Well today I came to a decision. Last month I took my van to an oil change shop in town, a shop that I had stopped doing business with some years ago I might add. I took it there only because my nephew had told me the place has changed. Well I took it there and right away they're telling me I should put a heavier grade oil in it because of the age of the engine. Now everything I know about oil viscosity was telling me not to but they convinced me otherwise. Who knows, maybe they knew something I didn't know. So I proceeded on the assumption they knew what they were talking about. Turned out they didn't. They drained out the 10-30 that was in it and replaced it with 10-40. Well, ever since then the tappets have been clattering at low speed. I mean they clattered before but nowhere near as loud. I tried thinning the oil down but I couldn't thin it enough. So today I drained out the 10-40 and replaced it with new fresh 10-30. The engine sounds much better. The clatter is still there but is more subdued as it was before (that's to be expected from a 30 year old engine that's seen quite a few years of abuse by a bunch of beer drinking, pill popping kids) I took the van to that galloping band of idiots. One thing for sure, I won't be taking my business back there again. There are 2 other oil change places in town that have much better reputations.

Jeff..........At least you fixed it before it got worse.   You have to be careful about the oil changing places.   A few years ago someone I knew had a oil changing place do it.......Well they didn't put the oil filter back on, and his engine was destroyed!!!   I think he only got a few miles or so.   I don't trust those places either.  They only time I go is when its VERY cold out, and/or snow!!

 galaxy:

I Hope NERM is happy with teh Finger Lakes Wine list and has tried some UNLESS he has a problem in that area. DOn't want to encourage those with problems.

Now I know it's all domestic.

No thanks, not for me. I'm only 16, under the legal age for alcohol consumption.

I'll buy it for you, but you have to use your own ID to get the stuff.

EDIT: I just realized I'm not at the top of a page no more. Disregard the above, and go back to your normal programing)

Sorry NERM, did not realize you are underage...so if effect, you do have a problem in that area, just not an alcoholic or anything! Wink

I, unfortunately, am old enough not to need ID as the gray shows too much! BUt I will produce my ID so as you don't get into trouble. As long as they don't think I am purchasing it for you I'll be ok. Besides here you just pick up the tabs at teh door on your bill on your way out for everyone who comes in...you need not be present for every diner having dinner!Dinner

I see we should also be responsible when we order on your tab as you probably don't have much cash and don't have a "Credit Card" to "warm up either".

It's all in fun. though, and yes, I will resume regular programming. On the same channel...just as soon as that darned "weekly emergency broadcast system test" is over.....

Jeffrey- you got to watch those oil change places some don''t even change the oil all the way either.Periodically I change places just to hopefully aoid that issue. I have also been tried to be talked into the new super cleaner high mileage oils that I refuse to pay the extra for. I've heard tell they really are not necessarily better for an older engine and I was recetnly advised taht that 49K miles on the 4 year old KIA is "Higher mileage"! "Bosh" I said! Talk to me when I've got over a hundred and fifty adn I'll consider teh higher price "high mileage oil". USed to could change my own, but now to hard to crawl around under and do it, rather let them do it on a lift. SOmetime I stand by the garage doors to watch them do it so I know it got done!

SUE- good to see you here and not just in the beer barn Welcome ! You can have a Beer here with the guys just watch out for those young'uns! Right now the special is the FInger Lake Region UPstate NY State wines that Howmus RAY is recommending. FIne stuff I tell you, especially the Honey Mead if you like it.

Todd- "I need an appliance mover." I could use an appliance mover too...need to clean behind them all with my new steam mop...WHat's his name and does he have a strong back? {LOL} Big Lots around here had them for sale for {the mechanical dolly ones that is not the human ones} for around $80.00. I kept thinking i should get one but don't know how often I'd use it and now with my bad back, I can't lift myself off the couch well let alone an appliance. When we DO buy a MMR space witha  house covering it I paln to Hire strong young men to move us! {If i can find any...watch them all be old men with backs as bad as mine...but it's hard to carry something with a cane in your hand too}.

Speaking of RAY- that looks like a fine general station you posted. Glad to see it being used for more than storage.

