Good Morning Everyone,

Bill - boy, are you up early!

Chris - Happy B-Day on the date of your rebirth and your post # 1,000)! I had my fair share of those close encounters, starting with heart attacks, minor strokes and to top it off, a head-on collision on the Autobahn, which I survived nearly unhurt, while in the other car there were three deaths to be mourned. The driver turned on the Autobahn and was heading my way, while I was doing 125 mph. The only thing I remember is that I attempted to pull over - the rest is just blank.

I´ll raise my glass with you, Chris!

Not much going on this morning, so I´ll stay here at the RC and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Have a safe day!

Morgan:

OOH! Nice pic. Southern Duplex? Or is there a second set of drivers in there I'm missing?

.....as you say, I just save 'em and post 'em. I don't claim to know beans about them, but I did notice the steam from the tender and wondered whence it came.Laugh

I still want to build my Duplex Cab FOrward with the Saddletank on it.

do you have pics of what that would look like?

Hmm. More I look at it, more I think I'm seeing three sets of cylinders, meaning it's an Erie/Virginian Triplex. (They had drivers under the tender, hence the steam exhaust) Mark (help me with the username) has a Southern Dup in his signature.

I need to update the picture, I'm using a Spectrum Light Mountain as a base, the chassis went to repairing my George Washington Heavy. The Cab face is one of the Precision Scale parts. I'm tirn between using a Vandy or a box tender. And I think I'd like to use a Bach Consolidation drive under the tender. (They've got thir parts department up and going now...)

Chris: That was quite an ordeal you went through. I had my close brush in 1980 due to a car accident. I woke up at Ft Sam Houston, San Antonio Texas with not one but two severe concussions resulting in a bad case of water on the brain. They very nearly lost me three times that first night until they got my condition stabilized. I spent more than a month in the hospital - at Christmas to boot. Incidentally your helmet - minus the damage - looks like mine, right down to the 'Safety Officer' emblem, except mine is yellow and the rank is captain. I've been a fire fighter since 1994 and I can tell these young hot dogs who THINK it's a glamorous and exciting line of work that while it has it's exciting moments there's nothing 'glamorous' about it. It's a job that takes a very serious commitment. As one Safety Officer to another - and no pun intended - Stay lucky.

Good Morning,

Jeff, I saw on the news you guys are in the middle of a cold snap that extends all the way to Miami.  I’d ship you some heat, but it’s Zero outside (-9 wind chill) right now and I don’t think that will help.

Jim, I tried to take a few pictures Sunday but none of them turned out.  I adjusted some settings on my camera to take Christmas light pictures and can’t remember what settings I used to take close up pictures of the layout.  I will need to continue playing with the settings or I will have to turn in my manly-man card and read the directions.

I don’t have a decorated Christmas tree like Jeff’s but I do have the Christmas tree lot on the layout and wreaths for the locomotives.

That’s one bad hat Chris! You’re lucky you remember to put it on before the accident. I paid $50 for a Metro 660 back in the day and had it on when the roof of a church collapsed on me.  When my partner and I opened our eyes we were in the basement, not much left of the helmet but I got hit on the head so hard I lost my color vision for about 3 hours. The second Metro 660 and I were in a back draft, the visor looked like a toasted marshmallow and when I walked out the stickers on the helmet were still on fire, but my head and face were untouched.  The third Metro 660 still hangs in my train room with a few scratches and some soot on the liner.

Good morning. It's 50° here and mostly cloudy. The high will be around 70° and it will be mostly cloudy with a 10 mph south wind.

I got the ballast from the old roadbeds scrapped up yesterday. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Now in the areas where I used sand it was hard as a rock! But the WS ballast secured with white glue came up without too much of a problem. I intend to soak the chunks of ballast and wash out the glue and reuse the ballast. I still have my list of HO items that I'm getting rid of up. I added to the list yesterday. If you're interested send me a PM and I'll give you the link.

Mourning. Chilly like everybody else save those in the SW. 12* here adn don't want to know the wind chill. JUst a dusting of snow. Now if we can get into the KIA;'s doors which have a habit of freezing shut-a feature I'm not liking much. SIlicone on the door gaskets doesn;t seem to have helped. Have to reapply when it gets up to 32 * in the next few days {I know a heat wave} but this time appy the silicone liberally and not wipe it with a cloth reducing it;s strength.

