Good Evening,

A very hot day here, at least for us. It is now in the low 90's and is supposed to stay there for a few days. Robbie is flaked out on the tile floor in the kitchen, but then a lot of our house has tile floor so he can stay cool in several spots.

Reading the posts for the past while I sure hope your government gets things sorted out. I read our financial press here everyday and am following events quite closely. What happens in the U.S. has a big impact on us as you are by far our largest trading partner. We went through a similar thing here 15 years ago on the debt front but luckily the government of the day did sort it out. Funny in that it was a Liberal, not Conservative government that did it.

Big news on my model RR. front this week. I took delivery of my CN U2g Northern. There has been a lot of criticsm of True Line Trains concerning this loco but I have to say the detail certainly rivals any brass I've seen and the price is now, sort of reasonable especially considering what you get. It is by far the nicest loco I own and it is great to have a model of an actual CN loco. The sound files loaded into the QSI decoder were even taken from the real thing, so the sound of the whistle is right on.

Ken, I hope things turn around for you and sales pick up. I need a new mattress but you are a little far away not to mention the border issue.

Galaxy, sorry to here your house hunt is off and I sure hope that tooth settles down.

My wife is busy making the dessert for our BBQ tomorrow and I have been told I need to make a store run as we are out of sugar.

I'll try to stop in more often but I seem to be quite busy of late.

Well, just to prove that everyone out here in California isn't some kind of Weird Whack-Job, I'm going to try and post a little video I made out in the garage this afternoon.  My first video, and I hope it turns out--it was a Devil to download on Photobucket.

Anyway, here goes--I hope.

]

Weird---you have to click the photo itself and then it takes you to my Photobucket account and plays it there.  Oh well---Embarrassed

Afternoon.

platter of sliders if you would be so kind.

California- Well, to quote Jerry Reed, 'You gave me one more reason to hate California.'  Come on, they have to pass laws for alternate couples gifts to society to be taught in Kindergarten?

Deficit- Thank heavens no one in my family's living on Pennsylvania Ave. For one thing, we could cut all this foreign aid to these 3rd world countries that are more corrupt than Illinois. Another thing, why are we sending aid to these countries in the middle east that aren't doing a thing to help us fighting a war on their sand?

They stars on the sidewalk for stars on the sidewalks to walk on. They got people who dance on their backs by their selves on the ground. They got tofu and gurus and hairdos from platinum to purple, and I don't like a place where the mountains keep moving

I'll be in the corner booth

If you can read this... thank a teacher. If you are reading this in english... thank a veteran

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer

If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer

If it's broken, get a hammer

If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!

Slide over a bit there please Todd. Yeah I'll have what he's having too maybe when Ken comes in he can join us and for THAT matter, Tom too (it is after all virtual beer). Spent the day machining parts only to find out the base line was achieved without the inner radius on the bearing modified so all other measurements were off as the bearing didn't fully seat on the axel flange. No I am not the one who did it but I gets to pay. Need to noodle this out first before I lose it and throw a wobbly. Best to walk away for a minute so we don't have to hear thesound of parts bouncing off the shop walls.

Sorry to hear about your trials Todd. Hard to cover all the variables when the health team isn't pulling together, and I hope your wife makes out ok with her mom as well. Guess if the Lords willin and the crick don't rise doesn't apply to laundry pumps.

Jeff - hope you feel better after some rest. Between the dramatic road trip and the latest bad news about your relative the best bet might be  bit of rest.

Back to try shimming the axel out or the outer bearing  and see if that will do - more later no pictures at 11.00 J.R.

Greeeeeeeaaat. Went downstairs to the laundry room to find the pump that send the water to the sewer didn't kick off and there is a pool of rinse water all over the floor. Luckily, not enough to escape the laundry/mechanical room into either the trainroom or the carpeted family room.

I need a beer.

(comes in with hand outstretched) Fellas, please welcome me to the club of it ain't such a great day. First, Jeff, I'm sorry to hear about your cousin. Fortunately, that kind of news I do not have to deal with.

