Todd:  I had the same situation last night, everything just froze on me.  But I thought it was just my computer because after I closed IE and reopened and got back to the page, everything worked fine...

I get the IE8 hiccup---yup. This mornings message was a different critter though. It quite specifically said that it was a server error--Community Server cannot connect to page type of thing.

'Spring' is all cuddled up by the 'pooter right now--Whistling Here in ON they don't have a Duty to Retreat law but the idiot can charge me!!!!!Banged Head As for that Duty to Retreat law what dumkopf thought those things up?!?!?!SoapBox

Dern, when I got into the Diner it was at 14 pages, now I finish reading and it's 16!!!  I better hurry up and get this post finished so that I can read the next five that show up if the rate continues!!!

Jeff:  Might I suggest that you glue the foil to a thin sheet of styrene or if you have the clear windo glazing?  I think it would help prevent accidental "tears" from occasional handling and such as well as providing support for the foil (it wouldn't be able to "breathe" and start looking like curtains instead of metal!)

Barry:  You have a good guard-cat there...  Thank the Lord your neighbor helped out!  We wouldn't want you goin' all Friday the 13th on someone!!!  LOL

Phil: Thanks for the video!  Is all that background noise (other than the sandpaper/sock) the engine?  If so, it makes me really glad that I went the cork roadbed route!!!

Todd:  I had the same situation last night, everything just froze on me.  But I thought it was just my computer because after I closed IE and reopened and got back to the page, everything worked fine...

Eric:  Good luck with the lawyer today!

Well, I'm off to the basement to start sanding the roadbed!!!  Hopefully I can find some 16AWG wire around here so I can start laying track and wiring!

God Bless!!!

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Jeff, thanks on that ice cream building - I'll have to save your pic of that, and try to build something like it. Sigh You are taking care of yourself better, right? CowboySmile

I found out yesterday that the ice cream drive-in (Freezee) is an old Life-Like kit released in 1973. The kit is a retool of the McDonald's hamburger stand they dropped the year before due to not having permission from McDonald's.

And yes, I am taking better care of myself. More gravel will be moved today if everything goes well. One of the neighbors will be doing all the shovel work while I do the driving.

PC, will there be an updated video posted soon?

As soon as there's something worth showing I imagine.

Jim, thanks, and it is a bit unsettling.  And as for the language thing.......what do you, like, mean?

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have a chocolate donut and a cup of coffee, please 'n' thankyou.

No way I'll be able to get caught up on all the pages since I last was in the Diner, so my apologies if I skipped over anything you asked me, folks.

Jeff, thanks on that ice cream building - I'll have to save your pic of that, and try to build something like it. Sigh You are taking care of yourself better, right? CowboySmile

So, I see you all have been busy talking about... uh, - oh, that! Smile,Wink, & Grin Of course, one of my pet rants on language would be about the college (females, it mostly is, but I'm sure some guys may do this also) who are totally ('for sure..') unable to string together a sentence without, like , you know, like, putting a dozen of so uses of that word, like.... Sitting in one local restaurant (which tends to have high school age, travelling salespeople and yuppies for the majority of their clientele), I know that our Diners (teens or older) can do much better on verbal skills and make a coherent sentence (well, unless their mouths are full of pies or other food), so why can't the 20-somethings and local high schoolers here? SoapBox Okay, stepping down from the box now....

Our MRR club meeting was fairly brief on Monday. Our chief architect/DCC master/etc. has been working every day for most of the past two weeks (disadvantage of being salaried...) and was fairly worn down, plus we didn't have the suitcase connectors to start hooking up the feeders to the bus wires, so we had a short meeting and everyone kinda headed out. Kevin at least had time to get his laundry done that night.

