Jeff- An old gas station. PERFECT place for a place called “Pack A Pig” I’d definitely stop in if I was passing by. That would be a place where you’d have the best chance for BBQ to die for! (did I just say “to die for?”)

There's a little old corner gas station in Cedar Rapids, not far from the Penford plant, that's been a hot dogs and burger joint for years. It's called "The Flying Weenie (sp.)" and has a Piper Cub type plane sitting on the roof.

Locals rave about it. The wife and I tried it out once...I didn't think it was all that great. The inside was rather grungy...OK for a gas station, not so cool for a food shop. Dead

Woodstock ON is home to a hamburg joint called 'Fritz's' Fries' This place was established around 1973 on the ashes of an even older greasy spoon---London ON has a few out in the east end along with a few motels that have been in the vicinity since the '50's.---There's still a lot of those kinds of places around---kind of makes one think that maybe placing a few of those around the layout might not be a bad ideaTongue

Got an especially long train (long for my layout) running today. Three locos on the head end (2 L&A SDP40F's, 1 UP GP40) 11 cars, a fourth loco (KCS GP40) and 11 more cars and the front and rear of the train are about 14 feet apart, so it's nowhere near chasing itself. The layout is bigger than it looks in photos you've seen.

Afternoon everyone!   A slice of pecan pie and a decaf while I wait for the work day to end.

Gray day today.  Typical Monday here at the shore.  Going to pick up a can of primer and test it on a small building I assembled for a boiler house for the coffee plant.  Haven't been able to get to HD for the foam, so I've been doing buildings until I get something on the framework.  I'd like to get some track laid down so I can see how much room ai really don't have!!!

Ordered a wood barge kit from Walthers that was on sale.  Figured it would look nice next to the pier that a company had on the river behind the plant.

It seems that Walthers is bringing out the waterfront series piece by piece.  I hope the pier kits come out too.  The Car Float (in transit), Tug, and Pier warehouse are already out.

OOPS!! It's the boss!  I'll take that pie and coffee to go!

Coffee in a Large UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

FIL is doing fine. Wife is on her way home.

Still working out the least amount of track needed to complete my (now simplified) layout. Wife only needs 3 strait sections of plain old Bachmann track for hers. Wish there was a train store nearby. Wife said it is a good thing there isn't one, or she could get in trouble.Laugh

Enjoying everyones pics, including those "catches".

Have a good day all. Cowboy Rob

Sawyer- Track plan “Loookiiing Gooood!“ (Sorry, Chico and the Man is a bit before your time) Boy I sure wish I was more comfortable with this forum when I was expanding my world. I was just getting on to this and I didn’t want to get derailed because of my lack o knowledge. Of course I now know that would NOT have happened here. I thumbed through track plans and combined what I thought would fit the space I had (and it did. With a few small exceptions). With the input from everyone I probably would have been a whole lot happier. Now it’s too late. Well, It’s NEVER too late. I just don’t want to tear everything up…..yet. NO! Stop That!

Hehehe, thanks Todd. Well, I talked w/ my mom on the way home from denstist (more on that in a sec), and looks like I'll hopefully get a 2x10 area, so just means that I'll be trimming the town bit off (which means the no scenery area now gets a town instead).

OK, the two bad things abt. the dentist (and only two): 1) the PITA flouride treatment!!!, and 2) your teeth are sensitive for about a day after.

I still love going to my dentist though, b/c he's also a model rialroader. I was the last kid he had before lunch, and got to talking abt. trains while he was checking my teeth and also afterwards. He's into HO scale, and that's abt. all I know.

Jerry, no I’ve decided to rebuild them and then sell them.  I picked up new wheels for the tenders and over the summer I’ll start replacing the motors.

Afternoon all

Bill here is one for you and this is what the caption says. Oh yeah, these are 2-8-4 Berkshires.

OLD RELIABLE: Lima 724 wheels KC-44 over the Indianapolis Division crossing and past the old division office at Tipton. This fine S-1, a regular on LE&W manifests, is likely to make the entire 223-mile run from Frankfort to Bellevue. As usual, high noon at Frankfort (below) finds PB-12 leaving town. The 716 and 725 will help move the hotshot over the remaining 469 miles to Buffalo, a feat to be accomplished in 14 hours.

Best to all on sick call and those recovering AngelAngelAngel

Talk to you later

Well give me cheeseburger, onion rings, and sweet tea.  I'm pretty hungry.

