Just got home from the Valley Forge high School Train Show:

Dorothy gave me $40 if I let her stay at home (she does go to the large train shows with me, but passes on the little shows); I wound up spending $41 on: 5 ore cars (UP, Chicago & Northwestern, (3) LS&I), 20 pounds of light gray ballast, 5 pounds black ballast, and a field stone church with stained glass windows.

That puts me at 25 ore cars.  The ballast is the recycled rubber ground to #1 limestone size for about $1.25/pound.

Foulrift, if it's not pre 1959 it's gotta go.  I'm hanging onto some of the cars from when I was a kid for display, but the LS&W layout is steam and limited first generation diesel; that means the AMTRAK needs to go.  I'll get you a picture of the passenger cars.

Good afternoon everyone, been real busy....so I haven't been in the Diner for over a week or so......too bad because I missed FERGIE's birthday party...shuck, I heard it was a near riot!!

We have been busy shoveling out from one snowstorm after another, I got so tired of pulling the starter rope on the snowblower, that installed the electric start. Now if I can get the robo unit to work, all I will need to do is remote start it from the house, remote open the door, and guide the snowblower around from the comfort of the house using the RF controller and my new heavy duty decoder installed on the snowblower....WHAT ..WHAT...???? You guys haven't heard of DCC for snowblowers yet????

FERGIE: A belated Happy Birthday to you lad , 46 is it? Happy B-Day [bday] and the photos of your layout  with orange cabooses look great Fergie, nice job. Four more years and you make the 1st level OF's club.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] To all the newcomers to the Diner, have a hot cider on me.

SOUTHERNERS: 2" of snow in Atlanta? Snow in Louisianna?? Alabama?? Do you guys need any shovels? I hear that DUKE is offering courses on "driving in snow", is that correct Duke ?

I have some photos of the railfan trip to NH two weeks ago, in fact some of you guys have them already in reg email. I have loaded on PC, just need to upload to Webshots and get them into the Diner. Really great time in the deep snow on the mountains with the 0-6-0 Canadian National switcher.

Time to run, see you guys later,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! We had snow here this morning! About a 1/4 inch of it. Of course as soon as dawn broke it melted. I hope we don't get anymore of it.

This morning I replaced the decals on KCS 132. The old ones were in rather sad shape.

Ryan,

How come no entries from the CZ on the menu,  I've been waiting a long time.  But you have been doing a great job with it anyway.    Keep it up, we appreciate it.

Johnboy out........................

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is the CZ? I'm guessing Canadian _______

Heading towards St John's for refit and we should be in before the Nor'Easter arrives late tomorrow. Another bumpy trip as we had 40 knot winds on the beam all the way over Dead [xx(] Can't say I slept to well as the ship had a constant 10 degree heel on her. [xx9][xx9]

HI,

While reading the responses in the Diner I ran across this:

"Before I went to work today I just happened to poke my nose in the other room and there are two wack jobs there with the screen names of Rommel and da_kraut.Personally I find those names offensive and happen to mention it to one of our pt moderators and the response I got was a sudo history lesson and not much else."

I really do not appreciate being called a WACK JOB just because of my screen name.  My backgound is german and sometimes I have been called ***.  It is a nickname used here in this part of the country at times.  It is not offensive for me in any sense nor should it be for anybody else.  Lets not forget that your own signature has "Follow the reaper" with a picture of the reaper itself.  So is this a case of the kettle calling the pot black??

Frank

PS I also do not plan on going away any time soon.

Afternoon, Zoe - you traded shifts with Janie, huh? Oh, yeah - since Ryan's buying Big Smile [:D], I'll have the Oysters in Cream Stew, and the Pullman Double Chops Hot Plate, plus a cup of coffee. Heck, get me another hot plate for warming my hand, please...Shock [:O] That wind's got some bite to it today - the good thing is, the sun's out. Bad news is, it's going down now. Hate to see how cold it'll be after the dinner party that I'm going to tonight (at my buddy Mark's place). Brrrr!!

Uh, Dick, you should try to stop by the Diner more often. Looks like the newer Diners think you're a newbie here. Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]

NJ Bob, actually, I'm pretty sure Dick was in the Coffee Shop (back before versions 1 & 2 of ETD) before I started coming by. Easy mistake to make, though. Wink [;)]

Johnboy, ANG is an abbreviation down SOTB (the Northern one, that is) for Air National Guard (sort of similar to Air Force Reserve). They have an ANG unit at the St. Louis airport north of me (couple/three hours drive by car). When I was in Air Explorers (which is like Boy Scouts with specialties, for guys a little older than maximum Boy Scout age), we met in their building there one evening a week - even met in the pilots' briefing room, and once got to go up the stairs to the control tower for the airport. As you can guess, this was many, many moons ago... At that time, they were flying F-100 Super Sabre jets, though I think now they have F-15 Eagles.

