Good Morning Folks,

a bright and sunny day, but way too cold for the time of the year. Seems as if all the heat stays in the US this year!

Flo, coffee and a bowl of cereal, please.

Ray - that engine house of yours is a blast! Bow

Bill - brought some friends along? I hope Petra does not see ´em - she´ll think I am in the wrong forum!

Ken - the temple will be on the module next to this one - another challenging module. Iam glad things seem to be improving at work, now that Mel´s out of the way. How about suing him for damages Question

Garry - outstanding photos!

Some of you folks show such great model work - makes me fee what I am - a mediocre modeler, which is fine for me.

No major plans for the day, other than the usual grocery run and a trip to our "Home Depot" to buy the plywood pieces I need to build the module. I will prepare them for cutting and assembly on the weekend. Petra does not like to see me using saber saw - too much dust, dirt and mess in our little apartment. My friend´s man cave in his basement is the ideal place to do this type of messy work.

I talked to Petra about putting up the shelf for my layout and getting rid of that old (and damaged) bookcase - she thinks this is a good idea Thumbs Up That´ll leave me with a more or less permanent layout and a desk I can still use Thumbs UpThumbs Up

Have a good one!

Ken, I'm assuming that you're talking to me, Joe. As far as I can tell, none of the schools that I am looking at have a MRR club. However, I plan to bring something with me, even if it's just a few small projects so I am able to do some modeling to a degree. Also, I may even look into starting a club at whatever school I end up going to... Mischief

Morning, Bill!

Catch ya later,

-Joe

 Evening Fellow Dinners!

Flo, potato salad and make it cold, Chile Dog with extra onion and a Beer please.

Work Front, I am on fire! Big Smile Had three customer and closed 2 for $2000.00. Thumbs Up In the last three days I have had 8 customer and got 7 deals for 87.5%. Again it is only a moral victory, still very little chances of making commission. In the next 10 days I would have to $2400.00 a day to make any extra money.

Car Repair Front. Grumpy Checked the fuse in the Town Car today for the blower motor, it was good. Grumpy So it going to be either.

1 Blower Motor, was only $25.00 but I hate to guess what labor would run. Has to be a pain!

2 Blower Motor Relay. Hoping it is this, at only $11.00 and it is easy to reach. Yes

3 Climate Control. This sucker is $160.00, but I don't think it would be to hard to get too.

4 Wiring, just open my wallet and let Bob take what he wants! Whistling

Ulrich, I want to see! Smile For some reason when I tried to copy the link to the picture, it won't let me. Is this the section where the Temple of the Green Well will be? Could you post a real picture? JUst glad you have time for some Railroading again.

Stan Yep another great painting! Maybe one of theses day I can buy one from you.

Tom How much does one of your Yellow Stone weight? My PCM Y6-b is right at 3 pounds and the PCM Big Boy is 3 pounds 6 oz. Both pull like P O bulls. Y6 has pulled 70 coal cars up a 1.5% grade with no effort at K-10 Model Trains Christmas Party a few years back. Engine never slowed down going up the grade.

Curt Big SmileGlad your wife's MRI is great!

Rob Yet another modeling work of art started.

Young Man Looking for a Collage. Sorry I cannot remember you name. Check and see if the have a Model Railroad club at the collages.

        See you all later.

***Ken, here's the run down on the receiver:

Onkyo TX-SR876

First problem (from day 1) was the sound sometimes took many minutes to come on. Sent it in to Onkyo and it was returned with new problem: Picture started freezing, sometimes in as few as 10 minutes. I decided to bypass the picture entirely and just use the receiver for sound, using the Digital Coaxial. This worked fine for some minutes when a horrible sound came across the speakers and the receiver went quiet. Unplugged receiver for a couple days and reset it. Here is what I’ve found:

Receiver menu appears both on unit and to the TV.

When trying to use the set-up mic, the unit will not accept “Enter” and no sound is made.

This receiver used to “click” when shifting between choices (DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, GAME/TV). There is no longer any click noise to be heard when switching between these.

