If the layout is on fire I doubt I’ll be sticking around to sniff the fumes.

That brings me to my next favorite movie quote: “I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue!”

OK. That seals it. Blue or pink stuff is what I'll use. Like Jeff, I use(d) the expanded, (I guess the fancy name for what we call "bead board", or so I assumed), and have had no problems. Initially I was going to use the blue (or pink) stuff on the rebuild, then the thrifty side of me thought, why not stick with the cheap stuff. It is messy and doesn't cut clean, but a little drywall mud which I would use anyway and, good as can be. WELL, I never thought about the chemical reaction part. Guess I'll go back to the original plan. OK talked me into it. Or out of it. Whatever.

Thanks for all the input. Next orders are on me. (virtual speaking of courseWhistling)

EDIT: Finished reading Ray's post after "use the extruded"(paraphrase),after I posted. I see what he means now about using the term beaded. Explains Jeff's confusion. Jeff, I was referring to the bead board. Triiiiied to sound professional for once and look what happens.Laugh

Drywall mud takes forever to dry if you apply it with any thickness and sometimes it shrinks and cracks as it dries.  Dap sells plaster in the same size containers as powder drywall mud at HD or Lowe's and it's a fraction of the cost by volume as the cardboard half gallon milk containers of plaster of paris.

GMTRacing
The extruded foam board is useful structurally and I used it under the layout in 2" thick form with just a piece of 1/4" luan (the cheap stuff) glued beneath it. It was strong enough to support the layout on 16" center brackets. I'd use stronger plywood under a yard however as the much greater weight might cause a sag.

Thanks J.R. That answers my next question!!

Lee- Yes, I found that out. For some things I found that drywall mud in the little tubs is handy such as filling cracks and it has served well for some roads. Depending on what I'm doing I spent more time cleaning the container to mix another batch of plaster and went to premix drywall mud. But For larger things I would use the plaster. And yes I do mean the cheap stuff. Big Smile

The eastern thought professor's office was just down the hall from the sculpture room. He's walking by one afternoon, I figure I'll display my brilliance, my complete grasp of the concepts we'd been covering during the semester. I proudly grabbed a block of wood and said "Hey look, I've got the uncarved block of Zen!"

He says..."That's Dao (or is it Tao?)." Shock I'm mortified. I'm seeing my grade for the semester vaporizing in front of me. He then starts laughing and walks on down the hallway. I'm still in full "oh-s....... oh-s.........." mode...and he's laughing more and more, harder and harder. I passed...which for a gen-ed class was the sole goal. But man...he always chuckled a bit when he'd see me in the sculpture room after THAT little show...

lol, that's a good story right there. Readin the different websites etc. getting my facts I realized that stuff is REALLY far out there, lol.

well, good day at school today. do have a good deal of homework that's due over the course of this week though. I'll get as much as I can done today and continue working on it through the week.

Afternoon all, I was all happy that I'd found the camera cord and I was finally going to be adding the pictures up of some of the railcars that I have and would be willing to let go to a new home, so I plug the cord into the computer and get a big, fat  NOTHING!  Camera is dead, so off to the charger I'm about to be going to get a little juice in it.  Oh well, there went that idea.  So far the day of nothing has been good, I even managed a nap about 30 minutes ago.  Now all I'm doing is staring out the living room window into the woods...even saw a deer just a few minutes ago (grumbles about deer season ending yesterday).  Welp tonight should be a good dinner, grilled salmon marinated in brown sugar, vegetable oil, soy sauce, salt, lemon pepper, garlic powder, and a little water, with rice, dinner rolls, and salad.  Dinner should be at/around 6:30-6:45....I am looking forward to it.

Guess what? I'm back in the dating game after a 2-year haitus. Wonder if having a job now helped that lol.

The car seems to be running better. I've gone 50 miles on about 1/8 of a tank. only way to be sure that is accurate is to fill it up

Lee, I'd be grabbing a fire extenguisher if the layout caught fire

Good evening to all, I see we had meatloaf for supper tonight, a new recipe that Ryan invented.

More work done on layout today, riser are almost all in place for mountain line, and the lift out bridge is all done. I ran out of 2" risers, and 3/4" risers, so I am awaiting a resupply from WS.

I see the guys had a lengthy discussion regarding foam board ( blue or pink ). I use that extensively on this layout, much easier to work with and make scenery whether it is ponds, streams, mountains, waterfalls, gullies etc. Also very handy to bury wiring.