Chris that was some ordeal you went through. glad you survived it. And Cpngrats on your 1,000 post! DOesn't it feel good to know you had 1,000 {important} things to say? {of course I said when I reach 1,000 and even teh 2,000 mark that I had "to much time on my hands" LOL

Thanks for the well wishes for the breathing. sometimes it feels like I can't breathe at all, other times when I'm off my night O2, I am inhaling/exhaling, but don't feel like i'm getting any air {oxygen}.Dunno

Well maybe we go help some friends do a thing or two. Depends how much snow they got they already got 19". They are 1/2 hour north, but closerto Ithaca and Cayuga lake than to Binghamton. They tend to get what Ithace gets. We just get dustings to an inch or two here in Binghamton area, fortunately.

the North East Rail Modeler

Well, I finally got my permit today. and I drove around the neghborhood for the first time today, too.

After we got home, my Dad and I took my truck out around the neghborhood, and let me tell you: Driving on a road with other drivers is NOT as easy as I thought, especially when that U-Haul truck started comming into my lane on the curve ( I almost took out the neghbors trash cans)

In short, My heart was racing the whole time, I only did right-hand turns, I didn't hit anything, and the neghborhood is still as it's suppose to be: quiet, without any added damage.

It was not as easy as the Driver's Ed simulators made it out to be (then again, in a simulator, there really wasn't any threat of a collision)

Thank goodness I wasn't on those roads! LOL just joking. At least you lef the neighborhood as you found it. Try left turns next time they aren't that hard. ANd many people will take their half of the road out of the middle. With the type of weather you guys have been getting, you may have to learn to drive on ice and snow. Isn't much hope of driving on Ice, but snow makes roads "greasy" and of couse, slippery.fortunately fo you your snows don;t last long. Just long enough to make a mess out of the roads if you ahve to be onthem. You'll do fine driving! And remember: 1} always be courteous to other drivers, 2} always look OUT for the other driver {like the guy on the curve}, 3} always be prepared to slow down or stop!4} NO cell phone talking or texting while driving!!!!!!!!

HAve a great day!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have the Eggs Benedict along with a cup of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug.

Well (deep subject), it seems another Winter Storm has fizzled out in the Finger Lakes.  Yep we done got a whole .1" of snow out of the 1 to 2 feet predicted.....  Doesn't hurt my feelings any.  I'm sure we will get our share over the next 3 months or so.Whistling  Currently 18°F with a high later of 22°F!  (We're havin' a heat wave.....,  Tropical Heat Wave........)

Chris......  Wow, I'd say the name "Lucky" is well deserved!  Oh, and to you, Jeff, Lee and the others who so generously have served in fire depts., Thanks!

NERM, congrats on getting the permit!  Hey everybody!  Be careful driving out there!  NERM's got his permit!!! Surprise

Got to get on with the day....

Later!

Good Afternoon All,

Went to sick call this morning. Did something to my right elbow Sunday and did more to it yesterday. I had gotten it hyperextended years ago so it's easy to mess up now. Long story short I dislocated it and got it put back at the chiropractors. X-rays were negative so that's good. Merely a little bump compared to what some of you have had happen.

Museum went well with the N gage surviving an entire week unscathed though we continue to experience traction problems with the Atlas 16-44 switcher. Back to back against a Lifelike DL-109 Proto, the Atlas won't start up without a lot of wheel slip and won't pull but half the cars the Lifelike does. I cleaned the wheels with solvent in case they'd gotten oily/cruddy but to no effect. Track is nearly new and clean as well though I haven't gleemed it yet (and won't until I get it all fettled).

Barry - hope the proceedure goes well and I hope the doc can figure out what's up with the breathing Galaxy.

Time to don w..k duds and head out.  Catch Y'all later,  J.R.

Good Morning, Zoe - another 'good' day when I could slip away to the Diner here. I'll have a bowl of chili with grated cheese, some chopped onions on the side, and a RBF, please. Thank you!

(In honor of our predicted local slush freeze this afternoon and evening, the color/colour for the day will be purple...Wink Tomorrow morning, might be slipping and sliding on the way to w**k..)

cudaken

Jim, is "Cajun Chef" Ryan's a member here on the site or a real Chef? I did a goggle search and found a food chef by that name. Is it the same person?

