Morning Coffee in the DIner Car...

GOOD MORNING!!!

Today is Friday, November 30th, 2012!!!

Sometimes, in MRRIng, we may "push the envelope", SO:

Meaning:

To attempt to extend the current limits of performance. To innovate, or go beyond commonly accepted boundaries.

Origin:

This phrase came into general use following the publication Tom Wolfe's book about the space programme - The Right Stuff, 1979:

"One of the phrases that kept running through the conversation was ‘pushing the outside of the envelope’... [That] seemed to be the great challenge and satisfaction of flight test."

Wolfe didn't originate the term, although it's appropriate that he used it in a technical and engineering context, as it was first used in the field of mathematics.

The envelope here isn't the container for letters, but the mathematical envelope, which is defined as 'the locus of the ultimate intersections of consecutive curves'. In a two-dimensional example, the set of lines described by the various positions of a ladder sliding down a wall forms an envelope - in this case an arc, gently curving away from the intersection of the wall and floor. Inside that envelope you will be hit by the ladder; outside you won't.

(Note for the mathematically inclined: it might seem intuitive that the centre point of the ladder would follow that same arc. In fact it describes a circle centred around the origin).

That's enough mathematics. The point is that an envelope is that which envelops. The phrase has something in common with an earlier one - 'beyond the pale'. Inside the pale you were safe; outside, at risk.

In aviation and aeronautics the term 'flight envelope' had been in use since WWII, as here from the Journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, 1944:

"The best known of the envelope cases is the 'flight envelope', which is in general use in this country and in the United States... The ‘flight envelope’ covers all probable conditions of symmetrical maneuvering flight."

That envelope is the description of the upper and lower limits of the various factors that it is safe to fly at, i.e. speed, engine power, manoeuvrability, wind speed, altitude etc. By 'pushing the envelope', i.e. testing those limits, test pilots were able to determine just how far it was safe to go. By 1978 the phrase was in use in print. In July that year, Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine had:

"The aircraft's altitude envelope must be expanded to permit a ferry flight across the nation. NASA pilots were to push the envelope to 10,000 ft."

The following year, Wolfe picked up the phrase and it went from a piece of specialist technical jargon into the general language.

"JaBear" - in a perfect world, politicians would be specialists in their field. Can you imagine how much money that would save?

Angela Merkel has successfully gotten rid of all her "enemies" (read political friends) around her, now she can reign without having to fear any competition.

I´d see my role as a politician more that of a jester, holding the mirror... Whistling He was usually the only one allowed to talk freely.

Wow, I am impressed! How do you know me that well? AFAIK, we have never met!

While still in business, I was always the guy in the background, pulling the strings. I left the glory to others, but hardly ever was in the line of fire as well.

Good Morning All,

30F and still dark here at 6am. There is still some snow lingering on the ground in the shaded areas from Tuesdays' snow. Yup, I'm ready to go back to Oz Toto. It all seems a fantastic dream now - what a cool place evenif it was blazing hot.

The pill pockets sound a good idea. Hadn't heard of them before. Rupert the mutt loves cheese so we usually give him meds wrapped in cheese. Ratty the toy fox terrier doesn't like cheese and she is more problematic especially as she is still under 10lbs soaking wet.

Galaxy - mad as a hatter has a lot of meaning here as Danbury was the center of the US hatting industry until the 70's when the last of the plants shut down. There is mercury everywhere from the process used to process the rabbit pelts used to make the hats and there lies the problem. You can actually injest mercury with no real effects, but in vapor form it is deadly. Mercury traveled in the ground throughout the city from the many factories downtown and through the Still River and its' tributaries so much of the land is untransferrable without special permits or hugely expensive remediation.

Ulrich - good luck running for office. You will soon find out that simply being there let alone speaking your mind will put you in the line of fire. I don't regret the 10 years I spent on the Board of Education here but ultimately I was put out of office by my own party for voting my conscience and not the party line. It can be a thankless job if you do it right but I had some fun as well exposing the silliness that sometimes happened.

