I've always wondered why there's no headlight lit up on the MRR pic on the header above. Did they park the train for the photo!?

Tonight Photobucket sprung their Photobucket Beta on me. YUCK! I couldn't change back to the original version fast enough! Why do they always have to screw around with something that already works?

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf please.

My son and granddaughter #2 came over about noon today.  He followed me as I drove the truck with no brakes to the dealer for repairs...  Actually I did have front brakes, but the main line to the rear brakes was kaput!  The service dept. gave me a call late this afternoon and it was indeed the main line going to the back brakes.  They should have it repaired tomorrow, and I should be a few $$$ poorer.

I took my son and his daughter out to lunch after he picked me up at the dealers.  The little one is such a character!  She was quite well behaved actually...  I later went back downtown to get my allergy shot and do a couple more things.  Late this afternoon I got the lawn mower out to do the final mowing of the season.  Think I should have mowed it back in October as it is very tall and wet at the moment.  Got about 1/3rd. done and ran out of battery.

Had a properties meeting tonight (Boy Scout Camp) and then came back home to do a bit of scenery stuff on the layout.  Just putting a layer of joint compound on the plaster cloth I installed yesterday.

Hope all of you have a great night.  Prayers for all in need...

Howmus........I had the same problem on my truck a month ago........steel line to the back was rusted away......only had front brakes but no rear............that cost me almost 300 to fix.

Yep!  That is what it will set me back...  They have assured me that all the other lines appear to be OK.  I am just very, very glad I found out in my own driveway rather than barreling down the highway someplace!  The old Dakota is fairly low millage (about 70,000 miles) but is 11 years old and starting to show its age in some of those ways.  I now put all of 800 or so miles a year on it, and half of that is my son borrowing it to haul his boat trailer.  For the time being it is worth hanging on to I guess.

Good Morning

It has been a sunny..until the friendly neighbourhood cloudbankGrumpy showed up... morning for us. We actually did see a speck of sun...just in time for sunset....

Today is supposed to be sunny..that we will see...

I had an interesting discussion with a neighbour of ours about our property taxes here...considering that we are in a city that has consistently raised our tax bills by 2% or so a year we seem to be still fairly low when it comes to that...my property tax for last year amounted to $4000 on a $329,000 house...so there we be. City council must be doing something right here to keep it as low as it has....Whistling

GOOD MORNING!!!

Today is a fair-to-middlin' day according to the weather guesser. SO:

Fair to middlin':

Meaning: Slightly above average

Origin:

'Fair to middling' comes to the party with two friends, fair to middlin' and fair to midland. Both of these  gatecrashers derive from the original phrase, but in different ways. Fair to middlin' is just a colloquial version written in the way that the expression is often spoken, in mid-west America at least, which, as we will see, is where the expression originated.

Fair to midland is an odder fish and comes from the mispronunciation of 'middling' as 'midland'. The question is, why would anyone do that? It could be just a simple mistake, although that seems unlikely as 'fair to midland' doesn't really mean anything. More likely is that it was the result of a deliberate jokey mispronunciation, along the lines of san fairy Ann, taking the Miguel etc. This could have originated in the English Midlands. It  is widely used there and the English are inveterate 'accidentally on purpose' mispronouncers - Cockney Rhyming Slang is an entire dialect built along those  lines. In the case of 'fair to midland', the origin is more likely to be the USA, specifically Texas, the reference being to that state's city of Midland. The earliest printed citation of 'fair to midland' that I can find comes from The New York Times, May 1935:

Dr. William Tweddell, who is what might be called a fair-to-Midland golfer...

The current usage of the expression is predominantly American and has been boosted by the popularity of the US hard rock band that has adopted it as its name.

As to the original version of the phrase 'fair to middling', that is also  of American origin. 'Middling' was and is a term used by farmers to describe the quality of  farm produce, especially sheep. There were several  loosely defined grades of produce: 'good', 'fair,  'middling', 'ordinary' and 'poor'.

