Sir Madog
Currently, I am stuck in my thought about that track plan. I quite like it, but of course, it has its limitations in terms of operation. This is where I am torn between two lovers and start to feel like a fool ConfusedWhistling

Thanks---now you got that song going through my noggin'----sheeeshLaughWhistling I kinda see where you are coming from in terms of that plan. Space ends up being a HUGE consideration--Whistling

Hello----

I'll just have a coffee and a breakfast bagel please-----

I'm off to early church service then it's off to the classes and then a 5jgyf& committee meeting. Nice little Sunday for this'un---oh well---

I'm going to, hopefully that is, get some time to do some MR this week---by the looks of things the hd list isn't the only thing that'll clutter things up. I've got my bloodwork to get done this week and shopping to do and the front entrance needs a repaint--BADLY. Oh joy oh blissGrumpy I just found out there is also an internal hd list as well---mumble grumble snuffle snortGrumpyWhistling

Anyhooooo---I'll just sit at the RC and check out these MR mags here---Smile

Good morning all,

I hope everyone remembered to adjust their clocks this morning, remember it’s all about saving candles!  Now that I have weekends off this time change isn’t so bad, back on my active duty days it meant a 5 hour watch instead of a normal four hour watch.

Sawyer, congratulations! (Everyone stay off the sidewalks).

All day yesterday I moved rooms; furniture that is, bookcases, snakes, mice, dressers and so forth.  Dorothy is still lying around with her foot propped up.

Coffee in a  UNION PACIFIC  mug and some slices of papaya, please.

Finally finished watching the rest of those James May toy train episodes on youtube last night (took forever to load). Now I'm curious, which locomotive models out there offer the most mileage before having a major malfunction?

Have a good day y'all.

Sir Madog
Jeff - I hope you get that new brace soon - I have been reading about Charcot´s Foot as my BIL suffers from it as well. The brace he is wearing helps him quite a bit.

It's nasty stuff all right. A slow insidious crippling disease if ever there was one. It moves in slowly then before anybody even thinks there's anything wrong it strikes. Don't know yet how long the special brace will take. The one I'm using right now is a home made affair I cobbled together from an old diabetic walking boot. It can't keep all the weight off the ankle but it at least keeps it rigid for now. Moving around is painful but at least I can move around and the doc said the last thing I should do is sit around and do nothing. All that would do is weaken me further and it would further compromise my immune system. While he admits that even though he doesn't like it the best thing I can do is to keep being as active as I can, but don't overdo it.

I worked with my father yesterday to get the tractors ready for the mowing season. The one that gave the most trouble was the new Yardman. Almost the entire intake assembly had to be disassembled so the carb could be primed. Seems the cheap POC doesn't have the ability to prime itself. The old Peerless only needed a battery charge and it fired right up. They don't build them like that anymore. We then proceeded to mow the yard, just hitting the high points. That took about 30 minutes. The nice thing about the old tractor is that it can be entirely hand controlled while all your feet do is just sit there doing nothing.  I then had to wait around for the Home Health nurse to show up so she could do her changing the dressings on my feet, something I'm fully capable of doing myself, but you can't tell docs anything these days.

Mornin'...... er....uh..... Hmmm.  Afternoon everyone!

Sheesh! Where did the time go last night.  Seems I lost an hour someplace around here.  Zoe I'll just a an everything bagel and a cup of dark roast coffee for brunch today I guess.

Yep, forgot to set the clocks ahead last night when I went to bed around midnight.  Hey, I'm retired, I don't need to worry, I'll just do everything an hour later..........

I got an email late last night from the gentleman coming to see the layout today.  He is currently North of the border up in Canada and is returning today.  My house is more or less on his way home.  He said he would be here around 3PM.  Don't know whether he is thinking EST or EDT???  I shall see.  No problem as I will be here anyway.  I still have to drive to Canandaigua and feed the cats.  Then on to dinner at my son's house.  They are baking a Turkey, ah part, (you know the ***)  this afternoon.  Lucky Turkey is one of the things I can eat in moderation with the Gout.  BTW the foot is getting a bit better every day.  Swelling has gone down quite a bit and I can put pressure on it without it feeling like like someone has stuck an ice pick in it and is wiggling it around.........  Still hurts though.

Best get a move on.  Need to get a few things done ASAP.