Back in the shop and getting loose ends tied up before leaving next month for New Zealand. My birthing day is tomorrow but more importantly I'm going to a memorial service for my friend John Fitch. John was a well known racing driver, a WWII fighter pilot, and an inventor. I workked with him when I was at a company called Mecca Development (now Evans Cooling Systems) and we were developing a new cooling system for cars. Very soft spoken and even tempered, but one of the smartest people I've ever met. The yellow barriers you see at highway exits are his most visible invention - the Fitch Barrier. John was 95 and we're the poorer for his passing.

Time to get into the shop and do some w..k.   See Y'all later,  J.R.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee please. Thanks.

Movin a bit slow today. No issues, just movin slow.

RAY!!!!!! STOP!!!!! Don’t use the cow pill shooter on the cat!!!!! It’ll shoot right through her! Hmm him. (it's a cat. You never really know) Besides taking a strip of hair off the underside of his tail, it could put someone’s eye out if he’s pointed in the right direction. Oh sure it may be good for a chuckle to see the look on the cats face, but I don’t think it’s a wise thing to do.

Stopped in yesterday morn but when I went to the next page, the site crashed so I looked around internet to see if it was on my end or not and everything was fine so I checked back, still down and went on to other things for the day. Don't know for how long, probably came right back up after I left.

Ya know, before my Mother and Brenda’s Mother, mainly mine cause she was first, I would talk about putting parents in a nursing home as very last resort. Talking about responsibilities, loyalty, how they sacrificed for us when we were young and how it’s basically our turn now. But after experiencing it, and it wasn’t that bad for me, I have a different view. A waaaay different view. Taking care of someone who is failing, is too much for most and in fact in many instances, worse for the parent. We can’t give the kind of care they need no matter how hard we try or how good the intentions are. We just can’t. There also is the psychological effect on eth “patient”. At some point they will feel as if they are a burden and despite all the convincing otherwise, they will realize the truth and then…., well then they decide kinda, to stop the burden and just sorta let go. No one really deep down wants to be a burden. There are also things that need to be done that is best to leave to a disinterested, so to speak, third party. Parents can’t put that sympathy “you don’t know how hard it is” or “how much it hurts” on a nurse. Well, for the most part. And that’s not even going into the unintentional, but inevitable hard feelings and feelings of exasperation on the part of the caregivers and the family as the time goes on and the burden increases. Yes burden. Gotta call a spade a spade. The family squabbles about what should and should not be done and how it’s done. Just not good or fair to the parent. They see and sense that too.

Jeff-  I hope the best for your Mother and you are doing the best for her.

Galaxy- I wish the same for you and your MIL/FIL.

Neither one of you can physically care for an ailing person and I don’t mean that in any ill fashion. Anyone who expects you to ….well in my opinion…..,for any of several possible reasons, does not have the best interest of the patient in mind.

I wonder why they don’t just flavor pills like they do for children’s aspirin. Or like the heartworm medss we get for Missy. We tried the pil covers, peanut butter etc. She just somehow got the goodies off the pill and spit it out like a cherry pit. With the flavored ones, she just chews it up like a treat. Well, not exactly. She’ll snub it at first, but give her a regular treat and then after she will readily take the pill. Must not taste quite as good. Guess dogs eat the best first to be sure someone doesn’t get it before they do. Me, I always save the best for last and end on a good note.Dinner

Good luck on the test Ken.

I wish Ulrich well of course, but I’m sorry, if politics in Germany is anything like it is here in the States, I don’t think he is well suited for it. Then again, if we expect change……

Gotta run into Habitat for Humanities and drop off some light fixtures Brenda has had me replace. And here I thought the remodel was done but for the cleanup. I guess I didn’t factor in the “you know, I think now I don’t like…”part.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Oh Jeff, forgot to say. Have your Father check with and Attorney who deals with Medicare and Medicade. I know there are ways to protect your Father and provide for him while still making the program available for your Mother to pay for the Nursing home. The old "everything has to be spent up and all assets have to be gone for Medicare/ Medicade to pay" isn't exactly true. A friend just went through it with his Father and his Mother is still alive and well. I don't know the details, but even if I did, it would be best for him to hear it from someone who knows all the details as it pertains to him.

He's aware of it. Medicare is paying the bill for the nursing home.

