It is actually closing in on lunchtime over here. Petra is in the kitchen, cutting onions... . We will be having pizza for lunch, with tuna fish, onions, cheese and lots of other goodies. We have stacked up on pizzas, as they were on sale some time ago. One $ for a frozen pizza is certainly reasonable, but you still have to add something to make it taste nice.
Did some finishing w*rk on the deck of my boat, which is up in the attic, after I gave it another coat of varnish. The hull is completed, and now the fun part starts. As I want to use the boat in a dock scene, I cannot rig up the sales as described in the "instructions", which are hardly worth that name. Will need some time to figure out how to do it.
Along the assembly, I have learned a few lessons and a number of new four letter words. Why is a craftsman kit called a craftsman kit? Because it is not a kit with parts ready to assemble - you have to fabricate them somehow out of the supplied material. While doing that, you´ll revert to some "crafty" expressions, which forum policies won´t allow me to state here. I found out, that the value of such a kit lies in the quality of the supplied lumber and the instructions. Both are pretty bad in my case. Most of the supplied lumber was of inferior quality, with a tendency to split when cut. The instructions supplied are incorrect drawings, the text hardly gives a clue how to do it. Best of all, this kit is rated as a beginner´s kit, suitable for children from 8 years and onwards. That´s a joke! Without a lot of experience and a comprehensive set of tools, there is now way to turn this kit into a good looking model. Should there be a next time for me, I´ll just get a set of drawings and start from scratch!

Jeff- Excellent lighting on the picture you posted yesterday morning. Makes that building look very real. In fact for a second I thought it was. Then my eye caught the crane and the wheel thickness. Two things you can’t control of course, but the picture and the modeling itself are very convincing. Oh, I’m talking about the first picture. I do like your old layout. Especially that your trees are more actual height. The advantage of not store bought. You had a lot of natural light then. What’s the difference. No roof? Welp, the counter dude shows up in about oh, 35 minutes at the time I write this. Then I have laundry and a bunch of other things to do around here. Should keep me busy and f course, out of Toddland (of which I’m king) Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Morning All,
At home today with some chores to do. MOH called off today since she was unable to sleep last night. Have to do laundry later and go do a security check of Mom & Dad's house since they are on vacation. Later I will do some photos and probably try a video of the layout (panning across it), I'll see how that turns out. Next month I think I'm going to get the Dice camera people have been talking about on another thread.
Ulrich- I sure feel your pain on the instructions. I feel the same way about several cornerstone kits.
Barry- That was a great photo last night. Is it out of a movie?
Ken- Was that your car with the CUDA on it?

Jeff - yes, I am sure I will figure out a way how to get the sails where I want them. What annoys me about the kit is the poor quality of the lumber. A lot of the "parts" are just cheap strips of fir, prone to break and split. I have replaced some of them with oak and mahogany a friend gave me. That leaves me with that tremor in my left hand, which makes things really difficult to deal with. Add to that my aging eyes ...
It´s a challenge. I just gave the hull another coat of varnish, so it should be ready for another set of pictures by tomorrow.

Good morning. It's 68° and cloudy with fog. The high should be 82° and there's a 20% chance of rain.No plans for today other than thinking of what kind of project I can clutter up the layout with. Currently I have no projects to work on.

Well, the grocery shopping is done and the wallet is $150 lighter, or will be when the CC bill comes in.
MOH went to snoop at the store to see what the dept. manager is doing for amunition against her. MOH found paperwork and She is claiming MOH is "insubordinate" any time she feels like it apparently! SHe is known as the "wicked witch of the EAst', and maybe deserves the title! SHe would like to see MOH out of the dept. and is trying to force MOH out.
MOH is up to something else I think that will make me very angry, but I cannot express it here.
Well, I think a nap is in order.