Ken, I suspect you found the right Ryan - here's his site. I found the links to his 3D Plan It stuff don't appear to w**k for me, but I think those were published in issues of the Model Railroad Hobbyist e-mag (do a search for that phrase and you should find their site). Hey, I'd love to consistently get 20.5 mpg, and I have a 2007 Taurus (and I'd guess it weighs less than a Town Car does).

Chris, after reading your post from last night/this a.m., yeah, I'd say you earned your 'Lucky' title (the hard way)! Your and your two cohorts' AngelAngelAngel were definitely w**king overtime THAT day. Surprise I have no problem with your bit of 'profundity' there. And is that a SW1500 there? Or something that's a close cousin to one?

Surprise No, NO, Lee!! Don't turn in your manly-man card! Surely there's somewhere online that you could look instead! Laugh (After all, online searches are manly-man things, right? Whistling

NE Rail Modeler (aka Mad Max of the Freeways? Smile, Wink & Grin), congrats on getting your permit, and expect oncoming traffic to not always stay on their side of that centerline - keep yourself safe (and the neighborhood trash cans). Wink

Keeping Barry (and your procedure on the defib) in my prayers today. Barry, let us know how well things went once you can get to a 'puter (later).

(With apologies to Ray for trademark infringement...) It's a SLOW day at w**k today. My 10 o'clock follow-up appointment didn't show, and I don't think we've had many calls or walk-ins. And no, I'm not complaining - this about makes up for some hectic, back-to-back-one-after-another days back in the spring and summer. Wink

Ulrich - what kind of goodies is Petra fixing up for Christmas this year? And any chance of bringing a couple or so of those by the Diner? Dinner

I fiddled around some with my 'dream' revision of the future track plan (assuming a 12 X 20 space at some imaginary future time to play with). After I tinker with it some more, I'll post a pic of it in here for suggestions/dartboard use. Whistling

Think I'll get to my chili and RBF now. Prayers for warmer weather down South, and for less-than-predicted sn*wfall in our Northeastern Diners' backyards (or front yards, driveways, or...)

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good Evening,

Janie, please dear, a big mug of hot cocoa with - you know what! Thank you. I get to like this stuff.

Have not been up to anything else than fighting a blockage of the pipe in the kitchen sink. It ended in the kitchen being half-flooded which earned me a few new names from Petra Embarrassed Well, I managed to clean up, but the blockage is still there EmbarrassedEmbarrassed

Did some finishing touches to this UK layout, but will leave the rest to this UK bloke to figure out by himself now.

Jim- I have yet no clue what Petra will be up to. When our son was still with us, she did a lot of that Christmas bakery stuff, but it´s not worth the effort for just the two of us. Our son will be visiting us for a couple of days over Christmas and I am sure she will surprise us with some goodies.

I hope Barry is alright after his surgery - Angel for him!

I´ll be calling it a day now - CU all tomorrow!

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Morn, uh, Afternoon! Bucket of coffee, plate of cheeseburgers please 'n thank-you.

1,000 posts? Geesh, I hadn't even noticed!

ULRICH, LEE, JEFF, JIM, GALAXY, ROBBY P, and RAY: Thanks guys, it's the one day of the year THAT really sets my mind spinning into "what-if" world.

JEFF: At Central City Fire, all three Lieutenants had "Safety Officer" on the helmet. We also were all three drafted into being the training officers. Then, in '97, we Lieut's became Captains, lost the Safety Officer title, but kept the white brain buckets. Of course, I had a brand new Lite Force 4 (I think it was). Took me quite a while to get it good and grunged up again. The damaged helmet had a wonderful array of smoke/soot upon it. I even was able to trace "CCFD" in it. But...they decided they'd best wash it up good...had lots of red stuff in it... I also started in '94. Was with Central City until the fall of '99, joined up with Springville in early 2001 until May 2002, then Troy Mills Fire from May 2002 until sometime in 2004 when I quit over safety concerns. Clarence let me join-up in 2008. Here, I'm "just" a fireman...but we operate under the theory THAT everybody on the scene is a "safety officer"with the ability to shut down any operation deemed unsafe. Ross Butterbrodt took it upon himself to be the Safety Officer in addition to being 1st. Assistant Chief. Somehow, he was everywhere on a scene. If ya did the least little thing the least bit "unsafe," there he was with a reminder to "do it right!" We miss him greatly!!!

