Sign - Welcome

We have reached our new track. The switcher has been uncoupled and Chloe, Flo and Zoe are glad to welcome you at the new location. Vinnie went off to buy some supplies - I wonder what he is up to. Flo just told me that he will be buying a sign "No Catapults Allowed In Here!" Big Smile

Here is the trace of bread crumbs to the old place!

Morning all. Morning Ulrich. Good job. I see you can handle a steam engine just fineThumbs Up.

Gotta take Brenda to get the company car serviced in Sherman after the trucks load out. The manager wants no discrepencies if the car needs warranty work so he has a "real shop" do the oil changes. LOL, oh well, can't say I blame him and glad he does if there ever was a to be a dispute. Doubt it though. Then bookwork for the church. Then hopefully home to....... not gonna say it. Then work at 4.

It's raining and I'm thinking of redesigning my whole Empire.Banged Head Well, except for that one part.Smile,Wink, & Grin

What is it? Cherry torte?

None for me. I'm one of those people who is actually allergic to cherries.

Good morning. It's 36 and sunny. That barbed wire fence between here and the north pole has done fell down again. The high is projected to hit 65 and it will be clear and sunny.

Nothing special happening today, just another day with my feet up most likely. I may get some light layout work done as well. There's still some stuff to be cleared off and put away. It's amazing how little it takes to clutter things up. I have everything I need to put the diner in place on the layout. Now I just have to get to the point that I can gey under the layout to the larger of the two access holes (the park in this case) to do the work. That will also give me a chance to clean the AC filter. Maybe in another week or two.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a nice big slice of the cherry whatever it is THAT Ulrich brought in this morning to go along with a pot of dark roast coffee in a FGLK cup.  I'll go sit in the front booth and enjoy the new view.  Sure was classy to see this old girl moving the diner!

As Barry said about the weather!  We have dark, gray, a bit of fog, and lots of rain today here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 54Ā°F outside under a flood watch.......  Got just under a half inch of rain last night.

I see Zoe bringing my breakfast so I'll be busy for a bit.  Catch you all a bit later!

Jim,  Keith - I'm sure someone else will have answered your question by now, but on the icing platforms, somebody in here (Lee, maybe?..) posted drawings of the building and platform for icing. Maybe they'll see this and post the link for you again.

Well Jim, I'm getting there.  But I'll tell ya this much, I finally found where to look up and hopefully buy some Armstrong's books.  http://index.mrmag.com/tm.exe?opt=I&MAG=BOOK&MO=6&YR=1998&output=5

And in there, there is a book.. or title.. What is is And What It Does  I think that might help.. and for others out there.  When I think of all the material I've read,  I dont' think I've done as much when I was in College.

Jeff,  Thanks so much, I understand~!  That was a great explanation of track wiring.. and bus.  I truly understand now... lol.  I feel like its so valuable to the beginner,  I also want to copy it word for word.. and put it in my thread.  But in truth,  its more like Todd said:

"Aw don't sweat it. Getting a couple of wires crossed is about the easiest thing to do when wiring a layout. Or doing anything to a layout except look at it for that matter. ..."

Todd, exactly.  But getting back to Jeff.. and you~  All I wanted to do is hook up the wires.. and check the flow of juice throught tracks.. and see if I did it correctly.  And so~  by hooking up the wires at opposite ends... everything seems to function.. as I had hoped for.  I am at that point, where I have to remove 1 Electrofrog,  or do the surgery I believe Der John knows how.. and convert it to and insulufrog..lol.  Yes, I shall call Der John's surgery technique the "Insulufrog"

I also went out and bought some goodies.  Here's a pic.. I just love the wire.100_0674.jpg picture by Blazzin55

I figure.. Todd's ideal?... Red for Right?  lol.  Also my Dremel cutting tool.. about 16 US dollars.. and of course the Volt Meter.. which now brings me to ... TB Danny..

"Keith, if you're worried about crossed wires, there is a simple way to check.  If it's a track block in question, you'll need to hook one of the voltimeter's clips to the rail on one side of the insulating joint, and the other clip to the same rail on the other side of the insulator.  If you get a reading of 0 volts, then it's correct - any other reading means there's a voltage differential." LOL
Well last night.. we did get a reading of zero... she couldn't accept that... my wife. "We spent 20 dollars for this?"  lol.   Jeanne my wife, was all concerned about it.. cuz we got a zero.  She was up early this morning.. reading all.... ALL about Volt meters.  This morning she was showing me the correct setup for 'Current'.  One in a million that gal.  She helped me on the copper pipe leak,  soldering and blowtorch..and all.  Electrical.. brakes.. car maintainance check.. she's too much... lol.

