Was in local Tractor supply for mower filter and found John Deere , Fire engines, cars, trucks constrution vehicles and LIVESTOCK. Tiny chickens, cows, pets, you name it.  Hope this helps some of you.

Miss the family here. Hope all is well.

Nothing for me as Brenda is COOKING tonight.

"Cooking" TODD, what is this "cooking" you speak of???? It's pretty much FFYS (Fend For Your-Self) around here when it comes to food preparation, one (of many) side-effect of vastly different schedules.

Goooooooooood (I guess) Evening.... FLO? CHLOE? Whomever/whichever...how's about something to soothe my jangled nerves, lower my blood pressure; and get me to seeing only ONE of everything again.

Beer

THAT's a good start...I'm thinking more along the lines of...BeerBeerBeerBeerBeer

Why?

Well, thanks for asking. You see...I've coupled a foul, peeved at everything kinda mood with a 100% out-of-square/out-of-level house; and lumber which somehow looked straight and true at the big-box store, but today would almost be suitable as-is for a propeller or wing cross-section. The result? Well...so far, I've managed to bust one 1x4 in half, install a "scab" piece of 1x6 to cover-up a weeeeeeeee bit 'o mis-calculationism, and two more L-brackets. One is on the window frame which...isn't flat/straight/true, it's angled ever so slightly; but just enough to really make w**k out of trying to level it/keep it in line with the assemblies to either side of it. Yes, I could've gone to the wall next to the window...but figured in a plaster/lath house, going into good, solid 100+ year old wood was a better bet.

I swear to God Himself...the only thing "square" in this house is ME! Well, probably the Wife too...

Somebody, please, tell me again WHY we do this?? What's THAT? "relaxation?" I'll try to remember THAT...

I'm gonna step out the back door...I feel the need to launch a few lung rockets...toss some heart darts...knock a few more nails in the coffin...make a weather check...take in some respiratory therapy...

Chris

Evenin' Folks!

Just a decaf for me right now Flo.  Ah....  Who's are the kids with Bill?  He says they are his nieces???  Hmm.....  Think I just have a seat across the way from him.... with Ulrich.  Nieces huh?  (I rather think, jail bait, maybe....)  I'll try not to stare too much.  HmmCoffee  Wonder where Bill finds his friends?  What?  Nothing, just thinking out loud......

Sir Madog

Bill - I´d go for the chili dog and the beer - your friends are a little too young for me Devil

These days even looking can get you in trouble I hear..........

No sooner got down stairs to the layout and got to w*rk on the last turnout, and the phone rings.  My son.  His wife bought a used exercise bike and needs help getting it moved to their house.  Have truck, will help.  Of course at their house I was asked very nicely by a certain 3 year old girl that I adore if grandpa could stay and play with her a while......  Well I am not one to turn down an offer like THAT!  So grandpa stayed for an hour and had a great time with both granddaughters.  My Daughter in Law had been baking some apple crisp and apple brownies for freezing and sent me home with some of both.  I did manage to get the last of the turnouts assembled this evening.  They are soldered to each other and just about ready to put on ties and install on the module.

After I took a few photos I painted the PC ties with a gray paint.  Tomorrow I will give them a coat of Grimy Black  They should end up blending right in with the stained wood ties (I hope).  Still waiting on some parts for this project.  I may not be able to get it done for the Meet........ Just all depends how much time I get to w*rk on it and if the parts come in.

Later!

Good Morning, Bill - no friends with you today?

Good Morning You All!

It is a foggy autumn, with temperature just short of freezing - brrrr! Have to think about getting my tires changed to the fur-lined winter version. I am glad the Renault came with a full set of brand new winter tires, so I need to spend only a little on getting them changed.

Flo, a mug of coffee, please - nothing to eat, yet, as Petra is starting to prepare lunch.

Sam - that´s a nice picture, showing how proud you are to be a real "hogger" Thumbs Up

Chris - still in a sour mood? While working in Poland, I heard a saying that life is like a roll of toilet paper - long, gray and full of "manure". Don´t let ´em get you!

Ray - whenever you write about your granddaughters, I get a little jealous. I guess I am starting to be in the right age to be a grandfather, but I doubt that I ever will have any. My son´s GF has strictly no opinion of having a child, an for the time being, my son is following her on that opinion. She is a nice person, but for that reason I´d like my son to look for a "better occasion".