'Middling' is an old Scots word and has been in use since at least the 15th century with the same meaning as now, that is, 'of medium or moderate size, strength, quality'. Around 1450, the  Marquis of Bute wrote the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue, which includes what appears to be the earliest example of 'middling' in print:

'The ynch sulde be with the thoum off midling mane nother our mikil nor our litil bot be tuyx the twa'.

I interpret that Old Scots text as meaning 'The inch should be measured with the thumb near the middle, neither at the largest point nor the smallest but between the two' but, if there are any old Scots out there who know better, I would be happy to be enlightened.

'Fair' was used in the UK from the 18th century onward to describe  farm produce. An example of that usage is found in John Mortimer's farming handbook The Whole Art of Husbandry, 1707:

As you gather your Fruit, separate the fairest and biggest from the middling.

These farming terms travelled to America with the early Scottish and English settlers. Like sailors who, when they needed finer designations of direction than North, East South and West, came up with South-west, North-east etc., farmers needed a name for 'not quite fair but better than average' and they opted for 'fair to middling'. The earliest uses of the expression all come from the USA, as does this example from an 1829 edition of John Stuart Skinner's farming journal The American Farmer:

Two or three lots of good wethers [castrated rams] brought from $2.50 a 3 per head, and a few lots of fair to middling, $1.50 a 2.

Farmers didn't stop there and  came up with other intermediate grades, like 'good fair'. Needing finer and finer classifications of quality, they again followed the sailors' lead and copied  their 'North-north-east' style. In 1873,    Beeton's Dictionary of Commerce described a delivery of cotton as:

Good fair to good saw-ginned Surat cotton.

Good Morning Gang!

I have a dentist´s appointment coming up today, so I have a queasy feeling in my stomach...

No, Janie, no breakfast for me this morning - I just gave my teeth a thorough clean-up!

Did some w*rk on the drawings of my buildings, so I can use them as a template for construction.

The next step was planned to build cardboard mock-ups, but I think this is a waste of money and time. I will be using 5mm foam board instead and go for the final model instead. Foam board is not much more expensive than cardboard, but I can add a lot more detail already. The cost of material for one building is in the range of $ 10, that´s foam board, doors & windows, glazing, roofing material. rain pipes etc. Gives me something to look forward to!

Have a good one!

Good Morning all,

Ray & rdgk1se319, Brake line rusted out on my 2003 this past summer but I also needed front calipers: $1340.00

Terry, yea I plan on moving as soon as I can save some money and figure out how to break even on this old house.  We have really strict building codes here and I need to pass an inspection before I can sell the house.  I’ve been working on the building code punch list the last few years.  I think the last things will be a new driveway then I should be ready to put the house on the market.  If the housing market drops any lower I might be ahead of the game by tearing down the house and just selling an empty lot.

Galaxy, my $55,000 house should be around $3,000.00 this year for taxes plus $540 for trash pick-up and street light privileges. Water bill will be over $644 for 2013 if I only use $20 of water. I live in a posh neighborhood where the average income is $25,000/year and the average home was built in the late 1940’s.  12 years ago when I moved in this was a really desirable suburb, the taxes were around $1,000/year on a $105,000.00 house, trash pick-up and street lights were included in our taxes, we had more than 3 traffic lights on the main roads and little shops lined the main roads and the water bill was only $200/year.

Good morning. It's 51° with 93% humidity. It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 76°.

Not cool enough this morning for the heater. Temp in the trailer is 68. No plans for today other than cleaning up the layout a bit IF nobody has me doing something else. So many things come up spur of the moment now that I can't plan my activities anymore. It's like I have a sign on my forehead that says 'Available For Service'. I'm so busy doing things for others that I have no time or energy for myself. If I just had a few days with no interruptions I could get some things done. As it is about the time I start on something the darn phone rings! Nine times out of ten it's my father wanting me (in most cases TELLING me) to do something for him. There's no planning to it. I can't work it into a schedule. Just whatever it is is important to him so it has to be done NOW. Things that I have to do for myself or things I want to do don't seem to matter. I just have to be at his beck and call and drop everything.