ROBBY P. Taking care of your teeth may be no fun, but doing so will hopefully last you a lifetiem. Prompt restoration is crucial.  My father had {still has} good teeth and my mother had bad teeth. I inherited BOTH sides. AS I get older my teeth are going south no matter how well I take care of them and have them cleaned by Hygenist every 3 months. I have a new partial for uppers now and I would trade your discomfort today for a natural tooth in my mouth any day!!! FOrtunately my Medicaid covers all my dental work and I have a very good Dentist who treats me well for what Medicaid doesn't. {who else would do two root canals and two crowns basically pro bono- for free?}

Well the trip to the General Surgeon was a waste. FIrst thing was he thought I had a lesion on my back to be removed someone got wires crossed THERE. {It's about necrotic {dead} tissue in my lumbar region we are talking about removing} Secondly, he didn't have the MRI results or anything to look at to tell him what is going on with my case so I have to go back next tuesday to find out what's what. I shoulda asked if they were going to charge my insurance for an essentially wasted visit...probably so cuz the Dr. did see me. SHoulda complained maybe? It's actually teh neurosurgeon's office's fault that the results did not get properly sent and not the general Surgeon's lack of info...but the gen, surgeon;s computer system has been down for 2 days so they could not retrieve teh data electronically THAT is their fault! Bummer in the Storm no less.

SPeaking of Storm posta Storm the next 3 days i think. Ray's got rain, I got rain, Robby got's rain we all got rain but unlike the midwest where temps were at or near freezing we just have had really cool temps, just enough to kick on the furnace a few times. I hate running the furnace until about mid-NOV, then like to stop at teh end of March. DOesn' always work out taht way though. AN Umbrella is cumbersome to carry when you have a cane and other stuff to carry as well. Thank goodness I have a "man purse"- actually its a small compartmentalized travel bag to carry things like medical records and medications and all the other crap I carry in. May seem silly, but I like it and don't care if it makes me looka  bit stupid. Anybody got an aspirin? I do in my bag. WHen I need my inhaler for asthma..its in there so is everything else in my life that's important. I'm none to proud to carry one.

well that should be enough for this afternoon as I have bored you to tears I am sure!

Have a great evening...

Evening All,

Getting ready to head off to the rail museum so just a coffee to go please.

Jeff - I would have offered you the same advice as the oil change place figuring the heavy oil (it's all relative when it's warm anyway) would quiet the motor not make it worse. Most likely it's full of varnish from being rode hard and put up wet. Long ago I had a Camaro just like that and eventually most of the clattering valve gear went away after a few months and a couple of regular oil changes finally disolved enough of the crud to let oil go where it was supposed to. On the other hand, if you don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling from dealing with them, I'd say you're correct in taking your trade elsewhere.

Galaxy - Hate it when the trip is a waste of time - especially with the copay we carry on the visits. It's the only way we could afford the medical insurance at all.

Sue - good to see you back around (when do we get pics of the new aggro trees?)

Wolfgang - welcome - I really admire the w..k you've posted. Your street running is magnificent.

   Catch Y'all Later,   J.R.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, bucket of coffee, to-go. Gotta go up to the fire station in a few, gotta wash trucks for the North Cedar Knights homecoming parade tomorrow. Also gotta try and contact a "lead" for a story, see if he's ready for a business feature yet or not.

GALAXY: Sorry to hear about the wasted trip. I have a strong hunch (hmmmmmm, the soap box just fired up) such problems are gonna get more and more common in the not-so-distant future. 'Nuff said (soapbox just shut itself off). As for the "man purse," probably the best one out there is the "man bag" Jack Bauer carried in "24." Heck, the younger crowd probably thinks you're a hip dude walkin' around with your laptop...

WOLFGANG: Welcome as well! And yup, you've shown some remarkable stuff...Thumbs UpThumbs Up

The bucket is ready to go...so out the door go I.

Evening Flo, I take a Big Boy Sub, Toasted White Bread with everything but Mayo, Tend of Onion Rings and a Beer please.

Jeffery If I remember correctly your van has only 75,000 on it right? As a general rule, upping the viscosity of the oil will increase the oil pressure which may reduces lifter noise on worn engines. I would not be that hard on them about it, I might have suggested the same thing if you had complained about lifer chatter.

