Prayers for Galaxys' and Ulrichs' mothers.
A breezeless 58 and sunny today yesterday was good as well with the temps staying below 80F. Not much to report on from the layout but I am painting the retaining walls for the elevated section of the layout and picking at the corner building kitbash that hides the column adjacent to the yard.
Brilliant choice of location Ulrich even today the area is loaded with tracks and sidings. By odd coincidence I went right through there on my way back from Mid Ohio last week as the road through Akron was all backed up. You can see much better from the Kenworth but you just can't hop off the highway and stop when you're 70 ft long. Just wouldn't have been comfy in Japan for 4th of July. If I can suggest a time, spring and cherry blossom time is gorgeous or maybe around January when it used to snow and snow and snow in Misawa where I was stationed. There was a 4-6-4 in the center of town on display in a park but I am pretty sure THAT slide got destroyed along with most of the rest of my stuff in the attic. Also had slides of the train trip from Yokohama to Mt Fuji but there you go. Nothing like a house fire to simplify your existance.

Good Morning!! Coffee and a breakfast burrito please. Didn’t sleep well again last night. Odd too. This is twice this week. Oh well. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 95. Heat index values as high as 105. Local guys say 108. Wonder if I could tell the difference. I usually post the weather off of Natn'l Weather Service website. Local guys usually do things like say "gee that was a surprise pop up thunderstorm we had today" refering to a storm the NWS had been predicting for 3 days. I could be a Local Weatherman. "Good morning! Today we'll see.......weather. I would take an umbrella with you today because it may rain. But I wouldn't cancel any outdoor activities because it may not. Join us again this evening at 6 so I can tell you what it did in case you didn't notice." So this is Ohio. Say, we’re close enough we can all stop by Lee’s for coffee and some Sponge Cake. Jerry- Wouldn’t a thinner cushion be not as…..cushiony? Also have they talked about how it may last in comparison to the old ones? Lawn mowers. (Now you watch, I’ll regret saying this as I have to use them today. Or at least the push mower). I have two mowers that I think are great. 1 is a IH Cub Cadet garden tractor 1250. Good tractor. The deck ain’t that good though. Condition wise it’s great, cut quality it stinks. Always has. But, it was given to me by my Dad who bought it new in 1977 back when the garden tractors were built like little tiny farm tractors. No stamped steel frame on these and enough cast iron on the hydrostat and differential and front axle to well...., I don’t what. Has had nothing but tuneups done. Oh except for a muffler and a seat. The other is a John Deere push mower. This was bought out of desparation over my old Lawn Boy that had a bolt seize in a cast aluminum part that, thanks to the US Governments all out prejudicial attack on two cycle lawn and garden equipment, can no longer be had. ANYwhere. OK so I found one on e-bay last week. That was a goodone too. But I will have to admit, I really like the John Deere except it clogs. Cuts way better than the Lawn Boy does too. As for letting gas set in tanks and cans all winter. I do and always have. Both the Lawn Boy and the Deere start right up the first time each year. For the Lawn Boy it usually took three pulls for the very first start of the season. If it took 4, it needed a spark plug. John Deere has one of them fancy always one pull starts and it does what it says it does. The Cub Cadet doesn’t ind old gas either. Starts the same on old as it does fresh. No I don’t use stabilizer either. 82 and feels like 108!!!!! My gosh that is beyond sauna. I didn’t think humidity went that high and still be able to see through it. I’ll be praying for the Mothers in trouble today. Welp, not in any hurry to get outside. I have to mow today. Then w**k tonight. No dew this morning so if not for neighbors I’d be out mowing. That is the only thing I don’t like about living in town. You have to watch what you do during the “quiet hours” which I believe out number the noisy ones. Of course, the area were I grew up (Mom's house) has gotten more populated and the new neighbors probably wouldn’t be out with you doing stuff to beat the heat. Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

