11F right now and quarter to midnight and headed for single numbers maybe lower as the Dew Point is registering -7F, so the air temp could get that low with no wind to stir things up. Looks like a 2 dog night tonight guys and gals all across the country and certainly in Canada.

LEE: The double tracks will actually enter the gate as straight track, then immediately go into a curve across the gate to the left side before entering that table on the left side as straight track. If I plan it right, I should be able to have a 30" curve. The gate is all constructed of 2x4's and 3/4" plywood for strength to minimize any misalignment issues .

JIM: Don't rush to get into the ORF exalted order of MRR's, you will be there a looooong time! Enjoy your middle age.

ED: You got your wish, the Giants pulled it out in OT, Brett was not too sharp with his passes. I feel for the home crowd, it is so tough to lose at home, one game from the big one.

Brrr , time to throw another log on the fire..

Bon Soir mais amis,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !!    So in one weekend we loose the reaper, gain a *** (WELCOME!!) who doesn't fear the reaper, and post a bunch of pages!

I just want to I'm pulling for that Global Warming stuff. Where is it when you need it?

Kinda late to mention this, but good job on the diner COX! I would put stuff in bold type, but it's more trouble than it's worth for a quick post.

PaulB- Give your friend our best. Wish I could thnk of something better to say, but words just don't cover emotions sometimes.

GMT- Looks like New Jersey and Olympia, IIRC- Good shots, love them BB's especially Iowa Class. Pure power.

Ed- I'm all for that chili, dish me up an extra large bowl. The Tobasco is in my locker, let me go get it.

Took Runt to the vet on Fri, she has been coughing, long story short she has congestive heart failure. I told her that would probably what gets us both. Doc put her on pills, she is sleeping soundly just off to my left now. Hope to have her around another 40-50 years. Or so.

OK, it's freezing here, my fingers are icecubes, and I can't type anymore. I'm just going to step outside for a bit- I might be awhile.

How many of you know that quote?

Good morning from frozen, snow covered Euclid, OH.

Paul,  When I lived in South Texas I drove over a fault line all the time, didn't understand what it was until the seismic survey team was walking down my street with all that gear.  When does little Laura get to go home?

ED, I do remember Voss coming into the diner and telling us he was shutting it down and I asked him just who the heck he thought he was walking in here and saying that.  After he explained himself I was in the corner booth with coffee and humble pie. Yes, moving all the time is a pain, it's the only thing I don't like about the job, but after this tour I can't complain since it will be my fourth tour in the same house.

RT & GMT, every "big" ship gets really, really small after you live on it for 2 or more months.  Those BB's were pulled into service during the first Gulf war because we had all this wonderfully preserved ammunition for them, and they are very impressive to the enemy when you toss compact car sized shells at them from several miles away.

Mitch, you need to look up COPD when you get the chance it's more of a condition than a disease. Hey do you have a list of train shows down around you I just scanned the flyers I picked up from last weekend's show if you want a copy of them.

Packers; Well that was a great game I really wish GB had won, but they played a great game that kept me on the edge of my seat.

I must've not read that book or have seen that movie, Philnrunt - don't recall it. Sounds good for our weather, almost. Wink [;)] Hope Runt gets healed up before too long.

I will be back for the breakfast buffet, definitely!

Good moring Diners.....

First of all it's time to be serious. Mitch posted his Mom has COPD.  As Lee said, Mitch should look it up. I suggest he go to webmd.com and read about it. This is the disease that ended the life of my wife's sister in Spetember 2007. It can be an extemely nasty disease. Mitch should get the full story from the doctor about his Mom's condition.

I might add my two cents, too. COPD is commonly caused by smoking. My sister-in-law had been a smoker. I urge everyone to ask smokers they know to quit smoking. It's not just that they kill you; it's HOW they kill you. I watched my sister-in-law die over a period of 17 days in ICU. It was awful.

The chapel car has been spotted next to the diner. Let's pray for Mitch's Mom.

Back to the diner and to mrr'ing.

I enjoyed  Dick's photos very much.  Steam and snow. Nothing looks better.

Hopefully, Johnboy can get phtos of his tennel project posted soon. I'd like to see them.

Ryan ...... I like the menu selection, too. The original California Zephyr may have been the greatest train anytime anywhere. It's been called "The Silver Lady" by many.

I worked yesterday afternoon and evening on the layout. I am building "east" of my fictional town of "Blackhawk" and eventually reach my planned city of "Heartland".

Happy Model Railraoding.

I should have mentioned...... in addition to prayers for Mitch's Mom........ there should be continued prayers for Jeff to recover from foot surgery and also for Mrs. PC to recover from her surgery.

Back to the layout for me now.

Last time I was up that way (many years ago) I stopped in Massachusetts to look at the USS Massachusetts. I didn;t realize until that moment just how big that ship is!

Let me add to the non smoking because of my friend Jack.  He was only 68 when he died and it was from emphysema,so please think about it.

Good afternoon to all.....nver got over 19F here today, and with clear skies and no wind, the temp may well get below 0F tonight.