Well did not do much today. Was pretty tired this mourning so I pretty much napped till around 2:00 PM. Went to Lowe's and got a refund on the paint and bought the need supplies to finish the hallway. All so bought some new baseboard. I painted a old section and it looks God awful! I think my wife has a Battering Ram on the vacuum cleaner! Big Smile Looks like she took a Claw Hammer to it.

Started looking at the next project, doing the Family Room Floor. Picked up some samples of Peeling and Stick simulated hard wood flooring. It had better reviews on the Lowe's web site than the real Hardwood. I did not realizes how big the family room was till I did a projected budget. It is 201 square fee, if I use Luna cost will be $269.00.

On the Train Front.  Ran the Y 6 b through the new number 4 turnouts, did not like them at all! But it is used for coal drag's and they don't go to the passenger station anyhow.

Time to sip some Beer and watch the trains go around and a round. Big Smile Sometimes it good to be Cuda Ken!

Absolutely rediculously amount of homework tonight. Have everything for tomorrow done. But I'm doing tours at my school's open house tomorrow night, and I have a huge english assignment and a physics lab due for Thursday, so I need to try and get ahead.

I'll be in the back corner drowning in a sea of books...

Good evening, Chloe.  Sorry I missed the BBQ earlier.  Galaxy and Ray recommend the Honey Mead, so I will try that.

You guys are so busy here that if I miss a couple of  days many pages have gone by.

Robby P,  I have a turquoise GN box car that I thought would be a good one to start on.  A couple of years ago I tried a NP caboose.  I used many coats of india ink.

JR,  It will be awhile before I have any finished trees.  I plan to get about 20 ready before I hit the ground foam.  Are you still racing?  When does the season start?

Has anyone seen Dick (grayfox) or Ryan lately?  Ryan was always jazzing up the menu.

When I got rid of my Century last month it had 350,000 miles on it and the engine was still tight. It didn't leak, it didn't burn any oil and it didn't lose any. The only thing wrong with the engine was the injector control assembly and the crankshaft sensor were shot but it still ran good regardless. I got rid of it because the fuel pump was shot and the body was tearing apart underneath. The only oil I ever used in it for the 10 years I had it was Pennzoil 10-30. It had only 50,000 miles on it when I got it. I drove it over 1,000 miles a week for the first 2 years I had it and most of that was on dirt roads, in heavy mud, across pastures and sometimes on wooded trails if the situation called for it. That car was a tough brute and took it as fast as I could dish it out. During all that time I only got it stuck twice.

Hello everybody ..

Sue ... I've had contact by email with Ryan and Dick. They stop in the diner once in a long while. Rgearding DCC, my only NP loco converted so far is the Proto/ Heritage 0-8-0, and it is really nice to operate. Do you and Larry run the 2-8-8-2 much lately? ...

Jeff ... I can understand taking your business elsewhere. I had my truck in to
"Mr. Goodwrench" a few months ago, and they screwed up the hydraulic fluid. I lost my power steering and brakes. Needed a towing back to Mr. Goodwrench. I should have gone along because I went to pick up the truck on the following day and was told there was nothing wrong when the truck arrived there. They say they did not have to pay for towing. I will not go back. I would think a dealer would want to eventually be selling a vehicle in the future but I can see that's not so.

I think the biggest problem is that the oil pump couldn't efficiently pump the thicker oil to everywhere it had to be except at higher engine speeds. Keep in mind that I did say the engine was abused before I got the van. It was run through mud, run at high rpm's for extended periods, run hot and was generally punished. Probably the only thing that kept it going is that the 318 is a tough engine but even it has it's limits. The easy manner in which I drive it is probably the first break it's had in years.

Evenin' folks!

Flo I'll have a glass of Earl Estates Blueberry Bounty tonight.....  Oh yes, by special request we have added some Gold Medal winning Mead from Earl Estates Meadery on Seneca Lake a few miles East of Penn Yan, NY.  Here are some ones you might like:

Semi Sweet Honey Mead - Gold Medal 2010 NYS Wine and Food Classic.