Also, I will be possibly starting with DCC on my layout sooner than I'd thought. Our LHS owner/club member had bought some of the DCC stuff from the same guy I bought the structures and car loads. The LHS owner offered me a DB150 (? Think I have the model number right), which can be used as a command station and add the radio jacks (UT-something?) for wireless. He's going to sell me the DB150 for $80, and a power supply for about $25, so all I'd need would be a throttle (and maybe the radio if I want to start with that). The list on the DB150 is about $180, I think (plus the power supply), so I think it's a good deal. SmileYeah!! Now, to get the track wired out correctly and gapped where needed...

Congratulations to Bama (and your wife, who'll have the more laborious part of the matter...)!Thumbs UpWink

Sawyer - love the color scheme on your Geep!

Oh, on the forum software, when I returned by my bookmark to the page where I'd left off, the type was bolded and another size larger. I hit the reload button, and it corrected itself, at least. But apparently I missed the night of the Ooops messages. (Sounds like a 1950's B&W sci-fi film...Smile,Wink, & Grin)

Abudabbi, eh? Should be a dis-incentive for pie fights...

Barry, good to hear that Spring is earning his keep as your watchcat! Bow Good that you have an officer of the law as your neighbour, too.

PC, will keep your wife in my prayers. That's a bit unsettling for her, I would think. Angel

Well, I'd best finish up my donut and coffee. W**k awaits... Prayers will continue for all those of us in need (most, therefore).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

My little brother picked up a Bachmann Union Pacfic engine at a thrift store. it is in deplorable condition. Most of the handrails are missing and all of the steps are broken off. where the yellow is supposed to be there is gold. It kinda looks like a GP-40, Does anyone know if this came out of a train set? Or is it an older loco? It also has a "Cartrige Motor", You know, the motor frame and the gearcase are one unit. Also only one set of trucks are powerd.Dead Any advice on replaceing the motor, handrails and steps? HELP!

That sounds like one of the Bachmann offerings from the 80's - early-mid 90's. The motor you describe is a pancake motor. It will be amazing if it runs. Those motors were the worst kind of cheap junk. If the shell can be rebuilt you could refit it to a modern Bachmann GP40 frame. In all honesty though you would be better off ditching it. By the time you rebuild it you would have spent enough to buy one of the new Bachmann GP40's with DCC.

Already working on it, but he wants it, and my dad wants to repower, fix it, and make it look good. It runs though.

Eric, it depends on your State’s “Duty to Retreat” laws.  Ohio just abolished its duty to retreat so if an intruder enters your home he is fair game. I’m Active Duty Military and anywhere I live (under 10USC) I DO NOT have the duty to retreat. Hence anyone that breaks into my home may require medical attention for lead poisoning if they choose to stay and push the issue.

If I remember the first thread for the diner (called something else. Ryan just ref. it a little while ago) was HUGE.

Can't remember what it was called right now, but I remember something like 1200-1300 pages or something like that.

Great layout Philip.

Thanks!  I got a bit further then that before life got in the way.  I'm hoping to spend a lot more time on it in the very near future.

Mornin' all, (yaaawn) coffee, coffee, and um, some coffee please and thank you. Still tired but it's gonna be such a beautiful day I gotta get out.

Tom, glad to have you back. Was hoping the battle ground we had for a while didn't run you off. WhistlingVery kind of you to take in your friend. And those programs can come in handy. My wife is the same way on the Law and Order/NCIS. The BUH BUH! Is kinda like the striking of a clock on the hour. Helps me keep time. Oh and if we hear of a small earthquake in CA, we'll know Spooky is once again comfortable.Laugh

J.R. did you run across that box of engine bolts that you saved but don't remember what engine they go to. But even now still can't bring yourself to throw them away?Laugh

Barry, Sounds like the guy will get a bit of doin' without time. Unfortunately it usually doesn't work. Now maybe if he had gotten his little crack smoking, meth controlled fingers into your house...........? Mischief