Well I shouldn't be putting my problems on others but it helps to get it off my chest once in a while.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and biscuits and gravy please. Thanks.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 64.

The old forum software/program whatever it’s called had our locations with our picture there on the left. I’ll add mine in my signature. It’s been mentioned a couple times and yah, it does help sometimes to at least have a general idea.

Didn’t get the plumbing done yesterdaySigh. New plan and I don’t know why I didn’t see it before. I was thinking there was no good place to cut into the drain pipe, but yesterday as I went down to fight with it I saw where there obviously is, so I went into Menard’s to get a new trap. YesEven blew the extra buck to get one with a plug cleanout so the hair wads and whatever else she does that has clogged or severely slowed every trap we have at least once. Of course the plug will probably sewer gunk itself sealed tighter than glue and become unremoveable by the first time I need to use itSad. Oh well, looks good.

Tom- Your plight with electronics is the same as mine. Probably like me you’re saying to the instruction booklet (and “saying” is a very mild and polite way of putting it) “I don’t care about all that stuff!!!...Just tell me which button to push to make it work like a TV!!!” BUT! Still easier than, remember those old VCRs where you had to manually tune the receiver in for each channel? Oh my gosh. I think I’d rather sit and figure out which button to push than that experience.

Jeffrey- Oh two medals! I see now that you’re a moderator you’re starting to put on the posts. 108 as of this post. Good for you! Glad to see you’re getting more involved. Oh and vent away on us. That’s part of what we’re here for.

Lee- Oh exactly. No corner in a house is square and no wall in a house is plumb, straight or even flat. Used to say the only good wall and corner in a house was the kitchen wall where the counter top goes. Don’t waste your breath saying that anymore. Unfortunately, this little venture required me to use the walls with no fudge room and blend into the wavy out of whack thing with flat unbending ceramic tile.

Brenda says all the while I show her what the problem is with what she wants, or should I say how she wants it,  “oh I think it’ll be ok. Yes, it’ll be fine” Then after a while (me being done of course) she comes back and says…”I see what you mean now. How do you fix it?” (demonstrates with hands and invisible person that I know the proper way to efficiently strangle someone.)

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

 Morning All!

 Flo, Coffee Pleases.

Running the trains and thinking about the interview I have today. Just hope it is a real job, unlike the one I have now. Plus, I hope I will not be on my feet as much.

So Ulrich, you are making the jump in scales. I hope you find hours of enjoyment in the switch.  Is it O scale this time around?

Taxes Well it seems my are not that bad compared to what I have read here. If I where to have to guess and my house was fixed back up it would be worth $160,000.00. My taxes are $2800.00 a year

  See you all later!

Todd there is no end to it so stop trying.  My Ex wanted me to put in a dishwasher, but first I needed to install garbage disposal since the old plumbing in the wall was the wrong height for the dishwasher adaptor, then I had to run a new power feed from the box to the back of the sink that required me to tear up the ceiling in the basement and install a switch in the backsplash, then install a new drain in the sink. Then the cast iron drain pipe broke and I had to replace that back down through to the basement floor.  Sometimes wives don’t understand nothing can be simple or cheap in an old house.

Ken we are talking about the tax value of the house, you don’t need to fix it up…

Good morning, all,

Coffee to go, please.  As of this morning my part-time job at JoyFM radio in St. Louis went full-time through an undetermined date in January 2013, thanks to the demands of two fund-raiser events, several concerts and our volunteers being stretched to the max.  God is good!  I'll still be making my weekly trek to DeSoto, MO, to do FCC-required routine tests on our sister station in southeastern Missouri and probably some more voiceover work.  Not as much time for railfanning but that paycheck will feel good.

Back to work!

Sometimes wives don’t understand nothing can be simple or cheap in an old house.

Tell me about it.  "While you've got your screwdriver out, could you replace the roof?"

