My train room is 25' x 32' (ish) the whole basement. The front room in the basement is 15' x 32' and that is where I'm working now. I do have a section of wall along the stairs that is just over 8' and I'm thinking about a port authority dock.

Evening folks-haven't been here in a few days, but just stopping in for a few moments.
Rob, I -like- that idea above! If you could just find an HO scale wig for the driver & the correct decals for the law enforcement agency that pulled her over, it would be perfect! Either way, it's still cool!
I forgot to notice if Ryan was in the diner today or not, but he mentioned how to make links active. I wondered why I'd never noticed the "chains" before, & its because for some reason they seem to be not available to me. They show, but not highlighted, or available to use. Dunno if it's my browser (use Firefox & also tried on IE, same thing) who knows. In the meantime until I figure things out, bear with me if I have a link to share by copying & pasting.
I got all my running around done today, & that includes my Christmas shopping. Not many to shop for-just my parents' & Dawn. So hopefully that means I can just hang around the house until I have to go back to Ww...ww.... ("work?" "yep.") on Wednesday. Of course train weathering, painting, & decaling will be done quite a bit. My 86' CSX ex L&N boxcar is coming along well, just awaiting some additional data decals from Microscale before the weathering starts. The other projects are coming along fine, & looking forward to starting another one, a D&TSL 2-bay ACF. I have the old HK decals, now just awaiting the hopper I snagged off Ebay & then I can start on it too.
Dawn's been on a scarf/muffler knitting kick, & I have a feeling I "may" get one for Christmas. NP, they're definitely "warm!" She worked overtime on one the other night for her beadworking friend in Washington, & sent it out yesterday Priority Mail, "hoping" that she may get it in time for Christmas.
Oh well, I better git-Logan's waiting for his W-A-L-K. Dawn & I's best thoughts for everyone here, & in case I don't get back here before, Merry Christmas! (although I'll more than likely stop in before then!)

I'd say it was another beautiful day in Paradise, but it was a bit warm for that. Probably got up around 90º, which is just a bit warm for Christmas. Even had to break down and run the a/c this evening. It does feel good.
We went out to the orange grove yesterday and harvested more fruit. The Mandarins are at their peak. Those that aren't picked will start to dry out around the middle of January. The Reina's are already sweet, although they will continue to improve for another month or so.
Paul - congratulations on the grandchild. Sorry to hear about Diane's problems with the birth. Hope things work out well after the hospital stay.
Wolfgang - good to see you here on the Coffee Shop (or Diner) thread (this is Ed M from TB). Nice frost photos.

First off I need a large coffee please and a toasted cinammon bun would go nicely with it or perhaps a mincemeat tart since it is the Christmas season.
More snow here tonight but at least it isn't too cold, only -8C at present. There is a storm going through just south of us so northern Minnesota will likely get hit the worst.
I read the posts on the grain cars and yes I do remember them. In 1961 my family moved to Rainy River, Ontario which is a CN division point on the line between Winnipeg and Thunder Bay. Most of the traffic on that line is grain going to the port in Thunder Bay. The cars used to transport it were all 40' box. I remember a few were still wood. Johnboy is right about the use of planks to fill in the door space. I remember the wood as a pale colour, likely fir in those days. Hope that helps Jim. By the way when steam was still used on that line( until 1959) they used some 2-10-2's. One is on display still in Rainy River.
Very hectic around here with Christmas preparations as we are hosting the family dinner this year. I expect to be given my marching orders early tomorrow as the list of items to buy for the dinner seems to be a very long one.

