GMT, thanks, no hurry.  Let me know what I owe you for shipping.  What RR are you modeling?

Fergie, thanks for the offer on the cab ends looks like GMT is bailing me out of trouble this time.  I hope you get into port before bad weather.

FoulRift, I hope you reconsider your position on this situation in the diner.

To my dear neighbors up north; you need to try harder it's -11F here, and I have 4" of new snow.  I will be loading my open hoppers and ore cars with this white stuff and send it north.

To our disgruntled patrons of the diner; I really hope you guys can work out your differences; I enjoy our chats with FoulRift and look forward to new patron's comments, suggestions, and ideas.

Ok, well I need to wander out in my mini-blizzard and remove some snow.

Good Morning.

I just had a little time to look over the various backgrounds of the diners as posted over the last couple of days or so. Wow! What great diversity. One of the many really good things about "The World's Greatest Hobby" is it does attract people from so many backgrounds and different ages. Looks like each person has plenty of things to feel good about outside our hobby. Fantastic.

Hmmm. .... Well..... I just reread my first paragraph......er....uh... I sounded a bit like Mr. Rogers..... It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood and all that stuff......... sorry about that.... oh well..... clang, clang, the trolley is here...oh never mind.......

I've some more progress on the layout to report. As I've been saying, I'm adding an extension following about 25' of walls. This is a norrow part of the layout due to space limitations along the side. It's two levels with double trackage on each level and some side tracks. The benchwork is done, all of the lower level track is in place and about half of the upper level track is in place. This is a time consuming hobby for sure.

Happy Model Railroading.

Greetings from the Acela northbound at 130mph (actually we have slowed to a mere 101). As it turns out when we arrived the Acela was the next train out and a little whinging on my part got the CFO to spring for the upgrade (with all the advance birthday/Christmas/anniversary presents I have I'll need to live to at least 100).

And Terry, I load the photos one at a time by hand simply changing the digits for the shot after I upload.

This is cool as I also get to test the Sprint Mobile Broadband on the laptop also. Seems much faster than theother mobile I tried lasst year and has worked everywhere so far save for Yosemite Park.  Catch ya laters,  J.R.

Good morning, All.  I am going to slide into this back booth for coffee and a cinnamon roll.  I will take that sticky one with the heavy frosting.

 Sipping Tea

Johnboy,  Our goal is to put interest.  We saw a scene similar to that in one of our coffee table books, and the idea was born.

Rob,  As kids, when the trains would go by, we would run our horses to the track to wave at the engineers.  We were too naive to imagine our horses bolting from the noise.  Somehow we survived.

Lee,  Glad your GF got a chuckle.  Not just the bathers, but the loose horse running off with a pair of pants.  I had a horse that would do things like that, so I didn't have to make that up.Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]

Garry,  Yeah, for progress.  I must have missed that you were getting 25'.  You should be able to do a lot with that.

Later,  Sue

Good morning everyone, a balmy 19.5F (-7C) here presently, however, the temp readout is dropping as we approach noontime, the opposite of what is supposed to happen. The cod wave has arrived on brisk NW winds, straight from the Arctic via Canada plains.

I have some photos to post at the end of this post, some of the railfan trip up in NH a couple of weeks ago, and the few of the swing gate for the layout. After considerable planning, and few trial and errors, in concert with some excellent advice from Der, Mike, Paul , Ryan and Mike, I decided to go with the swing gate. Lift out was an issue because I really didn't have a good area to store it, secondly, it is not the most convenient way to enter for sure. The lift up and drop down gates all had their own issue for me. I also had a different match-up to consider, I had a need for an "L" gate. The photos will show this much better than an explanation.

NJ BOB: On the contrary, let me welcome "you" Sign - Welcome [#welcome]. I have been away from the Diner quite a bit over the last two months or so, very busy, but I wave as I walk by near track 2 outside. BTW, I hope you decide to stay, life is far too short to get your hair up over bumps in the track, let go of discontent and move on......now go have a dinner on my tab, Cloe, anything for Bob!

FRANK: Let me welcome you to the Diner also,  Sign - Welcome [#welcome] and I hope you and Bob can get the derailment fixed soon. Go have dinner on me also, and there is are two pieces of pie left for you and Bob if RT hasn't eating them with Fergie.

