***Ken, good luck with finding the right AC unit. Regardless of "claims", it has been our experience that the larger and more efficient(?), the more they cost to buy, to run, and they don't cool as well as some smaller, cheaper units.
Finally got the gutter back up on the back of the bird room. Much of it was torn down from the tornadic storm. Now just need some rain to wash it out good and start collecting fresh water for the birds.
Tuckered out tonight.

Evening All,
Been a fairly busy day today and this is my first computer time today. I started testing the track today for about a hour and the mains look like they are going to be OK, I still need to test some different locos. I ran a Genesis FP-7 and a P2K H10-44 today. I still need to test sidings, but the yard is working fine.
One problem I had was when I was using my DT402D throttle the loco would run for a while then stop (sound still on). When I looked at the throttle the speed had reset to 0 by itself. When I turned the speed knob the loco would go again until the throttle reset itself again. When I controlled the loco with the Zephyr xtra base station the problem did not occur. Any suggestions anyone?
I hope that everyone that is in pain get's some relief soon, and those in need have your prayers answered quickly.
Everybody have a good evening.

Ken: With the square footage you're trying to cool 8,000 isn't going to be enough. You stand a better chance with 10,000. I use a 12,000 in my 8x25 trailer and that keeps it 73 in here on a 100+ day.

I have to agree, KEN. The bigger the better in this case. It may feel cool to you as it is to small in size for the area, or it could be defective. I would return it and trade it in for a 12,000 BTU unit for the space you are trying to cool {if it will fit in your window}. Otherwise it will always feel "warmer" than you'd like, and won't do much in the way of cooling down the area you want to cool.
Best to buy it right once, than to be disappointed or have it do only a half an acceptable job.

Evenin' folks!
Janie, I'll have the stuffed Pork Chops, Baked Potato, and a trip to the salad bar tonight. A decaf to go along with THAT would also be good....
Todd, yep, nothing like some facts to slowdown the responses in a thread I always say.....
Ulrich, I hope the Docs can talk some sense into your parents. I know what you are going through having dealt with similar issues with my mom. I don't know how my dad managed to take care of her for so many years. He was a strong willed gentleman. On the other hand, some fixing up I am now doing with my property, I'm looking at what It will be like 20 years from now and knowing full well I will be in assisted living, nursing home, or just gone by then. Yesterday I asked the Dermatologist what I should do when i get a patch of psoriasis in an area on my back, I can't reach by myself.... She just grinned and shrugged her shoulders..... Oh, and by the way your modeling is superb! Write THAT article!
The Nut Case across the street was out for about an hour watering his large shrubs and trees. Second time today I think. I mean this guy is actually watering a 50' tree in his front yard........ We haven't had any rain in weeks here as well, Barry. So, Barry, is your community advising you water the trees or THAT you can't water the tress??? I think I will talk to all the neighbors and see if we can have a car washing party on Saturday. THAT ought to bring some rain....
I will have one of the 2 doors for the shed ready to reinstall tonight. Hope to get it in place and the other one removed to repair tomorrow between having the roofing contractor come over to give me prices on doing the shed roof and the appointment with the School Insurance clerk. Unfortunately my son can't come over to help as they are going somewhere for the weekend I think.
Also have about half the rafters on the Engine House and should create a smoke vent for it by this weekend. Only have a week until i show it off at the NMRA Picnic...... Have a lot to get done in a week.
Later!

Evening Folks!
Flo Beer please.
Far as the install, nothing but a pain in the caboose! First trying to get the darn thing out of the box I shredded my left hand finger tips on the coils. Bleed all over the POS and won't be playing Guitar for a while. Then I found I was missing a support bracket., well I will make one. Next problem, my old storm window frame, made it tilt into the house? So I had to take that apart to get it to tilt outside.
Next I fired it up with great expectation of cool air. Hum, this is a A/C unit right, not a $200.00 fan? I started pushing the buttons and for a second when I mover it to fan, I could hear the compressor for a second or so kick on, then it kicked off. Ran it for a while and got cold air for about 3 minutes and then warm air.
I had read on line about the temperature sensor being to close to the coil, so I pulled it away as far as I could. Air stays cool now, but not very cool. With the old unit in the garage the air feels cold from 6 feet away. This one the limit is about 1 foot.
Just went in and grabbed a Beer, it felt cool at the family room doorway! Grabbed the beer, hugged the wife, went back to the family room doorway, not very cool again. I have it on Cool Mode, Temperature is sat for 68 so it not that the compressor is cycling on and off because it is 68 degrees.
95% percent sure it will go back. This time I will have them test run the unit first. (just called Joe, he helped me) and said they could do that for me. If it did not start up blowing warm air I would be inclined to think I bought too small of a unit. More than likely I will up grade in sizes.
More than likely I will up grade as well. Guess buying a A/C unit is like buying model trains! After you spend $200.00 for a engine for the first time the $300.00 engine does not sound like a lot!
V 8 Vega This was the first time I tried to buy something on Craig and, well maybe it was just this seller.
Well, sorry I was so self centered tonight!
See you all later or Friday before I go to work. Time to watch Iron Man II.