I just finished up my first week at my new job. 3rd shift tech support for one of the world's largest investment banks. I haven't taken any calls yet but I've been listening in on some, and so far it all seems to be pretty straightforward. In fact, I'm usually bored out of my mind because I don't think they expected me to finish my online training so early (spare me! ) AND ace the tests they have at the end on the first try. Since it's a 24/7 operation, I will have to work Christmas, but I don't mind, seeing as I need the money. My very Catholic grandparents are sure to give me an earful about it, though. I still work my retail job on Sunday; we are going to get slammed with last minute shoppers!
So far I've sunk over $830 into my damaged Saab (which only cost me about $1500 in the first place). $630 for the radiator, $100 for a new headlight, and another $100 for a new tire. Now I face anywhere from $5-300 because my front wipers died and I've yet to locate the problem (blown fuse? broken wire? dead motor?). All of the shops in my area are closed till Thursday, too, though lI've been told we should only see percipitation on Sunday and I have a ride for that day. The transmission shifts clunkily, the clutch needs to be pressed to the floor to shift, and the steering is out of whack enough that I have trouble feeling whether or not the car is gripping on wet or snowy roads, making for white-knuckle driving from point A to point B. I want the Saab to keep going till President's Day so I can get a good price and financing package on a decent preowned car, but to be honest I think that's a little too optimistic.
To end on a good note, my manager passed out $1 scratch tickets to me and my coworkers at my tech support job yesterday. I won $10- the first time I've ever won any money from a lottery ticket! I'm hoping that'll be a harbinger of good things to come.

I have an "around the room" layout, and yes I have passenger trains. The big one is the B&O capitol limited with the heavy weight Pullmans. Hence the large curves on my mainline.
The pictures of the cement plants didn't turn out. I'll try again right after Christmas.
I had planned for a small port on the layout, but with the addition of a 620' freighter I'll need to expand it to two 3' sections. The Toledo train show hosted a club layout with 2 different coal docks and their freighter was on a small table with wheels to push the freighter between "ports". I think I'll just have enough dock space for one freighter at a time with the other on the wall nearby, lol.

She set sail on her maiden voyage on 8 September 2006 at 02:00 hours from Aarhus, calling at Gothenburg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam, Algeciras, the Suez Canal, and arrived in Singapore on 1 October 2006 at 20:05 hours.
Emma Mærsk departed Singapore the next day, headed for Yantian in Shenzhen. Wait until you see the 2 new ships they are building. Each will carry over 20,000 containers (TEU). There are only 2 US ports that will handle these monsters. One will run from China to the US and the other will run from Europe to the US. They are so large they build a section in dry dock, then float it out to the pier then build the next section. They plan on using tugs to hold the sections together while they are welded.

Been watching Christmas movies on the tube and making Christmas candy too! We made a batch of chocolate fudge, chocolate peanut butter fudge, and pecan pralines. Getting ready to make my famous appetizer Cajun En Crute, which is Cajun smoked sausage wrapped with puff pastry dough and baked in the oven. We are going to bring the appetizer to the Louisburg Moose Lodge Christmas party tonight.
I was out of the office yesterday and running around taking care of my Elf duties and now all the presents are done! But, I'll be back in the office on Wednesday, boo hoo!

If you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del you get no out of the ordinary programs running. If you try to run an autoboot disc like my backup dic or the windows XP disc it starts spinning, then stops. There's no way to start it manually.
It's an old computer, but it's the best hunk-o-junk I got!
Philip - Well, from what you describe it sounds like a good ole rebuild of the operating system might be in store. But from your reply to Jeff if you tried to boot to the Windows CD and it did not take are you sure that the Windows CD is a fully bootable operating system CD? Sometimes operating system CD's that come with a PC are not fully bootable, but are only for reference. Do you have a diagnostic CD disk? These come with some brands of PC's and are bootable, they can be run to test all the hardware (HW) components and then give a report or reports on what is broken from a HW standpoint. What is the make and model?

Yeah, the Windows CD is good. I bought it a few years ago when I upgraded that computer from Windows 2000 Professional. I don't have a diasgostic CD. It's an old HP Vectra with a whole 13 gig on the hard drive. I've found a place that will do a fix for about $45, but it may just be time to retire her. Thanks for the ideas though!
13 Gb hard drive???? and you upgraded from Win2000 to XP? I bet your having problems with page file. The OS is consuming 13% of your HD room, not to mention internet, email, word processor and drivers.
Time to pitch the 13 Gb HD, splurge a little and get a nice fat 250Gb hd for $75.

