The suns out but still kinda chilly.

Jim, I agree about the hamster.  He's down to 5 lives now!!!

Worked on my scrap yard some this morning.  Ran the trains for a few minutes.  Now I am getting ready to watch some NCAA.

So that's pretty much my day.   Busy huh?

Well everybody have a good day.

And yes, watching paint dry would be preferable to going through another Hazmat class. In fact I would watch paint dry while measuring the growth of the grass during a rain storm while watching an old car rust. Does that tell you anything?

Thanks Pally! Man, don't hold back, tell us how you REALLY feel... I'm just sooooooooooooo looking forward to Saturday.

 Not.

Oh well, gotta do whatcha gotta do. I haven't had it for 10-12 years, so hopefully I'll learn or re-learn something. The dept. in general somehow "forgot" to do the required refresher programs...so guess we're going as a group. With UP's east-west main and US Highway 30 running through town, probably not a bad thing to go to. Ethanol trains, the "death train" (name bestowed on a mostly chemicals run, by the First Responder team at General Mills next to Beverly Yard), God knows what in the container trains...

Gee, I picked a GREAT place to live!

If you guys think your HAZ-MAT class was bad try going to a 4 week course where you spend most of the day reading and researching the Code of Federal Register (CFR) and United States Codes (USC) to determine reportable quantity, segregation and storage, prevention, and enforcement of HAZ-MAT.  That was 280 hours of my life I’ll never get back.

No thank you, Sir... Never had any desire to go be a "glow worm." I was quite content with HAZMAT Awareness level training. As in, I'll go be "aware" of the mess someplace else!

You sound just like my fire chief. When it comes to 'glow worm' situations he'll put miles between himself and the incident. The heck with the 'thumbnail' assessment.

Dark, dismal and cold here too, "Feels like 41".  Supposed to get rain later.  It never did hit 70 here, barely hit 62.  Experts (?) say it's because the ocean is still cold.  Great, except that I live 1 mile west of the ocean and the wind is blowing east....

OK, I live in Indiana.  Is that whats causing it here too, so say the "experts"?  Because last time I checked, the surf was NOT up in Indiana!

Back atcha, Jeff!!

BTW, I had an experience like yours last Sunday also! A ROF  my wife waited on at Applebees is a MRR really close to me . Ended up being invited over to see his layout. She had told him that we had "Recently built our house and my husband started his trains in the basement" Read: I'm a noob! I get over there , REAL nice guy, ex Illinois Central Engineer, beautiful house etc.Layout's in 1/2 the 2 car garage(I'm in WISCONSIN.)Great trees. Kind of a doughnut shaped layout,DC, duck-under.The reason he said he wanted  me over was wiring ?'s.2 loops connected with a ramp. No biggie, but when I tried to give any advice, I.E. reverse loops ,DCC, etc.It was "Let me tell you how I did.......!!!

He did have well over 100 custom-painted diesels in his freelanced scheme, and a TON of steamers. 6 complete passenger consists. 400 +WEATHERED freight cars. With loads.Robby would DROOL. All on shelves. On shelves.

All in all, I had a great 2 hours and he's expecting an invite to my layout, which I  will gladly extend. I just wish there was a way to kind of let him know I've got more expierence than he thinks I have without "slamming" him. Any tips, guys?

Jim, check your messages!

Bought the foamcore.  Doctor was just on the phone, my cholesterol LDL is 164.  A little high, but I reminded him I've been busy and probably not eating right. I spent the last 2 months eating err..ahh diner food..... of course that is no reflection on the healthy food here at the TRACKSIDE DINER!!  Ah Chloe?  May I get one last slice of cheesecake? Thanks..

The visit with the foot doc went semi OK. Seems I may have a cellulitis infection in my right leg just below the knee. He's got me on antibiotics for it. I gotta take them three times a day. I can tell right now that I won't be able to do much for the next couple of weeks but it's better than being in that darn hospital again.

