As far as Engineer Bill... well I guess it was a local show then here in Los Angeles.. but the guy had a big train layout on the show and ran trains in between cartoons .. maybe I'm the only one here in this Forum that has seen the show. Any one else seen the show? LOL But talk about inspiration for having a 'dream Layout' some day.. this guy had me glued to the T.V.
Todd.. on a side note here... concerning those trailers.. and having a arts and crafts bacdground.. I would have strongly considered.. making molds out of the those.. and truly have a 'Starlight Starbright Trailer Park' Pretty easy all in all. You need.. 3 items .. Wood .. 'plastix clay' never dries.. and Silicone rubber.. (you mix is 50/50 pretty easy) to make your mold. 4 thin pieces of wood to make the mold base. All you have to do is place 'Plastileen' clay (never dries) on the inside the trailer to keep the silicone from going inside .. lightly glue the trailer to a board.. build a small frame around the trailer to hold the silicone .. mix the silcone.. and pour. Sets in 30 mins or less.. still tacky.. next day.. soft rubber.. bouncy .. more than a very soft eraser. The Silicone is so.. so clean.. to peal the trailer back out of the silicone.. would be an easy task. Other than a small oily film left on your trailer.. providing you've sealed it with Dullcote.. it would be fine. So.. on a side note here.. don't do the insides.. finish the outside.. and if you want .. I'll give ya a demonstration of making molds. Oh I could show you the 'old school' with latex.. but this the 21st century.. and silicone molds really have the detail.. and the ease of making molds.

Another dreary day here in the Finger Lakes. High of 39°F has already been reached and there are lots of clouds blocking out that big yellow thing this morning. My sister in Canandaigua will be leaving today to spend a couple weeks in Mexico over the holidays. She goes with a tour company that specializes in putting people in touch with artists that live in small villages and offers some unique photo opportunities. I get to take care of her cat(s) (she has tamed a stray cat who stays outside, but she now considers hers.... she also has an old indoor/outdoor cat).
Kieth, remember what? Lambchop and Sherry? Been trying to forget them for many years........ Now Kukla, Fran, and Ollie...... I have fond memories of way back in the 50's when we got our first TV set. We could get 3 channels. One from Rochester, one from Syracuse (if we turned the antenna around), and one in between that was always showing a snowstorm......

Yet another Inlaw story: My wife discover 2 sets of new car keys. Turns out crazy MIL had a locksmith come and re-key her car, thanks to her Alzheimer's/dementia/paranoia. Only problem is, her car wasn't in the parking lot at the time. Sheesh, can't wait to get them moved and slam shut the door behind me. Another $300+ from their account down the tubes. This happened before SIL (the nice one) took over their account, so at least it cannot happen again. Wonder who's car that guy re-keyed?

Thanks to everybody for all the info and tips for trailer parks, since I have a couple of those NuComp trailer kits yet to build for my trailer park. I haven't figured yet if I want to get an Airstream trailer and make my park 'upscale' or not. I have the office, a couple of mowers and one of those string of mailboxes on the 2X4 frame (that last from the W-S set). Still haven't a clue where on the (future) layout I'll locate the trailer park, but why let that slow me down, right?
Todd, one option for your trailer windows would be get (or make) curtains, drapes, whatever y'call 'em. I know City Classics and others make drapes for their building which could be mod'ed for what you need, or some use other things. If you're taking a survey on that 'unfinished' thing, put me down for a (definitely) 'yes.'
TCWright - sounds like you had a yummy meal yesterday. I love it when I use my crockpot, except that I have to wait for it to get done (and all the while, it's smelling - as the noon cooking guy on our news says - "Ooooh, it's so good!").

Chris, your talking about providing enough content for THAT editor to use, had me thinking - does she ever have trouble getting the paper out when it's bad/nasty/ sn*wy/icy weather there? I know you all get more than your share in the wintertime... Your mention of Rerun's tally reminded me of one time when I was younger and our dachshund caught a frog (tried to take a bite) - he (our dog) was trying to shake the taste out of his mouth for about a solid minute after that, and he never tried to take a nip at frogs after that. And I can see from your 'Rerun and Petey' stories that you don't want to get on Rerun's bad side.

I just have some W-S latex rubber so far, and was figuring on making some smaller stuff (walls or extensions for the roundhouse I have - which is too short for post-WWII steamers). I'm off work today and tomorrow (but have to take paperw**k from the weekend's on-call by the office some time today). God was good to me - had one trip to the ER Saturday (saw 3 there), another trip to local jail in the afternoon, and then yesterday just one trip to a local jail (for 1 person). Sleep last night was so-so, but that's usual when on-call. You wake up every few hours, like your body is wondering if the pager went off and you slept through it, or if it stopped w**king, etc.
I'll be at the window booth for a while. Gonna read some MR issues that somebody brought in and see if I can find some more ideas for the layout.

