Good Morning!! Coffee and Biscuits and sausage gravy and eggs scrambled loose please. Thank you. What’s this? Bhut Jolokia sauce. Um….no than you. You can have what I call novelty peppers. Did you see where they use it as an elephant deterrent? They also are working on using it as a weapon in grenades. Ya. I’ll have a big splop of THAT on my eggs. I’ll just use some of Jeff’s Jalapeno sauce. It’s hot enough for me. I like some heat yes, but I like flavor too. Get too hot, and to me it destroys the food. What is the point of too much? Depends on the peppers used and the food it’s used in or on. I prefer Jalapenos because they are not too hot, and have a nice flavor to boot. I like others too, but to add a bit of zing not melt my taste buds off. I'm not that manly I suppose.

Gonna make this short today………ROFLMAO!!!!!

Seriously, A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 87.

Ken- Yup, that’s the Tab of which Ray and I (and you) speak. I have copied and pasted so ask away in reference to what you have posted and I / we will try to help you out. If it gets too involved, may be best to PM. I'll tell you now up right off the git go, on the 5, 6, and 8th examples I don't understand the bend on what is marked as an open string. They also do the same thing on the 1st and 2nd with the pull off or p. Pull off of what? Many times on the bend, they will tell you how far to bend. I assume this would be just a half step or maybe a feel it type bend? Ray will have to step in on those two points cause I don’t know about that. Since a professional wrote it, we'll need a professional to decipher it.Laugh

Well, I must do a slew of little things today way too numerous to even get into.

Lee- From time to time we will have some of that dangerous lightning here too. Many times though we have safe lightning. (chuckle) I’m surprised you don’t. Guess that's a perk of living in a state with a silent "s".

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

 Morning Folks.

Flo, I will take a Daylight Special and a Big Dew.

Well, need to be round up some tools and head to work on the Daytona. While I know the car can be fixed, I don't think it would be worth spending over $300.00 on, that is about twice of what it is worth. Heck, if I fill up the gas tank I double its value!   Smile, Wink & Grin

Todd OK, lets see if I can figure this out.

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

E-------------12--------p----------          Start with High E what does the P mean. I know bend and hammer

B-------12------15---12---------           Then B string 12 15 and then 12 again

G-14(B)---------------------------           Next G on the 14th and bend

D------------------------------------

A------------------------------------

E------------------------------------

I guess my big question is how do you know where to start? Not all riffs are going to start with the high E. Well, I guess when you play it, you will know what sounds right.

This was one of the simple ones. I have one where it shows a lot more notes and that is when I got confused. I will have to see if I can find it again.

Well, guess it is time to round up a compression tester.

 Wish me luck.

Mornin' Bill!  Mornin' folks!

Zoe I'll have the #2 special, over easy on the eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sourdough toast along with lots of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR Mug.  Please and thank you Ma'am!

Galaxy........  be nice to Bill!  he has been opening the diner in the morning for years and years.  He gives the waitresses a ride to work each morning.  THAT's why Bill is always grinning and happy.  (I think he may be related to Vinny, so watch it!  OK?)

Todd and Ken....  I don't use or know THAT form of tablature notation. I think it would be far easier to read standard modern western notation.  I think it was made up by somebody who didn't like their music teacher and was just trying to confuse things...... Whistling  I think Ken already knows a lot more about it than I do.  Maybe Barry can chime in.  I can even read hand written score like this:

Vivaldi, BTW (I used it as a CD cover many years ago).  But the stuff Ken put here, I have no clue........

Best be moving on for a bit.  Lots of things THAT should be done today (and a few will be, I hope!).

Later!

Good morning. It's 85° Partly cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning. The high will be 96° and mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance in the afternoon.

