Vincent, I love both GEs and EMDs, each has a unique look. To the steam heads they might be powered boxcars, but there's so many different styles it's basically like steam with the suttle differences even int he different runs of locos.

Robby, there's so many hoppers around Aiken County, I just gotta follow the NS lines on the roads and there's some spotted, here, there, everywhere. That's the second BN or BNSF hopper I've seen downtown though, it's a nice oddity in the midst of all the weathered to heck hoppers of the South Cool

well, not much for today. my green and gold packers play the red and gold redskins. man I wish I ahd Directv Sunday Ticket. oh well.

Hopefully later my dad and I will at least get the new radio in, the speakers can wait till next weekend if they must.

Well, looks like I got top, eat up folks. For myself I'll take some bacon and a xl Mello yellow. the fall weather change got to me last night, now my sinuses are draining into the back of my throat.

Anyone missing two pugs? Not engines but dogs? We have a beige pug and another all black pug outside now. Anyone want to claim?

edit-never mind, found the owners.

Whistling

Good Afternoon Guys,

and a Happy Columbus Day week-end to all south of the 49th.   Happy Thanksgiving day week-end to all of my fellow Countrymen and Gals.

I haven't posted for awhile as there hasn't been much activity with the LM&E lately.  I have received two GP-30s and a SD-45 that will be either patched or painted for the LM&E. These units look good and are brand new Spectrums and the three of them were grabbed seperately on the Bay but in total I only have $100.00 in them.  That makes me smile.  I have had excellent luck with my other Spectrums.

Ulrich & Petra,  sometimes it seems there is no end to the struggle a person finds themselves in. However in most cases perseverance pays off and eventually your situation improves and you really get to appreciate the blessing that comes. You are in a lot of prayers on this side of the pond and your names is in several Chapel cars over here as well.  We are all pulling for you to find your health and employment problems are solved.  Keep the faith and hang on.................. it will happen.

Jeff,  you have to tell me about those bone spurs.  Do they come out like yours did for other people as well or is this something to do with your condition ??  Good luck with the improvements to your layout, but don't over do it with the foot right now.

There sure seems to be a lot of renovations going on right now. Floors, cabinets, rooms and additions. Makes one wonder where a person finds time to post here.  I been busy with yard work and eavesthoughs on a rental house the last while, so that has been keeping me from the layout.

Sure would like to hear more word from our missing in action.  "Fergie"  "OJ Ed"  " Cajun Ryan", and all others who haven't posted in a while.  I think it is almost a year since Fergie spoke up.

Just got home from Church and we are going to the Sister-in-laws for Thankgiving Dinner tonight.  That is about 15 miles east of where we live, it is going to be a small reunion as there are other there from much further.  Will be really good for my wife and her Family..  I'll probably watch some NFL and stay out of a lot of the discussions.

I last worked a seven days stretch and now I am on four days off.  I am loving it. Holiday again tomorrow and then back at it.. Will be very busy now through until New Years.

Hope all are well or improving.          " Happy Rails to you, until we meet again"  Isn't that what Roy Rogers used to say???     Wink

Keep smiling ya all, ..........................It looks good on ya.  Big Smile

Johnboy out.......................for now

*grumble grumble grumble* goooooooooooooooooooooooood (brackin-frackin-frickin' frack) evening...

Well, the weekend is just about done, haven't accomplished much other than w**k stuff. Did manage to stimulate the Cedar Rapids economy by spending some money at Menard's: picked up mortar for the foundation (annual tuck-pointing operation), an oil-filled space heater (warm, without moving parts), and then forced myself to pick up enough lumber for the South run in the RR room. Then proceeded to spend most of the afternoon at Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca (Iowa District East Camp) for a fundraiser event to cover for THAT Editor.

For reasons as yet unknown, I've been in a foul mood all week. Thus, I'm trying really, really hard to be mindful and careful what I say around here...

