Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Morn, uh, Afternoon! Bucket of coffee, plate of cheeseburgers please 'n thank-you.

1,000 posts? Geesh, I hadn't even noticed!

ULRICH, LEE, JEFF, JIM, GALAXY, ROBBY P, and RAY: Thanks guys, it's the one day of the year THAT really sets my mind spinning into "what-if" world.

JEFF: At Central City Fire, all three Lieutenants had "Safety Officer" on the helmet. We also were all three drafted into being the training officers. Then, in '97, we Lieut's became Captains, lost the Safety Officer title, but kept the white brain buckets. Of course, I had a brand new Lite Force 4 (I think it was). Took me quite a while to get it good and grunged up again. The damaged helmet had a wonderful array of smoke/soot upon it. I even was able to trace "CCFD" in it. But...they decided they'd best wash it up good...had lots of red stuff in it... I also started in '94. Was with Central City until the fall of '99, joined up with Springville in early 2001 until May 2002, then Troy Mills Fire from May 2002 until sometime in 2004 when I quit over safety concerns. Clarence let me join-up in 2008. Here, I'm "just" a fireman...but we operate under the theory THAT everybody on the scene is a "safety officer"with the ability to shut down any operation deemed unsafe. Ross Butterbrodt took it upon himself to be the Safety Officer in addition to being 1st. Assistant Chief. Somehow, he was everywhere on a scene. If ya did the least little thing the least bit "unsafe," there he was with a reminder to "do it right!" We miss him greatly!!!

LEE: I had a Metro 660 at Springville. Since personally obtained helmets were OK, and many of the guys had traditionals, I got me A Carins 1010...SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET helmet!  Unfortunately, I ended up having to sell it a few years back. Even if I did still have it, I couldn't wear it. Clarence helmets are yellow...Springville's were/are black.

JIM: THAT switcher is a MP-15DC. CNW kept at least one, often two in Cedar Rapids at the ex-Rock Island North Yard. The Quaker Oats complex had some really tight curves, and these seemed well-suited to handle them. The GP15-1s also were/are popular on the assignment.

ROBBY P: The worst thing about THAT picture, to me, is THAT was one of my all-time favorite fire engines!!! Yes, it's the WRONG color, and is kinda funny looking. I learned to love her though. The jump seat (behind the driver) was a good place for me to just sit and.....think.

GALAXY: I hope they get something figured out on your O2 situation. It sounds like they might need to put you on Oxygen during the day too. Again, hoping they get things figured out and get you some relief!

ULRICH: I'll raise THAT glass right back atcha....I can't imagine going through a crack-up at THAT speed! We were only going 30-35 in ours!!! But, we also had 750 gallons of H2O to help/hurt (LOTS of momentum there)!!!

Weelllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, I'd best get back at it. Gotta cover the December meeting of the Clear Creek Amana school board this evening. We're supposed to get s**w today and tonight. Not enough to cancel anything, just enough to make a 50-mile drive..."interesting."

Have a good, SAFE day everybody. Best wishes to all in need regardless of the "need!"

Chris

Good Evening,

Janie, please dear, a big mug of hot cocoa with - you know what! Thank you. I get to like this stuff.

Have not been up to anything else than fighting a blockage of the pipe in the kitchen sink. It ended in the kitchen being half-flooded which earned me a few new names from Petra Embarrassed Well, I managed to clean up, but the blockage is still there EmbarrassedEmbarrassed

Did some finishing touches to this UK layout, but will leave the rest to this UK bloke to figure out by himself now.

Jim- I have yet no clue what Petra will be up to. When our son was still with us, she did a lot of that Christmas bakery stuff, but it´s not worth the effort for just the two of us. Our son will be visiting us for a couple of days over Christmas and I am sure she will surprise us with some goodies.

I hope Barry is alright after his surgery - Angel for him!

I´ll be calling it a day now - CU all tomorrow!

Good Morning, Zoe - another 'good' day when I could slip away to the Diner here. I'll have a bowl of chili with grated cheese, some chopped onions on the side, and a RBF, please. Thank you!

