Good Morning!! Coffee and the huge-o-breakfast please. Thanks. I’ll need to eat big as this may be my last post, hence my last meal, after getting run out of Dodge. I only wish it would have been supper time then I could say it was my... never mind.  Then the site will get shut down and then that will lead to a huuuuuge gap in the MRRing community and confusion will run rampant and …..that will be the end of Mrring. Sorry guys. I had no idea one little sarcastic post on Copyrights would actually end up with the draining of the oceans and now the Humpbacked whale is…(sniff)…gone. Bright side is they'll probably discover a few new species and a few they thought were extinct. Down side is, then they really will be dead.

Partly sunny, with a high near 84. (sssshhhhh! Don’t tell Paul)

Ulrich- That’s kinda what I thought you might have meant. Funny when we grow up our parents teach us to be patient. Then when they grow up, they become impatient and we are now preaching to them what they once preached to us.

Welp, got a few things to do today before w**k.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good morning everybody. The wife and I decided to take one of our little day trips yesterday. So following breakfast at our usual restaurant, we drove up to Conneaut, Ohio to do some railfanning on the CSX main line. We sat behind the railroad museum for 3 hours and caught 7 trains. We heard 3 Norfolk Southern trains that run on trackage about 2 blocks down. Before we left for home, we did a tour around the museum and then had a burger at McDonalds. Things must be starting to slip by me in my old age, as there was quite a lot of reconsruction in both directions on I79. Meaning miles of one lane. Probably added 30 or 40 minutes each leg. I just don't remember seeing about this in the news. But we weren't in a hurry, so no big deal.

By the way, if your in the area, stop by the museum. I think you'll enjoy it and I'm sure they can use your support. I wish we lived closer as I would enjoy volunteering my services. Hey, somebody has to cut the grass and pick up trash.

Hoping you all have a good day. Tom

Good Morning All,

63F this morning and sunny - just perfect weather after we had a brief rain and front come through last night. Dropped the Kenworth off for service this morning so I'm playing catchup a bit.

Jeff - I'm glad your mom is doing better, but I appreciate the agita with them going off just after the release from hospital. Timing could have been better don't you think?

Ulrich - the only thing you can do is continue to look for a placing and continue to quietly insist your parents move to the place you find. Your father will never forgive himself if something preventable happens to your mother because she wasn't where assistance was readily available. I went through the same thing with my mom after her sister developed Alzheimers. My mom was convinced she could look after her sister adequately and as the disease progresses, it just becomes more and more impossible. One can't stay up 24/7 and all it takes is one time where the person you're looking after decides to go for a stroll while you're asleep and....... An assisted living facility makes the most sense and once they see one perhaps they'll change their minds. My aunt lived out her days in one in Canada and we all were better off for it.

Curt and Paul (and Flip too)- hope you get some relief from the heat. I was stationed in both Pensacola and Homestead and can still remember just melting in the heat.

Gotta run - stuff needs doing.  CUL, J.R.

Also had a MAJOR Charlie Horse cramp in my shin last night that MOH had to massage out for me. I got up and took leg ramp pils wiht quinine in them them to help.

Good Morning Folks,

what have I started? Did not mean to heart anybody´s feelings with my comments on Bavarians - they are just our German rednecks Smile, Wink & Grin. A little story best describes the character of these people. The former governor of the "Free Sate of Bavaria" (who once ran for Chancellor, but failed) was invited to visit the Soviet Union in 1986. Upon his arrival, he was asked by Mr. Gorbachev, if this were his first visit to the Soviet Union and Moscow. His answer? "No, I was here before, in 1941, but only made it to Stalingrad"

Tom - I made it mistake. The little narrow gauge line is still in service. The one which was closed down in the late 1950´s was actually not far away. The line to Zell am See has been revamped and is now a modern railroad on narrow rails, but not meter gauge - the gauge is 760 mm.