Which reminds me, LEE: the rant I self-censored wouldn't have been directed at you...but Ray LaHood and progressives on the left... 'nuff said. Maybe more than 'nuff...

SAWYER: Good pics of the GE and the hoppers. When the CNW started buying GE's (C40-8), I hated 'em...didn't like 'em at all. Never really took a liking to the AC44-9's or the AC4400's either. Then, the BORG (UP) took over. First, they got rid of all my beloved SD40-2's, but kept the GE fleet around. Then, they got rid of the C40-8's, and repainted most of the others...which I could only tell apart by the numbers on them. Now, CN has bought-up a bunch of the ex-CNW C40-8's...and I'm actually thrilled to see them.

"Don't know what you've got...'till it's gone..."

ROBBY P: Belated (as usual), but NICE w**k on THAT latest boxcar! Congrats on getting the LHS to push your stuff too.

TODD: Ya might've mixed me up with CUDA KEN or somebody else the other day, about THAT deceased miter saw. If'n I was in your shoes...well, first you'd probably wonder what in the heck I was doing in them, but second...I too woulda gone with DeWalt or somebody other than what they've got at Harbor 'O Freight. I've gotten some minor stuff there, like some hand tools and THAT airbrush...but for a power tool I'd be using a lot...I'd go with the bigger brands over "Chicago Electric," "Phillidelphia Power Tool," etc. For an occassional user...sure, wouldn't have a problem with Harbor's stuff. On the rare times I go into Harbor 'O Freight "you get what you pay for" rings in my head...

Now, THAT airbrush...it's gold. It's..."beast." The only troubles I've had with it have been from my own incompetence/ignorance/asininity, idocracy, and dumb-azzzzzzzzedness.

A tip of the reporter/photographer's fedora to SUE...nice to see you back in here.

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends.

Happy Columbus Day (tomorrow) to us Americans.

I was gonna go take a seat in the back, but from the coughing/hacking/gagging, etc. going on back there...I think I'll grab a seat at the RC instead...

Evenin' folks!

Flo I'll have the soup and sandwich special and a large lemonade tonight.

Benn a busy day out at the Museum...  THAT was what all the crowds were outside the diner.  Had a few hundred visitors today.  Even busier than Diesel Days earlier in the the year.  Just got home an hour or so ago, and I can say I will not be moving fast tomorrow........ (Insert pain smiley here)

had a lot of first timers at the museum today and so quite a few people wandering into places clearly roped off limits and walking across the tracks as the train was coming in.  The high point was a question a man asked me on the last trip up the hill.....  I decided I deserved to get a train ride for all my hard w*rk as Docent, and so was assigned as Car Host for the last trip (the car host had to leave a trip earlier).  The guy wanted to know if the caboose we were in (A PC transfer caboose) was the same as the ones used on AMTRACK.........  Took all my sterngth to calmly tell him THAT Amtrack doesn't have cabooses and most freight trains don't use them anymore.......... Laugh   It is a lot of fun out there as you never know what you will be asked......

Flo for desert, how about a glass of Blueberry Bounty Mead....  Thank you my dear!

Have a couple things I need to accomplish yet tonight and before I fall Zzz

 After Noon Folks

Flo, BBQ Ribs, Tender of Slaw and a Bucket of Ice Cold Beer and a frosted Monon Mug.

Jeffery I sure got a Hoo T out of the pictures!  In fact they where Bewitching! Big SmileDevil Did you photo shop them, or is it for real? Either Way good job! By the way, have you tried the Pin Strip (I know it should be Stripe) yet?