(In honor of our predicted local slush freeze this afternoon and evening, the color/colour for the day will be purple...Wink Tomorrow morning, might be slipping and sliding on the way to w**k..)

cudaken

Jim, is "Cajun Chef" Ryan's a member here on the site or a real Chef? I did a goggle search and found a food chef by that name. Is it the same person?

Ken, I suspect you found the right Ryan - here's his site. I found the links to his 3D Plan It stuff don't appear to w**k for me, but I think those were published in issues of the Model Railroad Hobbyist e-mag (do a search for that phrase and you should find their site). Hey, I'd love to consistently get 20.5 mpg, and I have a 2007 Taurus (and I'd guess it weighs less than a Town Car does).

Chris, after reading your post from last night/this a.m., yeah, I'd say you earned your 'Lucky' title (the hard way)! Your and your two cohorts' AngelAngelAngel were definitely w**king overtime THAT day. Surprise I have no problem with your bit of 'profundity' there. And is that a SW1500 there? Or something that's a close cousin to one?

Surprise No, NO, Lee!! Don't turn in your manly-man card! Surely there's somewhere online that you could look instead! Laugh (After all, online searches are manly-man things, right? Whistling

NE Rail Modeler (aka Mad Max of the Freeways? Smile, Wink & Grin), congrats on getting your permit, and expect oncoming traffic to not always stay on their side of that centerline - keep yourself safe (and the neighborhood trash cans). Wink

Keeping Barry (and your procedure on the defib) in my prayers today. Barry, let us know how well things went once you can get to a 'puter (later).

(With apologies to Ray for trademark infringement...) It's a SLOW day at w**k today. My 10 o'clock follow-up appointment didn't show, and I don't think we've had many calls or walk-ins. And no, I'm not complaining - this about makes up for some hectic, back-to-back-one-after-another days back in the spring and summer. Wink

Ulrich - what kind of goodies is Petra fixing up for Christmas this year? And any chance of bringing a couple or so of those by the Diner? Dinner

I fiddled around some with my 'dream' revision of the future track plan (assuming a 12 X 20 space at some imaginary future time to play with). After I tinker with it some more, I'll post a pic of it in here for suggestions/dartboard use. Whistling

Think I'll get to my chili and RBF now. Prayers for warmer weather down South, and for less-than-predicted sn*wfall in our Northeastern Diners' backyards (or front yards, driveways, or...)

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good Afternoon All,

Went to sick call this morning. Did something to my right elbow Sunday and did more to it yesterday. I had gotten it hyperextended years ago so it's easy to mess up now. Long story short I dislocated it and got it put back at the chiropractors. X-rays were negative so that's good. Merely a little bump compared to what some of you have had happen.

Museum went well with the N gage surviving an entire week unscathed though we continue to experience traction problems with the Atlas 16-44 switcher. Back to back against a Lifelike DL-109 Proto, the Atlas won't start up without a lot of wheel slip and won't pull but half the cars the Lifelike does. I cleaned the wheels with solvent in case they'd gotten oily/cruddy but to no effect. Track is nearly new and clean as well though I haven't gleemed it yet (and won't until I get it all fettled).

Barry - hope the proceedure goes well and I hope the doc can figure out what's up with the breathing Galaxy.

Time to don w..k duds and head out.  Catch Y'all later,  J.R.

Chris......  Wow, I'd say the name "Lucky" is well deserved!  Oh, and to you, Jeff, Lee and the others who so generously have served in fire depts., Thanks!

NERM, congrats on getting the permit!  Hey everybody!  Be careful driving out there!  NERM's got his permit!!! Surprise

Got to get on with the day....

Mourning. Chilly like everybody else save those in the SW. 12* here adn don't want to know the wind chill. JUst a dusting of snow. Now if we can get into the KIA;'s doors which have a habit of freezing shut-a feature I'm not liking much. SIlicone on the door gaskets doesn;t seem to have helped. Have to reapply when it gets up to 32 * in the next few days {I know a heat wave} but this time appy the silicone liberally and not wipe it with a cloth reducing it;s strength.

