I certianly hope we get a COLA this year...gas here is $4.05 a gallon! I go absolutely NOWHERE if I don't have to!  and food,, everytime I go I am amazed at how little I come home with for what I spend.

I hope so too. Not being able to walk more than 100-150 feet I have to drive everywhere just about. My old van gets about 10-12 mpg, 14 mpg if it has a good tail wind. In my opinion the 318 was never designed to be an economical engine. It was intended to be a workhorse.

The CBO estimates COLA will be 1.3%. Seems a bit low to me because CPI as of August was up 1.7% from prior year. ..... Social Security uses September CPI numbers to compute COLA.

Terry .... Good idea to use drawbars on Bachmann F-units. If you installed diaphragms, it would also make them look closer. ... Do you have DCC in them?

Bob Seamonster.... I've not seen you here lately. Good to see you here.

Dennis ... I have one of those nibblers. I wish they would open farther for thicker plastic.

John - this place is most likely the only one, where it does not matter at all, in what scale you do your model railroading, whether you run on DC or DCC, whether your layout is freelance, protolance, or prototypical, whether you love steam or go for Diesels, in fact, whether you have a layout or don´t, or whether you are building one or plan to build, and last, but not least, whether your layout is static, anti-static, volatile, moving or flying.

W e are just a bunch of folks, meeting here to communicate about the day, within the rules of the forum and in all due respect for each other.

The Diner has some, say, peculiar things about it and I bet, Galaxy will let you into the details of them. So, please be Welcome, take a seat and join me in a Beer or Drinks, or a Coffee.

Welcome By ALL MEANS!!!

A few pages back I printed a list of the Diner's "RULES" for the "newbies". They are really few. I am the self-appointed "Rule Master" as I always get asked to post the "RULES" for the newbies when we  get a bunch. If you go back a few you will see them clear as day.

I am also the "keeper of the flame"- the one who keeps a prayer candle lit as often as possible for those in need of prayers and special thoughts...the ONLY "religious aspect" allowed in here! It doesn't need to be of religious origins to have special thoughts for someone's ailing or passing. I really do keep a lit prayer candle as MOH { My Other Half}, in ministerial duties, does so if it helps anyone. If someone needs real extra special prayers for themselves I wil light one and say an extra prayer for them.

Now... as to the secret handshake and the secret knock....

Thanks Garry, and all 3 are powered and DCC. I'll have to look into diaphrams. Cool idea ! Do any of your F's have them, and if so where did you get them? Install easy or rough? Pictures?

Welcome, John!

Boy, do I dislike ballasting. Did about 6-7' of sidings. Kind of a perfectionist so it took forever! I got right down to look without my glasses on, probably woulda been fine anyway. Not as good of job as Ray, but I'm also partial to the 3' rule. Oh, well.Laugh

Hmm...A one percenter..gee I can buy another loaf of bread a month then! Oh, and maybe a pound of butter to butter said bread with...

SKUNKS? in the DINER?? Yep! They have been visiting here quite a while..he posts pics  sometimes so people know he DOES have skunks...de-skunked of course!

Boy do I ache. GOt the injections the last Wed and not yet feelin' the healin'! My left knee is not any happier than a day camper deep in the woods who forgot the picnic basket and insect repellent! I know what the Dr will say..."loose some weight"...Gee when I was a drinker all my problems were cause of that, then when I quite drinking manymany years ago, it became the smoking was the cause of all my troubles, now that that monkey has been off my back for nigh on 8 years, it is the weight {some of which I gained after quiting smoking, mind you}.I wonder WHAT they will blame if I manage to loose the weight? The air I breathe?  Oh I pay for that already..in the O2 machine at night!

MOH and I have noted that there seem to be a lot of people in their 50s passing on. We don't know if it is our imagination, or for real that there seems to be a lot who pass young-ish like us. MOH theorizes that maybe after WWII that "something in the air or water" might have caused things to go awry?. Radiation from the bombs maybe? Dunno. It just brings one's own mortality closer when people your own age pass who are not really that old...{well to a 23 y/o we are "older than the hills' at 50s.}. Both of us would hate to loose each other so soon. Sigh

Well, I have rambled enouhg and getting late {for us old folks}.

Have a good night all!

Cheers!

Evenin' folks!

Flo, just a slice of the pumpkin pie with a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream to go along with a mug of decaf, please!

I had a good day out at the museum.  Spent the day as a museum guide as they had plenty of people to man the trains.  We had a bit over 250 people there during the day.  Good number for us. A lot of families with small children.  We also had 3 or 4 of us as museum guides.  One is a member who has just moved back into the Rochester area from the Big Apple.  He was having a great time with the visitors and took over tours for everyone as soon as they got off the cabooses.  I had a very easy day.....