Daughter is at the hospital due to drug (prescription) overdose we believe. Doctor prescribed and  told her the Pharmacy will say start with half dose then after a week go to full dose. Doctor said ignore that and start with full dose. Doctor spoke in terms of pills, two pills being one full dose. Gets medicine from Pharmacy, they say what Doc said they would using the term "dose", so she follows Docs orders. Problem is, the Pharmacy did not have the dosage Doc spoke of so they gave her double dose pills. Instead of two pills take one. No problem right? Problem was, when they told her to take half dose, they didn't tell her WHY to take half dose or that full dose is now one pill instead of two. I know, I know, always read the bottle and the dosage. I learned that from dealing with Mom. Problem two, Brenda has packed up the Grandkids and took them to their other Grandmother so she can go in town to take her Mother to the hospital for a reason she didn't quite say. She is pretty upset though and all I got was "why didn't she go yesterday when she should have"  Aside from some personal details you would not be interested in I learned yesterday and assume it relates to that, that's all the info I got.

Well now. I'm pacing around mentally, giving my opinions on the gevernmental issues being discussed to the dog, who doesn't seem to care at all. I will however, spare you the spewing forth of my opinions. I've given enough of those in the last couple daysStick out tongue. Suffice it to say, J. R. and others, sounds like we are on the same boat here. Garry, I agree with you too. There must be some changes in who is and who is not entitled to benefits. Problem is, that would probably require more spending in the form of man... er um, person power. But for now we are stuck where we are stuck. I don't know enough about it to give more than an uneducated opinion. Luckily our Congressmen have seen to it they recieve enough funds so they can afford to feed the family, pay the restaurant bills, keep the lights and the satellite on and meet the mortgage(s) if they have one with some left over to keep the kids occupied and the wife happy so they don't have to worry about those pesky things and they can carry on the discussions required to work this out. (sarcasm. It shall be the last...... For now.)

One thing is for sure, I love 'em, but I don't think I really want to know what all is in a hot dog.Laugh

Coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

Kitties were playing with my wife's (HO) flat bed truck last night. One of them must have knocked it off the counter. Thankfully no damage and it is now in the Train Room where it belongs. The bed will be painted black to match our local Milling feed store truck which sometimes delivers our hay.

Have a good day all.

Good afternoon. It's 82° and according to the forecast I'm looking at it's raining somewhere in the area, not here. The high will be 97° with a 50% chance of rain. I haven't seen any yet.

I've been down here at my parents place getting the laundry done. We received some bad news this morning. A cousin of mine who had been living in Roswell, New Mexico passed away this morning due to liver and kidney problems. Jimmy was 48 years old and is survived by his mother and two brothers. He was the youngest.

I have no plans for today as I'm not feeling well. When I'm on my feet I feel like I'm on the edge of dizziness. In fact I've already lost my balance several times today, so I have to be extremely careful in anything I do. Shortly I'll be leaving here for the short drive back home. I'm thinking about crawling back into bed for a few hours.

Tom ... I heard about that CA law in the news. Public schools have forgotton their job is to prepare the children so they may grow up and support themselves while properly managing their own money. Regarding SS and other entitlements, we must face the facts. Uncle Sam has depleted too much of the funding for those programs, and they must be cut even though that is unfair. Who says life is fair? The programs are more than doubling in size every ten years based on spending levels. The numbers say the economy can not grow fast enough to pay for these programs if existing laws are not changed. Cuts to other spending should be made of course, but there is not enough savings in other areas to change the problems with entitlement programs.

I'm still trying to not be political. This is my two cents based upon my own experience economics and finance. I've looked at enough of Uncle Sam's numbers to realize cuts to all spending including entitlements must be made. That does not mean I want it that way. It meanst I know we all should be honest about how things really are. Denial of problems does not solve them.

My advice to young people is to save their money and invest it wisely. The years go by too quickly, and they will need all they can save for retirement.

Perhaps, the next generation would like to afford to buy HO Yellowstones when they retire.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooood Morning.

Hmmmmmmmm. I thought the point of teaching about historical figures was because of WHAT he or she did (accomplished)...not WHO they did....Whistling

As for the threat of not getting SS checks, well (full of toads) the senior senator from Iowa spelled-out quite clearly at least two ways the checks could still go out. In other words, if 3 August comes and no SS checks...one man is the reason why. Which man? Well...let me be clear...he'll probably be on the golf course or on vacation at the time... Just say'in, leaving the soap box in the corner, passing up all the rest of the poly-ticks.