MITCH: Our prayers for your mom, " when two or more gather in prayer, there I am among you"....we may not be side by side physically, but members of this Diner sure are virtually.

Let me also add my comments to those who smoke or have friends and relatives who do: I watched 4 uncles and a 44 year old cousin all die of cancer caused by smoking. Another relative would not/could not give up smoking until the day she watched my uncle suffer and die in the hospital. She dropped her pack of cigarettes into the basket in the hospital room and never smoked again...that was 40 years ago. Think it can't be done? Think again !

JEFF: Our prayers for you my friend, we certainly pray for a quick and lasting recovery.

RYAN: I am very happy with the swing gate, your design really got me thinking in that direction, and it worked out very nicely. Thank you sir.Bow [bow]

Well, we have some homemade pea soup for supper, the leftover ham bone did a great job!!!Dinner [dinner]

Dinner [dinner]Boy that salmon was really good, very enjoyable.. and as usual the company is top notch what a great bunch of folks you all are here at the Diner. It is always a pleasure to be in your company.

I'll check in again in the morning, but right now its home for supper then more tunneling.

In the mean time, keep an eye out for Cape Jim and see who he has on his arm now that he has that new set of wheels.  They should be rolling in soon.  I think he is kind of sweet on Zoe.

in a Santa Fe mug, please & thank you!

I had to put down a nanny goat today that lost her kids before they were even born. We have no idea how long she had been in labor, but by the time we found her there was only one humane option. It's too dang cold.

Of all my plywood, none is both large enough & strait enough to cover the top of my train table. Plenty of strait OSB, but everyone nixed that option. I could always cut two sections from different plywood scrap sheets and combine them, but that would be less strong than one full section. Drats!

Evening.

Got's a sound question. Thought about dropping a sound decoder into an Athearn Rotary. (this is after we un-notch the sound decoder in another engine) But son of a gun, no one has sounds for a Rotary plow thart I can find. It sounds liek I could just go with a steam recording, so do I need more of a heavy steam, or medium, etc.

Evening Gang:

Rob I'm sorry to hear about the nanny. It's tough enough to loose the kids but the mother too is really tough.

Flashwave: See if you can find a Shay sound decorder. The steam rotarys were powered by Shay engines.

Not much going on here. I did get to the basement drawing board and get a couple more lines done on the plan for the Clark Gardens HO layout. I still have to get photos and dimensions on Jack's layout so I can talk to mister Clark about displaying it.

Time to help Mary Ann on the agriculture survey.

Well I have gotten my track done.   Now I am thinking I will expand it much more than I thought of.  After all I can get another 6 possibly 8 feet plus I can go to levels...   Hmmmmmm  I willmake a timber yard and sawmill.  But I may add more on.   Its amazing how much more you realize as you go on with creating the trains.

For now I will be driving to make some money for the morgagate.   Yes, I do concert lighting for a living.  But, it is slower during Dec and January.   So I drive.  I am a tractor trailer driver as well.  Now doing that I will be able to think about it for long times while I am driving all over N. America.

Thanks for the donuts, and the coffee.   It is always needed.   I will check this from time to time but no guarantees as to when I will post.

Good Evening Diners!

I agree with Johnboy, that salmon was terrific! Thanks Ryan. I must confess that I am very partial to salmon.

Dick(Grayfox), Thanks for the great photos! I have a PK2 CNR version of an 0-6-0 and I really enjoyed your photos. Please post more.

Thanks to all for your kind wishes and cure remedies for my cold and I can report that it is virtually gone. I think it was Ryan's Seafood Chowder. I didn't try Johnboy's cure as I grew up in south Winnipeg where garlic was a foreign substance but I have to say that I do enjoy it in foods now. That's in food Johnboy, not on its own as recommended.

For Lee , Jim and Dick, I am happy to report that it supposed to warm up here to 16F by Thursday so we are indeed turning off the tap on the cold air. Hang in there, just a week or so until it filters south!

Philnrunt, I was sorry to hear about runt. As a dog owner with 2 thirteen year olds, I can sympathize.

Well gang, I've asked Chloe to keep the hot coffee coming and it's on me, the least I can do considering the cold air! Or maybe it's all hot, you decide.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Warmed up a bit, and nice and sunny, but no so hot as to require the a/c turned on.  A great day.

Had to do something for the family today that wound up requiring a lot of waiting around.  Oh well, I had nothing really important to do.  And I brought a couple of magazines and a crossword puzzle book with me so I kept occupied while I waited.

Heard that John Stewart, a member of the old Kingston Trio, died today.  While he wasn't one of the three original members, he joined the group in 1961 and did have a long run with them.  They were my favorite musical group while I was growing up.  Dave Guard, one of the originals (the guy that John Stewart replaced) died back in 1991. Nick Reynolds, another original, is still alive, but retired. And I think that Bob Shane, the other original, had the rights to the group name and continued touring for a long time until he had a heart attack in 2004. I guess there's none of the originals left in the group that still goes by "The Kingston Trio".  I feel just a bit older tonight.  Sad [:(]

RC Jim:  I'd like a bowl of chili (without the jalapeños), please.
That photo looks a lot like my chili, except that I usually use 4 different beans (pinto, black, red kidney and either Navy or Great Northern) for the contrast.  Yeah, I know that Texas style chili doesn't have beans.  This is Mexican/Newfie chili.  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]
Northern Phil:  I'm all for that chili, dish me up an extra large bowl. The Tobasco is in my locker, let me go get it.
Feel free to spice it up as much as you want.  But it's pretty good as is.  Makes me sweat.  Sorry to hear the news about Runt.  Btw, I don't recognize the quote either....