I'm about to install 2 programmable thermostats.  My wife is on a "the house is too hot" kick, so I set it down to 58 degrees.  Unfortunately, I'm miserable, so I'm going to put a programmable one in the trainroom to warm it up before I get home from work each day.  The other one is for my office, where the old one is misbehaving.

I was looking at these things, and the first ones they want to sell you are over a hundred dollars.  They are Wi-Fi enabled.  Now, really, do you need a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat?  Looks like the same thing without that useless doo-dad is $25.  Remember the joke gift box for the USB toaster?

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a cup of dark roast coffee and a couple Bavarian Cream donuts this morning.  Thanks!

Just stopping in to say hi.  Have a full plate of stuff to do today.  Waiting at the moment for a friend to give me a lift to the dealer to pick up my pickup...

Need to mow more of the lawn, write my article for the Division Newsletter,  start getting things done for the 501c3 certification, and a whole lot of other stuff as well.

Catch you all later!

Morning All,

Hope everyone is well. I was hoping to go up to the LHS today but alas MOH has assigned me things to do so maybe tomorrow. Last night we actually had  to put a blanket on the bed. I believe it got into the 40's. It is supposed to get into the low 80's next week. Welcome to FL in the winter.

Ulrich- I look forward to  seeing your progress.

Well I hope everyone has a great day and prayers for those in need.

Now, Mr. Beasley:

You see, If you HAD the WiFI enabled one, you COULD turn up your thermostat WHILE you are leaving work so it WILL be warm when you get home!!! Especially if you get caught at work and maybe come home later than expected!
That is the whole reason behind the WIFI models!

Now I agree, we don't need THAT model either...
But it might be nice to turn on the lights and unlock the door from down the street with the handy-dandy WIFI gizmo!
Of course, MOH and I queston that if I {We} can do that with our schmartz phone, can't someone who steals my phone do the same?
The $25 one should be enough.

Gotta go to the dentist for a cleaning, and do some banking and get a script. Should be a pleasant day to be out today here? though its partly cloudy.

So best get going...maybe chicken soup for me tonight for dinner.

Hi Guys

Just getting ready to head into work.

The weather here is supposed to be rainy tonight and tomorrow so hopefully I can get some layout work in tomorrow ( heck, my cat spends more time on, or should I say under the layout then I do. Its makes you jump when she comes walking out under you and you didn't know she was even there, lol ) At least she doesn't go on it. Even If I can dust some structures and and clean some track and maybe do a bit of organizing I will be happy. Well talk to you guys later.

I'm notorious for eating bacon cheeseburgers every time grandpa and I go out so I'll take a Bacon cheeseburger, some fries, ranch and a root beer please, thanks jeremy.

took my midterm today feeling pretty good about my score that I will have. as for recently the trains may be sitting on the siding for a while, as Halo 4 was just released. but a GP15-1 is on it's way in BN roadname so my explorers that I bought may not look so out of place when an F7 is on layout.

 Evening Dinners!

Flo, why thank you for the Beer

Interview Well it went OK. Like most jobs there will be 2 interviews. Would I be surprised if I am not called back, no. Would I be surprised if I was called back, no.

When he asked what my strong suite would be, I told him paraphrasing so a none car person will understand why they need the extra services work. Then I told him how I up sale a better quality oil change to a female. Said "I never thought about that approach", and he liked it.

But, I am going to keep on looking.

Computer Geek Advices Needed. OK, it is a older machine and I am running XP Home. My old computer ran XP Pro, specks are not as good as the current one, but this one is no faster. The current machine has a lot of auto run programs on it.

If I turn off the auto run programs, will they start when click on them? I know the Words Program takes a lot of memory to run. When I was running a real old computer (windows 98 with a Pentium 400 chip and it was the fastest one made at the time) when I turned off the auto start for Words computer got faster and Words still worked when I want it to.

 Any thoughts on the subject?

Ulrich, ever think about HO scale again? If you did a American Theme switch yard, I have a few things that would speed up the layout prosiest. Whistling

Gary, glad you like the picture, I have posted it before. Need to get some new ones.

 See you all later.

 Ken
