Yawn!

It is 1.30 am and again, a sleepless night. I really got trapped by those panic attacks, which force me to stay home, not being able to set a foot outside the door without my heart rate sky-rocketing.

Janie, just a mug of hot & sweet chocolate, please, but hold the rum!

Robby - a belated happy anniversary! Petra and I had our 27th anniversary this year, and my parents are going for their 60th coming year!

Ken - aren´t you a lucky one!

As the year´s ending rapidly, time to think of those people, who have to spend the New Year´s Eve far away from their loved ones.

Here is to our boys and girls in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Bosnia, Darfur and off the coast of Somalia & Lebanon.

Ken: Good to hear about the job possibility.

Had some things to do this morning, none of them related to the layout then my father came by and picked me up to go with him to a boat repair place out near Toledo Bend on the other side of Toro. We had to take some parts out there and check on the progress of his boat as well. It's a 1971 Lone Star 16' V-bottom double hull ski boat. Right now it's basically just a hull with the deck and control station. It originally had an Evinrude 75 on it but that locked up long ago from lack of use. He's having an Evinrude 90 rebuilt for it. The mechanic working on it was preparing to set the timing on it when we got there. The boat still needs gas tanks, steering cables, electrical work, seats, motor control, etc, etc, etc. It was after 2 pm when we got back so we heated the last of the General Sherman's stew my mother had cooked up earlier in the week. Good stuff but man the tomatoes are working on me. I like them but they don't like me. I used to be able to eat them if they were cooked but not any more. My reaction to them has gotten worse in recent months and it's looking like I'll have to put them on my do-not-eat list right up there with bananas, cherries and avocados. I finally got home around 4 pm. Just finished getting a Life-Like coal tipple boxed up for a friend of mine and it looks like that will be the last thing I'll be doing today.

Hey guys

Been kind of busy doing all sorts of small jobs. Right now I'm monkeying with a computer chip writer for my car. I haven't really done much to the car that would justify it (only exhaust as the power adders) but every little bit helps. Still need to buy a firewall clutch adjuster.

I have played with trains a little bit. Took out the MKT hopper and managed to fix it up. I tried an experiment with a silver sharpie by hitting the roofwalk with it and hoping to get the raised portions to be silver. The sharpie flowed a bit too much for it.

Ken, Good to hear on that one.

Robby, Happy Anniversery.

Ray, Your workshop pieces are very nice.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evenin' folks!

Flo, I'll just have a cup of hot cocoa for the moment.  I'll be in the back warming up by the stove.

Hey, temperature around these parts got all the way up to 38°F today/.  First time it has been above freezing outside in 16 days!  "We're havin' a Heat Wave.....  Tropical Heat Wave....."

Ken, nice to hear good news from you!  Hope you have a great interview, get the job, and love it!  You are in my prayers!

J. R., check your conversations.......

I have spent most of the day finishing up some year end obligations, running errands, and in general not getting a whole lot done.  A couple of us are w*rkig on a mid January NMRA Meet which is a combined meet between two neighboring divisions here in Central NY.  This should turn out to be great as it is just not coming together......  Either THAT or we will finally get everything done for it and there will be one of those major January, ah, you know, events involving major amounts of white, cold stuff and it will get canceled........

Thinking about disappearing onto the lwoer extremities of my house (where the layout is) for a couple hours.....

Later!

Evening all.

Sorry I haven't been in- I've been busy. I actually got some more modeling done, then there was hockey, and I stayed at a friends house last night.

I have to leave for a game in less than an hour, so I can't stay and talk. I'll try and make it in tonight when I get home.

Catch ya later!

Flo, Beer is on me tonight! Big Smile

Talk about the Luck of the Irish!

Today I sat down and sent out some resume, first time scenes I lost my new job last Wednesday. With New Year's coming did not think I would get any action on them this year. Low and behold the first ad I found was running a Mattress Store. I can do that, did it for 4 years. Fired off the E mail and went on.

45 minutes later the phone rang, guess who?Big Smile Yep Matters Solutions, now I think my resume looks pretty good, but 45 minutes? Whistling I have a interview Friday at 10:00 AM. Yes

Now here is the best part! The new store they are opening is in EDWARDSVILLE IL, the same town I was going to be working in. Again only a 6 mile drive!

The owner knows I worked for Mattress Giant (whole reason they called) and asked if I knew Joe Todd, and I said yes. Asked what Joe would say about me? As luck would have it Joe is on my personal references list all ready!

Then I had a panic attack, none of my dress pants where pressed! Dead Hit the inter net and found a dry cleaner that does in store pressing. I had 35 minutes to get there, made it and have freshly pressed pants ready to go!