Got up early this morning for the guy to come back and do the second coat of mud on the sheetrock. He is considering getting into model railroading... A mutual friend (he is refinishing the basement for the guys G scale empire rebuild) still has a lot of n scale he wants to sell. I didn't tell him how addictive the hobby is. He will come back late this afternoon and put the last coat of mud on the joints. I have to get a plastic barrier up to keep the dust out of the other layout room so he can sand it tomorrow.
Sun is busy shining here in the Finger Lakes at the moment. In fact they say it should be shining all day until sundown in these parts. Current temperature is 49°F with a high of 58°F this afternoon.
Guess I will see about how to put up the plastic sheeting to best protect the older part of the layout. Later!

Just a quick update on the boat:

Well, here I am again at my parents place. I came down to look for some boat parts for my father. It's a pair of cushioned wall panels that fasten to the inner side of the boats sides but neither I nor my father can think of the name of the part. So I took the time to hunt up some more old layout photos. This phase of the layout came after the other one so it was started in the latter part of 1999. I don't remember exactly when these photos were taken but it was definitely after 2002. My parents had internet service then and it was before I joined any forums. The background I used I downloaded from the net. The upper level is still intact so these are pre-Katrina. By the time Katrina and Rita came through the upper level was long gone and the track on the lower level had been relaid. Here are the photos:The top of the tunnel was unchanged except for the removal of the weeds and twigs. The entire top could be lifted off as one piece to allow access to a six foot tunnel for maintenance, recovery of derailed equipment and fishing out the cat. It was one of her favorite hiding places. The structures on the top of the tunnel were lit. The wires from the top section plugged into an outlet in the tunnel.
The crane car is an old Tyco toy left over from the 70's. The underside and trucks were long gone so it's sitting on a boxcar frame and trucks.The embankment was made with pieces of white foam with thin pieces of white foam pushed into the gaps. The 'plateau' was hollow an dthe entire town section lifted up to reveal an access hole. The town structures were lit so the plug underneath the town section had to be unplugged for the town to be lifted off. The roads were made with pieces of poster board. They had a nasty habit of wrinkling whenever the humidity was high.The red structure was a ceramic house I found on sale at a gift store.The tunnel portal was made from Sculpy modeling compound. It was the one and only time I used Sculpy.

Got off at 3:00 PM, so this is the other half lives? I could get use to this, coming home and being able to see the house! But, it was just today, Thursday I close again.
Curt No that is not my Cuda. Personally I do not like the paint scheme, but would not mind pulling the wheelie! My 1970 Cuda is pretty close to stock, well compared to my other cars that is. Has headers, DB 4 intake, Holley 750, MSD 7AL, nasty 727 transmission with Hemi clutch can, TCM 3500 stall converter and 3.23 Sure Grip Rear End. While it is easy to drive with it stock cam and heads it will still run a 14.01. Not bad for a warmed over 383 that still can get 15 MPG.

Puttered around a little today. Glued some figures around the coaling tower, glued some bushes down, and made "empty" coal hoppers. I have been trying to decide how best to do coal hopper filling for operations so I decided to make all the cars I could empty (residual coal on bottom) and then pull them into the tower, fill them, (put loads in them) and pull them out full.
Ken- That is a sweet looking car.
Jeff- Your old layout was awesome. I don't think I have ever seen your current layout in it's entirety.
Ulrich- Very nice looking hull. To simulate being inport I would think that if you wrap the sails around the horizontal sail support and tie them to it they would look like real life.

Woke up to a beautiful morning on Seneca Lake. After a hearty breakfast in Watkins Glen, we hit the road for home. Another easy drive in very nice weather and arrived home about 3:00 this afternoon.
Ray - I'm sure we will be able to get together one of these trips. I was hoping to make arrangements with you for our scheduled trip this past October, but that went out the window when the wife broke her leg and blew apart her ankle. Cancelled those reservations as well as ones I had made for the train show in Timonium. This trip was really a spur of the moment thing, so I wouldn't think of trying to impose on you at such short notice. But I'm sure I would enjoy the SLOW as much as my Reisling.