But I thank you all for all your help and concerns,  without it,  I probably would have burned it all for heat by now... and started on my 'fiddleyard' since thats all I wanted in the first place... lol.  Bye Keith

Small note:  Jim,  after testing the track.. I found many other things.  One, a person should always check the staging area/track before,  BEFORE you lay down cork.. and / or any thing else.  I have found.. slight 'dibbets' in the track.. slight things I can correct before its final.. and too late.  You can actually see how well a train runs on the track.. and see how realistic it is.  If I see a 'wobble' on the engine as it goes over a certain area.. there's the clue~    You think I going to miss anything?  Let me know OK?  I don't want to find out the hard way~.. I'm half the time.. trying to go the hard way.. looking for the easy way.  ok.. bye all.  Keith

Good morning.  I thought we were getting close to moving.

Had to take the wife to a "walk in clinic" this morning.  She hasn't been feeling to good lately.  She got some meds, and hopefully she will feel better.

Well...............I guess I will post a  picture of what I look like.  I believe someone said awhile back to do that at the new move.

Here I am !!!!!!!!  Its a older picture.   The work bench isn't that clean, but I look the same.

Egg whites cooked up in a bunch of sweet onions & hashbrowns, please.

Not much to report on. Waiting on a load of hay to be delievered. The ground here is oozing water from all the rain. Tried 3 times to cross the middle of a pasture only to spin the tires in mud and have to use the loader to back out. OK Mother Nature, we've had enough rain now!

Hope everyone is doing well these days.

Afternoon folks......

Nothing good about it so far.....  Went to feed the kitties at noon time and I notice the mat I have their food dish on by the casing around where the chimney is is wet!  Yep an old leak THAT I thought was fixed (and was for many years) has decided to open up again.  So I expect a roofer here in about a half hour to 1. find out where the water is coming in, 2. how much it will cost to repair, 3. how long before he can do it (most likely today), and 4. how much damage has been done to the house.

Got down to the layout room long enough to turn on the heat and lights.  No sooner started to do a little scenery and had just put some white glue in place when the phone rang and it was my son popping in to check on some moving stuff.  he followed me down to the layout while I finished where I had the glue....

In fact I just remembered I haven't washed out the brush....  Later!

"Hi Chloe~  yes.. coffee.. and keep it comin"

Ok.. for all of you who are bored stiff,  just dying to get your teeth into something New and totally exciting.  I have been reading.. and reading.. if you told me my eyes are bleeding.. I'd believe you~.  I'm at the point now.. where I have to make some .. some more decisions.  I am at a fork in the road .. concerning my first staging area,  I need to learn how.. and decide if this is the correct method.

DC ONLY please no DCC. (DCC will be my next layout soon as I get this one done..lol) (Peco's ONLY)  But if you have a main line running.. and a side rail also.  Don't you have a choice of what turnouts to use?

1.  If you use a Electro verses the Insul.. doesn't that cut off power to the main?  And if you used a Insul.. you would have power running through both.. but could get by, by just cutting the rails?  (I want to separate the power from the mains and from the yard)(diff.transformers)

1.  I have Electrofrogs.. that I like for their looks.. but would rather have the function of power running through both.. with a cut in the rails to separate.   I might need to re-wire them.  Am I barking up the wrong tree here looking at this site?  http://www.wiringfordcc.com/switches_peco.htm
Or would it just easier to replace the Electro's with Insul's.. and perform cuts.???  I'd appreciate any comments.  I proabably don't know what I'm talking about anyways.~  Thanks again.. all of you!  I just want you all to know.. I'm reading.. and studying.. "Shaken the bush Boss!"  I'm not just coming for answers.  Keith

Sheesh, I work my first overnight shift and what do you do?!?  You go and move the diner on me... lucky thing Ulrich was tossing remnants of one of the last catapults out the back as they went... or else I would not have found the place!!!