Jerry:  Gonna work some today on turntable bridge..No hurry I don't have any place to put it anyway...
Ya know, I was wondering about that.  For a guy with a relatively small layout you keep pretty busy building kits, assembling buildings, adding rolling stock, etc.  I've been trying to figure out where you're stashing it all.  Wink [;)]

Rob - tough news about the nanny.  You've had a run of tough luck with the animals lately.  That seems like a full time occupation.

I think that's about it for now.  Catch up with you tomorrow.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

Evening folks-just my usual coffee in one of my "Eeyore" mugs.

Jim-got your PM-thanks for the info!

All-First off, Thanks a bunch for your thoughts & prayers for my Mom-that means a lot, & it only re-enforces the fact that GREAT people frequent the diner.  Wink [;)]

Latest update on Mom-she's been transferred over to the hospital closer to here & is in the Skilled Nursing unit where she'd been before in the past, & feels comfortable there. (they've kinda screwed with the local hospitals here-one is for "this" care, one is for "that" care, etc.-a lot of people around here don't care for it at all.) Anyways, the Skilled Nursing unit is for her to get her strength back up.

Things are a bit confusing now as to exactly what's afflicting her, & the reason is her regular doctor is on vacation. The diagnosises (SP?) have been varied from the different doctors she's seen-one felt COPD, her cardiologist did a heart cath & felt it was either a very minor heart attack or leaky heart valve. We'll have to see once he comes back.

Her health hasn't been well since a little over a year ago when her best bud passed away suddenly of cancer. Actually she's had a history of having health problems when someone close to her passes away-similar happened when her Mom passed away a little over 25 years ago. I have no idea on cause & effect.

The last year has been rough on her like I said-she's had 2 mini-strokes this time last year, carotid surgery in April, (& possibly again eventually on the other side) & all that on top of diabetes & asthma. She has a lot of frustration also that she can't do things like she used to do (Grange, Church, etc) & it forced her to retire from the library early last year at the age of 78 & 30 years there-you gotta give a gold medal for that! (she was a childrens' dept librarian-she did Story Time for several generations of kids here in town) & an aside, when she had one of her mini strokes last year, she recognized one of the EMTs that came to take her to the hospital as someone she had taught in her Sunday School class as a toddler!

A bit long winded tonite folks-apologies. She's resting now, & in a hospital & unit where she's comfortable & familar with, so that's good. I'll post updates when I can.

Once again, THANKS folks for your thoughts & prayers-it means a lot!!!! Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Good morning all,

I chatted with FoulRift, he will be coming back to the diner sometime soon.

I had a big problem with the train layout; my train room is 10' 4" by 25' 8". In the NW corner I have a closet that extend into the room and in the SE corner I had another closet that extended into the room.  I spent most of the day yesterday deleting the SE closet.  I'm planning on turning the storage room into the yard and the round house area leaving the large room for switching and mainline operations.

Prayers and best wishes to those with family members in the hospital or convelesing at home.

Good Morning All,

Not so bitter cold this morning, but snow is predicted for the afternoon. Finished sorting out parts and track for the afterschool program we start tomorrow. put a couple of hours in on the kitbashed Bralick Building that replaces one of the backround photos on the lower level.

Good to hear Mitches' mom is doing better - hope her regular doc shows up soon and figures out what's up for her.

I didn't realize farm animals had such a tough time of it in winter but when you think about it, our domestic pets go out and tromp around then whine to come right back inside to curl up (usually in our favorite chair).

Lots of w..k to do as usual so I'd better get to it - I'll catch y'al later,   J.R.

Morning , just some coffee for now Zoe, got kids here, so it's cornflakes for me later.

Not to bad here right now, we got a little snow here last night and temps at 31 for now, but it's going to drop later, and cold the rest the week.

I had a post started last night but lost it some how and don't have time to run back through now. You folks have sure been talkative last few days.

ROB, sorry to hear bout the goat, know it was a tough choice to make.

On the OSB, I'm use ½" OSB as a sub-base with some ¼" paneling [all stuff I had laying round] for the top on my layout now and no problems even after 8 years with bowing.

MITCH, sorry to hear of your moms health problems, COPD can be nasty to deal with. You can get it not just from smoking [which I did] but the environment also or so the doc's told me when I was diagnosed last year. Guess all those years of grain dust, farm chemicals, anhydrous and such caught up with me.

Needs to get going, bout time for the bus, Thoughts to all in need of them, maybe I can catch up with all the posts later, if the girls will let me