One Tabasco lemonade please. Thank you. I hope today is quieter than yesterday was. I had to take my mother to seemingly half the places she likes in town for this and that and I can tell you there's lots of places she likes. Most of it was business, paying bills for this and that, picking stuff up at the pharmacy. She wanted to go to Stage to do some shopping so I dropped her off there and Wal-Mart to get some things I needed. It's so nice when you have one of your parents credit card for such things. That's kind of like my payment for chauffeuring her around. All I had to get was a couple of boxes of gauze pads, a bottle of 91% alcohol, some masking tape and some drink flavor mixes (raspberry lemonade, blueberry açaí, peach mango, strawberry kiwi and orange early rise). I also got sandwich fixings and two packs of thin sliced bagels. I use them instead of bread for sandwiches. I took my stuff home then went back and picked her up at Stage. She was just finishing her shopping. Once I got her home I started in to work on my van. The windshield wiper bushing have been giving me a lot of grief. The ones I installed not too long ago were wearing through and I had used a light grease as was called for. It was evident that something heavier was needed so I got a bottle of Super Disk Brake Caliper Lubricant. It's made to be used on all the metal, plastic and rubber parts of brake calipers and it's pretty thick so it won't just drip out as I suspect the other stuff did. It's also VERY slippery not to mention pricey. One bottle cost almost $13 but if it works it's worth it. I replaced all the wiper transmission rod bushings and made sure they all got a thorough slathering of lubricant. It's hard to get in there with any tools so I had to press all the rods and bushings together by hand but I could hear when they all snapped together and even I can feel when they go together as they should. Two nice things about doing this work on a large van is it's right there at my chest level and there's not a bunch of hood to reach over. By the time that was done I was done too. I was worn out and wanted nothing more to do with any kind of work. Not surprisingly I slept in this morning.

I was looking at the calender this morning and realized that my younger sister will be watching the last space shuttle launch on her 49th birthday. She should have no problem remembering in later years what day the last one went up.

Good Afternoon everyone!

I thought I'd drop by the diner today and show off the N&W painting. It still has a way to go, but I think it's going to be ok. I found this shot of J number 612, and inverted it so it's pointing in the opposite direction of the photo.  That's a 56 Chevy down below. I used to sketch and paint old cars back in my high school days, and I thought I'd pose it in O. Winston Link fashion. Here it is:

Jeff- I like the K4 display in the park. I'm guessing it's a Bachmann.

Everyone have a good day!

Stan - all I can say is Wow - you are surpassing yourself!

Now that my Mom is on the road to improvement, I feel a little relaxed. I even was able to spend a little time at my Dad´s PC to watch a few steam videos on Youtube. His PC is a slow one, so it takes a lot of patience to wait for the download.

You want to be in for some laughs? There is a remake of the old "scratchbuild vs. R-T-R" thread. Being a curious guy, I looked it up, just to see if there are any new arguments I have not read before. It is basically the same set of people kvetching about how R-T-R is spoiling the hobby, with the same old set of arguments. I have never before read such a load of "bull muck" (forum rules will not allow me to use the correct term), so I decided to give it a LaughLaughLaugh instead of a Thumbs Down. Someone seriously thinks that R-T-R is making the layouts look uniform. Hasn´t the chap heard that a SD40-2 looks like a SD40-2, be it R-T-R or be it scratchbuild? Most of us use Preiser figures on our HO layouts - they have a German complexion and millions of twin brothers...

Oh, oh, Vinnie seems to wake up and Chloe is reachng for the SoapBox

I KNOW MORE THAN RAY DOES!!!! I KNOW MORE THAN RAY DOES!!! How often do you get to say that! (the preceding comment is in no way accurate. Just because I know something Ray does not does, NOT mean in any fashio I know more. However, for the purposes of this conversation......it works. Laugh )

Ken- I GOT IT!! I figured out what your problem is. You read left to right irregardless of what string the fret number is onYes. In the above example, your first "note", if you will, will be the G string 14th fret. second note will be the B string 12th fret, third note the E string 12th fret and so on. The P means "pull off". Problem is, there is no note fretted to pull off of. That's my question on that. Likewise on the others, they have no note fretted to bend either. Unlike the example above)  Notice each number is staggard. That means each note is struck seperately. If you see two or more notes on different string in a vertical line then they are struck together as a chord.

