galaxy

well, here's a happy thought:

My area, is considered the least optimistic and most pesimistic area of the USA!!!

FOr those who want to know more here is a link to AOL with the story:

http://realestate.aol.com/blog/2012/03/15/binghamton-n-y-nations-most-downbeat-city-poll-says/?icid=maing-grid10%7Chtmlws-main-bb%7Cdl11%7Csec3_lnk1%26pLid%3D143814

Sigh

Where do Americans have the most hope?

In U.S. cities, that place is Provo-Orem, Utah, where 76 percent of residents say their area is becoming a better place to live, according to a Gallup poll released on Tuesday.

The findings show the Utah valley's metropolitan area closely followed by Lafayette, Louisiana; the Raleigh-Cary, North Carolina area; and Huntsville, Alabama.

Howdy, everybody !

It's been busy here with non-model-railroad stuff. ..... Tomorrow will be a long drive to Detroit area with a stop in Cincinnati on the way. ... We have a load of stuff to move, and so I'll take the truck. Not looking for ward to the expensive fuel. ..

Jeff ... I've seen the IL village on line. It looked nice to me.

Galaxy .... Well........ you will have to take charge of things there and make everybody more optimistic. Actually, I don't think surveys like that are meaningful. People are basically the same everywhere.

Ulrich ... The ship model is looking great so far.

I might be off the computer a few days.

Cheers

Evenin' folks!

Janie just a cup of decaf, please.

Galaxy, you did notice the survey was done during the flooding last year.......  Yep, I think the people in Binghamton had a good right to pessimistic at THAT time..... Huh?Whistling

Had a great program at the R&GV RR Museum meeting tonight.  One of the members showed a series of 16mm film movies from the post WWII period promoting how absolutely wonderful the rail companies are and how the nation couldn't survive without the most important form of transportation known to man. In retrospect it is quite easy to see through the propaganda.  The railroads were fighting to survive as the Federal government had pulled most subsidies from the railroads and used the $ to build the interstate system.  Had a lot of great old steam and early F and P unit shots.  Wonderful scenery as well.

I hope by tomorrow evening to have the first coat of paint (wallboard primer/sealer) on the new backdrop.  I have to take the Yaris in for service and inspection when I go to feed my sister's kitties tomorrow as well.  So i won't have a lot of time down there.

Have a great night all!  Prayers for all in need.

Evening all!

Sorry about my recent absence. I've gone from busy to busier. Lacrosse season started in the beginning of March. It's six days a week, so I have significantly less time, particularly on school nights.

I'm still waiting on the whole college thing. Not much new news. The only thing is that I got my complete aid package from Rutgers (only the second school to get it from). The total cost to go there is about $7,000 less than to go to Northeastern, my top choice. With that, it looks like other schools will end up costing about the same. This pretty much puts Northeastern out of the running, since money will be the deciding factor. However, no decisions have been made yet, and won't be until I have all the information in front of me. I can still hope...

Other than THAT, not much else going on around here.

I'm pretty sure that, by this point, everyone has heard about Norfolk Southern's heritage unit program. Well, today, they released the first one! NS "Conrail" ES44AC 8098 came out of the Altoona paint booth in an authentic "canopener" scheme! Aside from a few minor things (such as the NS reporting marks below the number, and using the standard NS font on the cab numbers), they did what they said and painted it in a historically accurate scheme. It looks great, and I can't wait to see the others! Here's a roster shot (not mine):

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150627982784315&set=a.111336769314.98388.111336324314&type=1&theater

I don't have school tomorrow, so I have a more-or-less easy day ahead of me. Late morning, I'll be heading over to the United Railway Historical Society (URHS) yard in Boonton. I'll be working on restoring some old equipment (not yet sure exactly what, so I'll just have to wait and see). I signed up as a volunteer almost a year ago, but have yet to get a chance to go down there. I got an email that there'll be a work session tomorrow, so now's my chance. Can't wait to get my hands dirty on some 1:1 trains! I'll try and get some photos.
After that, it's off to lacrosse practice. Not sure about how I'll be spending the rest of my weekend.

Well, that's about it for me. Catch ya later!

-Joe

 Evening Fellow Dinners!

 Flo, Beer Please!