I hate Rust
This has just not been my day. People I had sceduled for an intreveiw didn,t show up the I got a call from a mechanic thats had my truck for 4 weeks tells me that there is a short in the electical system and it could cost more to fix it than the truck is worth.

Good Afternoon..
Now Todd...there you go using all that there common sense stuff on these poor people!! Shame on you!!...actually you nailed it right there on that thread...
Ulrich: I'd say go for it!! You actually do some pretty good modeling from my end....good stuff!!
We got all the way up to 80F here...in the semi dull skies...we are now under watering trees advisory here...as we only got 4.7mm of rain all of July so far...
Chloe, I'll have a 48oz Porterhouse Steak with all the fixin's and a big ol' slice of Strawberry Rhubarb Pie as well as a tub of RBF please....I'll be at the corner booth with this lot...
Either they're busy out on Fort Polk today or there's thunderstorms to the north of us. There is a 50+% chance of storms today. We got 1/8" of rain this morning. I know, whoopee. But with as dry as it is any rain is welcome. Speaking of things wet, they had training at the fire station yesterday for those who haven't been on the business end of a 2.5" hose. First they did one man controlling a hose then two men controlling a hose. Much easier with two men. Pump pressure didn't exceed 125 pounds. One of the young guys, cocky as hell, said he could handle a 2.5" hose by himself all day. We were using small nozzles, the type we usually use at a fire. The assistant chief (my brother-in-law) got out one of the big nozzles (not the biggest we have, it takes two men to handle that monster on LOW pressure) and put it on in place of the small one and had the loud mouth man it. He picked it up and held onto it just as he had the small one. The pump operator started him off at 50 pounds. Not too bad. 75 pounds and he was running into trouble. 100 pounds and it was starting to push him back. He was having to dig in hard. 120 pounds knocked him on his butt. Time? Eight seconds, and he was flat worn out, and this was one of those big cornbread and beans bayou boys. Then one of our lieutenants showed him the proper way to handle that nozzle. He sat down on the hose , gripped the handles of the nozzle and the pumper operator let it rip with 220 pounds. The lieutenant controlled the nozzle easily and didn't turn a hair. Needless to say, the young swamp boy learned something. I had a good laugh out of it. I could afford to. I outranked everybody there with the exception of the assistant chief. Nobody got hurt with the exception of a bruised ego or two and everybody had fun. The spray mist in the air made it much cooler too which wasn't a bad thing.
Yesterday I said we had 11 days of +100. I was wrong it was 12 days. Today makes it 13 days. The temp at 3:42 is 104F and climbing. After Itook Mary Ann to dialysis I put out hay and was planning on working on the fence for a couple of hours, but the heat was already more then I could handle so no fence work. Right now in the office with the AC on full it's alittle wormish. I may head for the basement in a bit after I get some filling done.
You all take it easy. See you later.
Tom, Yikes! lucky neighbor. and yes the fire department guys are heroes. The ones in town here as well like trains. When we had the fire they covered the layout in tarps and nary a drop of water got on, nor did even a branch get broken on the trees. The construction crew, repairing the house, not so heroic as they waited until too late with a storm coming in and we ended up with 8" of rain in the house most of which got to the basement and drowned the layout. Insurance covered the damage to the rolling stock, walls and electrics, but probably not a penny on the dollar for scenery. I love the look of your scenery, is that the new area behind or am I imagining things?

