Surround speakers have been silent since the Onkyo receiver started freezing the satellite picture, even thought it was set to "thru". So tonight I hooked the receiver up for only sound and the satellite box picture signal going directly to the tv. Sounded great hearing the speakers again....for about 10 minutes....then the most horrendous noise blasted out from the speakers. Cats when flying out of the room. Then, no sound. This receiver has been nothing but trouble. It's also off warranty. Dang!

Went down to the train room, but only looked around the wife's layout. To tired to even run trains.

HAPPY JULY FOURTH!

Been working on the 1:87 Great Lakes freighter a friend gave me after his cat knocked it off a shelf.  I also installed the wheel stops for the Huletts and the dock cranes.  The track layout for the coal mine area has been laid out and is ready for Styrofoam and track.

I’ll be lurking in the corner booth catching up on the posts. Thoughts and prayers for those in need.

Must get rolling, Will check back in later.    But did want to wish best wishes and good luck to all those handling Parent and In-Law problems.  My heart goes out to you.  Been there, Done that,   and it is a thankless job.  However for their wonderful dedication to us over the years through sickness and those teen age years, it is hardly a repayment tho difficult.   ( I think)

Not much happening today. I'll be going over to my sisters place this afternoon for a three family barbeque. I'm sure they'll be hauling friends in too so it should be quite a crowd.

We had a good evening last night watching fireworks from on the boat. There were lots of other boats with people doing likewise. It was a very nice fireworks display. Boat horns were sounded to approve the more spectacular fireworks.

Happy Independence Day to all United Statsians!  (would say Americans, but I don’t think the rest of the continent celebrates the day like the United States does for some reason). Yesterday, the weather for today was to be sunny with a few clouds. Now, it looks like rain. The weather guessers say….(shuffle, shuffle)..A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85. AND as I look at the radar, it looks to be could rain for a few hours. I knew we should have packed up and headed to Louisiana. Oh well too late now. They may still have the get together, it isn’t till afternoon. I think.

Well ( drying up…(chuckle) see what you started Ray!!)I see I missed Bill buying  last night. Should have stopped in.

The Gooseberry Cherry pie was….actually very tasty. Problem was, and I knew it but of course did it anyway, cut it too warm. Too runny. This morning it is thicker and I knew I should have waited but, MAN I love pie warm from the oven .(wipes slobbers from mouth)

No Ray, it wasn’t just Curt that wanted the recipe, it was Curt who asked ! Now I have it and agree with Tom! I will try it soon.

Now to sit back and wait for someone to ask for Jeff’s lemonade recipe.

Ken- I think last time around, we figured where you have problem with Tab is, the top bar is the bottom string (or high E) as you hold the guitar(but as you look down while playing it becomes the top ) and mainly, if I remember correctly, your main issue was there is no timing. You have to be familiar with the song and recognize the notes when playing to be able to make the lead for Sweet Home Alabama (or any song for that matter) sound like it’s supposed to. Otherwise, it will sound just like a bunch of notes until you recognize the part and add your own timing.

Welp, hasn’t rained just yet so….I may get outside and do a few things. Don’t know what yet and I have to go to Mom’s and check that the Realtor didn’t leave the doors open and / or turn the A/C instead of up in temps, he likes to turn it off. Last time he flipped the wrong switch and turned the thing from Autofan to fan. You know what that means. Couple times ago he left the front door open. Not much crime out there, but lets not just hang a sign. I mean it does sit on the county hardroad and traffic has picked up considerable since the days of me.  

Maybe, when I get back. I’ll get to play with my trainset until we leave and maybe after if she doesn’t draaaaag me to Sherman for their fireworks. I believe our town had a sufficient display. Besides, the same company does it and it’s supposedly the same show. So it will be reruns.

Happy Independence Day

   Doing my best to grow the economy this morning by w..king in the shop. Did spend some time in the basement last night finding the oil dealer and coal dealer kits to set out and better plan the back area outside the yard loop. Also put in the first siding transition from the trackbed foam to ground level. This i did by marking out the path and gradually loweringthe track bed 3/16" into the foam for the incline. Most of the sidings in my area are lower than the adjacent tracks and many have no height difference from the ground level beyond what's done by the ties. Real fancy sidings have a drainage ditch dug to carry water away.

   All this guitar Tap and whatever else stuff reminds me why I played drums. All that was required was keep a beat and neotiate the "fills".

