Good Afternoon All,

Been doing errands all morning and now back in the shop. Still damp and chilly out but the rain is now only intermittent.

Ulrich - thanks for sharing those pics. If one were to model a bit of that, it would be fun to do the loop in a corner where it might actually fit. Wonder what the real radius is on that? We have a loop track in front of our museum (which is in fact the old station) and the rails that were replaced a year ago are already getting a groove worn in the inside of the outer rail from the pasanger carsscraping around the curve.

G - I thought the restraint requested by the moderators here in the diner concerned the superflous non railroad connected pics and what was once our penchant for reproducing them over and over in quotes.

Back to it in the shop.   CUL, J.R.

Just a sweet tea for now.  Then its back to house work!!

Thought I would make a quick stop.   Finished up a rust bucket for the show.  Now I move onto a hopper, and it will probably get a "light" weathering job.

Took a break from that, and I'm putting up some plastic along the house windows.   The brand from "duct tape" is GREAT!!    You get the tape, and plastic all in one kit.  We used it last year and the heat hardly came on.  The year before it was non-stop!!!   We have new windows in the house, but it still gets cold.  So....I thought I would get a head start.

 Ulrich..........Great shots.   Very nice.

 Ray......Neat looking machine!!

Afternoon folks!

Bills, bills, bills....  Just got done writing the monthly checks for the bills.  I am lucky I have enough $$$ to be able to do THAT!  I know too many people who never seem to have enough to get through the month.  I will count my blessings. Angel

Janie. I'll have a glass of the Pear Mead, please and Thank You, and be sure THAT Ulrich gets a glass as well.  YES he can, Vinnie and I had a nice friendly chat about THAT and he just thought Ulrich was underage.......  All straightened out. Smile, Wink & Grin

CUL, J.R.

JR is correct.  I remember the brewha was about posting several non RR related photos again and again and several people quoting photos in there quotes of quotes....  Good RR model or Proto are always welcome.  (And if they aren't we'll get told about it.......Whistling)

Got a bit more done today on the project.  About ready to get started on another turnout.

Later!

Afternoon/evenin' folks!

Flo I'll have the Hot roast beef sandwich with baked potato and a garden salad with blue cheese dressing.  Oh, I'll have large Dr. pepper to go with THAT.

Packers#1

Ray, sweet, I didn't knwo that Plymouth made locos as well (well, that they were the same company).

LOL, they don't and didn't.....  Completely different company.  The Plymouth loco was named after the town of Plymouth, Ohio where the company was located.  More info here.

Internet was down most of the afternoon here today.  Roadrunner must have been doing something or something went pfffft on them.  I can now get my email, but can't send through the usual server.  I will try again tonight after Deacons.  Got a bit more done on the module.  Glued down the crossing.  Still need to gauge and glue down the rails coming and going to it.  I added rails long enough to complete the section where it sets before setting it in place.  It eliminates a couple rail joiners and so should look better.

Best have my supper and get to Deacons.

Later!

Sawyer, not sure what just happened but as soon as I got to your picture, computer shut down and rebooted? I am not kidding either! Big Smile They must have done something with the power lines.

Flo, just a Beer wife made Tuna Helper. DinnerWhistling

Pretty much wasted the day away.  Don't really know how it happened and to be honest don't really care.

Tod My self, I run 10 W 40 in all my MOPAR old or fresh. I all so use Valvoline, I got in the habit when I was young because it said Racing Oil so it had to be good! Big Smile Heck the Blower Motor made 60 PSI at idle, that is a little over kill.

Train Front Model Maker (Jay) has sent me 6 fresh Athearn motors and extra parts. Thank You Jay! So I should get a few more Engines up and going. First one will be the Rio Grand SD 50 that run's but has a rod knocking. (car joke)

I hope they will fit my my old PK 2 BL 2's. The BL 2's sure look like a Athearn when taken apart!

Jeffrey are we at a crossroads?

Just an unguarded RR crossing with a yield sign of all things. They are somewhat of a joke around here. I think they should have put up 'No Parking' signs. The parish didn't put the yield signs up until a cop car got flattened at a similar crossing. The cop was out of the car at the time writing up a citation. He should have paid more attention to where he parked. Those cross bucks aren't there for decoration.

ITM has a few of those as well. Most of them are stop signs, but I've seen a Yield or two. I want a "Cross Traffic Does Not Stop" though.