Autumn Harvest - Gold and a Bronze 2010 NYS Wine and Food Classic.

Earle Estates Pear Mead - Double Gold Medal 2010 NYS Wine and Food Classic.

Raspberry Reflection - Best in Class NYS Fair 2010.

Cherry Charisma - Gold and Silver Medals, Indiana State Fair 2009

My personal favorite is Blueberry Bounty even though it was only a Bronze medal winner at the NYS Wine and Food Classic this year.

http://www.meadery.com/award_mead.php  Enjoy!

Got a bit more done on the Diorama/module today.  I was going to add individual tieplates on each tie, but i find I really would need to buy a jig to get them extactly in the right place to have the rails spced correctly, and I only have 2 and a half weeks to finish it.  Hopefully it will get enough points for the Merit Award without them.  I will be adding rail joints....

Hope you all have a great evening!

GOOD MORNING ALL!

WEll today's plate has my other half's physical and blood work, breakfast out afterward.

We have to drop off the Kia Sedona as the power steering is still loosing fluid. so THey either didn't fix it right {under warrantee} or the low pressure hose is leaking too. Or something else is leaking. If the steering rack is leaking like the Caravan did, I hope it does it well enough that they do it under warrantee as It was expensive.

WE are going to look at a potential MMR space with a house over it. A 2 br 1 ba ranch. It has only partial basement so I don't give much hope for a lot of space. WE want a ranch for one level living for when we get older and no stairs. WE living in a trailer now so everything on  one level and we have seen my MIL suffer a stroke and difficulty with stairs, and my mother wheechair bound with MS i a ranch. we want a  ranch thank you. Especially the way my back is going south.

TOo early for RAY's vino, but I will have some later. Not sure which but his Blueberry Bounty sounds good. Will wait to noon and have with lunch.

WEll everyone have a great day!

Good Morning,

Sue
, I guess they look ok since the local club talked me out of most of the trees I built last spring.  I waste a lot of filter material when I cut the filters so the hole cutter lets me cut the exact circle size I want.  After I glue the filter rings on then trim them up with a small pair of sharp scissors.  A friend of mine makes ground foam from scratch.  Our trees up here; white pine is native due to the large amount of brown and blue clay. Blue spruce is scattered but easy to find.  I hope to pick up a batch of blue spruce tonight.  I like using the bamboo skewers for the trunks; easy to stain and already has the grooves in the trunk.  I need about 50 for my coal mine area.  I’m doing a winter scene and a large group of these pines will be used as a visual divider between the seasons.

Ulrich, I’m just catching up on posts; sorry about your friend.  Thought and prayers to you and his family.

Jeff, yea it’s hard to find a good oil change place, but when I do I don’t switch until they go out of business.  I’m running Wolf’s head in my diesel engine and love it.

Robby, I’m stuck going to an oil change place; I just don’t have the means to dispose of 16 quarts of oil every 5,000 miles.  I will say the cost is almost the same if I do it myself since they get a discount on their oil, oil filters, and air filters when they buy in bulk.

Tonight is the Euclid MRR club work night and Friday is the NMRA DIV 4 meeting.

Here it's 1:30 pm we had a dry walk with the dog, no rain. Smile

One week to the 20 years Netherlands FREMO meeting in Zuidbroek. There will be a hall with 6.000 square meter (about 64.000 square feet) for the layouts! Crowded!

Remember, FREMO meetings are not shows, only for members and guests.

Good morning.  Another rainy day, at least its not snow.  That would be at least 3-4 days worth now!!

Lets see..........I'm working on a "rust bucket" in the basement for the train show, and a area of the layout I would like to tear out.  I'm leaving that idea till later in the year.    Other than that, not much planned.

Sue........If you have some powders (or artist chalks), just mix some colors close to the GN car....That will tone it down.   I've never tried the "ink" way.    I use my air-brush for the fading, and the weathering chalks for the rest.

Lee.......I can change the oil for about $15, and the oil changing places around here are $30+ !!

I all so need to get off my dead butt and get the gas space heater going, it is starting to get cold out here in the Train Room / Garage.

 See you all for lunch.

