Evenin' folks!

Flo just a cup of decafe and a couple scones.  I'll be sitting by the stove in the back trying my darnedest to get warm again!

Well........  deep subject I've been told!  My son is finally moved into the new house, the truck has been emptied, cleaned, and returned, I got a few minutes to play "chase me" with granddaughter #1 and  played with granddaughter#2 for a while.  Thirty hours of w*rk moving him in 3 days!  I can barely move even with the Advil......

Todd and Barry I haven't been testy..... just very sore and tired.  Besides, "Please! This is supposed to be a happy occasion. Let's not bicker and argue over who killed who."

Still left to do - get my trailer emptied as well as the 10' x 20' storage rental filled with one air boat and boxes piled 8' high!  We will worry about THAT next week sometime. Sigh

I think I am just going to sit, enjoy the warm stove, and relax for the rest of the evening.

Have a good one!

Sam, I could easily see there being 1000 switches in NYP. That article in the January 10 Trains was pretty neat! 1,290 trains A DAY!

Nik, congrats on the moderator position!

Lee, PLEASE tell me that those are real and the guy is only claiming that they're models!

I see there have been a few birthdays... Happy birthday!

It also seems that everyone is getting the same cold weather that we're getting... :/

Also forgot to mention that I'm getting a bunch of track from a member on these forums (TrainManTy). A bunch of 22" radius and straight Atlas code 100 sectional track. I currently have nothing to do with it, but maybe I can start on benchwork soon...

Catch ya later!

Cool (Pfft, I wish!)

Just dropped in for a hot coffee, 5F outside now at 11:55 pm, with a wind chill now at -10F, and headed for -20F later tonight. We now officially have the coldest night of the entire winter here. Snow cover is about 5" with much deeper piles along the roads and were it drifted in the high winds.

Looks like just you and I tonight Cloe, too cold for most of the patrons I guess.

wow, this guys model railroad is out of this world!  It's hard to believe these are models!

Enjoy!

Neat stuff there LEE, thanks for posting the link!

As I was looking through his stuff...something kept bugging me. No...not the fact THAT this guy's w**k is incredible, well, actually yes...THAT's it. It's too perfect! Then I narrowed it down to WHY it looked "too perfect." I think I found a shortcoming with today's super-fine digital cameras: no grain. The black and white shots just "didn't look right," because I was expecting to see the good 'ol Plus-X or (even worse) Tri-X grain!!!!

Even the color shots...too sharp, too smooth, too...well, perfect! It's like some HD TVs out there, "more real than real."

I may have lost my mind... or I miss film much, much, much more than I've been willing to admit!?!?Confused

Speaking of film and photos...BARRY: some neat stuff you tacked up earlier today... a drive-in booze shop??? Wow... wonder how long THAT would last today?

RAY: Glad the load-out/load-in is finally completed...more or less. I told my wife when we got this place, to make sure this is where she wants to be...I ain't moving again!!! Too much crap has accumulated over the years...then there's my stuff too! Mischief

Welp...I was wanting to do some more self-imposed mental anguish/torment/abuse...I mean, trackplanning...this weekend, but not sure it'll happen. Tomorrow is "freeze my bippy off while shooting fellow firefighters doing a waterball contest in 15 degree weather" day. THAT will need it for layout Monday morning...so I'll have to get the pics edited/processed/prepped for her as well as the write-up. Fortunately THAT part should only be captions and a couple background paragraphs. So watch, I'll get down there and find NOBODY from the departments I'm a-lookin' for... Hey THAT, I gotcha a really cool pic of a guy from Sioux City (extreme other end of the state)...Banged Head Actually, in a pinch, THAT'd work...Coralville (host) adjoins North Liberty...so it's in "our neighborhood." it would just be so much better to have the "hometown heroes" for the North Liberty and Solon papers. We shall see...

Hey, glad to hear the little steamer is de-painting well... The paint is coming off in sheets? YIKES!

JERRY: I like the IC cabboose... 2 foot away or not...I like it!