J.R.- That radius is 45 m or about 135 ft. - equating to something like 20" in HO scale. As I said before, all of Switzerland is just one big model railroad!

Zoe, that mead was delicious. Mind, if I have another one, now that Vinnie knows I am not underage? I am having sleeping problems again, to a degree that I will see my doc about it.

Thank you - I hope that´ll help me to get some Zzz

Hey guys.

Managed to fix the railings on a Walthers 65' LPG tank car kit. I had ti together the way the instructions said, but they came out really flimsy and broke when I flipped the car over to adjust the trucks. Drilled some holes into the tank body (the ungluable plastic mounting brackes for the rails broke too), then bent some steel wire, and used athearn BB locomotive stanchtions to re-build them. Managed to drill the holes small enough that they all fit in tight without gluing. Looks a lot beter and is more sturdy then the wire attached to the ungluable plastic platform and stanctions. Should probably weather this one pretty good since there are some CA spots.

Todd, never heard of an "it's about time dance"

Ray where to start on that wine list? I'm 21 but haven't drank yet... (and I said I was gonnago out and do just that on my 21stHmm; but never did)

Ken, I have an athearn RS3 that's doing some rod knocking as well. sounds like something inside the motor keeps hitting the core

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Ulrich - wow that would be cool indeed. In HO, the whole loop would fit on a 4 x 4 sheet with room to spare and the grade would even be doable. Don't think Kens' 4 - 8 - 8- 4 would like it much though, in fact it might crash into itself part way through Whistling. Thanks.    J.R.

J.R. - the trains make a heck of a noise when they go through these curves. You know that squealing sound streetcars used to make when rounding a curve?

Good evening friends,

Spent today researching the local home/apartment listings for a new place to live.   I didn't get called into w*rk today...

I did, however, do something I thought I would NEVER do.  I signed up on faceb**k.   Actually have gotten back into contact with several people from my highschool years, and a couple ex-girlfriends!  Nice to finally have contact with so many long-lost friends!  My wife is calling me a traitor, due to the fact of we both said we would never use it.   But it can be a tremendously useful tool!

Well, I had better skeedattle off to dreamland!  We are going to be looking at some of those aformentioned properties tomorrow, and I would like to actually be concious for them!

Have a great night friends!

Chloe, may I please have a large RBF to go? Thanks!

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Evening all.

Just finished up homework now. And I didn't even get to study for either of my two tests tomorrow. That open house thing kinda screwed up my night...

So today was very interesting at school.

MTV was at my school filming a reality show! Well, kinda.
They're doing this new show about high school quarterbacks called "The Ride." Somehow, the producer or director (someone important), has some kind of connection to our school, but my teacher wouldn't tell us. Anyways, they're filming the intro on our field (only the intro clips, not the entire show). They had actors and cameras there all day filming the clips, and we got to go down and watch for a few minutes during my Faith and Values in the Media class. It's wierd how it looks so fake in real life, but looks really good on camera (I only know cause I watched the second take on the director's screens).

I'll have to look out for my school once the show starts!

Well, it's late, and I still have homework and studying to do in the morning, so I... Sleep

Greetings from the warm and sunny north!

Well at least it is warm for us with temps in the the  20C range or about 65F. Normally it would be 55F this time of year. We are into the 3rd week of this and it is supposed to continue for the next week. We only had one slight frost and that wasn't enough to even damage the flowers in our yard.

Interesting discussion on motor oil. Seems to me that is a topic almost like what DCC system is best. No comment on brand of oil from me but when I was a sales rep for Sunoco many years ago I had to learn all about viscosity. In my car I use 5W-30. Before that I used 10-30 in summer and 5W-20 in winter. A 10W oil is just too thick for winter starting here.  If I had to run the car a lot on the highway at high ambient temp I would use a 10W-40( Volvo recommends it).  I've seen the lab analysis on a 10W-30 and it is just too thin at high temp.to the point where it will foam.  In the early '70s Sunoco sponsored a race car and they brewed up a special oil for it that was a straight 50 weight plus viscosity index improver. Motor oil back then could be over 20% additives and the more expensive the oil the more the additives. It was the additives that made the variance between brands as there is precious little difference between the stock oil made by the various refiners.

Got through our fall market OK and there was a big announcement in that our company is being bought out by a far larger one. Great news as far as I am concerned. We are just too small to compete effectively. The new owners will run our company as a subsidiary so there shouldn't be any really major changes at least for the time being. I'm not worried about my future as it will cost them a couple years salary to get rid of me which would take me nicely to retirement. If I have to work, that is OK too.