As for so-called Social Security, at 42 I've known for many years THAT I'll never see a dime of it. It was a Ponzi scheme from the start. They sell it like you have a little drawer in Wash. DC with your name on it, and your SS contributions in it. NOPE!

Except I gotta say, CUDA KEN: Hey Pal, while I'm sorry to hear of your situation...I wish we had $800 in "savings." Here's a little un-solicited advice. You said you have to pay the cable bill...no, you don't. Cut the cable, cut back on the toys, maybe sell-off some things...you'll be fine. Trust me. I've been out of work three times in the past decade. As for your competitor spreading BS about your store...I'd go pay him a little visit. Surely there is an alleyway or something behind his store...maybe a little re-education session to put his mind right... Or, a non-violent approach, find some funky-nasty obviously used mattresses and stack 'em up outside the front door of his shop with "sale!" tags on them.

Don't get mad...get even.

Off to Beef Days in Solon I go...it rained this morning, the sun is out, the heat-wave is coming...I'm sure it'll be blisteringly hot and stifling humid for my afternoon events: Paper Airplane Toss, Big Wheel Races and Future (kids) Firefighters Waterball Contest. Good thing I mowed most of the yard last night. I also have two varsity baseball game write-ups to do from last night's Sub-State tournament action.

Maybe I'll be in a better mood later...kinda pissy this morning, if you hadn't noticed. Right now, I'm growly enough THAT I don't think even DEATHTONGUE's "Let's Roll Over Lionel Ritchie With a Tank" would put a smile on my face.

Gotta go, some system cheater is depending on my paycheck today...

California did just pass a law where textbooks and taught in the classroom the contribution of Gays, Lesbiand, and Transgenders starting in kindegarden.

Dennis:

Oh yah, almost forgot about THAT one!  At least I teach in a private Catholic high school, so I don't see that making much headway on the campus there.

Okay, I'm off my SoapBox.  Time to go out and run trains.

Oh, and speaking of trains, watched a really funny movie last night called A TICKET TO TOMAHAWK.  All about a train traveling through 1870's Colorado on no track (!).   It occasionally shows up on FMC, so if you guys get a chance to watch it, don't pass it up.  It's got the zingiest little narrow-gauge 10-wheeler I've ever seen as the 'star' of the film.  Good movie.  Funny, colorful and exciting.

Morning almost Afternoon All,

Nothing going on here. Ran my M1b a little this AM. Still having same issues. Checked wires and they are OK. I was thinking of putting up the backdrop Sunday but I am going to wait on that until I can get the power issue fixed. Everything still runs fine on the base station. Today when I used the hand held when the loco stops the speed number remains and it starts back up on it's own after 3-4 seconds.Grumpy. I wish I had a better knowledge of electricity and electronics.

One thing I am going to do is clean track tomorrow. It has been on the layout several months and through a wall removal and installation in the loft. Hopefully this will help, at least it won't hurt anything.

Here in FL we just started putting 3% of our pay into our state retirement accounts. Although I am not happy about it I can understand why the need is there. Listening to some of my fellows you would think it was the end of the world (that's Dec 21, 2012Whistling), so I keep my mouth shut and pay up.

What really irritates me is the feds talking about SS like they are giving you something for free by their generosity. There is no generosity involved, I have paid into it for almost 40 years, and I am entitled to my fair share of it.

If the feds want to save money then, 1.Do away with foreign aid, 2. The people earning welfare can do jobs for the local government like cleaning up garbage or light construction under supervision, kind of like what happened under FDR and, 3. Don't reward people for continuing to have children when they need us to pay for the children they have now. The idea that welfare is multi generational is ridiculous. OK I will get off the SoapBox before Vinnie boots me out.

For those of you with severe money problems I am very sorry. I know you guys have worked your entire life and it is not fair to be in this situation at this point in our lives.

Everyone please take care.

Mornin' all:  just coffee and cinnamon toast for me today--went out to dinner last night and did my Once A Month Crazy with a big steak and baked potato, so I've got to be a Good Boy this weekend.   Back to turkey and veggies.  And fruit.  LOTS of fruit!

