Yeah, it's true.  Things are getting back to normal though.

Guess your wife is much better. Hope she was able to enjoy the holidays. Really got'a watch taking those meds.

Yeah, she's doing much better.  Might be able to start trying to walk in a week or two.  I got her one of those daily meds containers that break it down by the hour, but until the other day she just wouldn't use it.  She said she didn't want to feel old.  Now she has decided that maybe feeling old beats the way she felt the other day!

So, you're not thinking of switching scales (from a forum post) are you? You have quite a good sized layout, even though you went to the "dark side", there's no going back as they say.

No, no, no!  It was an academic question.  I like my little trains! Wink [;)]

Lee and everyone-thatnks for the warm welcome.

As far as the name Foul Rift goes-here in West Central Jersey there is a road I pass fairly often called Foul Rift Road. It seemed unusual so I deceided to use it as a screen name. The reaper I found while looking for smiles.I liked it also so I then put the two together for the name of my railroad. And if that name isn't strange enough there is a road called Shades of Death Road. I kid you not-it's for real. So  much so that it has been written up in the papers not so much for the name but because the street has been stolen many times. Sorry for the history lesson but I thought you all might be interested.

Just got back from mother-in-laws. Had a nice dinner but now I'm ready for dessert. How about some coffee and a dish of chocolate ice cream? That would hit the spot. Then it's time to do a little work a HO structure I have in mind.BobDinner [dinner]

It's me again - just waiting for the paint to dry and thought I'd log back in. Foul Rift is an interesting road name sort of like Obtuse Rocks Rd in New Milford up the road fom us, but no match for some English road names none of which I can recall just now. What is the history behind the name Bob?

Turns out I had stashed away a HW New Haven diner in Black and Red and can now paint strip it and convert it to the early silver/gray with green window band used on the premier trains before the streamlined diners came on line. Now all I need is a way to make American Flyer coaches and I'm home free. Wish me luck - I'm still trying to figure out this airbrush thing.

Did finally get my lobby partition up and finished enough to go home. Still need to do the trims, door and baseboard paint (I hate painting wood, but the rest is already painted and I need to make it match. I even went so far as to have my house sandblasted  to get the paint off the cedar shakes but that is another story entirely.)   CUL, J.R.

CUL,J.R.-to be honest I don't know the history behind yhose names but you've inspired me to look into them.Another strange name I might have tried to use if I were still living in Ct would be The Devils Hopyard.Ever been there? Bob

Evening, Chloe - how about a hot fudge sundae

and a cup of hot cocoa for me, please?

Thanks! Oops [oops], looks like I'm covering dessert (and possibly breakfast as well). Chow down, folks!

DerJohn and Mitch, my belated Happy B-Day [bday] wishes for both of you. Hope it was great (sounded like it) for each of you and your honeys.

Currently in Cape Girardeau, we're at 23 F (-5 C) with a wind chill of 8 F (-13 C), wind gusts in the 18-20 mph range (30 kmph) (pretty breezy earlier today, too), and supposed to 16 F (-9 C) through the night. Shock [:O] But no snow [Yay!] - we've sent that to the north and east of us, so Inch, Jerry, Lee, PC and the rest of our Ohio Valley residents, better get ready for more white stuff - sheesh! And I hate to think of what kind of lake effect snow you'll be getting. At least, you might be able to share bragging rights with Fergie on the snow... Evil [}:)]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Congrats to LocoIndy76 and your wife on the new baby! Hope everyone is doing okay and resting up by now.

Good to see Lupo's dropped by - haven't seen you in a while, so feel free to come by again soon. We miss ya!

So Rob, sounds like you've been playing in the manure pile again, huh? Oops [oops]Wink [;)] About like the joke about the kid who wants a pony and comes out of the house to find such a pile... Good that your ponds(pond?) is getting some water in them (it) again. Smile [:)]

Fergie, given your other names in that music list, Buble is not at all suprising! Frank's peak popularity was a bit before I remember, but from what I'd heard of Sinatra, and then hearing Buble, Michael does a good job in that style.

Sue, really liked your and Larry's work - looks excellent - like your cows, too! Thumbs Up [tup]

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the Diner, FoulRift/NJ Bob! So, are your locos all black? Wink [;)]

And Sign - Welcome [#welcome] also to Avenger. So, tell us a bit about your layout (or ideas for one, if you're like Rob and in the planning stage) - scale, time period, modeling a favorite RR line or freelancing it like me, etc. Nosy Inquiring minds and all that... Wink [;)]

Bob K., glad you made it back home safely from your trip. Maybe next trip, you could get a temporary NY sticker for the back of your SUV (just big enough to cover the other stickers, for insurance's sake)?