While I still like to get out of sales, I rather sell mattress than furniture . Plus with it being still only 6 miles from the house it will make the longer hours more easier to live with. I am expecting something in the 50 hour range.

Lee I sent you the E Mail and PM as well. looking forward to speaking with you.

Todd Here is a link to the Tab site.

Maybe you will understand why I am a little confused. Plus I cannot play the guitar out here in the garage, no room behind the desk.

 See you all later!

 Lucky Ken

Hey guys, snow's melting fast in Illinois.

Just placed an order from Walthers of some parts I need for modifying a model I have of Main Street Station from Disney. Nice station and it has all the provisions for an interior, but I need to patch some holes and fill in some windows. Lost a few of the frames over time. Covered up some of the tops of the towers with Spackle and will paint them tomorrow or during New Years eve. Aw well, not much I can do until I get that order. Hopefully it gets delivered to the door instead of getting THROWN up the driveway by the mail woman. How hard is it to drive up to a house and set a package somewhere where people can see it? Good Morning from Winterpeg!

It is a rather frosty day here with a windchill of -33C but it is sunny and of course it is a dry cold.

Robby, yes I would certainly agree with Galaxy, take your wife, Jessica isn't it?, out for a nice meal. Has always worked for me and we are headed for year #29. Oh, and shiny, sparkly things are also good but if your budget doesn't allow, flowers are always well recieved, especially roses.

Well we are off for lunch out with friends shortly, so will say have a good day everyone.

Mornin' everyone!  (It is still morning I think here in the Finger Lakes.)  (Well it was when I started this.....)

Zoe, couple eggs scrambled, side order of bacon, and some of that wonderful sourdough toast you have to go along a a cup of your best dark roast coffee.

Robby, congrats on the anniversary.  Oh, and ignore Barry.....  Go for the record instead....WhistlingWink

Der, I love the paperweight!  Thanks for the photo of the old electric motor it has been added to my collection ideas for later....  My Father was somewhat of an innovator on the farm.  He was always doing things that everyone else said couldn't be done.  We were the first farm in the North East to have a Milking Parlor.  My dad had an old wood silo packed up and moved by a huge crane from one side of the barn to the other.  Close to 200 farmers showed up to see what they thought was going to be the disaster of the century at the Howard Farm.....  They left disappointed as it was moved, bolted in place, and everything packed up without incident.  My dad got tired of the old silage blower clogging up from time to time, so at an auction he was at, he bid on and got a 70' farm elevator hand made by an inventor (the guy invented the silo unloader).  It weighed in at over 10 tons and was almost perfectly counterbalanced with a huge slab of concrete.  OK, all that was just to tell you that the elevator was only missing an electric motor large enough to handle the size of the monster while set up against the silo which was 57' tall.....  (We had more than one car drive into the ditch in the road out front eyeballing this thing.  I'll leave the story of how my dad got this thing from the other side of Rochester to our farm (about 80 miles) for another time.  He managed to find a 5 Hp industrial motor from the late 1920's to do the job.  It did!  This sucker weighed over 300lbs.  We moved it in place using the bucket loader on the tractor. The 2 of us couldn't budge it by hand.

OK, I seem to have written a book....

Yesterday I tackled The Closet!  You know the one by the bathroom that has all the towels, sheets, cleaning supplies, old light bulbs, and stuff like THAT.  Fibber McGee had one of them......  Amazing what I found (hasn't been cleaned in 20 years or so...) Lots of old polish and cleaning stuff bought at stores that went out of business, oh, 25 years ago.  Threadbare towels I was saving for some reason, and old sheets no longer of use to anyone....  The small dumpster from the trash company is filled.  just got emptied last Tuesday.....

Oh, Todd, I think a couple glasses of wine works the same magic.........

Later!

Morning all!  Its a bright, sunny day outside, with the expected high to be around 58 with increasing cloud coverage and a chance of rain later.  That's all right with me, I don't mind it a bit, although I do have to go to w*rk later and if its raining, it means one thing.  Wiper blade sales!  Oh what people don't realize until they try to use their windshield wipers in the rain.....  Ok, ok, rant over.

Flo, I'll have biscuits and gravy with a side of sausage and a glass of milk.

Rob Congrats on the anniversary, I 2nd exactly what Galaxy and Barry said!  I'm currently working on the anniversary of year 6 with Amy and I asked her last night what she wanted to do this year (Feb 12th).  She told me to surprise her....now gee, how can I do that?  She doesn't do blindfolds too well, so I can't blindfold her and take her off somewhere spectacular....so hmmmm.

Nothing much happening this morning, marking items off the HD list, which is a good thing since we're got the weekend free and clear (off from w*rk this weekend)  Might get a chance to go hunting as I've not been in two weeks now...or might just spend some quality time with family.

