Evening Gang: The last two cars of my Twin Cities Hiawatha are on the way. I also ordered two additional express cars and two coaches. Being able to get them at whole sale prices has got me into a bad habit. By the way if any of you want some Walthers passanger cars they have a sale in the March Flyer and some of the cars are less then whole sale. Also in the March Flyer is a photo of the Hulett. Since my railroad is at the north end of the lakes I can't use one but they are deffinately NEAT.
Well since I got up at 4am I guess I should turn in. The grand kids are coming at 6:30am. We'll take the oldest to the bus and then take the 3 yr old to breakfast at What-A-Burger and then to pre school. At 12 noon we pick her up and she gets to play with grandma.
Good Night All

Yeah, I got OOPS'd out of the diner and the whole web site too last night. That seems to be fairly frequent since the new format. Things that make you go "hmmm".

Todd
Yes, Todd, when one is sick one wants relief, not to hear "let it run it's course", especially when paying for the advice. But it is a virus, and viruses don't respond to antibiotics anymore {bacterial infections DO} so the treatment nowadays for a virus is to let it go and use products that only relieve the symptoms of the virus.
Last year about this time I checked into the Lourdes Hospital "Grand Hotel" in a specially private third floor room on the respiratory floor overlooking the parking lot for a few weeks with pneumonia, treated with four kinds of steriods and had an opportunistic bacterial and opportunistic fungal infections set in, so I have to consider myself lucky now, I guess. Don't need that again.
Hope everyone has a swell night!
Gonna bake some brownies tonight, anyone want some?

nik .nMy little brother picked up a Bachmann Union Pacfic engine at a thrift store. it is in deplorable condition. Most of the handrails are missing and all of the steps are broken off. where the yellow is supposed to be there is gold. It kinda looks like a GP-40, Does anyone know if this came out of a train set? Or is it an older loco? It also has a "Cartrige Motor", You know, the motor frame and the gearcase are one unit. Also only one set of trucks are powerd. Any advice on replaceing the motor, handrails and steps? HELP!

I hate political corruption Two judges in the county next to mine was charged for corruption. They sent kids MY age to certain juvenile centers for money.
On a less serious note...

Hey Sawyer, nice loco paint scheme ya got there! What imaging tool do you use?
'thanks Ryan. Just regular old Microsoft paint. Like I said, I just applied the color (except for the white, which is what was on the loco originally). Stan Lytle actually drew the loco outline.
ok, so my other layout is only really good for running trains, so say hello to my new switching layout (sorry for the bad quality;camera was dying, and didn't have a tripod that reaches that high):
in this photo, you can see why I can't use a tripod
Very blurry, but you can make out the track arrangment:
and before you tell me, yes, the run-around can't support anything at the ends but the engine. Yes, I know, and yes, it will be a pain, but no, I'm not changing it, because I have no room to extend the layout.