Good to see you again, Chuck & Kathy! Good that you have some more room available for the layout. Yeah!! [yeah]

Linda left earlier today, a bit disappointed that I don't think there's any chance of 'us' ever working long-term. Wish she could feel better about herself and her life as is, but the hard reality is, I can't make it happen for her. Sigh [sigh]

Otherwise, New Year's Eve was pretty good. No blackeyed peas (thanks for the explanation of it, Jeff!), though. Drove out to Daniel (one of the church singles group members)'s farm, where the party was, and they had variety of food, couple of different games (anybody ever play Farkle?), and some good visiting. Then a bit before midnight, we went outside near one of Daniel's sheds (metal one), and he set off a couple of big fireworks (big Roman candle-type, shooting airbursts, etc.). Slept in this morning till about 9 something. Smile [:)]

Getting my (sick and out of commission for a while) laptop ready to send off tomorrow for repair estimate. It'll be good to get it back in full working order when the shop gets it done.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Big Smile [:D]  We started off the New Year with a cold front blowing in this morning.  Temps probably never got above the mid-60's, and should be down in the low 50's tonight.  Could get into the 40's by tomorrow night, but won't get any lower.  Also had a light (and much needed) rain throughout the day.  Time to break out the sweaters as there's no heating system in most houses down here.

At least the coffee (from the mountains of Veracruz, of course) is excellent tonight.  Hot, strong and flavorful.

It's interesting to see how different people or areas have different traditional meals for New Year's.  We had our usual "Zacahuitl", which I refer to as "The tamale that ate Chicago".  It's a mixture of coarse ground corn meal, pork, sauce (tomatos, chilis, spices) and lard.  Gets mixed up, wrapped up in several layers (outside layer is banana leaves), and baked overnight outside in a beehive type oven.  We made two of them, each one weighing in at about 30-33 pounds.  That's a chunk of food.  Dinner [dinner]  But between our extended family, plus my 3 sister-in-laws and their families, plus a few visitors, a good portion of that disappeared.

Cowboy [C):-)]  Rob:  ...sounds like a good Resolution that will be easily achievable...
Yeah, set the bar low I always say.  Wink [;)]  And I'd like to report that I actually got out the trusty Brite-Boy today and cleaned off the mainline well enough to run a few laps with the train that has been sitting idle for the past few months.  Have to break back into the layout gradually.  Next I'll consider actually switching some cars, even though that means I'll have to clean off some sidings.  We'll see how long I can keep up some layout momentum.  I'm actually thinking about resuming scenery work {{{gasp}}}.  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  Don't old your breath.

FoulRift / Bob - Sign - Welcome [#welcome]  Welcome to the diner (aka The Coffee Shop).  Good luck with your New Year's resolution.  It's much more of a commitment than mine.  Your username sounds familiar.  Haven't we met up before on another model railroad forum?  Ever been over on TrainBoard?

Fergie:There's logic in this though I would have opted for Brussel Sprouts...
You know, I used to hate Brussels sprouts too, until I started thinking of them as small cabbages.  Now I really like them.  Of course, they're not available down here.

Avenger - Sign - Welcome [#welcome]  Welcome to the Coffee Shop (Diner), or have you been here before and I just missed it?

That's about it from down here this evening.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

Happy New Year fellow diners!

It seems that brussel sprouts are getting a bad rap here but I'll have a large helping please Chloe along with some roast chicken please. I do like them but I never get them at home as my wife hates them and she's in charge of the kitchen. I've learned never to question that or I might wind up having to eat my own cooking and that is a fate that makes me shudder.

Bob mentioned that Walthers did a CN caboose a while back, last year in fact. I have one and it is quite nice. What I need is a CP caboose but I can wait a couple of months as Truline Trains is coming out with one that will suit my '50s era layout. I have managed to do a little scenery on the layout over the past couple of days. My one hill has spawned 2 others but I have to quit now otherwise there won't be room for the little village. It doesn't have a name yet and Three Hills isn't in the running. Besides there is a town of that name in Alberta and my village is in Ontario. Perhaps something like Upper Chuffton. Has a steam era ring to it don't you think?

