Afternoon folks!

Just a cup of hot cocoa for me right now.....

Merry 2nd day of Christmas to all of you.  Only 10 more to go for this year!

John (Der), a happy Boxing Day to you, and may we all tread boldly in the footsteps of those who value giving more than getting!  I never heard of "Boxing Day" until my late wife went to work as a medical Secretary for a local doctor who was Canadian.  They always got Boxing Day off as well as Christmas.

Sorry to hear about Dean Freytag...  He was certainly one of the greats of the hobby and will be missed!

Well (deep subject), I was wrong about church attendance today.  If I count the choir, ushers, and all other participants, there were still more people who just came to church than us.  Had a total of 73 people there this morning.  Today I get to hang up my hat of "Head Usher" permanently....  Still hope to be called to be an usher whenever I can be of help, just won't be "in charge" again.  In a week and a half I will lead my last Deacons Board Meeting and will be stepping down as Moderator and will be off the active board.  We are constantly reminded that we are still Ordained Deacons.......Big Smile

I get to go over to my son's house for "leftovers" tonight.....  Sounds good to me.

Hope all of you have a wonderful day and get to play with the trains at least a bit today!  My prayers for all of you in the path of the storm going up the East coast today.  Stay safe!

Good Boxing Day - or "...the Feast of Steven" in Good King Wenceslaus, (Svatý Václav )if you prefer! Weather-wise we had a windy and cold Christmas but are bracing for some form of "Monster Storm" coming our way courtesy of "our neighbours to the South"! Clown. I say some form because as of last night the prediction for us was rain rather than snow, but windy withal. If it's going to be windy, I'd rather it be rain. Nothing overtly mrr for Christmas, but I know Kris was in to the LHS, so I'm expecting something for Thursday. (To celebrate Robbie and Jessica's anniversary?...you hadn't forgotten had you Robbie?Whistling)  I managed to get some time at the spray booth yesterday. The first coat of "zinc" went on fine, but has revealed just how poor a job I did of putting on the rivet strips on the larger silo.( Great blobs of glue marring the roof alongside the strips. Argh!Bang Head Also, the I beams I used for the legs, while the right scale, are too thin a plastic to withstand the Plastic Weld with which I attached the struts and so on. In consequence they have warped horribly, and the models are pretty much unacceptable. Add to that the overlapping of the corrugated sheets looks unreal.  I'm going to start over, I think, so long as the LHS (a possible visit Thursday when we go to the City for a movie and dinner) has brass I stock in the right size.  I can re-make the roof sections, and re-use some parts, like the roof caps and ladders.  Now I know what I'm doing, it shouldn't take THAT long. I've got the rivet strip making and application down far better now anyway.  I'm just glad that I didn't promise this project for any Christmas related deadline! Live and learn.

Ulrich: From the look of those icicles, the landlord should throw some more insulation in the attic! It's a beautiful place you have there.  Too bad the weather forced Christian's early return - still you did get to spend some time.

Ken:

Sharyon's boy friend Adam works at Guitar Center and has been in a few bands. I had to sell my Gibson 335 and Gibson Less Paul to make ends meet 2 years ago. Sue had been missing have guitar's in the house so I bought her a cheap one from the local pawn shop. Better than nothing and that is all I can say about it.
...WHEN (note, not IF, but WHEN) things get better, and you want to give Sue an improved guitar, you might find this site of interest.  Jay is a straight shooter, who's making a huge difference to a village in Uganda. http://www.duncanafrica.com/guitars  He also makes electric guitars.

...where exactly is Jersey? (and I don't mean the British Isle Laugh) I guess I've just been reading New Jersey instead of reading properly!

Looks like lunch (Christmas Dinner all over again!) won't be too long.  I hope to get a walk in afterwards, as it's likely to be less pleasant left to this evening! Noah tells me that with College and all he's not had time for the Forums anywhere, but is still involved in mrr, and has a new layout under way Thumbs Up

Morning Guys.

I was extremely busy and unable to stop in either Friday or yesterday, so I'd like to wish you all a (belated) Merry Christmas!
And to those of us in Canada, Happy Boxing Day!