I'm a small town boy. A product of two people from even smaller towns. I don’t talk on topic….. I just talk.
Well Todd, you must live in a different universe than I. Lawn equipment never starts in the spring unless stored with fuel stabilizer (and no, I haven't run surplus race gas in them for years). Once running, usually no problems, but the wearout rate on parts is phenomenal (think maybe the kids run over everything in their paths?)
As for quiet hours, We were serenaded by AC/DC until almost 11pm last night along with PA announcements from the Little League field adjacent to the house. Used to be the park had a ban on PA's and crowd noise wasn't a problem. There was a meeting where the league officials and their #1 enabler swore blind if alllowed to put in PA's so they could host tournaments, they would be off by 9pm weekdays and 10pm weekends and not used for regular league play. Now every field has a PA and they blast away to all hours. Call the cops you say? The PAL is the biggest offender so no hope there. Here Vinnie, you may have the soapbox back and no we're not anti sport. The CFO and the kids all played and now coach but really, this is too much. Yeah, yeah Vinnie, I'm moving along, sheesh. At least the macarena is passee now. J.R.

Yard Wars The Next Day Hum, my right arm is starting to itch a little. Maybe the Poison Ivy did score on me. I don't see any red yet so I am crossing my fingers.
I used a rake to pull the vines off the house, cut the vine at the root and carried it with the rake. Dumped them over my fences into a area of the front yard I don't do anything with, big bunch of evergreen bushes.
Far as the Lawn Mower I am guessing the belt slipped off the pulley that drive the front wheels. I will have to admit I was pushing it pretty hard last night. I hope there is instructions in the owners manual for replacing the belt.
Todd You are right about new mowers and older gas. I do use stabilizer now, I think that is what killed the first Toro last year but it was never a easy starter. I now add stabilizer to the gas can when I get gas.

I mentioned I had been working on my SD7's and SD9's. For each of teh six, I added extr headlights, sunshades, spark arrestors, and antennas. Here is one of them. I have bothe Burlington Route paint schemes (red and black).

It's a bright sunny day here in the Finger Lakes region this morning. Currently 71°F on it's way up to 79°F later today.
Oh, nice place for the move Ulrich! Easy drive for me to get here. I just have to get on at exit 42 of the NYS Thruway, stay right on I-90 until I get to Cleveland and then head South. Hope we can do some serious rail fanning this month.

He acquired some abandoned rail lines and long story short several grain elevators and 3 coal mines re-opened and he was making a huge profit. The Toledo and Ohio Central RR (TOC) operated between Columbus and Toledo and primarily hauled Grain and coal through all the little grain elevator towns until leased by NYC and then by PennCentral. The L.S. & W. connects with the T.O.C. and the C&O in Walbridge, OH.
Oh and there were lots of Berks on the TOC

This month's location of the diner is about 120 miles from my home. But one of its sister railroads, the Pittsburgh & Ohio Central, is just across the Ohio River from me. So for those who aren't familar with these railroads, here is a photo of their original paint schemes:
The only major difference is the lettering, Ohio Central System versus Pittsburgh & Ohio Central. Since being bought up by the G&W, some locomotives have been appearing in G&W's paint scheme of orange and black. It will probably be some time before that happens here. I have to admit I wouldn't mind seeing one of Pittsburgh & Ohio Central's SW1500 in new paint. Tom

Todd...Factory says thinner cushion will still be comfortable...The chair is super Heavy Duty..post to handle up to 750 pounds with dual motors..also has 2 back up battery...

What a great day here in the Finger Lakes! The sun is shining, and I have been doing some odds and ends. mostly outside, enjoying the day and the property. Son came over and brought #2 granddaughter with him. he help me load some folding tables they want to borrow for there "Garage Sale" tomorrow.... Well, they are not actually selling the garage... More they are trying to get rid of the junk items they have been keeping in the garage so they might be able to actually park a car or one of his boats, or store more junk items out there.....
Need to get doing some more stuff today..... Have I mentioned what a wonderful day it his here? Oh, I did didn't I.... Catch you all later.... Hee, hee, grin, grin!