Work Front was pretty uneventful today. While we where some what busy for awhile it was mainly Oil Changes. Got a few add on sales, but did not add up to a lot. I am real disappointed in my sale. Only $9100.00 for the 6 days. What really kicked my caboose was Tuesday. From 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM I did not have one customer? I only had $54.00 in sales that day.

Could Dave (manager / area supervisor) be a model railroader? Tonight when I was in his offices  putting the deposit in the safe I saw 4 framed pictures of Steam Engines laying against the wall! Hum, going to have to ask him about that!

Looks like I have another 2 days off in a row! Guess my wife will want me to cut the grass. Grumpy

Ken, your Cuda hides all that power well - wouldn't guess from the outside what all it has underneath. Pirate

Ah Jim It has Hood scoop's, hood pin's, Hockey Stick Stripes that say 383 and a Go Wing on the trunk lid? What do you want, a Tunnel Ram sticking out the hood? Smile, Wink & Grin Hum, that would look cool. But yes, I try to keep my cars bodies, paint and interiors stock looking. But any thing under the hood (with the 69 Charger Blower Hangs out of the Hood) goes.

Psst Ulrich. Your ship has sails, not sales. Sales is what I am trying to do for a living. By the way I all so built the model of the USS Constitution. I love that model and it was a bear to build and I could see when I was 14! When I joined the Army Dear Old Mon gave it to the home town Library along with about 50 hard bound books about WWII. Angry I was not a happy boy!

Well, time to see what Reruns CBS.Com will watch me watch tonight!

Galaxy, you did notice the survey was done during the flooding last year.......  Yep, I think the people in Binghamton had a good right to pessimistic at THAT time..... Huh?Whistling

Regadles of when it taken, this line about says it all:

"As to the reasons why, The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin suggests that the weather and economy are valid reasons for pessimism..."

The weather here, {as with anywhere else}, is frustrating. Did you know that according to NOAA Binghamton is ALSO the #3area in the country to get the "least amount of sunlight-days" per year? The cloudy palor that sets in during winter adn often during the rest of the year keeps it that way.

Of course there is the continuatio of the above line that " Seasonal affective disorder, which can bring on bouts of depression typically in the winter, could be a contributing factor, but Binghamton's malaise is also a product of its residents' outlook. "The community is rather conservative and not very open-minded," psychologist Benjamin Perkus told the Press & Sun-Bulletin. "So it's stuck in the old paradigm of big industry, which is gone now."

We have long been known as "sticks-in-the-mud' and "conservative views", thanks to the like of IBM, Endicott Johnson SHoes, and Singer-Link employees on a "straight and moral track". Ha.

Neither of the quoted lines say anything about the flooding, and that was  an event, not the overall demeanor-producing deciding factors.

I have lived in other areas of the country adn can attest to the cloudy factor here! If it weren't fo r the aging parental units here, we might be someplace else!

Oh well.Bang Head Sigh

Good Morning All,

Sir Madog said: “Et tu quoque, mi filii Brute!” “I am not having fond memories of that”

Ulrich: how old are you??  Oh sorry fond memories of school, never mind, LOL.

Todd: I picked up 12 gondolas last train show, but that will be ok these are from Harley’s layout.  He fine tunes everything before it even enters his train room.  I will repaint these to LS&W colors.

Inch: I’ve been paying $3.77 to $3.98 for diesel all year, now it’s at $4.17, I do get 26 to 36 MPG but still if it keeps going up we will fall into another recession.

The train show at Lakeland College is tomorrow!!  I’ll be there at 0900 for the 1000 opening…

Galaxy, you want to visit the most pessimistic place on earth?  Stop by Cleveland during football season!

Good Morning!! From cheery Williamsville, Illinoyz. Third happiest place in the US of A. First is Luckenbach, Texas of course and the second is someplace else where I can’t remember. But, it’s also probably somewhere in Texas. Aaaanyway, Coffee and a slice of breakfast pizza please. Make that two thank you.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 82. South wind between 6 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Today is another day filled with odds and ends.

Got an update from Menard’s on the “Special Order” faucet she wanted. Left either Ontario California, or Canada. Whatever CA is. I’m leaning towards California myself. Coming UPS to our door and no shipping. On schedule and should arrive by the end of the day Tuesday, March 20th so they say. I hope she likes this thing. Looks weird to me and it’s a Pfister brand. I’m more a Moen or Delta guy myself. If it leaks or wears out it’ll be on her and not me at least.