Here's a shot of the scrap yard I've been working on.  I still need to add some scrap, and some junk cars.  The white area is where the scrap will be.  In the far left corner is where the junk cars will be.  I handmade the fence.  I like how it looks "beat up".

Afternoon Gang: Not much going on in MRR land for me. I got the two lawn tractors out and started to get them in shape for mowing. I already need to mow what should be lawn but is all weeds. Since the burn ban has been lifted I need to light off the brush pile. It really isn't big enough to burn yet but since the ban could be put back on I need to get it going.

That's about it for now.

Ahhh Duke!! Those lovely Berkshires!! Just came up from the train room for a break, I have installing profile boards (WS) on the layout. The last few days I have been cleaning up the incredible mess from the December 12th ice storm. I used 5 gas loads in my chain saw in one day alone! In between this action, I take a break and get down to the train room. All this brush cutting, chain sawing , lugging branches and cut logs is what I call "savage amusement". LOL OK, glue is dry, back to work, coffee break is over.

Sad news, my brother in-law died, he was 62. He was a heavy smoker that just could not break the habit. To make matters sadder, he died in the hospital while his daughter was at her baby shower, her first child due next month. Ask me how I feel about Tobacco companies after loosing 4 uncles, one cousin, an aunt, and now my BIL all to lung cancer.

Coffee refill, please & thanks.

***Dick, sorry to hear about your BIL.

***Sawyer, must be rare that someone actually likes going to the Dentist. Cool that he is into mrr'ing.

***Robby, nice pics. What are the dimensions of your layout?

I got the drop on the fox this evening. Was finishing up in the barn when all the birds (geese & guineas mostly) started pitching a fit and all moving in the same direction. I looked over the gate and saw (to my surprise) they were all moving in on the fox that was walking/sniffing in circles in the middle of the barnyard. I flew over the fence and heaved my manure fork at it while shouting out "Try me you %#*&^'n fox!" I got within 15' before it could react and it sprung off faster than I have EVER seen a fox run. It raced across our pasture, through the creek, and kept running across the neighbors pasture at full speed until out of site. Guess there will be no goose eggs on his menu this evening.Laugh I'll wait a few days, then hang out in the barn and see if I can get some photos of it. Sure was a beautiful animal.

Evening all,

Dick, sorry to hear about your BIL

Sawyer, must be nice to have a dentist be a fellow MRR. Wonder if he'll let you get some train stuff for being a good patient.

Robby, looking good.

I tried re-constructing the gouges in the rear radiator grills on one of my U33Cs with Squadron green putty. It's not going very well, seems the putty breaks apart when cut. I looked on the web for what would work for this, and epoxy putties are what seems to be best for this. I did however fix the broken part of one of the cabs with it. So in a bit I'll paint the window edges silver. So I'm off to find some of that stuff, and a few #80 brill bits. I have managed to get the walkways and other things painted. hopefully later I'll get around to putting a TCS A1X in one of the U33Cs.

Rob, my layout is a 12ft long, 8ft wide (at the ends), and 2ft wide in the middle (where the track runs).  Its a dunk under.  I have no room to really expand.  That's where I am kicking myself.

Well I agree with the smoking.  I don't see how people pay for it.  Here is PA they are adding more taxes to them.  Where some packs will be $8+ a PACK!!!!  I have never smoked, and don't plan on it.

Hello everybody!

Dick ... That is so sad about your BIL. Prayers for family members. It must be a rough time. As for smoking, it's not that they kill people, it's how they kill people. Death by lung disease is just terrible.

Duke .... It's great to see you stopped by. Those 2-8-4's are really something. There is a C&O 2-8-4 at the KY Ry Museum. I wonder where you got the photos.

It's been a little busy here, and I have done too little on the layout in recent days.

Happy model railroading!

An Extra Prayer candle is lit for your BIL's passing.

I am a reformed smoker and can't stand the smell of it anymore. I picked it up from my mother who smoked. When I WAS a smoker, I was all for "smoker's rights", but now being on the opposite side, I am against it, and think it should be banned. I am asthmatic and don't need any more lung grief than I have already. Last year at this time I was in the hospital with pneumonia. Had I been a smoker still, it could have killed me. I am now very enamoured of breathing. Here in NY smoking is banned in all public places and Health Care facilities and government offices have even banned it from their campuses. Amen.

I ain't tried a cigarrete yet, and I have no intention to. I run and such, and smoking screws up your lungs etc., and you kinda need your lungs to run; therefore, smoking would screw me bad.

Good evening, All.

We spent most of Saturday and Sunday working on the layout.  Larry built a diorama to display my branchline station on.  It was his first attempt at scenery and it turned out well.