Cederstrand I was pounding the lid back onto the can with the blunt end of a large screwdriver when it slipped.
I quess we've had too many OSHA, POSHA, EPA, training sessions here... When replacing a lid on a can, first clean the lip of the can with a clean rag and properly dispose of the rag, then obtain a block of wood larger than the diameter of the lid and can. Place a new clean rag over the lid, place wood block over rag and lid and press firmly, then tap the wood around the can lid with a rubber mallet until the can is sealed. Properly dispose of rag and wood, clean any remaining paint from area and dispose of in proper container.
Those digits are important! You can only point with so many of them before you make someone mad!
Rob,
Back in the days of Link & Pin couplers, you could easily tell a greenhorn from a good man. A greenhorn still had all his digits. If he was pretty good, he was missing one finger. If he was really good he was missing two. If he was missing three, he was a conductor.
Now Rob, it hasn't worked that way for nearly 100 years. Walking around without digits is no longer the badge of honor it once was. Save yourself the trouble......keep your digits!
Be careful man! We don't want that wife of yours having to practice her nursing ON YOU!
Finally made it back home at 2:00am this morning. Flight was delayed due to wind in Newark. Cabin temp never went above 65 and the coffee was always " BEING MADE!" but never showed up. Felt like I was flying AREOFLOT (Russian airline)
Been trying to catch up on all of these pages! I've never, ever had an 'oops', a little slow sometimes but the pages always loaded..... I have a Verizon card on the laptop and Optimum at home. Maybe because I'm in the New York area? Had no trouble in Texas either..... Why????? I feel left out.... so alone...
Um.. decaf... and some pie?
Coffee refill, please & thanks.
***Philip, never heard of Martite, but going to look into it for sure. Looks like it would work fine for flex track.
I figured out which one of the bundled hydrolic lines for the loader is leaking. Will remove it tomorrow and head over to the nearest NAPA.
After finishing painting some wood strips, I was pounding the lid back onto the can with the blunt end of a large screwdriver when it slipped. Needless to say the edge of my little finger was almost removed from the nail. Had to stop to clean and wrap it up. It's gonna look mighty perdy tomorrow. Gittin' tired I guess.
Need to plant one more tree and then carry buckets of water to get them settled. Was using the tractor for that until the line sprung a leak.
Not exactly my best day ever. Rob
LSWrr Now I feel left out and deprived! I haven’t seen this OPPS message everyone talks about.
Oh just give it time Lee, and you'll see it too...
It's really very nice, big, friendly letters saying "OOPS!" It's almost like the web techie geeks were trying to make it... light-hearted, almost fun to get a fatal error message.
It's like a "gosh-darn... golly gee whiz... *chuckle giggle snort," shucks...guess we've got a little glitcheroo here folks..." kind-of look to it.
Those rascals...
Hmmm. Maybe I need a little break here...

Well its afternoon already. How time goes by.
I have a old Bachman laying around that the wife got me last year. It wasn't running due to the driveshaft (or what ever you wanna call the piece) was always coming off. So.......I made the engine a dummy. Took the motor out, and it runs great. Metal wheels and all!!! I will have to take some of the weight out. Just still a bit heavy.
Well I guess I will watch some more soccer. Man that use to be my sport.
I will pop in for dinner, plus I need to catch up.

Rob, I’m running Mallets, Challengers and HW passenger cars. In the past I’ve used 36” curves and everyone was happy. This layout I have a 3 track main with 36”, 38.5”, and 41” curves. Everyone is happy. However I’m running HO-Scale and not N-visible. I think there is a cross reference chart on the NMRA web site. I’ve been told you need to build the helix first then the rest of the layout.Lee
Chloe, I am just stopping by for a quick lunch. It looks like some of these guys are working on their layouts.
Good job.
Sue

blownout cylinderPC: The Mortile--how wide is that? How much do you get per roll?
It's exactly as wide as Atlas HO scale track, so you can create your own natural looking ballast profile just the way the real RR's do. For N scale I just tear it lengthwise in half. Each roll is about 12 feet long out of the box, give or take (so, 24 feet or so in N scale). I get mine from the local hardware or home improvement store in the off season (like now) and stock up. I usually pay around $2-$3 dollars per package. It comes in the brown I showed, and also a light grey.
Cederstrand ***Philip, nice pictoral tutorial there. Want to come over and build mine?

Shoot, I barely have time to work on my own!
Cederstrand Has anyone here ever assembled one of those (Heljan?) tall strait plastic timber trestles? Are they real easy (ie: quick) to assemble?
Has anyone here ever assembled one of those (Heljan?) tall strait plastic timber trestles? Are they real easy (ie: quick) to assemble?
I had one of those in N scale years ago. It was a good kit that went together pretty well. Just make sure everything is square each step of the way before you move to the next step. Mine could be built as a straight or curved, or half and half (a curve that straitens out). I don't know how well the tooling has held up over the years. The molds might have a bit more flash on them now, but it's a good kit.

Afternoon all. Chloe, I'll take a bacon cheeseburger, thanks.
Forgot to mention that we lost our game on Sunday 6-2. THe first playoff game is on Saturday We (4th place team) are playing the same team again (1st place). IF we win, we play for the championship on Saturday. If we lose, our season is over. We are 6-4-2, not bad considering that we're only a second year JV team. I really hope we go varsity next year.
Since we got out early today (parent conferences), I'm gunna run some trains and stuff. Same thing tomorrow (Ash Wednesday).
Have a great afternoon. Prayers for all.