I did some w*rk on the track plan this morning, just a little tweaking here and there. I moved the access to the Saguaro Liquors Co. spur to the town on the right, giving me a clearer break between the two locations. I also changed some switches from # 6 to # 4 to gain some extra inches on the lead to the cassette staging. It is still only 18" now - I´d feel more comfortable to have a minimum of 24" there. I may also incorporate an engine house near the turntable - well, we will see.

Here is the updated version:

A rough calculation showed, that it will cost about $ 2,000 (it´ll be $ 1,500 in the US) to build this layout - and that´s for benchwork, roadbed, trackage and a simple DCC system alone - no locos, no rolling stock, no buildings and scenic materials. Whew!

Have a good day!

Well I have a honey do list for this morning, and hit the basement later.  I have one month to go, and I have about 10-12 cars to do.   I have to do at least two a week!!

Hope everybody has a good morning.

Good Morning! Coffee and a jelly filled donut please. Um….Raspberry. Thank you.

Suppose to get to 83 again today. Not too shabby for October the whatever in exciting Central Illinoy.

Columbus Day. Hm. Not that I’m against holidays, especially if they don’t require a card AND you get a day off from work, or at last some do, but Columbus Day? I do recall as a child being taught that Columbus discovered America and all we have is owed to him. Later we learned weeeeeeell, that’s not exactly true, but pretty close…..kinda sorta. Seems he got lost, come upon an island he thought was India, (much smaller than he imagined it would be) met some people who had never heard of Sri Lanka or pepper, realized he was not where he thought he was and was lost BUT…… as luck would have it, had discovered a new world. Cool.

Now by the same token, my parents discovered Williamsville. Oh sure there were already people here, but we didn’t know any. Never met 'em. And, living so far away, not likely to any time soon. Lots and lots of people don’t know where Williamsville is or have never been there. Why I’ll bet if you asked right here in the diner alone, you’ll find someone I’m sure, who has never been to Williamsville, Illinoy or Illinois(z), and quite possibly a few who had never even heard of it until I showed up. Not being the Vacation mecca like Branson, Mo or any Super Walmart, there just isn't much need to announce you are from or know where Williamsville is or even go there for that matter.  They, my parents, were looking for a new route to St Louis and “poof!” there it was. A shining little star with not only a grocery store and a butcher, but a laundrymat too. A true oasis.  Went back home, told the family where they’d been and they said “where? Williamsville? Where’s that?” To which Dad puffed his chest out and said “Oh, just this little place……(waaaaaaaiit, drum roll please)……I discovered. (Ta da!!!!) See honey? Good thing I had that road map upside down eh.”Big SmileThumbs Up

That being said, I’m not against the holiday or even any reason we hold him in high regard as the first sailor to ventured into the unknown. Like the Vikings before him, very brave. But as the Native Americans scratch their heads wondering the same thing, or at least the ones on the island he found, how do we figure. I mean the Americas were being traveled to for eons.

Maybe we should have a Lewis and Clark Day. They discovered all things west.

Ooor diiiid theeeeeey. Hmmmmm. (leaves scratching chin. Then turns around) Say, does anyone actually remember the Confederacy surrendering? I mean, you don’t suppose………Ray, you have a grey beard, do you remember?

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Todd - I sure like your definition of Columbus day Smile, Wink & Grin

Being an ex CEO/CFO, I am quite familiar with all those different management by ... theories. One of it was "Management by Columbus", which goes like this:

  • We don´t know which way to go and where to arrive at
  • We don´t know when we will be there
  • We don´t have the cash to do it and need to borrow it
  • But let´s get on with it.

Another one was "Management by Eiffel Tower" - the biggest nuts are on the bottom of it; or "Management by Hippopotamus" - up to the neck in the muck, but the mouth still wide opened.

And Todd, not only Ray has a gray beard - me too!

Zoe, some more coffee  for me, please

Morning guys,

Just popping in to say hi after a few days absence due to the computer crash.

Have to reload everything now and sign back on to everything now to get up and running again properly. UGH!

I believe I was last on page 17, maybe later I will read through and see what I missed while I was Out of Commission, if not suffice it to say HI to everyone and if I missed a post, sorry.

I have 2 Drs appts. today, one regular Dr and one Surgeon this afternoon.