CAPE JIM: Thank you for informing the new members of the Diner that I am reall y an OF from years back when this place was called the Coffee Shop. Gee time flies!!!!

TERRY: Hey, another January birthday!!! Happy Birthday young man!!!Happy B-Day [bday] ,I too have a Birthday arriving on the 26th....my last year in the decade of the '60's age bracket.

CN CHARLIE: I thought that Canadians living that far north didn't get colds, it is already cold that close to the arctic circle??? LOL  Are you eating Ryan's special winter recipe Chicken Soup? And drinking plenty of Ed's OJ???  I sure hope so. Hope your feeling better soon.

I see that we are posting our resume's on the Diner BB, so let me join the fun, although I don't think I will get an job offers as I approach 69, but who knows, maybe I can pass out smily faces at Wal-Mart....LOL

Born ( 1939) and raised about 1/2 mile from where we live right now, Cherry Valley, Ma , the east section of the town of Leicester named after  the Earl of Leicester, England, who granted the land to the first settlers. Married my teenage sweetheart who lived 1 mile up the road but didn't notice her until I was 17. We have been married 47 years (1960), have three boys and one girl, and 9 grandchildren. Spend 3 years in the Army at Nike Missile sites, which got me to White Sands and also El Paso several times as well as Mexico. Worked at Raytheon, Sprague Electric ( the former capacitor mfgr.) Hybrid Systems, Digital Equipment Corp., and lastly Intel ( ya, the microprocessor in your PC ). Retired in 2000.

MRR career began in 1948 with my first Lionel train set......then cars, girls, army, family life took over until I retired. Now I am trying to get tracks laid on my first HO layout which will be the era of 1920 to 1960's in Northern New England. Layout size is in 10.5' X 18' room.

This is Canadian National 7470, 0-6-0, crossing the Ellis River bridge, Glenn, New Hampshire under full steam.

The "L" shaped swing bridge. This will hold a double track, maybe three.

Three exterior type door hinges were used due to size and weight of the swing gate. I didn't want "any" drift in alignment when tracks meet at each end of the gate.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Well, we're finally up and at 'em.  Sundays are our days for sleeping in late.  Zzz [zzz]  But the coffee is good and hot.  Fran has the bacon frying.  And I'm about to start the pot of chili Chef [C=:-)]  to have it ready for game time.  Probably in the mid 50's (+/- 13ºC) right now, so definitely sweater time.

FoulRift: ...if Frank/da_kraut is staying then I'm leaving.  Not only the diner but the forum as a whole...
Wow, Bob, that's quite the extreme reaction.  Sorry you feel the need to take that stance.  But you gotta do what you gotta do.

da_Kraut:  Thank you egmurphy for the formal invitation.  It is never my intention to offend anybody and would like to apologize to anybody that has taken offense to my screen name or anything that has been posted.
Please, Frank, it's Ed.  The egmurphy was something carried over from work where I used to sign docs E.G.Murphy.  If I had know when I joined the forum just how stilted it would sound a few years later I might have wound up with a username like da_Newfie.  Ontario, eh?  You'll feel right at home here with the rest of the northern contingent.

Sue:  I am not sure if you can see, but the water actually flows across the track in the back.  I will probably make the water deeper...
Doesn't that bother the train crews?  Seems like it would have been better to run it under the tracks in a culvert.......  Laugh [(-D]

J.R. - glad to hear that your train sighseeing went well in Philly.  And glad that you caught the Acela back home.  One day I'd like to get back up there and ride it also.

Garry:  Hmmm. .... Well..... I just reread my first paragraph......er....uh... I sounded a bit like Mr. Rogers..... It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood and all that stuff.........
Actually, we try to maintain it that way here.

Terry:  OK, what am I doing wrong or not doing? I wanted to post some pics, but can only do one at a timeHow do you guys post multiple pictures?
I don't know what the others do, but I do it the old fashioned way.  I type in [im g] (without the space), then paste the address of the photo, starting with the http://, then close by typing [/im g].  I usually use at least one ‘return' (or line break) before including the next photo just to provide some space between the photos.

Breakfast beckons.  Dinner [dinner]

Later,

Ed

Same method I use. I've never had a problem with it.