***Bill, those are some real neat photos. Thanks for posting them.
***Jerry, what was that Band Master like to work with? Those bands with the larger circuses were known for tight, crisp, sometimes complex & intense rythyms. And just think, whatever the weather, the show (including musicians) had to go on.
***Sam, you are making excellent progress!
***Lee, the larger the radius the better. Largest loco is a Big Boy and largest car is a whale-belly tank car. Industries: main one is the "Soylent Green Plant". Smallest "Farmer Vincent's Smoked Meats". Wy wife is going to let me model the Deliverence river scene on her layout. (in N scale, who would ever see it?) Yea, it's "that" kind of layout. I will incorporate some switching area around the main industry, for times when I want to do more than watch trains run. Also, one small turntable. Remember, on each end of the shelf will be a small table. This will allow "loop running", a place for the TT and hopefully a helix. Might never finish it in my lifetime, but by god I want to be running trains before the end of this year. I'll sneak into the train room and see how deep 24" is to work on. Might be just the ticket to have the second level tracks.
Keep the coffee coming. Rob
last mountain & eastern hogger Hey good Buddy, what have you been smoking ?? It is WHITE glue that is water soluable not YELLOW. You need to take another ride on that bike and clear the noggin.

You're right.....my bad! I'll edit my earlier post. (BTW, can you tell my boss I need to go ride? PLEASE!)
pcarrell Yellow glue will work, but it requires copious amounts of water to make it release if you ever want to change something, and water & electricity don't mix well. It also doesn't mix well with finished scenery. Lastly, it dries hard, so it can amplify sound.

Trainman SamI have not touched a pie shell since I made my retreat from the "Food Fight Arena" back in the last diner! I just wanted to clear the air. Ask Chloe, she'll tell you that I have been a perfect angel on that front!
Is that like, the battle front?
Trainman Sam On the layout front, I am just going to go ahead and glue the cork down with the foamboard adhesive. I can't get an answer from anyone as to whether or not the yellow glue will affect the foamboard...

Sam, remember, some of us are old farts! You gotta give us more then two hours to respond my friend!
Trainman SamHey guys? Am I able to use yellow glue on the pink extruded foam insulation board? Or should I just stick (no pun intended) with the foam board adhesive to glue down the cork roadbed?
Guess this is probably too late, but here goes anyways........
Yellow glue will work, but it dries hard, so it can amplify sound. It's also a pain to change things if you ever decide to.......not that ANY of us have ever changed our minds........
I use cheap latex caulk for the adhesive. It works with the foam and the cork, but honestly, I've never been a big fan of cork. It dries out, gets brittle and hard, and when it gets hard it can actually amplify sound. Some have suggested that Topper tape (the foam adhesive tape used for hop caps on pickup trucks) is a good way to go, but I found it to be a bit more expensive then I'd like. But all is not lost friends and neighbors!
I've been using this rope caulk as roadbed for a few years now and it's great! Dirt cheap too!
(Click any pic to enlarge)
It comes in a roll like this........
And I use a wooden wall paper roller (the kind used to do the edges when hanging the paper) to smooth it and create trasitions in rail height or superelevated curves easily.
It's flexible, and stays that way for many years, so it's quiet, and it's very easy to work with.
I can lay dozens of feet of it in just minutes, and since it's just a little tacky, it stays where I put it with no further adhesive. Ballast and scenery will hold it in place when all is said and done. I pull it apart lengthwise for N scale widths, for HO just use it straight from the package.
This, and more, was all laid in about ten minutes and is ready for track.
(This shows with the track installed, but it was part of that which went down in about ten minutes. Obviously, the track took longer. The cheap latex caulk I use to secure the track sticks to this stuff well too.)
I don't know if this will work for you, but it works for me!
CNCharlie Just dropped in to say thanks to PC for the advice on that Proto N Berkshire. I think I'll pass on that one. I plan on going with DC to start but want all locos that can be relatively easily converted. I'm looking at a Bachmann Mountain and according to the info I can find it is a relatively easy conversion.

The Bmann Light Mountain, Heavy Mountain, and Connie are all easy installs. My first ever install was a Connie, and it was a snap. Looked like I'd been doing it for years! There are several good sources for decoder install instructions in N scale. This is a good one: http://www.trainweb.org/nrmrc/dcc/conversions.html Also: http://www.tcsdcc.com/N_Search/search.html Hope those help!