Chris that was some ordeal you went through. glad you survived it. And Cpngrats on your 1,000 post! DOesn't it feel good to know you had 1,000 {important} things to say? {of course I said when I reach 1,000 and even teh 2,000 mark that I had "to much time on my hands" LOL

Thanks for the well wishes for the breathing. sometimes it feels like I can't breathe at all, other times when I'm off my night O2, I am inhaling/exhaling, but don't feel like i'm getting any air {oxygen}.Dunno

Well maybe we go help some friends do a thing or two. Depends how much snow they got they already got 19". They are 1/2 hour north, but closerto Ithaca and Cayuga lake than to Binghamton. They tend to get what Ithace gets. We just get dustings to an inch or two here in Binghamton area, fortunately.

the North East Rail Modeler

Well, I finally got my permit today. and I drove around the neghborhood for the first time today, too.

After we got home, my Dad and I took my truck out around the neghborhood, and let me tell you: Driving on a road with other drivers is NOT as easy as I thought, especially when that U-Haul truck started comming into my lane on the curve ( I almost took out the neghbors trash cans)

In short, My heart was racing the whole time, I only did right-hand turns, I didn't hit anything, and the neghborhood is still as it's suppose to be: quiet, without any added damage.

It was not as easy as the Driver's Ed simulators made it out to be (then again, in a simulator, there really wasn't any threat of a collision)

Thank goodness I wasn't on those roads! LOL just joking. At least you lef the neighborhood as you found it. Try left turns next time they aren't that hard. ANd many people will take their half of the road out of the middle. With the type of weather you guys have been getting, you may have to learn to drive on ice and snow. Isn't much hope of driving on Ice, but snow makes roads "greasy" and of couse, slippery.fortunately fo you your snows don;t last long. Just long enough to make a mess out of the roads if you ahve to be onthem. You'll do fine driving! And remember: 1} always be courteous to other drivers, 2} always look OUT for the other driver {like the guy on the curve}, 3} always be prepared to slow down or stop!4} NO cell phone talking or texting while driving!!!!!!!!

HAve a great day!

Good morning. It's 50° here and mostly cloudy. The high will be around 70° and it will be mostly cloudy with a 10 mph south wind.

I got the ballast from the old roadbeds scrapped up yesterday. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Now in the areas where I used sand it was hard as a rock! But the WS ballast secured with white glue came up without too much of a problem. I intend to soak the chunks of ballast and wash out the glue and reuse the ballast. I still have my list of HO items that I'm getting rid of up. I added to the list yesterday. If you're interested send me a PM and I'll give you the link.

Good Morning,

Jeff, I saw on the news you guys are in the middle of a cold snap that extends all the way to Miami.  I’d ship you some heat, but it’s Zero outside (-9 wind chill) right now and I don’t think that will help.

Jim, I tried to take a few pictures Sunday but none of them turned out.  I adjusted some settings on my camera to take Christmas light pictures and can’t remember what settings I used to take close up pictures of the layout.  I will need to continue playing with the settings or I will have to turn in my manly-man card and read the directions.

I don’t have a decorated Christmas tree like Jeff’s but I do have the Christmas tree lot on the layout and wreaths for the locomotives.

That’s one bad hat Chris! You’re lucky you remember to put it on before the accident. I paid $50 for a Metro 660 back in the day and had it on when the roof of a church collapsed on me.  When my partner and I opened our eyes we were in the basement, not much left of the helmet but I got hit on the head so hard I lost my color vision for about 3 hours. The second Metro 660 and I were in a back draft, the visor looked like a toasted marshmallow and when I walked out the stickers on the helmet were still on fire, but my head and face were untouched.  The third Metro 660 still hangs in my train room with a few scratches and some soot on the liner.

