years ago.  G&NW 203, AFAIK, is also long gone.)

On a more personal note, I'm still feeling a bit unwell, my left side is still hurting a bit, off and on.  I'll forward my ticket on the excursion to someone who hasn't been before.  And my our thoughts and prayers go out to all still affected by Sandy or various maladies.

**Orders another Cranberry juice, takes a sip, making an "eww" face**

I'll be back in later.

G-

You are so right about the "I can't speak to you because you aren't on the contact list" mentality sweeping the country. Here, in FL, we've got everyone riding the "Privacy Law" high-horse so that you can't even call the hospital to check on someone's condition without their personal id # - they won't even tell you if the person is a patient or not. We have so much paperwork now for my MIL, Deb, Her Bro, and me - it is crazy.

However, this is good advice for All of us to follow, not just the "Older" ones, because you never know when you may need someone to make "life or death" decisions on your behalf. Hope everything works out for the family, Take Care..

Tom I also bought one of the Proto 1000 Budd RDCs and it ran good on my friends layout on DC and he has a lot of old switches on his mainline. With only one truck powered I don't know how well it will pull as his mainline is pretty much level.  Slow speed is great and no pickup problems seen. I plan on installing a DCC decoder first chance I get and can't wait to see how it responds on DCC.Big Smile

Hope this Helps! Jim

I hear you Jeff! Had a few diabetic ulcers on my feet. This last one caused an amputation.

The long term healing is the problem.Crying I was lucky enough to get back to work 2 weeks later.
I still have open wounds with no skin that I have to tend to every day. Some are 7+ months old!

Diabetes SUCKS!!!

Take care and watch your sugar my friend!!!
