Ryan-Thanks for the welcome. Yes-I would like some of that good looking PR if you please with a side of greens if you happen to have some. I haven't seen the Feb. MR as yet. Should be out here any day now. I subscribe to Trains and like it a lot but won't be re-newing it because it will cost a lot more than what I origionally got it for.

Anyway,I've been out of work for a week now because of the holidays and it's getting to be about that time to get ready so I'll see you all later. NJ Bob

It's currently 38 here. The low last night was 29. Today's high will be around 48 with a low tonight of 20. Gonna be a bit nippy.

Afternoon, all!

First visit to the Diner(and first time "foruming",if that's a word!)

Anyhow , two questions:

1. My puter screen says the last post here was at 7:37pm 1/2/08,TODAY. Seeing as it's 2:12pm 1/3/08up here in NW wisconsin,4 degs. above, am I missing something?

2. I've been perusing the forums past and curious about the Gleam method of cleaning track.Has any one here used it?

Thanks.

Terry, in Sarona,WI.(hence the name,my wife's idea!)

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the Diner and to the Forum Terry in Sarona!

Not sure what is going on with your clock, but maybe someone else can help you with that one! This post clocked in at Today, 3:28 PM. Maybe your computer clock is off!

Have some virtual Prime Rib on my tab today seein' as how it's your first post and first post in the diner too! Heck, guys, we should give Terry the extra special treatment and let him have some pie too....on the house!

Actually, the only rule here in the Diner is if you make the TOP (Top Of Page) post then the meals are on your virtual CC and Chole will keep the tab running too!

The Gleam method of cleaning track has been used by a few of us, I think Jeff has used it a lot! I just bought the CMX track cleaning car and it works great too, the gleam method works, but take a lot of time for a medium to large size layout. The CMX car does all the work for you!

Cheers,

Ryan

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the Diner, SaronaTerry! I'll let others answer your second question, as I've not used the Gleam stuff (but I think it's something you put on the rails...).

As for your first question, if it's the 3rd in Wisconsin, you might need to check your 'puter's clock - I'm still on Wednesday (the 2nd) here in Missouri... Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] The last post time thing probably would (depending on where you read it) be when the page started, or (if it was out on the main list of MR forum topics) it might just be a while since someone posted (which sometimes happens). Enjoy the forums (wear flame-retardant clothing on some topics 'out there'). We try to keep it friendly in the Diner here, and cover a variety of topics (except for not getting much into politics or religious matters - sometimes a surefire way to start a 'flame war' anywhere online). Our twin servers (virtual) are Zoe (usually covers days) and her twin Chloe (covers evenings), plus Janie and Flo (sometimes others) who help on the weekends. Give one of our servers your beverage and food order, and watch out for posting the first one on a page (AKA the "TOP", or Top Of Page) - usually, if you hit the TOP, you pay for the (virtual) beverages of the others posting on that page. Otherwise follows the pattern from the real life coffee shops or diners.

What's your layout like, by the way? Tell us about it and yourself. And how far north is Sarona? Are you getting snowed in like some parts of the upper Midwest (yet)? Wink [;)]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Welcome to the forum and the coffee shop (diner)!

You'd have to keep refreshing the screen to see new replies.  I think there's an Email option that will Email you whenever someone replies to this topic, but that will flood your Email and drive you nuts as this is a popular thread.  The easiest way to do it is to just save a link to the forum in your "favorites" (sometimes called "bookmark") and then you can access it quite easily.

On the time deal, go to "My Profile" in the upper right of this forum page and you can update your time zone so it reads right.  It sometimes has a little lag time before it corrects, so don't worry if it doesn't go to your settings right away.....it will.

As for Christmas, I made out good. My 'big' present from the g/f was a nice leather coat. Otehr than that, all she gave me was some small stuff (no complaints mind you!). Thumbs Up [tup]

Well gents, time go back to reading the Feb MRR and Trains issues.

Take care!

Now that is neat, I was in the restaurant biz for 18 years, that was my past career life, I am in IT now! Work as a chef for most of it, but ran the front and the back of the house for the last few years.

Ya, those onion rings are good with the tomato soup too!

Hmmmm, I don't know.......maybe you should look up Selector or tstage (They're on this list: http://www.trains.com/trccs/user/Members.aspx ) and PM (Private Message) them about it.  They're moderators and can help out.

And no such thing as a stupid question....'cept the one you should've asked!