ROBBY P: Looking forward to seeing the BUGS...LOVING WIFE is even more-so Whistling

JEFF: I second TODD's notion...send us all THAT 50 degree weather you care too...well, like the man said, 'cept fer the T-storms...maybe they can be dropped-off along the way somewhere...WhistlingEvilMischief

Time for a late-night RBF and we'll see who/what comes in yet this evening...

 Good Morning Folks,

Zoe, I´ll have a large bowl of cafe au lait, croissants, honey, jam and butter, please.

The night brought us another foot of sn*w and it continues! There seems to be no end to this. I had to leave home early in the morning, well not that early, but early for a Saturday, to  clear the sidewalk in front of our "old" house. It still hurts so much to go there, but I am still liable for anything that happens there until a new owner takes over. Makes me feel like Linus - where is my blanket?

Ray - moving house is some chore, isn´t it? I still have not yet fully recovered from our move in November and there are some places, which still need my attention, i.e. bath room, the train, err, guest room. I just don´t feel like doing these things at the moment.

I was planning of "diverging" some of the money I earned towards my MRR budget, but I need to buy a new coat. The old one is now beyond repair - after 15 years, it´s no wonder. Sad

Petra´s birthday is coming up in two weeks, so some of that money will go into a birthday present, as well.  Will I ever be able to start on that layout? Well, at least, it is a dream of mine and life can´t be all that bad, when you still have dreams...

 Have a joyful weekend!

Jerry-Nice work. Looks good from here.

I am NOT going to comment on the weather. It took four days to clean the roof and get all the pies and cake fillings off. The birds did enjoy the crumbs.Wonder what size catapult you guys were using? And where was it hidden?

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have a nice bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar, and lots of dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug if you please.  I'll be in the back booth by the stove keeping warm.

It was a cold one herein the Finger Lakes last night with a low of -2°F.  "We're havin' a Heat Wave.....  Tropical Heat Wave....."  Right now it is 5°F outside but calm and it may get all the way up to 14°F later this afternoon.  Just lit the wood stove (didn't get up early enough to save the fire....) to warm the house and keep the main furnace quiet.

I have a bunch of things THAT I need to catch up on today since I wasn't even home much for the last 3.  So I guess I better get moving.

Later!

(A figure is seen outside of the Diner, kicking his shoes against the side of the foundation to knock off some white stuff. The door opens...)

Good Morning, Flo, there's a bit of the white stuff out there, took a while to clear off the car before coming in. I'll have a Santa Fe mug of coffee and a cinnamon roll, please. Thanks!

Well, lookee there, Flo! Appears I have the TOP, so start the tab for me, I figure the chowhounds will be coming in pretty quick here now....Wink

Robby P.
Jim.......I thought about adding some animals.  I just painted and poured the swamp today.  That will take a day or so to dry.  I will try to get some shots up next week.

Robby, the Busch small animal set (#189-1153) is the one that Ray and I got (and Ray's posted photos in the previous or another Diner somewhere - do a search for his posts, and you should be able to find them).

Jerry, you did nice w**k on that IC caboose. I'd agree with Todd - it looks good (at 2', or however close your camera was...).Thumbs UpWink

Tom - maybe that loco's previous owner took the weight out because all that paint made it too heavy? Whistling LOL  Can't wait to see her in her restored beauty!

Lee - Wow!! that guy's layout is amazing, all right! The rest of you Diners need to take a look at those pics. But Todd - it's NOT HO scale? What scale is that? Confused

Chris, if you find a 'Tri-X' filter for PhotoShop (Elements), please let me know. Of course, usually, my pics aren't so sharp that I have to worry about THAT...

Looks like this storm mostly was southern, so Chris, Inch, Jerry and Todd may have missed this one. Now on the other hand, Garry, Bama, Rob, Sawyer, and our other 'mid-southern' folks, you may be getting snow and/or ice, depending on how far below the Mason-Dixon you are. Jeff, did you get anything down your way, or did it pass to the north of you?

Ulrich, it looks like you have a nice view from your apartment - you can see deer from there, even? Yeah!! Keep on looking for ways to squirrel away a few euros here and there toward the MRR'ing and the pond-jump! Thumbs Up

With the roads as they currently are (take-your-time and tricky-to-drive-on), I hope I may not have any calls out today. (Hey, I can hope, right?)