Later!

It's been nearly two weeks, but we appreciate the Kudos from our ExPat Texans about Texas Independence Day.

Of course, between Governor Goodhair-Rick Perry-wanting to declare himself"Governor for Life"and the varied and sundry Tea Partiers/Baggers/912'ers and other varied and sundry loons acting like the"Ungodly Love Children of Ayn Rand and Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel',it was mostly unnoticed!!!

You know,Rick Perry and Rod Blagoivich oughta star in their own sitcom about two former governors who start their own salon!!

Good afternoon all. I think I'd like some of Ray's Finger Lakes coffee thank you.

Ulrich, you little dickens. Bet you didn't think I'd recognize the song in your dilemma.

Jeff- That is so true. I have a ‘77 model Cub Cadet that runs and starts like a champ and always has since it was new. I dread the day she quits because you just can't get parts for a cast iron Kohler anymore unless they just happen to still have some laying around. This thing is built like a little tractor. No stamped steel except for the fenders and hood. I know it's inevitable but until then, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Ray- Found your hour! You were sleeping so I used it. Hope you don't mind. I'll give it back in the fall.

Aztec- There was a plan for that sitcom. Fell trough though. Rod tried to sell Perry's spot to the highest bidder while he was planning his record breaking third term run.

OK I admit, I didn't go to Church today. Not because of the time change, but because of the grandkids preparing to leave. AND THEN I BOLTED TO THE TRAINROOM! I have been there ALL DAY! It has been grandBig Smile. Got quite a bit accomplished. I have to lay some track before I can put the upper level on completely so I am in the middle of doing that. Then I will need another sheet of OSB. I've just about used up what I had. I also discovered that I won't need a pop up hole for this portion. I can reach all spots at this point. That, of course, is subject to change, but at this point I don't need one.

Sir Madog

Sawyer - congratulations on getting the Learner´s Permit. I still remember getting mine, back in 1973, at the DOT´s office in Bremerton, WA. After a couple of weeks I went for the real thing in Seattle. Back in Germany, I had that license just transcribed into a German "Fuehrerschein". Here you have to go to driving school to get lessons and practice your driving skills. It costs not only $$$, but $$$$$ to get your license, so I was really lucky, having to pay only a small fee for the transcription.

Ulrich, true man, it was $2 for the test and $2.50 for the actual permit.

Thanks for the congrats yet again everyone!

Well, I did some scenery work this weekend and weathering work this weekend and last. I need to clean off the tracks still, but here's some pics of the new scene:

Afternoon ya'll

Not a whole lot done today. Still trying to adjust to the DST thing. I've done some fiddiling with the track on a fold-up table. Have a 6-track yard with each track holding about 4 cars, and a lead long enough for an engine and a car. I'm not actually running trains on it, but using it to sort out project cars. I've been able to get 4 up to par today, I'd have gotten more up there but I'm out of metal wheelsets. I also found my jar of wash material and have been weathering some cars with it. I like this wash alot because it actually fades the paint while doing the job of a normal wash. I also picked up a can of something that I think may make a very good dullcote substitute. It dulls stuff a lot better than dullcote does. I'll see if it can seal in stuff like dullcote does, after I find my set of pastels....

Flip, Technically the SP, but officially the UP. The DRGW  purchased the SP in 1988, but the DRGW got merged into the SP. The UP took over the SP.

Rob, nice hoppers

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Just dropping in to say that as I speak a substitue grandson (friend of #2 gs who came as there was room becuse #1 gs stayed home this March Break) is operating the layout - as he and #2 gs have been for most of the afternoon. Cool He's got things pretty much figured out, and both the boys have a light touch on the throttle. #2 gs has a shorter attention span (ADD) and has gone to play a video game.Whistling

Oh, that derailment pic is wicked!
..it was a wicked derail - the lead loco took out the bathroom of the house. The occupant had used THAT 5 minutes before the train arrived! (SO, in a way not so wicked!EvilAngel...anyway, here's another shot of it.

Have to get a printer to recognize its new cartridge...why wouldn't it just do what it's always done?...maybe the gremlins we flushed from the layout today have migrated  to the printer!Clown

Hi Gang,

Chloe, how about a double topping haiwiian thick crust pizza and a RBF.

