Good morning.

Smart phones? .. My new one is smarter than I am.
Lee .... I agree with your list, and suggest you post it in the new forum format thread with language consistent with constructive criticism. ... Also, Lee ... I clicked on your name and it shows your email address. Do you want that public?
Barry ... I agree with you also on the new format. You, too may wish to post your thoughts in the thread with that topic.
Ulrich .... I hope thye do bring back some of the good features.
In the thread I said Kalmbach should have communicated better about the changes and why they were done. Also, I said they should have surveyed members about what they like and do not like.
Sue ... I did not know NWSL moved, but now I see they are in MT. Is your state one of those high tax states? I suspect it might be.
Ken ... Each of us will gladly encourage you to change your habits regarding smoking. We care very much about you. ... I like your photo with the steam locos. You may wish to paint over the pink foam at a later date to improve this great scene.
Todd ... How often do you have Asian food? A lot, evidently.
James ..... Happy Birthday !
Does anybody have plans to work on their layouts or trains in the next few days?

Good morning. It's 81°, humidity is 56% and it's partly cloudy. There's a small chance of rain today. High is expected to be 92°. That should feel like 97°.Well, my nephew told me yesterday that he'd be home this morning and ready to go to work on the tractor. I really didn't believe it but decided to give him a chance anyway. As expected there's been no sign of life over there and he hasn't put in an appearance. I've about had it with that crap!Nothing on my schedule today. I'll probably do some cosmetic work on some locos.

Well well
Up LATE and right off to the shower, grocery store, the bank. the pharmacy, the free bread line down the street, WHEW!!!
Now I think is time for a nap.
Ken-no one is picking on you about smoking. Those of us {me included} who have quit KNOW how tough it is to quit...we only WISH YOU WELL in your quest! It IS hard but after awhile, you will notice everything touched by tobacco {walls, carpets, coats, clothing} will STINK!! And anywhere there are smokers you will be AMAZED at how BAD it stinks! let alone what it is doing to your lungs and body! You can cheat yourself at sneaking cigarettes, but your BODY WILL suffer for it! I can hardly breathe after doing the simplest of things...hence the reason for checking my blood for clotting and for blood clots in my lungs..and I already take O2 at night, If I were still smoking,I'd hardly be able to do ANYTHING!!! Well, anyway, we WISH you well, and KNOW you will be testy, snarl at us and growl all you want as you quit!!!
SO,, now where was I?
Oh yeah..NAP TIME!!
Oh, yeah, Happy Birthday to the Birthday boy {in case I forget tomorrow}!!!

I guess I am coming to age. For me, a telephone is there to make or receive a call, not to surf the web, take pictures, shave, read a book, watch a movie. I don´t like to look at a minuscule screen - that´s straining my eyes.
When I came home Monday afternoon, there was a 22" monitor on my desk - my son´s birthday present. It is now hooked up to my notebook. Believe me, it is much more fun to look at pictures or watch a video on a big screen!
Garry - sure, it would have been nice if our host had conducted a member survey on the needs and wishes, but I have my doubts that there would have been a common denominator I am not unhappy with what we have now - there is better forum software, but also worse. The key "objection" I have is that those light gray and blue colors make things difficult to read. Most of the complaints we see have their origin in us old farts not adapting to change as quickly as we should.
Garry, yea it's ok for my email to be there, thanks for mentioning it.

Ulrich: I'm something of an old curmudgeon when it comes to certain functional scenarios...I guess. I wouldn't have minded if there was some kind of a survey before the change but considering the amount of guff that would have appeared it might not have been very informative.... As for the monitor...that is an excellent size for one as well...it really does make a difference between permanent eyestrain and comfort....

Afternoon guys
Life's been a bit less busy as of late, so I've had time for MRRing. I would go out and do some painting, but we've been getting more rain than Seattle, try a rain storm that causes minor flooding every day for a few weeks straight... I can't even mow the lawn because of the constant rain. I'm saving up for a big order for myself to MBK to advance quite a bit on the F-unit project. Might get some other goodies in the order too. Hopefully it will get here on the 27th.
My car (94 mustang GT) is starting to seem a bit strange to me after driving my brothers car (94 mustang cobra), but not in a bad way. It's at just under 230K miles and about 19 years old with most of the original stuff on it. (intake, exhaust, and injectors are the only changes to the engine itself) still runs great. I drove my brother's car (180K miles, same age and mods as mine) and apparently my brother's is a slug compared to mine. Gunning my brothers cobra in the rain doesn't spin the tires, but mine tries to do it when going above 1700 rpms in first, 2300 in second, and sometimes in third. I have about a second on his at the track too. I'm kind of perplexed by that, but mine in all likelyhood was taken care of and my brother's was beat on a lot (it even looks kinda beat up up close, mine you have to look for evidence of age on the body)
Ken, Since you seem to be a bit annoyed about the smoking thing, I'll hold the story of my grandfather.
James, happy B-day. Looks like you are only 4 days older than me. My birthday is the 27th.
Ulrich, is your birthday the same as mine?