Ray- Just ribbing you. I would say I am surprised you don't know what iscommonly called GuitarTableture, but yet again I'm not. To my understanding, it was created to speed up the process of writing a guitar part, say in a recording studio or in your recliner, as a quick and easy way to duplicate the voicings due to the many possibilities of a specific note on several strings. It also has a popular by product in that it let people who could not read music, play a song on the guitar. Many "accomplished Musicians" such as yourself, and I mean no disrespect at all, feel it is a juvenilistic way of "writing" music ( to which some will not acknowledge it ismusic at all) and won't even discuss it without a sneer. Some also say it is the downfall of the art of writing music. To eah there own.

See? "Rivet Counters all over. "We are not alone!" Laugh

Two enclosed trailers (tractors are not Ulrich Models. The farthest trailer still has an Ulrich factory paint scheme (Garrett Truck lines)

I still have Ulrich Models kits to assemble. One is a Mack truck tractor, and the other is another enclosed trailer.

Jeffery Hum, I bet your lemonade would kill the last few Gnat's I have! Smile, Wink & Grin More than likely me as well!

Kill them? Nah! It might give them a swagger to their step as they grab you by the shirt and say 'Smile when you say that!'. It would take something much stronger to kill them, maybe Da Bomb Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce (855,000 Scoville units). The hottest Tabasco (habanero) is only 8,000 Scoville unit and the Tabasco I use is a mere 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units.

You got it. Bachmann Spectrum. The wiring in the tender was shorted out and at least one of the plugs were broken. Wiring in the loco wasn't much better so it was a perfect candidate for a park display. It's glued to the track with a black silicone adhesive so it's not going anywhere without a whole bunch of help.

 After Noon Folks

 Flo, a Beer please.

Services will be held this Saturday for my departed Daytona. Crying

Well maybe, after all I saved the 69 Charger that broke in half from rust!

OK, I was cheap and lazy today. I only bought two new spark plugs and did not run the compression test. I pulled all the plugs and found two real nasty ones! My hopes where up that the plugs where the only problem. Plus the delivery guys knew I was at the store and bought me lunch, so I had to eat it right?

So after wards I installed the 2 new plugs, and clean the 2 better looking plugs. After I knocked off the carbon I found the tips where all most gone. Not being that smart, I went a head and installed them.

Now, the car ran better, but still ran like crap. So I still have a little hope left. Friday or Saturday I will install 2 more new plugs and give it the Hail Mary and see what I got.

I did drive it about 3 miles, still no blue or white smoke and ran cool so there may be a little hope left. If I was a beating man, I would guess the head gasket failed between two of the cylinders.

Todd a couple of car questions. While the Daytona is not worth fixing I still like to look at my options.

1 Sometimes you can find better prices in smaller towns. Is there any places you know of (this is going to sound dirty) that have cheap head's? I don't want a rebuilt head, but a used one. I would want a guarantee that the head is straight and no cracks. I will have that checked before I install it.

2 Do you know where I can find a on line engine manual for the 2.5 liter Dodge engine?

3 Is it any harder setting the timing belt than installing a timing chain as far as lining up timing marks?

Book time to install the Daytona head is 5.5 so that would be $528.00 in labor. But, other than the fact I never worked on a 2.5 liter there is no reason I should not be able to do it my self other than the fact I have gotten lazy. Heck, if I can can work on Big Block MOPAR this little motor should not be that hard.

OK Todd Guitar Question. While I think I understand what you mean would you have time to talk with me on the phone on my dime. I type real slow and Beer real fast. Big Smile

Has anyone seen or heard from Vincent? I was going to buy two of the engines he did not want. I  was ready to send the check but have never heard back from him. Maybe him the his coworker have hooked up. Whistling

Jeffery Did you by chances buy some Engines from Vincent? If so, not a problem if anyone here knows how slow I react it is you. Laugh

Ulrich Hope things keep working out for your family. Plus on the selfish side, I want to see more modeling magic in N scale.

Train Front I am just so tickled with how the Old Athearn BB Super Weight Santa Fe Warbonnet is running! Hum, as I was typing it, a passenger car derailed. Whistling

See you all later tonight after I BBQ some burgers and brats.

