Good morning everyone, Looks like a good weekend to work on the layout and some other related projects. It is wet and cold outside. I may run out and do a belly flop in our hot tub and soak a little while before starting.

Jeffrey, I have been following your latest project. looking great. Could you explain what the gallery is? I may have some ideas and I am sure others will also.

Sue, Thanks for the reply yesterday. I guess I could complain about my job like we all do at times, But after reading the posts of of so many people that are struggling and not to mention the news... I realize just how lucky I am and I am sure Thankful.

Last night I cleaned up my work bench and put some detail parts on a new Kato/BNSF loco I bought a while ago. Then I am gonna start work on a ship my wife got me for a early B-day present. I am trying to finish one project before starting another one. (trying...) have about 100 things started. Have a good weekend everyone!

Good morning, Diners.  Even if I am not at the top of the page, I will buy coffee for everyone, Chloe.  Make mine a strong dark roast, please.

Thayne,  Life is good.  I, too, love my profession, and even though I am very part time with 2 jobs, I plan to continue working until it is no longer fun.  As a dental hygienist, my patients become my friends so I look forward to caring for them.

Jeffrey,  Thanks for keeping us posted on your silo project.  I can't wait to see the end result.

Yesterday,  We had our BLS/CPR/AED update.  Current data shows that chest compressions and shocking the heart back into rhythm are the main parts of keeping the victim without a pulse alive.  I bet most of you don't think about that everyday.

Tonight, Larry and I have cajun cooking lessions with some other friends.Dinner

Angel Prayers for those in need.

Later,  Sue

Good morning ......  I parked at the far end of the lot because a Brinks truck was double parked by the front door of the DIner...... Galaxy and Sue said to leave big tips, and evidently, everybody complied. They needed armor car service! ....

Rob .... Ar you suing the "sports car" much withh all the work you are doing.

JP .... Glad you stopped by.

Flip ..... Glad you stopped in again!

Chris .... Is THAT editor being civil these days.

Galaxy .... That is interesting to have HO and N together. Actually, I've seen it where the N scale is in the background to force perspective and give the illusion of distance. Small layouts can be loads of fun. You can focus on only a few items, and making everything working smoothly. Are you thinking of adding scenery? A lot can be done with small spaces.

Paul .... Late Happy B'day.

Thayne .... What kind of ship model will you be building? Also, was your b'day recent. I'll say happy late b'day, but I don't know how late.

Jeff ... I bet your grain elevator will be a good one when you have completed it.

Sue ... You were talking about heart first aid. It has been 3 years since my heart was re-started 6 times. Doing okay now. ..... Cajun cooking sounds more fun.

Todd ... Any news on your "honey do" project?

I have lots of "honey do's" because we are about to have company for a few days. Presently, the MI outlaws are in Nashville with the TN outlaws. Tomorrow, both the MI outlaws and the TN outlaws arrive here. Of course, I will include a layout tour, and I'm busy trying to discourage visits of gremlins. The gremlins somehow appear only if I have company.

Morning guys.

A little late getting up today, as I stayed up late to watch F1 qualifying and the baseball playoffs. Was hoping to hear back from that place I applied too but I think its a bit early as she said they wouldn't be calling people until closer to the end of the month. Another place that pays decent called on Friday for a interview on Monday morning so I have that also.

The weather is nice and sunny right now albeit cool, but it supposed to get real ugly later on this afternoon and we are forecasted to get some pretty decent rain and that will stay with us until Sunday. I will be doing some work on the layout today for sure as I have alot of trees that need to be built and planted. Well im going to head off and get a hot cup of coffee and make some breakfast

Morning gang!

Zoe, how about a big stack of flapjacks, some bacon and some scrapple, sliced thin and fried crispy please!

(weird, spell check doesn't recognize scrapple ?)Question

I can walk today! Big Smile The toe & leg are improving quite nicely. Yes Ken, I am diabetic, and normally everything is under control, but I got a little lax with the care of a small nick on the side of my toe,,,, that's where it startedDunce.