    Sawyer - be careful  son, You'll put your eye out ! Seriously my cousin managed to blow his finger off and deafen himself in the bargain one year. We of course behaved much more responsibly only blowing up one tree and crimping the occasional roman candle so it would expode. One of my other cousins was in Recon and showed us how to make time delay fuses so we didn't have too much worry about premature explosions and later when we got into rockets we used copper tube driven into the ground to aim them and only suffered the occasional misguided missle. Don't do so much anymore as Rupert the dog hates the noise and last time we found him stuffed in a wardrobe afterward.

   Museum went well yesterday. The socket (octagonal since you ask) we made for the 44 tonner fuel level gauge fit though it could be looser and we decided on going forward with plans for a 6 bay round house with a through track out the back of the second bay for the even more in the future back shop. There are two pits remaining in the foundation and we think there was a drop table that went in there as well though  more excavation is needed to confirm THAT>

   Chris - can you use a pencil to circle the offending decals before you wet the sheets? At least THAT way you'd know where the little buggers were.

   And speaking of little buggers, Ken be glad they are nats and not nits.

  Jeff - nice pics lately.

  Tom - Is THAT one of the Beichstaller (sp) bridges converted to single track? I have one mostly done from the last layout but without all the guard rail and hand rails, etc. Does it hold up all right? I needed to reglue most of mine after moving and storing it.

No time like the present. In 22 ounce glass combine lemonade (your choice of flavor) 8 drops Tabasco sauce and the juice squeezed from 1 jalapeno pepper. DON'T INHALE WHILE THE GLASS IS CLOSE TO YOUR MOUTH. YOU WILL REGRET IT! Take a sip first to see if you can handle it. Then you might try taking a little more but I wouldn't suggest taking a big gulp on your first time around. Take your time. Enjoy it. Just don't breathe on the wife's flowers as they may die on the spot.

Happy 4th of July to all those south of the border.  Be careful with those fireworks and don't drink and drive.

We didn't go to the beach on July 1 (Canada Day) as planned because it was raining off and on so we went the next day.  Weather was hot with a nice cool breeze off the water.  The beach was packed.  The parking lots were full.  The campground was full.  The concession stand was doing a roaring business, especially the ice cream window which had long lineups.  We had a good time.

We're in for a hot week.  Temperatures are predicted to be pushing 30C (86F).  Yesterday was very humid and today we're getting some rain and they're predicting thunderstorms.  Well, the people who were complaining about the cool wet weather up to now are getting what they wished for.  Be careful what you wish for.

Happy Firecracker Day, everyone!  Hope it's a safe and (relatively) sane one.  I'm spending most of it out in the garage again today.  Hit 102 yesterday, but with the fan on, I was able to weather most of the heat.  Strange thing--now that I'm 45 pounds skinnier, the Valley heat doesn't seem to bother me as much.  In fact, I find that I can get 'chilled' kind of easily, lately.  Dr. says that could be from both 'age' (C'MAAWN NOW!) and the fact that I spent several months with my blood being pumped through a machine.  At any rate, I wasn't sweating like a little piggy yesterday.  Supposed to be about the same temp today.  Though they've got thunderstorms predicted for the Sierra--remnants of that Mexican storm that have come north. 

JR:  Yes, that's a model of the Beichstahl bridge.  I kinda/sorta "Americanized" it.  It's been out in the garage spanning Bullard's Bar for about the past seven years, and has held up beautifully in an uninsulated garage.  It was the only arch bridge I could find to span that pre-planned 'gap' short of scratch-building.  I like it. 

Jeff:  WHOO!  That Lemonade recipe sounds like something akin to a hand-grenade, LOL!   I've got a buddy who uses Tabasco like ketchup on his eggs and hash-browns.  Going out to breakfast with him is--to say the least--an Interesting Experience. 

Ken:  Glad that Ray explained Tablature to you--it's pretty Greek to me.  Although I've got to say that Guitar Tab is a lot 'clearer' than 17th-Century Lute Tablature--now THAT looks as if someone splashed paint all over a box, LOL!    But it reminds me of when I was in college and we had to transcribe Mensural Notation (a Medieval predecessor to standard modern music notation) into modern notatation for a quiz.  It wasn't too difficult for me (Genius that I am, LOL!) but the entire class was VERY surprised when the result turned out to be a Cole Porter tune ("I Get A Kick Out Of You").   We had a very WEIRD instructor, God bless him. 

Sawyer:  You DID leave some fireworks for the rest of the population in SC, didn't you, LOL?  Man, that is a STASH!

Well, my two Biggest Fans (Spooky and Uff-Dah) are extremely happy that Daddy's back into the hobby, and even extremely HAPPIER that Daddy is again using the kitchen table as a work-bench.  Because this means that there are all those fascinating little PARTS to take off with when Daddy's got his head turned away for a moment or two.  One of my projects this summer is to turn some of my older brass into all-wheel pickup (insulated track-wipers on one side with a wire lead going up through the frame to the motor) to get smoother operation.  I can't wait to see what those two are going to do with my littlel packages of Tomar wipers, LOL!  