I have tried every setting option and not one of them produces ANY sound of any sort. I assume the video part of the unit is still screwed up as well. If your daughter's friend has any idea how much damage has likely been done and what it would require to fix it, that would be helpful. Also, any estimate on what I might be looking at ($$$) when/if the day comes I can afford to have it repaired?

Thanks for any info and help with this.

Evenin' folks!

Flo just a decaf for me at the moment.  I'll be in the back booth watching the evening trains go by and relaxing.

Roofer showed up at noon like he said he would.  Took a quick look at the shed, took a couple measurements, we talked about roofing for a few minutes, and I told him I wanted it done in whatever he could do cheapest in a metal roof.  He disappeared into his truck for about 5 minutes and came out with a quote for the job.  It was right on the money where I thought it would be.  He then said, "If you go with white color rather than the galvanized, I can do it with roofing I have left over from a job we did a few weeks ago, and I'll knock $50 of the price.  I told him THAT would work for me as long as the City doesn't have some stupid rule THAT roofs can't be white....  He laughed and said, "How's Saturday sound?"  He will be in, get the roof done, and should be gone by the time I get home from the NMRA Picnic THAT day.

Went to the Medical appt. later this afternoon.  I am down almost 10 lbs.  Blood sugar is right where it should be.  She wrote a prescription for the medication I have been taking, and then we talked about our Cats for a few minutes and found out my sister may have taught 2 of her children Art in school......  Small world!

Managed to almost finish the rafters on the Engine house.  Got out my 10mm-22mm lens and got a few more photos tonight.  The inside looks much longer (closer to what you see if you look down the length yourself.  If you can still take a couple more shots of it.....

I got a couple with the little teakettle 0-6-0T yard goat THAT will reside there as well.

Any of you have any photos of or measurements/plans for a 1920's Smoke Jack Vent used for steam locos???  THAT will be the last I will be fabricating for inside the  building.  Then I just have to build the roof and put the roofing (Galvanized Period metal roofing).

Have a good one!

Evening all.

Hope all is well with you guys.

Today my mom and I spent the day visiting the Rutgers regional campus in New Brunswick. I arrived indifferent, already somewhat decided that I didn't like it. Dunno why, maybe because it's so close? After the bus tour and seeing how everything was spread out across five different campuses, I really didn't like it. Then we did a walking tour around Busch Campus, where most of the engineering classes take place. After seeing that it was a mostly complete and normal college campus, I was content, and actually like the school now. Not my number one, but it's third behind Lehigh University and Lafayette College. One big plus for Rutgers is how (relatively) inexpensive it is for in-state students. Cost will be a major factor in where I will end up going.

I am off of w**k tomorrow as well. Imagine that! TWO days off IN A ROW? Impossible... Actually, I was supposed to be on for tomorrow night  and off on Sunday, but a co-worker asked if I would be able to cover her Sunday shift, so I ended up taking that and giving her mine for tommorrow.

In that case, I'm off to the beach in the morning, and should have time to stop in here in the evening. Even small things like that seem nearly impossible these days, w**king 5-6 days (30-40 hours) a week.

I'll be hanging around at the RC for a while while (<-----not a typo) I decide what I want to eat. I'm up for some convo, since I've been missing lately.

Veggie & Fruit smoothie. please.

***Bill, it's a good thing that hostess is virtual, or my marriage could be at risk.PirateLaugh

***Sawyer, you're right, white water rafting rules. I have an old 9-person Miwok. Made a custom frame for it and took many a friend (usually datesBig Smile) down just about ever river in the state of WA., and a few in OR. as well. Now it sits dry rotting away in the back shed and will never see a river again.

***Garry, another EXCELLENT layout pic there. Put it on the desktop for my wife to see.

Got the last two pieces of tin on the back side of the tractor shed today. Then sealed all the holes. Many left to put on the front, but those can wait. Also sprayed the orchard and grape vines as part of the ongoing war on Chinese Beetles. Plum worn out again.