Well, this muscle relaxer I'm taking certainly has kick to it. Whoa, nice drugs. I won't be driving for awhile, I'm lucky I can walk straight. Fortunately it lets me sleep alot too.

Somebody in all those HAZMAT posts mentioned watching paint dry. I have actually sat and watched paint dry waiting to put on a second coat. When there isn't much else to do it can be rather "exciting" {not really} to watch the patterns it makes as it dries. Like watching clouds go by. Oh looks...theres a moose....and a duck....oh look theres a....

{I told you the drugs were good}

Thank goodness I only have to take for 10 days.

No, Sir, Your Honor, Sir, i am no longer responsible for anything I say, think, do or post anymore till this stuff wears off...

Speaking of wearing off, it's about time for the next dose....yippy! are those stars on the ceiling? Clouds? Why is the sky blue?

EDIT: OOPS! I'm on top...so I have to pony up for all you guys.....ok, but I'm not sharing my drugs!

Refried beans, 2 cheese enchiladas and rice, please & thanks.

Anyone here going to The Great Train Expo in Costa Mesa this weekend? I owe my love of trains (in part) to the introduction my oldest brother gave me when I was a tot. He had Lionel O & HO trains. He will be heading to that show and asked if I knew anyone who would be there.

Well, long day on little sleep, but did get some stuff done in the dungeon. Put up another shelf, carted 3 large boxes worth of trash out to the Great Pit, and almost finished clearing out the furnace room.

Nothing train related to report on...except finding my N/HO scale ruler. Needed that to start marking out roads on the wife's layout.

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Good Evening Gents (and Ladies),

I'll take the usual Thursday night bucket of coffee, black, ER strong...with Phillip's IV coffee drip on standby.

I have already filed my article (with info from the USAF) on the Bronze Star recipient, and on a new dollar store. I've got another article held up waiting for high-up muckety mucks at an investment firm to approve before I can file it, and had another potential story killed. Soooooooooooo, tonight I have to try and make sense of a plethora of new energy efficiency incentives, for an article to go in our monthly freebie paper.

I've been looking through what qualifies, what doesn't, how to get the tax credit for 2009 and/or 2010, and how the nearly 8 BILLION dollar spending bill fits into all of this. I got a stack of papers, and a whole lot of stuff stacked up precariously in my head. This has been a big part of my week (well, along with rolling on grass fires and a standby call for possibly landing the helicopter ambulance for a wreck). It's crunch time...and I've GOT to figure out how to break this down for the readers.

Funny thing about being a "reporter," you become a "subject expert" one topic and one week (in my case) at a time. Other than some quotes from a gal selling replacement windows...there's nothing in this article the readers couldn't see for themselves in any of a dozen (at least) places. But, orders is orders...and THAT editor has ordered up a piece on the incentive programs...and THAT she shall receive!

Completely unrelated, but I found a great photography job...but since I'm not an active member of the Iowa National Guard (life-long civilian, actually), I can't even think of applying for it. Nat. Guard only...so WHY did they post it on all the civilian job boards??? Sigh It starts at 46k/year. I do believe I could live on THAT... but, alas.

JEFF: keep an eye on that leg, we'd all hate to have you become a "guest" of the hospital again.

SAWYER: been forgetting to add my congrats on your scores, and how impressed I am with your school schedule. I always HATED school...felt like I was in some kind of prison. "Does not work up to ability" was a common comment on my report cards. DunceIt wasn't until I hit college, and started paying for my education...that I got serious. Even then, the subjects I liked or at least had interest in...I did great. If I didn't like it/didn't understand it/or really didn't need it other than for credits... well, C's get degrees. Either way, it sounds like you're laying a solid foundation for future success! I wish you the very best of luck Pal.

Everybody else: best wishes where needed.

I see the ladies brewed me up a fresh bucket... so will heft it on down the aisle to the back, where I'll be hammering this article out.