Good morning. It's 51° with 99% humidity and patchy fog. It'll be mostly cloudy with a high of 72°.

No plans for today other than doing a little cleanup work on the layout. Maybe now I can get further than the preparation stage before my day gets hijacked. That'll be great. I have some cleanup work on the extension (Sundown) and the front of the east side (Knutzville). There's places for the stuff to go, it's just getting it there.

Todd - I subscribe to your statement. I don´t think I am the one to run for an office. Apparently, there are folks around who think differently. I doubt that there is much of a difference between the politics here and at your end of the Big Pond - maybe it is a little less noisy here.

There is a nice smell coming from the kitchen. Petra has just made a chocolate cake, topped with cinnamon frosting - yummy! Have some, folks!

It´s a smell of Christmas, although both of us are not (yet?) in the mood for it. Time for a not so little poem?

When the snow falls wunderbar
And the children happy are,
When the Glatteis on the street,
And we all a Gluhwein need,
Then you know, es ist soweit:
She is here, the Weihnachtszeit.

Every Parkhaus is besetzt,
Weil die people fahren jetzt
All to Kaufhof, Mediamarkt,
Kriegen nearly Herzinfarkt.
Shopping hirnverbrannte things
And the Christmasglocke rings.

Merry Christmas, merry Christmas,
Hear the music, see the lights,
Frohe Weihnacht, Frohe Weihnacht,
Merry Christmas allerseits?

Mother in the kitchen bakes
Schoko-, Nuss - and Mandelkeks.
Daddy in the Nebenraum
Schmucks a Riesen-Weihnachtsbaum.
He is hanging auf the balls,
Then he from the Leiter falls?

Finally the Kinderlein
To the Zimmer kommen rein.
And es sings the family
Schauerlich: "Oh, Christmastree!"
And the jeder in the house
Is packing die Geschenke aus.

Merry Christmas, merry Christmas,
Hear the music, see the lights,
Frohe Weihnacht, Frohe Weihnacht,
Merry Christmas allerseits?

Mama finds under the Tanne
Eine brandnew Teflon-Pfanne,
Papa gets a Schlips and Socken,
Everybody does frohlocken.
President speaks in TV,
All around is Harmonie,

Bis mother in the kitchen runs:
Im Ofen burns the Weihnachtsgans.

And so comes die Feuerwehr
With Tatu, tata daher,
And they bring a long, long Schlauch
And a long, long Leiter auch.
And they schrei - "Wasser marsch!",
Christmas is - now im - A...

Merry Christmas, merry Christmas,
Hear the music, see the lights,
Frohe Weihnacht, Frohe Weihnacht,
Merry Christmas allerseits?

Now you probably won´t be needing Google Translate to understand it. Those of you with German ancestry will love it!

Don't know what time I will leave work tonight, it will be later than I was going to get off. So I decided to take the time to have a cup of coffee first to wake up. Coffee

Ulrich A Politician, hum I guess we can still be friends! Whistling Sure wish you a great deal of luck. Who knows, you just might get in offices!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a cup of dark roast coffee and a couple of those glazed sour cream donuts to start the day.

Ulrich, I always agree with Mahatma Ghandi, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”  That's the closest I will come to making a political statement here at the forum.  I try to do my part.

Got up this morning to find the kitties food dish empty and Manét looking for more to eat...  Guess his appetite is back.  Gave him a dish of his canned food and he gobbled it up.  Got out the pill pockets and put in the pills (2 pockets each with one pill) and put them on his dish.  He just sat and looked at me...  I put my hand down and pointed to the "treats"  He sniffed at them, and down they went.  He then meowed asking for more...  I think he is better and thank God for the invention of pill pockets!

Have a busy day ahead so I better not hang around in here much longer.

Catch you all later!

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, I'll have a toasted cheese sandwich, french fries, one of those big dill pickles, and a cup of decaf for lunch please.