Well guys we arrived in Spokane around 4.00pm yesterday and the only snow we had was right as we crossed the border at Eastgate, Idaho. and only for about 5 miles. The rest of the journey the roads were like summer only less traffic.

We saw a number of leased units from Uncle Pete running for the CPR in the Crowsnest Pass,  Then lots of BNSF action in Idaho. Saw a full length grain hopper unit train crossing the long bridge over Pend-orelle lake. There was a good 1/4 mile of train on the east of the lake, all the bridge and another 1/4 mile of train waiting to get onto the bridge.  Quite a sight. Then many more BNSF trains from Sandpoint to Spokane.

Didn't do much today besides getting the truck washed.  But are going out for supper a little later.

Think I'll have a little snooze till then as my Son is busy renting out the main floor of his house right now.

He has a suite in the lower level that he lives in and we are staying there with him.

Maybe will hit Sunset Junction tomorrow and see what Jim has new in stock.

Really glad you all have located Jeff.   Prayers and blessings be with you Jeff and all who stand in need.

Cajun Ryan, that bread really looks great, it had my mouth just watering.  The same was true with Petra's cake as well.  Boy do we ever have some great food items pass through the Ol' Diner here.

That was some really great weathering on those Saskatchewan grain hoppers.  Robby, have you tried doing one of the new BRIGHT GREEN Saskatchewan cars with the Prairie Lily on it and the full lenght name.  They are something really special.

Well if I hit the Jackpot at the Hobby Shop I will let you know of my winnings.

In the mean time and in between time "keep your stick on the ice"   Thanks Red Green

By the way Ray (Howmus),  What could cost you $6000.00 when you cut a hole in the wall ?  Was there plumbing and wiring in it or what ??   Please tell,  That must be quite a story.Banged Head

Stayed off my feet pretty much all day today as it's pretty tough to get around right now, even inside the house. And I don't want to overdo it. I did get the couplers on the Riverossi passenger cars changed out though.

Turkey with veggies stew, please.

***Vincent, thank you, but those hoppers are Robby's.WinkLaugh Wish they WERE mine, as they are excellent indeed.

***Johnboy, sounds like some really great train watching there. Any pics?

Spent about 20 minutes starting 5 scratch trees using twigs and/or weeds picked up from around the farm. Twister (one of our mares) was trying to "help" me the whole time. She's a very curious horse. Should finish them tomorrow. Have no real plan, just experimenting with stuff.

My two train items will sell on the-bay tonight. Looks like I'll cover what I spent on my last loco purchase. Probably not my wife's loco though. I have other stuff to sell, so will make it up the next go-round.

Hope everyone is doing well tonight.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Evenin' folks!

Flo just a cup of decafe for me.  I'll be in the back warming up by the stove.

The gentleman who came to look at my layout for operations possibilities,  I think also forgot to change his clock as he was an hour late (He was coming back from a family gathering in Canada).  The half hour turned into an hour and 15 minutes.  I thoroughly his visit and got lots of good ideas.  He is going to do some more looking at the track plan, and will get back to me with more specifics.  One thing he suggested I thought was very interesting was not to take all the trains over the summit on Bare Mountain, but rather double trains coming up out of Hopewell Jct. with one engine running backwards.  When it reaches the area where the track coming down from the summit goes to Kanandaqua where I have a passing track, simply cut off the helper and use the engine running in reverse take the train the rest of the way......  He also has me thinking, The logging area I did back 25 years ago really doesn't look right in the location, So I am debating removing most of what I have there and putting in a quary and adding a passing siding up there.  It would make it a bit more like Summit, NY on the "Old and Weary".

As soon the guest left, I headed over to my son's house for Sunday dinner.  Turkey with all the trimings and PIE for dessert.  Then I headed up to Canandaigua to feed the cats, neither of which were anywhere to be found. I left food and water, and headed back here.

As long as you asked Johnboy...Big Smile  I was just going to put a small staging yard on the other side of the wall, but somehow a couple years back I went and had a whole new room for additional layout built......  complete with electric and heat (gas).  So I now have a nice comfortable place to w*rk on the trains!

Man, the foot has been good all day, so I didn't take any Advil.  Just took one, it is aching like crazy right at the moment.

Hope all of you are having a good evening!

