Good morning all,

No MRR activity this weekend, spent the time rearranging furniture in the house.

Rob, I tell you what those old Ahearn Blue box locomotives just plain last forever.  I have a GP7 I got for Christmas in 1980 that is still a great unit.

Nittany Lion, looks like we need an interchange between us! The L.S. &W operates between Buffalo, NY and Chicago with a line going from Ashtabula, OH past Pittsburgh to a PA Coal mine.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a short stack of buckwheat pancakes.  What?  Oh, sure some of THAT Maple syrup from the North of me would be great!  And don't forget my dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug please. I'll go sit in the back and keep warm by the stove.

Another very, in Barry's words, "dull day" here in the Finger Lakes.  Light rain falling from a band of showers moving across the area this morning.  Should clear a bit by early afternoon they say.  Currently 36°F out there.  I may light the wood stove for a while to take the chill off.

Nice to see some old faces lately THAT have been missing for a while.

I think I will post a new track plan with the possible revisions in a day or two.  I am thinking about adding a stone quarry of some kind at the top of Bare Mountain THAT would generate some revenue for the SLO&W.  Need to find some old photos of quarries in this area back in the early 20's.  I will aslo be able to put in a passing siding in the loop at the top.  I does mean using a 20"r curve to do it.  But there should be no problem given small locos and 40' equipment.  I'll be playing around with it instead of w*rking outside.......Whistling

Jim I took a look at the program you linked to.  Looks like a good one!  The biggest plus for it as far as I can see is the 3D capability.  I probably will stick with Empire Express at this point in the game as it does most everything I need to have for what I am doing.  Thanks for thinking of me!

Well if I am going to start a fire in the stove, I best do it!  So, I'll catch you all later!

 Good Afternoon,

it is still dull outside - a day to stay inside and do lots of useful things - like planning the train room! Smile,Wink, & Grin

Thought I just share it with you - my layout occupies less than 7 % of that room!

... but the best thing is, Petra approves to my plan! Thumbs Up Btw, I mirrored my plan.

Chloe, whatever the chowhounds will be having, it´s on me! I´ll have a coffee, blond and sweet, and a slice of that cherry crumble pie.

CUL!

Good morning. It's 52 and sunny. The high will be in the mid 60's and it will be partly cloudy.

I've had my twice daily antibiotic treatment (8 am to 10 am and 8 pm to 10 pm) so I at least have that out of the way for now. I'm not getting around very good today so I likely won't be online much today.

Ulrich.......That layout doesn't take up to much space!!  Looks real good.

 Jeff........Take it easy!!

Here's a few pictures of my hopper.  Not a rust bucket, but still has that "used" look.

Afternoon folks!

Still dull here in the Finger Lakes.  Zoe, bowl of tomato soup and a Beef on Weck if you please and a Dr. Pepper.

LSWrr

Ray,

What about a timber cutting camp at the top??

THAT's what I'm getting rid of.  It just doesn't fit the bill for it.  Doesn't look right, and is one of the "left overs" of what I did 25 years ago......  I think a small quarry would be a very good addition and a revenue generator for the line.

Hey ya'll

Still stuck in college, waiting for my next class.

Rob, Whoops my bad.

Robby, nice hoppers. I really like the newer ones that aren't rust buckets. Might be because it's what I'm trying to shoot for.

Jim,, so it's really the "show me your money" state? Laugh Florida is the same way.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good afternoon... Zoe? Double cheeseburger basket with a large Cherry RC please 'n thank-you...although, THAT Beef on Weck looks good... Nah, I'll stick with the tried and true!

ROBBY P: Another masterpiece. Yup, not a rust-bucket, but still looks like it's been on the rails for a few years!Thumbs Up

ULRICH: I think the latest is the best yet (your British layout plans). I keep thinking "play value" is the key...like you said, otherwise it becomes a static diorama. Not much "fun" in those.  I think THAT's an underlying..."fear," in the back of my mind. I'll eventually build something, it'll take a lot of time, effort, and money to build...and then it'll just be a large dust-collector!

One un-mentioned hazard of this hobby: it is easy to get very...neurotic...about a lot of aspects of it!!! From "analysis paralysis" to "construction frustration." A head-shrinker could have a field-day, maybe even write a book!!!

I managed to slap a little paint on the walls in the RR room, another coat of primer as I re-do what was done 4 or 5 years ago. Like I told the Wife: when I'm done, it's either going to look "better" than it did...or it'll be a major cluster-*** and I'll end up taking the sledgehammer and ax and removing the entire section of the house!!!

Hmmm, Rerun just walked by, dragging the sledgehammer...he has his "I'm going to go and hide this now" look on his fuzzy face... Took me forever to find it after the last time he hid it from me.