Ed,

This line is semi-abandoned. It is only used seasonally by the ranch when cattle are sent to market. Due to lack of use, it is not worth the upgrade.  We saw a logging photo the tracks went standing water.  That would never pass permitting now.

We are having fun with this.

Jeff:  Glad to see you are up and around this morning. By the way how is the foot coming along ??   If you can dance on it you can have the second dance with Dianne. I get the first, I think she promised me, but I lost the note.Blush [:I]

CN Charlie.   Hope you are winning with the cold.. Being from Winnipeg I thought you would be heavy into the odorless garlic,  that would keep you healthy....Shock [:O]  Open wide !!!

Fergie:   Wouldn't you rather get a dryland job ? Maybe as a trail groomer at a ski resort. Your feet wouldn't get so wet...............I just can't envision having to go to work out in the ocean with 40 to 50 mph. winds. I have trouble with that kind of wind here in the prairies.  But that is just a flatlandersMy 2 cents [2c] worth.

Well it is starting to get busy here as we have a JAZZ concert in the museum today, so I had better sit up and pay attention to all those coming and going.Cool [8D]

Foots doing just fine. Thanks for asking. I'm just changing the dressing daily and keeping it clean. Maybe it'll actually heal up one of these days. I'm not holding my breath.

Well I just got some good news; my transfer orders arrived and I'm staying local, all I have to do is change parking spots in June.

Greyfox, great pictures!  I hope the swing gate lines up for you. Did you see the "how-to" file on swinging gates posted in MR?  They had a great idea about how to cut the track on an angle to meet the swing of the gate.

LEE:  I don't have the need to cut the track on an angle because of the design of the gate. The tracks that meet on the left side as you see the photo, will meet square on, and the tracks that leave on the far right side swing away cleanly.

JOHNBOY: We know all too well how cold it is up where you live in Saskatchawan, we see the weather forecast every day showing "where" the cold air is, and where it is going, like -18F in Churchill on Hudson Bay, and Yellow Knife, etc. It takes about two to three days to drain south over the Berkshire from your turf.

Now the important stuff ( at least today), here in New England, you "know" who we are all routing for over the San Diego Chargers.......as for the 2nd game, I would have to give the edge to Green Bay Packers, they are tough to beat at home, especially in bitter cold and snow. The Giants certainly know how to play in cold and snow however. I look for a tough fought game. Turnovers may decide this game.

 refill, please & thank you.

Saved a goat that had fallen though the ice layer on one of the drinking tubs, becoming trapped. Have no idea how long he was caught in there. Dried him off with a towel and in a short while he was able to stand again. Tonight will be another one in the teens, so hopefully he will be OK. So far, three baby goats have survived winter births this past week. Two did not. It's a tough time of year for them.

Hey, NE...Undefeated...WOW. Have no ties to NE, but I have enjoyed watching them play.

Well, sun is setting and I have evening rounds to do. Gotta run.... Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Good evening all

Finally got some time to stop in and say hello!Smile [:)]

Been reading all the posts and news but have just not had the time to type. We have been on the road a lot lately. My 15yr old daughter is race walking so my weekends have been spent at track meets and such. LAst weekend we were in Dartmouth for the DArtmouth relays. She did all right but came down with pretty severe case of shin splints. This weekend she went with her coach to Boston for some races. She did not walk but she was able to officiate and keep time for some friends. One of them is an Olympic hopeful for the race walk event.

RR wise been building structures working on the Delany Foundry. Have not done anything on a layout yet but plan on working on it this week. Sue I really love that picture and scene of yours great job. Jeff glad to see your foot is doing better. Paul sorry to hear of your friends troubles. (Sorry any word used does not adequetly describe the situation.) PC glad to hear your wife is doing so well. Ryan how is the roundhouse coming along. Lee glad to hear your only have to change parking spots, my 16 yr old son is considering going into the Coast Guard.

To all our Northern friends please keep that cold up there. The weather guru says it is supposed to be -12 deg F when I get out of work in the morning so please give us a break share something else.

Take care and prays for anyone in need that I missed.