Chris: That was quite an ordeal you went through. I had my close brush in 1980 due to a car accident. I woke up at Ft Sam Houston, San Antonio Texas with not one but two severe concussions resulting in a bad case of water on the brain. They very nearly lost me three times that first night until they got my condition stabilized. I spent more than a month in the hospital - at Christmas to boot. Incidentally your helmet - minus the damage - looks like mine, right down to the 'Safety Officer' emblem, except mine is yellow and the rank is captain. I've been a fire fighter since 1994 and I can tell these young hot dogs who THINK it's a glamorous and exciting line of work that while it has it's exciting moments there's nothing 'glamorous' about it. It's a job that takes a very serious commitment. As one Safety Officer to another - and no pun intended - Stay lucky.

Morgan:

OOH! Nice pic. Southern Duplex? Or is there a second set of drivers in there I'm missing?

.....as you say, I just save 'em and post 'em. I don't claim to know beans about them, but I did notice the steam from the tender and wondered whence it came.Laugh

I still want to build my Duplex Cab FOrward with the Saddletank on it.

do you have pics of what that would look like?

Hmm. More I look at it, more I think I'm seeing three sets of cylinders, meaning it's an Erie/Virginian Triplex. (They had drivers under the tender, hence the steam exhaust) Mark (help me with the username) has a Southern Dup in his signature.

I need to update the picture, I'm using a Spectrum Light Mountain as a base, the chassis went to repairing my George Washington Heavy. The Cab face is one of the Precision Scale parts. I'm tirn between using a Vandy or a box tender. And I think I'd like to use a Bach Consolidation drive under the tender. (They've got thir parts department up and going now...)

Good Morning Everyone,

Bill - boy, are you up early!

Chris - Happy B-Day on the date of your rebirth and your post # 1,000)! I had my fair share of those close encounters, starting with heart attacks, minor strokes and to top it off, a head-on collision on the Autobahn, which I survived nearly unhurt, while in the other car there were three deaths to be mourned. The driver turned on the Autobahn and was heading my way, while I was doing 125 mph. The only thing I remember is that I attempted to pull over - the rest is just blank.

I´ll raise my glass with you, Chris!

Not much going on this morning, so I´ll stay here at the RC and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Have a safe day!

Geeeeeeeeesh! I finally get to sit down and have a cup of coffee with BILL! Nice to see you sir, uh, you gonna be bringing anymore of them lady-friends of yours around again anytime soon???MischiefWhistling And GARRY is here too? Nighthawks in the Diner time.

I've been piddling away at some w**k stuff, trying to get a jump on things so THAT I won't be buried in it come Thursday night. But...Dec. 14th was a day of distraction, has been since Dec. 14th, 1996. THAT's the day I had my closest brush with death when the pumper I was aboard slid off a muddy/icy/slushy road and rolled over in the ditch. The result was my being trapped under the truck blinded and choked by my air mask. Of the three of us (Firefighter Chuck Lafler-driver, Firefighter Doug Webster, and myself playing Lieutenant), all were ejected; I was the most seriously injured with multiple skull fractures, a significant concussion, multiple facial fractures, and my lower jaw was snapped in two.

The pile of stuff behind the front wheel is the gear they cut off of me, and THAT is where they pulled me out from under the Engine. The black thing to the right is the seat Doug and I were sitting on in the back of the cab. Where the canopy roof is crushed down, is where I had been sitting. IF I had not been tossed out, I would've been crushed. My Morning Pride LiteForce helmet was badly damaged. The inner and outer shells were cracked, right where the skull fractures were. I thought our helmets were "el-cheapo's," but I've been a major fan of Morning Pride turnout gear and helmets ever since. THAT helmet saved my life...no doubt about it.

To this day, I have noticed personality changes, some memory issues, my sinus SUCKS, skull-crushing headaches are the order of the day when it's hot and humid, among other less-irritating "reminders." For surviving this, I earned the nickname "Lucky." I even was presented a dept. T-shirt with THAT embroidered upon it.