Plans for today: 1) try to line-up some interviews for articles (so-far, looking kinda flat this week), or 2) slap some more paint in the RR room (deciding on motivation level today), or 3) try to craft an article from last week's school board meeting (split decision on a spending policy reading), or 4) take a good, long nap until Fire Dept. training tonight (sounding REALLY good), or 5) w**k some more on the roundhouse roof. Maybe a combination of all of the above. Oh, and Rerun wants to go sit on the deck some more...sunshine and close to 60 (F) today...he's loving it!

Have a good'un...

Coffee in a  SANTA FE  mug, please.

***Robby, really like the lighter weathering of that hopper. It's good to mix in some like this with your outstanding rust buckets.Thumbs UpThumbs Up

Upon checking on the 5 trees I started last night, a couple of the clumps have already come off. Will opt for a touch of strait elmers or hot glue on all future trees. For these, I'll turn them upside-down and add some strait elmers next, before proceeding to add more stuff to them.

Have a great day y'all.

 Hi,

I just came here for a nightcap before I call it a day and join Petra watching TV. How about a RBF, Chloe?

Robby P. -  as usual, I am just awed by your work - I wish I had a way to send you all my coaches, carriages and engines (that´s cars and locos in AE) in the future for a weathering job. You are so much better than some of the "experts" in those bespoke forums.

ChrisEight BallYeah!!, the last plan is the best - for the moment Mischief. No, I won´t change - I´ll leave as it is. Plenty of operation and a little bit of scenery as well - just a "scenic shunting puzzle", but quite OK. I will stop fiddlin´ around with the plan, don´t want to risk to turn nuts.Just because there is no money left for shrink... Smile,Wink, & Grin

See you tomorrow!

Afternoon ya'll

Got a new GP20 HH with sound and DCC and a pair of atlas centerflows in the mail today. I've been working on painting the walkways black and it went well; except for  getting the handrails off. in hindsight, I could have left them one and masked them off; I'll remeber that next time. Doubt walthers has any spares left, anyone used smokey valley stancions before?

Robby, the rust on the box is that innovative solutions stuff right?

Afternoon diners!

Chloe a RBF to tide me over to dinner.

I found it!  Yep I know what I will put at the top of Bare Mountain....  A hole!  Aka, Seneca Stone Quarry.  It was a limestone quarry located in Fayette, NY between Seneca and Cayuga, South of what for the moment is Seneca Falls (they vote on whether they want to dissolve the village or not this week.....).  Limestone would have been in demand for everything from building materials (many of the railroad retaining walls and bridge abutments around here are built of the stuff), ballast, and pulverized, it was and is used as lime for agriculture.  You can see it here.  I should be able to do some selective compression and come up with something looking similar to this at least.  And lots of photos to get the color and texture right as well.  This will also let me have more switching at the top and add the passing track as well.

I have a Cub Pack Committee meeting tonight so I have to get some things done before then.  Catch you all later!

I watched a show on RFDTV earlier today about Colorado narrow gauge steam. To say that I was riveted to my seat is an understatement. I have my dinner ready now and my evening bout with the antibiotics begins in a little over an hour. After that I won't feel like doing much of anything. 1500 mg of Vancomycin at one sitting is a pretty big shot. With that and all the other stuff I have to take I'll be pretty tired and not worth much of anything to anyone. That being said, I'll be back again sometime tomorrow morning.

Good evening all, just a hot ham and cheese and an order of fries with a RBF.  Sitting here with Heather in my lap, she's watching Mulan, I'm here, about to go and look through all the CSX SD40-2's and figure out exactly what # series I need to change mine over to.  I believe that I can go to the 84xx and 88xx series and get the engines that have nose mounted brake wheels and a cab mounted headlight (since the model that I have in real life has a nose light and a jack-style brake set up on the nose).  I know that I'm being a RC, but hey if I'm gonna have it set up like it is, least I can do is have it numbered right.

Today I had a little fun, got to put a radiator in a Dodge Intrepid, then helped the shop owner figure out what was wrong with a GMC 3/4-ton van that wouldn't hold idle once the engine was warm (PCM failure), and then went to crank a Ford Taurus that supposedly just needed the a/c compressor replaced.....it wouldn't crank.  Called the customer and found out that while we thought the car drove here and the customer gave the impression that it did, the customer told us that the car started, pulled half-way onto a trailer, then died and wouldn't restart, so yeah....tomorrow means finding out why the car doesn't have spark (she's got fuel, just no spark, possibly a damaged crank position sensor from when the belt came off), and then maybe, just maybe I can get paid for the job that I did two weeks ago (head job on a 99 Yukon....customer hasn't picked up yet)...

Well, that's enough for me, time to go picture digging.

Good Evening All,

Nothing for me please - just stopping in on my way to finish packing. Off to Sebring tomorrow at 0 dark thirty, again.