I've been trying to figure what my remaining freight cars I actually need to round out the rolling stock. I have most of what I need - was doing a rough count of them yesterday and it's about 100 or so (counting current ones and kits-to-be-assembled), but I am a bit heavier than I need to be on 50-footer cars (or maybe I should refer to it as I'm short on the amount of 40 footer cars). Boxcars aren't as lopsided on the numbers, but the flats and gondolas are where things aren't as balanced as they need to  be. It looks like Tichy or Red Caboose are the main folks making 40' flats. I've got in some Accurail 41' gondolas, and want some more ATSF and maybe some other lines. Anybody know of who makes the shorter gondolas in addition to Accurail (affordable ones, that is...)?

I'll grab a spot by the window to eat my breakfast - love the way the steam looks when it's cold outside!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good Morning. French toast please and coffee thank you. Hey, we're supposed to get to 22F today and sunny. Yee haw.

I HOPE to stay at the house today and just piddle around, of course getting the car in the garage is a priority but it can be done without too much of a concentrated effort. Luckily, just a few things have to be re located.

Ulrich- What a nice view. Somehow I assumed you would be living in a town and staring at a street or someone else's building front. You should have a lovely spring to look forward to.

Barry- Springfield had a drive through liquor store several years back. It didn't last long. The novelty wore off I suppose.

Sue- good to see you again. How about some progress shots.

Looks like Ray rested well last night and is back to his usual self. All is as it should be.Wink

Have a Great Day!!!

Jim- I have no idea what scale they are. At first few I did assume they were HO but then I saw several pics with him and one where he actually has his hand on a car. I assume maybe 1/24-25. Maaybe 1/20. (edit: Ooops, (he he. Ahem), spoke backwardsDunce. Actually meant smaller in size.) I'm not familiar with the other scales in inches. Still, awesome work.

Kinda makes me want to build some scenes using buildings I like that would not fit the RR. But then what would I do with them?

Todd, Jim - my little town is very, no, I mean VERY rural, at least for Germany. We enjoy the view very much - today we had a couple of squirrels chasing each other in the tree right in front of the window! Petra and I are not really city folks and I am afraid of too many people around me. I still have a hard time to go out, makes my heart race like Milwaukee Road´s Hiawatha class A 4-4-2.

Fruit & veggie smoothy to start, please.

Wintery weather last night caused a power outage around midnight. Went out and started up the generator to run a couple heat lamps in Luigi's dog house (our skinny Italian Greyhound). Came in and said to my wife, "Now watch the power come back on!" You guessed it, I barely got those words out of my mouth when the mild thump of power turning back on swept through the house.Laugh I waited 10 minutes before turning the generator back off, just to be sure.

Put out some hay today. Hope to get down into the train room this evening. Have a good day y'all.

Sawyer/Barry.....I found a few spots (derail) were do to soldering.   It does get you mad a heck thou.

Glad you got it fixed. I had one switch my locos started picking as well; found the culprit was a small piece of turf kicking the truck up. solder might have caused that other switch picking bit, but now my locos run fine. My U23B is still being a PITA though on that one switch; I'm thinking something might be up with the truck causing it to jump up. I've taken it apart a bit once to remove some ballast binding the gears; I'll do that again and see if something worked it's way into the truck.

Joe, nice BL2 catch!

Jim, we're getting nothing, nada, zilzh. no sleet or ice (which is good) and no snow (which is goodand bad). it is 28 outside right now, lol

Well, we lost 15-8. got in some good game experience though, and we'll work on what we need to at practice this week and come into our game next saturday (our only saturday match all season). David, I did manage to sprain my ankle i think, but I can walk on it just fine without pain; going down stairs sucks though.
The Rolex 24 at Daytona started today; I'll probably watch some of the race.

Check you PM's

Yes sir, did, and done replied...thanks!

