Just called Roto Router,,,they gave me the "sometime today" routine...but I weaseled a "probably not til the afternoon" out of her...which probably means just that...I will have to sit around today.
MOH took Grand Caravan in for routine maintenance...the Kia goes tomorrow. MOH came home with a headache..must have one was supposed to go shopping after Firestone but didn't go! DOesn't hurt my feelings any we owe Wally world a lot anyway.
MOH is actually on vacation now. SO we have a whole week of nothing to do and any plans we had where it cost money is sort of eaten up. The vehicles will have $160 in maitnenace done, the rotorouter was $89 last time {4 years ago} they were here so probably now $100, SO thats $260 down. MOH has said the lawnmower is on last legs for sure sp we will have to spend probably another $200 to get new mulcher mower. {MOH does lawn only as I can't with my asthma}. SO that is $460 out the window that COULD have gone for something else in the vacation line!
We were going to go to Essex Conn. to see/ridet h steam train there, but at a 10 hour drive that makes for VERY LONG day of driving for MOH {the better driver who can read road signs far in advaceof me} so it woudl be overnighter, adn MOH would liket o go one day, stay the night, ride the train/steamboat the next, spend the night, then drive back casually. that is two nights put up and 3 days total. HTe train has a dinner car ride at $70 /person/4 course meal I'd kinda like to do. Dunno havet osave money for it next year I guess...we will ahve to settle for a trip to Steamtown...I can get us in free with my disability USA Park Pass. See what they are up to this ear..costs only 1/2 tank gas and a $12 check at Red Robin DIner for eating afterwards.
Train nut friend is putting on a deck, so he may not go with us. He is broke too. He wants like a 16'x25' or somehting deck and was shocked when it came out to double the cost for the materials than he had planned...so hes broke now..I said that is why you start of with like a 10x16 deck that is EXPANDABLE {his is on the ground} so that you don't bankrupt yourself doing it! Oh well, tsk tsk, he never listens to our advice.
WEll, MOH napping I may join while wiating the phone and RR to come {Roto Router NOT rail road}.

Gonna be another scorcher today here in the Finger Lakes region of NYS. Currently 81°F and going up to the high 80's this afternoon. No chance of rain today.......
I will be going to the Planning Board meeting tonight to see how the project goes. Will also meet the guy who put together the system plan as he will there to answer any questions about it.
Sue, removing tortoise machines is easy. I just unscrew them from the plywood substrate on the layout and remove the wire connections at the Terminal Strip. Much easier than putting them in place. I use a mounting system where the torti are mounted on a small piece of 1/4" wood (plywood or wainscoting I had left from a house project). All the connections to the electrical strip on the tortoise are connected to a 6 position terminal strip mounted on the base before mounting the assembly under the layout. It is then a simple job to make the connections for power and the frog from there. The assembly looks like this:
I have have given a couple of clinics at NMRA Meets on the subject. I have found in the rebuild, it is smartest to mount the tortoise in place before installing the turnout...... Much easier than trying to find that little tiny hole in the throw on turnout.......

Afternoon everybody,
Yesterday turned out to be a pretty good day weather wise. After many brutal days of high temps and humidy, it was in the low 80's, overcast and a nice breeze. So off we went for a little railfanning. Caught 8 Norfolk Southern's in a little less than 2 hours. Mostly mixed freights with 2 intermodals. After that, we came home and later had a nice dinner of a Delmonico roast, baked potato and cream style corn. You know we had to open a nice bottle of Reisling from Prejean's Winery in Ray's back yard.
Today we went for breakfast, then spent the rest of the morning doing the weekly grocery shopping and running other errands. The wife is doing pretty good with her new ankle brace. I think I will feel like I'm forgetting to do something for a couple of weeks, as we have no Doctor's appointments until September. It's been a very long time since that has happened. Well, I've started the weekly laundry, so I better get down to the cellar and start another load. Everybody have a good one. Tom

Well I got my prescriptions renewed, went to the pharmacy to get them filled. Got everything but the nexium for my gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Seems the insurance company requires a physicians approval for it to be dispensed . Geezz! The doc just wrote the dang prescription not fifteen minutes earlier! I'll have to pick it up the next time I'm in town. Last month it was Avodart they needed a physicians approval on and in May it was something else. What do the bean counters do? Sit back and throw a dart and whatever it hits is what they require an approval on? Dang bureaucrats! Can't live with them, can't kill them! Well, at least since I've taken my meds I feel a bit more normal now and don't want to rip the head off of the next person who calls or knocks on the door.
Got a thunderstorm moving in so I'll be backing out of here. See y'all later.

