Jeff, there is so much upheval in that town of yours it is hard to find your way around there anymore. I still haven't found a spot to park my trailer.

You park it in the same area I have mine parked. Right between the park and the old station.

Coffee refill, please & thanks. I know it's late, but the wife is helping her folks tonight, so it is a good time to crank up the surround system and watch a SciFi flick. (she doesn't like SciFi...one of her very few faultsWhistlingLaugh)

***Paul, you guys sound very similar, in that my wife is the one who does all the paper work here, too...and I'm good at checking over the numbers.

***Sawyer, Congrats on those scores!

***Galaxy, we're in kinda similar circumstances. I'm still in my 40's and my body is falling apart, even though I try to ignore it. It sucks!

***Eric, we've ordered from Walthers once or twice with no problems (unless you include items becoming out of stock). Cool that they said "keep it". That always scores points. I just placed and order with GoHobbies and will see how they do. Wonder if anyone else here has used them?

Evenin' all. Nothing for me thank you. I just popped in to say

Nik- Sorry about you grandfather. Your family is in my prayers.

Galaxy- I have back (spinal issues) myself and I sympathize. I also have knee issues and shoulder issues and wrist issues and brain issues. The last one is my wife diagnosis. Prayers for you to be able to overcome or find relief from the pain. I'm in the forties also.

Sawyer-Wow! Impressive schedule, and congrats on the good reports, Good luck! Thumbs Up

Lee- A little late but I hope you didn't get the "tootsie flipper"

Jeff- I got an offer to be the mail delivery person (politically correct) for your layout. I respectfully declined. LaughLaugh

Drove down to the city (Pittsburgh) to hit up the bigger shop down there.  Came back with some oddball things like some DPM wall sections.  Those huge urban buildings add up pretty fast when you're building them four squares at a time, so I like to spread out the acquistion of wall-pieces.  Got some sort of covered hopper made by Atlas.  Don't remember exactly what it is but it looks like a regular old ACF in that 4750 cu ft neighborhood, but has some sort of pneumatic piping on the bottom hatches.  I believe its for plastic pellets.  Also snagged the last of the three cyrogenic reefer kits they had.  Last December I saw three of them hiding on the bottom of the wall and over the last three months, bought all three.  Two were undecorated.  Every time I got into a shop, I tell myself "no more rolling stock."  But they seduce me every time.  At least those little beer can tank cars give me that "$30 for something so small?" feeling that keeps me away.  But $22 for a hopper, all over that.  My fleet sits at 25 cars right now, around 30 if you count battered cars from my youth in need of repair.  When I was a teen, had a layout, and still ran around with Bachman, Model Power, and Life-Like toy train stuff, I dont think I had that many.  A meager fleet, yes, but all things considered I am running out of shelf space.

I just realized thats an average of two a month since I returned last April.  Maybe I should redirect some of that funding towards, you know, a layout of some sort instead.

I don't blame you. Sundown and Nutzville are growing so fast that soon they'll be one city instead of two towns.

Today was blood drive. twas fun. arm hurts, so i'm writing this one-handed. got some paint on an old lionel aft Daylight into that ph4 amtrak that derjohn and i are fond of.

thinkin about trying t rig smoke units instead of a motor. one for smoke, the other for the cylinder cocks etc. maybe a third for the steam valves on top. f i feel stupid enough, rig one for whistle.

Cool sounding, but I bet I won't get this far. Least not for a while.

Evening all,

Lion, you should wander over to Ohio for one of our 2 main train shows.  Box cars run $2.50 to $7.50 each.  Walther’s and Trainman new rolling stock runs $8 to $12 each.

Todd, yea I got the little toe whip while I was there.

Jeff, you may need a troop train to sit on a spur in your town just to keep the locals calm.

I got cast made for my orthotics and now I just need to wait until I get the card in the mail to pick them up.

I just finished wiring the Rivarossi 2-8-8-2 for DCC and gave it the LS&W lightning stripe down the boiler catwalks.   I’m waiting for Bachmann to write back with the cost of those plugs they use between the locomotive and the tender (unless you guys know a good source for them).

Evening, Chloe - could I have a hot fudge brownie sundae a la mode, please, with a cup of coffee in a Santa Fe mug? Thanks!

Yesterday, I had promised a photo of my friend Mary (from S. Calif.), but then realized that such a thing might be Sign - Off Topic!!... So, instead, here's my link to said OFF-TOPIC photo of Mary... Big Smile

Lee, I figure that about as soon as I'm finishing up my scratchbuilt team transfer track facility, I'll happen across the last available copy of the Walthers kit, right? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Kinda busy at w**k today, and not much done on my layout, except for having my trailer home kits out and thinking about my "Shady Lane Trailer Park", with the row of mailboxes out by the dirt/gravel road (and with the tracks just across the road from the park). Yeah!!