Speaking on that...  Take a gander at my latest contraption!!!   TaDa!!!  A Dogapult!!!  No pies in this baby!  Only hot dogs and beans!!!  (Don't worry, it is only for display purposes... NOT a permanent fixture here)

Well, my first day running passenger service went rather well... With a few "happenings"...  First, I get to Morrisville Yard and call the Yardmaster to get the track assignment for X392.  He tells me that X392 has been replaced with 7880, and that it had just left not more than 10 minutes prior! Humph!  So I ask him when and what is the next train to leave the yard.  He tells me that it will be 3800 (A local train, makes ALL stops) leaving the yard at 12:44am.  Train 3800 is the train I have to catch out of NY Penn to deadhead to Sunnyside yard, so that will not give me enough time to get all my paperwork and sign the register.  So, I drive to Newark Penn, park on the street in a location that is used solely (and unofficially) by NJ Transit employees on jobs just like mine! Well, what do I see on ALL the rest of the cars parked on this little stretch, THE CLUB, every last one but mine!  Obviously they are aware of something I wasn't, THE CRIME RATE! (I'll get back to my car, hopefully, later)  Anyway, I catch the next train out of Newark Penn, to NY Penn (everyone with me so far? Ok.)  I get there and head to the crew room arriving in the crew room about 1:40am ( I made DARN good time up the Turnpike, DON'T ASK, let's just say I could probably qualify to drive one of Jims cars now! LOL) Anyway, I sit in the crew room and wait for the new Employee Register to be issued, sign in and gather all my required paperwork, and wait for the crew (I signed the register about 10 minutes before the rest of the crew was supposed to be there.)  And I'm waiting, waiting... A Conductor turns to me and asks if I was the guy waiting for NY-02 (the job I'm working on)  I say yeah, he tells me that I'm supposed to deadhead on 3800 to the yard, which is where the crew is probably standing at that very moment... Well, it was on track 7, I hual butt, and get to the platform just intime to see the Markers disappear into the East River Tunnels heading for Queens and Susnnyside Yard!!! That was the last train to go to the yard for the next 4 hours, and the train that I am supposed to be on is getting back to NY Penn at 4:47am ( I think, my head is goo right now) Anyway, I met up with them when I they got back to NY Penn, and the day went so much better from there!  I will just be catching 3800 from the yard tonight!  Save myself a great deal of hassle, AND TOLLS!  WHOA... Sorry for such a LONG rant!!!  I'll keep you guys posted on my "progress" as the week goes on!

EDIT: I forgot to mention my car... It was fine, but a coworker is going to be peeved when he gets back to his NEW DODGE CHARGER, and finds the drivers side window SMASHED, the rear passenger side window busted and the truck PRYED open... Amazing, apparently my 2003 Hyundai Elantra looks enough like a P.O.S. that noone even LOOKED at it!  Thankfully, I will not have to park there again, at least for this assignment!

Todd- Isn't it amazing how we can read the same sentence, yet get two very different impressions on the "meaning" or "context" of the statement!  Lol...

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Afternoon.......

Roofer was here. I can choose from doing a temporary repair that will last a year or so ($75), replacing the chimney and repairing the main roof where it goes through ($450) which should last untill the roof needs replacing in a few years, Replacing the roof now with asphalt shinges ($5,950), or replacing the roof with a new style metal roof ($8,500).......  I went with the $450 chimney replacement.  Hopefully it will get done next week.  He put more tar around all the seams up there as a temporary fix.

I have been busy sorting Art and Poetry............. Grumpy

Catch you all later!

Good afternoon, I think... snowing here, not much but enough THAT there are now rollovers and multi-vehicle wrecks on my routes to tonight's school board meeting. Gee....THAT just inspires a warm/fuzzy feeling of glee about the upcoming drive!

Yep, I've checked...no postponement, they already had to reschedule from last week (which cost me valuable hours on my paycheck...). Weather guessers are calling for "a healthy inch" of snow... No self-respecting school board of directors would cancel for THAT!

The very first snowfall of the year...I can almost, ALMOST understand people not knowing how to drive, having to re-learn a few things. It's January. It's the end of the month of January...and they're still out there sailing along like it's 80 degrees and sunshine?????

WHY does it seem like our society in general has gotten stupid?

OK, there's my rant for the day....

SAM: Wow...glad you finally caught up with your crew and THAT your vee-hickle was intact upon your return. Here's hoping you have a lot easier and more relaxing trip into w**k tonight.