Good evening... I think a mug of something hot is in order...I'm semi-frozen from hanging out at the Coralville Fire Department's 35th annual Winter Water Fights. An old firemens' tradition...with a rather icy twist! Went looking for Solon, North Liberty, Tiffin, Oxford, and Swisher...only found Tiffin and N. Liberty. THAT will still be happy...she'll get a photo page out of 'em Thumbs Up

As with most things, a lot of "hurry up and wait." Thankfully, the Tiffin guys were well-supplied with "barley water," and graciously offered some to the fireman from ClarenceSmile,Wink, & Grin!

Now I've got 150 shots to sort through: pics I shot "just 'cause they were really cool...," shots of Tiffin guys to send to 'em, and the N. Liberty crew. THAT will get an abbreviated picture folder plus her usual 8-10 cropped, adjusted, processed (.eps format, 200 dpi, halftone dots) file.

But...for now, a good mug of..........HOT SAUCE?!?!?!?!?!

Sheesh...guess I shoulda been more 'pacific.

Hello again Diners: Sue: Great to see you back in...lots of layout work done too. Thumbs Up  I thought I'd better put in an appearance before this location of the Diner became too much older. Life-in-general seems to have eroded the available mrr time, but I've been able to get a bit done here and there.

For instance, last Sunday I found that the new MicroTrains trucks I'd put on a passenger car had a coupler trip pin that snagged on a turnout.(worked on the gauge Banged Head)  Adjusting that pin resulted in the coupler exploding, and that included the flight of the coupler spring!  By the greatest good fortune I spotted it on the carpet before treading on the thing. Also found the larger parts, and put it back together with the pin adjusted. The real fault was in the turnout,( so Sawyer you're not alone!) and that lead to my taking to heart a remark from an editorial / article in the January MR to the effect that "...any layout that has poor operation is a failure."

Pretty sweepingShock, and it stung me to action doing maintenance work where the tracks leave the left hand side of my movable  window module.   (It's movable so I can get out of the window to clean there, and also it's our upstairs fire escape should the stairs not be passable; so it's quick release, with no rail joiners to hold the alignment.) I had to re-align the approach tracks for "pitch" and "yaw" (thankfully no roll Clown); and since one of the three tracks is on a grade, that was yet more fun!  The "pitch" component meant correcting a situation I hadn't really noticed - the mainline approaching the window module did so at a slight up-grade, while its continuation on the module was exactly horizontal. Result was uncoupling of some cars (if it had been all, even I would have noticed before!) Soaking the track and ballast, lifting a few inches of track, inserting a plastic shim strip along the roadbed, replacing track (taking care of the "yaw"), re-gluing ballast, was the work of  - well more than a few moments; but the fixes worked flawlessly. Except.... except for one loco! The trouble there turned out to be an out of gauge wheel set in the rear truck. Felt less of a failure by the time that was over...then Lee goes and posts those incredible (0 Scale?) pics....feel like a whupped pup now!

Now, to pick up on things I had started before the Diner was moved....

Ray:

Then using a soldering iron on the track to fix the rail firmly to the ties.  have any of you used this method?  I would like step by step directions if any of you have done it this way.
... I've browsed through the last days of the old Diner, and can't see that anyone replied to that, so, here's my My 2 cents ....not quite sure what Plio-Bond is. I've used a very similar sounding technique with just ordinary contact cement.

Step1) Spread a THIN layer of cement to base of rail.

Step 2) Let dry until tacky, or even touchable - it's not critical because of Step 4.

Step 3)  Place rail in position, press it into place, making sure it's exactly on the line, (and for subsequent rails, exactly in Gauge - you've seen Sam and JR's warnings!)

Step 4) Run a hot but solder-less iron along the railhead, pressing down to ensure good contact. The cement should melt, and re-set firmly behind the iron. You could find a pair of those small pliers that have a curved end to the jaw helpful in holding the rail while you iron it.

Step 5) Re-check Gauge, and adjust using the iron the re-melt the cement if necessary.

Step 6) go to the Rivet Counter and tell us how it turned out!

Ulrich:

and two kinds of jam,
Have you tried the Gooseberry jam  by the Swiss Company "Hero"? Got some for Kris' Christmas stocking, and it was / is a hit!

I forgot to say "Ditto" to the kudos on your going to that Ealing lady's funeral. That was a friendly thing to do. Thanks.