My next door neighbor Jon hobbled over yesterday with a Thank You gift for phoning 911 when he took his dive off the roof.  He was hefting a 12-pack of Gordon Biersch Pilsner and had a big smile on his face.  Said, "I know you LOVE this stuff, so thanks."   The smile kind of faded when I told him that I really appreciated the gift, but I couldn't drink alcohol anymore.  He blinked and said, "Oh ***, I forgot--uh, maybe I can take this back and exchange it for a case of cranberry juice."  "How about Mott's apple juice instead?"  We laughed a while.  He's a GREAT neighbor, he and his family have lived next door for about 25 years (we don't play House Chess much in this neighborhood, everyone who lives here has been here quite some time).  Couldn't ask for better neighbors.

So I guess I'm going to be awash in Motts apple juice today, LOL!  Hey, the stuff's GOOD!

Garry:  Agree with you.  I've been paying into SS since I was 16, and I get a little miffed to find out that there might be a hold on one of my SS checks.  Okay, I've got my retirement and savings, plus my part-time job during the fall and winter at Jesuit, but why should I be forced to dip into that because my 'investment' has been squandered by the Government to support people who don't know any better than to talk on cell phones and pop out Welfare babies every 9 months?  Aargh!!

Ken/Galaxy:  I really sympathize with you guys.  I sure hope things start turning around for both of you, that is NOT a comfortable position to be in, either right now or ANYTIME!

Well, as if our State Legislature wasn't whacked out enough to begin with, here's the latest:  They just spent about a million dollars trying to decide what constitutes a proper HOT DOG!   Say WHAT?!

And if San Francisco hasn't already slipped into the Pacific Ocean mental-wise, they're trying to pass an ordinance banning Circumcision.  Now what the Hell is THAT one all about?  That's beyond Politics, it's heading into the stratosphere of just plain NUTS!   And the whole thing is being spear-headed by a retired Child Psychologist--female, yet!   According to her, 'clipping' leads to Mental Disorders.  Okay, enough of that--I'm veering into a conversational No-No, but I can't stop laughing, for crying out loud!  Where DO these people come from, and why do they all seem to end up in California? Tongue Tied

Did some work on the MR yesterday--natch--disconnected an old BLI sound controller, since I've gotten rid of most of my dual-mode lokies, and by golly, the layout runs smoother with it gone.  Found out the problem with my dead House track--loose connecting wire.  Vacuumed one of my turnouts to get a teeny piece of ballast out of the points--kept derailing everything--and cured a Tomar locomotive pickup that kept hanging up on every guard rail I own.  Just fun stuff.  Forgot that in this hobby that anything that can go wrong WILL go wrong, LOL!

Found out that my Nikon takes videos along with photos--only took me two years to find THAT out--so I'm gonna don my Director's Cap today and see how it works.  Should be fun.

Have a great day, everyone.  Prayers to those in need.

Good morning!

It's one of those days when I appreciate life very much. Makes me smile! Smile, Wink & Grin

JR ... That's well stated. People pay into a program all their lives, and we should keep them in mind. Also, there are those who saved and invested wisely for retirement, and they should not be taxed to pay for those who failed to do so. I think the money taken from us for entitlement programs would have a greater return if there were no programs, and we saved and invested our money wisely to fund our own retirement and our own health insurance. Government always screws things up . ... Vinnie! No, I was not being political.

I hope to have some time for my layout today. CHeers!

Good Morning!! COFFEE!!!! Dark roast, French roast, Chicory, Hickory, shoot.., mix ’em all and boil it. I don’t care just give some of the strong stuff!!!

Came home last night to two grandkids spending the night. Don’t know when they’re leaving but I’m ready now. There is a reason why people, as a rule, have children when they are younger. Whew! In the morning these little tiny mites are wired for sound. Gee WHIZ!

Hm….I need to start popping in during the evening. Musical entertainment is becoming quite frequent around here.

Plenty of things to do today without the kids wanting me to “play” with them. Which usually involve a couple minutes of play, then “wait. Let’s do this….” or “ wait, watch this Grandpa” and then they.... jump or something. Ah youth. That and age don’t mix well. Worst part is tomorrow, Brenda will want to know why I haven’t gotten those things done at Mom’s house I was going to do today. Forgetting immediately that last night she also volunteered me to play with the Grandkids today.