Tod the Tool Man  So you can only make Miter cuts and Straight cuts with a miter saw? Boy that would have been handy when I was building the layout. Can you do miter cuts with a table saw? By the way, congratulation on winning the Kitchen / Family Room Battle. Thumbs Up

Cabinet Wars, Boy I am beat. As I said I have a big kitchen with lots of cabinets. (all filled with Sues junk. Would you believe we have 4 crock pots?) Today I started prepping the doors and draws, I pulled 12 cabinets doors and 4 drawers faces and started stripping them to bare wood. Now, I am not with out air tools for sanding. I have a 10 HP compressor with a 100 gallon tank, air files and DA's. I was guessing it would take me 2 to 3 hours to strip the old latex paint. I started with 150 grit on a air file, 150 grit gummed up right away, Rats, I have plenty of it, but it is a closed grit so gummed up quick.

So I broke out the DA with 120 open grit paper and finished with 320 git. It took me 7 HOURS to strip them to bare wood! Confused I was stunned it took that long with need Beer and train breaks! Guessing about a hour for the breaks.  I still have 12 more doors and 4 more drawers, not counting the face of the cabinets.

Heck, I stripped this 68 Charger in 18 hours!

But, everybody knows MOPAR is quicker, right Tod! Big Smile

Hello Diners: Our Thanksgiving weekend here - we did the turkey thing this lunchtime, and do it over with a salmon tomorrow with our New Glasgow friends.  Friday and Saturday at our daughter's home we removed stuff left behind by a tenant this summer. It took 4 pickup truck loads (not crew cab either)  THAT's all att he dump now. What a mess - but at least one can see the floor in the basement again.  On the mrr front have been running trains, and paired six locos into consists. Apart from looking nice, it clears space on the NCE PowerHouse Pro cab. The major drawback of the NCE DCC system is that it has space for only 6 locos or consists in its recall memory Thumbs Down  Easy to program, and set up consists, but the short list memory is a pain.Angry  I've lost the url to the NMRA site that tells the correct weight / length for cars. I've two passenger cars that keep derailing, and it's not the trackwork - judging by the fact everything else including other passenger cars I have weighted goes through the turnouts in question with no hiccups. So, I'm figuring they are too light - but don't know what they should be. Anyone feel like saving me the trouble of searching for that site? Ta ever-so!Big Smile

Lee: Thanks for the further info on the various metals a fabricator might use. I don't really have a "real life" company in mind. It's that most of my industries are named for family or significant mrr "mentors". F&F Fabricators would be a family reference, and the "Fabricators" simply because of the "F&F" alliteration.  So, I don't know yet quite what they make, or howBlindfold; but thanks to the suggestions on possible materials loads, there should be lots of traffic.Thumbs Up  Today I ordered a Wiking John Deere 6920 S tractor with forks (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390249593084&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123 )to handle the movement and stacking of rolls of wire, coils of steel, pallets of drums, boxboard &etc.  The "Farm Green" is going to look odd, so I'll likely give it an industrial yellow look. I'll probably extend the forks, maybe even make a more "fork-lift" gear for them. Those tires should make sense on the grade crossing at the main line. A regular fork-lift would have trouble there for sure.

Ulrich, my condolences and prayers on the death of your friend; and I'm sorry the Tanzania opportunity didn't develop. The track plan is elegant Thumbs Up

Barry: Sorry to hear about your cold, hope it goes even quicker than it came! (That goes for Sawyer too!)

Found out that the fellow who used to have his LHS in Woodstock ON is still in business--out of his home instead!
I never did find the LHS is some-one's home in London when I was there for a conference some years back. (It's when I snapped this)

Said to be good, but couldn't track it down - the streets just didn't seem to include the address I had been given Bang Head

Todd:

Just money, they print more every day.
....and that is going to bite us all one fine day, unfortunately. Crying

Jeff: That bone chip from the recent break is interesting, I didn't know they could float around like that. Glad the foot is now healing up a bit.  The Halloween theme on the loco and RPO car is very effective!Mischief

Time to grab a tea., and see if I can sort out some weights ready to doctor up those passenger cars.

TTFN.