Afternoon all:

Just got back from Nevada City, my home town.  My sister and I had to get a whole bunch of legal things done about my late mother's estate, and managed to get half done.  Got the bank accounts transferred, but can't get the house title transferred until later on this week--the courthouse is closed for some strange reason until next Monday.  Anyway, I'm doing the paperwork down here to take back when Monday rolls around.   She wanted my sister and I to split everything down the middle, which is just peachy with me  (and my sister).   Sue's taking over the house since she lives in Nevada City, but we'll keep the property in both our names.   With the property values what they are in Nevada City (Out Of Sight, BTW), I keep joking that if we sold it off, we could afford to buy a small European country.  But we'll keep it.

Getting the accounts transferred was a super-fast deal--seems the Accounts Manager at the Nevada City BofA branch also does Officiating for high-school basketball during the season and is a big fan of the team at Jesuit down here in Carmichael, where I teach.  It was kind of Old Home Week, LOL!   Anyway, got that done in record time.   Now we just have to deal with the County Assessor et. al.

While I was there, we had lunch at Humpty-Dumpty, a really neat little restaurant.  I got brave and ordered lemonade and since they had two kinds of Tobasco sauce (red and green) I decided to try out Jeff's recipe.

Hey, Jeff--it's probably not QUITE your recipe, but the lemonade had a Major KICK to it!   Really yummy!  Went really well with the bacon and cheese omelet, too.  And this is from a guy who's not really into Hot Stuff.  But I think you made a Convert, LOL!

Temperature up there in the Sierra was about 90--which is a Heat Wave, and the temperature down here in the Valley right now is about 101.  Hopefully, we're heading to a break in the temperature tomorrow--hope so for everyone at the NMRA Convention.  I'm going to try and hit it on Friday, when the Vendors show--it's not quite so expensive for a non-member that day, I understand.

Too hot to work on the layout today--at least this afternoon.  I'll pump up the fan later in the afternoon and try and get some work done.  I've still got Big Plans for that large pink area just south of the Deer Creek yards and the trestle.  And like I said, I'm now skinny enough to fit into the access holes to get to it.  YAY!!

Spent yesterday improving the pickups on two of my Yellowstones--the Original and the Basket Case I acquired a couple of years ago.  By golly, they run sweeter now, and QUIETER.  Don't know how that happened, but I'm thankful.

That's about all right now from SunnyCal.  There's an NCIS marathon on right now on on one of the satellite stations, and I've got the Incredible Hots for Ziva, so I'm going to go drool for an hour or two.

Best to all.

Tom

Here I am again. Twice in as many week. I guess the heat is getting to me. It's over 100F today, again. The air feels like an oven. Mary Ann and I hauled hay earlyer. She had her tractor without the cab or roof, just wore here large white floppy hat. Crazy old woman. Anyway we got it done and are very happy to get the 20 bales. Since the field is only 11 acres it did very well in this drought.

Not much else happening. It's too hot to even think straight. I may go to the basement and do some more work on getting things straightened up so I can work on or run the MRR. That would be nice.

Mary Ann just came in and said our son called and said that a fire was near his place. He said he'd call back as soon as he knew more.

My best to all.

That's the strange thing. So many people think they won't like it yet once they try it many want more. An seriously, if a 12 year old can handle the Tabasco lemonade recipe how bad can it be? Now if I was to put in a little Blair's 2005 Halloween Reserve (13,500,000 Scoville units), Man I wouldn't EVEN touch THAT! I mean, police grade pepper spray is 5,300,000. Tabasco Original flavor is a mere 5,000 to 8,000. Hardly even a fire cracker.

Evening All,

Paul- I hope your son and his house is OK from the fire.

Barry and Others- The music things that you are posting is really confusing. Way back when I played a instrument I just played from sheet music.

Jeff- Next time I have lemonade I will try your recipe. At one time I liked Tabasco on salad. I really like the idea of a loco monument and I think I am going to borrow your idea with a non running PRR N-1.

Stan- Another awesome painting.

Ken- Best wishes with your car. It looks great in the completed picture. I can visualize it on a drag strip.

Todd- We take lightning very serious here. The first day I moved to FL a farm worker in the area was struck and killed by lightning in a field.

Jerry- What type of track are you using?

Everybody have a great night.