Strong coffee in a SULTRY & SOUTHERN mug, please.
morning all from SunnyCal: Had a high of 81 yesterday, which is about 10 degrees cooler than normal for around here in July. Seems there's a system off the Oregon coast that is keeping our temperatures down. Fine by me, LOL!
Had a little excitement yesterday--was out in the garage working on the MR when I heard a yell and a crash. Came outside and found my next door neighbor Jon lying on his front lawn with a ladder next to him. He fell off the roof trying to adjust his satellite dish. I called 911 and got the fire department--they arrived in RECORD time, considering all the Budget Slashes around this state--with an ambulance not far behind. They checked him out and found that he'd probably fractured his ankle. Called his wife at work and told her to meet them at the hospital (Mercy San Juan is right around the corner from us, thank goodness!). The ambulance took off and I heard from behind me: "Holy cow, look at THIS!"
One of the firefighters was standing in front of my garage looking at the MR likea kid who had just discovered the Ultimate Toy. He looked at me: "Does it run?" "Yah, it does now," I chuckled.
So I had a little impromptu 7-minute 'Open House' for them (firefighters are my Ultimate Heroes, BTW) and ran a train. One of my Yellowstones, naturally. . They were Duly Impressed. In fact, one of them asked me if my locomotive wasn't running 'backwards'. Come to find out the only articulated he's ever seen is the Cab-Forward down at the Railroad Museum. They'd probably have stayed most of the afternoon if they weren't on duty. But it was kind of fun.
Jon's okay--on crutches. Seems that after all that it was a twist, not a fracture. I'm glad to hear that, especially after flying off of his roof. He's a GREAT neighbor!
Jeff/Ulrich: Believe me, I understand the frustration of caring (or trying to) for parents in their declining years, having done it with both of mine. It seems no matter how old one gets, one doesn't want to give up independence. It's hard-wired into our Genetic makeup. Now that I'm in my '70's, Tom, Jr. and I have discussed it--after I finally retire, he's got it in his head that he wants me to move to Vancouver so that he and Anna can 'keep an eye' on me. I told him flat-out that I was born and raised in California, and by God I plan on dying here, too. Which gets a raised eyebrow in return. We'll see. As Scarlett O'Hara is prone to saying: "I'll think about it TOMORROW!"
Besides, the Yuba River Sub would never fit into a rest home, LOL!
Stan: Looks like another great painting coming along--I really admire your work!
Well, I have to get back out to the garage--seems the House Track at Deer Creek decided to go 'dead' on me last night. Have to crawl under the layout, trace some wiring and find out how THAT happened. Ah, the hobby--like smoking a pipe: You fiddle around with the equipment FAR more than you actually use it, LOL!
Have a great day, everyone. Here's a parting shot of South Yuba Canyon and the Champion mine.

Hello again, refill on THAT boot of coffee please and thank-you...having a hard time getting anything done this morning.
TODD: Well (a whole lot of toads floating and swimming around now), based on what I saw in a CSI Des Moines episode which was based (copyright infringement for sure) on an episode of Wichita Law...and confirmed by the guy in town who spends his days picking cans up out of the ditch; you're spot-on!
I think you took the sawed-off shotgun to the hornets' nest...now we'll see what happens next!
ULRICH: Sounds to me, like I need to "get in touch with my roots" then!!! I'm not much of a wine fan, how's the barley water there???
*sigh* time to get busy, stuff to do for THAT Editor THAT ain't gonna write itself...