Good Evening, Flo - it has been a while! I'll catch up on the rest of the posts tomorrow (when I'm off and have more time), but for now, how about a RBF, please? Thanks!

Jeff. it's good to hear you are still among the living, and I hope they get a better-fitting boot for you REALLY soon! Angel

Flip, short answer is, D&RGW was absorbed into SP first and then SP into UP. (I see Vincent beat me to THAT one). This page has the 'family tree' for most North American RR's, if anyone else wants to track down the lineage of their favorite RR.

Robby, those hoppers are lookin' good Yeah!! - I was thinking, if your customer is NOTB, customs and such might run him/her as much as was paid for the hoppers, originally (at least from what I've heard...).Oops

In checking the last page or so, I see that Sawyer got his learner's permit - YAY!! Bow Of course, if your state is like Missouri, they look for every opportunity to get more money out of you (license fee, plates, property taxes, etc.) (/miniSoapBox) The new scenery area looks good - and like one of those natural over-arching tree things, too.Cool

And I see Ulrich has been singing (for a second chorus) some old PP&M songs in the Diner (okay, I think THAT one actually was Peter Yarrow by himself, but y'know...), and Ray brought a guitar in for the singalong. So where's the campfire - or were you just singing around Chris' smoking ears?Smile,Wink, & Grin

Ulrich, as for fitting the G&D into that space, how much vertical space can you spare for it? Smile,Wink, & Grin From what you've shown us, that plan looks like a good use of your 7' 4". Remember, there is NO perfect trackplan, no matter what we tell ourselves (especially once we start benchw**k).

Todd, I see you've been (Shock gasp!) actually getting down to the train room. Thumbs Up

TMarsh
Grand daughter just filled her diaper while sitting in my lap. Bless her little pea pickin' heart. Grandmas turn to hold her.
Laugh So, did you mention about the full diaper to Brenda when you handed over the cutie to her? (Chuckle...snort...giggle...)

Chris, since I get all my mail at the P.O. box, they'll have to look long and hard to personally interview me with all those overly personal questions that even if I had a girlfriend, would be none of her business (unless we were married, that is). I'm almost hoping I have someone come by, so I can see how stupid some of those questions are. And cite my Fifth Amendment protection against incriminating myself...Whistling I did have some clients who are out of w**k that I suggested might see about the census for some temp income (just not the overly anxious or easily terrified ones).

Ray, after trying a look at that layout design program you mentioned, I'm still more inclined to stick with RailModeller - you might take a look at it. For me, I like it being able to show two rails instead of a single line, and the newest version allows you to do grades (up or down). Maybe take a look at it.

Garry, maybe you could ask those folks at church if the words 'grace' or 'forgiveness' are in their Good Book? Hey, if you want to come to Cape for church, I can give you directions? Wink Hope things get resolved more smoothly than what it sounds like currently.

Jerry - I'd agree with the others about liking your new avatar pic.Smile Wanna tell us more about it and all (and no, I do NOT w**k for the census bureau!)?

About time for me to see about catching some ZzzZzz in case they call me tonight. Will check back with you all in the morning.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good Evening All,

No fair - you added another page while I was trying to catch up! Just a glass of cab for me please. Long day again. Yesterday amidst all the rain I got the back of the Focus started. Turns out all the suspension bushings were shot so the entire subframe is now off and totally disassembled to send for sand blasting. Lots of surface corrosion as well as the mangled bushings made it a necessity. Of course half the pivot bolts were siezed so lots of w..k was needed with the sawzall and death wheel (3" abrasive cutoff tool) and yes it took all day.

Today was spent on the house between chores and construction in the basement. I found another use for extruded polystyrene  board too! It can be used for insulation - who knew ? The window openings are now sheathed with the stuff and ready for paneling. Once I get far enough with the basement I'll start laying out a w..k area so I can finish some of the other projects and have an area to convert to a hobby bench once I'm further along.

Rain all day Saturday and most of today with high winds. We did find a small leak in the ceiling of the master bedroom by the chimney and one frrom the slider on the first floor - probably both flashing so I have a bit extra to do once the rains stop.

Good to see Jeff back though the complications are a worry. Hope you get the new boot soon - sounds like the one I had to wear when the foot was messed up. They w..k well though I broke mine push starting a car at the track....