Good Morning! Coffee to go please. Thanks

In a hurry this morn to get a bunch done before the inevitable distraction causes a work stoppage. Again.

Got the dolly yesterday after a big fee-asko. Lowe’s raised the price $9.00 by the time I got to the front of the store with theirs. Needles to say I had them place it back where I got it and I went across the street to Menard’s and purchased the exact same dolly for $11.00 less.

Jeff- I don't cater to the "add a thicker oil" idea though it is a very common practice but I don't object to those who do because it does have it's valid arguements and that is what I was tought many moons ago in school.. Even some of the best mechanics would have suggested it. However, I do understand your reaction based on your past experience with the place and the bad reputation some oil change places have. Chrysler products prefer 10w30. That is what I use year round in all my vehicles. Some have suggested going to 5w30 in the winter for easier starting. I look at them and smile saying I'm too lazy to change the oil just to change it. Personally, if it wre my vehicle, and some may cringe, since you had to change oil anyway I'd have pulled a quart out and run a quart of transmission fluid in it. Then after the oil change, put some Seafoam brand stuff in there. It's an additive that is used in so many things from fuel to oil to who knows what that I really don't know hat it's classified as. Try it. It sure can't hurt. Many Farm and Home type stores carry it if the auto stores don't.

Lee- I like Wolfs Head too. I use it in my compressor.  I use Valvoline for the vehicles. Why? Don't know. Always have and have no build up problems nor problems of any kind. Dad on the other hand loved Pennzoil. Talk about a mess on the inside of an engine. Used to be when I'd pop a valve cover and see the ooky gook I'd say to the owner, "Let me guess, Pennzoil or Quaker State" They'd look at me and say one or the other and ask how I knew. Explanation would followed.

I just skimmed the posts so I hope I haven’t missed anything real important. But I have gotta get going. As usual I’m running late. Probably would have been outta here sooner if I hadn’t typed that last comment. Or one. Or THAT one for that matter. THAT one either. Oh for Pete’s sake I’m leaving. That was a waste of time as I already said that. Yeesh, I’m ou……(Vinnie steps in and throws babbling idiot out the door)

Good Afternoon,

Zoe, a strong coffee and a bagel, please.

Went shopping with Petra, only to find out that we cannot get what we were looking for. We will be going to see my parents on my mother´s 82nd birthday and want to take a special birthday cake along. Would you believe, that in a town of 25,000 people you can´t get buckwheat flour? Petra is referring back to her recipe books to find an alternative.

I did some fiddling around with that track plan idea, just to complete it.

The station´s track plan is an exact copy of the prototype, I had to compress the length a little, though. It is basically station to fiddle yard design, to be built in modules. Maybe one fine day...

Just to give you an idea of the location, here are some pics:

The station building

Looking west

Leaving the station

En route to Ospizio Bernina

Finally, the ne generation EMU´s in service at the RhB. Remember, this is narrow gauge!

How´s that for a sharp curve?

... finally, would you build a viaduct like this on your layout?

Hope, you all have a good day!

Good morning. It's 50 and sunny. The high will be 82 and it will be sunny.

Woke up this morning to no water. There's a break in the line and no one seems to know when it will be fixed. So for now I'm getting by with a couple of gallons of distilled water. Had dinner with the parents last night. Pork chops, rice with cheddar cheese and broccoli, potato salad, steamed cabbage and cornbread. Later today I'll be out picking up some things in the yard. I've been putting it off until I could get a day when my back wasn't screaming at me and it looks like today is that day.

Goog morning ...

Ulrich .... Thanks for the Swiss Railway photos ... I'm impressed! ... I like all of the pictures, but the last one is a favorite. I like how the track loops and crosses over itself. ... That reminds me of the Canadian Pacific Spiral Tunnels in teh Rockies.

"Working on the Railroad" report: ... I have accumulated a Walthers heavyweight passenger train from buying one car at a time with the Walthers monthly flyer sale prices. Now I am placing the train in service. These cars are not quite ready to roll as advertised. Trucks were not free rolling, and so I used LaBelle teflon powder to lubricate. Worked very well. Axles spin around in the side frames as they should now. Next, I changed the couplers. I removed the coupler mounts which are intended to swing back and forth. They were too much trouble. I replaced them with Kadee long shank couplers (either #16 or #46). I mounted them so diaphragms are close to each other but will not rub together on curve track or crossover switches. .... Results are great. I can run the train at top speed in forward or reverse the entire distance (over 100 feet)  of my mainline with curves and grades.