Don't know where all this came from, but Midnight has been parked on my lap since I came downstairs this morning....now I know why Barry has difficulty with Spring on his lap while typing!! Wink Um,,you do allow furballs in here rightConfused,,,he's too fat to jump on tables, and he only eats tuna. He's not the spasmodic cat in my avatar (that's the wife's doing her Chessie pose), he's a more refined, mature Maine Coon mix. I guess he just wants some Daddy time...he's been purring nonstop since!!.

Well, were gonna jump outta here,,my youngest has to be at work this afternoon (16 year old pretzel jockey at the local mall) so I want to get a little yard work out of him before then.

Cya all later, I'll be back later to check on all and update the prayer list!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and oh let’s see…how about scrambled eggs, loose, mixed with ummmm, swiss cheese, bacon crumbles, chopped tomatoes, some green pepper, onion and just a tad bit of jalapeno. Not a Jeff tad bit either. Thank you.

Whew, it takes me longer to decide what for breakfast than anything.

A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 73.

Yup, we’re all talkin bout the same things when it comes to small restaurants. One thing came with this Italian Restaurant we have, the help. There’s a couple of us that do, when they are busy, get up and bus a table, clean it, even get or refill a drink for the waitresses. The out of town customers and even the ones who live here we call “transplants” (those who weren’t born here and juuuust never seem to grasp small town life) get a funny look on their faces, but yet a smile and some kind of comment when they see me get up and clear a table for them to sit, ask if they’d like a refill if I see they are dry and kinda looking, and even add their bill and take payment. Now yes I do w**k there in the kitchen, but I’d do it even if I didn’t because she’s a very good  friend. She’s also the daughter of a friend, the guy who owns the bar part I’m sure I’ve spoke of and…., extreeeeemely prettyLaugh. Haha. Just kidding. Well, she is very pretty, but that’s not why I help. Her Uncle and I are pretty much the last hold outs with that kind of behavior. Behavior that has fallen victim to the transplantsSigh.  Like I said sometimes they’ll say, (laughing) “boy…sit around and they put you to work here!” To which my standard answer is usually “ya, might as well do it on my own before she comes out and says “you know, you could help” all cranky, then I’m in trouble.... again.” Odd, people seem to appreciate, and even kinda like that, but yet these places are going away you’d THINK it’d be the opposite effect. Most times as they leave even if they weren’t the recipient, someone will say to either me or Annie, “ You/she got a pretty good helper there. That’s the nice thing about a small town…” or something similar. And some…., make some snide comment about the tip Grumpy.

And yes Ray, the food is always better than a chain. Well, there are exceptions, but generally speaking…yes. Always gotta try the meatloaf if they have it.

G- Not computer savvy myself. Ignorant is more the word for me. I didn’t have Vista, went from XP to 7. Probably keep this til the machine gives out like the last time….and the time before…and the time before….

Well, gonna have to stop reading because the rain is falling and now the thunder is clapping so the dog is standing in the doorway of the office, whining and groaning like you wouldn’t believe wanting me to go to the basement with her. Gotta do it or she’ll drive me crazy until it’s over or I do.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Mornin' everyone...  Yawn!...

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Buckwheat Pancakes w/ real maple syrup, a side order of bacon, and lots and lots of dark roast coffee this morning.  What?  yes the R&GV RR mug would do nicely...  So, who's the new girl?  Daisy?  Hope she is not replacing one of the regulars here.....  Oh, so many new folks, Vinnie decided to add a new waitress.  Well, good, I would hate to see any of you ladies not be here every day!  Smile, Wink & Grin

I slept in also this morning.  Didn't even stir until just a few minutes before 10.  After several early mornings and late nights in a row, I guess I needed the extra Zzz

Sun is shining outside at the moment.  Currently 44°F outside here in the Finger Lakes Region with a predicted high around 52° this afternoon.  I assume we got a hard frost last night as it was 32° out when I headed for bed around 11:30PM.