Good morning.
Stan ... Your painting of 744 looks great so far. You asked about the Burlington streamlined Hudson. It was number 4000 and officially named "Aeolus", but crews used the name "Big Alice the Goon". The shrowding was stainless steel to match Budd passenger cars. A second one was 4001, and I believe it was named "Zehyrus". The streamlining did not last very long. 4000 was re-numbered back to its original 3002 when the shrowding was removed in 1941. 3002 is preserved and is on display in LaCrosse, Wisconsin,
I think Duke should awaken to see Stan's 744, a Berkshire!
On the layout I am working on city streets. Hope to have operating streetcars eventually.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Morning, bucket of coffee please...and thank-you.
ULRICH: No! No problems here hearing about the un-savory nature of my ancestors! The clan, herd, tribe, pack; whatever you want to call 'em, originated in Großheubach. Yes, I had to cut and paste to get THAT funky German letter in there...otherwise it looks like this:Grossheubach. I would all but swear I had a Feuerwehr uniform patch from there...darned if I know where it is at the moment. A few years back, I found their website and hit the "contact us" link and wrote 'em a little e-mail. I even got a response back from them...in English, thankfully. Not sure if they sent me a patch or if I got one off of theBay... Hmmmmmm, might have to do some excavating around here later today. Hopefully it didn't get sold during one of my "sell anything not nailed down" situations...
I liked THAT: "No...I was here in 1941...." I think THAT is what the kids call a smack-down...gotta love it.
Sorry to hear of your parents' stubborness, I don't really know what else you can do. You can't force them to go to assisted living, but at the same time it must be heart-wrenching waiting for the inevitable phone call of bad news. Know you're in our thoughts.
TODD: What....what did you go and do now??? Did you go and get snarky in the CAT copyright/trademark issue??? I gotta go see what you've gone and done now...must've been something!
Well (even more toads floating happily in it this morning), busy day on tap here...I've got Regional Softball from last night to finish up for THAT Editor, some high screwl baseball to write, and the big Regional Final for my Clear Creek Amana Clippers tonight in Oxford. So far: one softball team dead, one going to State and one to be determined tonight.
Have a good, SAFE day everybody...
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have a couple eggs over easy and a side of bacon along with an order of sour dough toast please.... Oh, yes, a cup of your finest dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug.
Galaxy and Jeff sorry to hear about your bad night! Hope both of you get to feeling better quickly.
I will be back at w*rk on the shed for most of the day. Tomorrow I get to go over to the school office and talk with the benefits clerk about what happens to my insurance when I turn 65 in a few months. She will explain all the options to me....... OMG! I hate "options" from insurance companies..... There is always the options that will be good for the school, and the options that will be profitable for the Insurance company.... Don't usually find any that would be good for me somehow. Then i get to make an appointment with someone over at the SSI office in Geneva to explain my "options" for Medicare. Only good thing is it may slow down the threatening mail I have been from the insurance company and SSI about me turning 65 and needing to choose some "options"! I am blessed to have good coverage from the school system so far and I want to keep it THAT way! Our contract back when I was teaching provided for full health insurance for retires after being there so many years. Before someone tells me THAT was wrong, we gave up considerable money in bargaining over the years to keep it in the contract as long as we did. My sister (retired Art Teacher) is making a whole lot more in retirement than I and got a much larger paycheck than I did over the years. She has to pay a portion of her health insurance that amounts to the difference in what we bring in.......
Hope you all have a good day, stay cool, calm, and collected as they say!
Good Morning all! I have to be quick, I'm on my way to the dentist to have a new upper plate made the old one broke in two last week! I just wanted to post a quick look at my new NKP painting here it is:
It may look a little messy right now, but it'll be cleaned up in the next couple of days. NKP 744 had steel plates tacked to it's pilot during the winter months to keep the snow out. I didn't want to alter the picture I'm w**king with, so this is how it looked.
Anyway, I'll drop a line tonight when I have a little more time to talk.
Have a good day!

jeffrey-wimberly I know the feeling. You try to do what you feel is the right thing and get slapped in the face for it, or worse. Been there and done that. I let them figure their own path now.