So...ever since THAT day, the 14th of Dec. has been a day of distraction and contemplation as I think about what could've happened...indeed, what more than likely "should" have happened. Normally when a fire engine rolls over and guys are ejected, somebody dies. With this one, there should've been at least one, if not three names engraved on the Line of Duty Death (LODD) wall at the Iowa Firefighter's Memorial near Coralville.

Thus, even though it is now 52 minutes into Dec. 15th, I raise a glass (of Southern Comfort). I raise a glass to those of us here in the Diner who have had THAT close brush with death, who almost shook hands with The Reaper; who have had "a sneak peek at Jesus (to borrow from The Drew Cary Show)." Why we got THAT "second chance," we may know, we may never know. Yet...here we are.

OK, enough profundity... I don't want to ruin our image! I'm headed off to bed. I'm leaving the SoCo behind the counter. Feel free (legal age gents only please) to ask the ladies for "Lucky's Night Medicine."

Here's wishing a good, SAFE day for us all. Special thoughts to BARRY as he gets his defib today.

Evening all, just a RBF for me.  I'm about to head off to bed as I have a truck that's going to need a tune up first thing in the morning so I don't need to go spending the night up on here, although it doesn't mean I don't want to.

Jim, on the house front, we've got all but one bathroom and one bedroom finished up, kinda holding off during the winter on things so that once spring hits we can knock the remaining bathroom and bedroom out.  We have all the materials, just don't have the gumption to do it during the winter.  One the layout front I've converted a bunch of cars that I'm going to be keeping over to the various couplers you sent to me, again, my most sincere thanks for them.  I'm also working on repainting locomotives and cars so that I'll have one less thing to worry with once I get around to actually starting on bench and trackwork.

Barry, prayers and well wishes from me and mine to you and yours tomorrow, and hopefully the snow won't delay it any longer so that it'll be over and done with and you will be well on the road to recovery.

Well, its supposed to start warming up a little bit more here in Bama starting tomorrow, but it also means that the rain chances will increase, but that'll be all right.  Welp, guess I'll finish my RBF and head off to bed.  Goodnight all, and later taters!

It rarely goes below 10 F here, but it was 5 F this morning. Ice is forming on the lake, and that is rare also. Nuts to global warming.

Ken .... I emailed Ryan and suggested he check in here at the dinner (Flo... have some coffee ready for Ryan, please) .. Yes, he's Cajun Chef Ryan...  He and his family left New Orleans after Katrina for North Carolina. .. He sells some super good spices on the internet. He is talented with softeware, too.

Jeff ... Did someone say "Grin and Bear it"... Tell your friend to reverse directions, please. Smile, Wink & Grin As for the other critter, who gives a hoot? Whistling

JimCG ... Good to see you here.

Barry ... I recall tomorrow is the day for the surgery. Am I correct? ... Prayers for you. I have faith it will go fine for you.

Galaxy ... As Ray says, I hope the docs solve the breathing situation for you.  Prayers.

Cheers, everybody

NE MRR'er, I think (from this morning's weatherguesser) that you need to head further south (like Miami or Key West) to get warm today! Surprise

No such luck. : Miami- high 46 and Key West- high 56.

It may be warm to everyone up North with snow flowing out everywhere, but for me, it's still too cold.

I see my learning the gutar has livened up the joint (eather that, or everyone came out of hiding after I said I don't have my permit yet)

Well, I finally got my permit today. and I drove around the neghborhood for the first time today, too.

Here's the report: At the DMV, they have up-graded the "sign your name here" to a computer signer thingy (the signing pad for use with a credit card at the grocery store) and that was a pain. I had to sign my name close to 30 or so times before I got it right (Thank goodness it was a quiet day, and that the clerk was a patent person) and after that, I got my lisence (I can't sign my name to save my life)

I'll try to check back in later...

Jeff???  You having some Bi-Polar difficulties today??? Whistling

Galaxy, I sure hope the docs stay on top of whatever is causing your being out of breath like THAT!  Doesn't sound like a good thing at all.