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
Yard freshly mowed, ugh. Body freshly showered, yeah. Nap ready to betaken, maybe.
Garry- We eat Asian food at least once a week many times two, occasionally three if I eat alone, like today, and have for.......hm, I guess ever. Even before I was married probably twice a week. I probably ate more Chinese food as a bachalor than most others ate pizza I bet.. Chinese is my favorite ethnic food, in case you haven't noticed, so we lean towards that. But Like Japanese, Thai is one food I haven't had much other than a time or two. They use peanuts a lot (or so I thought), which I don't really like cooked in food, reminds me of boiled peanuts and they also use alot of coconut. Another thing I like raw, so to speak, but not really in things you eat as food other than deserts. Coconut milk, a big ingredient just makes me gag and that says alot considering. But what I had had neither so I gave it a whirl and was very pleased. I noticed their menu didn't list but a couple things with coconut milk and or peanuts so the options are real good.
But TONIGHT we're going to Elkhart with a couple for fried chicken. Yuuuuuum YUM!!!!!!

Good Afternoon All,
It has been a few days since I have been on here, so a few updates.
Wife is still nauseous and has not even started chemo yet. We have an appointment at Stanford Clinical Cancer Center in CA next Wednesday. Early report is she has a rare form of this Lymphoma, only 20 cases a year in the US. It is supposed to be treatable, but who knows. When at home I have been staying close to the baby monitor so I can hear if she needs me. So no running of trains. Still designing the balance of the yard tracks though.
Ulrich, glad to see you back.
Ken, quitting smoking is easier for some than others, just hang in there and you will succede. I quit in 2004 right after I had a mild heart attack and double by-pass.
James, Happy birthday.
Jeff, that video of the speeding loco reminded me of when I was a kid and tried to see how fast I coud make my trains go.
Prayers to all in need.

Evening All,
About all I did today beside laundry was install 6 Caboose industries ground throws. I still need to install 2 more but need to buy them. I joined the JMRI yahoo group and have already learned what I need to do to be able to use a Win 7 64 bit computer with the PR-3.
Ken- I think everybody is pulling for you and care what happens to you.
James- Happy Birthday
Ulrich- Good to see you back and saying prayers for your health.
Lee- It looks like the storm has moved west a little. Hopefully it will keep doing that.
Todd- I really like Thai, Japanese and Korean. Picked up the taste for them in my travels.
Paul- I am saying prayers for your wife.
Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Good Evening Diners!
Another warm, as in 88F, day here so summer is hanging on longer than usual. Mind you there are a few leaves turning yellow which is early for that but we had a very early spring so the trees went into leaf a month earlier than usual. I guess that means the leaves will fall early too.
Strange day here on Sunday. We had friends over for dinner and one guest complained that he had a sore right shoulder. It seemed to be getting worse and just before we sat down right at 6, he told his wife he wasn't feeling too well. My wife and I told him to get over to the hospital asap as it is only a 2 minute drive from our house. He was worried he'd have to wait in emergency but I told him not if he's got chest pain. Sure enough he had a heart attack. He was then taken to another hospital where the cardio unit is and had a stent put in, returned back to the original hospital ICU all by 10:30. He had a blocked artery and they found he needed 2 more stents which went in today. Luckily no damage to his heart. He is a lucky fellow.
Garry,I thought of you tonight as I was programming a decoder that had a CB&Q 5 chime whistle as the default. Not quite right for an 0-8-0 so I changed it to something less dramatic. Those loksound decoders are really fantastic, especially the motor control.
I think it is time I got back to working on the N scale layout as it is stalled at the scenery stage. I have quite a few structures to build too.
Well time to think about bed, so best sign off for now.

Things are not always as they may appear. The loco in the photo below appears to be a modern plastic Bachmann 0-6-0. It's not. Oh it's a Bachmann 0-6-0 all right but it's NOT plastic. You can see some nicks in the paint here and there and what's underneath shows through. The tender is plastic though.Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
Almost 7:00 PM and the temp is 94,and as things would have it Mr Murphy showed up in my a/c unit. The fan in the house runs but the outside unit just sits there. Will have to call a repaiman out in the morning.
CN Charlie, sounds a lot like my heart attack in 2004, major difference was I did not feel bad at all, just a kink in my left shoulder/neck area. I needed a double by-pass, but like your friend no damage to my heart.
Need to go sit under the fan in the family room.