Todd, I eye dropper alcohol sometimes. The trick to misting is to use a giant spray bottle and pull the trigger slow and steady. Yes I have amazed people at the club with my misting prowess, I use the home depot 99 cent spray bottle, I think it’s a one quart bottle. The little bottles develop volume at high pressure; the big bottles develop volume at low pressure. I use cardboard to protect sensitive areas.

Today has been busy; turns out yes, I am being paid $5.14…oh well, still covers gas. We’ll see if the county still has money for the program though. If they don’t, hopefully we can work something out.
On the model RR front, I’ll definitely be going back to the switching layout idea; I can also say it will have a similar feel like Jon Grant’s Sweethome Alabama in that it will have staging, a passing siding on the other side, and then switching in front of that fiddle yard. Still need to hammer out the design

Here I sit watching the clock..... Have about a half hour before I go downtown to the Planning Board meeting. When I got the mail this afternoon I noticed a very fat envelope from NYSEG along with the Ads and other junk mail. NYSEG has approved the application for the Solar Installation and says go ahead! That leaves the meeting tonight as the only real hurdle before it starts. Of course it has be approved by NYSERDA for the grant, but if NYSEG has approved it there should be no problem with NYSERDA.
Rob, Glad you got good news about your Brother! Will keep him in my prayers for an easy recovery.
Vincent, all my days are "odds and ends" days I think. I still have a couple phone calls I need to make after I get home tonight, and a few emails to answer. I did get a few minutes in the train room and cleaned up some cork roadbed where the new turnout will go. I may get a few more minutes down there later tonight.

I got the P2K SD7 to have LEDs and a 1.5v bulb, but I can't figure out the function re-mapping. I looked on my computer for decoder pro, but apparently it was deleted by someone else That and the decoder seems like it just constantly looses it's address and doesn't respond until power is cut-off. I think it's the decoder, but I'm gonna try a few things first.

Todd, As far as lightening, I've added an aluminum driveshaft so far. The newer suspension may have saved a few pounds (shorter but stiffer springs) but I could cut some more if I get one of those rear seat delete things. I've only had the rear seats in use a few times in the 2 years I've had the car. I weighed my brother's (his car is the same year) rear seat assembly and the whole thing was 45-55 pounds (but his are leather and mine are fabric, so might might be lighter). If I did I'd save the seats though since they are all in excellent condition (they look new, even though they are 19 years old). The spare is aluminum (and I need to get a bigger one for the newer brakes), so not much I can do there. The engine going into my car soon might be a bit lighter. If I had the $ I could go for an aluminum block (yes there are aftermarket aluminum ford 302s) but it would cost more than the car. If I don't spend any $ on trains, I might be able to get aluminum heads by that time.

I had a little mishap when I was leaving the docs office today. It could have easily been very serious but I didn't think much of it at the time as I had more important things to do. I went out and opened the drivers door of my van and stepped up onto the step with my right foot as I normally do, grabbed the steering wheel in my right hand and the door armrest with the left and pulled myself up then put my left foot onto the step then lifted my right foot. At this point all my weight was on my left foot. I hadn't noticed it was on the edge of the step as I can feel only bone pain from the knees down and from the elbows down. Well my left foot slipped off the step and headed for the concrete. My right foot got a good purchase on the step but it was too late. Gravity was doing it's work. It's about sixteen inches from the step to the ground, maybe a little higher. My foot slammed down hard on the ground and I pushed myself backward to avoid hitting my knee against the step. It was very close. I felt a jolt of pain shoot through my ankle and I knew the bones had been effected in some way.The pain quickly faded and there was no bruising or popping. I just looked again and still no bruising so it looks like I got away with just a scare.My good deed for the day. I pulled up at the pharmacy and saw a Buick Century, same color as mine was. The lady it belonged to and her daughter came out of the pharmacy at that time. I told them I had owned one almost identical to it and had sold it when it was sixteen years old due to repairs I couldn't afford to make. Well she said the radio in hers had gone out and she was looking for another one. Told her I'd be right back. I looked behind the passenger seat of my van and there was the factory radio from my Century. It was working fine when I took it out so there was no reason it shouldn't now. It was identical to the one she had. I handed it to her and she handed it back saying there was no way she could pay me for it. I handed it back to her and told her she didn't owe me a cent. It was hers. Well the look in her eyes and the big smile on her face said it all. At that point she was probably the happiest person in town.I took my meds when I got home around noon and I'm a little dizzy right now. That's more or less normal after I've been off them for a while. Even a week can make a big difference. It'll take me a few days to get used to them again. I can already see a difference in my dexterity. Can't hold a screwdriver steady yet but it only moves a quarter of an inch instead of an inch and a half. I should be back to normal by this time Wednesday.That's all for now. That's enough.