Co-education did not exist in those days in Germany, so I was on an all boys school.
The educational Gulags I attended were the same, and residential.  "The happiest days of your life" not. The only female teacher we had was the first year of elementary school, and she was a sadist. I know 7x8=56 because it was carved into my knuckles with the cut edge of a metal stripped ruler; her pedagogic weapon of choice.

TiptonBill: thanks for the breakfast menu, I'd forgotten that!

Steve:  Welcome back! Sorry to hear about the job situation, hope the firefighting works out for you - not that I'm wishing a lot of fires on the country! I think you know what I mean Big Smile. It's been good to get the odd video from you via Flip, but I don't recall much since the Tornado. That's a wonderful beast.

Here's a thing Kris sent my way a day or two ago.

THESE REALLY WORK!!  AMAZING SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES:

1. AVOID CUTTING YOURSELF WHEN SLICING VEGETABLES BY GETTING SOMEONE ELSE TO HOLD THE VEGETABLES WHILE YOU CHOP.

2. AVOID ARGUMENTS WITH THE FEMALES ABOUT LIFTING THE TOILET SEAT BY USING THE SINK.

3. FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE SUFFERERS ~ SIMPLY CUT YOURSELF AND BLEED FOR A FEW MINUTES, THUS REDUCING THE PRESSURE ON YOUR VEINS. REMEMBER TO USE A TIMER.

4. A MOUSE TRAP PLACED ON TOP OF YOUR ALARM CLOCK WILL PREVENT YOU FROM ROLLING OVER AND GOING BACK TO SLEEP AFTER YOU HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON.

5. IF YOU HAVE A BAD COUGH, TAKE A LARGE DOSE OF LAXATIVES. THEN YOU'LL BE AFRAID TO COUGH.

6. YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

7. IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU'VE GOT AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Time I guess for a hot chocolate with whipped cream - I'll pass on Chris's Hot Sauce, and be over at the RC. TTFN

Hey ya'll, RBF for me

No snow here, just rain. Then it got cold and windy.

Garry, out of curiosity I looked to see if ex-Q F-units made it to the merger. It looks like there was only 1. F7 796, ex-CB&Q 168A. looks like it was retired in September of 1970, and the number was then given to a ex-NP F9. So it was only there for a whopping 7 months.

Lee, I looked but I couldn't find his trains. his cars were nice though.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

RBF please.

I made it! Yes indeedy I made it. Spent about a half hour in the trainroom before I heard it. "Honey, do you need anything from the grocery store?" I left the land of delight and went into the other room to discuss the list. She then asked if I wanted to go with her. Past xperience says it is a way of allowing me to feel I have a say, and most importantly that the griping will not happen because she "asked" and I said yes when I could have stayed home. Ya. Sure. At any rate my time ended and I left, once again, for Springfield.Sigh

When I got home, I retrieved the mail from the box and it......Shock, PEEEEE YOOOOOO! Missy! What in the world have you eaten that could have made that smell?! My gosh go in Mommies room and do that. WOW! Sorry. The dog, uh, let one go. Deadwow. Anyway, I recieved my MRR today and wouldn't you know, the featured rairoad is the same outside dimensions as mine. That means it will fit in my room, and I like the plan. Best one I've seen for me yet. So you know what I'm a thinkin'. Basically there are a few mods that need to be done to allow for my tourist trap and the meat packing plant, and the beer distributor. I figure the large roudhouse isn't needed and the yard doesn't have to be as large. The mine can go and be replaced bythe distributor or the tourist trap town. Of course that's just a first thought. Some of the track he has I would not have so......, but it is a usable start. And, since I was going to rework the thing anyway, I'm thinking just start my third layout now, instead of tweaking my second and not ever being satisfied. Decisions, decisions.

Another RBF please, I'll be sitting here looking at this plan scratching my head going over the pros and cons.

I tell you what really has holding back on what I should do. The loss of the unrecoverables such a scenic material. Actually in the scheme of the overall layout, what I'm concerened about losing is small potatoes. I don't know. I really like the plan and see ways to make it more for me, or dare  I say mine, quite easily.