I also completed a PK2 stock car kit this evening and I surprised myself by actually getting all 36 grab irons on without a mental break-down. It was so much fun I've ordered a PK2 box car kit.

As is customary I can't post a message without mentioning the weather. It seems most of us are somewhat fixated on the weather and why not I say. I just checked the Environment Canada forecast and can hardly believe what I read. It is supposed to be +1C(+34F) here on Saturday! A heat wave! Summer must be just around the corner! Well in May if we're lucky. Nevertheless it will seem good at this time of year. I have to say that I get somewhat suspicious of the weather man. It often seems that when there is a good forecast for the weekend there is an unfortunate downturn the closer the weekend gets. I think weather forecasters have a slightly sadistic streak.

Well I better sign off now as its back to work tomorrow.

Just wanted to be one of the last to wish all a happy new year! Hope 08 is better than all the rest combined.

Been so busy these past few weeks, w**k is the only place to get a break, and now even that has gotten busy. We have a new chief, I'm working with the old chief on midnights, and it seems everybody wants to wait and talk to him about their problems.

We picked up 3-4 inches of snow overnight, and today Amyjo, me and the nephew from Hawai'i and 3 nieces played football in the churchyard to welcome in the new year. We played for about 40 minutes, and the wind chill was in single digits. We (Da BEARS) won over them (the colts)  7-0. We all went in to G'pa's house and warmed ourselves up by the wood stove for the next hour or so. We have had between 1 and 5 houseguests each night for the past week or two, and in a small trailer, it gets a bit hectic. All of the kids are with another aunt tonight, so Amyjo is having the great pleasure of an empty house all night!

We took one aunt to Ft Wayne International the other AM, I wish all the flights I dealt with-coming or going- went through there. Drive north, turn left and your done. Much less hassle than Indy. Takes 3-6 hours to get someone at Indy back home, depending on time and traffic, we dropped her off and were home in 2 hours flat. Ahhh, the good life. Planned on making a day of it in the big city, checking out Phil's Hobby etc, but it was just before 0600 when we dropped her off, and it's tough to kill 4-5 hours at IHOP! Oh well, there's a train show there on the 16th of Feb, plan on making it anyway, so no big loss.

We take Hawai'i boy to Indy Int Sat AM, I think we are going to head down Fri night and stay with another aunt and uncle who live just a few miles from the airport, so it might not be so bad, and it has to be better than getting up at 0400 to head down there. We do plan to hit the Odyssey Map store and a few other places later that day. Might even find a train store to look at, as after we send him home is when I get to start on the hobby room, and then the layout! WOOOO HOOOO!

Hope y'all had a safe and fun holiday season, and we'll be a talkin' to ya.

Some chamomile tea, please & thank you.

***Sue, if you count working on the table frame, then I started my layout "tonight". No legs or top on it yet, but did glue & screw the frame parts together. Hey, it's a start.Smile [:)]

***Ed, I'm impressed with your new years start. Keep it going!

***FoulRift, that's a cool name & theme. I like the loco, too.

Well, gotta get up early in the AM to make a hay run, so calling it a night here. Take care all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Good Morning All,

34F this morning overcast and flurries predicted through the day. Feels colder though. Back to a routine today and for sure I'm glad it's a short week and not all the staff is back from their trips anyway.

Bob - Yes some of my track ended up superelevated or at least I did the sub roadbed so poorly it tilted - worked for me. No need to worry driving through the New York are with Boston stuff. We're much more tolerant here and probably wouldn't do more than run you onto the shoulder of the road (just kidding). Did you realize that the first few Boston stadiums were built adjacent to the NEW YORK New Haven and Hartford yards?

NJBob - let us know what you find out about the origins of Foul Rift Since you're in central NJ we'll assume none of the smell NJ jokes apply. With several Bobs and Robs here we'll need to come up with a catchy nickname for you so you don't get lost in the shuffle.

The painting went alright last night but I'm going to remove the new paint on the HW diner and start over because I don't like the  shade of gray I ended up with. Sounds like another trip to the LHS is in the works, no? It's tough anyway because I don't think any color pics exist of what I want to do so I've gotta wing it to come up with a "light silver gray". The Athearns came out ok though so I can continue with those. New trucks and couplers should help a bunch as will some interior bits.  Well, time to get crackin here in the shop. Lots to do and the first race weekend is now only 6 weeks off. CUL, (old radio term as in See You Later),     J.R.