Karl, glad the leg and toe are getting better!  I had a bout of Cellulitis back in 2004 after being out at camp all summer.  Nasty stuff!  They came close to admitting me to the HorsePiddle to give me IV antibiotics.  Luckily the Horse Pills they had me on took care of the problem quickly.  I figure I scratched a patch of psoriasis on the back of the leg and inoculated myself that way.

Guess I will go see what trouble I can get into today with a few other things...

Later!

I am typing this on Petra´s little notebook, as Windows is getting installed on mine. How I hate that situation. I have to beg Petra for time on the computer, It´ll be ages, until everything will be up and running as I need Christian´s help for it

GRRRRR!

Have a good one (Petra is already waiting to get her computer back!)

ULRICH~ Computers, like women, you can't live with them, and you can't do without them!

Since mine just crashed, burned out and died, and we got this new one, I know what it is like..only we didn't have an alternative one to deal with. We WERE offered a "discount" on a second {or more} computer{s}. WE THOUGHT about getting a laptop, as we have for ages, but, we didn't really have the funds to buy two computers....we kinda do for this one,,,we WOULD have if the furnace didn't need $1025.00 in repairs too!

WEel,

I got new spinal nerve injections last Wed. so i am still a bit sore and careful/. I should be feeling pretty good by Monday. Always takes a few days.

SO, today {and the past few days} have been lazy days to me! PAINFUL, mind you but lazy.

MOH has a bad cold so has missed some days form work and that shortens our cash flow, darn it. but I'd rather MOH get healthy than struggle at work or get sent home with time off. Of course, they don't really allow for sick time off there. Since MOH is in limbo with health insurance, we are sure glad It doesn't look like a DRs trip is in order for MOH. We may have combined insurance that may drive up my $200 Medicaid cost for secondary insurance. It may double it if we are both covered under it. If we don't hear soon, I will have to go see what is going on with it. We are a rare case and causing havoc on the system and no one knows how to proceed in our case, so they have to "ask someone" on every move!

Sigh

Hi all,

Its cold here today.....not sure what the temp is ......

Had to go to the clinic after work Thursday to have my hands checked out......were both in pain with a temp. case of numbness and also in my right forearm too.

Turns out I have inflammation and swelling in the part of my hands below the thumbs ......the Doc said it will go away in time as I get used to swinging a sledge hammer.

Gave me Naproxen to take twice a day and I`m suppose to use a heat pad on my hands for about and hour or so each day.

I`m off today and tomorrow.....maybe I`ll work on the layout to get ready for open house in November.

One the subject of electronics, when you use two resistors, is the Ohms just added together? I ask because the resistors I use for LEDs work great in pairs for 1.5v bulbs. I just want to find 1 resistor that works. The only issue is I don't remember what kind of resistors these are, so I'd have to measure Ohms but would I have to measure anything else?

If wired in series, yes, Ohms would be added together.  If wired in parallel, it would be .... (assuming both have same resistance) half.

Well on the gallery for the grain elevator I'm playing around with the idea of using the cut down body of an EMD E6B as the basis of the structure. It's about the right length and gives me something solid to build onto instead of building a freestanding structure from card stock and hoping it's straight or doesn't warp from the humidity. I told one of my friends about this but all he can imagine is a loco on top of the silos, so it doesn't make sense to him. I call that lack of imagination.

Afternoon guys

The meet at the train club went well, save for almost getting sideswiped by a friends MTH Bicentennial Daylight. Lucky it would have been in the middle of a bunch of MDC and BB boxcars, not the P2K and IM stuff. I'm thinking of changing some stuff up. Probably put the F45s and SD45s up as they've been running twice a week for 3 hours at a time non stop. I'm thinking Gp15, GP38, GP38, GP38-2, and maybe a GP30. Depens on how soon I can put the beacons up on them, hard part will either be soldering (i'm not very good) or modifying older DW beacon castings. Best get started. lol

The date; well she actually showed up. And did she match her description, no. In fact, she was better. lol. We had a good time and have plans to meet up again.