The freight yard is back in action, and working very much as I hoped that it would. Now I've got to put all the ties back that were removed in the renovations, and airbrush the rails. I brought the compressor upstairs after blowing up the parade balloons yesterday. The it's on to ballast for the entire yard (WS grey blend B1393..I bought a 32 oz shaker of that and it's ¾ full, so I should be able to bury just about everything!)
Jeff: Thanks for telling us about that bus trip...great story! Hope your ankle gets sorted soon - did you say you see the Dr. Tuesday? Also hoping you are able to get some sleep, thunderstorms or not! Maybe not the day to go under the trailer! Like what you've done with the tie-downs on the bulkhead flat.

Jim, If thats what it takes to have you look at my attempts at designing a working large station and yard... I'd be happy to give a demonstration on Silicone and its properties. Btw I did check my mail.. is there a new map of my proposed layout? I saw only one letter with no attachments. Its a favorite story of mine too .. but wait.. theres more. Well, I made it through day 1 of 4 days of HELL. 2 exams today; spanish and geometry/. the geometry exam was relatively easy; just took a while to work the problems. The spanish exam SUCKED! Finally got back to the last trailer this evening:
Used strapping tape to simulate both curtains & window blinds. It looks better as blinds, but it stuck to this window so hard I just left it. Some windows have clear plastic while others have parchment paper, just for variety. White LED in main house, small blue LED in entry way. Time & energy permitting, should add the skirt & roofs tomorrow evening.
Need to go lay down for awhile. Have a nice evening y'all.

Buy this.. its on ebay. They are located in San Diego California. Some what expensive now. Given its properties.. (flexible.. and you can pour low temp metals) .. its the best. This stuff mixes 1:1 for easy mixing. Make yourself a wooden frame.. glue it to paper.. glue part to paper using milk glue. Then mix silicone.. and pour ....sets in 30mins.. I guess the reason why its so expensive.. the properties.. allow you to even pour low temp metals into the mold. So taking that into play, and the great detail.. I thought I'd go with this.
Here's a lousy job on mold making.. I forgot to mix the silicone up.. real good.. and it layered. This was supposed to be for Jerry.. he never sent me his address.. besides Jeanne said.."Oh Great.. heres a lousy mold Jerry .. that weeps oil." It stopped.. and is fine.. take a look at the train portal I bashed. I had made this mold a month ago or so... poured plaster today.. painted real quick.. I had never seen what I bashed.. and what it looks like. I just don't like the thin standard portals.. way too thin.. plus I wanted something different.. and I need to mass produce these. Also on the left is a 'Old Town Wall' I'm bashing.. I think this will help in the lowest station/yard/staging area. I need a few and it will save space for me. ROBBY P: The Wife loves VW "bugs," "beetles (original, old, super, new)," the classic "peoples' car." IF you find your self poking around the attic and come across some you'd care to part with, let me know...we'll work something out. Don't go rushing up there... she needs more shelves in a bad way. I think she even has part of the fleet in storage.
JIM: You mentioned the difficult/interrupted sleep of "on call." Yep, I couldn't have described it better myself. Back in my ambulance days, I'd go through the same "did I miss something?" "is it even still working?" I kept the pager on "nuclear war" volume to be sure it'd wake me. I did sleep through a page once, in Creston. I w**ked a schedule of on-shift/on-call/on-shift/on-call/on-shift then off for 2-3 days. Unlike the usual "tone and voice" pagers Union County would just send out a hi-lo-hi-lo-hi-lo sound. No pager to trip, just a handi-talkie. One fine morning, after a particularly busy night shift, I get a phone call from a very unhappy Ambulance Service Director wondering if I'm coming in for the transfer run I was paged for...a half-hour earlier.. With other ambulance services, we had the usual fire style pager...which I'd clip to the collar of my shirt. If it went, once I peeled myself off the ceiling...I was able to respond rather quickly.
As for Rerun and the toad...the only inedible edible critter I've seen him try to "shake off" the taste of, is those danged Japanese Beetles, the rust-orange ladybug lookin' things. I guess they don't taste too good. It takes him about 4 tries to finally eat one. He'll lap one up, spit it out, look at it, lap it up again (maybe he thinks it'll taste better the second time????), etc. Finally...*GULP!* Gone.
Someone asked about THAT getting the paper out when the weather is crap. Well...they send it electronically to Marshalltown for printing, so I guess if the roads are crap, it'd delay the truck bringing the finished product. It was a day late last week...the Post Office couldn't get their trucks out. Being a weekly, we're usually pretty "stale" anyways...what's another day or two to get the score of the high school basketball game from last week?
As for tormenting the wife with the box in a box in a box...THAT's one of HER famous tricks!!! Denying her the pleasure of shaking the contents is mine.
KEITH: I think it was The King of Toddland asking about the casting...but I sat through the lecture anyways...pretty interesting, and could come in handy once the layout is up and I need to start scratchbashing some rather large structures. Thanks!
Not much else going on, other than I shot two features for THAT today: Optimists delivering food for needy families at a North Liberty school, they get a box of stuff to help 'em get through having the kids home for nearly 2 weeks with the "holliday break." They would normally be eating breakfast and lunch at school, this fills in the gaps/eases the families' budget woes. Anybody remember when it was "Christmas break???" I also snapped pics of Santa visiting crumb-crunchers. Since the "kid sitting on Santa's lap" pic gets old fast, I end up looking for the kids with really expressive faces, a terrified kid peeking out from behind Dad...THAT sort of thing. Tomorrow night is basketball, school board on Wednesday, wrestling on Thursday...turn it all in on Friday with some other stuff I still have to get lined-up. One will be to go to the Solon Before and After School Program (BASP) to line up groups of kids, take their picture and ask "what do you want for Christmas?" It fills a page or two pretty quickly, gets lots of kids faces in the paper...Moms, Dads, Grandmas, Grandpas buy extra copies...