God evening gents, I'm wiped. NWR hosted a bunch of Operators from aroudn the country in our openhouse. New to Operations ourselves, we leanred quite a bit. Ran into a former club member from 20 years ago, he was quite impressed with both the changes and the preservation. GTE was this weekend too, I picked up 2 tender shells, one Mohawk and one of the Riv. American Railroads. The former will become a second take at the Freedom Train's 1A tool car. We'll see how that goes, I don't have high hopes but we'll try. Also picked up a GP18? it's a Tyco so I'll have to drop a new chassis, vut it's a darn good model for CMPA 3634, aside from the slanted short hood. Okay, so in comparison there's a few things are off. But right now, it's in Iowa Interstate. And I was looking for Athearn coaches and Accurail flatcars, so to have it jump out at me immediately as CMPA, I think it'll work.

CRIME HAS HIT WILLIAMSVILLE!!!!!!

Yes it's true. Spent the last 2 1/2 hours at the elevator with the local police and the Crime ID from the County Sheriff. Fingerprints HAVE BEEN RECOVERED! Hopefully they will lead to a suspect or two possibly the perps. Brenda even had Missy to see if she could possibly track them . She started out really well it seemed until she got over to the outside pit and decided it was a good place to go poopy. Then she pretty much lost interest. Hey, she's not a professional and I'm not real sure she was on the right trail anyway. She kinda has her own idea of what needs to be tracked. Time will tell to see if the criminals are brought to justice.

I hope our brothersand sisters north of the border had a happy Thanksgiving.

Good Afternoon Folks,

took the sun a little longer today to clear the fog, but now it is sunny again. We were woken up quite early this morning by a terrible noise. Cranes gather at a nearby meadow for their journey to the south and you would not believe, what a terrific noise thousands of those huge birds can make!

Janie, a mug of coffee, please and a handful of those chocolate chippers!

A friend of mine was pestering me about some layout ideas, I guess, he just wants to get me out of my bad mood. Well, any which way, I warmed up my PC over the last days, and with some input from others in this forum, I came up with this track plan:

It is a western-themed layout, set in the dry southwest of the US, around 1910/1920, as for earlier periods, there is not much of a choice of locos & rolling stock. I was trying to get him hooked on my previous ARR ideas, but just as much as a lot of folks think of lederhosen and beer, when they hear Germany, the people here think of gunslingers, Festus Higgins, Miss Kitty, Wyatt Earp - well, Western movies. So the layout needs to have a "Gun Smoke" flavor.

Sorry guys, you are now in for this:

"Dear God, you made many, many poor people.
I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be poor.
But it's no great honor either!
So, what would have been so terrible if I had a small fortune?"
If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.
I'd build a big tall house with rooms by the dozen,
Right in the middle of the town.
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.
There would be one long staircase just going up,
And one even longer coming down,
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.
I'd fill my basement with a layout like the one above, mighty and fine,
For the town to see and hear.
And each locos loud "chuff" and "toot" and "honk" and "whine"

Would land like a trumpet on the ear,
As if to say "Here lives a wealthy man."

If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.
I see my wife, my Petra, looking like a rich man's wife
With a proper double-chin. Laugh
Supervising meals to her heart's delight.
I see her putting on airs and strutting like a peacock.
Oy, what a happy mood she's in.
Screaming at the servants, day and night.
The most important men in town would come to fawn on me!
They would ask me to advise them,
Like a Solomon the Wise.
"If you please, Reb Ulrich..."
"Pardon me, Reb Ulrich..."
Posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes!
And it won't make one bit of difference if i answer right or wrong.
When you're rich, they think you really know!
If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray.
And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall.
And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men, several hours every day.
That would be the sweetest thing of all.
If I were a rich man,
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.
If I were a wealthy man.
I wouldn't have to work hard.
Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.
If I were a biddy biddy rich,
Yidle-diddle-didle-didle man.  Whistling

No Janie, put that frying pan down - I´ll stop singing right now.

You all have a good Columbus Day!

P.S. Still no word from Keith!

Good Morning! Coffee please. Whoa! Somebody strangling  buffalo?  And earplugs too thank you.