In case anybody gets bored in here this evening, here's the trackplan I mentioned earlier in the week...the one I thought would "solve" all my "problems;" but ended up with 4 to 6 feet of reach in the corner.Banged Head

And the CNW track plan for the prototype:

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a cup of coffee in a D&RGW mug, with one of those scrumptuous-looking chocolate chip cookies, please. Did you use all Hershey Kisses for the 'chips' in those cookies? Those are HUGE!Shock Do you have some sugar-free ones for our diabetic (or just dieting...) Diners? Oh, good. Oh yeah - and thanks, Galaxy! This should be tasty - yum! Dinner

CN Charlie, sounds like you've been having fun running all your different locos. Big Smile

Galaxy, we don't mind you being on the receiving end of the prayers, so hopefully you don't mind, either. WinkAngel However, if you're not careful, we're gonna have Big Bertha (the home health nurse) stop by to ration out your pain meds - you're having way too much fun with those!

Bill T., I enjoyed the photo of the chef and crew in the diner kitchen. Thumbs Up

Eric, I got my PM to you on your post mis-directed (meant to tell you that I thought it was dead-on about this Diner and its inhabitants), but thank you (and Mike, and Rob, and Jerry, and...). As I meant to write, the real questions will be "Can she ballast track?" and "Can she do scenery?" (And Jerry - don't remind me of how far it is from Mizzery to California... I'm still trying to see how many My 2 centsMy 2 cents it's gonna take just to get out there late this year or maybe next year...Sigh (As for my MRR'ing progress, it hasn't been that speedy since way before I met her, so I can't blame that on Mary, right?)

Yeah, Jeff, I think I'm getting the picture on how low down your totem pole a Hazmat training is...Oops But I think Lee is still trying to clean up the toxic spill from his training, and Barry may not be far behind you guys, either...Shock Chris - Whaddya think?Laugh

Jeff, that photo of your 'downtown' RR crossing area looks sharp! Thumbs Up And you take care of yourself, unless you like being hollered at by your doctor (and us)...Yeah!!

PC, I just figured for you it was that wind off the whitecaps in Lake Michigan, right? Smile,Wink, & Grin

SaronaTerry, you could just let your layout do the talking for you. You do have padded carpet on the train room floor, right? (It'll cushion his jaw from the drop...) Whistling

Chris - yeah, I got the "underachiever" label myself when I was in high school. But then again, it's not peachy to be following an older brother who was National Honor Society...Banged Head I was able to learn how to do well on standardized tests, though. (I think that's like "good at guessing which answer is most likely the right one"...)ConfusedYeah!! On your layout idea, what about making that yard in the upper-right corner all curved track (around the corner), and/or take out the backmost Quaker Oats (but leave the one closer to the aisle)? Just a random thought there...

I'll be settling down with my (grunt, heavy lifting here) mega-sized chocolate chip cookie now.

Prayers continue for those needing healing, comfort, a good night's rest... (or a shorter route to the Left Coast)

Blessings and Prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

I think Saturday is going to seriously, severely, and dang-near painfully SUCK... and that I hope I never have to use ANY of the training!

HO Bachmann question: I'm looking for (at least) one more "crossing track" for wife's layout. Which vintage brands work with Bachmann track? Tyco? Pemco? Revell? Others??? I will be cutting off the male ends on the EZ track so the vintage crossings will connect up OK. I know these are more "toy like", but they can be had cheap and still add some animation the wife appreciates. Also wonder if there will be any issues with them being brass rails?

Evenin' Folks!

Been a long day, I think I could go for a nice big cup of decafe in a R&GV Museum Mug, Flo.

Sawyer, I meant to congratulate you on your test scores and you choices for classes yesterday.  You will have a busy year taking some difficult classes, but you will be better off for challenging yourself!