Dennis, Jeffrey found it for you.  The ones I am using are these: http://www.greenies.com/cats.aspx#/products/cat-pill-pockets  They are just about irresistible for pets.  I started using them when I had to medicate my mothers old cat (Sheila) I ended up with.  She had a thyroid tumor and had to thyroid hormone.  We started out with a ointment that was rubbed in her ears.  Worked well and she didn't mind, but good little Manét was right there to "clean" the old girls ears.  I ended up having to hand medicate the old girl sticking my finger down her throat with the pill which was stressful for both of us (those little teeth are sharp!).  The vet told me about the Pill Pockets and we gave them a try.  Problem solved and old Sheila started to look forward to getting her pill every day.

Evening All,

Just finished supper and getting ready to drink a cup of Java.

Yesterday ran 22 calls in 16 hours. I was sure glad to get off duty. Went up to the LHS today and picked up a Bowser H-21 car that has a steel clearance frame that sits inside it. I will probably build it Sunday. Finally finished my FP-7 ABA lashup. I will try to take a picture later.

Ulrich- Best wishes in your new endeavor.

Jeff- Prayers for your family to get through these tough times.

Ray- Glad Manet is doing better.

CDN Dennis- I hope Furnando is doing better.

Darryl- Congrats to your daughter and son.

Galaxy- I continue to say prayers for your family.

Ken- Hope you passed your test.

BN 24- It looks like a very nice set.

Hope everyone has a good evening and prayers for those in need.

 Evening Dinners!

Flo, Beer pleases and I will buy around.

Work Front, man that was a long drive! It was a 84 mile round trip, Dave is going to have to help me out with some Gas Cash, none of the waiting for check stuff! I will be there again Saturday and maybe Sunday. I spent $12.00 today in gas.

But I am glad I went, made a pretty good amount of commission for a slow day, made a extra $85.00. If I could make that everyday I just be poor! Whistling If Saturday is half way busy, I could make maybe $160.00! Dinner

Manager Test. I have not had the time to take it yet, so I better call Dave and let him know! Besides Life, Work and BoS ( I was getting ready to log in and Bank Of Stupid called) getting in the way I know nothing about it! Reason I put it that way I don't know if I can start it, stop it, then restart it, if it is timed and how long it should or could take? Last on line I took for a different company took 3 HOURS! I did pass the test, but I passed up that job to take this one! Bang Head

See you all later, yes Ziva, I am coming! Big Smile

Where will we be for December?

A warm place, perhaps?

We were out today, the deer seemed like they were all over. They jumped front of the car, and I almost hit two of them at 2 locations.

Other than doing the first half of the grocery shopping I didn't get much done today. I discovered I still have rather intense pain in my upper back. Guess I must have pulled a muscle when I was shifting my mother around.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Busy day today...  Got the envelopes I printed up for a neighbor who is mailing out some scholarship donation requests (Her Daughter graduated from a university a few years back Suma *** Laud and has a scholarship named for her and was one of our MLK Scholarship winners as well).  She was going to pay me to print up the return envelopes...  I told told her I would be glad to do the printing, but no way was she going to pay me for it!  She is making a donation to the scholarship in my name.  She picked up the envelopes at noon.

I then hooked the truck up to the little trailer to haul a large copier to the recycler for the Boy Scouts.  The truck made to the Scout Office and then to the recycling center and back home with only a couple of bad clunks from the dangling stabilizer in the front.....  They told me at the dealers it was legal to drive it...  They also said that didn't infer it was safe, just legal...  LOL  I am supposed to drive out to camp and back the first weekend in January...  May have to think twice about that.  I will be stripping out some equipment I want to keep like the 700w inverter in it in the next couple weeks.

Garry, yep, it is suicide time for the deer around here as well.  There is one dead alongside the road right across from the Scout Office...  I have gotten so I really don't like to drive at night this time of year!

Manét took his pills like a good boy tonight and looked around for more!  He is actually begging for it.  well for the pockets anyway.  He is sitting right here near me on the floor as I type.

Got the rest of the trees made along the wall by the hillside tonight.  Photos tomorrow!

Hope you all have a great night.  Prayers for all in need!

I discovered I still have rather intense pain in my upper back. Guess I must have pulled a muscle when I was shifting my mother around.

I know how you feel Jeff, I sometimes get pulled muscles in my neck, upper back, and right under the shoulder blades.