Just made a transfer of funds online to make sure I have sufficient funds, then I'm heading out to the LHS to grab a few turnouts that I need to continue on the layout.

We're supposed to get 6-12" of snow today! This is the first real snow we've had all year. Too bad it won't give us an extra day off school, but whatever!

Ok, I gotta go. I'll talk more later.

Good Morning All!

Bummer! That is sad news about Dean..I first met Dean at the Columbus Model Railroad Club in the mid 60s...I seen his layout back in the early 90s.

Not much to report from the land of Buckeyes other then the Holidays is past and all went well yesterday other then my niece's husband wanted to know which lady cooked the ham so he can kiss the cook for the delicious ham..My niece said "Uncle Larry cooked it"..The look on his face was priceless and everybody had a good laugh..

Well with the Holidays over I can look forward to working on my HO equipment and start building Slate Creek.

I shall have a cup and look over da forum.

Have a good'un! Thumbs Up

Good Morning! Coffee please. Say, make it Chickory. Biscuits and gravy also thank you.

Welp. Snow is still here. Luckily there has been no additional buildup. Got that going for me.

BOWLING GREEN!!! Surprise Oh.Laugh Stick out tongue  I see now there’s one in Ohio. I thought…. Whew! I was gonna say. Gee whiz, Ohio isn’t that small of a state to just bip on down to Bowling Green, Ky for a couple hours Laugh.

My plan is to leisurely straighten up Toddland (where I’m king). If I was smart,  I should have removed several things when the dumpsters were around. Buuut noooooBang Head. I’ll manage by moving things around and creating yet another pile that will be temporaryConfused. You know the “gonna throw this away but not all at once” pile. Anyway, hopefully I’ll get some stuff done worthwhile. I must also clean up my office room. The walls are closing in on it too with the piles of unread Car Craft magazines and the piles of read, but not decided if I will keep, Model Railroader.

I see a use for issues of MR so I’m hesitant to throw them away. Buuut, I saw the same use 30 years ago for Car Craft. Now, I have 30 years of mags in it’s own shelf that haven’t even been looked at except when we moved as I re indexed them in order as they go mixed up in the move. Yes I had started an index, but that didn’t last but a few years.

I’m thinking about cutting the mags ( MR not CC)and saving certain articles. And of course pictures. I like pictures. What I don’t want is another collection of magazines that are not used as reference but for only a few. Or like Car Craft....none. I do like to flip back and see things from the past, like the cars from the seventies and eighties, but not sure if I will want to create another immovable object. (ever tried to move thirty years of magazines? My gosh I don’t know how the floor keeps from caving in.

Best get a move on. Still have to do some shopping on the "Bay" "If it's so rare, how come there's two or three listed every day" site. Not buying, I just like looking. Then I’ll just …. do….somethingConfused. Not sure I know how to feel not having something that needs done.

The day is young! There will be something. I shall savor this feeling for now.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!Yes

It is with a heavy heart that I report our old RR friend Dean Freytag died late last evening at his assisted living home in Ashland, OH.  For those of you who don’t know him just Google his name and you will see he was very active in promoting the hobby for many years.

I only met him once when I visited his layout in 2009, but after reading his articles in Model railroader over the years, reading his books, and watching his videos it feels like I’ve known him for years.

Good Morning

We had the 2 sisters with BIL's and neices/nephews down for the day yesterday.

I ended up with a bunch of MRR related kits as well as 4 new Bachmann H16-44's and a coupe of ATLAS RS's for the ever burgeoning 'collection'...

Flo, I'll have a coffee and a buttered croisant please...I'll be at the RC for a bit....Whistling

Good morning,

A Merry Christmas day plus one everyone!  I managed to drive to Toledo and Bowling Green last night without any problems.  Over all a good time was had by all.  Dorothy in her last minute nature decided to run to her sister’s to drop off presents in the morning putting us 2 hours behind schedule.  I ate way too much food yesterday so today I think light eating will be in order…

I’m glad to hear everyone had good experiences yesterday.

Yes Jeff, how did your nephew deal with the “surprise” ?

This one isn't my nephew per say, more like a nephew by marriage. He wasn't there today but will be opening his gifts at his family's home tomorrow. My niece has promised to get me a picture of the event if at all possible.