Other half has to miss the surgeon Apt. due to working today trying something new at the grocery store...cake decorating in hopes of getting extra hours in the bakery. Will see how it goes for today. SO far after 3.25 hours hasn;t been sent home yet! They are trying a teaching class to see who best may be the candidate for the job which will come with aditional training. Other half has always wanted to decorate cakes so good idea and hopefully will get some hours doing it if it works out today well.

WEll, I am off ...one bubble to the right...

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a cup of dark roast coffee and a couple of those creme filled doughnuts this morning.  I'll go sit at the Rivet Counter for a few minutes with Ulrich and Todd.

Beard?  Huh?  Gray in my beard?  Naw, just a bit of silver these days.  Confederate surrender?  They did?  I think there are still some good old boys out there who didn't hear THAT........Whistling  Heck, I still remember Washington crossing the Delaware!  Huh?  Why?  I don't remember exactly but I think he wanted to get to the other side.....  Probably a big sale at Mall Wart or sumpin'. ClownWhistling  Reminds me of a song...  "What did Dela Wear Boys, What did Dela wear....?"  Opps, I think Vinnie is awake, I'll be quiet!

It is currently 52°F under cloudy skies here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  There is a frost advisory for us tonight.  Calling for a fairly hard frost in many places.  Guess today will be glean the garden day.  I have all the winter squash and any peppers left out there to bring in.  Good thing I was out here working on the wood pile last Saturday, there is plenty of wood for the stove in the back, I'm sure we will want to get it fired up tonight.  In the meantime the coffee is hot and the conversation good!

Catch you all later!

Afternoon! I'll have the Rib lunch with mashed potatoes and corn. Ray's tab I see!

I have WONDERFUl Potentially good news! Amtrak is looking to move the Cardinal to a Daily schedule. This means they'll need 2 more trains, making 6 more Attendents, 2 each of conductor, engineer, mayvbe brakeman, plus to meet the new schedule, two part-time positions at Indy Union. All this tentatively by this time in 2011. What's this mean? Well, I've attendented at ITM for three years, I've almost got their Conductor license, might be able to get my Brakeman by then (ITM is short on Conductors, so they ran me through the system backwards, it's supposed to go Brakeman-Conductor), and a teen has a far better chance for PT positions anyway, so I won't be fighting so many experienced People. I can apply for Amtrak locally, so I'm not dealing with distance to hiring, (tried for a nukmber of grunt postions in NYC, they told me politely that they had had a number of NYC apps turned in, so I was out of the running) and actually have a chance at getting a job with them! Now, to get in contact with a friend's father-in-law I tried to meet in August but couldn't make schedules match.

Who knows, I might be able to get this whoole career thing off the ground.

Afternoon folks!

Flo, just a RBF for me right now.

Morgan, that would be great!  I'll keep you in my prayers THAT turns into an opportunity for you.

Well, (deep subject) I brought in two more huge heads of cauliflower, a bag of broccoli shoots, another bag of green peppers, some green beans, and a wheelbarrow full of winter squash.....  Most of it I will donate to the local Community Lunch Program (except for the green beans and the winter squash).  I don't have time nor space in the little freezer to save much of it....  At least it won't go to waste.  Made my daily trip over to Canandaigua to feed my sister's cats.  Monet Marie, who has been a nasty little ball of terror most of her life has now decided I can pet her when I come to feed her.  She is starting to lose weight I think.  She is having some kidney failure and won't touch the food the Vet prescribed for her.  Probably won't be around next year..........

OK, I'm heading down to the train room to do some painting and other stuff.

Later!

Afternoon guys, well maybe on to evening...

I skim read everything from my last post on page 17 to today. Thanks to all who suggested various bug-finding programs. I have two new ones the computer repair company installed. WE will see how well they do at protecting us. Have to give them a shot, if they say they work. Of course that's what they said about the last one too. Dunno. I hate to have so many on here. and for those who said it...McAfee HAS been kicked to the curb...though it DID protect us for well for 8 years!

Came from the general Surgeons's office. HAve to go for a biopsy on the 25th to see if they really is necrotic {dead} tissue I'm carting around in my back. The surgeon said even if it is, it probably won't decrease the pain I have anymore than it is as the necrosis probably isn't causing pain. I knew that, but he has his disclaimer.

Regular Dr. did a checkup and ordered bloodwork to be done Fri AM. He re-upped my Oxycontin script.GOt my flu shot and a new tetanus shot with the pertussis {WHopping cough} booster in it. THose of us who are older should have it. Have a feeling of coming down with something on the edge of it and I know I will be miserable the next few days as I always get the symptoms of the flu when I get the shot, no matter WHAT they say that you don't get it....so I expect to be a miserable cuss the next few days so watch out...just allertin' y'all.