Oh who am I kidding. It’ll still be my fault somehow.Sigh

No word from Lee on his little trip to the show?  He's probably hiding in the closet trying to hide all his purchases. Between you, me and the fencepost.....I think he's an addict. Tough thing to beat. I feel sorry for him. Ashamed

OH!! Guess what!? Came home last night to paint color samples laying all over. Yup. Looks like the kitchen/dining/ hopefully former oh look there’s an empty space let’s put it there rooms are going to get some paint. Betcha didn’t see that one coming didja? (sarcasm) Huh? Guess I’ll have something to do here in the next two weeks it takes for the counter tops to get here. Going bold with some other color other than white. She’s leaning toward…(gulp)…ready for this?…Cream in Your CoffeeConfused. I call it a light tan or light beige but then I don‘t get the big bucks for coming up with names for colors either.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

EDIT: I see Lee has checked in. Hm...only 12 gondolas. Maybe he is coming around. Unless that's all he's fessing up to. We'll see how hings turn out at this next one.

Lunchtime!

Zoe, I´ll have a club sandwich and a diet coke, please.

It is sunny outside, temperatures at a soring 15°C! Birds are singing - Spring has come to northern Germany!

I am taking a time out on building the boat, as I am just not in the mood for it. I am more of a trainman than a boat builder. So this will be a lazy day.

Lee - my ID card tells me I am going to turn 56 this year, when I run my trains I am 7, for the job market I am 90, and there are days when I feel like 150.

Ken - did I write sales? Who? Me? Of course, it has to be sails, or could you figure Rod Stewart singing "I am Selling ..."? Must be getting old - see my comment to Lee... Whistling

Btw, gas is at $ 9.03 a gallon today! I am seriously thinking of selling our car and try to get one of these:

It gets about 75 mpg, is a Diesel, seats two and a shopping bag, and I know Petra is going to hate it Smile, Wink & Grin With the little driving we do, it should suit us fine.

Have a safe day!

Gas is going up everywhwere. It is most likely to be $5 by Memorial day here. Many countries vie for petroleum as we deplete the world reserves. they are nto sure it will go higher later in the summer as they think people will definitely travel less.

Airline ticketsare expected to double, both for spring break and the summer travel season as fuel prices rise.

Those little put-puts look cute, but over here people are finding out that in stronger wind situations they tend to get blown too. ANd at highway or autobahn speeds that could be dangerous situations!

That is the bad thing about them. Also over here the Toyota Pruis Hybrid gas-battery car is supposed to get about the same as the Smart car over here, which was disappointing about the Smart Car 2 seater. Here they would hold about 3 grocery bags, but heaven help you if you need to take more than a carry-on on a  road trip!!

Oh well, we should have had cars getting 50MPH about 15 years ago and now looking at 75 MPG instead of "50 MPG average vby 2024" or whatever the gov't wants now.

MOH has the dentist today and I have scripts to get, but other than that, nothing much.

Just a little story to share so that others might learn the convenient or easy way is not always the best way.  Most of have heard that children should ride in the back seat, and they shouldn’t ride in a front seat with an airbag. This happened to a friend of mine as she was traveling in a minivan the other day.  She placed her 5 year old daughter in a booster seat in the front passenger side of the vehicle for a quick trip to the store.  Not far from home a deer stepped out in front of the vehicle causing her to go off the left side of the road, through a mail box, then a garbage can, then a brief visit back to the road and then she departed the road, through someone’s front yard and removed a large section of tree with the front of the minivan.  The tree will recover but the minivan was destroyed and firefighters worked over an hour to remove the top half of the vehicle to extract the mother and daughter from the van.   Life flight transported the mother to one hospital and the daughter to a children’s hospital. “Mom” suffered several internal injuries and a completely crushed elbow as she lay across the vehicles seat to protect the daughter from the airbag and/or hitting the windshield right before impact.  Mom is awake in hospital “A” and unable to be moved from intensive care to see her 5 year old daughter who is in critical condition in hospital “B”.  Mom has had 2 surgeries and awaiting another for her elbow that might have to be completely replaced by a mechanical joint (if they can save the arm).  Her daughter is under a chemically induced coma and has had two emergency surgeries (one to relieve the swelling in the brain and remove skull shrapnel from her brain when her skull was crushed. The second to treat her bruised lungs, broken ribs and other internal injuries and she is going into surgery again this morning to straighten the part of her skull that was curved inward due to the impact and to patch up the fractured skull.  Doctors don’t know if any of the brain damage will be permanent. “Moms”  mental anguish of not being able to see her daughter is more than she can bear and I can’t even try to describe how she feels right now.  Family is splitting time between the two hospitals.