Later guys,

Good EveningSmile

I spent my day in the basement redoing my Williston Terminal Yard area.Whistling I ended up tearing out about 80% of it and now am going to spend the rest of the week basically rejigging the service area for my RDC's as well as a couple of holding/storage tracks for graincars.Whistling

AHH me. I should have thought about the location of the dang yard to begin with because now with all the construction destruction done I'm now seeing why it was not working out too wellBanged Head----remember Johnson's Axiom pt4a? Well, pt4b says that width of table WILL NOT equal width of workspace useable. So back to the drawing table with me I go. DunceWhistling

------------------------------------------------------

As for the extruded foam issue, I'm supporting that stuff. Regular styrofoam leaves one H^*% of a mess and does not do well over a long time either--it does not age well at all. Besides, one can really model more effectively using carvers and such with the pink/blue stuff..Smile

My HO diorama will be built up on just the pink stuff instead of wood base because I need portability for that thing----considering all else.Whistling

Welp---Chloe, I'll have a coupla big juicy quadruplex greaseburger with mozzarella and portobello mushrooms and a platter of poutine as well as a giant RBF pleaseMischiefDinnerSmile----I'm going to the corner booth and check out the new MR for a bitSmile

Yep, I are.

Just a RBF for me, still recovering from the feast we had for dinner tonight.  Grilled salmon marinated in brown sugar, soy sauce, salt, garlic powder, vegetable oil, lemon pepper, and water with rice, mashed red new potatoes, and dinner rolls.  Well, still waiting on the camera battery to charge, so I'll get the pictures up tomorrow.

I'm going to be hanging out in and around for a little while, so I'll be in and out for a bit.

But tomorrow!!!

Great job on the Roundhouse so far Chris.

Speaking of roundhouses, Lee, did you do ok on yours?

Prayers for those in need.

Good morning all,

Sam I took a different approach, when I was married my wife and I went shopping for houses as I neared the end of my Coast Guard career.  I told the realtor I needed a two car garage and a full basement with a center descending stairs. The access to the basement will be one direction without curves or bends.  I told my wife (ex-wife now) that I didn’t care about anything other than those two stipulations.  I did have to remind my wife at the time that those two spaces in the house were mine from time to time.

One day my current Girlfriend asked why I got divorced. Jokingly I told her the reason I was divorced was because my ex-wife came to me and said:” the trains go or I go”.   I really thought she knew I was joking, or I hope she knew I was joking but every two to three months she buys me a random something or other for the layout or train related item to show her support of my hobby.  I was going to reaffirm that I was kidding, but who am I to interfere with other’s beliefs?

Good morning. It's 44 and cloudy. The high is forecast to be 57 and it will be partly cloudy. According to the weather guesser the chance of rain is zip. He said that yesterday and it rained off and on all day.

Went out yesterday and paid those bills that have to be paid in person. Thankfully there's only a few of them. Most of the others I paid online. I spent part of the day at my parent's place getting their new fax machine set up for them and setting up a new printer/scanner on the computer. For that I got treated to dinner at Ryan's in DeRidder. I have to go to town today for my once a week visit to the foot doc. Hopefully I can part company with this wound vac. I'll go from there to Wal-Mart to get the grocery shopping done.

I’m still working on the roundhouse and the machine shop.  I hope to get some time to work on it tonight.  I have the floors and the center supports installed and the exterior walls painted.  I need to paint the mortar and lintels on the outside and install the windows before I put the walls up.  This Walther’s kit the walls are two pieces so you have bricks on both sides.  I’m wondering what color to paint the inside walls, do I go with the common pea soup green interior that was pretty common or paint the walls a two-tone grey and green?

Good Morning All,

18F when I drove in this morning. I'll have a regular to go please. Still thrashing to finish up enough to get the truck out of here to Florida. Looking much better than this time yesterday though. I ditto the earlier extinguisher comments but wonder - how many of us have an extinguisher handy in the layout area? And is it ABC powder type or some other? My plan for now is to get a CO2 type (just paid $150.00 for a large one for the trailer) so I don't cover the layout in white corrosive powder if I need to use it.

Vincent - glad the car is coming together. Did you start on the bodywork?

Springfield show was a hoot. Spent the two days at the museum booth - sold a bunch of O track and a lot of the surplus cars we had. Picked up a bunch of scenic trees for the O display so we can continue detailing it. Got some detail parts and such for myself and a quartet of FGE refridgerator cars three marked for New Haven and one FGE alone from Intermountain. Went over and bugged the Rapido guys to see when the NH Osgood Bradley cars would finally be released (May and I'll probably see them in June).  As usual lots and lots of neat stuff to see but not so many bargains as last year.

I also finally got to eat at the Steaming Tender that Dick talks about all the time. Great food and service and it's in an old B&A depot right on the tracks in Palmer Mass. While we were there we saw the Amtrak Lakeshore Limited go by as well as a CSX freight. Pretty cool stuff. There are engines and cars tied up all around it plus a breakfast car on a siding. looks much like you'd imagine Elliots to be in the real world.