Home from the Planning Board meeting. After starting 5 minutes late and a lot of questions and a couple of them not liking the contrast of colors that will be on my roof (give me a break!) they passed the resolution unanimously so as soon as NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) comes through with the grant $ we are all ready to start the installation.
Probably looking at another 3 weeks. Hopefully they will be on the roof and working by the end of August. THAT should bring on the rain and cloudy weather.
Now to disappear to the trainroom for a bit....

Temperature has dropped from 107 last week to 81 or so this week. The Delta Breeze (our natural air-conditioner) has kicked in, and we're supposed to be in the '80's all week, with a slight warm-up this weekend.
The fire near Colfax has grown to about 2500 acres, but it's 30% contained right now, and the cooler weather has increased the humidity in the Sierra's, so the fire crews are starting to get a real handle on it. Of course, this is nothing like those disasterous fires in Colorado, but because of the terrain and the thickness of the timber (the Sierra are far more 'tree-heavy' than the Colorado Rockies), any forest fire in this country is a major disaster just waiting to happen. So far, the fire has stayed away from any population centers (Colfax, Iowa Hill, Foresthill) and only one home and 4 outbuildings have been lost, but ground crews are still having to fight an exhausting battle because of the steepness of the terrain (the canyons have anywhere from 60 to 80 degrees of slope). Calfire is hoping for containment sometime near the end of the week, weather co-operating, of course.
Well, got my 4-10-2 painted and have started the weathering. I did the same thing I always do with my unpainted brass steamers, and that's a rattle-can of Floquil Grimy Black, brush-pianted contrasting colors, Microscale decals, Glosscote and Dullcote and AIM self-adhesive weathering powders. I gave #5011 a kind of medium-light weathering. I know that in the early to mid-'fifties, SP's steamers kinda/sorta looked like rolling junkyards while they were using up their last miles, so I backdated #5011 to what it would probably have looked like around 1949 or 1950: In use, but not 'let go'. Here's some photos:
I have to change a little of the weathering on the cab roof and the bottom of the cylinders--what I thought was 'dust' turned out to be 'yellow' instead. Looks like someone threw some pineapples at the cab, LOL! One nice thing about the AIM powders, they wash off pretty easily and I haven't sealed the weathering yet.

This afternoon i managed to get together with some friends at the restaurant near here for a coffee and didst discover that there was a small problem with a car beside me..door access is somewhat cramped when buddy parks car about 9" from mine....had to find driver and ask him...politely ...to move his car so I can access mine..got a big lecture from him on MY parking skills...find out after I left parking lot that he took my spot AND another to park....ooooch number 3....

I just read that a couple of my old Middle School students from way back when have shown up in their home town (Geneva) for a film shoot with the crew from VH1's Behind the Music. Yep taught both of them. Not sure if they learned a whole lot from me, but both Travis and Matt were good kids that I enjoyed teaching.... They did pretty well for themselves after linking up musically so to speak in a high School Gym class of all places.... Our grandkids are back home now, but I won't be on a normal schedule yet.
Today, I went to Nashville, TN to my heart doctor. Next week I see the heart surgeon. The week after that will be surgery. This will be my 5th heart operation, and it is more extensive than my other 4. So, I expect to be resting throughout August. Generally, I have been doing okay, but this is something needing to be done as soon as possible, By September, I should be okay again. I am very thankful for extra life I have received because my various heart treatments in recent years.