Philip, your wife is in our prayers. She's in good hands.Angel

I haven't received this OOPS message on this forum. I have gotten it a couple of times on my Homepage.(the grain elevator s closing bid page), but never here. What I do get is all of a sudden everything just stops. The frame, shell or whatever you call it of the page loads and then , nothing. The activity light on the modem isn't even flashing. Refresh the page and I'm lucky if even the heading loads. Nothing. Come back in an hour, maybe I can get back on maybe I can't. I find it hard to believe that all of a sudden these long threads and archive hunting or whatever has caused anything. It sounds like the problem only surfaced with this new software. Sounds like the old stuff worked fine. If I remember the first thread for the diner (called something else. Ryan just ref. it a little while ago) was HUGE. If my truck ran fine, and I switched gasoline brands and it started running rotten. After a little bit of giving time to adjust. I wouldn't say "well I guess I just have to quit driving as much". I'd switch back.

Of course, every day at sometime in the morning and sometime in the evening. I loose internet connection. Don't know why, but it seems to have started here lately,. last week or two. This time RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF PC'S VIDEO AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGHHH!! OK it's back. Great layout Philip. Thumbs Up

Have a great day!

Trainman Sam

Phil:  Sorry, my ADD kicks in and 2 hours can seem like 2 days!  I was asking around yesterday at 4pm about whether or not I could use pushpins to hold the cork down, then at 10pm I asked which adhesive I should use, this morning is when I glued the cork down, but forgot to check the diner for any notes left with Chloe, and sure enough, there is the note about the tacky tape Martite  I'll have to keep that in mind for my large layout!!!  We'll see what the noise level is for this one too, the cork is actually about two years old!

No problem Sam.  As for the noise levels, I think you'd be able to hear sound equipped loco's real well.  To give you an idea, here's a video I made quite some time ago now that shows a lap of my staging yard and live interchange.  It'll give you an idea of what I'm talking about.  Note that about 20 seconds into this there is a sandpaper like sound for 10 or 15 seconds.  That is actually my sock as I drag my foot across the carpet!  I was trying to keep the camera steady for the shot.  It shows you how good the mic is though, and how quiet the rails are.  Notice too how the rails get louder where the train enters the staging yard area and the rails are laid directly on the foam.  (The perilous dropoffs have been corrected since this was shot.  I just wanted to see trains run!)  Anyways, here's the vid: http://s83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Autumns%20Ridge/?action=view&current=262699db.flv

Mornin' all!

Beautiful ride in on the bike this morning!  It was 31 degrees when I left the house, so full gear was the order of the day.  Man, those little thermal packs stuffed in some gloves make a world of difference!  Probably won't need them later though.  It's supposed to be in the 50's this afternoon.

Indianapolis, Indiana
Currently: 37°F Mostly Cloudy

Wind: Southeast at 9 MPH
Humidity: 52%
Dewpoint: 21°F
Barometer: 30.17 inches and steady
Wind Chill: 30°F

Today: partly cloudy until midday then becoming mostly cloudy. Highs in the lower 50s. South winds 5 to 15 mph.

In other news, I had to take the wife to the hospital last night for an EKG.  She been nauseated since last Thursday, and when she went to the doc's yesterday (finally, after me begging her to go), they told her that she had a fast heartbeat, and that could be the cause of the nausea.  I'd never heard of that, but we went for the test.  It was hard for them to get a good reading because of her nerve damage, but we got it done.  We find out the results today.  It's strange though, because nothing has changed for her recently.  No new medicines, the only change in routine is that the ladies Bible study she hosted every Teusday morning is meeting elsewhere starting last week (so that actually takes pressure off of her).  It's odd.  I'm concerned, but I know she's in God's hand, so it'll be what He want's it to be.

Oh well, I'd best be off!

Prayers for all in need!  Yeah, thats you!  (Me too!)

Barry; sounds like a close call!!  I don't know how your law works up north of the border but down here he could've charged you with a weapons offense if you swung at him.  Good thing the cop was there.  Sounds stupid but criminals have more rights than the rest of us do down here. Angry

Well, back north to see the lawyer today.  Now the fun starts.

Good morning from Euclid, Ohio!