Keith, I got your email (and looked at your topic from your link in the Diner). From your posts in your layout topic, it looks like you have most of the design figured out, don't you? Besides, any layout design (on paper or 'puter) I've ever seen will involve modifications when you start laying out track on the boards...

That I know of, Chris, I've never slept through a pager. At first when I started on-call, I think it was set with the 'doo-de-dah-de-doo' (up the scale and back down), which became VERY annoying. In fact, there was - let's see, Halls' cough drops? - one ad with people getting onto an elevator with one guy, where one of the people had that same ANNOYING tone. I got really quick with the mute button on my TV remote after the first couple of times that ad ran. After I figured out that there were about six possible alert beeps, I just set my pager to a straight 'beep-beep-beep-beep...' tone; less annoying, but gets me up okay. I did have one neighbor in our building who I think moved because of my on-call evenings and the pager going off at 1:30, 2 or 3 in the morning... That was kinda funny (and sounds accurate) about Rerun tasting and retasting the frog until he gobbled it down (but then again, Rerun might have a different take on it).
Prayers for those needing healing, or strength to deal with over-packed houses full of family, or just dealing with all that sn*w and ice. Stay safe, Diners! (You ladies, too, Chloe!)

Evenin, started to read the posts but am getting bleary eyed so I'll catch up tomorrow. I did catch a picture of Rob's trailer. Looks really good! I drove myself bonkers trying to make a kitchen for mine. Not sure still what my approach for the big windows is going to be. Still thinking about furniture. Bill - good to see you drop by. Did you ever get anywhere planning/building a layout? I love the shots you post, are they ones you took while employed by the railroad?
Rob - trailer is coming along nicely. If you can do a white fade like Robbies, it would show the trailer as starting to fade and "chalk up". Love the curtains, good idea.
Lee - the Hullett(sp?) is awesome. I assume it's the Walthers kit?
Jim - Keiths' pics pretty well show you what you need to know. If you're making more than one, you do need to spray silicone mold release into the mold or the detail will peel out and stick to the part. Plaster for portals and thick parts works best, I use resin for thin castings like walls. I plan on mass producing the stone block walls of the next raised urban track in resin so I can do a more presentable job. The embossed paper just didn't look good enough in the foreground.

Keith- The area for the trailer park is not big enough for an entire fleet. It's rather a suggestion of a park. It'll have two mobile homes, maybe a third just depends on how it works out, a travel trailer with a wood extension built to it, and the Plasticville Sunset Motel turned efficiency appts. Complete with pool and paper water. I have however "cut and pasted" your directions for possible future reference. Thanks. Not sure what those cars are. Hoppers on flatcars is what they look like to me.
Hey, speaking of TYCO, there's a thread about them going on right now. As of now, no one has stepped up to really beat them down yet. You don't suppose some of us will be able to admit we run TYCO stuff out in the general populous soon do you?
Ray- Kukla, Fran and Ollie were a bit before my time I think, but just a bit. I vaguely recall the show. It may also have been in reruns as I was born in the spring of ‘62. I do however remember well Lambchop and Sherrie. Last gig I recall..... The Hollywood Squares. Them and Charles Nelson Riley. Aaah, Hollywood Squares. Purgatory for the stars.
Jim- One other thing I don't like about the NuComp mobile home, is the base that the walls attach to is thick and the width of the trailer. Fine exept when it comes to adding the skirting. My first I put the skirting to the underside of the base and that made the base show. I was going to put the skirting around the base, but then the thickness of the skirting would be obvious. The picture on the box shows the latter method. (amongst a few other things that don't make me feel so bad as a hobby modeler when the pros make the same mistakes) I see where many people do Google Images for their interior props. I usually find pictures not suitable for my purpose but then again I haven't had time to sit and go through all of them. That seems to be the most economical.(meant Cheapest)
Good to see Bill stopped in and JP too. Getting' a bit more frequent.
And for you "how do I get my new loco in with the mix because it isn't the right line" folks. Yesterday, I saw zipping between the grain bins as only a freight can zip, a CN leading a UP with a I'd swear a BN in green and black. I didn't see the name or the cab, but what I did see was the green and black paint scheme.
Well I guess I'll begin seeing what messes I can get into today.