I got my ears "roto rooted" out this afternoon.  She said they weren't too bad actually, but did remove wax from both ears.  I seem to be hearing a bit better.  I also need to get the hearing aids cleaned.  THAT will probably make a bigger difference in my being able to understand people.  Lets see, I also mailed the Christmas Cards, did some shopping, and fed the woodstove.  THAT didn't want to light this morning...  Took a while to get a good fire as the wood was some I brought in after the rain the other day.  Could be a bit damp.  It has finally taken off and is heating the house quite nicely at the moment.  It is all of 14°F outside with a wind chill of 1°F.

Started cleaning up the mess in the train room.  Have a lot to get put away and cleaned up if I am to invite people over here during the Holidays to see the layout.

Catch you all a bit later!

Jim is "Cajun Chef" Ryan's a member here on the site or a real Chef? I did a goggle search and found a food chef by that name. Is it the same person?

Flo, just a Beer Please, I won't be staying long.

Jeffery Let me know if you don't sell the flatcars. At this point flat cars is the only thing I could use.

On the work front. My first big concern is the gas I am using for training I am sucking up around $10.00 a day. Between cold weather (Town Car mileage suffers when it is below 35) and traffic I am only getting 20.5 MPG. With out the traffic (rush hour) and warmer temperatures I was getting 26.5 MPG. Round trip is 62 miles.

Training has turned into a cluster something. Now, I understand with the passing of the father. I just hope I don't pay the prices when I hit the store.

Got the pay plan explained better, and feeling better about that as well. Rest of the day was a waste as far as I am concern.

 See you Wednesday.

Hi guys,

I told the pulmonologist I'm at a point where I can't breathe halfway walking toa store. MOHhas to let me out and then go park. WHen we go the towers at the hospital for his office I had to pause 3 times to catch my breath. It's really bad when it is cold like it is now, or when tehre is a lot of moisture in the air. I can winded doing y morning constitutional or waking the 1/10th mile to the mailbox on a flat paved surface. If I undload a few groceries, I sit and pant for about 20 mins before I can put the groceries away. Except at night when my pulse oxygen drops to low which is why I have O2 at night, my pulseox remains good, but how hard are my poor lungs working to get that good pulseox reading leaving my breathless.

I was a smoker, but quit 5 years ago so I wouldn't have such problems. My asthma has actually gotten worse since I quit smoking.

Of course 3 years ago I had a severe case of pneumonia and spent 2.5 weeks in the hospital battling it. That really started me on a downhill course.

He sent me for xrays and bloodwork to determine If I might have some blood clots somewhere and to see him again next week. Then he may order more tests.

We shall see what we shall see when we shall see it.

Have a great night guys

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

JR:

Ray's giving guitar lessons in classic Spanish? Sounded like the inquisition there for a minute - but then (ta da) No-One Expects The Spanish Inquisition!   CUL, J.R.
...Oh No, Not the Soft cushions! Stick out tongue

Morgan:

OOH!

Ray:

Galaxy, just remember good choices come with experience.  THAT involves having made some bad choices!
Something about "helping" chicks out of their shells and their not being able to survive because one did that came to mind when I read that! Whistling

Robby:

The warehouse has two sidings and one of the hoppers were on both sidings, so that's not good.

Ulrich: Yes, that 3x7 N Scale layout would be a lot of fun to operate! I like the station siding with platforms on both sides - gives the school kids much opportunity for mayhem! Mischief

Signal is now ready for install I have to prep the site (carve out scenery to take the base, and drill out existing hole through baseboard to take the LED assembly. Once installed, I'll have to make a dummy signal facing the other way (near a tunnel mouth, no way to see it if it were a working one).

Arts Soc Dinner tonight - we're bringing a shrimp and scallops curry.Dinner Better get ready for that.

Good Evening,

my internet connection went down, just as I was typing up a lengthy post Sad

Janie, I´d like to go for a mug of hot cocoa with some rum in it, please.

Did a little bit of serious work today and drew a track plan for a friend of mine in the UK. It´s a small 3 by 7 ft. layout, which is supposed to catch a typical suburban UK flavor.

This is it:

Hope you all have a good one!