Kevin, If your son has any questions about the USCG he is more than welcome to ask. He has to have a good resume to join; our recruiter's minimum quota is 1 active duty member a month so it's a bit harder to get in than most branches.  Since he is 16 I would recommend looking into the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, it will help on the resume and (providing they still have the program when he is 18) you get advanced 1 pay grade higher upon completion of boot camp then the rest of your peers.  Also if you want was can shoot a few email back and forth outside the diner.

Greyfox, I'm sitting on the edge of my seat to see more pictures of the swing gate in operation.  I've experimented with a couple of them and never had really good results.

Well the old diner was closed at 414 pages, I see we are up to 107 already and it's not even February, hard to believe we are that popular.

We're not that popular Lee, just talkativeSmile [:)]. Got back from Philly allright and I've been doing chores in the mean time catching glimpses of the New England game and the Giants/Packers first half. Both teams look impressive so far.

Not sure what happened to the camera this time but can't seem to coax the trip photos out of it - hope they didn't get erased again. Did get some pics of some other heavy objects when we walked to the river yesterday.

Didn't think anything from the Dewey era still existed. Well the games back on,  CUL,  J.R.

And if I'm not mistaken, that was the second in the series.  The original Coffee Shop thread ran even longer.  Again, I think this started back in April 2004.

Yup, thought so.  The original Coffee Shop thread began on April 29, 2004, and ran a total of 1,353 pages before it was shut down (they asked us to restart in a new thread).  27,058 posts.  Final post was on Jan 1st, 2007.  20 months!

Here's a link to the original thread:

Evening Gang: We went in to the hospital and saw Lara. She was all bundled up in a blanket with the isolet open. She was awake and looking all around. As we talked to her she looked at us which she hasn't done before. She is sure a keeper.

I'm sorry I wasn't better company last night it had been a rough day. I got a call this morning from a guy who said he was with the railroad and needed to talk to us about getting access across our land to the right of way. When I was over at my neighbors talking to him about it here comes some guys laying cable for a sismec survey. We went out and asked them what they were doing and tole them that we owned the land that the right of way is on and the the UP only has an easement and that they did not have permission to be there. They took up the lines and left. We talked to there boss and he said that he had been told that they had permission but that the permit man would be in touch. Turns out that the guy that had called earlier was the permit man. They now have as much chance of getting our permission as a snow ball in a blast furnace. Everyone wants a piece of us. I had to get that rant out. At least I did get to do some train watching. Two UP freights went by while we were talking to the survey guys.

Welcome Frank. Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Have a cold one or hot one on me.

Well I see that Daisy the dog has hit the sack so I think that I'll do the same.

Good Night All

Not sure what happened to the camera this time but can't seem to coax the trip photos out of it - hope they didn't get erased again. Did get some pics of some other heavy objects when we walked to the river yesterday.

Man you were playing with my head at firsat I thought it was the Wisconsin but then remembered shes the 64 not 62 (62 was my first ship U.S.S. Independence CV-62 not  BB)

Heres the Wisconsin BB-64 in action in the persian Gulf I believe. (while I was on her)

Evening folks-just coffee as usual.

Haven't been here in awhile, as the last few weeks have been a little goofy. My Mom has been back in the hospital again as she starting having trouble breathing after a cold a week or so ago. From what I understand she was diagnosed with COPD. (we're not sure what that is exactly, but it's supposed to be a step below pneumonia) She's doing ok now, just tired & weak from it-they're going to put her in the skilled nursing unit tentatively tomorrow to get her strength back up.

I finally got a model done after a hiatus of 3/4 of a year-you may have seen it on WPF. My plans are to get the next one done (hopefully) by the end of next month, but don't lay any $$ down on that prediction!

Anyways, everything else is going ok, just cold. 9 degrees here as I write this. Looking back, it seems we get our coldest weather here (as a rule) the last week or so of Jan. Let's hope this is it & temps will be more moderate in February (we'll probably get dumped on by snow though as we haven't gotten it too bad...yet.)

Well, I better git-gonna work on a few other things before bed-nite all!

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Beautiful, if rather chilly, evening here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Made even more beautiful by the Giants win over the Packers (sorry Terry).  Great defensive effort by the Giants.  Probably not Favre's best outing.  I do hope he returns for another season.  But right now I'm looking forward to the Giants vs Dick's Patriots in two weeks.