Good morning all,

26F Wind 31MPH Feels like 10F.

About 6" of snow fell last night and another 4" is predicted for today.  I have to take William back to Toledo today where he will spend a night with his Grandparents, and then they will run him back home to MI. Only got to visit with my daughter for a little bit this year, she works full time and is going to Collage full time.

CN Charlie, I was looking over a map of Canada last night and there is some interesting names; Yellow Knife, beaver falls, Big Beaverhouse.  Maybe you can mold 3 large boulders on one of your hills and call it Three Rocks, ONT.  Or maybe the Indian word for three hills or something.  Good luck.

Brrrr, Zoe, I need a nice hot cup of coffee, please! It's not Ontario temps here today, but 15 F with 11 mph winds gives us a (brrrrrrrr!!) wind chill of 2 F. Shock [:O] I'll be ready when Saturday gets here with temps (allegedly) supposed to be in the 50's (F) range. Now that will seem like a heat wave, CNCharlie! Wink [;)]

NJ Bob/Foul Rift, I like your SW7 (and the paint job on it). Did you do some more detailing, perhaps? I noticed the air tanks on top, and wasn't sure if you'd added some more details, too. Nice job! Thumbs Up [tup]

Well, I see that my car's windshield is about thawed out, so I'll be heading for w**k. Everyone stay warm, with all of you in the Snow Belt there... See everyone later!

Mornin' all!

Mighty nippy out there this morning! It was a whole 1, count it, 1 degree out there when I first headed out!  My radiator was frozen solid!  I'm still trying to get it unstuck!  I go out, start it up, watch the heat needle climb 3/4 of the way, then shut her down.  Yeah, I'm late to work, I'll have to drain the radiator and refill with new anti-freeze, yeah, it's shaping up to be a real fun day!  And it's not supposed to get a lot warmer til this weekend either.

Today: breezy & cold with a few flurries - high 18
Tonight: partly cloudy & very cold - low 6

Sounds lovely, huh?

Oh well!  Guess I'll make lemonaid as the saying goes!

I hear a few of you got some snow yesterday!  We got some, but then it got too cold to snow.

Well, I'm heading back out to try it again!

Later!

Well I guess it's back to the old grind. Same stuff just a new year.

Got lucky with the weather, South of Boston, only rained and left icy windshields. The temps are to drop in the low 20s, and the first thing I'll need to do @ w**k, is to drop R30 ceiling insulation to stop all the heat loss. The electrician won't be happy having all this in the way but the attic is only a few degrees warmer than outside.

My first day at this job and I get to "roll in the pink stuff", and it's all overhead, Can't wait---That's why I'm still sitting here at 10am.

Have a great day and hope this new year will be good for all.

Hi all -

  HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Sorry for my absence, but the holidays had me like a busy beaver! Between my family and Bretagne's (Brittany's), my holidays were jam-packed. Got some unexpected gifts for Christmas too. Not sure if I posted this or not back in November, but I discovered a Walther's Sale Catalog missing from my coffee table. Well, Some of the things I had marked off in it, I got as presents.

Bretagne's family got me a Kalmbach book - How To Build Realistic Model RR Scenery, 3rd ed., a g/c to my favorite LHS, a g/c to DD (Dunkin' Donuts), and a few 'train' ornaments for the tree.

My family got me some Boley vehicles (fire engines), a g/c to my fav LHS, and a DD g/c, as well as a g/c to HD.

Well, I think it's time for me to go back to bed. I had to leave work early Monday w/ a stomach bug, and I thought I was fine this morning, but it has decided that I have to keep it for a little bit longer, so I am home 'sick' today.

  Take care!

JimRCGMO My layout is going to be a freelance one  of a small town southwest of Chicago by a 100 or so miles. it is going to be in the present day with a NYC historical route ( just to get UP SD70s and SD90/43MAC in there) and UP freight and passenger. It's goimg to be in HO scale. The table/board/whatever is going to be (hopefully) a 5x9 and 5x5 L, and if that fails it will be the minumum 4x8 and 4x4 L. The NYC historical route is going to swith off passenger cars with UP engines to take a "tour" out west. The NYC engines are a F7A and J2 4-6-4 Hudson.

Yeah, i'm one of those folks whose layout got stuck in a time portal.

Back to te Future!!Dead [xx(]

Sorry, i forgot your name, but I'm realy sorry about your wife being layed off right before Christmas. What kind of person (boss) would do that?