Hello all. Got a problem and I cannot figure out how to fix it. Several weeks ago I updated the home computer when one of those alerts said to update. 2009 windows ??? Anyway since then I can not post on the forum from the home computer. I can open , read even type. But when I hit the post button - nothing - Confused

ALERT! I'm going out on a limb here. Was that an upgrade to Internet Explore 9? If so you need to look for an icon to the right of the address bar. It looks like a torn piece of paper. The problem is that the forum isn't compatible with IE9. Clicking the aforementioned icon puts IE9 into IE8 emulation mode and all will work as it should.

Uh-Oh... YOU GOTTA WANTA: If you've got anti-virus, anti-spy, anti-anything software; I'd be running it. I'm thinking you might've gotten "got."

Gooooooooooooooooooooooood afternoon, bucket of ice water please and thank-you...

In-laws from Lou-eeeeeeeeeeze-anna showed up yesterday at the FIL's for his 75th birthday. Finally met the BIL and his brood THAT stayed put post-Katrina. Nice people. The wife and I are going to be attending a BBQ with 'em this evening. I think they brought the weather with 'em: heat index of 110. Makes me glad I'm NOT the "Amana Medic" anymore. Days like this, 2nd shift was full of people dropping over in the factory from heat exhaustion. One shift, I had 20+ heat cases in my little First Aid Office. The place kinda looked like something out of M*A*S*H.

I see "social media" has returned as a topic... should I post my theory THAT "social media is what you get when you put your 'bits' someplace you shouldn't?" In other words: "I'm sorry Sir, but you seem to have 'social media' about your bits...here's some penicillin, should clear it right up!"

ULRICH: THAT'S gonna be a neat little scene!!!YesYes

Well (full of cooked frogs and toads...) I'd best see if the in-laws have finally transmitted the coordinates of where we are to gather tonight or not.

Have a safe day everybody,

Chris

YGW said: "Ulrich- the grade looks a bit steep below the track. Maybe you should add some shoring to keep the track from sliding down the hill??"

YGW - The drawing does not show it too well, but at the tunnel portal, the track will be on a bridge and the track leaving the short tunnel is on a stone embankment. I hope to be able to do the rough work by coming weekend, so I can post a picture.

On the home front , dusted off the layout, cleaned track and when the kid showed up with our grandson (who LOVES train) we ran trains for him. Boy did he get a big grinn on his face and said something I could not understand in two year old lahgauge. But his face said all I needed to understand.

Yard wars- The old cub cadet took on a rock and bent the blade. Went to buy a blade at Tractor supply. They wanted $65 dollars for two blades ! Will have to try to find it cheaper somewhere else. For now Yard one point , Mower  o points.

Some more good news for MOH. She had another MRI this past week at NIH. Sawbones said she looked good, cancer is still in check. Sawbones bills not so good. Had $3k we owe, anothe 5k in doc bills came in friday Bang Head

Paul - you need hay ?! Come to Va. We have so much of the stuff it is literally rotting in the fields ! I think a round bale is going for $45 to $65 depending on the qaulity of the hay.

Garry - Nice Bow

Ulrich- the grade looks a bit steep below the track. Maybe you should add some shoring to keep the track from sliding down the hill??

Tom- thats pretty neat , kids are so resourceful - neat they really enjoyed the trains. Did you have to get eyes to get them back in the eyeball socket from the "KNOCKOUT girlfriend "?

Oh geez. Gotta get back to w**k. Meeting to prepare for.

Talk to you all later. Hope someone can clue me in on the computer issue.

Thanks

Well, after my Great Re-Wiring Episode yesterday, the railyard at Deer Creek is still operable.  I think I realize the problem now, after getting a PM from Der:  Those Yellowstones are HEAVY!   And my track is laid on WS foam roadbed, which is kind of spongy (KIND of?  Anything heavier than one of my 2-8-2's makes it looks like a Roller-Coaster, LOL! Stick out tongue)

That would look pretty funny with my team of SDP40F's. The two of them together (that's the only way they're run) weigh in at an impressive three and a half pounds. Pretty hefty for plastic. That could be a crushing experience for any loose or bad track work, so I make sure I have none. While it's a bit rough it's all locked securely in place in wall joint compound and strangely enough is very quiet.