Dinner tonight will be a heat-n-eat frozen bag of something stir-fry, easy and quick.

I'm tired. I haven't been sleeping well lately {see Ulrich you not the only one!}.

I think i will have a glass of wine from ray's list. boy can I use it. A glass of Tej from Montezuma WInery in Seneca Falls sounds good, even if Ray doesn't recommend it. Light sweet white wine. Ah that's better. Hits the spot.

Hmm. NOw I can't get teh smiley's to work....anybody have any idea why? Are they not working anymore or is it just me? and my new system? FIx one thing and something else gets broke or is missing some component to operate correctly.

Have to upgrade my AOL now as have disc to install older version, need to upgrade it to 9.5 fast SE edition, so will go do that now...maybe that will help to speed things up here online.

Have a great evening guys!

Good Evening All,

Back from Nova Scotia last night. Tried to stay for coffee this morning, but the phone was really active. Trip went well with my next younger brother and youngest son along so not too much driving and we took the St John / Digby ferry as well. Getting too old for hours of night driving especially on unlit twisty roads. Mom didn't have a clue we were coming for the birthday party until she opened the front door and there we were. Way cool.

Trucks got launched to Atlanta and now I just have to finish preps, sort and load the Kenworth for Lime Rock this weekend. It's all just a giggle.

Sam nice pic. Hope Flash snags that Amtrak job as well. Good to see G has his puter whipped back into shape and Jeff is back on the scene.Ray - quit playin' in the garden and get THAT module finished! Oh and Chris - two words - steel studs (make excellent layout frameing).  Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian bro's - I'm off to the museum to put in more iNvisible model train track. (I mean really who can actually see those itty bitty rail joiner? Think they'll notice if I just leave them off?Whistling  CUL, J.R.

I'm tired. I haven't been sleeping well lately {see Ulrich you not the only one!}.

You, too?  I thought I was the only one.

For me, I feel tired aroun d 10 PM or so, but I toss and turn untill 2AM or so. Then, for some odd reason, I have been having some really strange nightmares that wake me up and keep me up for virtually the whole night.  When I finally drift back to sleep, I get scared awake in about 5-10 minutes.

 I can't figure it out.

Before I forget, I have a question.

How did the dinner get it's name? Is it named after one of the MR staff members?

NERM I go to bed around 10. Then I wake up around midnight and watch tv for an hour, 2 am and get up to watch TV for an hour or so then up at 4 am, then up around 5:30 and pretty much awake for the morning. If I have to pee, forget it...I am awake. If I turn over, forget it... I am awake. Any time I wake, it's like someone turned on bright flourescent lights in my head. I spend more time awake than asleep. SOmetimes I can take a day nap for about 1 to 1.5 hours. If I am lucky. And I take Ambien to sleep well. HA! Really! It doesn't work.

I have discovered the phases of the moon determine how much or how little sleep I get. Really. Like, for sure. Totally. Now if I could regulate the moon phases, I might be ok.

Try to sleep well tonight!SleepZzz

the North East Rail Modeler

 galaxy:

One of the veteran dinerguests (read: people who've spent the most here) can fill in the gaps as I'm just going by the archives of the old Diner loales, but I believe Elliot was the one whostrted the diner idea. It started as a coffeeshop. About the third iteration, no one had heard hide nor hare of Elliot, and his name stuck for recognition.

I think we'll start an Insomiacs ananymous group. I join in too. I think it's a temporary form of depression driven by idleness on my part however.

Evenin' Folks.......  Ah, hmm....  Oh hi Jeffrey.  Kinda slow here tonight.

Ah, Flo, I'll have a cup of decaf if you please.

It is currently 36°F outside here in the Finger Lakes and I have lit the wood stove for the first time this year.