I think i shall do a bit of reading up on bridges in a book I got recently from Kalmbach.  Unbeknownst to me the book was partly written by a good friend of mine Harold Russell.  It is way b eyond me at this point, but if I sit back and digest it, I may learn some things about bridges and how they were built by the railroads.  Too tired to do anything with the layout.

Later!

Hi Guys,

Nice and warm out there right now, its 17C but this time tomorrow it will be 6C.

I have that job interview tomorrow at 9am so hope it goes well. Didn't do much train work today as I have done alot lately and am feeling a little burned out model railroad wise. I get like that every now and then as I will work on it alot for a few weeks and then need to take a month or so off. Maybe work on my RC tanks or just give any sort of modelling a rest. When I get like that I tend to play video games in my free time, lol

Evening guys

Kinda busy day. Worked, then had an impromitu meet at the local club. Then I came home and started working on that Kato SD40. I got the flexicoils 1s on, but it won't turn. I'll have to sand some of the backs of the steps off and cut the foward brake shoe. Maybe I should have painted it for BN instead of detailing it for C&S. lol

twcenterprises

If using 12 volts supply, 1.5 volt, 15 ma bulbs, I calculate you need 700 ohm (or higher), 1/4 watt resistors.  Higher values will give a bit more voltage drop, and slightly less light, but should make the bulbs last longer.

Brad

Thanks. I went by something NCE put out on one of their decoders and it didn't light at all. After reading that I pulled some 820s in my box of electronics stuff and they work, but kinda bright for beacons. I may see if radioshack has 1080 or 1360 ohm ones. if not I hope the bulbs last a while with 820s.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good Evening All,

Local season is done now with our last race this year at Lime Rock Park. It was really cold for race cars Sat morning 26 when I got to the track at 7am. Lost one Fri (Austin Healey 100/4 - gearbox - no spare) and another Saturday morning (Lotus 11 S1 - engine fault). Got to try a potential customers Devin Chevy to evaluate it. Scary car but lots of potential.

Did chores today and watched the Jets and Giants and the F-1 race but no layout time - just not motivated right now.

Welcome John (and the other new faces I see). I model the New Haven in HO but volunteer at the Danbury Railway Museum including the model group which means playing with N, HO, O and G scale trains. along with 1:1.       Catch Y'all later, J.R.

 Evening Dinners

Flo, I will take a Beer please and put John's tap on my bill tonight.

Welcome to the Dinner John. I have watched some of your post with interests. Your modeling skills are far beyond where I ever hope to or want to be. My layout is at the closes point is 6 feet from where I run it. So to me this looks as good as I need.

If I remember correctly you had some amazing shots of a WW I air craft hanger you built! Feel free to post them and other pictures as well. Pretty much goes here in the dinner as far as pictures.

Work Front Boy I was LOLMAO (to my self) today when I was talking alone to our Peter Griffin. (new salesperson named Rob) Get this, he saw me looking at my commission report and asked what it was? I explained what it was and I had made $108.00 in two days extra in commission. I all so explained that everything he has sold, I am receiving because he does not have a employee number yet and has to use mine. Big Smile

He looked a little Confused confessed so I asked him what where you told you could make? Poor smock was told he could expect to make $500.00 to $700.00 a week in commission and plus is base pay! Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh  Boy if I could get close to that I would not be wanting to leave! Whistling Told him my best week was around $309.00 dollars and I had to work 55 hours to get that. (I was the only salesperson) All so told him a normal week I make a extra $130 to 150 extra and a good week is $180 to $200 extra.

My guess is he is done for! Oh, he was getting $500.00 a week in unemployment? Whistling He is screwed!

 See you all later.

Signing off early tonight. Weather guesser said earlier we had a 20% chance of light rain tonight. Sure can't tell it here. It's coming down in buckets and the winds gusting to 20 mph or more. Big thunderboomers moving through and the satellite dish is blacked out.

Worked on the elevators gallery a little. I knocked together six wall sections. Two on each side and one on each end. It doesn't look like much but it's a start.

Power is starting to do strange and not so wonderful things so it's time to shut down. See y'all tomorrow if I don't get washed away tonight.