Had a good rehearsal this evening for the Spring Musical.  The Settings/Scene Changes we programed in last night will work quite well for the first act.  Tomorrow we will check out the second act and hopefully that will be a go as well.  The kid who is working sound with me for the show wasn't in school today, and I hope will be around tomorrow, as he has to memorize when to change the mic set up for each scene.  He seems to know the play quite well so that should not be a big deal for him.  Oh, BTW they are doing "Kiss Me Kate".  Good cast and a great bunch of kids.  I have 3 rehearsals before the first dress rehearsal next Wednesday (another schools Drama Club will be coming to watch so they will have an audience.  Then 3 nights and a matinee for the show (technically the Thursday Night performance is a dress rehearsal as well but it is open to people in the community).

I printed out all the materials tonight for the Lakeshores Division NMRA Meet after I got home from rehearsal. I stopped in to the LHS here in town on my way to rehearsal.  He is giving a 10% to anyone who attends the Meet and has donated 3 books for door prizes.  Good man!

Prayers to all in need!

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Evenin’ all. Ya know a banana split sounds real good about now. It took a bit to get in. Door was stuck we must have parked in a bind. How do you do this response to mutiple quotes from several posts thing?Dunce Maybe I should read about forums how to some day.

Jim- Mailboxes! Why don’t I ever think about mailboxes! Thanks! (regarding comment about your Shady lane trailer park.)Oh yeah, she’s pretty. Good luck with pursuing the relationship in whatever direction suits you. (Did you notice I didn’t ask why she’s interested in you? LOL. Just kidding my friend)

Galaxy- Let’s see. Plenty of problems yourself and all we hear about is prayers and concerns for others. That says something about you. Bless you! Angel

Lee- I was feeling bad for you about the piggy flipping until you reminded me of the CFR/HAZ-MAT/ Fed and state “refresher” training. Ooooooohh what a lovely time that was. Even the coffee was horrible! I sure don’t miss that or any of the other “trainings” we had to go to.

SaronaTerry- Let him check out your layout. He may come to the realization himself and you may not have to say anything. He may just start asking how you did it.

Rob- About the brass rails part. There shouldn’t be any big problems with the brass. I have on my old section brass with intermingled NS I used for replacement/repairs and I haven’t had any issues other than the brass seems to need cleaned more to deal with connectivity (word? If not it sounds good) issues. With the locos. I’ve only had one joiner connection problem, but if you choose not to solder your connections, (I didn’t), you might want to solder the joiner to the rail on that particular connection. Just a thought.

Oh and in response to someone commenting on the “community” here. Isn’t that what makes this hobby different from many? The friendships and acquaintances made? I think we are just enjoying the full benefits of this hobby.

Well bedy bye time. Prayers for all.

SSSSSPPPPPLLAAAAAAAATTTTT!!!!! Oh NO! Not again!

Lee-

I was feeling bad for you about the piggy flipping until you reminded me of the CFR/HAZ-MAT/ Fed and state “refresher” training. Ooooooohh what a lovely time that was. Even the coffee was horrible! I sure don’t miss that or any of the other “trainings” we had to go to.

Todd-Are you sure that the 'coffee' being 'served' was not something else??

I'm having some interesting issues--I just discovered a mitt full of boxcars and flatcars that have mismatched wheelsets and now I'm trying to piece together what kinds of trucks I should get if'n I want to stick to something 70's/80's--ish in the truck dept. Any ideas?

Chloe--I'll have Chamomile Tea with some raspberry pie please--I'll go and siiiiiiyyyyttccckkk!!!!

Todd said ..."Jim- Mailboxes! Why don’t I ever think about mailboxes! Thanks! (regarding comment about your Shady lane trailer park.) Oh yeah, she’s pretty. Good luck with pursuing the relationship in whatever direction suits you. (Did you notice I didn’t ask why she’s interested in you? LOL. Just kidding my friend)".................Actually, I wondered about that, too.....Confused....... Then I recalled Jim CG is one of the nicest guys out there....... Still, however, it's a long way between Cape G and the Golden State.

Jeff ..... I'm sorry to learn about  the leg infection. You've been through so much. Best wishes and prayers for you.

Paul ... You and Mary Ann had better get over that bug......pronto.

Happy Model Railroading!