Not much new on the RR front. I'm still working on that PK2 tank car kit. I bought some better couplers but now find that I'll have to go back to the LHS Saturday as I bought long shank instead of medium. Oh darn, another trip to Elmwood Hobbies. Sorry about that dear, but I really just don't have any choice. What's a guy to do?

Well time to say good night, so Good Night.

Evenin' Gang!

Flo I'll have a glass of the Raspberry Reflection Mead tonight to sooth me...

Been a long day and i got about half done what I needed to.  I guess THAT will just make tomorrow a bit busier.  At deacons tonight I needed a volunteer to write the Deacon's Corner (news article) for the church newsletter.  All those who were there just looked at the table top and tried to make themselves very small and invisible ("If I don't make eye contact, he won't see I'm here...).  I waited a minute, turned to our co-pastor who is the staff adviser for the Board and said, "I wonder what is so interesting on the table?"  "You know this could become a very long meeting tonight!"  She started to laugh and a few others decided to at least rejoin the discussion...  No-one seems to like THAT job, but we did finally get a lady to "volunteer"  Actually she gave a long list of why she really can't do it and why somebody else should.....  When she got done I turned to the pastor again and said, "Was THAT a yes?"  She told me it was, I thanked the lady and got on with the rest of the meeting.  Any time I have other things to get done at home, the meeting goes on and on and on.....  The great news of the evening was we cleared well over $700 for the Pastors Discretionary Fund at the Kabob Dinner.  We also had a lot of leftovers which were used by the Community Lunch Program.

Anyway got home and almost finished up the first of 3 turnouts for the module.  Managed to make several "opps" type mistakes (hope they don't show on the finished product....)  My email send hasn't been working all day.  Also didn't have any internet for a couple hours.  The server my email goes to was down.  Of course I wanted to get the flier for the Division Fall Meet out to the members with email this afternoon...  It finally came online, and the mail has been sent a few minutes ago.

CN Charlie, whereabouts are you located way up North?  I probably should know, But I don't see anything about it in you signature or your info.....  Frost already, Huh?  Hopefully we got a couple more weeks before THAT happens.  I started to clean out the garden for the year.  Got lots of Winter Squash to bring in to store.

Leaves are at their peak around here.  This photo is from Boy Scout camp last year, but it is just about what you see outside right now:

Hope you all have a pleasent evening!

Later!

Good Morning,

Robby
, I miss those days of the $15 oil change.  I don’t miss the 16 mpg of my old pick-up; I’ll keep the 28 to 32 mpg I get now, LOL.  I think I pay $75 for an oil change. 16 qt high detergent oil, 2 qt oil filter and air filter.  The air filter is $20 over the counter or at the oil change place.

I have 6 stray boxcars on the layout now: 3
Northern Pacific and 3 Santa Fe must be harvest time!

Todd, I used Quaker State for a long time because it was a “local” oil company until I had to dig the pudding from the top of the engine or the oil pan.  I agree Valvoline is tops in my book for any small engine.  I only ran Valvoline in my 302 and it’s still running at over 300,000 miles. It’s now a scrap hauling truck for a local recycling company.

If you have a diesel in cold weather stay away from the off the shelf oils; Wolf’s head viscosity “looks new” for 5,000 miles, Conoco starts to break down around 3,000 but remains in the “safe” zone until 5,000,  and Valvoline will scare the socks off of you if you pull the dipstick at 4,000 and it’s snowing outside.

Ulrich, tell Mom we said Happy Birthday! Great pictures and I like the track plan.

Good Afternoon,

it is one of those days to be better spent in bed. Lotsa Storm and Umbrella - yucch!

Janie, a bucket of coffee, please and a slice of that pumpkin pie, thank you!

I had been fiddling around a little with that track plan idea for the Swiss mountain railway, when a crazy idea struck my head - why look for a managerial job with no result, why not look for something else, something more "railroady"? A Swiss friend of mine had told me, that there is a shortage of loco engineers in Switzerland, so I spent all morning searching the web for info on how to become an engineer. Wouldn´t it be fun to drive a 1:1 train on one of those spectacular lines instead of only modeling one?