Brad, thanks for the advice. Now I just have to measure these resistors to see what I need to buy. Hopefully radioshack has something very close to it. Is there a way to measure wattage on a resistor?

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good rainy afternoon, fellow diners!

42 and rain.

Ballasted more sidings today. Also joined an F-ABA together with styrene drawbars. They tested out great, and gave me  another 2 pair of KD #5's for something else. I took some pics but can't find the computer cord for the camera to upload! Ran some trains, found ANOTHER track issue and repaired same. Better now than when company's over!Wink

Good start on the silo house,Jeff! It's a solid starting point, I think.

The inlaws are coming for an overnight visit later. FIL has issues with his legs, the talk is of amputation below the knees. He'll find out after" exploratory/try to repair "surgery Monday. Circulation/vein problems.MOH is obviosly stressed a bit!

Happy B-days to those I missed!

Nice to see a bunch of new names here, too.

Is there a way to measure wattage on a resistor?

The package should be marked.  Wattage should meet or exceed the expected load on the circuit.  If you use an LED that draws 200 milliamps, then a 1/4 watt resistor should be sufficient.  Using a 1/2 watt resistor wouldn't hurt a thing, in fact, it would likely run cooler.  Dropping to a 1/8 watt resistor would overload the resistor in this example.  You could use 2 resistors in parallel to add up to the necessary load wattage (use double the resistance rating)... which mitigates the whole purpose of what you were trying to do.  Isn't electronics fun?

Jeffrey, Why not styrene? Looks like it would be a pretty simple structure to scratch build. I saw a layout some where, the guy used Duncan Doughnut boxes for most of his buildings after he enjoyed the doughnuts... and they looked great.

Garry, The ship I am building is a Great lakes freighter. it will be passin bye on the layout in my harbor (if it turns out??) It's a Bearco marine models kit, Their GLF-24 Kit. Take a look at their web site If you are interested. They have some nice stuff and they are very nice people. The kit was close to $500.00 ( after shipping) So I was debating on how bad I really wanted it. Earlier this summer I went to Duluth Minnesota and watched some of these ships coming into the port. I think they are awesome. Any how my wife and  her friend went to the casino the other night and about and about 2am she text me and asks how much the ship I want costs? Turns out she had won about $600 and she says order it for your B-day. Lucky me! My birthday is the 29th of Oct and I got something I wanted. That was very nice of her. There is a group of people on U Tube, Look up [Boat Nerds] and You can see some of the Great Lake Ships in action if you like them, I sure do...

Guess I will get busy. I spent half the day going store to store looking for a small disc sander, Looks like  Micro Mark is the one I am gonna end up ordering. The ones I found around here are way bigger and way more $$$ than I want to spend for what I need.

I could use sheet styrene except that I have to be extremely careful around sharp blades. I can get a nasty cut and not even know it until I start looking for where the blood is coming from. Been there and done that. So I try to avoid using tools with sharp blades.

Evenin' folks!

Chloe I'll have the BBQ chicken ***, a couple ears of fresh picked sweet corn, and a trip to the salad bar tonight.  A hot cup of decaf to wash it down with would be great as well...

Packer, you can tell the values of a resistor by the color bands on the side of it.  Try here: http://www.rfcafe.com/references/electrical/resistor-markings.htm

Been busy making up my yearly supply (or p[art there of) of my fire starters for the wood stove.  I make them out of old paper egg cartons.  They are already recycled paper and these make a good use for them rather than sending them to the dump.  My sister in Canadaigua saves her old candles (she always has candles burning all over the downstairs of her house whenever anyone comes to visit) and after she uses them a few times and they don't look just so, she puts them in a bag for me.  I melt them down using an old pot and a #10 tin can as a double boiler.  Some parts of the egg cartons are just dipped into the melted candle wax, and others (where the eggs used to sit) I pour the molten wax about half way up in.  They are cut using my band saw down cellar.  I used to have the Scouts make these as a "quick and easy" way to make their own fire starters for camping.