You´ll find some pictures here

Chris - your last name can be predominantly found in the area south of Frankfurt in the town of Miltenberg. Though a part of the "Free State of Bavaria", this town is populated by Frankonians, who have a different dialect and are mainly members of the Lutheran Church, whereas "true" Bavarians are mainly of Roman-Catholic belief. The state of Bavaria has 7 provinces, Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria, Suebia, Upper Palatinate, Upper Frankonia, Lower Frankonia and Middle Frankonia. When I talk about Bavarians, it´s the folks from Upper and Lower Bavaria I mean.

Germany with its different ethnic groups is quite a complex nation, which is difficult to understand. I am German by passport, Prussian by heart, and from Hamburg by choice.

Todd - fortunately, my Mom is not (yet) back into the hospital. She is actually feeling a little better. We know that this will not last very long as she suffers from dementia. My parents seem to have given up the idea of moving into assisted living, which makes me a little mad at them. Both expect me to jump up and race to them at their call. It is not 230 miles, as in Jeff´s case, but it is 110 miles ...

That´s all for now - have a good one!

Bowl of kettle corn, please.

Worked on patching holes in the repaired section of tin roof (over the hay). Still more tin to put up and lots to patch yet. At least it's progress.

Hope y'all are doing well.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf for me please.

Looks like the place has been busy today.  I have as well.......  Went to the dermatologist appt., she looked at my face and pronounced THAT I was on the wrong kind of ointment for it and said the stuff i was using (THAT she prescribed) is making it worse not better because what is on my face isn't psoriasis but rather Rosacea.......  Everything else (the psoriasis) has been responding well to the regimen she put me on 3 months ago.  So I left with a large bag of samples, a hand full of prescription renewals and an appointment in another 3 months.  Took a couple prescripts down to the drug store and then came home.  Changed clothes, went grocery shopping and then did some more painting and assembling on the doors to the shed.  By the weekend I hope to have THAT finished so I can turn my attention to more important things like the Model railroad!

Jeffrey, glad your mom is better and will be coming home tomorrow!

Galaxy...  Your talking about the air conditioners for your mobile home brought back memories from my first home after I married the most beautiful girl around (I thought so anyway).  We lived in an ancient 8' x 36' Trailer we bought for $1500 and had moved to a lot we got across the road from my Fathers Farmhouse on the farm.  The rent was perfect (free as long as I stayed in college).  This monstrosity had 2" walls at best.  The furnace had been upgraded to a more modern oil burner from the "smudge pot" type they put in them years ago.  It was about 3 times bigger than it needed and half the heat just blew out under the trailer during the winter as it had been put in wrong.  Anyway, My first car was a 1960 VW with 96,000 miles on it my father gave us for a wedding present.  Turns out I knew the guy who sold it to my Dad as we both sang in the church choir at St. Lukes in Rochester.  At 6 years of age there was a bit of rust on the car and it had the rear bumper just fall off....  On my way out to student teach one morning, a guy rammed me from behind at 4 miles an hour scratching his car and totaling my VW.  The insurance company said it was worth $100 for scrap.  THAT would have left us with, no car, and no $$$ to get another one, and no way for my wife to get to w*rk and me to get to college...  The Insurance adjuster finally offered us $500 and we got to keep the totaled VW.  It cost me $20 to get the bug up and running and back on the road for another 10,000 miles (total of 126,000 miles original everything except the tail lights and a generator belt).  After we got the check, we finally found a 1956 VW Bug that lasted until after my first year teaching to die (with 230,000 miles on it).  THAT cost us $275 (and lasted almost 34,000 miles after we bought it) leaving us with about $225 in the bank from the accident.  We decided to buy an Air Conditioner for the trailer.......