I would have to overcome two big obstacles, though. # 1 is age - I am 54, not 40 anymore. # 2 is I am German, not Swiss and aside from my native German tongue, I only speak a little English, no French or Italian or Rhaeto-Romanic (that´s an own language in the Canton Engadina - a mix of Italian, German and a sore throat).

Despite those obstacles, I will give it a try - all they can say is a no!

Lee - my Mom´s birthday is yet to come. It is on the 17th. Petra finally found buckwheat flour, so my Mom will get a very special Cake this year.

Speaking of engine oils, all our "modern" motors require that 5 W 50 high performance synthetic stuff, which is sold at a mere $ 76 a gallon - ouch! An oil change runs up to $ 200, not really a bargain.

CUL, folks!

Good Morning! Haaaappy Oct 7th! Sorry no time for cards.

“Tis a beautiful day out Sunny with a high around 77.

Slow going yesterday but the trim around the door looks gooder than I thought it should so……, I’m happy. Very happy. With a door and a window and a fireplace on one wall and on the opposite wall  two doorways in that room, there is not a section of wall that is square to another so I had to play a happy medium. Unfortunately that meant one wall, or more accurately one section of wall, would have to pay dearly. So I picked, for viewing reasons, the short wall with the outside door. It should look more out, way more out, than it does. Counting this as a giant stroke of luck. I’m winning the battle of the floor.

Lee- We have Wolf’s Head in this area, but it’s not largely popular so about the only thing I can easily find is at the Big R farm store and in only straight 30. They may have picked up a few more weights since the last time I was there. For diesels, I’m fond of Rotella, Why? Don’t know, just what we used mostly at work. Good stuff.  I switch back and forth on my mowers between Rotella, Valvoline, and Wolf’s Head. Which ever is cheaper that day. They are the three least expensive brands, believe it or not, on the shelf at Big R. I usually don’t buy 30w in the case. Just a couple bottles at a time.

Vincent-  LaughIt’s just an expression I use. Like the “Happy Dance” Where you dance around in joy for whatever reason. I just use the “whatever reason” as part of the name of teh dance.

Sawyer- I’d send all the Packers stuff back. Apparently you didn’t notice, but all the lettering got put on backwards!

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Good morning, Chloe.  Coffee and cinnamon roll, please.  I didn't make it in yesterday.  On Wednesdays after work, I climb until 9:00 at the local rockgym.  It is good exercise because it trashes the entire body.

When it gets daylight, I plan to fill the woodshed with what we cut last weekend.  Today is our last day before the rain starts again.

Garry,  Yes, we run the 2-8-8-2 regularly.  We started a new schedule to run all of the locos so they stay reliable.

When we were at the big layout in Greeley, CO, this summer, one of the operators took us back to their giant staging yard.  They have a schedule for loco maintainence and operation.  Very impressive.

Ray,  I think that the Earle Estates Pear Mead sounds yummy.

Lee, If you are modeling winter, do you put light snow on your trees, or are the deciduous bare?  I plan to check out the cutter when I head into town today.  Sounds like you have as much sissor touchup as I do with the squares.

Robby P,  Sounds like I am going to get the airbrush out.  The cleanup  makes me dread it so I have done most everything by hand.  I do enjoy your photos. Thanks.

Ken,  I will throw in some home canned albacore for that next tuna cassarole.

Later,   Sue

Todd, I’ve used the Rotella without any problems, but it costs more than the Wolf’s Head out here (I have to go to Wal-Mart to get Rotella).  I don’t buy a case either, just the gallon jugs.

Sue, I will be referring to some local pictures for the snow on the pines and I’ll post a few pictures when I get done.  If the weather is good I want to finish my backdrop project before I move into tree building, but I think I’ll have the “tree box” in front of me while I’m watching the TV.

Sue........Air-brush cleaning isn't that bad.   I was also scared at first, but once you do it a couple of times.....Its easy to do.   Sometimes on the weathering side of the hobby you have to use the air-brush on certain things.

Well here's a boxcar that was going to go to the train show, but I thought I would put it on "the bay", and see what happens.  Plus if it sells for what I have it at, well I could get about three to four more cars.  Not a bad deal !!!

Lee,  Sounds like a good use of time.  I sew in front of the TV ( usually movies ).  The trees are in the layout room.  I plan to cut some squares this morning.  I paint the bamboo skewers railroad tie brown.  In fact, I use railroad tie brown for lots of things.

Just curious, why do you need good weather for backdrop painting?