With all these musical allusions I guess I should unpack the drum set. If arthur backs off I could join in. Since the new digital music devices have lots more room Sawyer could also add Maybelline and Hot Rod Lincoln or at least Airmobile to his mobile tunes - oh yeah and Going Mobile as well, no? So many songs so little time. Time to get some sleep as tomorrow will come early again. Just remember ,when life looks like easy street there is danger at your door.   C.U.L. , J.R.

Sawyer- With all the suggestions for cruisin' music maybe you should add this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zEzHPsi87w

Got a good chunk accomplished today. Spent an hour trying to get a transition from straight to right to the left arc on the upper peninsula the so the super dome doesn't jump trackBanged Head. That's my test car because it has the six wheels and is the longest. If it can take a turn all of them can. Mission accomplished.

No pic for tomorrow, too messy. I have one piece of foam to cut and I'm not cleaning up until it's cut.

Prayers for those in need.

No pictures at this time, but at 10:15 PM on March 14, 2010, Extra #1 picked up a lone tank car from the NS interchange at CP Bloom and delivered it to the nearby Pittsburgh Brewing Company.  This marks the first movement on the Allegheny, Mercer, and Lake Erie Railroad's Schenley subdivision.  The company's SW1000 #1000 was the power.  Despite being in desperate need of repair, it is the only unit currently rostered in AM&LE colors.  Management is quite proud, after two years of planning and preparation.

Originally operating between Pittsburgh and Conneaut Ohio, the AM&LE has since grown to range as far north as Buffalo NY through the acquistion of former CSX trackage.

 Good Morning,

It is a bright, but cold day again. Although the sn*w is now gone for good, it seems, as if Spring is stuck somewhere south of us.

Well, Chloe, I´ll have a cafe au lait and just a croissant aux nature to munch on, please. I´ll be in the corner booth to study a drawing I already made this morning.

As you all know, I am stuck in my thinking about the layout "in being". I usually go more for looks, as a have a picture of it in my head. Whenever I start to analyse  how I could operate the dang thing, I usually find out, that it won´t have much of an operation to it. Again, this happened to me with my "BR Bishop´s Gate" plans. If´d build it, it would most likely end up as a static diorama, and this is not what I want to have. I want to do a little bit of shunting, I mean switching and, if possible, operate two different kinds of trains - a passenger train and a goods train (when you intend to build a British outline layout you need to adopt BE and not AE). As Google is my friend, I found some ideas in the web. With a lot of tweaking and imagineering, I know have a new idea, which seems to be worth following up on.

I hope not to get killed by you guys, as I have probably presented dozens of layouts here, but so shall it be, here it is the new one which caught my fancy.

OK, the scenic part is a little small, but I don´see any other way to get more operation into those 7 feet something I have available.  It is not the G&D, but I have given up to cramp that layout into the space I have! Laugh I think I am getting closer to what I want! Probably need to mirror it, though...

 Good rainy/cloudy morning.

Well its a basement day.  Can't do much when its raining outside.  I hope to work on the ACL hopper today, and maybe finish up the other two hoppers.

Jim........I'm glad we don't have to pay taxes on items like that.   If I lived where I would have to, I guess my hobby would be on the back burner.   You never know, we might have something like that years to come Whistling.

Good morning all. Just coffee please. Busy day today. Church bookwork, pay the bills, drive to Springfield to pay the fish bill......Saaaay, since I'm in there and it is my task to pick up a couple CO/Fire alarms for the Parsonage,(me too, mine's expired also.Oops) I'll juuuust happen to be at Menard's. Home of the $5 sheet of OSB. THAT will bring the total rebuild cost to $27 and 53 United States pennies. (well $55 if you count the stuff I put on the Gift card I received for Christmas. But I'm not)

Nittany- Congratulations on the maiden voyage! Looking forward to mine as well for this go around.

Ulrich- I like the new version. I know yo like scenery, but at least with this you will have something to do. I started out two starts ago thinking having something to do other than watching the trains go round was not important. I was wrong. Don't forget to keep in mind how your next extension will fit in as you create this one. ARE YOU CRAZY!? Us? Tire of looking at pictures? You better sit down man.

Gotta get a move on. I want to fit the piece of foam yet before I leave, then I can clean up the room some before work. Toodle Loo and....

Have a Great Day!!!