I asked a lot of questions and was assured a 6,000BTU model would be overkill in such a tiny little trailer, so on a Saturday afternoon we brought home a brand new 6,000 BTU air conditioner and I spent the rest of the evening rebuilding a window in the kitchen/living room/dining room area.  Plugged it in and it ran.... Cold air was coming out of it and we were very happy!  The next morning I had to leave to go to my church job in Pittsford, NY picking up my Mother who was also a paid section leader in the choir.  I sweltered at church and suffered through what I think was the longest sermon Father White (yep THAT was his name) had ever preached and couldn't wait to get back home into the air conditioning.  We pulled in the driveway and I noticed all the windows were open again in the trailer.....  My wife was not a happy camper...  She turned of the 6,000BTU unit an hour after we left and when the trailer got to 85° with the windows shut and the air conditioner going at full speed.....  She said something like, "A d@%%ed Ice Cube in a %&^^$ Oven!!!  (She was a plumbers daughter.....)

OK I've talked long enough...

Later!

Jeff- My thoughts and prayers are with you and your Mother.

Ulrich- I didn't understand what you meant by see above? Is your Mother back in the hospital? Have they changed their minds about assisted living?

EDIT: I took long enough looking for what you call something after I started this post, that I missed the update on your Mother Jeff. That is good news. Never did find what I was looking for either. Hence the lack of a suggestion.

Found out earlier this evening just as I was going to leave to go to the fire dept that my mother has improved and will be released tomorrow morning. My father will be bringing her home tomorrow. All that trouble to get a transport platform for a power chair.

Ulrich:

Ah, Zell-am-Zee.  What a great photograph.  I recognized the hotel I stayed in while I was there, and the church in which our choir performed.   Brought back some wonderful memories.

Is the little metre-gauge railway still in operation?  I have a photograph of me standing at one of the road crossings  somewhere around here, I'll have to dredge it up.   It was pretty charming--while I was there, some standard-gauge freight waggons were being hoisted up on narrow-gauge trucks--evidently to be taken up the line to the terminal up the valley.  I didn't have time to follow the line from Zell-am-Zee, as we were busy with rehearsals.  But I certainly fell in love with my Austrian 'home town.'  I'm still planning on making a return trip soon.

Thanks again for posting  the photos.

Evening All,

Still inferno land hot hereWink I believe the heat index was 105 F today. I am off tomorrow so I have to do my laundry, cleaning chores, take my Mom and Dad out to lunch, do my last tortoise test, and cook dinner, so a pretty full day.

Jeff- I really hope things start to go better with you and your Mother's medical problems. Don't forget to take care of yourself.

Tom- Very nice layout photo. I am really looking forward to starting on scenery.

L&N Time- I feel your frustration. This last weekend I read on another forum (not MRR) about the Walther's 130 ft TT. There was about 15 postings, 1- pro, 1- neutral, and 13 negative. I really want to do like you are planning but now I am thinking seriously about using a Wye with separate loco parking. I really don't know what I am going to decide to do.

Ulrich- There is no doubt that there are areas in Germany that are gorgeous.

Everybody have a good night and prayers for those in need.

 Evening Dinners.

Flo, I take a Beer please.

A/C Front Been snooping around on Crag's list for a used A/C unit, not that I will buy just any A/C unit. Must be a newer unit that I can look up on line. Did find one that is promising, it is a 10,000 LG unit that Home Depot still sales for $250.00. Seller wants $150.00 and I E-mailed them and hope to hear back from them today.

Lee One of the problems I know my central A/C unit has is the duct work. God, I guess it was 10 plus years ago I was told there where some rust holes in what was called a Drip Pan under the furnaces. Did not have the money to have it fixed then.

Parts that really sucks, I know how to work sheet metal and have the tools. Problem you ask? I think I am to fat to get through the trap door to the craw spaces!

Guess I am going to have to try because it is not going to get any better.

Well Sue just came out (she seldom gives me good news) and told me that the little break we got from the heat has came to a end. Will hit 101 degrees Monday and that is not the heat index. Guess my hand is going to be forced Thursday.

Ulrich Boy that is a great picture! I love mountains and snow, why I stayed in the flat Midwest is beyond me.