The nice sunny day around here turned into dark gray clouds about lunch time...  The 3200 watts I was getting from the panels went down to about 350 watts in less than a half hour...SighGrumpy  I was hoping for a good day today...

Catch you all later!

There calling for a crappy day tomorrow so will make a big breakfast for the wife and I and then head back down to work on more trees. Dont know If I want to try and stay up for the F1 race or wake up. I will never record a f1 race and watch it, I will always get up for it or stay up Stick out tongue

I'm doing a bit of work on the gallery structure now. I'm using my Dremel with a cut-off disk to cut the pieces from some scrap plastic kit parts. Making the windows will be the interesting part.

Been modifying my CB&Q Kato SD40 to have the correct sideframes, using the ones from a P2K SD7/9. They take some work, but they do fit well. Luckily the BLI sd7/9 sideframes fit the P2K trucks, using the kato pick-up strip. I've done one truck so far, and I still have to file the back of the step wells and cut the brake shoes off for clearence.

Brad, The resistors are from a bulk package of LEDs that I bought a few years ago. IIRC they are either 680 or 540 ohm, but don't recall the wattage. I don't understand a whole lot about electronics, so it's kind of like chinese to me. lol I'm using 1.5v 15ma bulbs if that helps, my track voltage is 12.

Ray, my head hurts from looking at that lol. I can't tell which end is which because the bands are centered. It goes like this though: | | | | | .

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

IndifferentSKUUUUUNK!!!! RUN FOR THE HILLS !!!!! SAVE YOURSEL........ Oh. Whew. Sorry panicked there for a minute. Oh, the white ones pretty.

I'll have one of them BBQ chicken knockers and a Dr Pepper please. Thank you.  What? Oh you can't say the "B" word in here so.....

(psst. Who's the new girl?)

Well, I made it back. Pretty good day today for me. It rained off and on all day so Brenda closed the elevator down at noon. Usually that's bad for me because she is standing over me "helping". But, since I already had the floor grouted and was on the tedious task of clean up, she pretty much left me alone. Now. We'll see how long it takes her to realize she wanted the floor grout to be a grey color instead of the white for the walls. Something I forgot until juuuuust about 4 hours ago. I'm keeping my mouth shut and play dumb. Then she wanted to go to the Chinese buffet. Yup. Shore did. No incidents though. Got this newer girl. She (Brenda) did question what ol Suki was saying to her and pointed over to us. Personally I don't think she pointed at us, maybe in our direction, but I didn't see it. Brenda refused a refill on her drink after that. Said she didn't trust her. Again, I laughed. Then it was a trip to Wally world. Ya, ya, I know. But hey, we have no local owned grocery stores anymore. No choice. Tomorrow, she is making pork ribs since the elevator is closed due to all the rain today. Reeeeeeally looking forward to that!!

Jeffrey, in Sundown there is a house on top a gas station. GE's sitting on Alcos. Alco's sitting on who knows what. Bachmans powered by Atlas's. And a wolf spider living in the fire house.  Why would you NOT have a loco on the grain silos. ROFLMAO!!!!!!! oh my sides hurt.

Anyway, just stopped in to give late Happy Birthdays, and prayers for people seriously in need of healing. Also Glad to hear a wife is still getting better.

And no Paul, Don't you feel a bit bad. Doctors need to talk to each other but don't. THAT little arogant quirk almost killed a friend of mine when they did all these tests and things for weeks watching most every organ in his body shut down only to find the original most asked and suggested by anybody you would ask without a medical degree, diagnosis for a severe pain in the side was indeed the problem. Gall Bladder. Yanked that out and he imprved almost overnight. Too bad he had to loose 60 lbs and almost his life. Feel not bad for questioning and stepping in. Were not talking about pestering the plumber about the faucet, it's your wifes life. They'll get over it when the bill is payed. Trust me.

