***Jim, I don't really know how big an engine house I'll need. Sure won't need to be nearly as big as before I sold off all those vintage locos over the past couple or so years. No regrets though, as all the upgraded locos I have now are good runners. Oh, could be one exception, might have kept one old Lima 2-6-4, just for the heck of it. If I still have it, that one can live on a non-powered siding. Truth is, I think one roundhouse with perhaps 3 stalls and 1 two-bay engine shop should take care of what I have. Would rather have most of them out where I can see them anyway.

Thanks for the comment on the deck & ramp. Thought it came out alright. Still lots more of it to build, but now that the wife is happy, I can take my time with the rest of it.Wink [;)]

No word from Jeff in six hours.  Looks like that storm is giving his locations lots of rain. No need to water the grass.

Happy Model railroading.

I would bet he is one of the one million without power

I bet he's upset !

If I had to guess, it's because either A) the storm knocked out the internet, or B) if he's got Wi-Fi, it can't get a link because of all the clouds. I know there's a generator there. Maybe the generator's out of gas, in which case he's probably cursing up a storm, lol (I'm just joking around jeff).

Evening Gang:

Packers I think that Ol' Al is back. I think that others have hit the abuse button on him. Me I just try and ignore him.

I got another 50ft or so of the UP right of way cleaned up. That's on the south side only. That took about 3 hours. I need to go to Ellis tomorrow and pick up a couple of saw chains for the pole pruner and drop off the dull ones for sharpening. The pole pruner works very well for cutting brush since I don't have to bend over and crawl through the under brush. Of course cutting so close to the ground causes the thing to hit the dirt and rocks sometimes. That really dulls the chain fast.

Rob I didn't think an excuse was needed to buy another new loco except " I want it."

I see that Lothar has found a job. I'm very happy for him. It's rock hard being out of work for so long.

We got moved back into our bed room tonight. Now I have to find the remote for the dvd player. They do this to me every time they stay with us. Now that the kids are so close ( just 2 miles away instead of 600 ) they won't be staying over night when they visit and I won't have to drive 600 miles to see the grand kids.

Well I'm going to take daisy the dog for her evening walk.

Jeff you take care and my best to everyone.

Jeffs connection is not the greatest to begin with.  Rain often knocks it out.  Suddenlink is his DSL provider (Wi-Fi is too costly) and they don't have very good facilities in his area.  It wouldn't surprise me if he's down for a while.

Good evening gents, just about finished painting the fron of the house and half of the south side. These are the two toughest sides to do. The weather has been ideal to paint, and we may get hit by the rains of Hannah, or even the 3rd Hurricane that has now formed out in the Atlantic, so I want this done NOW, or I may not get a chance later this year.

Jeff is at his parent's house, much safer than the trailer. But they have lost power I am sure, and certainly the internet is OUT.

FERGIE: We haven't heard from you, so I must assume that their is no satellite internet service where your ship is located. I will have to check the tracking of the Hudson to see where you are.

Well, I am off to bed, got to get the rest of the house painted tomorrow.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good Morning All,

A regular and a plate of the scrambled eggs with sausage and home fries would be great. Thanks for the buffett Bill.

Gustav was less wild than feared, but it still packed quite a whallop. Hope Jeff and his folks made it through ok with no damage. Looks like we have a conga line of storms brewing one after the other.

Packers - my prayers for the family of your friend. It's tough to lose a friend so young.

Rob - nice progress on the deck and walkway.

Lime Rock went well enough but we lost the gearbox on my old Lotus 18 when one of the ring gear bolts sheared and went through the case. We'll need to build up a whole new box. Weather was nice and today we unload/reload to leave for Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Speaking of storms CPTV had a documentary about the Conn floods of 1955. We had lots of rain where I was at the time, but I had no idea of the ferocity of the flooding (whole factories washed away along with many houses along the Naugatuck River) and cities and towns from Thomaston to Ansonia were devastated. Danbury too had major flooding with the center of town ending up under three feet of water, but the major damage was to the north and east.

Well, breakfast is done, time to get on with it.     See y'all later.   J.R.

Morning all!

Looks like Gustav is pretty much over.  Now it's just the cleanup.  Hope to hear from Jeff soon, but who knows with his flaky connection provider.

Oh well, off to work!

Good morning,

Well I hope all is well with Jeff, I look forward to hearing how he faired the storm.  I heard a huge number on the radio this morning: 1.5 M customers are without power down there so it might be a while before he gets power back.

Rob, looks like you are making good progress on the deck and stuff.  How is the rest of the house coming along?

Morning all. I start school in about 30 minutes. Just enjoying it.

Anyways, while bored yesterday, I made a formula to find out what type of steam engine you'd be... It's a little complicated. Not too bad I don't think though.

Height=Length of loco (no tender) I.E. 5'7'' 50 ft, 5'8'' 55 ft, 5'9'' 60 ft, etc.

Weight multiplied by two = weight of loco in tons

Weight also means how many pilot or trailing wheels there are... 180, two sets of four. 150, one set of four and one set of two. 120, two sets of two. 90, one set of two. Less, nothing.