I will drop by later, think I am going to run some trains.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, tall lemonade, hold the JEFFERY "enhancements." Thank-you...

So, ULRICH, are you telling me THAT my ancestors come from a land of generally disagreeable people??? A land of rude, crude, socially unacceptable, ill-tempered types?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

'Splains a lot!Mischief

Can't wait to see THAT shelving for the N-sane scale modules!!

Well (couple of toads happily floating in it), tonight I find out if two of my three varsity high school girls' softball teams will be going to Fort Dodge next Tuesday for the State Tournament or not. Solon is playing Mt. Vernon (home to our Big Boss) and Iowa City West is facing Des Moines Lincoln. My Clear Creek Amana Clippers are two days behind, finally getting to their Regional Semifinal game against Vinton-Shellsburg tonight with the Regional Final tomorrow night against Pella.

I covered West's Semifinal Monday evening, and have THAT game written-up with space for a summary of tonight's game. Win or lose, I've got it to where it'll (hopefully) blend right in seamlessly. We'll see if the new proofreader and THAT Editor agree!

As it is, I'm taking a bit of a gamble. Win or lose tonight, I've got West photos. Clear Creek Amana "should" win tonight and make it to tomorrow. My original plan was to cover West Monday and CCA Wednesday. But, IF the Vikettes of Vinton-Shellsburg beat my Clippers... I may have some 'splainin' to do. Then again, IF the un-thinkable (CCA losing) happens...I can cover my butt by shooting some Boys' Sub-State Baseball Friday evening.

Always, always, ALWAYS have a "Plan B." Smile, Wink & Grin

I'll have a seat at the RC, see who stops in...

Zell am See - nice and scenic place. They used to have a little narrow gauge line down there, which eventually became a victim of a road building frenzy.

Ulrich:

Definitely agree with you about Vienna--it's actually like it's own little country INSIDE another country!   The Austrian side of my family is from the Salzburg Province--a little town in the Alps called Zell-am-Zee (kind of like Lake Tahoe here in Northern California, come to think of it).   When I was in Austria, I noticed the difference between Salzburg and Vienna--like night and day, almost.   Salzburg is charming and a little 'provincial', (and let's not mention "The Sound of Music"--gag!) while Vienna is just the opposite--multi-cultural and VERY Cosmopolitan.  I love both, actually,  but for a musician like myself, Vienna is like dying and immediately going to Heaven, LOL!

Yep, and I'm not even going to THINK about making it. I just called my father to get an update on the situation. He hasn't heard anything from the hospital since she was admitted yesterday. He's expecting a call today but so far nothing. They probably figure he has nothing better to do than sitting around waiting on them.

Ken, I would do two 10K BTU or look into a central air unit.  If you look into the CenAir thing find a contractor not associated with a chain company.  Often the deals are better with the smaller companies and they are more willing to retro fit your current equipment over replacing the entire system.

Tom - Bavaria is a beautiful country, just like a fairy tale wonderland. Bavarians are rough and hearty folks, with a touch of arrogance. For over 100 years, they have been living of the contributions coming from Prussia - King Ludwig 2nd was dead broke. All his beautiful castles had been paid for by the Prussian tax payer. Up until the 1980´s, Bavaria received heavy subsidies from our Federal Government.

Basically, the like/dislike for Bavaria and Bavarians has historical reasons, as described earlier. One has to know that Germany has never been that one nation, even under the rule of that certain Austrian.

Austria is a different story - Vienna is geographically located in Austria, but has a much more multicultural background. There is some kind of a champagne atmosphere in the air, whereas the rest of that country is going for beer and schnaps. I like Vienna very much and have spend a lot of time in this wonderful city. When I talk about Austrians, I exclude the people in Vienna Laugh

I also like the Bavarian countryside, but would not want to live there. Hamburg is my place, it is a rich city, with open minded people. No wonder, it´s been Germany´s gate to the world for many centuries.