For those parents or grandparents out there I hope this story flashes through your mind when you see a child in the front seat for a “quick trip” because it’s so inconvenient to place the child in the back seat for such a short trip where nothing bad could possibly happen.

Lee- I am so sorry to read about your friend and her daughter. My prayers go out to both of them.

You are very right about the front seat for children. Most accidents happen close to home or on familiar paths due to the unintentional lack of attention because they are familiar and or close. Comfortable with your surroundings is not always a good thing.

Good morning. It's 66° and cloudy and I see fog out there. The high will be 82° and mostly cloudy becoming partly cloudy later with a 20% chance of rain.

Nothing planned for today except recover from yesterday. I'm sore and stiff as a board. I my do a bit of layout maintenance later. It's been a while since any serious running of trains has been done so a quick wipe down of the track with some Krud-Kutter should be in order.

Today's photo is of my 70's era Bachmann 0-6-0 as I received it in an inheritance some years ago. It's white metal for the most part with some brass details. It runs smooth providing the track is squeaky clean and it pulls like a demon. The tender is a standard plastic Bachmann tender.

Good morning, Gang.  I slept until 6:00, so lots of coffee, please, Chloe.  I usually can't sleep until 5:00.  The time change has really worked me over this year.

I should probably go back and read the posts when my eyes are completely open.Laugh

Yesterday I returned home from town to find the power off, again.  The wind, rain, hail, sleet, etc. was awful. Today, I will get back to the taxes after the sun Sigh comes up.

Morning All,

Not much planned for today. Have to go grocery shopping and stop at another place to pick up supplements for our wildlife at (in) the house. Later I  will probably run some locos on the inner loop to verify that I fixed the power problem.

MOH and I start vacation on the 24th for a week (cruise) to the Caribbean. We usually go 2 times a year. Our son will be home to take care of the critters.

Lee- I am sorry about what happened to your friends. I am praying for both of them.

Good Morning Modelers!

It's another wonderful day in the Mile High City.  Currently 49F but once again heading up into the 70's with a weekend that looks to be nice as well.

As for the NCAA Basketball tournament, I am12-4 in the first half of Round 2 and this is part of a Owner/Company event as a fun employee activity the owners setup and they are also participating/winning in.  Laugh  We are a small upcoming company and the owners sponsor these team building events off on on throughout the year.  They even setup some of these as fun competitions with other companies (Partners / Customers) as a way to bound us together like family.

Lee, I will keep your friends in my prayers.  When I was in High School, NYS had just made a law making seat belt use mandatory.  We always used the seat belts when we would drive to Rochester or Syracuse....  But just to drive the 3 miles into Canandaigua?  Why bother, just a few miles.........  My senior year I was late to school due to an emergency on the farm.  My dad let me drive the family (mother's) car to school.  We had been to Rochester for my voice lesson the night before.  I got in the car and sat on the belt buckle.  Said a bunch of nasty words, but decided it was just as easy to buckle up the belt as it was to tuck it under the seat and drove to school.  At the intersection right in front of the school there was a 2 way stop.  I had the right of way but the 84 year old man driving a Bonneville with a monster V8 in it didn't stop for the stop sign on the other side.  Instead of the brake, he hit the gas!  He was doing about 50mph when he broadsided my little Rambler station wagon.  Because I put on the seat belt, I was able to keep some control of the car and managed to put between a telephone pole and a large maple tree.  Except for some very large bone bruises at my waist line and a small cut on my right knee, I was fine.  The 84 year old man went to the hospital.  After that, the seat belt/harness has been worn even when I move my vehicles from one driveway to the other.  I am sure I wouldn't have survived if I had not put on the seat belt.  It's like the Book of Rules for RRs.  Every rule is there because someone died at some time......