Foot size = Driver diameter, size 10 and 10.5= 60-64 inch diameter drivers, 12 and 12.5, 70-74, size 9, 55-59...

Now this is the interesting part. To find out how many drivers there should be, we make the driver diameter into feet (rounded) and put 1' spacing in between each, and see how many will fit.

Also, the pilot and trailing wheels take up 10 and 8 feet of the engines length, so the drivers have their own spot.

So, as an example, me:

Height: 5'7''
Weight: 150 lbs
Foot size: 14.5 (runs in the family)

That makes me a 50' engine, with a set of 4 and a set of 2 trailing/pilot wheels, and 300 tons. Now for the drivers, I'd have 80" which is close to 7', so lets try four. 7x4= 28' of length, plus 1' spacing in between the three=31'. 50-18 (for pilot and trailing)= 32'. Perfect.

I am a 4-8-2 mountain, 300 tons, with 80'' drivers.

So, this is the formula I made. Yes I was bored, any suggestions or improvements? Or go ahead and find out what type of steam loco you are!

We got three inches of rain from Gustav and it's still coming down. I really don't like it. I LOVE IT!

Good to see most of us didn't have any issues. My power is still out , and it's drizzling rain, not exactly the 10" they were predicting.

The "eye" went over me a couple minutes ago.

Afternoon Diners,

Glad to hear Jeff and Geared Steam are doing ok, C&O wish you luck your next (right?) The high pressure system in my area will keep the storm south of me, if you remember Katrina (and 2 other major hurricanes) died over my house and flooded out my basement/train room.

We have 3 tropical storms on radar now: Hanna, Ike, and Josephine

The only damage I can find to my trailer is a cracked window pane. Since it's made of lexan some JB weld will fix that.

Hey Zoe, since Jeff is back so quickly (and no obvious ill effects from Gustav), I'll treat for root beer floats for everybody! Cool [8D] It's the post-Gustav-hurricane party! Ryan, whatcha got on the menu for lunch today?Yeah!! [yeah]

Jeff, that's amazing that you have power back up already - are you posting from your folks, or from your place? Couldn't tell. Great to hear you all came through fine and dandy. Now, if the rest of the 1.5 million folks get their power and internet back as quickly...

Geared Steam, you must be running a laptop (or have a generator, and have your internet connection still up), if you're posting, right? Good to hear you've had no major damage in your area.

Sunny and muggy here in Cape G. today, courtesy of Gustav. We might get some rain in the afternoon, but that'll be the usual summer afternoon popup shower if we get it, rather than part of Gustav.

Root beer floats around!

Blessings,

Smile [:)]Jeff and GS:  Seems you weathered Gus pretty well--I'm really glad that both of you suffered little damage.  I was watching the storm track on the Weather Channel and it looked pretty wet and ferocious.  I'm glad it dropped a degree or two in ferocity when it hit the coast.

Well, haven't been on here very much the last week--spent it in the hospital.  Seems when they cleaned out the knee they didn't quite get everything and I ended up with a Staph infection and surgery to completely rebuild the darned knee.  I'm home now, trying to be comfortable in a leg-brace and I'm kind of incapacitated for the next 4 to 6 weeks.  Have a semi-permanent tube in my right arm for 3 times a day antibiotic injections, and my appetite is absolutely Nil.  So nothing for me today, Flo.  Just took me a half-hour to eat a hot-dog.  Everything tastes like sawdust.  Yuck!

Which means that Back to School doesn't happen for me this semester, I'll have to wait for the Spring semester to go back to the guys.  Funny thing in the hospital, while I'm lying there with all sorts of interesting tubes in me, who comes barging in but Father Wanser from the school.  He stares at me, I stare at him, I swallow and ask, "Are you here for Last Rites?"  He laughs and says, "Why, do you want them EARLY?"  So he performed a Healing Mass for me.  I think it's working--what little pain I've got can be taken care of with a couple of Aspirin.  Great guy, Father Wanser, when he heard I was in the hospital, he turned his class over to a Proctor so he could dash out and spend a little time with me.

In the meantime, a friend of mine is taking Lowell over for HIS daily injections.  Little guy's getting weaker, but still eats like a horse and seems pretty chipper.  It's a 'wait and see' proposition.

So, any model railroading I get to do for a while is going to have to be done at the kitchen table then put in a "To Transfer" box for when I can start going back out into the garage.  I found out that the tanks I was going to use on the military train are 1/72 scale--well, DUH!  No WONDER those tracks hang over the sides of the flatcar.  Looks as if I'll have to order some to-scale stuff from Walthers if I can ever get hold of a catalogue.

Well, that's about it from SunnyCal.  Couple of new fires out here, but they were small and got put under control pretty easily.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Glad to see that everyone made it out alright.

I'm at home today since I've been under the weather for the past few days but I'm starting to feel better. (no more sore throat or runny nose, just a minor headache) Hopefully I get better soon so I can go to the train club tonight.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Been there and done that. With me it was my right foot where the staph got a hold. In another few days I would've lost the foot. I got to know that sawdust taste very well.