Went by the LHS today and picked up an SP AAR triple hopper (Accurail kit), and at Hobby Lobby I picked up the WS Landscaping Details kit (coupon for 25 percent off), and a 1950-something black Cadillac convertible. (And no, I'm not going to paint it pink!Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg])

Got to get going on my hot plate - and leave room for the dinner at Mark's. He's having baked catfish, and each of us is bringing a side dish. I'm taking a French cheescake with fruit topping (looks like either cherries or strawberries and icing or whipped cream on top). Dinner [dinner]

Blessings and a warm place for your night (and your dogs'),

Happy B-Day [bday] to our birthday boy!  that was a fine cake they made for you!  So this is your 20th anniversary of your 30th birthday right?

Terry, No I said the sales men, bible readers and JW's would throw milk bones to her so they could ring the door bell, not eat them, LOL.

FoulRift, I'm HO scale and a swap would be cool.  If you look through my www button on the bottom of my post and look at my RIP track, that's the stuff up for swap.  The Amtrak passenger cars I have are the commuter version, with interior lights (track powered) I have three 10" passenger cars and one baggage car.  Why don't I run them?  Well I have 2 full sets of B&O capitol limited heavy weight sets, 1 set of NYC heavy weights, and another heavy weight set that I'll be lettering for the L.S.&W.  Send me a normal email address and I'll send you the pictures, my email is just below my name.

Evening, I'll just have coffee for now Cleo, Mother fixed me some fried catfish n tater tots for supper n I'm still full

JOHNBOY, I see JIM beat to the answer and he's right.

NJ BOB,, I remember those winter camps many years ago and really enjoyed them. Today I like staying in where it's warm.

LEE, you made a pretty good haul for $41.. The show prices here have been kinda high the last couple years.

JERRY,, found out the show in Mattoon is Feb 16-17. I'm hoping to have some money put back so we can go.

JIM CG, just kidding [wondered if anyone would notice] I just wish that was the real forecast. We had light snow over night and when I got up at 4, it was +5, at 6 it was +2 with a NNW wind under clear skies. It did get up to 12 this afternoon and the wind had laid some. Low for tomorrow morning is suppose to be -4, and a wind chill -20. We'll have the faucets dripping tonight.

Best get back to play time while I can, ya'll have a good night.

Good evening, All.  If Ryan is buying and preparing, I will be the first to get my order in.Laugh [(-D]

Today has been rainy, so after a trip to town for groceries, I did the ground goup in the river bottom.  When that dries, I will do touch up on the river bank.  My next project will be to paint the cowboys at the stock pen.  Details.  Details.

Happy Birthday, Terry.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Cold front blew in this morning and it's sweater time.  Okay, so it's a cool front, not cold.  I'm still happy.

Terry:  Yup. it's my b-day. Even received my official greeting from AARP.  Maybe I'll use the card to spread PL300 for roadbed!
I joined AARP a few years ago, when I retired.  I find the AARP discount at some of the hotel chains more than compensates me for the cost of the yearly membership.  And have an official Happy Birthday from me then.  Happy B-Day [bday]

Lee - 25 pounds of ballast?  Wow, that's some ballasting job you have ahead of you.  I think it will take around a half pound to ballast my layout, if I apply it liberally.  Laugh [(-D]

Frank / da_Kraut - Welcome to the Coffee Shop / Diner.  Sorry that your first post here had to be under such unfortunate circumstances.  We normally try to maintain things pretty civil here.  But now that you've broken the ice and dropped in, why not tell us something about your layout and drop back in on a regular basis.

While we're waiting for Dick to get his railfan photos uploaded to a hosting site, here's just one sample of what's in store.  This is one of his shots that I uploaded to my album in Rail Images.  This one was selected as one of the "Railfan images of the week" on TrainBoard.  Great photo by Dick.

Think that's about from down here this evening.

I'll catch up with all of you tomorrow.

Lee-sorry but have to put deal on back burner.

To all in the diner-thanks for the good times and good remarks on my pics but  if Frank/da_kraut is staying then I'm leaving. Not only the diner but the forum as a whole. I don't need his attitude or CRAP!!

Not one person objected to my reaper as a logo or signature except him but that's tough. It's mine not his. It's my own brand of humor and if he doen't like it-"STICK IT"

Sorry it has to be this way,but that's me.Thanks again  NJ Bob

Good Evening Diners:

Terry:

Frank / da_Kraut  ...reminds me of a restaurant in Edmonton "The Happy Honky"  The city fathers made the Ukrainian owner change the name, since it wasn't politically correct. This despite the fact that he, the Ukrainian, had named it as a joke aimed at himself! Go figure.