ULRICH: Thanks for ordering/supervising the move...job well done Sir! And, I'll take a slice of THAT cherry thing...Dinner

Have a good, SAFE rest of the day; I know I'm sure gonna try to....Whistling

Well, can't remember if I told y'all about the scrimmage yesterday, so anyways, I'll tell it again (pretty positive I didn't).

The first scrimmage was agaisnt Lexington, and we fared pretty well. I learned a lot and got some more experience. and then we scrimmaged Gilbert. That was called before the first half was over b/c it was abt to get real ugly and probably have a fight. It started when one Gilbert guy was getting smacked out of bounds b/c the try line (out of bounds line) was, well, pretty much invisible. And then in the scrum their 8 man picked it up and pretty much palm-punched our scrum half's nose (probably broke it; blood was spurting out apparently or something, and he had blood in his mouth etc.) and it just devolved from there. We'll see both those teams later in the season when we've got much more playing experience; lexington's scrum half is from Belgium and Gilbert was #1 int he state the past three years.

Sounds like a T-shirt I saw once, it said: "Give blood, play rugby."

Yer a brave lad...probably a bit "touched in the head,"Smile,Wink, & Grin, but a brave lad nonetheless SAWYER.

Good afternoon.... I just checked with THAT about staying home tonight (not going to Oxford for the board meeting). She looked out the window in Solon and said "oh my God, I didn't realize how bad out it is...yes, PLEASE, stay home!"

Well yes Ma'am!

Now, I get to worry about Loving Wife as she makes her way home. It isn't the snow (only about an inch), it's the 30 mph winds making white-outs, and freezing the snow as it blows across the road THAT's making things downright IDLH out there.

THAT's: Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health...for the non-OSHA among us.

On the RR front, I did a little trackplanning yesterday...stretching and relocating parts of the MR trackplan to fit my space. It mostly w**ks...needs a little "tweak" here and there. I'm not happy with the CCP yard, and haven't come up with anything I like for Quaker Oats yet. On paper, it looks like a lot of track, a lot of yard track...and in N-sane scale, it'd be great. In HO (which the plan is), it's a lot of track, but not a whole lot of capacity. But, the original plan was designed for 40' cars. I'm gonna have 39' single-bay Airslides, lots of 50-52' boxcars, 50-55' hoppers, and 40-50' tank cars; so I'm already compromising the capacity with longer stuff.

Fun. Really...lots and lots of fun.Banged Head

I got a little farther/further on the roundhouse today in-between weather/road updates. The goofy "cement" ramp on the front of the Atlas structure had vexed me. Originally, I dropped weathered sections of track in, and burried them to the tops of the rusted rails in dirt/gravel. Looked OK...but just kept bugging me. So...I dug out THAT crap, and put in DAP Bondex Patching Plaster. Looks much, much, much better!

Another "why didn't I do THAT the first time?" moment...

Chloe? Bucket of coffee please...yep, at the RC

Evening all. Chloe, I'll take a RBF, thanks.

I see we've moved again; thanks Ulrich for handling that.

I can't hang, sorry. It seems like every day, I have less and less time to spend on the forums...

=(

Good Afternoon, Zoe - How's the new place and location shaping up - what? Before the switcher got there, Vinnie shipped all the pieces of the pie-a-paults in a container heading back across the Pacific pond? Boy, that'll take a lonnnnnnngggg while for (ahem!...) certain parties to find and get back set up here. (Now I do recall one Diner who said something about he had lots of them, but I'm not sure what Vinnie's thoughts on that might be) Oops

Zoe, I'll have a Santa Fe mug and a slice of that delicious thing that Ulrich brought in from Petra's kitchen (I hope she's sharing her recipes with our cook in here), please. Thanks!

Somewhat breezy cool in Cape Girardeau today. Never did see the 'sn*w showers' that the weather prognosticators were talking about this morning, but I'm okay with that. Hoping they will be wrong on this Thursday's forecast also.

One nice thing about having Diners from 'Oz' to Germany is, when we need to move the Diner to a new location, there's always somebody who's likely to be up, no matter what time of the day or night it is. Yeah!! Thanks, Ulrich!

Sheesh, from looking at Sam's, Rob's and Ray's posts, this has NOT been a good day for some of you Diners! Wow!! Hope tomorrow goes MUCH better for you guys (and the rest of you, too).

And I hope you get better to where you can get your 'Diner' installed on your layout, Jeff!