J.R.- Yes it is too bad when resources dry up. And I did not mean to make it sound like I was unsympathetic to the website or the people who used it. No at all. But what was going on was it seemed they were blaming Cat and the lawyer for beating up on a website that was only providing the service for free on something of no real pofitabl use to Cat. And in part, I agree. But next thing you know, folks are going to be selling things with the EMD logo on it. I have not been to this website, but if it has advertising to keep it free, such as this one, and someone comes to that site to see the manual and the advertising is there in hopes someone notices and visits their sites hoping for a sale, then that’s where a big problem arises. Someone else may claim that Cat is knowingly allowing, without permission, people to use their trademarks and copyrights for…..profit. Not direct profit, it doesn’t have to be. They will claim that advertisers would not advertise on the site if they did not have something worth bringing viewers in for. “EMD manuals? Sure in that case we will” and then a fee is paid. Keyword paid. The website is using Cats trademarks and copyrighted stuff to make a profit. Past practice comes into play and next thing you know EMD hats are being sold, coffee cups, fake manuals with EMD logos all over them are printed, tattoos on strippers tushes in the strip joint around the corner from the courthouse (which according to the Judge serves a Reuben sandwich that is just out of this world), little doggy scarves…..the list goes on. Sad when things like that happen, it really is. But this is the same country where the little old lady can sue McDonald’s because her coffee was hot. I often wonder if her coffee was just warm, would she have driven around to the front to complain because it was cold. I thinks so if you ask me.

Stan- Your Layout pictures show that it looks to be as impressive as your paintings.

Galaxy- Sorry about the house funds drying up. Something may break loose again sometime, but of course “the house” will show up between now and then. I suggest you just not look, even out of curiosity.

Ray- Yep that bites. Though I understand prices of somethings..,, Oh who am I kidding, everything, has risen so high that the old insurance plans just can’t cut it. It still seems wrong that they cut deals with you to sacrifice your salary and hence savings, for an insurance program that when the time comes, you don’t get. Kinda makes me wonder if I went to the bank and said (listen up Ken it just might work ) “you know, when I bought this house I could afford it but things in the world changed. Now I know costs have not risen in the past three or four yearsConfused, but well, despite that, I can’t live up to my end of the bargain anymore. So, here’s what I’ll do. Either you take this new monthly payment I’ll pay you or, I’ll just keep the house and you get nothing.” What are you gonna do though we're stuck with what they do. Say, tell the waterer the roots to that tree are most likely as far out as the tree in the neighbors yard to the left in the picture and see if he doesn’t start watering clear over to there (chuckle). You might tell him that watering the street would be a waste of time though. By the way, which door did you say you fixed?Smile, Wink & Grin

TRAIN TALK!!!!- (ahem) I’m with you guys. I’m DC now, but will, I’m sure, end up DCC sometime in the not too distant future ( not like this month or anything). Mainly because I want multiple trains on the tracks, not necessarily running at the same time, but at least sitting there)  and the ease that DCC gives when doing that. But after listening to you guys, I think I’ll stick to DCC for the choo choo train operations only. Right now, I am using manual turnouts and will be converting a turnout or two at a time to powered ones. Do you use the self centering switches (toggle) and just hold until the turnout makes it’s switch. Or use the manual center off. Or, does it hurt to just flip a standard old DPDT switch and leave it shooting juice to the switch motor. I’d think option A or B would be the ones. But it sounds like option C is the one being used.

My gosh this is long. Well since I’ve talked so much already I might as well leave you with this bit of un verified rumor…

Did you hear about the lady who tried to sue Walmart several years ago because her bag or bags broke from the amount of groceries in them in the parking lot? Yup, Walmart’s fault, they loaded them. I don’t think the plaintiff succeeded, but they tried. Wouldn’t that have been something if they’d have won. (shakes head) Shoot before long we can ask someone for twenty bucks for gas and if they refuse, sue them because we ran out and couldn’t make it to work and got fired or lost wages for the day. Or the doctors and got sick so we have to pay their medicine bill.