'nuther warm day today (70 F or so), but I think tomorrow it's supposed to start cooling off into a high in the 50's for the rest of the week.

Robby, I think that hamster had better have 9 lives of his own, at the rate his excursions have been going for him! Black Eye

Eric, those walls look good - what's that building gonna be, again?

Nik.n, sorry to hear of your Grandfather's passing - I'm sure many people will be missing him. Will add you and your family to my prayer list. Angel Angel

Paul, I'd bet that Bergie has noticed when he peeks in the window every so often. But he tends to be a man of few words, too. Hey, on those subscriptions, that's a good reason to stagger them out across different times of the year (so they all don't hit the bank account at the same time)Shock

Sawyer, I'd agree with your choice - much better than taking Biology and Phys. Science in the same year! And great deal on those test scores!! Bow Keep that up, Yeah!!

Jeff, I'm looking forward to seeing Ezra's new digs above the garage. And - under the 'better ways to spend 6 hours' - would 'watching paint dry' be above the Hazmat training? Laugh

Uh, NittanyLion - yeah, putting some funds back for a place to run all those freight cars you've been getting would be good...WhistlingWink

Barry - I don't know, it might be that PC's just been really busy because he's been eating all the pies in the back, instead of sitting out front here and talking like the rest of us motor-mouths (like you and me...) Smile,Wink, & Grin Hey, is it spring up there yet?

Well, (for now) I'm caught up, so I'll be heading for home (and bed). About that time for me. Zzz

Blessings and prayers,

Good Evening Everyone,

Another cold night up here. It's 11F right now going down to -6F tonight but we are supposed to be in the 40's by the week-end. I'm beginning to wonder if spring will ever come as we still have full snow cover in the yard but hopefully by next week there will be a few patches without that white stuff. Mind you the snow has crystalized and is frozen hard enough that Pippa can walk on it without sinking in.

I finally finished that Red Caboose Sunoco tank car kit. It turned out fine but I'm not that impressed with a kit that requires you to ream out every mounting hole for all the fittings and then for others you have to drill out the mountings with a very poor gig. The plastic on the grab irons, etc. is also quite brittle and easy to break. Oh well, it did try my patience but it won't encourage me to buy Red Caboose again.

I've been running trains a fair bit this week. Right now I'm in CN freight mode using just steam. Those PK2 0-6-0's certainly are smooth runners. Next it will be CN passenger as I like to give my locos equal running time. For that I use my Spectrum light Mountain but as I have only 3 CN steam it really doesn't take long to give them "all' a good run. I hope to get back to that decoder install in a Mehano Sante Fe as I think I know what I did wrong provided I didn't fry the decoder. That would get me up to 4 and if I put a decoder in my Mehano Hudson, I'll have 5! A veritable fleet.

Nik, sorry to hear about your grandfather.

Galaxy, that wasn't exactly good news you had regarding your back. I don't have any personal experience with back issues but my wife has had back problems since she was in her '30s. She has learned to deal with it but has to be very careful.

See you soon,

CN Charlie

When and where are these events where I can save some pennies?  I was just up for WGH last weekend (didn't have time to make it to Railfest).  Despite being a Pittsburgher and Penn State fan, I make occasional ventures into enemy territory and get dirty looks at the gas station from people with Ohio State stickers on their cars.  My brother lives about halfway between Akron and Cleveland, so like I said, I'm in eastern OH with some regularity.

Galaxy- I have back (spinal issues) myself and I sympathize. I also have knee issues and shoulder issues and wrist issues and brain issues. The last one is my wife diagnosis. Prayers for you to be able to overcome or find relief from the pain. I'm in the forties also.

It just adds to my medical conditions list for me- I have eight other major health issues  including Asthma; Bipolar/depression; Migraines; being the particular ones that in combination have put me on disability. And I have noticed my short- term memory seems faulty sometimes. I wonder if that is caused by my Bipolar medication.

Next month I have a regular visit with my Dr. at which point I am going to ask about why my arms and hands go numb a lot, whether at/in activity or at rest they seem to go numb, so numb I can't then pick up a coffee mug while watching TV till the numbness spells a bit. Somptin' ain't right 'bout that, I tells ya.

I have a squashed disc in my back and always thought that was what caused the pain in my back from bending over, or walking alot or even doing around the house work. But, now at least there seems to be a particular reason for spinal pain. I'm just not liking arthritis. The muscle relaxer works well enough taht I can't type well, and have to correct everything I type frequently, but the pain med for the muscle spasms doesn't seem to be doing squat.

Thanks for the prayers, it seems odd to be on THIS side of the prayer things, as it is usually I who puts up a prayer candle for those in need. It is out now as too early {5:55 AM EDT} in day to start it and I am going back to bed, but it will be lit later on in the day for those who need it.