Rob - how are you gluing the foam to the armature? I've had good luck spraying hairspray and shaking in a baggie or better yet spraying weather strip adhesive on the armature and then doing the shaky thing. I used 3M adhesive spray because we had some at the shop for upholstery. After it was done I could use the hairspray for some light coloring with fine ground foam in various shades.

Catch y'all tomorrow,   J.R.

Evening all. Chloe, can I please have a RBF.

So, once again, time has escaped me. A whole weekend with nothing to do, and I was barely in here, and got next to nothing done. What else is new?

Got practice after school tomorrow, followed by Confirmation. Which means I have to leave practice early, which, of course, as always, is a bad thing. Darn... Wink

Guess that's about it. Catch ya later.

Good evening, plate of cheeseburgers please 'n thank you...with a big 'ol Cherry RC Cola.

Back from Fire Dept. training, we hosted Storm Spotter Training, with a cute little gal from the NWS out of the Quad Cities. She was...very...easy on the eyes! Gave probably the best storm spotter class I've had to sit through: good use of humor, good use of the PowerPoint/videos...and easy on the eyes. She had an awesome case study from the May, 2008 F5 THAT hit Parkersburg, Iowa... including some radar reading tricks I wasn't aware of.

Did I mention, she was a real cutie???

Apparently, I'm now "qualified to identify" swirly things in the sky. I even got the "SkyWarn" sticker for my truck.

When talking about tornado strength, she showed the video (popular on YouTube) of the UP train in Illinoisssssssss, which was hit by one a year or two ago. This is the video, shot from the trailing unit, with trees flying overhead, the covered hopper first-out blowing off the tracks...and the tank car rocketing down the tracksShockShockShock You could easily tell the ones who hadn't seen this yet...the "OH S........!" from the audience gave 'em away! Laugh

Hey, anybody heard anything out of Nik.n ??? He would've loved her next-to-last slide, it had a nice shot of a Thunderbolt siren on it.

RAY: THAT quarry looks interesting, for a hole in the ground...should keep you busy what with trying to color/tint the various layers of earth and what-not.

BAMA CSX: Careful Pally! Once you go the RC route...it's hard to turn back! I "had" to repaint a pair of "special edition" Athearn SD40-2s, because they were not in the right number series for the details...wrong radiator grills, brake wheel on the nose, nose length.... So, they went from "Falcon" service paint to Zito yellow, last order units.

AZTEC EAGLE: Have you noticed, the stuff you "rocked out" to is now on the "classic rock" stations? Or heard on "flashback weekends?" Our local "old-fart" AM station is playing more and more stuff I recognize...and I'm only 40!!! I have this "wonderful" vision, of sitting around in my wheelchair in the nursing home...with the rest of the old farts, and we're listening to KISS, Def Leppard, Led Zepplin... on the nursing home Muzak!!!!!!!! Shock I knew I was getting older when the pep band, at a high school basketball game, was playing "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne...and I realized, NONE of the kids performing it were even born yet when it was a hit!!!

A few more gray hairs just popped out of my head....

Burgers are ready...I'm gonna have a seat at the RC...see who-else makes it in this evening...

Good evening.

JimCG ... Thanks for the offer to attend chuch in your town. Who are you? The Cape Crusader?

Don't forget atheists are a non-prophet group.

It's kind of a long story about the problem at church. There are some people who think God's house is restricted on which of God's children should be in God's house. I told them how they were acting, and they were not receptive to my opinion.

Jeff.. .. I feel badly you are having such a rough time. I pray for you.

I'm having adventures with my DCC wireless. My frustrations could lead to my tossing the whole thing into the lake.

It's good to see everybody here as always.

A short story for you all.

Three cowboys were hanging out in the bunkhouse. "I know that smart aleck Tex," said the first. "He's going to start bragging about that new foreign car he bought as soon as he gets back."

”Not Tex," the second cowboy replied. "He'll always be just a good ol' boy. When he walks in, I'm sure all he'll say is hello."

"I know Tex better than either of you," said the third. "He's so smart, he'll figure out a way to do both. Here he comes now." Tex swung open the bunkhouse door and shouted, "Audi, partners!"

I knew I was getting older when the pep band, at a high school basketball game, was playing "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne...and I realized, NONE of the kids performing it were even born yet when it was a hit!!!

I'm only 28 (well 27 years 11 months and eight days) and it seems like this sort of thing is already happening to me almost daily.  I can't imagine its going to get any better.  A coworker (same age) and I were talking about stuff we remembered.  I said something about how in elementary school once a month we'd have a skating party at the roller rink.  I vividly described falling down and hurting myself, and pointed out that I remembered the song that was playing at the time was Atomic by Blondie.  Another coworker had the nerve to ask me what Blondie was!

Then I went off describing things like ditto sheets, the Soviets, handwritten papers for school, records, electric typewriters, long distance phone calls, smoking on airliners, and all sorts of stuff 19 year olds have never heard of.