Evening, I'll take a couple of doses of "night medicine," if VINNIE isn't around and watching...

Just back from a house fire. An old farmhouse, with many rennovations well south of town. It's still standing. The second floor is completely gutted. The first has a lot of heat/smoke/water damage...and the rooms that were "spared" are messed up as we had to pull most of the ceiling down. I wish I could describe to you, how...surreal...it is to stand in somebody's living room, full of smoke, water pouring down from holes in the ceiling/floor above; and to see their Christmas tree, backlit by the red, white and blue lights of the fire apparatus outside.

As soon as I got home, Rerun met me at the door and promptly jammed his tongue in my ear. A warm puppy dog tongue never felt so good.

I'll be in a corner booth, cogitating for a bit.

If you would, raise a glass or lift some thoughts for those who are on-duty and/or wearing pagers this sacred weekend.

Stuffed. BUT I cleaned up dinner dishes and kitchen for Brenda. Yeah I know.

Two of the Grandsons and the Granddaughter with the dog all waiting anxiously for their gifts.

Missy has never had a treat THIS big before!

LaughLaugh

I did get a little done in the "not as bad as some peoples" train room. Hopefully I will get more done tomorrow.

Galaxy- I know the room you have. Before I brought the layout home from Mom’s house, I had just that room you have. See, when we put up walls in the basement 14 years ago, a room was built with a train room in mind. It was smaller than this room, but only because when the layout came home and was found to need more room, perfect wife allowed me to remove a wall. You can tell in the picture by the carpet, no carpet line. Anyway, that room became the room you describe. After all I didn’t have a train yet, so I can just set this stuff here. For a little while.

Ken- Sadly, in the early eighties, I too had a pair of shorts that short. Thankfully, no pictures. Laugh

Evenin' folks!

Zoe, just a decaf.

I am officially stuffed!  Had a huge Breakfast at my son's house.  Kind of a tradition we have started several years ago.  Only thing different is the MIL was the short order cook for all of us.  Let's see, eggs over easy, bacon, sausage, home fries, OJ, Toast, English Muffins then before we opened our presents, we opened up a bottle of Pear Mead.....  The Double Gold Medal stuff!  There were already sveral of the reletives from my DILs side of the family already there by the time I left to come home, feed the kitties and repack the car with firewood, baked squash, and presents for her.  By the time I arrived my son and his family were already there.  A bottle of wine was opened and them we sat down to backed Rock Cornish Game Hens, rife Pilaf, stuffing with cranberries and raisins, the squash, and a tasty salad.  After the presents were opened and the little ones had managed to completely tear apart my sister's house, we left and came back home to Geneva...  I then unpacked the car, gave the kitties some treats and headed back over to my son's house again for Christmas Dinner #2.  Ham with all the trimmings, baked beans, corn, potaoes au graten, fresh baked rolls, Sweet tea and several other choices of beverages, and piles of pies, cookies, fudge, and other deserts to choose from......  Then!!!!  i was invited down cellar to witness and document the annual family free for all known as the opening of the presents!  MY G*D!  I have never seen so many presents in my life.  Basically it would be major over kill for me, but is their family tradition.  My Granddaughters got probably 30 toys apiece today.....  I will get to the photos i took tomorrow.  I was sent home with a quarter of a pecan pie and several other goodies....  Sure glad the doctor doesn't have me checking my blood sugar on a daily basis........  I don't want to know!

Santa was very good to me today.  Got a pile of little odds and ends from Micro Mark (from my son), a tee shirt stating I am well blessed by having to adorable granddaughters!  Very true!  Pound of dark roast coffee beans from My Son's MIL, the usual calendar with photos my sister has taken this year (all the photos are of Bhuton from the trip she took a couple months back),  A metal Train Whistle Sign  (the W sign) that is currently in the back yard of one of her neighbors....  I have to take it down and get it to my house.  And she got me a Mohawk Buffalo Horn Rattle made by the Father of an old friend of mine who is a Mohawk person.  She and her husband work at Ganondagan the site of the old Seneca Nation.  I have known them for 20 years or so and have watched their beautiful Children grow into adults over the years.  They used to do presentations for our schools Outdoor Education Program for many years and we just hit it off.  Really a very nice and special present.  Beautifully hand carved and beaded as well.