BTW, most people around here just call me PC.  It's quick and easy! Wink [;)]

Evening Gang:

Welcome Terry. Sign - Welcome [#welcome]. I'm from Milwaukee originally. My aunt was from Rubicon and I used to spend sometime on her brothers farm there. That is one BIG layout. Tell us more.

I got the layout cleaned off enough to runn a couple of trains. I cleaned both mainlines and put the new Proto 1000 FM Erie built on the outside pulling the new Hiawatha cars. It ran very well. It did look alittle funny with a C&NW pulling Milw Rd cars. I put the Athern light 2-8-2 on the inside with 8 ore cars but had electrical problems on about half the line. I did manage to get it to run all the way around by running at a higher speed. I'm sure that I've got a corrision problem some where. I need to do a bunch of rewireing and solder rail joints. Anyway the trains ran and the no.2 GD was just rivited to the layout. She is grandpa's girl for sure.

The kids headed home this morning. We're going to miss them but they'll be back for good in June. In the mean time we have to get the house in order because they will be staying with us untill they can find a place. Right now we are going to get to bed early.

Good Night All

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

A real taste of "winter" as far as it goes down here SOB (South of the Border).  Only got up to 58º this afternoon.  Shock [:O]  Should be down in the 40's tonight.  Forecast is for it to be colder tomorrow.  I'm sure those of you shoveling snow have a lot of sympathy for me, right?

I suppose I should clarify that there are parts of Mexico that do get snow and below freezing temperatures, but they tend to be up in the higher mountain areas in Chihuahua.  But down here on the coast, tempered by the Gulf of Mexico, it never freezes or snows.

But with the cold, the strong hot coffee tastes extra good tonight.  And it's accompanied by fresh baked banana bread.  Fran does a great job on these, and today she outdid herself.  Of course, that doesn't help me with my New Year's resolution to lose weight.

No great strides to report on the layout front, but at least I kept the momentum alive by running some trains (seemed to run a bit smoother than yesterday) and starting to clear out the area around the layout.  Not much progress, but better than nothing.  Thumbs Up [tup]

Man, you guys were a chatty bunch today.  Two pages since last night.  Mustn't have been any Bowl Games on the telly.

NJ Bob - nice looking SW7.  btw, to answer your question out on the general forum, I uncouple (on the few occasions that I operate) with shish-ka-bob skewers.  To my way of thinking that's not any more realistic or unrealistic than using magnets for hands-off uncoupling.  Of course, I have a small layout.  So the little extra time to get in position and uncouple adds a bit of time to my short runs.

Cowboy [C):-)]  Rob:  ...if you count working on the table frame, then I started my layout "tonight". No legs or top on it yet, but did glue & screw the frame parts together. Hey, it's a start.
More than a start, it's a milestone.  Congrats.

PC - frozen radiator?  You're lucky you didn't crack the block.

JP - nice to hear from you again, even if it took being home sick to get you to visit.  Sounds like you're doing fine with the new gf.

Avenger - please, it's Ed.  Don't be so formal or I'll have to take to calling you Mr Avenger.

Ryan: I just sent in a subscription card for Trains magazine in the mail this week, any of you guys read that one?
Yup, get it, read it, and like it.  I also get Classic Trains (which only comes out quarterly), Model Railroader, and Railroad Model Craftsman.  But then again, being retired I have more time to waste than you.Take a look at Classic Trains sometime if you don't already know it.
How you keeping warm with those temps? I bet a hot pot of soup on the stove would help!
Actually, it gives me a reason to dig out some old sweaters and heavy shirts that I otherwise don't get a chance to wear.  Today's adventure in cooking was a quick stew made from the left over venison from Christmas dinner.  Chef [C=:-)]  Yeah, that hit the spot.

Jerry:  That must be something to see 30 plus pounds!
Yeah it is.  We have actually made larger ones, but found that they were just too difficult to handle into and out of the beehive oven, so we've cut the size down to something more manageable.

Terry - welcome to the Model Railroader Magazine forums, and the Trackside Diner thread.

PC:  Many of us are lone wolves outside of this virtual community.  It's nice to talk to others about our hobby.  It's not only a great social outlet, but we learn so much from each other!
Yes, forums can serve as substitutes for model railroad clubs for those of us who don't have easy access to them.  Lots of good information and lessons out in the regular forum.  This thread kind of serves as the part of the club meeting where you're chatting with the other "members" about stuff that may or may not directly involve trains.

That'll about do it for this evening.  Stay warm and I'll try to drop by again tomorrow, if I can fit it in between naps!  Laugh [(-D]

Hasta mañana,

Ed