Good Morning Everybody!!

If I did my math right, I've got TOP.  Chloe, Flo, load everyone up, feed them good.  My treat!

It's nice to see students who take education seriously.  I tried but was always mediocre, never seemed to understand everything 100%.  Those that "get it" should sieze every opportunity to advance and succeed.   I finally went back to college after 30 years and I guess I now "get it".  I'll pat my self on the back with a 3.47 GPA.  Not bad for someone who always got C's.

I read of many of my new found friends difficulties in life and leads me to believe that this is in part the reason for our 'brotherhood' here in the Diner.  Life is hard enough but some of us have additional trials and tribulations to overcome.  We seek and offer each other both comfort and prayer.  This is what sets us apart from some other forums and posts I've read.

Off topic? Yeah, it is.  Life is all about Topics.... You focus completely on one Topic and you forget that the world is out there.  We've been over this before, we discuss PIE!, we discuss eachother, we talk about our accomplishments, both scholarly and occupationally.  And, most of all, the thing we all have in common, our love of trains.  We share, observe, we praise the work of each other as we enjoy the one thing that takes us away from those trials and tribulations for a little while.... our model railroads.

The opinions expressed here are solely mine.  Those outside who wish to criticize are probably just jealous.

Eric

Well, if I wasn't so longwinded I would have been TOP.. Oh what the heck, I'll treat anyway.

If they want to expand outward then THEY can finance the knocking out of the walls and the outward expansion. I don't foresee that happening.

Yeah, the police force here may need some help at that. They have two Chevy Caprices. One runs an dthe other is a parts source for the other one.

A photo of Ezra's home will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. And yes, watching paint dry would be preferable to going through another Hazmat class. In fact I would watch paint dry while measuring the growth of the grass during a rain storm while watching an old car rust. Does that tell you anything?

Good morning all,

If you guys think your HAZ-MAT class was bad try going to a 4 week course where you spend most of the day reading and researching the Code of Federal Register (CFR) and United States Codes (USC) to determine reportable quantity, segregation and storage, prevention, and enforcement of HAZ-MAT.  That was 280 hours of my life I’ll never get back.  I still have to have to sit through 40 hours a year of refresher training and I get a full physical every year to monitor the effects of doing HAZ-Mat response.  Glad I’m working in a new job, but they still want me to keep my qualifications current.

Nittany Lion, I’m sorry you had to put yourself through the WGH show.  That was by far the worst train show I’ve attended. There is approx 24 to 30 train shows in the Cleveland area between October and May. If you shoot me an email

The top 3 shows:
Berea, OH. Cuyahoga County Fair Grounds. Typically the first weekend in October, sponsored by NMRA Div 4 and occupies 6 buildings. Approx 3,000 people visit the show over 2 days.

Kirtland, OH. Lakeland Collage. Typically the weekend of St. Patrick’s day, sponsored by NMRA Div 5 and occupies the main gymnasium, 4 racket ball courts, and two of the auxiliary basket ball courts.  Approx 3,000 people visit the show over 2 days.

Toledo, OH. Lucas County Fairgrounds, 4 shows a year (November, 2 in December, April), sponsored by the Friends Of Toledo area Model Railroaders. This is a bit of a haul from Cleveland (120 miles), but items are in good and serviceable condition and priced to sell. Vendors sell new in the box items that have been in inventory over 13 months and it’s priced to sell.  Most vendors have the attitude that: “ I carried it to the show, but I don’t want to carry it home”.  So you get the best deals.  They offer a early bird pass, this allows you admission 2 hours in advance of the regular admission I highly recommend spending the extra $4 to get in early! I think Toledo show is 26 APR 09. Shoot me an email and ask me to look it up.

All three are well visited, but there is plenty of space to move around and you don’t feel rushed.

Good Morning--We're at -1C with our high going to 2C--and we'll see some snowflurries again. At least the yard work is out of the way.

All this HAZ-MAT course stuff reminds me of a ridiculous course I took, by myself mind, on Investment Management several years ago---I still am supposedly 'licensed' to do this, BUT---BUT--BUT---I would be a dang fool to do this, what with all the shenanigans going on any more! I get kind of annoyed when I see what's going on--Banged Head---now, if'n you want to do what I did back then--you would have to do this through the 'good offices' of an investment firm that would 'hire' you then that way you'd get paid to do the Canadian Securities Course then do a Course through the Professional Conduct & Practice Handbook and an Insurance Course as well. All this takes a matter of a few weeks/more like 3 Months!/ Oh--and THEN you'd have to take a brain melting exam of some untold number of hours of pure investment work/math/math/ & more mathDead Once you have the license you still need some refreshers and so on and so forth etc etcDead The last time I did any work in this was BEFORE I took a Brain Holiday---My PSW work is about enough---thank you very much--SoapBox---I still do my own things with this but again----DeadBlack Eye

JimRC-It feels spring like up here but we'll get the occassional surprise---Smile,Wink, & Grin

Chloe--I'll have a coffee and some toast with jam thanks---I'll be with the gang by the windows, train watchingWhistling

Good morning.