Morning all-coffee please. It's cold and windy here.

If it's OK with everyone in the diner how about we use NJ Bob? Seems to be what some of you are using.

Thanks for the compliments on the diesel shell.

Jim-the air tanks and spark arrestors were the only details I added. Thought they would look neat. The colors are Reefer Gray on top,Black the rest of the way down, and  Reefer Yellow for the stripe, nose and cab end.The lettering is Gothic Silver lettering by Microscale applied one letter at a time.

Well, thanks for the coffee. It really hit the spot. Got to run. Thing to do before going to work. NJ Bob

Err, I'm still used to screen names anyway. sOO.

NJ Bob. As to your naming issues, got room/plas for a major railyard? say for  The Devils Humpyard :D (Doesn't have to work though) Nice switcher.

Tomarrow, we swim Tri West. And it soo happens that both managers (namely me) for Cascade have their birthdays tommarrow. Be nice if we had water though...SO wish us luck and I'll be in for my cake (Don;t eat it before I get here PC)

Circus train is coming along. No decals yet, still hesitant. But i have now 4 Accurail flatcars. (out of 16. YAY! 1/4 of the way) One's MIA, one needs a bit of touch up (I learned that Electrical tape is not a substitute for Masking tape when the latter can't be found) and two ready to be loaded. I also have the 89 ft Autoloader ready for her side skirting, and the coach ready to be populated.

Now all I have to do is stop overthinking my layout. I'm trying to build up a whole backstory for a layout that's meant to be fun. The actual room is at Dad's, so I haven't been able to work on it yet this year. we did work out a kink in the design. I had a spot where the second level had to tunnel under the 3rd and over the 1st and then had a 3 percent grade. Now, Tehachapi is back in Indiana

Afternoon folks!

Happy New Year to you all! Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to 2008!

Got my Feb 08 MR magazine in the mail on Monday and spent most of the day yesterday reading that in between, we watched a lot of Twilight Zone on the Sci-Fi channel and ate some Ham, Black-eyed Peas with rice, Cornbread Muffins and Cabbage for the requisite New Year dinner. Now this is supposed to correlate to health, happiness and money, so I'll be eating some more leftovers tonight.

Did any of you get your Feb 08 MR issue yet? They have a new Model Railroader's Build a scene modeling contest which looks interesting, I tried to find the rules online but only see a reference to the generic standards for submitting writing and photos to Kalmbach.

I just sent in a subscription card for Trains magazine in the mail this week, any of you guys read that one? I picked up a couple issues at Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago and like it, so I decided to get the sub for it too!

As Garry said, if anyone wants some more Prime Rib (PR), here it is again....

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Welcome to the diner FoulRift and Avenger! Have some PR on me today!

Bob K.  - I heard that there was an article in the March 1970 MR that has a great article on making a working set...no kidding...instead of oil, he uses contact cleaner to keep the wheels on his cars clean. Apparently works real well.

Happy B-Day [bday] Happy Birthday Mitch! And thanks for the Led Zep info!

Ed - Sorry to hear about the cold front in the 40's! How you keeping warm with those temps? I bet a hot pot of soup on the stove would help!

Good luck with the radiator PC! Were you able to get that running?

Hey JPowell, long time no see! Hope you are feeling better real soon! Sounds like you have a nice Christmas!

Hey Duke, Sue, Jim, Rob....save me a seat in the back booth....

Cheers,

Ryan

And let me jump in on that too!

And be careful about hitting the top of the page.  You do, and you buy with your imaginary virtual dollars for everyone on the page!  I just leave my credit card with Zoe and Chloe, our virtual waitresses.  It's probably safer with them anyways!  Oh, and I'll pick up this page Foulrift.  You're a newbi around here, so you didn't know.

Yeah, I made it to work.  I got it thawed out enough to drain some of the fluid, then I dumped in some straight anti-freeze.  I got it to a shop near my work because I didn't feel like playing in the water when it's only 10 degrees out (I know, I'm a candypants!) and I walked the rest of the way to work (couple blocks).  Now the auto fixit man can play with it.  It'll cost me a lot more this way, but I don't have the time or the incilination to mess with it right now, and it's supposed get down to 6 tonight so if I don't get it done I'll be going through all of this again tomorrow morning (NO THANKS!).  Mechanic said he'd have it done in a few hours.