My son was thrilled with the chain saw, and very excited to get the generator to use in emergencies (that was to the whole family).....  Got his wife a new Crockpot to replace one that had decide to stop working this Fall.

Jeffrey, glad to hear you got a sturdier tripod.  I trust you will find a good home for the old one!  I know there is someone you know who might still get some use out of the old thing.......WinkBig Smile  So is your nephew still able to sit up and breath....???

Good to hear so many of you had a great day.  Merry Christmas.... Day 2!  Turtle doves anyone?

Later!

It's 39° (28° wind chill) right now and we're expecting a low of 26°. Tomorrow will be somewhat cooler that today was. The high is due to be 50° and the low 23°. In simpler language it's gonna be cold. Fortunately there's no sign of rain or worse yet, snow. I know where I'm gonna be tomorrow. Right here by the heater! I set up the new tripod to see how it looks. That's a big metal monster that is. It's so big I can't spread the legs all the way open inside my trailer. It was designed to hold a 10 - 20 pound video camera. The heaviest of my cameras will be like a feather to it and I can use it with my old Olympus camera with no concern of it tilting. The tripod mount  on the Olympus is way off center as if it was put in as an after thought. On my light weight tripod it would tilt several degrees no matter how I tried correcting it. On this one it sits level and the tripod won't vibrate in a 15 to 20 mph wind because it spreads open so far and the legs have cleats to help keep it from shifting. I like this thing.

Was a pretty nice Christmas here as well.

I gave Sue the electric can opener this mourning to help out with making the Christmas lunch. (we ate at 1:00 PM) and while I sure she rather had jewelry she seemed pleased. Perfume on the other hand is going back, and I am fine with that. I just wanted to giver her at lease two things for Christmas.

Seems Adam my daughters boyfriend told Sharyon about the small cars I used on the layout. She bought me a Johnny Lighting Super Bird and a 69 440-6 pack Super Bee, pretty cool. She all so gave me a nice dress shirt, new watch and $25.00. All so wood train that wheels where made with button's, well I could have done with out that.

Sue all so went the Hot Wheels route. Now I am pretty picky and the cars have to look somewhat real. She bought me a 69 GTO Judge that is all jacked up in the back and slammed in the dirt in the front with what would have to be a 25-71 Super Charger that is 4 feet over the roof! Ick!  God awful looking thing and I love it because she tried! Later she told me she paid $5.00 for it at a flea market and bought it because it has the blower. It is a first edition from 2003 and still on the card, I am going to check to see if it is collectible before I open it.

Adam came across a POS Less Paul that the company he works for would not take in trade. Head was busted off, fret board was trashed and it had holes in the body. He has restored it and except for a Epiphoine head unit looks all most new. With the new figure board it plays great. Only thing missing is the pick guard and it is on it's way. It is a blond sunburst with tiger wood strip wood, looks a lot like my old one.

 Old one and young me!

Adam all so took the pawn shop guitar to redo the neck, it was bowed so badly you could shoot arrows with it! Whistling Next he s on the quest for a better amp for us. I had to sell the Costume Full Stack Amp with the 250 watt head. One I still have is practices amp and sort of sucks.

See you all Sunday, time to Rock!

Never leave the trainroom unattended for too long or the "I'll just set it here for the moment" issue will raise it's ugly head.

After my sister went through my room to straighten it out my room is in far better shape than that!! But then, you should have seen it BEFORE!!! Crying It was double that !!! Mind, i still have stuff in there but it is organized stuff--instead of just plopped stuff

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017

Gee. And you have more room and a much neater room and a much bigger room  than I do. Anything and everything in the trailer that we don't know what to do with and doesn't have  permenant home gets 'set here for just a little while" in that room and never gets moved. Instead stuff gets piled on top it. First trick is to actually get into the door of the room! {I mean it...the dehumidifier with a fan sitting on top it actually resides in the doorway!}

*sigh* to have that much "space" and "neatness".

EDiT: I see top honors again EAT Up_ HAm dinner, rice pilaf and asparagus shoots for everyone! WIth big fluffy rolls!