Well, that's about it from SunnyCal this morning.  I have two things calling my name--Sculptamold and a Yellowstone that needs its wheels cleaned.  Choices--choices--

Flo, just a lemonade for me right now.  Huh?  Jeff's recipe?  I'll pass on THAT for the moment.  Don't want to spoil my appetite if if doesn't sit well.  Got a picnic to go to in a while....

Tom W, wasn't me THAT explained the tablature notation thing....  I can read chord tablature, but find standard Western Notation far easier to read for classic guitar.  And THAT has little things like the rhythm in it as well......  I have to get my guitar out soon and start getting Carcassi (among others) back under my fingers.  Haven't been doing much at all musically for some time now.  With my hearing, I can no longer sing.  With the hearing aids, I can't hear the accompaniment, with them I can't find the pitch.......  Gave up playing English Handbells a couple years ago when there was a change of directors at church.  I didn't mind working with the new director as she is a fine musician and a great person, but there were a a person who came back to the group that I have trouble being nice to and hate being on the same planet with....  (Long story involving some ruined careers because of her and some really nasty rumors that she started, etc.)  I figured it would be in everybody's best interest for me to remove myself from the group.

Just got an email about a test run yesterday of RG&E 1941, a 45 Tonner that has been in the shop for a few years and is almost ready to see service on the R&GV RR.  Both prime movers are now running properly and all she needs is to have the freshly painted engine compartment doors reinstalled.  She should be in use during Diesel Days in August at the museums!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN_KcQH-77o

Actually it's not bad at all. The Tabasco and the juice of the jalapeno combine to make a smoother flavor than either has by themselves. When diluted in the lemonade it's spicy but not as bad as you'd think. People think it's going to be really hot but it isn't unless you have a sensitive tongue. It doesn't take long to get used to and you'll never look at regular lemonade the same way again.

 Evening Folks

  Window A/C Galaxy Why did you recommend the 10,000 BTU unit? I just looking for a little extra help, not replaces the central air with window units.

 My Central A/C was serviced last May and repaired. It burnt up something, I forget what right now, because it ran so much. It does have a very slow leak, needs to be charged about every 3 to 4 years. But, even last summer after it was charged, it would still run all the time when it hit above 93 degrees.

Ken, you had originally written: "Should I buy a window A/C to help my old Central A/C? My central Air unit has to be somewhere around 30 + years old. With the temps we are hitting now, the central air unit runs 24 hours a day and the house never really cools down. In fact my garage will get cooler than the house with the old AC window unit I have out here. 

 Do you think a window unit in the house may lower my electric bill? Or at the very lease not raise the bill much? House needs to be a little cooler, say by 5 degrees. House is 1500 sq foot and I am thinking about a 5000 BTU unit in the family room. That will keep me cooler (I now sleep in the family room) and cool the kitchen as well. The air intake for the central unit is in the hallway 2 feet from the kitchen.

 Other odd thing is the pricing. A 5000 BTU unit is $99.00, a 6500 BTU unit is $160.00 and a 8000 BTU unit is $209.00 and a 10,000 BTU unit is $250.00?  So lets see, I could buy one 10000 unit for $250.00, or two 5000 units for $200.00? Just does not seem right. If anyone cares to look at the inits I am thinking about they are on line at the Lowe's site."

You mention the family room AND the kitchen. We have a LR that is 13.6x16 connected to a kitchen that is 11X13.6 and the 12,000 BTU unit we have will cool effectively both rooms. If yours are close together, a 5,000 BTU unit may cool whatever room it is in if small, but may not make much difference in the other room, so I suggested the 10,000 unit there for those two rooms, only because you mention the pricing on the units named above, so I thought you were considering them.

A 5,000 BTU unit is only really good at cooling a 12x12 room at maximum, really. So if you family room and Kitcen are larger than that and connected, the bigger unit should do the job.

YOu should save electricity over the C A/C as you aren't needing to cool the whole house, only parts you use most. Any a/c will help keep you cooler than the C A/C apparently is doing now. you can set the C A/c at say 75* to pick up slack that the window units may not, AND to take up slack as the window untis should be shut off during possible or real thunderstorms to avoid them being blown should the power go out. THe C A/C is less vulnerable I guess to that.

If you get the Energy star rated units, either way, you will save money over the C a/C unit that is old. It SHOULD in fact, reduce your electric bill as the energy star untis will take the brunt of hard work off the older less efficient C A/C.