Why do we celebrate Columbus Day anyway?

Wild night last night. Whew! Not often someone tips over a Pepsi machine. Especially on the property of someone you know. Well, one you work at. Or….Brenda does. I just drink coffee since I “retired” from farming. They’ll be talking about this one for years. Ranks right up there with when ol’ whatstheirnames outhouse ended up on top of the Homecoming bon fire pile back when I was in High School.

Of course, THAT was funny. It was kind of a tradition fro a while to throw an old outhouse on top of the wood pile. Problem this time was, the owners weren’t quite finished with it yet. Kinda ended the tradition.

Well, made some progress yesterday on Mom‘s house, hope to again today.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Good morning. It's 68 and mostly sunny. The high will be 86 and partly cloudy with a 10% chance of rain.

Nothing on the schedule today except some more clean-up on the layout. I also have to start seeing what wires go where. Over the years it's become a spaghetti factory under there.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a breakfast muffin with cheese and acup of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR Mug please.  I'll be at the Rivit counter discussing the various uses of cabooses on Amtrak Trains......Whistling

Well Morgan I see there is once again a prototype for everything.....  You caused me to do some quick research on the subject. MischiefSmile, Wink & Grin  I did tell the guy THAT if he has seen a caboose on an Amtrak train, it was most likely a MOW Work Train and not a passenger train.  I also mentioned THAT there are a few reasons why a freight train might still be using a caboose today, but they are a rarity and not common.  So....  I wasn't completely wrong.....GrumpyLaugh  Interestingly the crummy we were on looks like this (the PC Green one):

She is a transfer caboose made in the East Rochester, NY shops.  Your photo seemed vaguely familiar.....

OK Ulrich, now you got me humming Fiddler.....  I like the track plan.  Nice!

Uh, Todd, we celebrate Columbus Day, because he was so much like most of us.  He had a great idea, but when he set out to find India by going the wrong way, he ran smack dab into the continent THAT was in the way.  He of course assumed he was in India so he called the people here Indians.  Then even after he had been proved wrong with something called "facts" he still insisted he had been in India.  He still believed he had been to India right up until his death!  Make sense????  I once taught in a little village called Chemung, NY.  The very same place that produced some kids who got to be fairly well known for driving race cars.....  The Bodines.  They were my students, BTW (well 2 of the 3 were. I taught Bret and Todd.  Jeoff was in 9th. grade my first year teaching).  Anyway one of the other kids out in Chemung came into my class giggling.  I started class and the kid was still giggling.  i told him he needed to quiet down and pay attention.  He politly nodded, but kept right on laughing.  I finally got very terse with him!  One of the little (2nd.grade) girls came up to me and told me her teacher had just taught them Columbus discovered America.  I said, "Yes, so?"  Then she told me the boy was an Indian.......  Hmmmmmm????  I bet Jeffrey understands! LaughSmile, Wink & Grin

Well (deep subject) better get a move on and get some things done.

Later!

Yeah, I can understand that from both sides being more or less a half-breed. My father's ancestors came over from England while my mother's ancestors were here long before the white man first set foot on what is now New England. I sometimes wonder what Dragging Canoe would have thought if he had been told that descendants of his family and those of his brothers family would someday marry into the whites and become part of the white mans society.

Hello, again everyone. I'll take some chicken tenders and fries, Flo.

Sir Madog

... just more touch up of the track plan.

Hmmh, I think this is one of the best plans I ever developed (if no one else praises me, I have to blow into my own horn)!

Now, that's a good layout plan. roughly 10X10, good switching, and (if wanted) the builder can modify it to fit almost any era wanted.

I'd definately like to use that type of set up for my layout, when I get around to it, if it's O.K. with you.

Hey guys. an RBF for me please.

So busy day at the job, especially considering we were scheduled 2 people short. Plan for the rest of the day is to look up all the parts I need t get and run them by someone I know who has his own store (although he doesn't really have a store per se)

Rob, The game wasn't on the tube down here and I was working all day. Didn't find out till this morning. IIRC, sounded like Crosby missed 2 field goals. If I were the head coach I'd be looking for someone with better accuracy.