While $45.00 is not a bad rate at all, they may just offer that as a diagnosis fee and then charge that just to tell you what needs to be done to fx it. With older PC's you reach a point where you have to decide if you want to dump more $$$ into them to keep them running another year or two, or just bite the bullet and spring a couple more hundred and get a new one.

Hi everyone: Just a drop-in to fix a couple of things, and arrange for the Mess bill, by the look of it. If I'm quick, I may get some more mrr this evening! I've cut the ditches I need for the upper level yards (That's mostly the ones along the main line since the yard won't have much in the way of modeled drainage) this afternoon.
Ryan you were talking about rates for IT service. How's this for service in a different field. The local small engine repair chap said he would have a look at our sick snow blower. Came this morning with a truck and two helpers. Got it aboard, and then phoned in a couple of hours to say it was fixed and running, would we be in if he dropped it back this afternoon, or tomorrow? I asked him what he charge would be. Answer, $20.00!!!! Sure enough, before 3:00 he was back, unloaded and demonstrating his handiwork. Apparently it wasn't varnished up jets in the carb (my guess) but corroded linkages all over the place. Levers worked but nothing moved inside. So that's same day service, pick up and delivery; and a whole bunch of starting tips not in the manual to boot! All for $20.00. Naturally we saw to it that he got a bit better than that.

Lastly; here's, I'm reminded by Garry, what I should have included in my reply to Corey. I have 3 passenger consists. A Via, seen here getting onto the layout by the removable fiddle yard
and a 3 car "local" that usually runs from the station at end of the farthest yard track in this shot. (so it's a Bachman built-up freight shed, but this isn't a perfect world!) The Bud cars run as a commuter service from the track they are on here.

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise, if you're looking for improving your suntan at the beach that is. In the low 90's and lots of sun. Supposedly there's a front coming through tomorrow morning, and the temperature could get all the way down into the 50's. One can only hope. I'm not holding my breath. If I check 5 different weather services I get 5 different versions. How did that old refrain go.... "All I want for Christmas is to turn off the a/c, turn off the a/c, turn off the a/c..." or something like that.
Did make some progress on the pergola that I'm building on the terrace. Outside chance this project could actually be completed (+/-) before Christmas. If I don't die of heatstroke working on it first, that is. That would be nice.
Not sure if we'll head back out to the orange grove tomorrow or Monday. Need to lay in a good supply for the holidays. We don't have any eggnog to mix with the rum, so fresh squeezed orange juice will have to do.
Jerry - sadly, no, no progress on the layout. I'm currently using the pergola project as my main excuse. Either that or I'm saving up all my modeling energy for the big post-New Year's push.
Ryan - the lowest I've seen it here is probably around the mid 40's. Maybe as low as 40 but I really doubt it. I can guarantee that it never freezes. Of course, the mid-40's can seem real cold when you live in a solid masonry house with no heat. Once that mass cools down it's sweater time. Usually happens two or three times per year in January or February.

I took one of the Hiawatha cars out of the box and it is really beautiful. Now the grab irons are another thing. They are really scale and I can hardly see them. Of course I have to install them. Yea, right, with my eyes. Ha,Ha,Ha.
I called AARP today and found out that Mary Ann is not garenteed aceptance for the suplimental insurance. We should have gotten that when she turned 65. Now someone tells us. Anyway she is on the part D and I'm on the supplemental and part D with another company.
Lee that's a real good looking crain there. I've thought about putting my ships on a trolly to move in and out of the dock. The ones that won't be on stage would be stored in shelves. I even thought about powering the trolly and navigating it around.

The $45 is for any work they can do to fix it outside of parts. If it takes them a day of hacking to get it going, it's $45. If they look at it for 10 seconds and it's terminal, it's $45. My parents have taken their computer to them twice and they fixed theirs for the $45 both times, so they appear to be honest.
I don't really use the computer for anything except web surfing. My Email is online and my picture storage is on an 100 gig external hard drive.
Still, I'm going to at least look into replacment costs.