Ray- I thought you had said earlier the roof would be removable, but the latest photo gave me wonder if you had changed your mnd. Will the entire rafter section come off with the sheeting? Or will you tab the sheeting to set on the rafters? Considering the way the rafters are turning out, I would be leaning towards the latter. It would be a shame to hide yet another outstanding detail. I hesitate to say I'm impressed beause that would lead you to believe I wasn't sure you were capable of such fine work. Nothing could be farther from the truth, so lets just say..Bow very well done! Oh and I laughed at that photo and caption too...priceless. Especially considering those two were my favorite characters on the old Muppet Show. They were hilarious and that is EXACTLY something the old codger would have said. Laugh

Mornin' Bill....  Mornin' everyone!

"I'm Singin' in the Rain, Just Singin' in the Rain....." Yes!  It is precipitating outside, or was should I say.  We have a good chance of some severe thunderstorms here in the Finger lakes today.

Zoe, I have the Eggs Benedict this morning.  Lots of dark roast coffee in my R7GV RR mug would hit the spot as well.

Ulrich, THAT looks like a great module!  I know you will do a great job on it.  Have fun.

Todd, can I borrow your cell phone?  I need to text my family to let them know I need to use the men's room again.....  LOL!!!

Rob and Todd, yes part of the main roof will be removable to show the inside w*rk.  The roof over the side workshop is also removable for viewing.  I do hope it works............

I best get moving.  The roofer should be showing up around noon to give me an estimate on the shed roof, and I have an appt. with the Nurse Practitioner later this afternoon.  Should be just to check on the blood work and write some prescriptions for me.

Have a great day out there!

Good morning from Sunny(again)Cal.  We're still enjoying less than normal temperatures--it was 81 yesterday, and supposed to be 85 today.  Everyone's happy except the tomato farmers--they need some really HOT days for their crops.

Stick out tongue),  And the rail is Code 83, so it seems logical that eventually the rail connectors will work loose.  Actually, the Yellowstones are the main reason that my mainline track is Code 100.  Okay, it's not 'to scale'--whatever that is--but it's sturdy and bulletproof.  But it's Wired to the Max, so to speak, now, and I hope I'll have fewer problems with it.

My Brilliant Student Chad (the one I play online Bejeweled with) and I were chatting on Facebook yesterday, and I just happened to mention the layout.  We've never discussed hobbies, oddly enough, and so I told him if he ever got  bored to delve into my Photobucket website.  Well, he did, and he started going Postal about how good it was and how impressed he was.  I didn't even know he LIKED trains.  So I jokingly told him that anytime he was in the area to drop by and I'd run a train for him.

He showed up twenty minutes later, girl-friend in tow, big grin on his face and said, "Okay Doc.  Run me a train."   I stood at the front door in absolute surprise and asked, "How did you know where I live?"

"GPS, Doc," he grinned.  I ran them a train.  In fact, several.   Kid's a ton of fun.  And his girl-friend is a KNOCKOUT!

Ulrich:  I like the looks of that module plan.  As to the tunnel, no sweat.  We've got scads of short tunnels out here in the Wild West--it's easier to bore through the rock than it is to blow it up and make a cut out of it, LOL!   Can't wait to see the finished product.

Garry: Der's still around--I got a neat PM from him yesterday, so I'm sure he'll show up at the Diner pretty soon.  As to the "Aeolus" being a Pacific, though I love Lucius Beebe to death, he never was terribly accurate on wheel-arrangements, sometimes.  I've got a lovely photo of his showing a Rio Grande double-header on the Moffat Tunnel District, and he refers to one of the locomotives as a 4-6-4.  Rio Grande never ran a Hudson in its' life, LOL!  It's one of their chunky, handsome little 1914 Pacific's.