I'm BAAAACK!
Well, kinda/sorta. Been an interesting time since January--contacted Salmonella poisoning which shut down my kidneys, ended up on (and off and on and off again) dialysis, lost 45 pounds (like I didn't need it, LOL!) and while I was recuperating, my 96 year old mother died. Not the BEST year of my life, to coin a vast understatement.
But, I've got about 40% kidney function now, which is sufficient to stay off dialysis. New diet--no red meat, alcohol or green vegetables that begin with the letter "A", just turkey, any kind of fruit I want (except oranges), vegetables that do NOT begin with the letter "A", and all the Nutragrain snack bars I can stuff into my face. Right now I'm eating so many peaches that I feel like I'm single-handedly supporting the agricultural economy of Georgia and anywhere else those nifty little things grow.
BUT--I'm feeling pretty darned good for a now-skinny old fart. Going back to teaching in August, and am now out in the garage a goodly part of the day resusciating the Yuba River Sub, which has largely been abandoned since January. Track-cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, checking wiring, all the fun stuff. I've been putting in some scenery in the bare spots (I posted in WPF today) and am happily up to my elbows in Sculptamold again.
Picked up a couple of used Articulateds (you're surprised, LOL?)--an old Balboa SP AC-9 2-8-8-4 with the STRANGEST reduction gear I"ve ever seen, and a cute little GN 2-6-8-0 that I just couldn't pass up. Got enough of the Walthers UP 'City' passenger cars to make a respectable "City of San Francisco" to go with my BLI E-6 units, and yes, FINALLY picked up the MTH "Daylight" cars to go with my Balboa GS-4, which is now a Very Happy Camper. That MTH set is just gorgeous. I'll download some photos the next time I run it.
So right now, it looks as if I've got my summer all planned out, assuming that the weather out here stays reasonable (our rivers are still running high with snow-melt, and with the amount of snow left right now on the Sierra peaks, it looks as if they'll be running high until at least October!). Some of the ski-slopes are even re-opening for the Fourth. Skiing in July--feels like Switzerland around here, LOL!
Ulrich--Galaxy--my prayers for your mothers. I'll remember them at Mass this weekend.
Sawyer: AP History, huh? BE PREPARED! That's one INTENSE class. At Jesuit, we have a subsidiary section of the class called "Trench Warfare", that is incredibly popular with the AP students. I attended one out of curiosity last year, and it was just a HOOT! Took in everything from the American Revolution to post WWI. One of my favorite students signed up for it, and came into my office grousing that they made him a Medic when they re-enacted the Battle of the Somme. Oh well-- Looks as if your academic plate is really full this year. Best of luck to you. Hope you've got time to get in at least SOME Rugby, though. We're still taking No Prisoners with our team here at Jesuit.
Well, that's about it for now. I promise to keep popping in now that I'm feeling human again. But right now I've got to get back to the Sculptamold on Yuba Pass. And then tackle that HUGE pink area just outside of Deer Creek yard. Never ends, does it?

It's all about the coach...if I had been coming to the diner in the winter y'all would have heard a LOT of moaning and gripping about my coach. I explained it in the previous diner, but let me rehash it here: one game this year we had three new guys and then had 3 or 4 other guys (basically half the team) playing new positions and although we played hard, got beat bad. All the time our coach is preaching how rugby is a team game. then suddenly, when we lose bad yet have replaced half our team, it shouldn't matter because we should still be playing at the same level. Uhm, ever heard of a thing called TEAM CHEMISTRY?! Also, my captain had no idea how in the world to lead (he was basically a jerk to me), and a couple of the other guys as well as him are into some of the lesser pursuits in this world (drugs and drinking for example; after our first win three different parents called my coach saying they didn't want their kids hanging around our rugby players because of drinking and driving and drugs...so you see why I don't want to be associated with those fellows)
Sop basically I'm not quitting the game, I'm just going to wait till college and hopefully the rugby team there is better.
Tom, bout time you got back!