Tom, yes you can fry a motor.  Reading the Digitrax Q&A you can fry a motor if you use too high a voltage or amperage.  Are you running open frame motors or can?  If you are running open frame you may need new motor brushes. Brushes are easy to replace if you can still find them.  I’m having a similar problem with the older Mantua locomotives that spent their life running in circles.  The motor brush on the right side of the motor is almost worn down by 50% and the left brush looks almost brand new.

Went to run trains last night to break-in a locomotive and to my surprise tiger (Dorothy’s cat) was sleeping on the mainline behind a box I had sitting on the unfinished side of the layout. Not sure if it was the 12.9v at 8 amps or the cat catcher on the front of the locomotive that caused the ensuing panic and chaos. No Berkshires were harmed in this event.  I guess I need to post no trespassing signs on railroad right of way.

 Good morning.

It's 57 and mostly cloudy. The high will be around the mid 70's and it will be mostly cloudy.

Today I'll be back into the work of moving gravel but with a very notable difference. One of my neighbors will be doing all the shovel work and I'll be doing the driving. Progress on converting the 85' observation car to MoW service continues. I've picked out a pair of doors for it. Now I have to cut the openings to set them over. After that I'll be putting pieces of painted aluminum foil over the windows so they'll look like steel sheets were welded over them.

Good Morning All,

I see I'm not the only one moving. A regular and a danish please Zoe. Good job we fitted that GPS tracker device the new siding is quite a bit out of town this time.

Been busy with the shop move as we're trying to get finished up this week plus get a car shipped to Fla for this weekend. I had hoped to go back to west Palm Beach for the event and stay through Sebring next week but am so far behind in the move that i sent the guys down without me. The Sebring 12 hour race weekend will be my next time out and we should be settled by then. The joys of moving 10,000 sq ft of accumulated stuff from the past 30 years plus the cars and shop equipment.

Did go to the museum last night for layout work. Still making stuff for the O-gage and finished the elevated track which features an RDC shuttling back and forth. If I ever recast the portals, I'll get the roundhouse done and buid a hill with tunnel to hide the end of the RDC's back and forth. We used a Dallee back and forth module in DC and converted the RDC (a Williams) to DC as well so it is less prone to stalling out. Next will be to find some O scale building fronts to bash into a two level train station.

Gotta run, I was in early to get the truck launched and need to get back after the rest of it, still lots to move if we're to finish by the weeks end.  CUL, J.R.

Evening all:

AAARRRGGHHHHHH!!

Sorry, I've been remiss in dropping by.  I've hit the Forum a little bit in the last month, but not the Diner.  Hope everyone is well.  No, I didn't get kidnapped by Aliens.  I've just been adapting to something I didn't think I'd ever have to worry about--at least not at my late age--A ROOMMATE!!!

Okay, we've been buddies for a number of years, but The Recession put him in kind of a bind.  He's a Pathologist with Kaiser Foundation, and his Stocks just went bye-bye.  He's the guy I might have told you about earlier, whose cat I was baby-sitting while he was looking for a Condo in the area.  After dealing with a whole bunch of Condo-Nazi's, I finally said, "Dang, I've got a fairly big house and spare bedrooms, you might as well move in with Wiezl until things even out.".

Well, he has, and we've been going through a Period of Adjustment (can you say ODD COUPLE, LOL?).  So anyway, here we are PLUS three cats.  He's a very cool guy, and he likes classical music and old movies (so do I) but he has this thing about watching every re-run of CSI Miami/NY/Las Vegas and NCIS that comes on TV.  Man, those shows are really STARK at times, LOL.  He also gets on E-Bay and tells me about all these neat brass locos I might want, which I think is nice of him, but I wouldn't go on E-Bay if my life depended on it.  However, his hobby is Antiques, and he's always looking for Very Weird Bargains.

Luckily, my lady friend likes him a lot, so there's not a lot of conflict in that department.

Anyhoo, sorry about being gone, if you missed me.  Getting stuff in order, you know.