Well the rest are strolling in so it's time to pick up tools and get to it. I see Inch found our trail clear enough and dropped in.  Anyone heard from PC lately? Hope his missus is ok.   CUL, J.R.

 Good Morning,

I am glad I made it back home from the GULAG today. It took me over 2 hours this time. St. Peter is dumping that white stuff on us like mad - over a foot within less than an hour! Some areas here in northern Germany are completely cut off. A lot of people got stranded on the island of Hiddensee, as the ferry is stuck in the ice. The promised airlift by helicopter was canceled due to the storm we have.

There is only one single word for this:

YUCCH!

... and no end in sight!

There are some more ideas in my head for my projected shelf layout. I will try to put them into a track plan idea in the next days. I like my current plan, but I have the time to look for something better.

Have a safe day, everyone!

Morning ya'll

Rember what I said yesterday about the dating thing? I got back into it big time, already 2 confirmed dates this week, and I may possilby be going up to 4. Having options for once is goodLaugh

JR, I've done a little bit of priming and have taken a slide hammer to some areas already. The passenger's side rear and driver's side front are pretty bad so I still have a lot more to do. The rubber trim on the car is starting to peel up and nothing seems to hold it down so far. I'm thinking I could bend it back into shape along with the front bumper by slowly using a heat gun.

I still have some parts searching to do. I need to figure out what type and color wheels I have (silver cobra of some sort) so I can buy 17x8s for the fronts. I have the 17x9s carried over from my last car, but they are an inch too wide for the front. Than and I'm wanting an aluminum driveshaft. I already bought a new clutch since I can smell mine.

Bama, you meant about the fire extinguisher, right?

Good morning.  Its cold, and maybe a dusting of snow.

I didn't do much at all yesterday.  Today I hope to try to work on the layout some.  I might even try making  a small business for the layout.

Hope everybody has a good morning.

Lee,

Thanks for the video of the engine being loaded onto the trailer. Not too long ago I saw a similar video, but with a different method. In that one, they trenched out an area for the trailer and that gave them a level track onto the trailer. For the life of me though, I can't remember where I saw it.

Good Morning. Coffee, 2 eggs over medium, hashbrowns, cover that with salsa and a side of Biscuits and gravy please. Thank you.

Last evening I developed my first real computer problem. As I was on wikepedia and then tried to stop back in here to take a peak in the window, suddenly my favorites wouldn't expand. then when I try to type in the address bar, a series of rolling dashes just fill the space. It says after that that I need to install windows search4. I managed to get to the windows site through links that did not require expanding folders or type links and downloaded and installed. Seemed to work, but this morning is doing the same thing and the thing no longer says to download anything. Virus and Spy/adware programs are running as we speak. Nothing on the computer that requires typing an entry works. It al does the same thing. Email password space, word, IE adress bars everything. I am currently on Brendas computer and when the scans are complete, I will switch keyboards, as it seems only to affect the areas that allow or require typing. If that doesn't work I will restore the thing back to Sunday to be sure and see what happens there.

Anyway all this will not keep me from my layout. No sir, I don't have to babysit the computer, it'll take care of itself. Alaways has.

Lee-  You are correct. Do NOT crush the poor girls beliefs. It's for her own good you know. Sounds good on the replacement round house. Personally I'd go with the two tone light on top scheme, however I'm not sure when they started that. May have been around forever. I'm not sure what goes with your era. How'd the ebay one go? decent? Not asking how much you got, just if you feel you made out at least ok.

J.R.- Got one (fire ext) everywhere needed but there. Never though of it. Good point. I guess since the layout room is next to the furnace room, they can share a fire extinguisher. The doors open to the same area.

Vincent- 4 dates in one week? With 4 different girls? Oh my, I can barely deal with one. And I'm used to her. EDIT: (said loudly and clearly) But I LOVE her!

Inch- Glad to see you're still kickin' ! Beginning to get a bit worried there. 20-21 eh, hmmm. Can't think now, but I'll keep that in my head. I know what you mean on the "things coming up"

Jeff- I been meanin to ask you. The Ryan's in DeRidder. How is that place. I tell you the one in Springfield..., we avoid that place. Oh we go there occasionally, but man that place.... not dirty. That's not the right term.  But the desert bar for instance, looks like a bunch of monkeys got in there and had at it. The food bar is a bit better, if they have to refill a food bucket, they may wipe up a spill, but only if it;s within an easy arms reach. They never seem to clean up after the slop hogs that frequent buffets. It's like, they have rounds every 2 hrs to clean the mess es..'s up and what happens in between, well it'll wait till it's time to wipe it up in an hour or so.Grumpy

Well it's now later than I planned. Usually happens. So I best get a move on.

Have a Great Day!!!

It's not a fancy place but more of what would could be considered middle of the road. It's clean and well maintained.