Right you are, Jeff - that´s what I am also doing. I called their doc to report the situation and she will go to see them tomorrow. That´s really all I can do - and I still feel awkward. It just hurts to see them going down. We all know where their own path ends ...
I was asked to write up a feature on my mini-modules by the Japan Rail Modelers of Washington DC - I feel somewhat flattered. Don´t know yet whether to do this. I am not that great a modeler.
jeffrey-wimberly galaxy: I had a bad night.. Went to bed early, but woke up several times. MAJOR crampage going on. You and me both. My problem is from nerve damage. I've had to put up with it since the early 60's because of meningitis along with several other disorders so it was a fact of life for me and was something to be overcome. When my diabetes made itself known in the 80's the amount of nerve damage increased and has been spreading slowly since. It sometimes results in a violent case of the shakes as it did last night. Arm and leg muscles twitching in spasms, hands mostly useless as the muscles were cramped up, back cramped up. Neck muscles twitching. You think you had it bad. I feel much better today though I'm still twitching a little.
galaxy: I had a bad night.. Went to bed early, but woke up several times. MAJOR crampage going on.
Jeffrey- I said MOST of our readers were not in the agony I was in last night. I feel you are int eh category of those who, like me, had bad nights. The teo tumors removed from being pressing on and intertwined in my lumbar spine has caused me to be needing a cane to get around. The headache I have been sufering is either due to weather, tooth, infection , or all, I cannot wait till til the root canal is done. Maybe I shoulda jsut had them pull it instead. I DO realize you are in worse shape than I, but I canonly comisserate with you. I feel like a mac truck has rin over me and then backed up to runover me again to make sure the job was done. I also hope for both our sakes that OBAMA doesn't follow through his threat to NOT SEND OUT SS CHECKS on the 3rd of August if the Republicans don't give in. ANd I think the republicans are being rediculous, I'm soorry, new higher taxes on those who make $1,00,000.00 dollars is REDICULOUS! They can afford it. I'd like to see some of those millionaires live for a year on what tehy make in the first 3 paychecks they get in January for the whole year! OBAMA is right. His presendency WILL end in 2012 IF he cuts off SS checks and defaults on our debt payments BUt it will be the REpublicans who are causing all the trouble by nto allowing for increased taxes "on the rich" and for nto doing away wiht corporate taxes on companies like Exoon Mobile which made what $45BILLION in PROFITS last year with tax subsidies? AND the companies loosing there tax relief programs say "we will hire and expand our business if we keep the tax cuts"...BULL0-Malarky! IF that WAS THE case...WHY aREn't they hiring and creating NEW JoBS NOW?????????
over
Whew. I will still be suffering with Jeffrey in the corner booth.
Sir Madog We found the perfect place for my parents! It is a facility managed by the German Red Cross, a modern, clean place, designed by someone who understands the needs of senior citizen. They have a two bedroom apartment available, nicely furnished, in a quiet atmosphere. The whole thing looks like one of those Mediterranean holiday clubs. Just called my father to break the good news - guess, what his answer was? I am sorry to say this , but there is nothing left I can do for my parents. I cannot decide for them. All I can do is pray to the Lord that they will have some nice days left. I feel awkward.

Howmus: Your tales about your VW bugs reminded me of my first car back in 1961. It was a 1958 VW. It served me well for a few years until I fell in love with a sports car (1964 Datsun 1500 Fairlady--think MGB clone). That VW would go anywhere and not get stuck so long as I didn't stop. I drove it through snow so deep that I was the only vehicle moving on the street. I think it had something to do with how the wheels slanted inwards when the weight was taken off them by the bottom of the car sliding along on the snow. I found out that it floated too when I drove through a flooded underpass. It had its drawbacks--not much heat in the winter and it didn't have a gas gauge. Many times I had to reach up with my foot for the gas transfer lever in a hurry when the main tank ran dry. I've got fond memories of that car. Well, I think everyone has fond memories of their first car. The first one is always a special one.

Morning Folks!
Flo, how about some Cherry Pie this morning and a glass of milk.
Galaxy Sorry to hear you are feeling bad again. I am guessing it is the tooth still giving you problems.
I hope to get today's running around done early. Have to go to the grocery store, Shop and Save has it $10.00 off today. You buy $50.00 in grocery's and they take $10.00 off so it is only $40.00. Then I got to make up my mind about what A/C to buy. I did not hear back from the person that had the one listed on Graig's list so it looks like I will be buying a new unit.
Train Front Hope to make it back to K-10 Model Trains again this Thursday. Last Thursday I went over to get the motors tested. Jim (guy that does repairs) was not there but Ken (the owner) let me test the motors. Problem is I have never used a meter like K-10 has and while we got a reading we did not know what line of the meter to read. All so want to pick up some more PK 2000 33 inch wheel sets.
Got another fright car on line last night, this one is a 40 footer Bachmann The Rock box car. Replaced the wheels sets and remounted the Kadee couplers. Found my Dull Coat (had not used for going on 3 years) and gave it a coat, no longer looks nearly as toy like. Next car up will be a Like Like ATSF 40 foot box car. This thing has not been used for 5 plus years, still has it horn hooks.
Well that is it for me
See you all later. Ken