Best get a move on, I keep hearing “Grandpa are you finished with your paperwork yet?” Paperwork. LaughThat was Brenda’s idea to get them to leave me alone long enough to visit here for a bit.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a short stck of Blueberry Pancakes with real Maple Syrup, breakfast sausage, and lots of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug, please.

J.R. - well said!  I seem to recall a "budget Surplus" back a decade or so ago............  I'll just be quiet!

I got a call last evening telling me my sisters lawn mower is repaired.  I will drive down to Penn Yan and pick it up this afternoon....  Will need to be on the road to the Museum by about 2:30 today.  This evening in "Trolleys by Twilight" from 4PM to 10PM.  They will have the old Calliope up at the NYMT playing and a local ice cream company selling all kinds of taste confections as well.  The Vice-president of the R&GV RR sent out an email last night saying they didn't have a train crew yet for tonight.....  I told him I love to w*rk train crew but this is the first thing I have heard....  Asked him if I was not on the list and if I had done something to get ignored....  He sent out an email to everyone saying they were evidently still having problems with the train crew emails......  (ongoing thing).  I will be doing Docent duty as THAT is what I signed up for.  He also got back to me with an explanation.

Best get a move on!  Have a great day!

Good Morning All,

Back in the shop with #1 son (who's doing govt w..k on his CFO's car) along with Rattie, Rupert and Allie while the wives go camping. I was doing some more research on what's involved with DCC turnouts and have come to the same conclusion as Curt and RAy - not worth the expense and not easy enough yet unless I preprogram the route into a computer .... never mind sounds like w..k and not fun. If someone comes out with a parrallal wireless remote with the turnouts running on a seperate screen, maybe.... but for now, I'll just have to endure with DPDT switches Crying. Now that we've discussed it I can see the advantage to the tried and true diagram and switch method over hunt and peck with the controller. If I eventually get ambitious and put signals on the turnouts it'll be even easier.

Ken - you handled that lying weasel a lot better than I would have. It doesn't take much to ruin a reputation even with a totally malicious rumor and the damage can be suprisingly long lasting.

Galaxy - you didn't need the bank piling on along with the tooth.

It would be nice if the collective gov't would step up and do the right thing just once. Using a crisis as a cudgel against those most in need is just wrong. I know we're in dire straits debt wise and many of the entitlement programs need reform, but I think the'hurrah for the well off and bollocks to the poor"stuff is just wrong. There is a lot to fix and we need to weed the unentitled out of the entitlement programs and eliminate fraud, but the programs I've paid into all my w..king life are in trouble because of the congress borrowing the money and not at least putting it into bonds that pay interest. Sorry Vinnie, yes it's verbotten here and I have transgressed, but I worry for the people that stand to be affected by the game playing (at no risk to themselves) by the people elected to look after the country. As for myself, I've resigned myself to the lot my grandparents had - labor til you drop dead at your post.

So, enough about me, how are y'all doing this fine day (and it is nice out).   Here's my coffee - I'll just ease out the side door here kinda slow.       CUL, J.R.

Good Morning,

Started replacing my GF’s garage roof yesterday morning, today I’m heading back at it. It has 7 layers of rolled roofing over 1x12x20 pine boards (built 1912).  I bought one of those roofing ripping off shovels and was able to remove most of the roofing in 3 hours, nails and all; the roof is almost 500 sqft. Today I’ll lay the ½” plywood and finish the roof. Roofers wanted $1200 to do the job; I’m doing it for $348.88.

Ulrich, good to hear you found a place for your parents, now I hope they like it and decide to move.

Tom, that’s cool you gave the fire department an op session.  Good thing they took care of your neighbor first.

Ray, was that your phantom of the opera pose?

Curt, if the throttle resets to zero when the locomotive reaches  one spot on the track look at the ground wires on the track, make sure noting is loose.

Chamomile tea, please.

***Ken, sorry to hear of your situation. I would offer to buy some of your extra amps and such to help you out, but I actually have a bit less in my account than you and have no idea when my next painting might sell. It has been beyond bad in this economy.

***Stan, another great work in progress there. Really like your layout pic. Well done!

Didn't accomplish much today. Whether from treatments or the sarc, I have been really run down lately. It is what it is.

Have a good night all.