FoulRift:

Der-Can I have my reaper back please?
...Sure thing, it's in here.   Does this mean I have to delete it from my file?Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Not much mrr today as it was all taken up in fixing our daughter's bathroom fan.  Glad that's over. Fault was in the unit. No spacers installed at the factory Banged Head [banghead], so fan was too low and pressing on casing. Fixed with a couple of washers. (I didn't come up with that, as all this was discovered and done during the week by the couple who rent the basement.Thumbs Up [tup] ) However, I still had to finish the wiring properly, bringing it somewhere near code!  Glad it's done now.

While in civilization, I got some Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish for the GLEAM final stage.  I figure that those sanding stick sandpaper strips turned inside out will do fine as applicators. They are cloth backed, and should do pretty well as the cork roadbed does. (I haven't any of that, as this layout is AMI)

Resumé time: (and Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Ed's appreciation of those who have posted so far.)

Born in England at the very end of the first year of WWII.  Raised in the south of England, where I met and married Kris (1965, but took 4 years to get around to that!)  Trained as a Food Technologist, and worked in the north and northeast.  Emigrated to Canada in 1967, Toronto. Ontario.  Daughter born 1968. Stuck the big city for 3 years, and left it and the food industry for rural life and a Landscaping business.  Complete change of plans followed, training for ordination and pastoral ministry.  Pastored in Ontario, B.C., Alberta until health / stress caused earlier-than-planned retirement in 1997.  Came to Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia in 1998, love it.

That's bio, now the trains:

1st. set was a present to my elder brother when I was six. Hornby OO clockwork. (steam of course, and we used the track more as point to point than a loop, as I recall)

At High School (there's not really a North American equivalent, but let's call it that.) a teacher was into scratch building steam OO locos, and hand-laying brass track in a large Hobby Hut (old wartime Nissan Hut) on the campus. Got heavily infected with the MRR virus there.

All that lay dormant until our daughter asked for a train set one Christmas.  Her wish was granted (Surprise!), but I unfortunately stole it in setting up the 4x8 HO layout by making it too complicated with switches both track and electrical.. Fine for me, not so fine for her. Blush [:I]

First major layout in B.C. based on the BCR in HO, about 14' x10'. ( A mountain theme) Next was the Athabasca and Western (a Prairie and Foothills theme), a freelance HO in two rooms of a basement designed for it in a house we built mainly because Kris got a terrific job.

Latest is in N scale. Change due to limited space here in our Nova Scotia home, where one guest bedroom is Kris' office (She writes, does crafts, etc.) and the other is my train room and office.  The Maritime Trunk ("Service is an MT promise".) is a fictional modern road that leases its equipment and over which CN has trackage rights. It's meant to catch the flavour of East Coast Canada railroads.

That's it for now, I'm off to try that polish.

all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Good evening,

Thank you egmurphy for the formal invitation.  It is appreciated.  It is never my intention to offend anybody and would like to apologize to anybody that has taken offense to my screen name or anything that has been posted.

The current layout is under construction.  It is to be a model of the Canadian Pacific from 1995 to 2000.  The layout is a shelf type layout that is around the wall above the door jam height.  Space is at a premium and there seems to be a lot of it available at that height.

It is a pleasure being on this forum and being able to learn so much from such great experts in such diverse topics.

I wish everybody a good night.

der,

Thanks for the great resume.  Most of us don't have such an exciting life history.

Our train rooms keep us out of trouble.  And yours does keep you busy.  We thought about N scale, but I would always need magnefication.  It is always fun to watch your progress.

Did you dry any bushes for trees this fall?  Mine are out in the wood shed.  Last year I brought a bunch of bugs in while they dried.  It was a mess.

Foul Rift, I sent you an email earlier.

GMT, I replied to your email, thanks.

ED, I bought fine rubber ballast, I like how it lays down when glued in the conventional manner, but sometimes it takes more than one gluing.   I'm HO-scale so the yard will use most of it since the whole area will be gravel.

Paul, glad to hear the baby is doing better, it's tough news about your friend but I'm glad you're getting a chance to visit with him.

Sue, what do you plan to use for water?  I'm looking around at all the different "stuff" and not sure what will be the best.  I do know no more of the melt this in the pan and pour it on the layout stuff for me.  I thought solder burned skin until I tried that stuff, LOL.