Johnboy:  Ed, are you making enough CHILI to have it served up in the diner.  As long as you keep the jalapenas out of it I'll have a couple of bowls.
Sorry there, there were definitely jalapeños in that chili, and lots of chili powder too.  I don't make it so hot that you can't eat it, but we do like things on the spicy side in this house.  By the way, it was pretty good, if I do say so myself.

Congrats on staying put, Lee.  There was a time in my career when I really enjoyed the moving every year or two.  But as I got older it got to be less and less enjoyable.

Going to call it an early evening.  We have something to do early tomorrow morning, so that means getting up a lot earlier than normal.  I'll try to make up for that with two naps tomorrow.

Hasta mañana

Ed

Evening, Janie - I'd like a bowl of chili (without the jalapeños), please, and a hot cocoa.

Thanks!

JIM CG, just kidding [wondered if anyone would notice] I just wish that was the real forecast. We had light snow over night and when I got up at 4, it was +5, at 6 it was +2 with a NNW wind under clear skies. It did get up to 12 this afternoon and the wind had laid some. Low for tomorrow morning is suppose to be -4, and a wind chill -20. We'll have the faucets dripping tonight.

Well, Inch, I guess I'll stop packing and loading my car. Oops [oops] At least we have company in our mutual misery (NTBCW how some pronounce my state's name of Missouri).Wink [;)]

Dick, excellent photo of that loco coming in through the snow! Thumbs Up [tup] And glad to put in a plug for the OF's - I think according to someone's listing, I may be in that group, even though I haven't reached the exalted order of ORF's (yet). Wink [;)]

CN Charlie - I'd stay out of those 'warm' breezes up your way until you get over that cold. Thanks for dropping the clippers' temp a few degrees. Now, could you warm them up another 5 or 10 degrees? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Hey, Johnboy - you know that if Ed leaves the jalapeños in his chili, you can keep your sinuses cleaned out, right? Laugh [(-D] Wow, -18 Fahrenheit? No wonder bears hibernate!

It's currently 17 F (-8 C) and mercifully, there's no wind for wind chill to make it worse. Supposed to drop to 9 F (-13 C) tonight, but 'warm up' to 10 F by getting up time in the morning.

Didn't get any significant MRR'ing done today, unless you count some rearranging of conifer trees (and finding a tree base that got dropped a couple of weeks ago) on my layout. (I'm temporarily using the bases until I get the ground scenery mostly done to insert/glue the trees into the 'ground'). Also this afternoon, I was online, checking some scenery materials I want to order next. That, and updating my Quicken file with some MRR purchases I made yesterday.

Good to read the various bio/other info you all have been posting. Oh, Garry, don't worry about sounding like MisterRogers. Having watched several of his shows as my daughter was growing up, I enjoyed them. Besides, he was a MRRer - remember the trolley? Thumbs Up [tup]

Better get back to my chili for now.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Whistling [:-^]

Good evening Gang,

Chloe, I'll be in the corner and catching up with old Cannondale, Haven't seen him in awhile. Bring us both a cinnamon bagel and hot chocolates, Please & Thanks.

Well, you have to give it to them, the Giants played a great game, but I sure was cheering for the Packers. Oh Well, this is "Next Year Country"  for all my favorite teams, Packers, Seahawks,Chargers,Redskins and Bengals.

Have just about got those two tunnel liners completed and I think they are going to look pretty great. Will try and figure out how to post some pictures when I get it completed.  Once I get them down to my satisfaction I'll have a number more to do but they arn't so urgent.   Also I received in the mail off of ebay on Friday a beautiful Western Pacific Express Reefer. It is a Walthers RTR, and it looks terrific. With postage from Florida I paid only 2/3 of what it is worth up here.

Sorry Ed, I had to pass on the chili,  can't handle the Jalapenos, "Old man stomach syndrome". But thanks for the OJ popcicisles.

Have to call it quits for tonight, have to be up at 6:00 am, so I'm not going to get all my beauty sleep that I need. (that would take all day)

Welcome back all those friends that have been away for awhile, it is good to have you back where you belong.

Chloe,  Drinks of their choice all around and put it on Vinnie's tab  LOL.

Johnboy out.......................