Welp, breakfast is here, so I guess I'll go hop in a window booth and watch the choo-choos.

Oh yeah, on the upcoming move.  How about we move down here to Alabama, the weather is somewhat more temperate than other places we've been so far......just a suggestion.

Good Morning All!

Not much to report from the land of Buckeyes other then we have a cold rain..If the temperature drops then that will become freezing rain.Oddly it suppose to be in the 40s Friday and Saturday then back to the high 20s Sunday..Only Ohio's weather can do that.

Modeling wise nothing of importance was done over the last 2 days.Plans for today calls for moving a unused chest of drawers to another room and that will open up a 8' long area so,I could go with a 2x8' ISL which will give me room for another industry or scenery like a trailer drop lot..My son and grandson will be over to move it-better he could take that fool thing home.

I shall have a cup and look over the forum.

Have a good'un! Thumbs Up

Good afternoon Diners. Off to the City this afternoon to catch a movie (the King's Speech ) and get some Indian cuisine at or fav. Restaurant - also a trip to the LHS to spend a gift certificate Kris gave me - decoder for the LL GP38-2 seems to be in order. (TCS M4 will eat all of that - but I've been waiting a while to get the funds.

Duke:

John   Try putting some masking tape down, mark for the hole, and then drill.  The tape might stop the drill bit from wandering.
...Thanks! Sure beats the heck out of getting a drill press! I can turn that strip around and start over.Thumbs Up

Barry: Glad your friend is doing OK Angel

Today will be spent doing some work on a couple of buildings that I'm building...heeheehee...love the english language....
...yep, there's jusy so many words to tdo the same thing - but with a slight twist each time, even if it is just to keep THAT editor happy about avoiding repletion in the same sentence, or even paragraph. Like "edifices which I'm constructing", or even "dwellings I'm developing"...LOL

Ray: Those machines are wonderful!  JR's remark about scanning got me remembering. The museum has photos of some equipment from the ground-wood pulp mill in Sheet Harbour. It opened in 1923, and the same motors were used throughout it's working life (1971) to drive the grinders.  They were not small, and surprise, surprise were more or less pancake type! You can see the electrical panels too, and the scale can be had from the stairs. Two of these, mounted either side of each grinder took 24 inch long log sections down to a pulp against granite/carborundum  grinding wheels - lots of mass and inertia!  Well able to power you belt drives - OMD would have loved them!Big Smile

Tood:

Also, 2 beers a day is good for men . More than two kinda offsets the good, but two is good for you. Doctors orders.
...my FIL was under doc's orders for a Guiness a day...never heard him complain about THAT!Beer

Good Morning! Coffee please. Thanks.

Happy Anniversary Robby! Cake

A chance of drizzle. Cloudy, with a high near 47. Breezy, with a south southeast wind between 18 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.

Warmer today, most snow is gone. I must go to Mom apt today to pay the rent and get her mail.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that all goes as planned because the bank did call and said our closing is to be held on the 7th of Jan. Looks like the refi is going through at least so far. The last high interest payment goes in today. Still unsure until the papers are signed and the payment book is recieved. NO ONE has EVER come to me and said, "say, why don't we rework this so you don't have to pay me as much back. Save you some serious cash and I won't make neeeeear as much. How's that sound buddy? Pal?"

Ken- Tab pretty much reads left to right. Yup. If the numbers are directly under each other, the strings are pressed at the same time as with a chord, if they aren’t they are pressed in the order you read them left to right. Like I said it’s the timing that is the issue. Unless there is a way to tell the difference between a quarter, whole, or half note, rests etc. If there is, It’s new to me so I guess then I’d have to restate my abilities on reading tab. I’ll wait to see what you mean.

J.R.- I saw on the television show "The Doctors" ( Mom's here so I get introduced to the important shows that I should watch because they are full of good imformation.) They say that using......um..., certain languageWhistling while enduring pain or stressful situations actually is good for you. I assume you aleviated some stress after realizing the extension cord was entering the snow blower (that particular moment would be prime for a single blast)  and again while removing the cord? (that would be usefull to have an entire list. ) Doctors orders.

Also, 2 beers a day is good for menYes. More than two kinda offsets the good, but two is good for you. Doctors orders.

Best get headin out if I want ANY chance of getting into the train room before w*rk tonight.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Good morning. It's 59° and decidedly wet! It rained nearly all night. The high will be 72° with a 50% chance of rain.