Evening everyone. The weather was terrific here in Pittsburgh today. A little overcast at times, but temperatures were in the high 70's. In other words, a perfect day to get in a little railfanning. Caught 5 Norfolk Southern's in 2 hours. One mixed freight had a very interesting consist. it was made up of the following:

GP22ECO - GPTEB SLUG - GP40-2 - RP-E4C SLUG - RP-E4C SLUG - GP40-2

To be honest however, I had no idea what they were when i saw them. I looked up the road numbers on the internet when I got home. I have a hard time telling the difference with all the upgrades and modifications that Norfolk Southern does. One nice thing that NS does is put the model number on the cab. But it was hard to catch them on this train because of the number of engines and the fact that he was moving right along at a good clip. Also caught quite a long double stack. Had to be at least 150 well cars.

Watched a little football after we got home, and then had a nice dinner. A Delmonico roast, baked potato, sweet peas and a bottle of reisling. I'll be going to bed a happy person later this evening. Hope everyone else had a great weekend.   Tom

Janie, just a refill on the decaf please...

I think I shall head to bed as I can barely keep my eyes open.  Several short nights this last week are catching up to me I guess.  I also can barley move after the day at the Museum.  Was not a hard day, but did spnd most of the day on my feet standing chatting with visitors.

Sam....  Google the Movie Casablanca.  "Play it again Sam" is a miss-quote from the movie.  I was attempting a bad joke.

Tom, sounds like a fine dinner you folks had tonight... Especially if the reisling was a Finger Lakes one! Smile, Wink & Grin

Tomorrow I shall do some very badly needed house cleaning I think.

Have a great night!  Prayers for all in need.

[edit]  Looks like I have top of page, so Janie just keep a tab for me and I will take care of it in the morning.  Midnight snacks are on me folks!

SAKEL SAM...when I Was 14, back in the middle ages, MY mode of personal transportation REQUIRED NO GASOLINE. It got as many "miles to the gallon" as I gave it. It was blue and had 10 speeds from very low and slow to high and fast. It was called....a bicycle.

My current vehicle gets 21-22 MPG and Does have a 20 gallon tank. Pretty darn good for a minivan.

sam, do you even know what a COLA is without looking it up?

Well, I am on cause I got up late in the night to use th er um facilitoes.. Not going to start a "morning" war just yet...

Good Morning Gang!

Looks, as if this is going to be a nice day today here in Fishtown, Germany. The morning coffee tasted, nice, my computer is up and running, there will be some MRRing time today - what more diversion can a man desire?

Flo, I´ll have another mug of coffee, please!

Anyone is welcome to join this place, it is not a private group! Most of us communicate for years now, so we know a little bit about each other. Elliot´s Diner is the place to meet and chat about the day, on topic or off-topic, but within the rules of this forum. Mighty fine folks in here!

Again, a big Welcome and have a Coffee with me!

Have a good one!

Burlington Northern #24

just curious can one just jump right in and join this discussion or is it a private group?

Step RIght Up..and a big fat Welcome to you!!!

Anyone can join. Just jump in and chat with us..we won't bite! You'll get to know who are regulars around here and who are mere visitors.

The waitresses will gladly take anyone's "money" or "credit card" for "food ordered".

Just be on  the lookout for bouncers like cousin Vinnie... he can bend crows bars one handedly!

Talk about your day, life, aches and pains etc.

A BIG FAT Welcome to ALL the recent Newcomers!!!

Here are the rules for the newbies:

There is only ONE Diner here

No politcis, religious or other flame war topics

No foul language..including squiggles {##&&%(} ... as my mother used to say {may she rest in peace} "you can find a better way to express yourself". This IS still a family site and we DO have younger readers in here!

If you post pics, our hosts prefer only one or two, any more and they like you to do it in the Weekend Photo Fun page {WPF} {something about bandwidth or something}

You CAN post pics that are NOT MRRing or Train related, but NO RISQUE pics!{the family thing again. of course and we respect that highly}

NO RISQUE Jokes!

You CAN post about topics NOT MRRing or Train related

Tell Us about yourself if you'd like!

Tell Us about your day/week/month!

If you get the top of the page posting..you have to "buy" all the posters on the page their meals..."money" or "credit cards" are accepted...and remember a 10% TIP is a cheapskate, a 15% is a OK tipper, and 18-20% is a good tipper!

ALL our food comes with NO calories, NO cholesterol, and Is always prepared just the way you like it or the "way MOM made it".

NO pinching the waitstaff...the bouncers will bounce you!

The diner gets moved once a month {again that pesky bandwidth business} to a new place in a new month. So search the last day late or early next day for the NEW diner!

That about covers IT!

Oh, the one religious thing allowed is to have special thoughts and prayers for those here sick, ailing or passing or family/friends doing so. I keep a prayer candle lit often as part of MOH's ministerial duties, so I am often asked to light a special one for somebody here. I do so if i can in real life. One DOES NOT need to be religious to have Special thoughts for someone ailing!

Start the Morning, PLEASE!!!