Stan:  Another GREAT painting, my friend.  Bow  I should ask--what medium do you use?  Oil?  Watercolor?  Acrylic?  I really admire your work.  If you ever decide to do a Missabe M-4 Yellowstone, let me know, I'll be standing at your front door, checkbook in hand.  I mean it!

Well, time to finish breakfast and toddle out into the garage.  Had a breeze yesterday, and--POLLEN!  Have to run my track-cleaning train, the Atlas one with the little built-in vacuum.  Hey, it really WORKS!  I've got two of them, one with a polishing brush the other with the vac-attachment.  I push them around the track with my little 2-8-0.  Noisier than all get-out, but the track sparkles after.  Needless to say, they get a workout on an uninsulated garage layout around here.

Have a great day, guys.  Prayers to those in need.

Tabasco peach mango punch please. Ahh, that's great.

Good morning. It's 77° and mostly cloudy. The high will be 92°. A 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning then a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

We got some rain yesterday and it was finally more than a quick shower that leaves no evidence of it having occurred. It lasted at least a couple of hours and the lightning was intense enough to trip the surge protectors at the local Cinema 6 theater (only one in town) and take all six projectors offline for about twenty minutes. I know, I was there. I used the downtime to make a trip to the mens room. It was on the way there and back that I discovered that the projectors in all six cinemas had shut down. The effect when viewed through the 3D glasses was nothing short of amazing. The screen lit up white for about half a second then appeared to fly out over the audience and vanish. Now, as for plans for today. I have none. If I feel that I have the energy to work on the layout I will. Right now I have none. I'm slightly dizzy, somewhat unfocused and my arms feel heavy not to mention that my ankle hurts but what else is new.

Garry - thanks for the stamp of approval Smile, Wink & Grin It´ll be a challenge to build this one!

Todd - sorry, no waterfall. It´s supposed to look like this:

The tunnel has a length of only 10 ft. - that´s a little over 3/4".

I hope I can master it...

Morning All,

At w**k today. Already hot and steamy. Tomorrow I don't go in until 1600 so I think I am going to do my first ground cover on the very back of the layout. I have a 1.5 inch strip before the backdrop and I want to do it before the backdrop is put up. It also has the advantage that if I mess it up it is pretty much out of sight.

Ulrich- glad you are back. I was getting worried about you.

Everybody take care.

Good morning.

Where is our number one Berkshire fan (Duke)? Stan's outstanding painting of NKP 744 is fantastic!

Stan ... Do you have a copy available of Beebe and Clegg's "The Train We Rode"? It has many great old photos. All B&W, of course. There are two photos of CB&Q's Aeolus in action. The caption calls it a Pacific, but it's a Hudson.

Ulrich ... Drawing looks good. .... STAMP OF APPROVAL issued.

Ray ..... Your interior looks absolutely real. What a greeat job. ..... Question: Will the roof be removable so you can open the building for people to see your details? Your board-by-board construction of the roof suggests the roof might not be removable.

Barry... The 1940's photo is really something. I suspect we will never have all of those vehicles available for our layouts.

Where are Vincent, John Der, and JimCG?

Happy Model Railroading

Good Morning!! Coffee, Ed’s OJ and a lot of it. I’ll need something to sweat out and packed with VITAmin C. Better have the #2 Special OE too with a side of Biscuits and gravy and an extra side of bacon please and thanks.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 94. Heat index values as high as 107. Aaaand day one begins and comes out swinging. Looks like tomorrow will be a try for a knockout early in the fight with a projected HI of 113 as the week long Excessive Heat Warning starts off strong.

Ulrich- I like. I assume a water formation under the bridge? And also assume a water fall feeding it?

Well not much to say in here as I used all my blabberings elsewhere on useless drivel.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Barry said "Ulrich: I think that that really looks doable...the question I would have is how short that tunnel would be...whether one could do it as a cut, say."

Barry - it is a short tunnel, but there is a prototype for it on the line I model.