No plans today. I'll get some layout work done IF there's time for it. Seems like any time I make plans for it everybody shows up wanting something or needs me to go do something. This morning I took a step toward making my parents little video camera easier for them to use. It's one of those little things that has to be plugged into a USB port to recharge and naturally there was no AC recharger supplied with it. This morning I ordered an AC wall wart that was made for recharging such devices. Just plug in the wall wart then plug the devices USB cable into it. My parents know very little about computers and even lees about USB ports or where to find them. Their computer has six of them, all on the back. The charger I ordered is a Cables Unlimited Zip-Linq AC wall plug to 5V USB adapter. It's made to recharge MP3 players, cell phones, etc and works with any type USB cable. Best of all it cost only $10.

Good Morning All,

a toasty 12F out this morning but we have - sunshine. Sunshine makes it a lot better! Quick tip - If you use an extension cord to the preheater on your diesel truck make sure you unearth it before you use the snow blower. Tip 2 - extension cords are hard to untangle fron snow blower blades. A regular to go please Zoe.

Hoping to get enough done early enough to get to HD for some stuff for the basement. Talked #2 son out of driving to and from Oregon over winter break. At least not in a Ford Focus on a lark. Ah to be immortal youth again.

Ray - we're trying to scan the pics (I have 4 in all) of my Grandfathers w..k places. A couple show the pulleys shafts and belts in the ceiling, the others show the equipment placements. I can E-mail them to you if we are successful scanning them. They are all circa 1920's - 30's from what i can tell

Back out to it in the shop.  CUL, J.R.

Top of the morning to you.

Today is our four year anniversary  , so who knows whats planned.   Its icing right now, and if we do go somewhere it will be much later.

Worked on the layout some yesterday and I have to get the track cleaned, and a few other things,  I'm also debating to go to a LHS today.   The thing with that is........why spend the money now, when I have school in a week.  I just won't have time for the layout.   At least for a month.

Other than that, the plan is based around "mother nature".

 Have a good morning.

Good Morning from a warm and overcast Maryville IL!

Flo, Frosted Flakes and Coffee Please. I feel Great!

Looks like the snow is pretty much gone, it is up to 45 so far. Been hearing ices sheets breaking lose and sliding off the roof. I miss the snow, and it is now replaced with a sea of Mud, I don't like Mud!

Todd I will try to post some Tap and maybe yo can walk me through it. Like I said, I know which strings and which fret to use, but not the order.

Ray Sorry to hear about Rosie. It a shame it was her time after only 6 years and only 3 good years at that.

Sawyer Love how the hills are coming along. I had a section I was going to do like that but with things up in the air with the house and or new layout I stopped working on the bench.

On the House. I do hope to keep it, but sometimes I think i would be better off with out it. With the payment being back up to $900.00 plus around $600.00 for utility's I will need to be making $700.00 a week again. Funny, 4 years ago I would have said I could not make it on $700.00 a week. Now it sounds like a lot of money?

Ulrich Well it sure looks like you live in a good neighbor from the photos you posted. Far as not being able to afford the lumber, you could do what I did when I got started. I went scrapping and was amazed at the lumber I got hold of. I still have quite a bit under the layout. Latter when I had money, I started buying new lumber.

If you want the train stuff let us know. I will more than likely never replaces the motor in the Stewart F-3. They want $45.00 for just the motor. Sounds like it has a bad motor bearing, if oiled ever 4 or 5 hours it stay quite. Then it starts making a racket again. It stalled in a tunnel when it ate a decoder and I could not see it was not moving.

Well I am out of things to say, time to hit the net looking for another job.

Lee you will be getting a E Mail from me latter today.

Good Morning,

Ray, where did you get those belt drive shop tools?

Ulrich, I would visit a hobby store or search the internet for a local MRR club.  I’ll bet there is one out there in a church or apartment basement comprised of people with no layout space or living on limited funds.  There are a few out here that take volunteer efforts or cash for annual dues.  There is a club to the east of me in an old depot that if you cut grass, clean windows, or give tours of the property for 40 hours a year your dues are waived.  I’ll be looking around for you; I think it would be a good diversion for you…

Last night we had a 3 hour operating session on the LS&W.  The club layout is in the Henn Mansion that is closed for 2 months while the staff replaces carpet and completes some maintenance projects.  Bob and Jim arrived around 1800 hrs.  Bob ran the B&O F3 A-B and Jim brought a brass SD9 and a Mikado.  We found a joint on a curve that had moved off of center and a turnout with a worn plastic frog on the #2 main.  I also learned that if you leave 9 volt rechargeable batteries on the shelf they discharge over time. Fortunately I had just bought a bulk pack of 9v’s for the smoke detectors so we pushed forward. Over all everything actually ran ok and we had some oh’s and awe’s over some of the scenic work I’ve done.  I think the big hit was the mermaid on the deadheads by the bridge, roofers on the movie theater, and the details in the round house.  The new trees by MRC/JTT caught everyone’s attention.  $8 you get 100 saplings. They are not very impressive solo, but in a grove they look very nice