Try it. You might like it. As for the white monument, it's not for the loco but for the Veteran's of Foreign Wars (VFW), dedicated July 12th 1970. Now if you're talking of the loco as a monument and not just a display item to take up space, go for it. Either way it's a good use for a non-op loco. With mine it's very hard to tell even when examining it up close that the track under it is plastic and it's quite literally just enough for it to sit on with maybe a foot or two at each end. The planning committee was made up of an extreme bunch of crab clawed penny pincher's. The N1 was a 2-10-2 wasn't it? The only 2-10-2 I have is a Canadian T-2a repainted black and gray for the MGRy Tourist line and renumbered 007.

Curt:  It would be kind of confusing right from the start..but when you read it left to right...all the strings run top to bottom as if they were on the guitar. What you could do is then read it as

e-|---------------------------|
b-|---------------------------|
g-|---------------------------|
d-|-3/5555555-777777-10-12-14-|
a-|-3/5555555-777777-10-12-14-|
E-|-1/3333333-555555--8-10-12-|
top strings not being played but the bottom three being played...anything with a bracket..ie: (B).
will be played as a bend..or some such....
Actually my favorites were the ones which used ~~~~~~~` as descriptive of bending and using
bars....

Did you upgrade to IE9? If so the forum won't recognize it. Look for an icon that looks like a torn piece of paper to the right of the address bar. Clicking that icon will make IE9 emulate IE8 and it will work.

Ah, Barry......  I think you mean Highest to Lowest, not Top to Bottom....  Last time I checked the high E string is still on the bottom of the guitar when being played in the normal position.  Of course today some so called arteests sometimes are standing on their head or swinging the axe around hitting things with it.......Laugh

Now for an 8th. grade general music lesson......  Some definitions:  Music may mean many different things to different people.  No problem, but if we take the most inclusive common denominator, the best definition I know of the word Music is.  "Music is organized sound".  In short it is sound controlled by the performance.  Now random sounds can be musical if THAT is what is intended by the creator.....  The word Noise is a nautical term actually meaning the sound of sailors being sea sick over the side of the boat.....  The word Nauseous comes from the same root word.  Music involves sound, it is an auditory art form (as opposed to a visual art).  The term Written Music is a misnomer.  A better term is music notation.  Over the past many thousands of years there has been countless forms of written musical notation.  None of them are right or wrong, they are what they are.  They all have the purpose of helping to pass the ability of making music from one to another and to be able to remember that which someone created.  Music in all cultures has been passed down through oral tradition for as long as humans have existed.

According to Grout's "History of Western Music", the ancient Greeks had a way of writing music down using mathematical ratios.  Pythagorus gave us the chromatic scale in use today by doing experiments with overtones.  This became the Circle of 5ths. in Music.  The earliest notation given to us from the Roman Church was nothing more than the printed words of a song where the monks had added some lines to show where the music went upward and downward.  THAT gradually developed into the standard Western Notation System in use today. I might add THAT system is still changing and developing today.  BTW, I wonder how many of you beside Tom W. and I know and can read Figured Bass? J. S. Bach and his contemporaries sure could!

The Tablature notation for guitar developed simply to allow guitarists to be able to learn quickly the best fingerings to play modern popular guitar licks.  As has been said a couple pages back it is almost impossible to learn the song unless you have heard it and basically have it memorized as it is missing a lot of info (which isn't need if you have access to a recording of it).  Western notation is also just a plan to learn the music.  Even though it is more complete in terms of the rhythm, meter, and such, there are still things almost impossible to notate.  During the time of Bach, there were many style practices such as the French, Nottes Inegall (sp?)(unequal notes), which was written as equal eighth notes, but played as a dotted eighth followed by a sixteenth note.  The rhythm was not, however the same as Jazz Swing (a ratio of 7/5)....  again it really can't be easily notated by any current system.  Then there was the "Scotch Snap" which was the opposite, but still written as even eighth notes.  I won't get into Hemiola...............

All of the above was just to say, it is the music performance that is important, not how it is notated.  Notation in all its forms are simply tools we use to make music....  (remember the definition please....)  Man I have been long winded!

Flo I need a refill here!  Thank you!

I have been w*rking on the details of the interior 0of the the engine house tonight.  i think it is finished.  What do you think?

Have a great night!