Charlie, glad to hear your friend will be OK! Just not the kind of story I need to read tonight with me trying to stop smoking. Well OK, guess it is with it having a good outcome.

If you ever wondered where the phrase "to blow smoke up one's butt"...here it is:
Look below, read and learn.
Tobacco Smoke Enemas (1750s – 1810s)
The tobacco enema was used to infuse tobacco smoke into a patient’s rectum for various medical purposes, primarily the resuscitation of drowning victims. {did it work??}
A rectal tube inserted into the anus was connected to a fumigator and bellows that forced the smoke towards the rectum.
The warmth of the smoke was thought to promote respiration, but doubts about the credibility of tobacco enemas led to the popular phrase “blow smoke up one’s Butt.”
Perhaps that would be why "oh, go blow it out your butt" means to RELEASE the smoke from one's butt!
Have A GREAT day!!!
Good Morning Gang!
It´s going to be a nice day, sunny, but not too hot and humid. Poor Petra has a dentist´s appointment ...
Janie, just plain coffee for me, please.
I started to dig into family history this morning, as I have nothing else to do. Unearthed a real treasure.
The lad in the middle of the boat of this 1938 photo is my dad, then aged 11. The gentleman sitting to his right is his grandfather. The old lady behind him (last one to the left) is my dad´s great grandmother, who was born in 1854. This is the one and only picture we have of her. Unbelievable that she is Christian´s great great great grandmother...
The picture was taken south of Berlin, during a family trip on the occasion of her 84th birthday. When she was born, Germany had no "Kaiser", it did not even exist as a nation. In that year, the Crimean war started and Florence Nightingale founded an organization to help the wounded (not yet the Red Cross). In the US, the Republican Party was founded. In the same year, a chap named George Eastman was born (Kodak).
Thrilling!
Have a good one!

Gee, ULRICH, your bit of trivia, along with mine, makes for a pleasant morning of either learning something new, OR of being reminded of something one already knew, or being amused by something worthless to know!!!
Well, Well
things to do today include finish laundry, do bedding, scrub out oven {it smells when I bake and the tinfoil under the heating element needs to be changed}.SO busy busy.
MOH has some errands to run before going to work. The least of which involves putting the pay check in the bank {for safe keeping, naturally}, and getting a new WORKING remote control for cable/tv.
Well, best get at it.
Have a great day, folks!!!
Good Morning All,
In some of the other forums the primary gripe is people posting their weather conditions; so not to deny some of the forum populace of their opportunity to complain: 63F, 727% humidity, Hi today 84F.
Ulrich, that is a very cool picture, did you find that on the internet?
Paul did you check the outside breakers? There normally is a small power panel on the outside of the house with two buss fuses or a 220 breaker where the outside unit connects to the house. I recommend shutting off the main breaker (yea the whole house) before checking the outside box since each side of the box is 110 volts. If you’re not handy with electricity then wait for the repair man, if you touch 220 it normally holds on to you. Sorry your wife is ill, but hopefully the Doc’s can give her something to calm things down for her.
Curt I see you have a second storm that might swing up along the Atlantic coast and it’s brewing about 3 days behind Isaac. Do you keep window plywood handy? Is amazes me the number of people I knew in TX that would pay to have their windows boarded up then discard the plywood after the storm passed just to hire another contractor to do the same thing 2 years later.
Todd, I didn’t know you were close to Elkhart, IN.
Good morning, Chloe. I black coffee to go. I am meeting a friend to go climbing today.
Lee, There was a day when I worked that much, but no more.
Garry, Washington state has never been that business friendly. Sales tax is one of the highest.
Later, Sue
Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
Good Morning!!!
Coffee and um, oh what would be good. Hm. Surprise me. Thanks
Sunny, with a high near 94.
Heeeey! Learned something already this morning. Gonna be a good day. I always say, any day you learn something is a good day. Thanks G.
Lee- (looks out window) I didn’t know I did either! I Don’t think I moved. Unless you mean in relation to Moscow, then yes I suppose I do live near Elkart Indi…..OH!!!!! ..I get it.
Elkhart, Ind / Elkhart, Il. (shakes head) A bit slow today. Didn’t get much sleep last night coughed til almost two.
Ulrich- Great picture there. I know I spent days going through all the pictures from Mom’s. Enjoyed all the time I spent.
If what we say in this thread annoys someone, and they know it, why do they even click on the thing. I bet they are the ones who wrap their fingers around the door, try and close it, smash their fingers and just keep doing it, all the while complaining that someone should do something about the door.
Silly people, don’t they know Trix are for kids.
Today I shall…..don’t know, but an effort will be made to install new faucet. Still trying to get enough free time to make it worth going to the trainroom to start cleaning up that disaster area.
Ya’ll have a good day!!!!
Lee - my cousin found it in my aunt´s belongings and sent it to my dad. My aunt passed away 4 weeks ago.

Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, ah, no donuts don't seem to appeal to me this morning after Galaxy explained THAT phrase........ Guess I will have the bleuberry pancakes, short stack please, and lots of dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR Mug.
Ulrich, only watched the first 10 minutes if the movie (I'll get back to it this evening), but that first old girl appears to be leaking steam in a lot of places she should be..... Gorgeous, simply gorgeous! Love old family photos as well. How great to have it in your possession now. Glad you are back! You have always posted some of the most interesting things...
On the other hand, for those who stop in only to get their days worth of annoyance.... Currently 74°F under sunny skies heading toward a high of 83°F later this afternoon. According to the weather channel we received 0" of snow in the last 24 hours. The sun rose at 6:27AM and will set this evening at 7:57PM as normal for today.
Got a notice in my mail yesterday from the Postmaster via the mail carrier. It seems my mailbox is "Too Far" from the road. Now it has been in exactly the same spot for at least 30 years as the pole sits right where it di the day we moved into the house! However when the city repaved the street earlier this year they paved straight from the corner down the street and didn't pave by my mailbox where it had been paved before. Evidently the mail person doesn't like the bump to drive over to where my mailbox has been sitting all these years. So today I will rebuild it so that it looks silly but does what they appear to want it to do...... The box itself is rotted through and I was going to put up a new one anyway.
The good news is I heard from the Solar company and they will start the install on Sept. 4th. looks like all is go for it. It should take no more than a couple of days to install and then a couple more weeks for the NYSEG inspection, the Firechief to inspect it with the Code Officer, the independent electrical inspector to inspect it, and most of the neighbors to inspect it....... A few weeks after that NYSEG will mosey on back to authorize the connection to the grid and then closely monitor the system for a few more weeks to be sure it doesn't cause any problems with the electric supply in the area...... Just in case. When the people from NYSEG come I will try to sell them lottery tickets on the pool for when the old Utility pole across the street is going to fall down. It has been held in place for 3 years now only by a plastic rope. The pole is broken off at the ground and was "replaced" back 3 years ago.....
Ken, yes we are picking on you about the smoking issue! We like you and want to see around here for many more years.... Please kick the habit!!! Think of all the money you will have to spend on trains! I quit smoking cigars and pipe after my 4 year old son embarrassed me in front of the family asking why I told my students to not smoke but I did? First thing I noticed was I felt better. Second was how much $$ I had for other things left at the end of the week. THAT was almost 40 years ago.
I best get moving as there are several must do items for today.

Good morning. It's 78° with 73% humidity. It'll be partly cloudy and rain is possible. The high will be 92° and will feel like 97°.Not much planned for today. I just have some cleanup to do on the layout.Last night I installed a coupler spring on a Kadee #119 shelf coupler that had lost it's spring. I used nothing more than a tiny drop of super glue gel and a small screw driver. Great fun! NOT! Definitely not something I'd recommend to those with anger management problems.I have an Athearn 50' boxcar that'll probably get some of my attention today. It's way too clean. One of my GP7's appears to have a loose connection to one of the trucks so I'll have to open it up and see what ails it.
Hi everybody,
Somethings are just hard for me to imagine. A couple of days ago I came across an article on the US aarmy's website which brought back a lot of memories.
FORT HOOD, Texas (Aug. 21, 2012) -- Iconic, dependable, reliable, tough, a workhorse, an air cavalryman's steed. All were used to describe the UH-1 Iroquois, affectionately known as the "Huey," during its retirement ceremony, Aug. 18, at Robert Grey Army Airfield, when the 21st Cavalry Brigade (Air Combat) conducted a ceremonial airlift with the final three UH-1s remaining in the active-duty Army.
Huey's have been flying for over 56 years, a remarkable record I think. It's hard for me to believe that I served with a helicopter company in Viet Nam 46 years ago. We had four platoons, two of slicks and two of gunships. Plus a Command and a Recovery aircraft. Working and flying on these aircraft was a wonderful experience. Hard to see them go. If you were ever around them, you will never forget the sound of the main rotors smacking the air.

Morning All,
Have all the windows open and a nice cool breeze right now. The high will be 95, so it may not be too bad.
Lee, I checked the breaker and it was not tripped, the repair guy asked me the same question. The earliest he can have someone here is Monday morning. I will have the fans going all weekend long.
Ulrich, that picture is great. I love going through our old photos and finding stuff like that.
The Stanford Cancer Center sent me a list of hotels/motels that offer discount rates for their patients. Since my wife is not having a great day I am taking the day off, and will be spending a good part of it finding a nice reasonably priced place to spend a few nights next week.
I may get a chance to do some work on the layout.