I did some weathering and poured  a hydrocal foundation for my scratch background building.

We are still getting snow in the rain.  I am ready for spring.

Later,

Sue

Evenin' everyone!

What a Day!  I spent 6 hours at school setting up and checking out the sound system for the Spring Musical.  Got a couple of odd jobs done around here as well, but not as much as I needed to.  Tomorrow will be shot as well.  My son and his family were going to try today to get up see his Grandfather while he still is lucid.  Didn't happen today so they are planning on going up tomorrow and I will go with them.  Most probably the last time we will see him alive.  Difficult time especially for my sister in law who has been doing all the major things that need to be done for several years now.  She has also gone through all her savings to help him and get him the care she wanted for him.  I will have to get back to Geneva mid afternoon to  get over to practice. (No practice tomorrow night - that will be clean the house time!)

Dick, my condolences on your BIL.  The smartest thing I did 30 years ago was to quit smoking.  I smoked cigars and pipe for many years.  It was my youngest son at about age 5 who shamed me into quiting.  I did and never turned back. Like some others, I don't even want to be near anyone who is smoking.  My next door neighbor smokes.  He will outside in all kinds of weather, shivering and coughing.  His wife won't let him smoke in the house.  Bet he dies of pneumonia.

Hopefully, I will see all of you in the morning.

Good morning all,

I’ll have the GREEN EGGS AND HAM for breakfast this morning in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day!

Downtown Cleveland should be a mess © today.  The town and surrounding area was settled by the Irish back in the late 1700’s and there is a huge parade most of the day and the bars will be open at 0600 this morning.  Travel by car will be impossible so I’ll be parking at the moorings and walking up the hill today to get to the office.

Jeff, I’m glad you can use those hatches.  I’ll call Randy this morning and see what he has on the order of 50’ Auto box cars.

Thursday when my LHS opens I think I’ll order two 348-23435 but in ERIE colors, can’t beat the price.

Morning All!  Chloe, The breakfast special and a decaf please!

Dick, my condolances and prayers.  I'm sure most of us, myself included have a smokers story to tell.  I'm 52 and I've had asthma since age 2, now I have COPD even though I never smoked... Dad did for 35 years.  It just goes on and on....

Finally painted the boiler house.  I'll forgo the mortor affect, it overwhelms the structure.  A wash will tone down the 'redness' of the building.  I'll post some pics after work.

A GOOD St. PATTIES Day to all you Irish folk. I'll have my usual irish coffee Zoe, only double the irish part.

A warm day with temps in the 70's n mostly sunny for here. It was so warm out yesterday I almost unsealed the sliding door, but it's a bit early for that, since their talking colder temps later this week.

Well there's a good sign of spring here, I'm getting my spring cold. It's an annual event for me.

DICK,,,, sorry to hear bout your BIL's passing.

TODD,,, do you think the Springfield model RR club swap meet coming up Apr 5'th will be worth our drive. Mother found out about it and is talking bout going up. So she can go by the mall I'm sure. The only way I'll go with her shopping is with bribery.

She also seen a flier for the swap meet in Decatur Apr 18 & 19, she brought to my attention. So I'm sure she knows a mall round there.

JERRY,, we've been married 16 years, but have been together 30 come July. There's some N scale metal wheel that came with some stuff to send in to ya one of these days.

On wild life news, a cougar has been seen out in this area. With all the deer round here, I guess it should be no surprise. I haven't seen any tracks up close to the house yet.

Spent most of yesterday on yard work, burnt leaves till the breeze picked. Then it was raking n haulen off time along with several loads of sticks.

Tested the engines from the meet, an all but one ran. I'm hoping it just needs a good cleanin.

Best get on ta chores n get done what I can afore I get kids up. Thoughts for all those in need n hope ya'll has a gooden

Happy St. Patties Day!!!!!

Chloe--I'll have a breakfast platter and a large bucket of caffeine please----

Got the back door to replace today--frame and all--so's I'll be spending the day doing that and some more yard cleanup to do. It will be quiet otherwise--gee I might get some MRR'iing done today!!

Todd How often do you get train shows out your way? We might be headed in your general direction sometime over the summer---

Inch      : I'm pretty sure that there are cougar out there--there's been a number of them seen around here as well. Of course, the experts always trot out the "someone's pet" theory or tell us we don't know what we're seeing---one guy suggested a while back that it was nothing more than a Great Dane---until spoor was found---got pretty quiet after that---

Oh well, I'll be by the windows watching the switching------