A bit busy today at w**k, but THAT is not unusual for a Monday. Six clients in walk-in, plus a few phone calls. Thus, the late stop by the Diner...

Was going to backup my iTunes music folder to an external drive (with a bit less than 38GB on it). Found out THAT ain't enough room...Sigh I did get an answer on my question about a newer, bigger backup drive, though. And since I sent off my federal tax return (for refund) over the weekend, I should have enough for THAT - and some MRR'ing stuff left over besides!

MRR'ing will be tonight - club meeting tonight, and I'll see if my order is in yet (or not). Haven't heard from the club member/LHS owner, so it might be still be sitting on Walthers' loading dock.

Have yourself a hearty dinner tonight, Diners, but leave some room for that tasty dessert Ulrich brought in. Dinner

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evening all.  Glad to see that the diner was moved to its new track without trouble.  Thanks Ulrich

Rob, I know what you mean about wet....its getting pretty sloppy down here, starting to make me rethink my not wanting a vehicle with 4WD...., or getting another boat...

Well today was a day off from w**k and I spent it doing practically nothing, had to go and retrieve the front porch swing as the high winds blew it off today, also did some laundry and my monthly bug spraying.  Other than that I did absolutely nothing, took a good, long nap!  And for tonight I'm going to continue to do nothing, although I did make dinner tonight for Amy and the girls.  I'll be sure to bring the left over spaghetti, salad, and garlic cheese bread in afterwards.

Welp, that's about it for me, guess I'll get going, I'm getting "the look" (the look that means "please, please, please get off the computer and do SOMETHING!"), so I'll be off, probably be on here later.

Good Evening All,

Been an interesting day. Never logged on from the shop as the net went down before I could. A bit later we lost one leg of our three phase power and it was still down when I left at 5pm. Lots of rain and wind all day but no trees down yet this time. Got home and had a little water here and there around the edges of the basement  but nothing bad. The backyard however is under water in the low area down by the park.

Chris - if you are losing lots of headlights through burnouts try having a look at the grounds for the lights. Frequently the clever folks at VW put the grounds together in one area and run a bolt into the chassis there. If that area also gets corroded from the close proximity of the battery you get a weak ground and bulbs that burn out to soon. And see, THAT boss does care enough not to order you out in bad conditions. Did you ever have your expectations meeting?

Keith - Looking for DC advise on a DCC only website is probably going to get confusing. Try searching here or in some of the magazine articles for the care and feeding of turnouts. The PECO turnouts are power routing and will shut off the line not used. The electrofrog turnouts also turn off the route not used.  If you have gotten electrofrog turnouts that's fine, the difference is the electro frog uses a powered (electrified) frog, the insulfrog uses an insulated (unelectrified) frog. This electrified frog is helpful for very short power units with few pickups on the wheels (040 and the like). Trouble shooting circuits is an exercise in logic and patience. turning all the blocks off (you do have blocks right?) and checking them one at a time is recommended . Do you have any areas where the locomotive can turn and head back from whence it came? Those areas need special care and isolation from the rest of the track. The Atlas layout books or the Kalmbach how to wire your layout books are good resources as well as the forum here. Hope that helps some.

Lee - let me know how the sound decoder works out on the 44tonner. I have 3 now (plus two brass kits) and can't see how to fit sound in them. I do have two 1amp NCE N decoders in two of them (hard wired) that work well but it was a struggle to fit even them.

Sam - sounds like you had quite the memorable first day. If that's all the hazing you get while you break in it'll be pretty good. At least you weren't directed to a unit going the wrong way. Learning the ropes is gonna be fun, eh? Reminds me of learning to drive a semi-truck........Whistling

Ok Sawyer - you now are officially certifiable. Just remember the best defense is a good offense.

Ray - hopefully you caught the leak before it did too much damage.

Jim - good luck with your new acquaintance. Not sure I'd be comfy with that online stuff. I met my wife at night machine shop class on a bet from one of my coworkers. We were just starting and my friend asked was the wierd kid in the bib overalls, flannel shirt, boots and pony tail sticking out of a knit cap a dude or a chick to which i replied of course it's a chick (my eyesight was much better back then). At any rate a challange was issued and I walked over to this person who was finishing up from a retraining program and said hi. The reply would get us all banned from here, but I perservered and after several meetings at class she agreed to meet me outside class. The rest as they say is history,

Well I think I'll get some tacos and a glass of wine and hang for a while.  CUL, J.R.