Haven't done much on the MR lately, however I DID get my first Proto 1000 car the other day, a UP drop-bottom gondola.  Weighs a ton.  Unfortunately the detail isn't what I expected, but it'll look okay.

Anyway, I've got a Stupid Question.  Anyway, my MRC DC controller 20 has a dual-mode control--for HO and N, and also for larger scales, mainly G.  The G-scale offers about 18 volts DC, where the HO is the standard 12 volts.  Now I understand that dual-mode DC/DCC steamers take a lot more voltage to realize their maximum range on pure DC, and I've been using just the last quadrant of the controller to work them.   I've been reading that using the 18 volt portion of the control will give you a much better range in the dual-mode.  My question is, will going above 12 volts damage the motors of regular DC?  Hate to sound like a Newbie at this, but I'm really confused.  As you guys know, I've got FAR too many brass lokies that I love and adore, to think of spending the money to pop in decoders---and I've been given to understand that decoders in brass locos don't work that well, anyway--so I'm just wondering what kind of problems I'm in for just popping the control up to the higher DC voltage.

Any and all answers will be appreciated.

Sorry if I've been remiss here--it's just been really BUSY around here.  Besides, as I told Barry in a private e-mail, Spooky the Princess has decided to get a stuck hairball that I'm trying to oil out of her.  She is not a happy kitty.  Vet said to give her hairball medicine every hour on the hour.  Remington and Wiezl can hardly wait to see which end it comes out of.  It should be the size of Nebraska.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

'Spring' was recently in BIG PICKLE mode---He just ran up the front of the secretary desk in the living room, jumped off the top and tore off down the hall, attacked the back of the chair in the hall, ran back into the kitchen, jumped onto the fridge, on to the cupboard, jumps from there over to the other side of kitchen on to top of cupboard, jumps on to the breakfast nook cabinet then tears into the back of the house. He then ran up the stairs and then, like the herd of charging Rhinos he's become runs back down them again--He's settled down after I caught him in mid flight trying for the secretary desk again and gave him a football cuddle--wherein he struggles to get away from me and I hold on to him----Sheeesh, talk about energy--in a 10yr old cat.Whistling

I'm going to start to get ready for sleep sp you all have a not so rushed evenin'Zzz

Eric:  Glad your trip was safe!  Hope you get all squared away without going bonkers!  We are here for you my friend!

Jeff:  Thanks for the compliment!  Luckily I didn't have to build the benchwork, so that saved me a lot of time and headache...  I love carpentry, it just doesn't love me back!!! LOL with a big throbbing red thumb!!!

I'm hoping to finish sanding the cork roadbed tomorrow morning, that way I can start on the tracklaying tomorrow afternoon!!!  I just have to relocate my soldering iron!  It is in one of these boxes over heeeEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRREEEEEE

Face PlantMan, when did I put that rollerskate on the floor, wait, the name tag in it says... I can't make it out, starts with P and the last three letters are "ell"  Who could that be??? Whatever...

Anyway, If I am going to be using Bachmann EZ Command, how many feeders should I use on this switching layout?  I'll repost the layout design, but keep in mind that currently I will not be modeling the engine facilities and associated trackage.  I actually found the original drawing of the MRP '06 layout plan, which is the configuration that I have on my layout now...  I am planning on installing feeders on each of the "runaround" tracks, the "main line" which is the track running across the entire layout at the bottom, as well as each of the spur tracks.  Is that about right?

This layout drawing shows the creek that I am currently debating whether or not to put in...  I can always add it at a later date...

Thanks for all the help and motivation to get this layout up and going!  Without talking with you here in this diner, I probably wouldn't have even attempted this project!

Sam

May He bless you, guide you, and keep you safe on your journey through life!

Evening all. Nothing for me thanks. I'm extremely tired tonight so I think I'll call it an early night.

I was wondering about Tom myself. I see where he's been in the forum but not in the diner.

guess I'll poke around for a few minutes and head to bed.

Prayers for those in need.