This week will be tough, I'm off MLK day, work Tuesday, off Wednesday and Thursday, work Friday, then have Saturday and Sunday off.

Lee,  I am using Woodland Scenics' Realistic Water.  I like to finish with their Water Effects to give ripples to the surface.  I started on this project about a year ago. It will probably be a month or so before I get to this section of the water.

This is a little washed out.  I made ripples around the bathers, and streamed a trickle of a waterfall in the back corner.  I am not sure if you can see, but the water actually flows across the track in the back.  I will probably make the water deeper as I complete the riverbed.

Good Evening Gang,

Just stopped by for a cocoa before I bounce onto the pillow.

Golly Chloe, you sure look great tonight.   What has put the sparkel in your eyes??Kisses [:X]

Ryan,  Jeff has beat me to the reply.  The CZ,  is the California Zephyr, the pride and joy of the Western Pacific, DRG&W, and CB&Q.  The CZ runs on the Last Mountain & Eastern Div. here in the Great White North.

Sue, I love your work and humour. Thats great looking scenery.Wow!! [wow]

Well I thought we had been cold up here, but just watch the Packer fans and Giants fans and players tomorrow in Green Bay.  Nobody will be green,  they all will be BLUE, BLUE, BLUE.            I love football but I would rather watch that game in the comfort of my living room with the fridge and washroom near by.

Sorry to see NJBob pull out. We all have to learn to give and accept apologizes and carry on.Sigh [sigh]

Sorry for the rough start Frank, but you are welcome here and so is Foul Rift, hope he changes his mind.

Well some of you younger folk can stay up if you want, but this old phart has to get horizontal for a few hours. Back to work in the morning.

Sweet dreams, Blessings to all, be sure to keep your socks dry.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] from me! Those horses must spend plenty of time around trains not to spook at the metal smoking beasts as they chug by. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Look forward to seeing more pics of your wonderful layout scenes. Thumbs Up [tup]

I apparently missed a scuffle in the Diner. It is ashame to see someone leave over something said. Hope they will return.

 I guess it's a very early good morning as it's 12:30 a.m. here.

My sincere apology to all our southern neighbours but the weather really isn't my fault. It's all Johnboy's. He sends it to me and then it just roars by heading straight south. Remember that porous border? The windchill tonight is -45C but it will improve tomorrow to only -41! We do try to warm it a little as it zips past but only a little as we want to share.

Finally getting over a bad cold and will likely start work on my first effort of doing roads tomorrow. I have all that Woodland Scenic stuff to do it. I know there are less expensive alternatives but I don't have much to do.

My footwarmer(dog) has left for bed so I guess I should do the same or the road might not be too level tomorrow.

Good morning,

It's -11F outside this morning!

Sue, thanks for the info, my GF got a kick out of your "NEKKED" cowboys in the water.  I tried the "EZ" water for a small pond and found out it was not easy at all (the plastic beads you melt in a pan).

Still waiting for the lake to freeze over, it would really help stabilize our weather here on the north coast.

...LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM EST MONDAY... ... WIND CHILL ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON EST TODAY... A LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY FROM THE EAST SIDE OF CLEVELAND ACROSS THE SNOWBELT OF EXTREME NORTHEAST OHIO AND NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA. Good Morning All,

A regular and one of Bills' donuts please. Went out this morning and it was around 20F but no wind so no worries. Got some outside pics of the old Reading terminal shed before the streets filled up and the sun got too high. We'll see how they turn out. Couldn't get them to load on Photobucket so I'll try again when I get home. Looks like the snow has missed us as well so that's all good. Only problem this morning with the camera was panhandlers in pursuit when they saw the camera out (sure sign of a tourista).

Lee - I'll get that stuff shipped when I get home.

Frank - welcome to the diner. Did you formerly play basketball or are you planning on getting a tennis referees chair for ops? The idea of air rights at home is intriguing.

NJBob - sorry you and Frank got off on the wrong foot. Hope you stick around anyway.

Good to hear Lara is continuing to improve and grow.

Ended up joy riding on SEPTAs' Frankford/Market Street Line yesterday. Rode to both ends and got an idea of what it's like here outside of the city center and it wasn't pretty. They seem to have the corner on the abandoned housing and factory market here - even worse than NYC or even Waterbury,Ct. The new mayor sure has his work cut out for him. On the other hand if we ever get an economic policy that works there is lots of room for expansion. Well enough for the soapbox - time to see about Amtrak schedules home as the CFO winds up her lacrosse seminars early today. Might even get home in time for the game. I figure this might be as close as the Giants get to the superbowl this year since they haven't stumbled yet and they are not noted for being that consistant.  CUL,     J.R.