Be safe out there and have a great day!

When i was a kid/teen my brother and I used to race mini cars for kids/teens. WE had a full racing harness/"seatbelt" that covered both shoulders, a chest cross strap and lap belt held in by both sides...I guess you might call it a 6-point secured harness. A few accidents and a flip or two by anybody {including us} racing were enough to show that a belted in driver can be far safer than an unbelted one, so when we got to learning to drive the "family car" There was NO QUESTION sealt belts would be worn, long before the law in NYS went into effect! Of course I think racing at young ages {ages 8-17} also helped us to drive better as young adults...

Safety first!  Wink

Lee: I hope there's more good news on the woman and her daughter. Anytime a child rides in my van he or she is strapped into the only back seat, a swiveling captains seat right behind the drivers seat. When I wad an active fire fighter I had to help more than several get kids out of cars. The best place for them is the back seat, strapped in. The worst highway accident I had to help out on was one in a Jeep Cherokee that had seven people in it, foru of the children rolled over at sixty mph. Only the driver and one of the kids was wearing seat belts. Most of the others were thrown out. Two of the kids and one of the adults were DOA. Now the most horrific deadly accident I worked involved a avn being hit by a train. That can be discussed at a later train as I don't much like remembering it.

 Afternoon Fellow Dinners.

 Flo, Beer please!

Felt pretty crumby most of the day. Did catch some shows on the Discovery Channels about train wrecks. While they where not my cup of tea, they did have trains in them so I watched them. Went out and paid some bills. Sigh That all-wise depresses me. Went to the library and picked up some movies to watch.

Now what's wrong with this picture? To get to the library I drove past my LHS? Confused Then on the way home I drove past it again? Anything I want I cannot afford and there nothing I could afford that I don't all ready have! I remember the good old days (about 6 years ago) every week I would go in and buy 2 or 3 Blue Box rolling stock. Man I miss those days, gave me something to look forward to.

Oh well, time to fight the Japaneses in the Pacific!

Evening All,

Flo could I have a cup of Decaf please. We had Nathan's tube steak for supper.

Today was a pretty lazy day. I checked the inner loop with my most sensitive loco (BLI I1sa) and no issues. Previously it would stop on it's own when the turnout was thrown to the meat packing siding, but now it doesn't and  runs the siding without issue. I also did a black wash on the outside of my coal hoppers to "dirty" them up.

Tomorrow I have to get parrot food then go to the train club. This will be the last time for a month based on vacation and w**k. Speaking of w**k I just submitted my schedule request for May-Sept. I won't know what I was assigned until after we return from the cruise.

In my train room there is a closet next to the layout that I removed the door (too close to layout) and I keep supplies in it. MOH is going to sew a curtain (Tuscan Red) and embroider a large PRR logo onto it. I'll take a photo when it's up but will be in April sometime.

This is before washing black on the cars

Everyone take care and prayers for those in need.

Slow day for me today. This morning I went down to my parents place and used the tractor and small trailer to move some bags of garden soil over to my fathers shop then helped him clean and paint the recently welded part of the hull of the Mynah Bird, my mothers old 1962 ski boat which my father is rebuilding in his spare time. It's an aluminum sixteen foot V bottom Lone Star ski boat. The seats and wood seat platforms had dry rotted badly when it was in storage for some years and when he brought it out to start working on it hurricane Rita dropped several very large green pine branches on it breaking part of the bow and completely wiping out what remained of the control panel and electrical system. He has had the control panel rebuilt and the electrical system replaced with a modern system and an electronic Evinrude 90 hp V4 outboard motor. The old 60's era 75 hp Evinrude V4 motor was completely locked up and couldn't be salvaged. The steering system has also been replaced with modern components. He has new lounge seats with bases for it but hasn't had time to put them in. They look just like the old ones did when they were new. As far as structural damage there's still the place on the bow where one of the big branches split the riveted seam between the bow deck and the hull. He's already had it in the water and running. It didn't take long to find there was a leak in the bottom where the two halves of the hull come together in a riveted seam. He had the rivets removed and the seam has been plated and welded. Maybe he'll get it all back together someday. right now it's his work project.