The consist of my Burlington heavyweight passenegr train is now Athearn baggage (my paint and decals and body mounted Kadee couplers.) and an IHC baggage/RPO ( my paint and decals and body mounted Kadee couplers, Trucks replaced with high quality.).... Then there are 6 Walthers cars (coach, coach, diner, sleeper, sleeper, solarium observation.)  .... I have 2 more Walthers cars, but the train is long enough with 8 cars..... The locomotive is a Bachmann Spectrum Heavy Mountain that I lettered for CB&Q.  .... Of course, I do not pay full retail prices for any of the train. I love model train bargains!

Mornin' everyone!

I am up and about.....  Or as they say "sitting up and taking nourishment".  So, with THAT in mind I'll have short stack of Buckwheat Pancakes and a mug of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug to start the day.  Yes Zoe, I know it is almost noon....  Already done half a days w*rk before breakfast!

Oh look!  We keep talking about Dodges in here, how about a Plymouth? This may be the oldest surviving Plymouth Locomotive.

I have a couple odds and ends to finish around here and the Deacons Meeting tonight, but most of the day is reserved for trains!  Hope to have at least one #6 turnouit completed by late afternoon.

Ulrich, beautiful photos!  I like the track plan!

Jeffrey are we at a crossroads?

Later!

I see the spacing issue is still at it this morning.....GrumpySigh

Jeffrey are we at a crossroads?

Just an unguarded RR crossing with a yield sign of all things. They are somewhat of a joke around here. I think they should have put up 'No Parking' signs. The parish didn't put the yield signs up until a cop car got flattened at a similar crossing. The cop was out of the car at the time writing up a citation. He should have paid more attention to where he parked. Those cross bucks aren't there for decoration.

Ulrich-

My other half really enjoyed the pics! Having a mother who is German, my other half grew up spending every other year summers in Germany and misses the older steamers they still ran in some spots, and the diesels and electrics over there from childhood.

We have some european N scale stuff, but hard to find here in USA and exhorbitant prices to import from Europe.

My other half is coming around to certain USA locos and cars though!

***Keep in mind for all posters though...that the moderators really only like one pic per posting here in the diner at most as the diner already eats up space. Other Diners have been told by the moderators to actually stop posting Pics {where has Ryan Beaudreaux been lately? he got yelled at}. So lets try to keep pics in the diner thread to a minimum. You can create a whole new thread to post several pics, or post in WPF, but the diner grows so big with just words only that they like to limit the number of pics here.

Went to Kia dealer they say there is nothing wrong with the steering but it is loosing fluid somewhere, I know the level keps dropping and power steering fluid doesn't evaporate. They are also going to fix both front seatbelt return mechanisms as they barely retract at all and that will be done under warrantee too. I like having warrantee! Especially bumper-to-bumper.

Dumped the drainage gravel in the driveway 10 bags didn't go far,so we will have to go get some more before they run out as they may not replace them in stock until next season?

Still got the problem with teh "smushed paragraphs" making all posts into one big paragraph I see, hope they fix it soon!

WEll I will go for now

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Well, as the sun is slowly setting in my neck of the woods, I thought I´d give the wines Ray mentioned a try. There are not being served here? No, Flo, that just can´t be - I overheard a conversation between Ray and Vinnie the other day and I know Vinnie bought quite a few bottles. Only for special guest? Listen, dear, I came all the way from Hamburg, had to take a flight via Frankfurt to New York, hitchhiked hours up to this place and I am no special guest?

(as Vinnie starts to rise from his booth) - OK, Ok, I settle for a RBF instead, and some Chili dogs to go with it.

Ray - actually, the plan is dang simple, but with a lot of prototype operation potential. Need to save up money (how?) to be able to get going on this

Garry - that line is my favorite line in Switzerland. Hard to believe that there is a train every hour in each direction!