LEE: I had a Metro 660 at Springville. Since personally obtained helmets were OK, and many of the guys had traditionals, I got me A Carins 1010...SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET helmet!  Unfortunately, I ended up having to sell it a few years back. Even if I did still have it, I couldn't wear it. Clarence helmets are yellow...Springville's were/are black.

JIM: THAT switcher is a MP-15DC. CNW kept at least one, often two in Cedar Rapids at the ex-Rock Island North Yard. The Quaker Oats complex had some really tight curves, and these seemed well-suited to handle them. The GP15-1s also were/are popular on the assignment.

ROBBY P: The worst thing about THAT picture, to me, is THAT was one of my all-time favorite fire engines!!! Yes, it's the WRONG color, and is kinda funny looking. I learned to love her though. The jump seat (behind the driver) was a good place for me to just sit and.....think.

GALAXY: I hope they get something figured out on your O2 situation. It sounds like they might need to put you on Oxygen during the day too. Again, hoping they get things figured out and get you some relief!

ULRICH: I'll raise THAT glass right back atcha....I can't imagine going through a crack-up at THAT speed! We were only going 30-35 in ours!!! But, we also had 750 gallons of H2O to help/hurt (LOTS of momentum there)!!!

Weelllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll, I'd best get back at it. Gotta cover the December meeting of the Clear Creek Amana school board this evening. We're supposed to get s**w today and tonight. Not enough to cancel anything, just enough to make a 50-mile drive..."interesting."

Have a good, SAFE day everybody. Best wishes to all in need regardless of the "need!"

Hello ..

Uh, oh! Jim ate all the chile. Watch out!

Barry .. Thinking of you today. Prayers continue.

Chris ... WOW!... I sure glad you survived that crash. Amazing!

Ken ... Regarding 3rd Planet and Ryan.... He should be with the diner soon. He is trying to catch up now after his computer crashed recently. ... I tried an early version of 3rd Planet and gave up. Too much learning curve for me. I used the T-Square and other old drafting equipment. ... As i Build they layout, I revise anyhow.

JR ... I hope your elbo recovers OK for you.

Howdy.

So far Mom has been here since Monday eve and she has scared us twice. But things today seem ok so far. She needs twenty four hour attention. I mean twenty four hours. I don't know how I'll get to finish the house at this rate. luckily the remodel is don and the only thing I have to do is install a showr head and the water line for 1 toilet. Cleanup is in store, but that shouldn't be but a days worth of vacuming and dusting of window sills. There is one wall I need to paint upstairs. I forgot about that, but all in all it could go on the market Monday if, if, IF I get some time this weekend to get out there. Today is a no go. Was going to go out there tonght after Brenda gets home, but it's her turn to bow and Mom knows it so if she stayed home Mom would be upset.

I kinda skimmed the posts as there were a lot of them, And all I can think of to add is:

Best watch what you say, Ray can hear better.

And;

Ken- Ryan did a 2 or 3 part article for a certain online magazine about this program and how to use it. I won't mention the name of the magazine but it is fairly well knownWhistlingZip it!.  I believe it was two or three parts, but it was very well written and recieved many compliments. Myself, it was hard to read because I don't have the program. I'm a paper and pencil kinda guy. I read it, well, most of it anyway, because Ryan wrote it. but it was greek to me.

HEAR THAT RYAN??!! I READ IT "CAUSE I LIKE YOU!!!  (hahahaha)

And when you get a bit back on your feet with the new job, I highly recommend ordering Ryan's Finger Lickin' Rub. It's great on most everything. Really it s.

**The above statement was not meant as an advertising statement for Finger Lickin Rub. I have no ties to Ryan or his business. I make the recommendation for the same reasons someone would mention their glue or model kit preference. Don't want to get anybody, myself or Ryan especially, in trouble with the rail cops.**

That guy sounds like me. If I see someone doing something unsafe or doing it the wrong way I'll correct them on it and if they keep screwing it up I'll take them off that assignment and put them on something else. Gos help the guy at the end of a hose with no bunker gear or his bunker coat open because his butt is mine! I take that very seriously.