It's 48 and clear. The high should be in the upper 70's and it will be partly cloudy.

Got a bunch of work done on the low end industry on the extreme south end of the layout yesterday. It only served to point out how much work still lies ahead (*groan*). I don't envision getting much done today. I have an appointment with the foot doc at 2 pm so that's gonna pretty well trash the afternoon. I went yesterday to look at the 'completed' layout of another modeler. It was good but hardly what I would term as complete. Structures set out with gaps visible at the bottom, majority of the scenery was grass mat and the background was a haphazard collection of cutup photos that varied in size. The layout was built primarily for running with very little emphasis on operation or switching and was severely lacking in interesting scenery. I made some suggestions to the builder/owner on how to improve it, all of which he eagerly wrote down in a small notebook. I gave him a short one on one lesson on how to close up the gaps at the bottom of the structures with a quick application of the proper scenic material, a little alcohol and some 50/50 water/glue mix. I then showed him how to dramatically improve the backdrop imagery. With the availability of pictures on the internet it's not hard to piece together a good looking background image. This in no way made him think that I was putting his efforts down. The entire purpose of my presence there was to show him how to improve what he had already done. He had taken one look at my layout and decided that his needed some real help. That's quite a compliment when you consider that mine is nowhere near complete. I'll be going back there in a couple of weeks for a two hour session to teach him more about how to lay out and build up scenery. Just putting some blended turf and clump foliage on the grass mat made a dramatic improvement.

Mornin' everyone!

That bright Yellow thing is back this morning.  Not a cloud in the sky after a day of rain yesterday. Picked up nearly an inch of rain.  It is currently 43°F here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  It will stay in the mid 40s most of the day.

Chloe a very large dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug would be in order to start with.  I guess I'll have a short stack of sour dough pancakes this morning with the NYS Maple Syrup please.

Jeffrey hope everything goes well at the doctors today!

I have two days to get everything done for the meet.  I have to print out all the materials today and check to make sure that it will print correctly from my laptop and little Canon printer that I will take to the meet in case we have a lot of people and need more.  Looks like all the presenters and layouts are ready and at this point the weather is supposed to good for the day.  I'm hoping for a lot of people showing up for it.  I still have to get this house cleaned up for the guests, but it is looking better.

The Spring Musical is going to be interesting as they are way behind schedule.  I got most of the cast who need mics wired last night.  20 minutes later the director had them return them to me.  He said, "they aren't ready for mics yet......."  The show is in a little over a week.  In fact dress rehearsal is one week from today!  Gong to be interesting!

Got an email this morning from my SIL.  She said that my FIL told one of the nursing assistants at the nursing home last night that he "just wants to be with his wife".  She passed away 3 years ago at the age of 92.

Prayers for all in need!

We'll get there sooner or later!

Good morning.....

Donuts and coffee here please.

Watch out for JimCG. His mrr'ing progress may be slipping. Too much California dreaming. Right, Jim?...Seriously, she looks very nice. Last I checked, there are many mile from Cape G to the Golden State, however.

Jeff....That looks like a very busy scene on you layout. Nice.

Inch... I hope MIL recovers OK from that surgery.

I placed an order at Chuck's Depot for more supplies for some projects I am wokring on.

Happy Model Railroading!

Pepsi please, Chloe.

I was at a hobby show and I saw a steam locomotive for $40, that was all I had left over from a LHS trip and i wished I didnt. There was a guy in the back room of the fire hall with some others vendors that was selling boxes of 50 $30+ cars and two $200 locomotives in each box, for $20! They all looked REALLY nice and the locos were in thier own boxes never opend. They were part of some estate the guy was selling. There was five boxes and hundreds of other high priced cars and locomotives around the boxes, the prices not even going above $1.00. the reson he hadent sold any yet is because he was at the end of a long hallway and there was a lot of other vendors blocking the way. RRRRRRRR!!!

Dark, dismal and cold here too, "Feels like 41".  Supposed to get rain later.  It never did hit 70 here, barely hit 62.  Experts (?) say it's because the ocean is still cold.  Great, except that I live 1 mile west of the ocean and the wind is blowing east....

Jim, I believe it was you... the small structure is for a boiler type building.  Nothing special, I'll see about some interior detail.

OOH! Almost lunchtime!  Chloe, what's the special today?  Meatloaf Surprise?  The day can only get better.  I'll have a rootbeer with that. Thanks!

Now... about that foamcore... Staples!  Afterwork if I'm not too tired.

Later all, Eric