Welp, raining again so I's a gettin sleepy. Maybe settle down in the chair and sip on a Dr Pepper in front of the tube.

Well, earlier this evening I put a couple of old Niel Diamond records (yes I said records) on the stereo to play while I worked on cutting the pieces I need for the gallery structure. The records are two of a box full that my parents gave me a couple of decades ago when I was living in my old Dodge motor home. Well I went to work on the structure pieces and the records played. I had it turned up loud as the stereo is in the back and I wanted to hear it over the noise of the a/c unit. There were no interruptions, no phone calls. Only the sound of the a/c, the Dremel and Neil Diamond. And these are OLD songs that he sang back when I was a kid. Presently the records finished. A couple of minutes later I got a phone call. Yeah, I thought, somebody's going to complain about it. What I heard was 'Play it again!'. Withing three minutes I got four more calls. 'Play it again'. 'Could you please play that again?'. 'I want to hear it again'. So even as I type this Neil is doing his thing again.

Now it's time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a refill for the decaf please...

"Play it again"?  Jeffrey, I guess we will just have to nickname you Sam from now on.

I got a bunch of odds and ends done today, one of which was to take down and dispose of an old "Spider Plant" from my Mother's collection after she died.  I did save a few of the young plants from it, and after they root will have the plant back in it's usually sunny spot in the dining room.  The old plant was completely root bound and had come up over the top of the pot it was in.  I've been putting this off for about 3 years or so.  Unfortunately it left a trail of dead leaves all over the kitchen and living room...  I didn't clean it up yet either!

I spent an hour or so today doing some more on the corner scenery in the rebuild area.  It will be in behind the tracks going to the staging area and will have a small waterfall that will just end where you can't see it, but will ultimately become a major cut in the foreground and create a good reason for me to build a rather complex bridge to be judged for the structures certificate (NMRA).  I also hooked up and tested out a dimmer control for the "way too brigyt" LEDs I put in lower staging.

I will be helping out at the R&GV RR Museum tomorrow most of the day, so I think I shall call it a day.

Prayers for all in need!

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, [B} Pleases

Am I just getting old and silly, or are they changing the schedule on me? I swear I saw where I was off this coming Sunday! I had the wife pull some meat from the freezer so we could BBQ. Today while we had a lull in traffic we where talking when we worked next and I stated to Eric (manager) that I was off Sunday. About a hour later he told me I work Sunday? Bang Head

Personally I think Eric forgot this Sunday he has to do the tire inventory. Whistling  Which means he will be tied up from 4:00 PM on scanning tire by tire.

New Guy Rob. I have the feeling he is not going to make it, this job will kill him! Honest to God, he is built just like Peter Griffin from Family Guy! Now I am fat, but my fat is on a 6'4" frame. I would guess he out weights me by 50 to 75 pounds and is around 5'9" or so. New shop is full of problems, one of them is the A/C keeps breaking down. In fact the repair company will not call back anymore, they have been out 8 times in the 4 weeks we have been open.

Show room get very warm even on a cooler day like today with it being all glass and facing the East. It was only around 78 to 79 degrees today in the showroom and poor Rob was sweating like he been working out to the Rich Simmons Sweating To The Oldies video.Whistling I turned the fan on him where he was working to cool him down some. Boy that was a mistake! Ick! Showroom got really ripe in a few minutes! Whistling

Health Front, if you want to call it that! When I got up this morning my to middle fingers knuckles where swallow (that does look right) and it hurt to move the fingers! I all most called off today but went in anyway. While they are still sallow-en (again, does not look right) they are not hurting and I have full movement of the fingers. Just seems odd, I feel like I has in a fight and hurt the knuckles? Maybe a spider bite?

Well Ziva is waiting for me and I bought a treat for dinner tonight. Dinner Bought some Sliders from White Castle! Boy it will be REAL RIPE in the showroom Sunday!  LaughSmile, Wink & Grin