Just got back from town. That was a trip! Wind is blowing from the south at 16 mph with gusts to 27-30 mph. My old van was getting blown around pretty good but I kept it in the proper lane. Stopped at the bank to make a deposit and order new checks then on to the post office to deliver some packages. From there it was to Wal-Mart to get some new briefs, T-shirts and socks. Looked at some belts too but didn't looks the ones in my size. From there it was a wind blown trip back home. Other than that there's not much going on.

Hey guys. Flo, a meat pizza for me.

Haven't really dropped in in a while. been busy finishing up all my coursework and this week is finals week. Tonight is my last final for the semester! luckily this one is open book and the others were fairly easy.

Chris, yikes. good thing you survived that one.

Jeff, I may be wrong, but I think the hospital where you were at in 1980 is the same one my brother was born at.

I'd talk more but I have to go to my finals. so my my order to go.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Glad the installation of your defib unit was successful.

Barry, Glad to hear the proceedure went well in light of the "complications". Now if it had been Garry that got the defibulator we'd need to as if it was going to keep him from "fibbing"?  J.R.

Barry ... I'm pleased you had the device implanted, and it went well for you. That is a big relief to know you are protected. As I've said, my implanted device has saved my life. Also, there are times, when my wife kids me, and she says it should have a speed control. Fast for "honey dos" of course. Slow for ... uh ... well ... never mind. ..

JR ... Funny.

Good Evening

...And, of course, my heart spent the first couple of hours skipping and bouncing all over the place but now it is all quiet and at a good regular tempo.Smile, Wink & Grin

My heart does palpitation flip-flops all the time too, not fun, I know. I take two kinds of meds twice a day to keep it straight and level. Hope it all works well for you!

RAY RAY RAY, what can I say Ray, okay! Since no one else seems to acknowledge it, Great to be "published", isn't it?? My scruffy layout no where near yours..in fact what they showed of yours is about the entire space of mine! and mine unfinished. SOMEDAy when I am up your way I will have to take you up on a tour offer you gave me!

Well have a great evening guys!

Congrats, Ray!

Hi Galaxy,

Really glad to hear that all went well with your Bionic implant.

You must feel like a new man with a few "hurts"  here and there.

I'll be interested in knowing how much of an improvement you will notice with your breathing, if any.  I have heard that with some fellows, with the heart working more efficiently that with less of a work load their breathing seems to improve as well.

Please keep us informed.

Chris and Jeff,

Thanks, for all you guys do and have done in fighting fires and your EMS work.

I did some EMS work years back and understand the stressors there.

We have a great society with fellows like you and Gals too now, putting it on the line to fight, rescue and keep us safe.

Glad you survived that flip Chris, that was indeed a close one.

I am raising my double RBF in a salute to you both.

I think you have two of us confused. I have heart palpitations for which I take medications to straighten out. SOME ELSE had the implant.

I DO have breathing problems. Have been asthmatic since teens. Was a smoker for years, but quit 5 years ago to "improve" my breathing. It has since gotten worse. 3 years ago I spent 2 and a half weeks in teh hospital on 4 kinds of steroids battling a bad case of pneumonia. I also had a bacterial and fungal opportunistic infections settle in. Since then, my breathing has gone down hill. It is particualrly bad when it is humid {hot or cold}, rainy, wet snowy or cold. I have gotten to teh point where I have to pause for breath now . I get winded doing my morning constitutional, or walking to the mailbox. If I bring home groceries and unload them, I haveto pause to catch my breath before I put them away. I use O2 at night only now, and as I have a good resting daytime pulseoxygen content, it may be in doubt that I get O2 for daytime use. THE real deal is HOW HARD do my lungs work to get that O2. I am at a point where I pant all the time if I do something. I have O2 at night, A CPAP machine for sleep apnea, a nebulizer and a steroidal inhaler. I have a pulmonologist for several years now, and I manage to "pass" fairly well at teh PFT Pulmonary Function Test, which one needs to fail miserably to pass for more serious breathing problems. I also pretty much have clear lungs {not wheezy all the tiem}. I have a feeling other tests will be ordered after my visti next week. I will of course keep everybody appraised.

Well, I hope everybody sleeps well tonight!