Today has been somewhat frustrating.  Every time I needed a tool down in the layout room, it was gone....  Spent most of the layout time looking for things.  Did manage to get a bit more done on the project in spite of THAT fact.  Oh, and then as I'm looking around the layout for stuff, I see a mess in the scene where I have a wood pile made for the tile factiry.  I mean stuff is all chewed up and little calling cards from a friendly mouse there...  Start looking around, and find more calling cards and some chewing of items.....  Now I know what Blackie was doing staring into the air vents over the past week.  I left a surprise for little mousie...Wink  I'll see what happens tonight. Big Smile  It is THAT time of year.  I think I know how the varmint got in the house.  The dryer vent clamp was broken a week ago.  I have repaired it, but THAT is the only way I know of it could have found a way in.  I have sealed up the entire outside of the house several years ago (new siding) and all the doors have been kept shut.  Been about 4 years since I had one get in.  Hopefully it is a single mouse and it will be kaput in the morning.

Wonder how Barry is doing.  Hope his cold is better and not turned into something worse for him!

Getting warm in here, so I best go shut the wood stove down a notch or 2.

Later!

*grumble* Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, Barry-sized bacon cheeseburger please...

Well, a slightly better mood today... just generally irritated with a multitude of irritants, I guess. It'll pass eventually, always does.

JR: I considered steel for the benchwork, but decided I'm a lousy enough carpenter; any attempt at steel w**k would probably result in: a) an expensive scrap metal pile, b) a severed artery or two, and c) a likely trip to an institution of mental hygiene...

Through some judicious (and some not-so) use of liquid nails, screws, and C-clamps, I've manage to force an offending structure into a mostly-square, mostly-level condition. I keep telling myself there will eventually be a layer of plywood and 2" foam over the frames. There will eventually be some form of fascia over the front. Minor glitches can and probably will be obscured from view. Don't get me wrong, I'm measuring three times and (usually) only cutting once. I'm using the proper instruments of construction, w**king carefully and focusing on the task at hand. THAT said, I'm sure I'll not be getting any awards for craftsmanship in construction anytime soon... I can point to one section THAT I'm proud as proud can be of how it turned out...and then look at another section THAT despite my very best efforts...will look a LOT better with the aforementioned items covering it.

It doesn't have to be "perfect," but at the same time, I don't want to have a lot of "issues" to deal with later. I'd rather build it as close to "right" the first time than have to go back and de-construct and re-construct later.

RAY: Mouse season has started? Geesh! And I haven't started patching the foundation yet... guess THAT task just moved up on the "to-do" list... Yup, sometime this week or weekend; me, an 80 lb. bag of mortar, the mortar tub, and masonry tools will get all-friendly as we combine to patch the latest gaps and cracks in the limestone block foundation.

"Oh joy. Oh rapture."

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Maybe this would be a good time to clean-out and check the dryer vent too...

The only "surprises" I can leave for a mouse, is a mousetrap. Even then, we had one last year who managed to leave "calling cards" along the edge of a very strategically placed glue-trap (NOT using them again, bashing Mr. Mouse with a chunk of rail really sours the day). The same mouse, we think/hope, also managed to strip a good old fashioned mousetrap. Poison of any kind is a no-go, Rerun would get into it for sure, or would catch/eat a poisoned mouse. Not good. As it is, I think the furry boy has "agreements" with the mice. We don't see them, he'll leave them alone. I mean seriously, when Mr. Mouse drops "calling cards" on the dresser, 2 feet from the bed where Rerun sleeps...and he can't get the mouse...something's not on the up-and-up!

Think I'll go have a chat with the boy...

Lunchtime, Folks!

Zoe, I´ll go for a couple of chili dogs, a plate of fries, and a RBF to go with it.

Brought some friends along, just to say hello!

They are just a tiny bit different than Bill´s friends Wink

Following a little discussion with my friend, I was able to put the finishing touches to the track plan. We were able to pin down region and era, which now is 1920. The layout is (very) loosely based on the Prescott, AZ branch of the AT & SF, so he will have to look for the appropriate motive power for it. I am thinking of a 4-4-2 to handle passenger and mixed trains, and a 4-6-0 or 2-8-0 to handle the local freight train. There is not much around of that in the market, so we will look for some used brass locos - any idea, where to look for, other than Caboose Hobbies?

I did some tweaking of the plan, like changing the radius of the curve on the northern part from 18" to 22", narrow the shelf on the left side and incorporate a 1-stall engine house. I am not really happy with the switchback operation serving the Wheaton´s Feed spur, but that may be resolved once construction commences. Heck, I wish I could build this one. We received the annual account statement for energy and I have to pay an additional Euro 167 for the year´s consumption Surprise Don´t know, where to get that kind of money from - my "strategic" reserve is pretty much depleted Confused

Well, here is the plan (pre-final?)

You all have a good one!