Todd, Looks like Missy couldn't get the poop on the bad guys, lol. Hopefully they find them.

Chris, Nice photo as usual. When were most of your photos taken?

Ulrich, plan looks pretty good Looks like some room for switching. Just out of curiosity, on the tail track near the cassette staging is there enough room for a loco and at least one car on that track?

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evening all.

This has officially been the shortest long weekend ever. Homecoming on Saturday is probably what did it. Not great (kinda bad, actually). Not worth the 25 bucks for the dance.

Sorry I can't stick around, but I'm kinda busy tonight. I'll catch ya later.

Good Afternoon, still grumpy.

Just back from meeting "The Creek Squad," think Geek Squad, only comprised of computer-whiz 8th graders. It'll be a nice "good news in the schools" feature.

ULRICH: I'm liking THAT track plan, though my ears are still bleeding from the "singing" earlier...Mischief A good, simple plan you have there... now, I'm re-thinking my re-thinking...again.

VINCENT: The bulk of my photos were shot between 1987 and 1994, which is a big reason why I want to keep my future layout in the '87-'93 era: go with what you "know." Thanks for the complement, by the way...does my photographer's ego good!Smile, Wink & Grin

TODD: Rerun would've been the one dusting for prints and corralling the investigating officers...

Outhouse flambe'? Sounds like fun...

Anybody been following the latest Tony Koester debate??? The instigationalist in me almost wants to start a Malcom Furlow thread...to really get the fireworks rolling. But, I'll behave myself.

It's close enough to supper time... I think a plate of cheeseburgers and bucket of Coke would be a good idea.

Afternoon, looks like the dinner is a little dead today.

Flo, I will take the Baked Moose with Stuffing with Cranberry Sauce in Celebration of the Canadian Thanks Giving, and a mug of Beer.Eh Dinner

Wife was not nice to me again today. Big Smile  She took off around 10:30 AM, right before I started stripping the lower kitchen cabinets. When she got home, she went off some about all the dust again! Bang Head What did she think was going to happen after seeing me covered with dust yesterday?

Got one coat of paint on the cabinets frame, and have came to a conclusion! (I can't believe I spelled that right) I won't be stripping the top cabinets frame. Using the sponge brushes and tips CN Charlie gave me, still stroke marks! My bother, plus once the drawers and doors are on, there is only a inch showing anyway.

Ulrich Plan looks pretty good for being point to point, I am more a rail fan watching them go around and around. Would your friend use a lift out or duck under? Do you enjoy doing track planing? If you do, let me know. Might be time to take a saws all to the current layout.

Well that is it for me tonight, going to do some BBQ Moose, Ribs, Sausages, Chicken *** and Hamburgers.  Dinner

Hey guys. I'm back. Sorry about the dirt that followed me in. I blame my friend with a banshee. That thing can throw one heck of a roost. Black Eye he it me with gravel while I was going 40 mph and climbing.

Did almost sink my quad trying to spin the wheels in the muddiest part of a creak. Anyone know the saying stuck and &^%#$%

If you can read this... thank a teacher. If you are reading this in english... thank a veteran

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer

If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer

If it's broken, get a hammer

If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!

I made sure I pulled a pick of a transfer. The capton on that weblink I posted underneath it lists the caboose as being in use for "ferrying cars". If you look, the back of an Amfleet is present in that picture, but I'll bet your right, there's not any paying people on it.

TRADITION!! (tradition!) Fiddler was my first musical at Cascade High School. I was in 6th grade. It was a blast!

Ken: You really want to see her hit the roof? Volunteer with a museum in restoring a steamer or a 1st gen diesel. She'll just LOVE to see you come home in that much grease, rust and ancient grime. And you thought your Amrerican Muscle was dirty.