We looked at a house that had about the same sq footage {300 more than we have} and had a 25 yr old C A/C unit. the cost for heat, electric and C A/C on the 25 yr old unit was twice what we pay and the house is better insulated than our tin can trailer with a 5,600 and a 12,000 BTU units to cool it down! We also could see the C A/C unit would need to be replaced sometime soon, so it was an older unit.

So, to lower your electric bill and take the "heat of" the old C A/C unit you have, I recommended the larger unit for your family room and kit, where you probably spend most of your time when home anyway. If that is at one end of the house, and say a BR someone sleeps in is at teh far end of house and warmer there, another 5,000 window A/c unit there would help to keep the whole house cooler, most definietly likely if you pick energy star units. WE have the 12,000 unit in the fornt LR and Kit. and the 5,600 unit in the far back master br and it keeps us around 70* throuhgout, AND we don't always use the units. {the Lr 12,000 gets shut down 9 pm to 6 am, and the Br gets used at night and during real hot days or when we nap.} The front room gets down to 64-65*, but we let it fall that much because as the day wears on it WILL warm up in here to 70*-72* later in the day as the sun comes late afternoon/evening to the front of the trailer, making it warmer, even with A/c set on same temp.

I am sure you will save on electric costs with energy star units that take the brunt of cooling off the old C A/C unit,and keep you nice and cool. A 5,000 BTU unit by itself, may or may not do it alone for a large area. ANd if your C A/C unit needs recharging every few years, you definitely have a leak somewhere. and two window units are far cheaper than a new C A/c unit from say, Sears, who has a Save $300 off a newly installed C A/C system right now! that coupin is equal to the costs of the window units, which if you don't snap up soon, may go UP in price as it gets hotter and units sell down!

That is just my opinion and experience with teh A/cs here. YOurs may vary.

Ken: I use a 12,000 btu A/C unit to cool my 8x25 trailer. I previously used a 10,000 but it wasn't exactly cutting the mustard on these really hot days. The control dial on it burned out and I bought the 12,000 btu unit. The temp stays below 75 even on the hottest days. Here's a tip. Don't trust the little thin filter that comes with the unit. Cut the matting out of a paper rimmed fiberglass filter and put that between the factory filter and the grille. When the fiberglass matt gets dirty you can pull it out and clean it with a vacuum (I use my Shop-Vac) or you can replace it with another piece of fiberglass matt. Doing this you'll very rarely have to clean the cheap screen filter if at all and it keeps the coils from getting plugged up.

It´s been a day filled with lots of emotions. My Mom is fairly stable, but now my Dad is succumbing to the emotional stress we are having these days. Still frustrated over the Onkyo receiver. A friend suggested I have it fixed and sell it on the used market, then look for something more basic to power the surround speakers. Have five 6ohm speakers and a sub sitting dormant again.

To hot to work outside today. Just chilling here under a fan.

Good Afternoon!

Happy July 4th to all our neighbours to the south!!

I took today as holidays so am home which certainly beats being at work. We went down to visit our friends near Theif River Falls over the weekend and had a really great time. They grilled some steaks for us as it was our anniversary yesterday. I picked up my train stuff order from Kleins and Trainworld, mostly track related things for the N scale from Kleins and a really nifty heavy mountain from Trainworld.  Never mind the name of Tom's cat, my friend actually uses Uff Dah as a exclamation. Needless to say there are rather more than a few people of Norwegian descent in that part of Minnesota.

Speaking of Tom, it is really great to see you back in the Diner. I, like most others, had been wondering what on earth had happened to you. I was wondering how Spooky and Uff Dah were doing but I see from your latest post that they are still up to their old thieving ways. Say do you have any idea how you contracted semonella poisoning?  I like those GN lokies. GN had a line up to Winnipeg and ran daily passenger service to Minneapolis. The first diesels I ever saw were E units pulling that train.

I am really happy with the fuel mileage of the new car. Coming back we were held up at customs for over an hour instead of the usual 5 minutes as there was so much traffic. Anyway as it was now dark I just went 100 kph which is 62 mph. I got 43 mpg. ( imperial gallon) which I guess would be 35 or so to the U.S. gallon. Not bad for a 3.2 litre 6.

My MIL took my wife and I out for lunch today to celebrate our anniversary so I think I'll have a Very light supper tonight. I might even do some more work on the underpass especially as there is a Severe Thunderstorm warning for us right now.

CN Charlie ....  Wish I road on those GN trains you mentioned. 

Here’s a video of my layout I made a year or so ago.  It’s a local passenger train, and you can see much of the layout but not all of it. Photography is not good. I’ll have to learn to make better videos some day.
